A very inspiring Teacher. Her passion for history is contagious.
sure, go ahead and blame everything on the "white man" you bra burning hippie
If you take notes during her lectures, or at least pay attention you should be fine. She gives two essays for the semester, and if you do a good job, you should be fine. She even looks over your essays if you ask!+study guides for midterm/final!
women's emph. Read, take lots of notes, do the work. Not a hard class to pass if you do those things. Patton is a very passionate professor. She won't put up with student's crap, doesn't make her a bra-burning anything. Tests are mostly ID's & she emphasizes you adding what you think. highly Recomm.
Passionate about her subject. Loved her class, very interesting, lots of notes.
She is such a great teacher. Very caring and great at what she teaches. Take her class and you'll start thinking about things that you never paid attention about. She has lots of notes, but she's not boring at all. She'll remember your name.
History is my least favorite subject but she has a way of making this class so interesting. Her passion for history is contagious! i learned more in her class than i did in all my years of high school history. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
Great professor for both classes.. Fair, makes history fun.. Sometimes lets her feminist side come out, but otherwise good.. The only way to fail this class is if you don't take notes during the lecture.. A feminist at heart, be careful.. VERY LIBERAL.. Have fun...
SHE SUCKS!
Its a womens emphesis class but it's not as bad as you would think. Her tests are that bad. 1 research report of your choice but it has to tie into women
Sherri has been one of the best teachers I've managed to have at SCC, and she's made me absolutely solid on going into a history major, just from watching her teach her classes - will definately be in 310 next year.
She is very patient and she knows how to capture your attention. she keeps the class very interesting. She can make you laugh too, not a dry sense of humor at all. Very down to earth and very understanding. Best history teacher I have ever had.
To all history majors and students interested in history: take her African history class (hist 360)! it will open your eyes on a continent that is completly misunderstood. she is passionate, helpful, wants students to participate... a wonderful history teacher.
she's a wonderful teacher, I can honestly say that she is one of the most inspiring and best teacher i've ever had. If you don't like history she'll make you learn how to love and appreciate it that's a promise!
Very interesting and I don't even like history. History has always been one of my worst classes but this time around it wasn't even though we couldn't use notes for the exam. Just show up for class and take notes. You'll do fine.
She's a good history teacher..even though history is suppose to be boring..she brings the fun out of it..she makes things really clear..if you don't know whats going out ..ask her questions and she'll go straight to the point. ^_^
I loved her so much I took both classes! Great professor - she's tough, makes you work hard but you learn so much! Patton is fair but a tough grader so no slackers. Her lectures are awesome, packed full of info and tasty tidbits of history like funny quotes. She makes the time go by quickly. LOTS of reading - you'll get busted so do your reading!
Links past to the present - Stimulated my interest in subject. Womens emphasis class = regular history, but also look @ gender ideals. One commenter wrote "very liberal," could be true, but unjustified observation. Never spoke about politics. Conservative students would have nothing to be offended about. Smart humor. Asset to SCC. Highly recommend.

Great Teacher... Very willing to help you with anything... and willing to explain something to you if you dont understand... great teaching and study methods
i like the class. it gives a good understanding of women back in the day. i like her teaching.
Sherri is a FANTASTIC prof! She's tough, don't get me wrong, but you will learn incredible amounts from her. Keep up on the reading, and take lots of notes. You will have to work for your grade, it won't be handed to you. However, she is fair, flexible, and approachable.

Prof. Patton is great. She is funny, smart, and gives great lectures. The class is tough but if you take good notes and study, an A is possible. She speaks fast, so be prepared to write fast and have your hand hurt when class is over!
AWESOME!
A great, no-nonsense professor! Fun and witty. Tests can seem tough, but if you study, you actually LEARN something!
Very good teacher, on par with the other history teachers I've had so far at SCC. She expects the full package from each student: Class participation, strong writing skills, and you had better be on the ball when assignments are due. But her lectures are informative, humorous, and she tries to make early American history paletable.
Gives TOO much homework.. reading is her homework.. 60-80 pages a night...WAY TOO high expectations on the quizzes...gives 30 mins to do two 2-page essays..doesnt give you enough time to think...juss write..lectures are okay..take GOOD notes.. and FOCUS on the ID'S that she has written on the board..you have to REALLY work hard to get a decent grad
awsome teacher. she doesn't mind the occasional tardies and is very clear and helpfull in her lectures. i would highly reccommend her. she only had 2 midterms and a final which she gives you a study packet before the actual test date.
I guarantee you one thing: you will NOT fall asleep in this class! Her lectures are like STORIES! So interesting to listen to!! And she really does get you ready for a 4 year college,(unlike other professors here who teach like high school teachers).
I'm not a regular student at SCC, and I wasn't looking forward to history in the summer, but prof. pattons lectures were very fun and straightforward if you're willing to learn. She expects her students to know a lot, but if you take good notes and read you should be fine. This was one of the best history classes I've ever taken!
The best history teacher I've ever head. She is not easy, but her lectures are very ingaging and very interesting. She does not assign too much homework, just some reading. I guarantee, you will never fall asleep in her class. She is very clear and helpful. Definitely recomend her!
Womem Emphasis study. If u miss her lecture, u'll miss on a day's good notes. She takes roll in her class, she's kind of funny (tries to be), she has 2 midterms, research paper, and a final. She's tough unless u really acknowledge the class. She's a good teacher ,but she is kind of hard. You have to try in her class like reallly hard.
Took this class over the summer, and it had quite a bit of reading (probably a lot easier during the regular school year). Professor Patton is an awesome lecturer! And even though she can be difficult at times, if you just apply yourself, go to class, stay attentive in class, you should be fine. She expects alot, but her tests are totally fair.
I wouldn't recommend taking this class if you have a lot of units or if you work a lot. This class takes a lot of commitment. There's a great deal of reading and you should be confident in writing in-class essays. Participation is 25% of your grade, and she scores you seriously. She's very personable.
The best teacher I've had in a long time! Though we disagree on a many things, she agrees to disagree, and tries not to force her opinion on you. The class is not difficult at all! There's some reading involved, but it's easier than most other classes I had. She does, however, puts a lot of emphasis on your participation in her class discussions
Sherri Patton rocks!! I learned a ton about African History (not the eurocentric view either). Don't expect a free ride...you must go to class or you'll be lost. She is a tough professor (fair but tough) and expects ALOT. If you're up for a challenge and want to earn your grade...she's the best!! If you're looking for easy...go elsewhere.
Patton is incredible, i took my first college hist class with her and i am so much more interested in history and have now taken three courses of her and really advise taking her for her US history classes with womens interests involved
not so easy
Prof. Patton is a fair teacher. She doesn't require that you be there, but you have to keep up on the reading or you will be lost in the class. She gives out a lot of information. The SIMULATION was great!
She gives too much work.. her lectures are great, but you have to take A LOT of notes. She is an okay teacher but DO NOT take her if you are not 100% committed to this class!! If you want to slide by not doing so much work, DON'T take her. Take her if you are a History major.. Other than that, DONT take her... not recomended from me...
Sherri Patton is an absolutely incredible teacher. She incorporates documents, movies, readings, and clear lectures into her curriculum. She's available to students and makes sure that she teaches to both auditory and visual learners. I've never had a better teacher.
Prof. Patton changed my outlook of the class in History in general, into a positive way. Always hated History and thought it was boring but taking it with her was fun and exciting....always something to look forward to the next lecture. Make use of the class participation, it's the only time you'll get heard.
Professor Patton is great!! I hated History in High School and had absolutely no interest in it whatsoever. She made it interesting (although I still "love" History) and if you take good notes/review them before a test everything you need is in the notes!
Excellent teacher. Take her class, however, when you aren't taking anything else, because you will do the work of 2-3 classes in this one class. You have TWO textbooks and TONS of non-stop reading with no chance to take a breather. One of the best teachers I ever had, but you will work hard. Take when you are taking nothing else.
Very Interesting teacher. Her African Civilization class is very eye opening. You must take good notes to pass test, but you don't have to remember dates.
Okay, these people must not want to do any work in a class. She is a great teacher. She provides study guides that cover alot of the main things she taught in the chapter, and only puts 1/3 of it on the test. Pay attention to lectures, I didn't even own the book, she leaves you with a question that she might quiz you on the next day.S he is great.
Very great teacher who really knows her stuff. She's very interested in what you have to say. Very demanding class, but well worth it. Take it if you get the chance, men and women alike. Very eyeopening. Very down to earth.
Womens Emphasis. Hardest class I've taken at City so far. I've gotten all A's the last 3 semesters and I am hoping to pull out a C in this class. 2 midterms and 1 final. i studied probably 10 hours for each test and my highest score was a 65. 1 research paper 5-8 pages. class is 20% participation so you need to go. VERY harsh grader but a nice lady
The Greatest teacher at Sacramento City College. She is the Best. I took Women History 311 with her and I don't even like history. I was 1 out of the 3 males in the class and I can't believe I enjoy attending her class. She is the greatest I wish all teachers was like her. I learned so much. She reminds me of Reba because of her southern accent.
History 310 Women's Empahsis is a very interesting class - Mrs. Patton had designed it that way. Your opinion about a topic is truly valued and will increase your grade. Her office hours are a great tool. Her teaching style is lecture but she'll ask you to share with the class what you've learned too.
Very informative and a great professor. The class is difficult, but she makes sure that you are using your mind. At the end it benefits the student!
She is a woman who understands that if she treats her students with respect, it will return to her. Loves her classes to be interactive. She intense, but it's soooo worth it.
I could tell that she was a very intelligent woman and new a lot about the subject, but she wasn't able to convey it properly to the class. The students were terrible and she wasn't able to keep anyone focused. Lecture does not correlate with reading, so both attendance and reading are vital in order to do well on exams.
i took her for summer class. it was really fast and a lot of reading but it was alot of fun. she made history interesting. if your not a talker and want to take her class i would become one because it is 25% of her grading
LOVED this class. Great professor and all around good person as well. The class was pretty easy as long as you showed up and took notes, which wasn't hard because Professor Patton made the material so interesting.
Women's Emphasis. Hated this class. Too harsh grader. Talked way too much. It annoyed me she cared too much ineracting with me and group work. Group was SILLY. Especially if you're shy. I dropped it before she could ruin my GPA
Sherri Patton is the best teacher/professor I have ever had. After I transfer, I would consider myself LUCKY to have a Professor HALF as wonderful as she is. She is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable, constantly challenging her students to perform at a high level. Everyone should take her classes.
Professor Patton is a wonderful teacher. Her lectures are clear and engaging and she even makes class fun. Make sure you do the reading and take notes and you will be fine. If you try your hardest and participate, this class will be worth your time.
She is a great teacher. Her lectures were so interesting; they made the class easy. I never bought the book, I just took detailed notes and got an A in the class. I wish she could teach all of my classes!
Patton is the most inspiring professor I have ever had. If you care about the current conditions of your country, she has a way of explaining the past so that it can be compared to the present. She's motivating, vivacious, and her humor tastes of irony. She's someone anyone half-way intelligent about social issues, can adore and admire. 310and 311!
AWESOME! She had me engaged the whole semester. She made everything so interesting that the tests were a breeze. If your not the best of writer or quiet I would suggest another professor. Attendance is essential because notes from the class are a chunk of the exam. I changed my major to Womens Studies after I took this class.
I hate morning classes..sleepy, but she will totally wake you up! Lots of reading & note taking. She has a great way of presenting material which makes it interesting and easy to understand! Attendance & participation is mandatory. Dont take if you are shy or want an easy A, but take her if you want to learn something!
She is a great teacher and very helpful At 1st I only took the class as a requirment and loved it. The 1st two weeks I wanted to drop it but was so thank ful I didnt taking her again this semester for 311. Wonderful teacher!!!
great teacher. very inspiring. however she is a tough grader. wants everyone to learn. three exams but can drop lowest. memorize ids and 3 essays but only picks one, hw is also a lot of reading.
She is truly interesting! Her lectures will make you want to go to class! Notes are not hard to take. She writes an outline on the board and pauses when she wants you to write something. Book is an easy read. She's so much fun and so liberal!
She is the best teacher EVER!Her lectures are very interesting and she has a passion for what she does. Do not take this class if you plan to breeze through because you won't! Her tests are not easy and participation is very important. I hated History prior to taking a class with her and now it is my major!
OMG!!! I love this professor. She is one of my best history teachers. Very passionate about her teachings, and wants her students to learn something. There are a lot of readings during the summer, but the class is worth taking. It may seem hard at first, but if you put effort into the class you will pass it like flying colors. She is the best!!
Sherri Patton is absolutely amazing. She give interesting, fun lectures, and really gets into it. sometimes she gets so excited about the subject, you can hear her southern twang come out. You must read before coming to class, and you get graded on attendance and participation. I loved her Woman's Emphasis class and would take her again.
she is rude! she will embarrass you in front of your class during a lecture. she is LOUD! she makes you feel like your always wrong and never gives positive comments or positive vibe. never again would i ever take her class. she constantly compare her UC class to classes at jr. colleges.
Very hard to understand when she speaks. She is all over in her lectures. I don't recommend her.
Patton is amazing. i have no idea why any student wouldn't recommend her. You MUST read before coming to class, but she's one of the most passionate teachers I've ever had. She totally rocks!
She makes History come alive and is very passionate about her subject.
She is one of the best teachers i have ever had as Sac city college. I really looked forward to going to her class. You have 4 quizes and you can drop ur lowest grade. You also have 3 big tests which includes the final. you can drop the lowest of the 3. she gives a study guide a week before the test so USE IT! theres also a paper
US hist womens emphasis. She is incredibly understanding. Not an easy class but well worth it and enjoyable. She's always willing to help, and she's one of a few that understands a working students responsibilities. I highly recommend her!
Very Harsh grader Its almost Impossible to get an A in her class. good luck who ever takes it..!
I like her and enjoyed her class and lectures. She hates tardiness.the only problem i had was her tests, to hard to memorize all the material she wants u to. failed both tests and didnt take the final but I passed with a C
Love everything about this class except that you HAVE to participate. If everyone in class is quiet, she gets angry at everyone....
Before this class I didnt really care much about history. Now I'm leaving this class with more than what I expected out of. You not only talk about history but she ties historic events w/ current events leaving you interested. AMAZING & inspiring teacher. Reading is required, tests are in class essays. She literally brings history to life in class!
Very hard.....
I would suggest that people not take this class unless history is really a passion of yours. As someone with a full course load with other difficult classes, I would say that unless you want to be worked, its not worth it. She is a great person, but she is not especially "laid back". Be warned: 10% of the grade is participation.
If you are a dedicated student and want to prepare for graduate school take her. If you want to whine and not work for a grade I would avoid her. I think that she is rude(on occasion) because the young punks in her class are ill mannered. I will take as many classes by her that are offered. She will make you think. A revolutionary.
We're not even halfway through the semester and my hair is already partially gray. STRESSFUL!!!! I stand at a low B right now and let me tell you, most work for a B in my life. READ READ READ...WRITE WRITE WRITE. Participation REQUIRED. Very strenous class, i dont recommend it.
HARD CLASS!!!!
Truly an amazing educator. I've learned more in four months that I've spent with her than four years in high school. Tough but you will learn, if you're resilient and genuinely care about your education.
If you like to skate by & be handed As for free, don't take Professor Patton's class. However, if you'd like to actually learn something, I can't imagine a better Professor. Her class takes work. There's 8 written assignments that REQUIRE 2-3 pages as a bare minimum (to get a C). I worked hard for my B, but learned a ton in the process. Love her!
As everyone else has said, Professor Patton has a pretty difficult grading style. I got by with an A by doing extra credit and focusing on EXACTLY what she wants in the assignments. This is the key to doing well in her class. Also, make sure you read so you can get a good participation grade, because it counts a lot. Overall, I loved the class.
Prof. Patton has so much integrity in what she teaches. I've never had a teacher nor professor devoted to the subject ad much as her. Do not take this class if you're not willing to work for your grade. You can only fail if you don't try! I highly recommend her if you're looking for a history course.
This class was way too difficult. She expects you to have read prior to coming to class and let me say the reading is dense and very tiring. She also expects you to participate as it is required for your grade. OVERALL: Don't take this class unless you are up for an extreme challenge. (Not easy to get a good grade)
I cannot explain to you in 350 words how much I loved Professor Patton's class. She absolutely loves the subject and teaches it very well. This may not be the easiest class, but if you actually do the work and show up, you can pass. If you really want to learn something, take her class! I may even take her again just for interest! :)
She is a good professor who makes history kind of fun, but she assigns WAY TOO MUCH READING. You had to read over 25 pages plus some articles prior to most class sessions. I could never keep up. Also, group discussions were part of most class sessions.
I loved taking African Civilizations with Professor Patton. She is very passionate about the subject and engages students throughout all lectures, making it way more interesting. She grades hard and expects you to do the work but she is a great teacher and really cares about her students
Very approachable and funny. Great discussions in class, very insightful lectures. Workload not at all difficult. Would recommend to anyone interested in history.
Prof Patton is a passionate teacher. You have to do work in class, but is not impossible to get a good grade if you really wanted to. Don't miss class if you don't like talking in class or it'll hurt your participation grade, Just follow her directions and do all the assignments and you'll be fine.
I don't like history that much but I enjoyed this class. It is a lot of work but if you need honors classes it is not that bad. Be prepared to read 50+ pages most weeks and write a lot. The group activities are fun and the discussions can be good if there are enough people.
Sherri engages her students by offering an in-depth and enthusiastic perspective of history while emphasizing women's roles. She's a great mentor! She makes history relevant to current events. Her assignments may take more time to complete, but you also learn more in the process...and you CAN get an "A."
I love Professor Patton. You have to work hard and attend classes regularly if you want a good grade. She expected you to read the material and be ready for class discussions. She knows her stuff.
Prof Patton is very passionate about women and gender throughout history, she gives 3 tests composed of an essay and IDs. She is always available to help, she expects you to read every class session as a part of class participation. Read, pay attention in class and you will pass.
It is very hard to get an A under her grading system. You have two tests and you get a study guide beforehand for each of them. She doesn't lecture and makes a group do a presentation each day. She does offer extra credit but they only help if you're borderline. Very fun class but there is a lot of reading and work for this class.
Strict teacher, but loves her job and has pretty extensive knowledge about her subject. Grading can be hard to get used to, and textbook use is mandatory on your own since her lectures are more of a general overview.
best history teacher
Fantastic. I recommend her class. People are rating her way easier than she is. In reality she is tough, but she is such a good teacher that if you aren't getting a B you aren't trying very hard. I learned an impressive amount in this class. She is super clear and detailed with excellent preparation. She gives solid feedback so you can improve.
One of the best classes I've ever taken, she is an amazing professor, and gave such interesting lectures! I lovvved her and her classs!
She's an amazing teacher. Her exams were hardest of all the classes I took at Sac City, but she's pretty generous with extra credit and dropping test scores. I'm sure there are easier history profs, but I'm happy I took her class.
Professor Patton is a tough grader and there is a lot of reading assigned but you leave the class with a better understanding of history. She gives great lectures and not once did I fall asleep in class even though it's not my favorite subject. She also gives plenty of extra credit opportunities.
Professor Patton is very helpful so come to office hour. Lecture is no doubt interesting. Professor Patton is on always on the move; she walks back and forth across classroom and lectures with a loud and clear voice. Make sure you do the reading and note-taking before class meeting as she often randomly calls on students for participation points.
Do your reading, take notes, show up and you will learn a lot!
very tough on grading. She admits she doesn't believe in giving 100%. Have to read every night and take notes on reading.(she will randomly check them). She also ask questions about the reading and you are expected to know for your participation points. Gives a very clear study guide if you do the outline for the study guide you should pass.
Took Prof Patton for HIST310 and decided to take her for 311 as well because of how much I liked her. Her lectures will keep you interested and make you learn a lot. She might be a bit tough and gets upset when most of the class does not do the reading but she is a sweetheart and is totally down to earth if you do your work and participate.
Relates history to current events, gives you the big picture so you're not in the dark with a bunch of irrelevant names and dates. After years of high school history book history, I was finally able to conceptualize time periods and events. Great sense of humor, lectures are engaging and enlightening. Lots of Work but you'll come out more rounded.
Professor Patton can be difficult to figure out, but once you do she's a great professor. Her grading system is maddening (she essentially does not give higher than a 90 on anything), but after talking to her and figuring out exactly what she was looking for, the class was great. Lectures are informative and engaging. Buckle down and you'll be fine
Professor Patton is amazing. She's clearly engaged with the course material and her enthusiasm is encouraging. Her dry sense of humor is refreshing when talking about such heavy subjects. Also, when I screwed up an assignment she took the time to tel me why and how it was wrong, instead of failing me for a rookie mistake. She grades tough and fair.
If youre looking for an easy A, this isnt your class. But if you want to learn, if you want to prep for a university, then this IS your class. She has a pleasent sense of humor and is very helpful critiquing your assignments for higher education courses. Prepare to read, participate and take notes
Attendance and participation matter. Speak up, speak often! Go to office hours! Professor Patton is very encouraging and helpful if you email her or go to her office hours. She is great with the material, research projects actually end up being interesting - lots of freedom to pick good topics.
If you're looking for a good History professor at SCC then look no further than Professor Patton. Her grading scale is based upon participation points within class, note taking (LOTS OF READING), office meeting (worth 5% of total grade), 2 tests, an essay. THE FINAL IS OPTIONAL, but if you did not take a test or completely fail one, take the final.
Patton is a tough grader, but an excellent lecturer. She expects you to participate and gets upset it you don't and don't do the reading. Tests are straight forward and only one short paper with a group assignment. I would take all of her classes because she's pretty entertaining.
You have to read a lot! 2 books & take outline notes for each chapter. Grades 4 sets of notes, tough grader. 1 paper for any set of notes that you choose. Exams are essays. You have to study for 3 different questions that might be assigned as an essay for an exam. Attendance is mandatory. Lectures are boring. Pop up note check so you must read!
Really fascinating material and great assignments. Perfect class to take if you want to develop your public speaking skills, whatever your current level.
Before I started this class I was a little worried that I would lose interest quickly, but Professor Patton made me want to show up every day with her relaxed and fun lectures.
Patton expects you to read and take notes well. If you can do that, you will be fine. She also gives really good advice.
What an awesome professor Patton is. Expect to read the assigned text before every class session because she might collect points to them on the day of class, it might seem annoying but you will thank her for doing so, It will keep you on top. I would take again, YES! She is funny and helpful. Only essay exams but she will always help you if needed
Expect to put more work in than you usually would in a history class but you will learn A LOT and she's incredibly entertaining.
Prof. Patton is an amazing lecturer who really makes history come alive for her students. You NEED your books to pass. Take notes for every class and come prepared. Participate in class discussions. There's 1 group project, 3 note-taking assignments, and 3 exams. The class is worth the effort! You won't find a better history professor, guaranteed.
The best class I've taken at SCC so far. Sherri is incredibly good at getting students to think critically and discuss/debate with one another. I really felt like part of a community of students working toward greater understanding, which is pretty rare in a classroom. Highly recommend HIS 360 to everyone.
This class opened my eyes to just how fascinating history can be. Sherri is an excellent educator & a very kind lady. COME TO CLASS PREPARED: read your assigned material, take notes, & participate in discussions. Her lectures are amazing! She doesn't award 100%'s, so don't get worked up over it. I worked hard for my A but feel accomplished for it!
You have work to pass this class. I guarantee when finish, you will see history in a different light. Be prepare to discuss that day's reading in class. She will get mad if you are not prepared. She is engaged, and participating will keep you engaged. She will make you laugh. She grades hard but fair. Will go the extra to help you if you need it.
Prof Patton is okay. She made history interesting, but I put in 3+ hours on my notes and always got a B on them. She rarely gives out A's, so you have to do really well on the tests which is hard. She is nice but I lost my 4.0 streak because of her.
Lectures are interesting and involve participation. Class had a friendly vibe as we were always enganging in discussions in groups. Professor Patton is very caring and passionate about teaching history.
You def. have to put in work to pass! But this was the most interesting history class I've ever taken. Lectures are interesting & engaging. She is a tough grader but she's fair. 4 papers, 2 tests & project. You NEED the books to pass & take notes! If you want a Prof who will keep you awake during history class, TAKE HER. She is an amazing teacher!
Absolutely MUST have all texts. Tough on grading, but fair. If you got an A, you earned it. Hilarious. She's passionate and invigorated, one of the best teachers I've ever seen. MUST take notes, both in class & from texts (she checks). Must participate - she'll call you out if you're quiet.
You absolutely need to do all the notes for the reading if you want to pass the class, otherwise you will be lost in the discussions and she grades for participation. She grades pretty hard on everything so by the end of the class you will be a master at taking notes. Learn from the first notes assignment and follow the examples she puts online.
NICE professor, BUT she brags about her reviews because she is a hard grader. a LOT of reading, (40 pages from each class). She gave you the test in advance but tbh the way she grades them is really subjective. Even though you have the right answer, if she does not agree on why that event is important your grade will no be higher than B.
She's a GREAT professor but almost impossible to impress. She would say I did great work & yet still gave me B's. Study the ENTIRE study guide she gives you, do the readings, take notes on them, and make sure your work is spectacular cuz she grades tough. I hated history but now I find it interesting thanks to her enthusiasm. You'll never be bored.
My absolute favorite professor! As a history major, I am incredibly glad to have crossed path with her at City College. I have taken her African History Class (HIST 360) and HIST 482 & HIST 311. I would take her again had I not taken all her classes. She makes you apperciate and analyze all perspective. History is a forest of time. Patton, you rock
She's the only history teacher I plan on taking! This class was hard for a first semester college student, she was understanding and patient. She has such a deep passion for history that you can feel it through her lectures! I respect her so much, she's eager to talk to the student after class to see how they're doing. I strongly suggest taking her
After having her for HIST311 I decided to enroll in her HIST310 class. She's definitely one of my favorite professors! Her lectures are thorough and interesting. My previous opinion of history being a boring subject has been changed and I'm so thankful for the many things that I've learned from these classes!
There are 3 exams and your lowest grade is dropped. She randomly checks notes, also two sets of formal notes due so do all of the readings. Class participation counts for 15% of your grade so show up and engage in discussions. There are extra credit opportunities. 5% of grade to meet with her by 6th week of semester, only lasts about 5 minutes.
Awesome teacher. Very funny and makes the subject interesting. Tests are difficult and you should be prepared to put in a sufficient amount of work but overall I think she is a great teacher with a great personality.
Professor Patton is an amazing, caring, and passionate teacher!! She cares for all her students and does not want anyone to fail and she makes that very clear. She is a tough grader but if youre in class and take notes you will do perfectly fine. She is funny and does not just have you take notes off of a PowerPoint, she engages with the class.
Patton really cares about her students. Yes, there is a lot of reading and homework but some of it is actually super interesting. This is one of those classes where if you do not put the effort it, you wont pass. There are a few of extra credit opportunities and there are 2 exams and 1 final- she drops the lowest grade if you take 3.
Professor Patton is very inspirational and knows what she is talking about. Attendance is mandatory as it is part of your grade, the reading is heavy and grades hard but it is college level work. She is kind and willing to work with you as long as you communicate effectively with her. Class discussion are always interesting
Professor Patton is a great history professor. She's very passionate and knowledgeable. She keeps things exciting and is easily accessible outside of class. She is a fairly tough grader and her work is rigorous, but if you're a history major you'll love her class. I highly recommend her African Civilizations course!
One of the most intelligent people I've met! I took her Honors U.S. History class and she made it engaging and rewarding. She makes you work for the class, but it's worth it, especially if you're a history major. The readings were interesting, too! I'd recommend to anyone who likes U.S. History.
Professor Patton is well respected because she cares and knows what she is talking about. Patton is an inspiration to students and a straight-up G!
Professor has high standards when it comes to reading and expecting to come to class with the knowledge of everything you were assigned to read the night before and be prepared to take notes for your reading. Group discussions and participation matters because you will be graded and the tests are hard - she's not easy to give a passing grade!
I loved Professor Patton. She is so sweet and caring, but she also has high expectations for her honors students. I really had to work for my grade in this class. So much reading and two partner projects which she also grades really hard. This is the hardest class I've taken at SCC, but I also learned the most.
She's pretty straightforward on what she expects from the class and is very easy to talk to. There is a lot of reading but there isn't much homework.
She is really nice and cool, and the class leaves opportunity to talk about so much more than the curriculum. The class is a lot of reading and she is pretty harsh at grading and getting an A on any assignment is hard. Most of the work she grades is based on complete/non-complete, so most things with an actual grade will affect your grade a lot.
Do not take this professor if.. you can't stand professors pushing their political ideology onto you. If you appreciate fact-based history class, this class happens to lean more opinionated. I've never had a history class where it' based on the teacher' perspective. Don't take professor if you actually want to learn about our amazing American HIST.
If professor want you to pass her class? nope, shes tough grader and stuff is so ridiculous if she want students to pass her class, I dont trust her at all, I put into a lot of work for this class and gave me lowest grades ever. dont ever take her class even if you trying to reach her and she would replied back in couple days later. BE AWARE!
One of the worst professors Ive had so far. Post discussion posts a day before its due date and expects you to know and somewhat memorize the assigned reading even though we only have 2 days to read about 20-30+ pages of material. Assignments over Spring Break so you dont even have much of a break. Online setting you must attend zoom.
Easy to not focus during her lectures online, very boring, rambles on and the point she tries to make arent clear whatsoever. Lots of discussion posts and will even have some of them due the same day as an exam when we should be studying for the exam, not trying to do a discussion. Dont take
Whole lotta discussion posts. Unclear grading criteria. Gives assignments over break and makes discussion posts due on day of a midterm which leaves little time to focus just studying for midterms. She gives off the vibe that she thinks were only taking her class. Dont take unless you want to get mad everyday.
DON'T take this professor unless if you want to get pissed every single day. I put SO MUCH of efforts into this class but gotten lowest grades ever. her grading is tough but grade criteria is so confusing. She don't even bother to response to emails because she's nearly impossible to reach her. Also, she always get upset if you don't participate.
She's the worst professor that I ever took. her grading criteria doesn't even clear at all. Also, she always get upset every single day if you do not participate the class or having your camera on but I already letting her know that something happen in my life but still attend to class and she doesn't care AT ALL!!! DO NOT TAKE HER!!
Such a worst professor ever took. if you trying to get hold of her through emails but she don't even bother to answer back. She will drop you if you don't have your camera on during her zoom session, THATS NOT OKAY AT ALL because I paid for this class and out of state tuition is no joke! I never understand her grading criteria and other materials
READ lots! (80 Pgs. A week)Though, the books interesting. Patton is extremely knowledgeable and VERY passionate about history. Fascinating class! Grading is often unpredictable, she expects a lot of evidence and analysis in ur work.. just give everything ur best time and effort to do well. 2 exams, optional final, and 1 project. 2 DBs per week
A 400-800 word, text book accurate, discussion board response will barely get you a low C. This professors grading style is beyond ridiculous, she doesn't grade history by fact but by her opinion. She expects you to read 100+ pages and come to the zoom with full knowledge of everything. Midterms are a joke, you get mark down for everything.
Professor said herself that she doesn't like to give A's. The highest grade I got on any assignment in this class was a 90%. Her grading system is arbitrary and there will be little difference if you put in a decent amount of effort or a huge amount of effort. If you need an A you should find another class to take.
An unnecessary amount of points in strange categories. Professor Patton has three notes due per semester worth 100 points. Not three notes per week, three notes all together for the whole semester. Why? I don't know. Gives very vague instructions and little feedback. "I don't give A's." This is city college, not Harvard...
Expects too much, puts in very little. Very mediocre teaching and bases her class around HER OPINIONS rather than HISTORICAL FACTS, which is ironic considering she teaches history? Skip.
I took professor Patton's American History class and it was a pleasant surprise that it was focused on Women's history. She took the material seriously and expected great things from her students, which made me excel in her class. Frequently went to office hours, wonderful person.
The professor always made herself available through her office hours and via email to answer any questions. She did have discussion post due but there was no requirement to respond to others. During the meetings you are really required to read, if not you are not able to participate in the discussion and loose participation points.
Super fun class, very interesting class discussions. Focused on student input within the discussions. Professor is available outside of her office hours and responds to emails pretty fast. Grading isn't too hard either.
Prof. Patton is one of those teachers that make the most boring subject fun. She only requires a few textbooks that can also be found online. You don't have to complete assignments every week, only 1 every 2 weeks which is really easy. The only thing you need to make sure is read what she asks to read and you will have an A, easy.
It's a honors class but she's a tough grader. Isn't the type of teacher to ever give a 100% EVER The midterms/finals ?s are posted for 2 weeks so you have plenty of time to work on them. It's an essay & short answers. 2 papers, 3 tests and she drops the lowest so the 3rd is optional. Participation in class and attendance means a lot to your grade.
Professor Patton is an extraordinary professor! I took History 310 in person and I really enjoyed the way she structured class. She was big on participation and attendance, and because of this I was very engaged in class and learned a lot. She is easy to reach outside of class time and responds to emails very quickly. Would definitely reccomend!
I had her for an 8 week course. The textbook is free. The work feels rly tedious sometimes. Lots of historical context needed and lots of discussion posts. The exams are all writing, with 4 short answers and one essay. Just do your best and you'll be alright.
2 midterms & 1 final for an eight week course is CRAZY. She is the hardest grader I've ever had. Feels impossible to get an A in this course. If you have obligations outside of this class & are taking harder courses DO NOT take this. I tried in this class & never thought I would struggle in a HIST course but she completely depleted my confidence.
Professor Patton's class had a lot of tedious work, but using Unstuck ai and the free textbook helped me get through it. Attendance is mandatory, so stay engaged.
