WARNING: Do NOT Take Psych 101 with this prof! She grades hard, you will get opinionated answers wrong. All Essay exams, NO curve, the average in this intro, 100-level class on tests/quizzes is usually in the D range...just take someone else
Pretty unclear teacher over all... I would recommend taking someone else if you have the option.
This was one of my hardest classes that I had that semester!! She was NOT clear on her lectures and she jumped around. I would suggest that you take someone else for psychology.. It was the WORST experience as a freshman
Very unclear. does absolutely nothing. I feel like the TA for this class does everything for her. Do not take this class with her.
Confusing due dates on assignments;Conflicting information/directives;Unrealistic expectations for time in course;?Used us? to further own research;couldn't choose own research topic
Wasn?t committed to her students? needs--teaching was not a priority -Poor e-mail response -?Quizzes? really exams; not straightforward
-Class and notes extremely unstructured -Lectures do not help us with what we needed at respective points in our group and individual projects -Not enough structure on individual projects?would only look at our proposal/outline once before turning it in?including approval of topic and whether or not it sufficed as an experiment
She is very scatter brained. Her class is unorganized and has no structure. She constantly changes due dates and her assignments are confusing and unclear. She treats the class as if its your major. Her exams are so bizaare and strictly over her lectures not the book. Her lectures are confusing and pointless. I wouldnt recommend her to anyone.
teacher was all over the place in lecture. exams are over her lecture, but the notes she provides don't help either. disorganized, and basically unhelpful when it comes to anything. wouldn't recommend a class with her to anyone.
Worst teacher I have had at this school. She is disorganized, has a terrible teaching style, and does not communicate with her TAs. I loved the concept of the class, but I will never take another class from her, and would not recommend her to anyone.
She shows up late every day and leaves the class often thought the class period. Her tests are not over the horrible notes she provides. Tests in this class are dumb. she grades them like wise. Avoid this class at all costs. She teaches like its your major and if it is your major you will change after this class. Its that bad...
This professor is extremely scatter-brained. The tests are from the lectures, but the lectures make little to no sense. No book use.
The class was horrible. She was disorganized, scatter brained, and hard to understand. Her exams were not relevant to what we learned in class and her lecture contradicted the text book. I would not take this class you are better of taking it in a lecture hall.
As I sit here and take my final I realize I have not learned anything that is on this Essay test. She is very unclear and does not take very many grades. She is willing to help you but she is not a good teacher and she is extremely unorganized.
I had Sherona for both pych and WS-I loved both of these courses, recieved an A in both, &am glad Sherona was my prof. However, it took me a good while to get the hang of her "teaching style". Most of the time, she truely doesnt appear to make sense but if you can sit back &listen, &grasp her overall message, thats really all you need to succeed.
She was my favorite teacher of my undergrad career. She was extremely helpful and taught us things that we could apply to real life situations. She cares about the students and how they do in the class. She was also willing to talk about things outside of the classroom. I can't understand anyone who has a problem with her as a teacher or otherwise
I was afraid about her as a teacher after reading all these comments, but she is probably my favorite teacher for the first semester! Her class is incredibly easy as long as you aren't lazy. She grades based off of small assignments worth a few points that add up in the end. So if you fail one, it wont affect your grade. She is a great teacher!
She goes off on tangents, but she isn't really what people here are saying. Her class isn't difficult for people going into Psychology, and her friendly attitude makes it easy to go to class.
Great, intelligent speaker, the university is definitely gets it's money worth
She's an easy professor, although she goes on a lot of tangents. She puts the information in really simple terms and the quizzes/tests are easy as long as you do the readings.
This was hands down the hardest class and the worst experience ever. She goes off topic on the lectures and her tests are extremely difficult for an intro to psychology course. Also, she relied on her TA's too much. I would never recommend this professor and I would advise to take another professor instead.
I love Sherona! She was an excellent profressor and easy to talk to. She is hilarious. When you take her Psyc 2900 class request that she does recorded lectures online, helped me out alot!
by far my favorite professor at BG. She is so helpful, very easy to talk to. If you don't understand something she is willing help. She did some recordings to help understand her lectures and it helped a lot. Make sure to study and you will do fine.
Very good professor and very easy class. If you can read a book, which is expected at a college level, you can pass the class. All of her test questions are based on the readings. Once again very easy class, but don't take it if you are lazy and don't want to read the book.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED TO
Sherona is one of my favorite professors that I have experienced at BGSU! She really, really cares about your grade and wants you to excell in everything that you do. She does a lot of "real life" applications when she teaches you something new. That is very helpful and is shown through her exams. Pay attention and go to class. You'll pass easily!
Had Sherona for 2900 and 3280 and she is by far the best psyc prof i have ever had. she always lets you know what is on the test and never tries to trick you. when writing papers, she tends to give feedback and allow redos. she cares mostly about students doing well and understanding the material. i would take any course with her teaching it.
Her teaching style is terrible. You will learn nothing in the class, but you have to go because she has a "class prep assignment" for nearly every class period. These prep assignments are pointless and teach you nothing. Tests are easy, but you have to read the textbook. Essentially, you have to teach everything to yourself. Avoid this class.
would not recommend. She gives notes during lecture that are not relevant to the exams at all. You literally have to teach yourself in this class, which is hard to do when you don't know the material. One plus is that she assigns class prep assignments, which are easy points. Though, those barely matter if you do bad on the exams.
I believe that Sherona has deep knowledge about research in psychology. She was a bit scatterbrained at times and my study habits consisted of reading the books and avoiding lecture notes. She is extremely willing to teach outside of class if you are having difficulty. Her exams are extremely tricky and difficult so be prepared.
Sherona has a hard time articulating the material during lectures which makes it confusing but she gives many examples that are helpful. If you don't mind reading the textbook, this class is extremely easy but if you just use the lectures and notes, you will be lost and lacking a majority of the material that appears on the tests.
Had Sherona for PSYCH 1010 by far the most confusing professor. I am sure she genuinely knows and understands the material, however she is not a very good lecturer. She reads directly off of the slides and does not explain them effectively. Reading the book is the only way you will learn. I would not take her unless she is your last option!
Dr. SGR is very personable and caring. She really does want her students to succeed. However, as a professor, she can often be very unclear and scattered throughout her lectures. Make sure you take detailed notes (which can be difficult since she goes so fast), but she does put everything online which helps. If you put in the work you'll get an A.
Dr. Garrett-Ruffin is a nice lady, and she seems like she cares about her students. There is quite a bit of homework every week, but it isn't as bad once you get into a groove with it and understand exactly what is expected of you. She is a good communicator, and she is a fair, yet tough grader.
I took her for an online psych class and regretted it the entire semester. The course load is very heavy and she was a tough grader on everything throughout the semester. I emailed her for help multiple times and she blew me off and was not even a little bit helpful. If you can avoid taking her I highly recommend you do.
Had her for psychophysiology; it was the worst class/professor I've ever taken. Doesn't explain things very well, offers no help when you ask questions (usually responds with, "well, we discussed this in class"). She often makes mistakes, which gets confusing combined with the ALREADY difficult course material. 0/10, DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
Sherona is an amazing professor. I took her for for both PSYC2900 and Abnormal Psychology. I received an A in her class this past semester, and would definitely be more than willing to take her again. She's VERY fun, caring, and respectful to her students. Go to class, and you'll pass. (I will mention the lab for this class is tedious).
Before taking this class I thought it was going to be the hardest class of my whole undergrad. Boy was I wrong, Sherona clearly describes the course material (a little to much some times). She was very repetitive and had a lot of grammar issues throughout the semester. Overall though a decent psych professor
Not the best but certainly not the worst. Shes either extremely clear or extremely vague. My best advice is to take as many notes as you can. Her tests are very fair, and if a question seems unclear or confusing you can write a rebuttal.
Sherona is huge on attendance and its also very fast paced. Get ready for silly 2 point assignments.
I can see how some people would like Sherona, she can be funny. What I disliked about the class was that she was repetitive in her examples. I love psychology and I like research, but I think she could have been better at teaching it. She was very bad at answering questions, she would redirect the question to her research and wouldn't expand further
Sherona is only lecture and it gets extremely boring. She acts like she cares about you but she does not at all. Even the TAs hated her. The exams are super hard especially for an intro psych class. If given the opportunity take the HDFS 1930 class instead of PSYCH 1010 it will be way easier.
I took psych 1010 as the honors class, and let me tell you i did not enjoy it at all. First of the power points for the lecture didn't actually have any notes on them so you had to listen to her to learn, and her lectures didn't help cause she talked really fast. When you tried to ask her a question she was no help either. Her tests are really hard
There's sooo many group projects that became really inconvenient. She was a little scatter-brained and unfocused. The slides she did have were posted online but most of the information she says outloud and she moves quickly. The tests are more difficult than not, but with lots of studying, you are very capable of recieiving an A
I truly liked Dr. Sherona. The one things that really made me enjoy/do well in class was the fact that she was always checking in on us and making sure that every person in the class knew what was going on, which I think is very important. She is extremely knowledgable in her profession and she also adds humor to her class, which I also liked.
Worst professor ever. Her class is extremely lecture heavy. 90% of her exams are lecture based. So if you do not attend her classes you will not pass the class. Her TAs suck and recitation makes no sense because we just learn new things in the class not go over things like most recitations do. There is a lot of MyPSYClab homework each week.
Worst lectures I've ever been to. If you skip more than two classes, she takes deducts a letter grade no matter the circumstance. There's tons of homework with the recitation. Recitations are probably one of the stupidest things about the class. The TAs aren't really helpful and they pretty much go over the same things that are gone over in class.
She talks in circles a lot so be prepared to teach yourself. Get the textbook, itll save your grade. requires you to purchase top hat and gives extra credit through there. Allowed notes on exams including final. As long as you get the textbook, should do fine.
Psychophys was honestly not that bad of a class. Sherona just didnt explain things thoroughly and it made the class confusing. Seemed like she just winged every class.
She was a really chill person, and helpful with any issues you had.
Tests are hard, and the website she makes us use makes everything really confusing. She talks in circles and I never feel like I've learned much after class is over.
Her tests are open note and she provides a study guide for them. I don't pay attention in class that much and still have an A in the class. You also use Top Hat.
BEST PROFESSER EVER!! All exams were open note and easy to get over 100% on. If you get good grades on the first three exams you dont have to take a final. Sherona was super nice and caring and also funny! Her lectures were easy to get through and to understand. Would take again if I could. Dont listen to the bad reviews smh
Because of these reviews, I went into this class expecting the worse, but what I got was a wonderful surprise. Sherona is a very caring and dedicated professor. If you want to pass, take notes IN CLASS and ask questions. For the exams, I would compare the study guide with my notes, and if I was missing any info, I looked it up in the book.
It's a big class so it's mostly all lecture based. TopHat was used everyday which made the class less enjoyable. Sherona overall is super nice and cares, and it's an easy A if you put minimal work towards the class.
I would have given Professor G-R a higher rating if her grading methods weren't absolutely crazy. I took a 45 question timed quiz and it was worth two points (I got all of the answers correct). All of her assignments include 0.02 or 0.05 points, which is frustrating, but she gave great feedback.
Professor Sherona was a decent professor but nothing extraordinary. Her lectures are dense and the exams are kind of difficult. She allows notecards because I think she knows a lot of people would fail without it. She uses TopHat so attendance is mandatory along with participation. Get ready to read and still be a bit confused. Overall she is okay.
Doesn't do a good job of teaching to different kinds of learners. Confusing to listen to - unsure of what she was talking about most of the time. Goes off on tangents about her own research that doesn't really apply to the course material.
Her lectures are the most boring thing on the face of the planet. She cant explain anything
She doesn't like to give more time or makeup exams, even if it was a tech problem or her problem. Ask something about the class through email and sometimes you will feel like she finds you annoying. 50 questions (sometimes even more 57) for 50 minutes. and it's close even before that so you might just have 48-49 minutes. Include long cases questio
A very sweet woman who genuinely cares for her students well being, academically and personally. Excellent at giving lectures that keep attention.
Dr. Garrett-Ruffin was an average professor. What her personality lacked, the textbook and exams made up for. The text was very interesting, but be ready to spend more than a few hours a week reading and answering quiz questions. Be sure you can answer exam questions fast because there are a lot of questions to answer in a short amount of time.
Dr. Sherona was excellent. She is the sweetest and always made me smile. I had to take this class online because of COVID, but she still did a good job of teaching the class. Her tests were challenging, but she lets you use a study guide. There was barely any homework. It was an interesting class.
Professor SGR was so fun to have in class! She truly cares that we are learning and retaining the material and you can tell she put a lot of work into what she's doing. If you need to take this class, please take hers! She's amazing!
In this class, Dr. SGR was tough, but made the content enjoyable. This class is originally a tough course on it's own, so she did a good job on making sure we were applying what we are learning and making sure we understood. She did a good job under the circumstances!
I took this class remotely so I still had lectures but I really understood the content and was able to talk with my TA a lot if I had questions. Overall a good experience and she lets you opt out of the final exam if you took all of the others.
Dr. Garrett-Ruffin is a solid choice for PSYC1010. She is lively, energetic, and always smiling. Her tests can sometimes be difficult, but there are lots of extra credit opportunities. This course was not too strenuous, especially for someone who is not involved in the field of psychology. If you do the homework and study a little, you will be fine
I loved taking Dr. Garrett-Ruffin's classes. Her lectures are a little scattered. Her use of technology is not great sometimes, but she is never afraid to own up to her mistakes if students point them out. She will ALWAYS give students the benefit of the doubt. Her knowledge of psychology and counseling is vast and very interesting. 9/10 reccommend
Easiest psychology class I've ever taken. Super interesting material and she knows it well. Her lectures can be scattered sometimes, but nothing too off-putting. Lots of opportunities for extra credit and make-up. She's understanding and caring and will always own up to her mistakes. She gives students the benefit of the doubt. Easy A. 10/10.
Loved Dr. Sherona's class. She's such an energetic & lively professor who definitely wants to see students succeed. The homework and assignments are not too difficult to complete and exams do take some studying, but still pretty easy to attend a good grade. Also, If you complete 3 exams, you don't have to do the final exam. Overall, love the class!
It is important to show up for lectures so you can ask questions. Sherona is one of the most dedicated professors I've come across and is there for her students. Would absolutely take one of her courses again
Dr. SGR is an awesome professor. She offers plenty of extra credit opportunities and makes the expectations for assignments and exams clear. Exams will be difficult if you don't study, but if you take all three midterms (non-cumulative) you don't have to take the final (cumulative)! She always posts study guides and regularly sends class updates.
Sherona is such a sweetheart, she cares about her students and it shows. I highly recommend her, she always offers assistance and is very intelligent. She is reasonable and it shows throughout the course.
If it is an online course DO NOT TAKE IT WITH THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!!!
I'd rather sit and watch a race between paint drying and grass growing than her lecture, she literally put me to sleep almost every class. Unreasonable and stubborn. I can't tell if she's stuck in her ways or is trying to force something new that does not work. Simply the single worst teacher I have had in 4 semesters at BG. Good heart, bad teacher
I love Dr.SGR, very kind and thoughtful Professor. Honestly, one of the best professors that I've had in my college experience. I was honestly shocked at her overall average ratings as she is a very caring and compassionate professor that gives students multiple opportunities to improve their grades. Definitely would take any class with her!
Good professor. The material was very demanding .
Exams are difficult but they get curved and you can drop lowest score at the end of the semester. SO MUCH reading, don't take this class with another reading-heavy class. Lectures are helpful, and often times exams are based on lectures, so go to class. Attendance isn't checked, but recommended.
Very poor lectures followed by very very hard tests.
Maybe the worst I've had. Very disrespectful and even misgendered me. Also the tests covered things I know we didn't go over and she wasn't in her office when I went to ask for help
If you want to be in a constant state of crippling anxiety, then by all means, take a class with Professor Garrett-Ruffin. She does an awful job at explaining and relaying course information, will not answer your emails, and quizzes you over information never even discussed in class. Often times any info given is wrong leading to more confusion.
Took this class as a fourth years Psychology student and she was the worst. Many emails went unanswered. Everyone in the class struggled. Quizzes are unclear in directions and in what the questions are asking. Way too much content for a single semester.
Dr. Garrett is a caring woman but is someone that lectures too much and gives little outside assignments outside of class. She's also a professor that updates her due dates on assignments two weeks in advance but it's preferable to have them in advance for the entire semester.
Dr. Garrett-Ruffin offers multiple retakes on weekly quizzes and online assignments. However, they aren't worth very many points, and a majority of your grade comes from three major exams and then the final. I wish that these exams were spread out into smaller tests.
Homeworks were 10-20 but only worth 1-2 points. Tests were difficult and lecture was not organized well which made the topics confusing and unclear. Would not choose her as a professor if you have other options.
Do not take this class. She takes anywhere between 5-30 minutes AFTER class starts to show up. She does not have a clear grading system, and every group had a WIDE range of grades, even though we all answer the same way. She's very hard to follow and treats the class as though we are all experts, and doesn't really answer questions at all
Genuinely the worst professor I've ever had. Strict on grading with no clear explanation on what she wants. She is constantly late. Might be the worst explainer of homework, what's on quizzes, and other assignments. Will directly ask you to put something in an assignment and then give you negative points for it. Don't take her class ever.
She cancels class either an hour or two before class will start, and sometimes she won't even let you know class is cancelled.
I have never had a professor that caused me more stress & anxiety. Each wk I felt like my grade could easily tank. She was always 15 minutes late to class & inaccessible outside of class. We had to fight for basic things students want; access to your tests after you take them & consistent grading. She had no good reason for not providing these.
Worst professor i've ever had. she is not understanding when you have other things outside of class going on, she is very her way or no way. she never lets you get a word in edge wise and acts like she knows it all. would not take again.
She is a very nice person, but during class, you can't understand what she is talking about. The course material is very in-depth; you are given top hat assignments that have 50+ questions to complete on your own. It is pretty much busy work, and I got nothing out of it. In lecture it is helpful what she talks about, but she goes through it fast.
Psych has always been interesting to me but this course has ruined it for me. No matter the amount of studying you do and attention you pay to the lectures, the exams (heavily weighted) are not relevant to the information. Way harder than it should be for a BGP. If you need to or want to take this course, please do so with another professor.
Professor Garrett-Ruffin was great in my opinion. I will say the Tophat course work is a lot and this a class that requires you to pay attention and take notes. She as well as her TA's were very good at responding to emails as well as quick to put in grades. There is also plenty of opportunity for extra credit and she has very forgiving policies.
SGR is ok. The grade policy is friendly, as your lowest exam score gets dropped at the end of the semester, but there's a decent amount of weekly homework, and the lectures are hard to follow sometimes. However, there are a lot of extra credit points you can obtain throughout the semester, such as answering questions on TopHat in class, etc.
do not take her just dont. she thinks you should have a heart and soul passion for her intro level required course and nothing else in your life. also hardly showed up and mostly had other speakers. heavily relied on ta's
