It is interesting how those who criticize Pennington and her grading write reviews that are replete with errors in spelling, grammar, and syntax. I wonder what their essays must have been like. So funny how it is always the teacher's fault why some one does not do well. Perhaps some introspection may help-then again, I doubt it. I earned a B.
Penninton's class is a bit dynamic but as long as you know how to pay attention you'll do well in her class. She does speak fast but she never objects to repeating herself or clarifying a topic. Put as much detail from her lecture and the required reading in the essay portion of the test and you'll do fine. I got an easy B from her.
first thing she says in class is that her notes are really improtant but she has no idea how to write them on the board. she is constantly erasing and scratching out things and she talks so fast you can't get everything down on paper. even if your answer on exams is correct she will give you no credit if it is NOT the answer SHE is looking for. one last thing, she is always going off topic and talking about stupid stories that really have not relavence to what we should be discussing in class. worst teacher i have ever had.
She is crazy....she is totally stuck in the 80s and she is not clear what so ever and give you pages and pages of notes and sees how long she can make every test question to try and confuse you....Basically, not good at ALL!!!!
I'm a history major and have recieved A's in history my entire life until I had Ms. Pennington. Most of her exams are essay style, and they have to be written the way that SHE wants them written. She is undoubtedbly a difficult teacher, and would give even some of the most intellectual people, a run for their money.
Ms. Pennington gives informative lectures, detailed expectations, and easy to satisfy. Compassionate and very personable. I took her for an honors section, and I got an A. The posts about her are misleading, inaccurate, and filled with grammatical errors. What does that tell you about the people who posted? Put forth an ounce of effort, and you wil
THIS TEACHER IS VERY DIFFICULT AND WANTS YOU TO DO THE ESSAY EXAMS THE EXACT WAY SHE WANTS THEM. YOU MUST BE VERY EXACT AND DETAILED WHEN IT COMES TO THE TESTS. SHE IS UNFAIR AND UNREASONABLE. BEWARE OF THIS TEACHER TAKE VARGA INSTEAD!!!
I am a history major and have received an A in every history class since high school. This is the first history class I failed. Do not take this professor. Reading the book did no good for exams and her notes were a bad mess. Take if you want to fail.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER-If you care about your GPA -- or what your transcript looks like-DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. (Oh & the one comment that says she's great-I'm betting she posted that one) DEFINITELY the worst I've ever had. I regret not looking at this site 1st.
DO NOT TAKE!!!!! Every comment on this site saying that she is the worst teacher is TRUE. Her notes are the worst, she writes over what she already wrote on the board which is all out of order in the first place. She puts questions on her tests that she doesnt even go over in class. LOTS of information in very little time. DO NOT TAKE
This is a class where you actually have to show up and pay attention, heaven forbid. If you take this class seriously and do your studies, you'll get a good grade! There are plenty of people that I see every day that come into class 30, 40, 50 min. late. You can't do that. Her lecture goes all over the place sometimes, so try to type your notes
DON'T TAKE HER CLASS! The only thing she determines your grade on are test that are very hard, and you practically need to memorize everything that happened in American history. I repeat... DON'T TAKE HER CLASS!!!
I learned soo much in her class! The greatest thing is that all her tests r based off of her notes! If you are willing to study her notes and memorize. Take this class you learn alot!
I love this professor! She is a crack up during lecures...giving lots of good info. w/ cute little entertaining asides. Take good notes and study them, and you'll do great on her tests. She knows her stuff...very well qualified! A wonderful person!
Summer 2007 - Very helpful when answering questions. She has fairly detailed notes which are helpful... But not quite enough. Reading is essential, especially for major topics which she provides for the essay portion. Grading is only on her tests because there is no homework except reading. Do not take her class if one fears losing GPA.
AVOID... then again i hate history...:/
She is absolutely the WORST teacher in the universe!!! Her lectures are rambling and her writing on the whiteboard is all over the place...she writes over her own writing. She lectures from a large notebook and has difficulty answering questons unless the answer in in that book. Her assignments are busy work. Don't take any class taugt by her!!!
shes a crazy talker
THe worst teacher i have ever had. Don't take her.
90% of the class failed. the only student (1 in 10 who didnt drop the first 2 weeks) had taken her before so was probably a favorite. impossible to please. but if youve got a doctors degree in teaching history, you should pass her tests with Bs.
This is a good teacher. All you have to do is take notes on lectures and study on them. I did minimal studying and got a B-. Teaches material very well reviews lectures on the next day. She even gives you an idea of what is on the test and hints on what the essay part of the test will be. I hate history and got a B in her class.
me and my friend got C for all of my test and final paper and she gave us D and F. I dont understand! Her study guide is useless. Not helpful at all. Can't hear what she's talking about during the class. Not very nice.
What can I say she is the best history teacher i have ever had.....hands down i admire her!!!!!
I am sure the positive ratings for this professor, were posted by the professor herself. Her lectures were incomprehisble ramblings, and her tests absolutely out of line. In teaching an Asian history class you would think she would use the names and spellings as in her text. NOT. 50% of the class dropped by week 2, don't waste your time w/this.
I just dropped this class today. Even after reading the comments on this site, I figured I am pretty smart and could get an easy B. I studied hard for this test and got a D. I'm not one of those kids that don't study. I have a 3.2 Gpa and have only gotten four C's in my entire life. Do not take!
Ugh...she talks WAY too fast and way too much. The tangents that she goes off on are completely irrelevant, she just wants to brag about the universities she went to. I guess the class is alright, but she expects you to read from the textbook WAY too much...like 20 points from every test needs to be STRAIGHT from the textbook. It's really very dry.
Lectures are incomprehensible and boring. Assignments are busy work and useless. Teacher is self consumed and tells personal stories about her divorce that border on tragic. Absolute worst teacher I have ever had. Waste of time...she will ruin your GPA! Most of the class got C's or less.
Horrible teacher. Her lectures are long and boring, at least 2 pages of notes per class. The first test wasn't even given until 2 months into the semester. Most of the class got C's or below. All she talks about is how poor she is and that she is divorced. I don't recommend taking her, your GPA will suffer like mine is about to.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had.
All she talks about is boring stuff, she strays off her stupid stories that are not even related to class. DO NOT GET HER!
Her lectures are so boring and straying off topic to talk about her equally boring life was an often occurrence. No matter how energetic I was at the beginning of class by the end I had fallen asleep.
I somewhat admire Pennington. She is a harsh grader but I do lean alot. This was my first college class and I have learned so much. I honestly think the reason why some people here think so badly of her is just because THEY did not get the grade they wanted, Pennington does teach well enough for anyone to pass the class
this teacher is horrible. She admitts to being a hard teacher the first day of school and you should take her advice when she says to drop the class if you get a d on the first test. Overall DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Everyone who has rated her in a bad way is a 100% right. She has no probleme failing 90% of her class. And she has no sympathy
ms pennington had very long and boring lectures but her off topic stories were somewhat amusing. she says that her tests are really hard but the multiple choice section is very easy and she gives you the essay questions ahead of time so that you can prepare them :] she taught well and she is very organized. she drinks coffee like everyday.
Yeah Pennington gives long lectures but they really help. Her study guides are basically the test. I studied by simply doing the AF and reading the notes really carefully once and I got a 94 on my first test. Paying attention and attending class is all you have to do.
Prof. Pennington is a very good teacher. Her lectures and outlines are clear and easy to follow. She is a very tough grader though. My suggestion is that if you care most about your grade, take someone else. But if you want to learn, and are up for the challenge, you will definitely walk away from her class a more knowledgable person.
She is an amazing teacher. I was quite hesitant when I first went into the class, since our grade consisted of only three tests, but it's not so bad! I've learned so much about history, and she actually made it enjoyable. Go to the classes, take notes, and study, and I don't see why you won't get a good grade! Definitely one of my favorite prof.!
NOOOO!!!! CRAZY B word!!! Overdoes the work load. Tests and essays are impossible. DON'T TAKE HER! So many people struggle and hardly anyone passes. The essay questions on the test take up like 10 pages to answer and she grades SO HARD! STAY AWAY!
People complain and tell you to stay away from taking her class. If you want to take a history class at C.O.C. without learning anything then don't take her class. She is extremely intelligent and knows her stuff. If you work hard, you will prosper. I will say her tests are hard, but the solution is simple....study.
She is not kidding when she tells you she is a hard grader. Go to class because you need the notes to pass her tests. She expects you to bring in outside information from the textbooks for tests. If you do not, she will grade you down a lot. She gives you a 5-7 page book review (DO IT!!!) & 3 tests. If you fail the fist test, drop the class!
I love this teacher. She may be hard at times, but she is fare and you learn alot from her. I've taken four different classes with her and loved em all. Every thing you need to know comes from her lectures, and her tests are mostly short essays, but she grades easy if you can get the essentuals across. You do have to work in her class though.
History has been one of my better subjects for years, but not so in this class. The day before our Book Review projects were due, I compared mine to a friends. They were the same exact length and I used a smaller font. He received an 80 and I got a 50. When I asked for some sort of justification, she said mine was too short. Do not take this class.
3 tests plus read a 300 page book on something in the pre-colonial era and then write a 5-7 page book review (not report. If you mess up on one of those you are basically screwed. Her tests are multiple choice with HARD essay questions that require info from outside sources somtimes worth up to 40 points for one question! She is hard but very smart.
ok after reading this site i though ok this teacher will be ok i am pretty goood with history. well let me tell you i was wrong i did not miss any classes and i took notes every day and i failed her tests are soo hard and you have to be so specific that it is impossible. what ever you do dont take this teacher it is for the best.
Okay. At first she seems like she is going to be a good teacher. pretty easy && nice.. Until she tells you she is going to put you in a seating chart.. Seriously when was the last time you were put in a seating chart Elementary School come on now.. CLASSPArTICIPATION is major. thats kida why she puts you in a seating chart so that she can call on
TERRIBLE teacher. Yes she is very smart and knows a lot, but that does not mean she is good at presenting her information to her students. She does not care about your grade and her essays for the test are WAY too difficult to meet up to her standards. WORST history teacher ive ever had.
Horrible teacher. Insists on a grading chart to quiz you for review day and tells you how horrible you are if you don't get the answer right and tests are extremely hard and she takes her time returning quizes and book reports. I do not recommend this professor at all. She wanders into side stories too much and the essays are rediculous.
Horrible teacher. Makes the tests too hard to pass and treats you like a elemtery school kid as she makes you stay seated according to a seating chart she creates. She makes you right a research paper if you miss a test and hardly stays on topic. Also only teaches what interests her not what is supposed to be taught.
oh lord almighty! pennington is HORRIBLE. her tests are impossible, her essays are ridiculous. i had to type up a 15 page paper on the puritans to pass the class with a C because i missed one test. if your smart you will AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This class is more like independent studies. She speaks the entire time, you have to write your own notes. Expects too much on tests, and essays! Do not take her!
You know, she is just a sweetheart. She really cares about students and she is just great. I would take her class a million times. Just work hard, participate and don't be a butt. She is a really kind hearted person.
She was a terrible teacher, her lectures were very very very boring. It was like she was talking to her stupid board instead of the class. She grades her essays for tests terribly, not a good teacher at all. Take Mr. Shea for this class, he will actually teach you something.
shes nice but shes extremely tough. i wrote 3 pages worth of flawless information for a 40 point essay question and only got 16 points. have to go over information a lot for tests as you only have 3 tests and a book review. not recommended class for anyone..not enough work to help build a good grade. youll get dominated.
You dont understand what she is saying half of the time because she talks too fast and you can hardly hear her. She is way to hard, the whole class is probabbly failing the class or getting a D. Her tests are bogus. She marks you down and write "irevalent" when actually thats exactly what she lectured us on. I dont recomend her at all.
She's nice as a person. As a teacher she's tough because she isn't clear on what she wants from you. The study guides are pointless, long, time consuming, and frustrating as they don't really help. She addresses only certain points, but digresses from the point so much you miss them. If you want a challenge take her. If you want a high GPA, don't.
She pretends to be your friend and smiles at you. then she rudely grades your assignments. She decided to assign a book review that has to be 5-6 pages. NO book review is that long. this woman is easy to follow for the first test. then it becomes impossible to take notes it just gets everywhere. and how dare she write "60 max" as a grade. RUDE
She is all over the place in her lectures. Her tests are impossible to pass. I made a 7 page book review and recieved only a 78%. it was ridiculous i felt like this class was a total waste of time. I went to every class session and still failed this class.
Do not take from this professor. She goes off on tangents, doesn't show up for class and expects you to know every tiny little detail she ever mentioned.
Teacher is very knowledge but is hard on grading, takes like a month to return work, literally and never really has an answer for questions regarding the class. She always just says come to my office hours.
Do not take her if you're trying to get a good grade. I did all the reading, (I am usually an A student) and ended up with a C. Her tests have essays and she doesn't give you the essay topics. She grades them very tough and can make you fail the test even though you did very well on the scantron part. She doesn't care that we can't read her mind.
This teacher is a good teacher. She is tough, and gives a lot of information, which makes it hard for tests. however, if you work and use your textbooks well, your grades will be fine. She wants details, lots of it. I failed my first test, and had a D on my book review. Then I truly wrote lots and lots of details, I got an A on my last two tests.
i walked in to class and after that first day i dropped it...she had a seating chart, last i checked i was in college not grade school...she expected every detail of what she lectures about on the test and she said if we dont do that then where most likely gonna fail...if your smart you would avoid her and walk away while you can like i did
Learned more from this class than any other college class I have taken. Only three tests which are all about the lecture notes. Very few multiple choice questions but worth many points. Hist 191 is this teachers favorite class to teach.
I could never hear her. She made us only pick one seat for the entire semester which was rediculous.SHe grades really unfair&hard. I completed a book review that i did very well on and she gave me a 68%. SHes all over the place and i was always confused. SHes the worst teacher i have ever had. she is educated but this class was def. a waste of time
Nice personallity but horrible in teaching! VERY HARD GRADER!!!!Most people droppped out by midterm. Do not take this class you wont survive!!!!
Ms Pennington is a good instructor and makes it very easy to follow. Lectures most of the time and gives helpful hints for tests. I recommend taking her class if & only U are the type of student that will read the material and take good notes. I took her for the Winter session and i love it. History is not my thing but she made it very interesting.
If the naysayers here were paying $300 a credit/hr instead of $26 they'd appreciate the amount of effort that Ms. Pennington has put into the Critical Analysis of a difficult subject in order to present the basic facts. I'm fortunate to have had my history class taught at a university level but at a Community College price. Thank you Ms. Pennington
Difficult but not impossible class. Best advice I can give you is FORM A STUDY GROUP. Gives a study guide before tests, but will have multiple choice questions that aren't on there. Assigns novels to read, not neccesary to read them, but use sparknotes. Essays are hard to do well on. Have to have a lot of details and at least 10 paragraphs.
Her class is a complete waste of time, her tests are impossible and there is absolutely no point in studying for them because she has no method to her grading. She never clearly states what she wants on her tests, and does not answer questions. She is the absolute worst teacher. The test load is atleast 4-5 hours of studying per credit per wek
She was nice & told good stories; however, her tests have no grading structure. I agree that detailed writing for essay tests are not enough unless your the author of the text. She doesn't say why she marks you off. Study & know it so you could repeat it back to others. Advice:if you have a degree in history then you'll do fine, otherwise don't go
Shes very sweet and funny her tests are just really really hard.. shes not to good with grading and she grades really hard. Notes are hard to keep up with and the forced seating isnt ideal for college.. i wouldnt suggest this class for a person who doesnt have time to give 300%.
Pennington is an amazing professor. She is a tough grader and many complain. Many people don't realize how great she truly is. Listen, take great notes, learn the material, and you will pass. Be very detail oriented if you want an A. Truly inspirational.
Very Very hard teacher! If you want a good grade you shouldn't take her! She's very nice & polite but maybe the hardest teacher I've ever faced! It's very unorganized!
She is the kindest lady & is extremely intelligent. She is a hard-core lecturer. She only puts an outline on the board & maybe a few keywords. Her tests are a bit tough. They're multiple choice & T/F & then she has either a large essay or a couple short answer questions & she expects every detail. It's all memorization. She's not an easy A.
She is the sweetest lady but her test's are based strickly on her notes alone. If you are good at memorizing she is very easy but if you think reading through the notes once will pass you; you are mistaken and will easily fail her tests. She is difficult but overall a great professor.
Book smart! More interested in her high salary than the quality of her ability to instruct. She wanders into side stories that are borderline slanderous too much. Her essays are ridiculous.
Nice woman, great and interesting lectures, but EXTREMELY tough grader, I studied extensively for the first exam and failed but passed the second. Do not expect you can just waltz in, she will make you work.
one of the worst classes i have ever taken. Her tests are extremley hard with no structure. She grades horribly it took her 1 and a half months to grade the book review. I would not advise taking this class unless you are a history major.
Impossible to pass her class. Test short answer questions and essays have to be packed with detail. She is no help what so ever
Professor Pennington is a nice enough woman personally. Her teaching style is a bit wearying though. Extensive note taking is a must during her rather long-winded and rambling lectures. In my class we were tested on material from an online resource that she mentioned but never taught from in class. Avoid her classes.
she is extremely hard. i didn't even make it to the first test before i droped. she does long note taking that she does off the top of her head and isnt clean on much. i have friends who stayed in the class and are failing. avoid her class!
The other comments are right on point. Pennington is an unjust and extremely unorganized teacher. After taking her class this past semester she has shown up late (including test dates) at least 10 minuets for almost every class and even 15mins late on two occasions. THIS IS NOT PROFESSIONAL. She grades very hard. Do not take her class.
She's a very nice woman although as a teacher she's very difficult. Her testing is rather obscure and the fact that her class begins with 35 people and ends with only 9 people taking the final is rather disturbing. I've never been in a college class where 26 students must drop the class in fear of failing. It's not right, avoid taking her class..
At first, I adored her. Then, someone told me that she was an unfair grader. Then, I freaked out. I immediately wanted to drop, but I stuck it out and studied seriously. It took more work than I planned. Study her study guides as soon as you get them. Attendance is a must. I'd read the book. Good luck and enjoy! I love Asian history now.
Before taking her class I looked her up to see what people said about her. The ratings were awful, but I had no option, so I had to take her.FACTS:Half the class drops within the first month 1/2,the other half that stays in the class,FAILS,she takes FOREVER to grade things, she's a SUPER tough grader, her method for grading are stupid.dont do it!
Very difficult class dominated by her lecture she teaches off the top of her head. Expects you to do a 5 page book report(minimum of 350 pages) in two weeks while keeping up with the other online pointless readings, textbook weekly readings, and notes. You might pass if you dedicate 100% of your time. I dropped that class and moved on with my life.
Stay as far away from this professor as you possibly can. By taking her class you are just preparing to fail. I did not learn a single thing, it was all repetitive from highschool and that's exactly what it felt like minues the seating charts.
She is the worst teacher I have EVER had. I take great notes and I study all the time. I studied extra hard for her class and I still got a very low grade in her class. If your words in your essay are not exactly hers she takes points off and dont try to question your grade on an essay she will lower the grade for "finding other mistakes"
I learned so much in this class. I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Pennington's lectures. She kept the class interested in learning. The class was by no means "easy", but it was fun!
Very hard! What she teaches in class is very different from the book. And the test has nothing to do with either or. DON'T TAKE ANY CLASS WITH HER!
She was the worst teacher I have EVER taken. History is such an easy subject and I FAILED her class after doing all the work and reading everything I was suppose and even going beyond to ask questions if I didn't understand. She's closed minded, talks WAY to fast for anyone to understand and should not be teaching at a community college. Dont take!
you get 3 tests that make up your entire grade, thats it. If you write down everything she says in her lectures you'll know everything for the test and if she talks to fast don't be afraid to speak up and have her repeat herself. Nicest professor I ever had, just expects a lot from her classes
Great lecturer but a terrible teacher; she cannot communicate in a constructive manner. Often it seems as though she was playing a "me against you" game, seemingly gloating over the demise of those that have become a victim of her inane grading skills. Ms. Pennington teaches in a rude and clumsy manner; insensitive and bullying, almost sadist. Sad.
HORRIBEl TEACHER! Such a hard teacher, she lectures so fast you cant even get everything down. 3 tests and a book review is all your graded on. Bomb one and you might as well drop. If your looking for an easy class to breeze through, i do not suggest getting near this teacher.
At first I really didn't like her. But then as the classes went on she was very interesting and in the end I enjoyed being in her class. All you have to do is go to class and pay attention and you'll get a good grade.
dont take her! really hard teacher, not worth it!
she is very nice and helpful all you have to do is ask any questions you may have. only someone lazy could possibly fail her class. the only downside is that there is only 4 grades she enters so work hard and get good grades on it. other than that shes very fair when you forget an assignment, you can turn it in afterwards.
She is very intelligent and her lectures are interesting. However her grading is tough and having only 3 tests doesn't help.
I cannot believe how lazy students are. College isn't supposed to be a breeze, you're supposed to learn. So yes, you have to show up, but why wouldn't you considering she gives you the test questions in her review sheets AND reviews them before the test? Very intelligent women, you'll understand US History fully, it's rewarding. I recommend her.
The first day of class I heard more about her personally then I care to know. Her expectations for a short-term class were ridiculous. I would not take this class if you had other classes or were concerned about your GPA. It is not about her grading, it is her teaching style..one I do not want.
She is tough as diamonds! She may only give out three test and a book report but she talks too fast, I even brought a voice recorder for her class and that still did not help! Might as well just read the book only instead of going to the class, you may actually learn more.
She is a GREAT teacher. If your lazy or dont show up you will fail. I took her for 111 and 112 I enjoyed both classes. she is real intelligent and knows her stuff. Just show up and do the work and you will do good.
I took her for History 111. Man she is so tough. You have 4 grades the whole class. Your screwed. She is all over the place and goes on tangents when speaking. She doesn't have a set guideline to follow.
Loved this teacher, what a nice lady. I took her over summer, you can tell she really loves this subject. I didn't use the book I just took lecture notes. I reccomend typing notes on an ipad or laptop because she has alot to say.
Dont take her class!!! Her first test maybe 1/8th of the class passed. if your looking for a class to complete your AA degree i would not suggest her as a teacher.
Her class was enjoyable. I fault myself for not doing better.
A credit to her profession. She reminds me of a gal that I knew who was from a small town in Kansas.
I loved her! She's so clear in what you need to know for tests, she repeats so you know what to write down. I think she's funny, and she's super nice. You definitely HAVE to show up to class and take good notes. Can't pass the tests without studying really well. I definitely recommend her.
Need to show up to class and study for exams. She is SO nice, she's willing to push exam dates back if people don't feel ready, even the lazy people who never came to class. She gives a review day and goes over EXACTLY what's on the tests. Only thing is, your grade is based just on exams. Nothing else, so you definitely have to study.
Great Class, Recommend it to all, who want to learn about the eastern part of the world.
She kept our discussions interesting and always told stories that went with the topic to keep it interesting. No homework just 1 book review on a book of your choice and tests. As long as you take notes and study them you'll easily pass.
I took her very first History of India class and really loved it. Her outlines are very long, but the information is clear and she goes over it several times before the tests. She's very passionate about this class, and it is not difficult as long as you are there every day, paying attention and taking notes.
Hardest class ever! She is a nice woman, but her tests were impossible! My class started out with 35 students, and there were 9 of us taking the final at the end of the semester. Those who dropped made a wise decision! If History is your thing, then go for it. But for people like me who absolutely hate history, do not take her! You will regret it.
I honestly really enjoyed her class. But I cant lie, she just gave so much information that if you missed one day, youd miss everything. she talks a lot and very fast in her lectures, but shes very helpful. Also, her test were easy but the essay portion was impossible to receive points on.
One of the best history teachers I've ever had. Knows the material and as long as you pay attention it is an easy A.
I didn't like this class at all!!!! All she does is talk about the subject. She gives you a book review and was really hard on grading on things she didn't even talk about that was required. Only has 3 test but also is very hard on grading her essay part. Do not recommend this class.
the best teacher ever
DO NOT TAKE HER! She will talk the whole period (80 min) without stopping, and you must keep writing non-stop for (80 min) she does not write on the board; all she does it talk. If you miss something there's no blackboard to look at the lecture, does not use power point. She makes you buy the book and never use it in class.8 out of 10 students fail
Monotone and extremely challenging exams
She is a nice lady but i do not recommend taking her! Withdraw ASAP! I don't mind boring classes but seriously needs to focus on giving lectures a different way and speak louder too! Her grading is awful, your grade is based on taking 4 tests throughout the semester and 10 extra credit.Their was 30 students at first and 8 at the end of the semester
I loved this class!!! Lots of people did not like it because the way she graded but if you pay attention, take good notes, and do well on the exams then you are fine. She only gives 4 exams and a book review so do well on all those and you are good to go! The essay part of the exam is hard but know your info and you're gold!
she is nice but DONT TAKE THIS CLLACE with her, I loved her personality, but DONT TAKE this Classe with her, I worked hard durig the semester and I got F I've never missed her classes. please if U think take this classe dont.
She lost a test of mine, took an unreasonable amount of time to return other tests and assignments, and was late EVERY DAY. I've never posted on this website before, but I had to for her: DO NOT TAKE HER. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. She cracks down hard on essay questions and is incredibly unprofessional. Do yourself a favor and take another teacher.
Took her for 111 over the summer. Just 3 easy tests and that was it. She's a really good teacher, and is pretty funny sometimes. A lot of people didn't do well in the class because of the essay questions, but honestly, just write down everything on the board and you'll be fine. This was one of the easiest classes for me at COC.
She's amazing. She's really passionate about what she teaches. She makes the class pretty easy to follow and helps you as much as she can. She's a very sweet lady. Take notes and you'll be fine.
This class has several exams and a couple of papers, although the requirements are very clear in the syllabus and she hands out review sheets for the exams. If you do the work you will get a good grade.
She is a nice women but her class is way to hard. The class is a total of 400 points 3 tests and 1 essay. She grades the essay paper more strict then my English professor grades, and she is not even a English teacher. This is a super hard class avoid taking it at all costs. I was forced to withdraw and waste all my money and time...
She is ridiculous! This class is just about impossible! I've been a Straight-A student my entire life and I can barely pass anything in this class. She grades the essays like a Harvard English professor, her tests are barely any questions, the online documents make no sense, and she's crazy! She talks about her personal life constantly. AVOID HER!!
seriously, this class was way too difficult for a general ed course. she's a nice person but a terrible teacher. she teaches in a way that is difficult to follow. all of her notes are from lecture and it's hard to keep up with her. i have difficulty spelling and she takes points off for miss spells. do not take this class.
She is a extremely hard tester! She is a very nice & polite lady. I enjoyed listening to her lectures. However, she speaks very fast and is hard to keep up with when taking notes. Also, you might as well not even buy the book for the class because she grades you according to her lectures only. Her grading depends on your test & she tests hard!!!
Nice person. Make sure you pay attention to the lectures and STUDY for the test, esp. focusing on the essay prompts she gives you before hand. Her lectures tend to have a lot of information you don't need, but the important stuff she goes over well.
Very nice teacher. Its a hard class but as long as you pay attention and take good notes you will do well in the class. You don't need the book but you do need the access code for the online readings that are cruicial for the test. Take her winter class and get it overwith without a term paper
She is a very polite teacher! I took her class in the Winter Session. While taking notes, she did go off topic time to time about her personal life, but I enjoyed the stories she told us. It made the class less boring. If you're a little hard on hearing, sit closer to her because she is a quiet speaker. I recommend this class, just pay attention.
Using my life in order to explain what others have accomplished seems rather mundane. It's bragioli and she's the type of stand-up routine you'd expect to see in Las Vegas.
She turned something static and innate into a type of competition; she versus us. A hard class taught by a even harder woman.
Does not use blackboard or power point or that actual board. She comes to class and will talk for the whole time non stop, so you must write fast and never miss class. You won't ever use the textbook. DO NOT TAKE HER.
Uses online documents that are hard to understand. Notes are hard to follow. Doesn't go in depth. Gets off topic easily.
Her lect notes are precisely on the test and she giveshints you the short respessay that will appear on the exams. She talks fast so prepare to write quickly! Moreover, there are 2 novels to read (do READ THEM, they r on tests as essayq's). Essays r not bad, she allows outline. There is a book rev and she marks down bad grammer on book rev!!
This was my fourth class taking her! I suggest you use a laptop to type notes! When you study, focus on the essay! Practice writing the essay as if she is lecturing it to you. I have perfected her test because I outline my essay the same way she outlines the topic in her lecture notes. No HW! Only test and book review is what your grade is based on
She is a very hard grader!! Every class is a lecture, take lots of notes. I did learn a lot from her. Only two papers and two tests. Only recommend if you want to work really hard for your grade
This class has two tests and a paper. She grades critically on the paper without much feedback. The tests are killer. You have to memorize the lectures. Write practice essays. You will thank yourself later
The lack of textbook was only a bonus until I realized that when I had informational gaps in my notes, I had to search the internet, which wasn't always accurate or what she taught. She does not allow recording, so make sure to take stellar notes, participate, and write practice essays. The 2 essays were cake, but the 2 tests killed me.
Pennignton is a tough grader and has no care for some students. It's very hard to understand her lectures considering all she does is talk. She speaks way too fast and won't clarify. Her tests are really tough, and you must put in detail and get down to the specifics. She is very tough teacher. I recommend to not take her class ever.
Tests are easy if you study. READ HER LECTURE NOTES AND ONLINE SOURCES.
Tough course from a very good History professor. Ms. Pennington is the department chair (deservedly so), and her courses are recommended for history majors or transfer students. You will have to work hard in order to earn an A, but regardless of grade, you will learn.
Nice lady but unfortunately, she goes far far off topic one too many times. She is very picky with the essays. READ the online documents. No textbook needed. She talks quickly and you don't get a good understanding so the questions on the test may be difficult when they require you to give it thought. Many fail her tests. Know EVERY SINGLE DETAIL.
Pennington is such a sweet professor, though a tough grader. I received so much information from her class to take with me for the rest of my life, but do not take this class for an "easy A". Every grade is deserved, and she is a wonderful lecturer. Don't buy the book. Literally be able to recite your notes forwards and back for a B in class.
I had her last year. She is so nice, kind, and I enjoyed listening to her lectures. I admire how she remembers all her outlines and everything she wants to put on the board for all her classes. She really knows a lot about history. She is very understanding and will even push back a deadline. I liked to participate, fun class! Thanks Professor!!!
Won't allow recording, but all test material comes from lecture notes that are given way too fast. There were only 3 test and an essay (no other source of points), so if you don't do well on one, it'll hurt your grade tremendously.
This is a tough class. If you're good at history, or a hard worker in general, this is a fine class for you, since you'll need it for GE. This is not a class for my type, who want the easiest way to circumvent any traditional learning and only take art classes. She's a bore, and her lectures are DENSE. Every word matters. Also, she's harsh on essay
This was truly the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. But .. I learned more than I ever have in my life and I love the things she taught me about religion and a whole different world I knew nothing about. It's almost like taking a foregin lang. All new info. 3 hard tests- essay format, 2 boring books to read, 1 book review. Don't need book
Tests aren't too bad and consist of some obvious matching and multiple choice questions and a tougher essay section. Tests entirely on her lectures and she goes through a LOT in a day. She expects you to read 2 novels (Monkey and The Gossamer Years) and then a 3rd 300-400 page history book of your choice that you have to write a 10 page paper on.
I took her History of India class and really enjoyed myself. She makes you learn the material she teaches you. It's obvious and she's good at teaching it, so I don't know why she has such a low score on here. I liked her and definitely would take her class again.
I took her summer class and here are the keys to success: ignore the textbook, go over the notes from class every day, carefully read the online sources (only the ones she tells you to), and drill every review question. She gave us review questions and a list of online sources to go over before each test. Only study what she tells you to study!
An outdated subject but taught well. Definitely from the Dark side.
just don't EVER take this professor, unless you are majoring in History. RUINED MY GPA!!!!!!!!
It was a terrible experience she is very fast and I only have two test . She was not helpful at all.
Do not take her. Ruined my GPA.
Probably the worst teacher ever, constantly Talks so fast as if she has redbulls everyday, and dabbles on about how poor she used to be until she got a teaching job . the lectures she does are very fast and the quiz sheets are confusing and she never uses good markers. hard to read the board. theres a textbook but never used. WORST TEACHER!
Alright here is how to pass her class 1) Take notes from her lectures, her lectures are the tests 2) DO NOT BUY THE BOOK I took 111 and 112 and never opened the book (trust me) 3) 1 book review and 3 test, study hard and you will be fine She is passionate but this class is not horrible as rated, just work for it
Nice lady , but she tends to go off topic a lot. Throughout the semester you will have 3 tests and 1 book review & a final . Be sure to get C or higher on all , or your grade will suffer .
Great teacher, very passionate and will answer all of our questions. She will tell stories that are related to the topic and it blends with the notes so well. Only history class where i didn't fall asleep, she is very engaging and loves her students
No just no. Do not take her class if you have a life, she's a nice person but horrible teacher. She lectures every class for the whole class and for the test expects you to memorize a book of notes inside and out from her lectures. I really recommend not taking it, hardest history class I've ever taken and I actually like history but not this time
Everyone at COC thinks she's so hard. Here's the truth.. she's the quality and difficulty you should expect at a college. This is not a cake walk and it should t be. She's passionate about her subject. Do the readings, study, you will learn a ton. Love Pennington. Don't take if you're a slacker
very knowledgeable, super smart and knows a ton. But there are 3 tests and one paper and your whole grade depends on that! She is a really tough grader and she sucks at communication. you need to dedicate your life to this class to get an A. But good information. Lecture heavy
She puts up way too much material on the board, goes too fast for you to really right anything down and is the toughest grader I've ever seen. DO NOT take this class if you value your GPA PLEASE!
Nice lady but bad teacher. Extremely softspoken no leadership skills. Lectures hard to keep up with and she changed her tests. She does 5 possible essay questions based of BOTH of the textbooks and including her lecture. Dont take if you have work or other classes, it will just be a burden
She is honestly the worst professor I have ever had. All her class is 3 exams and one book report. And she grades each of those 4 assignments extremely hard. Getting an A is virtually impossible and half of my class dropped out by the end of the semester. She doesn't even teach the material well, she goes over everything super fast. Don't take her
Worst professor I have taken. Grades extremely hard and is not clear with notes. Impossible to do well on tests. More than half the class dropped, the 10 people who were left got D's and F's. I retook this class with a different professor and got an A.
Worst Professor EVER!!! she goes off topic when she lectures. she grades only on one book review and 3 exams, someone like myself who is in DSPS wouldn't let me record her lectures. couldn't see the board and i sat up front, horrible writer. dropped her class before it affected my GPA. please do not take her!!!
TIPS: Do not buy the textbook. Her lectures are 100% the test. Take notes on a laptop. Practice writing essays. Unless you're a history major or willing to work hard, avoid this class. Students are lazy and expect an automatic A. I have horrible listening comprehension, took 5 classes and did well. This will be your hardest class for the semester.
She does not off extra credit like she said she would in her lectures, she has bad communication skills, she talks the entire class, and one of the toughest graders, about 2/3s of the students dropped her class, I stuck it out hoping to get a C but missed it by 3 % , highly advise students not to take any of her classes, there s better out there.
If you don't attend class, you will not pass. The whole class is based on her lecture, only take her if you absolutely have to. Best suggestion is to take your laptop and type everything she says. You must remember all dates and the chronological order of events in detail for all the exams. Using the textbook will not help you in this class.
Truly, honestly the worst teacher I have ever had. All she does is TALK THE WHOLE TIME. Not once does she ask us if we have questions or pause to process. she talks faster than u can write so ur notes turn out illeterate bc ur just trying to get the info down. Expects us to test how she did at Her Ivy League school? no online resources& she awkward
She is only for history majors. 3 tests and 1 paper and 9 points for extra credit total. Nice person but seriously needs to chill out on grading. Asking questions ends like this "good question let me find out" which is never. If you are not a history major please don't take this class, It will ruin your grade.
Great professor. Energetic and caring. Many COC students are pathetic because of years helicopter parenting. Pennington is clear, grades fairly, and has reasonable expectations. She makes you work, but the demands are reasonable. The complaints posted here say more about those complaining than her and her teaching. She is genuinely nice and fair.
When you major in something that's not respected, you know how to be disrespectful of others, regardless of difference in opinions.
This class was very difficult and I struggled a lot. She knows her information about history but I was always lost or confused during every lecture. I only liked to come to class to listen to her stories about history.
The class was difficult, but useful and Informative. It's a very specific course which means you'll need to put in effort if you want a good grade. She won't just hand you an A or B. She overall is a really great professor and is will to work with you if need be.
Prof. Pennington is really sweet, but I had a hard time the class. She only has 3 tests and 1 paper and that's all she grades on, plus some extra credit. My main problem was she handed stuff back weeks after it was turned in, so I wasnt sure on how I was doing for a lot of the course. I wouldnt take her again unless I had to, even though I like her
Pennington is a nice lady, and I thought her lectures were enjoyable. However, I had a hard time in this course. She grades on 3 tests and 1 paper in the whole course, which isn't a big issue by itself, but she literally took months to hand back grades, so for a lot of the class you don't know your grade. Because of that, I wouldn't take her again.
Caring teacher who wants you to succeed but you just have to put in the work. The semester is made up of 3 test/1 book review so it is important you study and come to class. She grades in a timely manner and has interesting lectures. Plus if you're interested in history she offers many interesting side notes on places to travel or books to read.
Very sweet and caring, but extremely test heavy. Essay portions of the test are extremely hard to get a good grade on (even if you write 6 pages), especially if you leave out one little detail that's important. I'm usually a straight A student, but got a C on a test (even though I studied super hard)... ouch.
brilliant, an expert in Asian studies and head of her department, but this keeps her from returning your work for weeks with no feedback. You won't receive any work back for at least 3 months into the semester. She also takes multiple absences and cuts out major pieces of history as a result. Don't buy the book, you wont use it once. No one passes
Professor expects you to know everything from the lectures in essays and a very tough grader. Grade is determined by 3 tests and a essay. Wouldnt recommend unless you have photographic memory.
Lectures and notes were very vague. Tends to get off track quite frequently and will talk about personal life more then class material. Book report instructions were poorly given and exams are mostly essay format. History is one of my favorite courses to take and this class had a adverse effect on my interest in history.
You will not be bored in this class. Her lectures keep you hanging on to her every word. If you miss a class you will get behind very fast! It is critical to take very detailed notes. There are only 2 tests and one paper. On the first test my essay questions was 5 pages. Cramming for her tests will not work. Only seroius students in this class.
Kind of a quirky person who will talk about a bunch of stuff usually unrelated to the lectures. The lectures are often spending a lot of time on stuff you probably won't need for her exams. Within the first couple weeks I already had 5000 words of notes, and that still wasn't enough for the exam. (Which is half essay, half multiple choice and word)
I have usually always been good at history, Ive never gotten anything less than a B, especially in U.S history. She grades mainly on essays and if you leave one thing out that she finds important, you wont pass. She goes off topic a lot about her personal life and then wonders why no one does good on her essays. Dont take her
This professor expected us to more or less memorize our textbooks and regurgitate every detail to her through our essay questions on exams. There are very few chances to bring up your grade if you do poorly on something and she does not give extensions for assignments. If I hadn't dropped the class, I would have failed.
She seems to be specializing in the differential treatment of some people who have not studied well and who have had conflicts with her. if you go deep into the question and ask her, she will come up with a perfunctory response to "This is not very clear." Even more excessive, when I pointed out that the content she taught was wrong, she kick me out
Want to know a way to make a boring subject more intolerable, endure a semester with MS. Pennington. Her effort 2be creative, if there is one, is carried out with a minimum of effort or reflection. Some dull personal detail that could be considered slanderous and even sophomoric, reflect her far-left ideology and that includes ignoring facts/truth.
It's a tough class with with only 4 exams and a paper. You'll pass as long as you attend every class, listen to the lectures, and take notes. I hated history and never got a decent grade in it. However I passed this class with a B. She does go off on random tangents, but she's an amazing professor who'll keep you interested in the lesson.
Sherill is a very nice lady, but her class was really challenging. Tests were essay questions, so you really need to memorize. Her lectures were too fast and too heavy, hard to write everything down. Book report was hard with difficult formatting. Not for those with busy schedules. I hope she improves, because she is really nice, just too much work
She is very nice, but needs to change her rules. Her book reports don't have clear instructions, and her tests need every detail from the book, which is hard to memorize. She gets off track many times, tends to go off topic randomly. Very hard to keep up with her lectures. Don't get me wrong, she's nice, but needs to make some changes.
I do not recommend her. She is tough on foreign students from South America, Africa, Asia. Not all of us learned U.S. history. She will triturate your philosophies and honorable approach when you need help.
Professor Pennington's class is definitely difficult. It is clear she wants you to understand the material, however, the lack of assignments makes it hard to pass. There is only a few tests and one book review which are all graded very tough. If you have the option to take another professor, do it because her class is extremely difficult to pass.
Professor Pennington is awesome! Her class consists of 3 exams total, and one book review (5-7 pg). The exams are based mainly off her lectures, so it's crucial that you attend class and take in-depth notes. They're only hard if you don't take the time to thoroughly prepare yourself before hand, because everything on the tests she covers in class.
Honestly one of the worst professors I ever had. Was a really hard grader, and did not curve.
Her class is to difficult considerng the importance of the subject. Maybe 50 years ago when liberal arts was the thing, she would have excelled. Today most of my clasmates are working in the sciences. Don't get me wrong, history is important for some but not most. Times change, history doesn't.
Professor Pennington is an extremely hard professor who even said herself that no one gets As in her class. Her expectations for tests are extremely high since she expects you to recite what was said in lectures and what was in the historical texts assigned for HW word for word. As a straight A student, do not take this class. She ruins your GPA.
Alright. This class pushed me to limits I have never reached before and anxiety I have never had in ma life. She tells you to use details from the two books but you'll still pass good if you don't. BE VERY VERY DETAILED IN th ESSAY. REMEMBER ALL OF YOUR NOTES AND TAKE SPECIFIC NOTES. 3 tests. Write fast. 50% multiple choice and 50% essay. notebase
Extremely unfair grader, offers little to no feedback, finds a way to make really interesting material extremely boring, glosses over important facts while focusing on unimportant details that MUST be remembered for essay questions.
The Professor is difficult to work with and ruthless when it comes to grading. She was willing to fail the entire class and did not offer to curve the grade or give extra credit. She is overly critical in an excessive manner. This is my first time ever writing a review and I think it must be done to warn other students.
This teacher's expectations are unclear. She rates your paper's subjectively. I attended office hours weekly to make sure that I understood the instructions and to get her feedback on my drafts. She gave me a failing grade on my writing even though I followed her feedback. She is biased & has no interest in student success. Run for the hills.
This teacher didn't teach at all! She assigned chapters from the textbook and expected you to follow a very vague and unclear outline. Her grading system was very unfair and would mark you down if she suspected you of using notes/reading during a test and during a virtual class! This class makes history boring and extremely stressful.
I took the short term winter session History 112 class with Proffesor Pennington. She is a very tough grader and the class is limited to 3 discussion boards, 3 tests, and a 5-7 page book review (book has to be minimum 300 pages) that is worth the credit of 2 tests.. If you struggle with writing this will be very difficult.
U need structure 2 learn? Dont take her. Class is all over the place. She will not reach AT ALL! Only drops in every other week 2 tell u theres something due. Shell give assignments correlating w/book, but information not in the book. Expects u 2 memorize DETAIL 4 DETAIL on test w/ no material allowed 4 help on it. Very rude when communicating
Occasionally dressed inappropriately for class. Definitely lectures with a bias, but her facts are generally correct (occasionally uses a few unsubstantiated or sketchy illustrations and stories). Tests are graded fairly, but essays that disagree with her views might get some nit-picky comments.
Run FAR away from this professor. I needed the class so I took it despite the horrible reviews about her, what a huge mistake. I've only gotten A's in my 3 years at COC but had to drop for fear of failing. Her tests are insanely difficult since she'll ask random insignificant questions worth your whole grade. DO NOT TAKE THIS LADY's CLASS!!!!!!
Avoid this professor at all costs. You need to have god levels of perfection on the essay portion of test if you want to pass at all. There is zero feedback on any exams, you cant see what you got correct or wrong. Canvas is limited on the grades not allowing you to see needed scores. Zero lectures and hope you enjoy reading linked online articles.
Do not take this professor. She grades way too hard and will not elaborate on what is enough detail. Had to drop the class so my GPA didnt drop. Select a different teacher
I've only ever gotten A's and in this class I got nothing above a 70%. She doesn't give feedback on tests or discussions. I had to drop the class because it would affect my GPA that much.
Did not give any clear directions and struggled with majority of her assignments because of how poorly worded her assignments were.
Only taking this 1 course expecting it to be easy. Definitely looked up the wrong professor. If you work or have friends, don't take this course. All my free time for the 5 days I took it was filled with the stress of taking notes and worrying about the 4+ hours of videos assigned for each section. Also uses a random non MLA format for essays.
I didnt last 2 days in this class! She assigned outlines that were very detailed but we had to fill the notes in from 4 hours worth of films and long readings. She doesnt respond until days later EVERY TIME. Luckily, I didnt need her course because it wasnt a section F course for my actual school so I was able to drop without hurting myself.
i took her for grad credits and loved her so much, i emailed her around 8 times throughout the short term course with questions that took my grade from a B+ to an A. if you are willing to work a bit you will breeze thru this class :)) 100% recommend
If you are a high school student (I’m from west ranch) take her!! You’ll thank me later she’s amazing and it’s an easy A. I did ap world history and got a 3 and a 82% but got a 94% in this class!!
A bit of work to do but I learned so so much in this class. 110% recommend
amazing professor!! recommend to any student needing the history cred
So much reading but easy tests and papers! mine wasn’t proctored and answers are found online
She doesn’t round and I was 0.4% from an A but otherwise her class was a breeze, if you try and spend at least an hour on each assignment you get near 100%
She definitely makes you work for that A and wouldn’t recommend if you aren’t looking to sleep through the class. I didn’t like history and passed by with flying colors because I pretended to care. Email her with any questions, she will give more feedback and better paper grades if you are nice and pretend that you are interested in her class
if u are taking this class online take it with her, i spent maybe 6 hours TOTAL on a winter class and got a 95% as long as you are an alright writer she’ll give u full points so easy
I’m practically a D student but got a B in this class so it must be easyy
Amazing teacher! I’ve known her prior to having her class and can personally say she’s an amazing teacher and person. So helpful!
Lots LOTS of reading so prepare for that! Take her take her take her! Cannot recommend enough! I got a B+ but I have learned more than classes that I passed with 105%
Switched from another teacher and it made a huge difference! went from a C to an A in a week, currently in the spring class and i’m loving it so much. I feel like it would be better during the summer or winter sessions as it drags on a bit
Chill class thus far really boring subject matter tho but she’s alright
she gotta bad rep but she’s gotten better teaching wise and i think coc made her grading more lenient and easier to get an a. in her class rn and have a 97.8% so take that as u will
TAKE HER!!! She changed her style of teaching SO MUCH from the summer 2021 course to winter 2022. My friend had her in 2021 and said she was a bit harsh but now her quizzes are so easy and fun!
Easy af!! Take this course if you want an A, i didn’t even do the assignments and she didn’t gaf
This class was mildly harsh but I’m not your 4.0 student so I thought it was fine. I am a math major and got a B+ which was fine but i came into this class not knowing anything about presidents as I am not from the us but take her plz!
very very rigorous class that i was not prepared for what so ever but she was helpful throughout the process of me almost failing because i have terrible memory. my friend said she did great in this class but she’s a history geek so
great teacher take her guys! she provided so much feedback and helped me grow as a person and my academic career
her written assignments can be challenging but her quiz questions are repeated and are available on quizlet and other free sites. it was open for 24 hours and no proctor. super easy just read and select a few multiple choice and you’ll be ok
Easy as hellll! In her class rn for spring and have been getting straight b’s. In this class I just cheat and get a 100% on all quizzes
So easy. This class was a joke. Hard to be proud of your grade when the slackers get the same points as the hard workers. How can I be sure I learned anything when there doesn’t seem to be any rigor? She’s nice. I just wish the class was more about learning than just feeling positive about the class.
DON'T ENROLL PICK ANY OTHER CLASS! Contacted her multiple times about help and grades but she gave short vague answers. 3 discussion posts 3 exams and 1 book review. HARD GRADER. doesn't teach all she does is post articles and makes you watch 6+ hours of docs each chapter, this is coming from an A student and ill be LUCKY if I get a C in her class
Awful teacher, never responds and is an extremely harsh grader. The amount of work that you do is astonishing in such little time
Very hard grader. I have taken her before in another class and she is the toughest grader. She expects to write down every little detail and memorize a lot of info. No matter how much I tried and read, I would get D's in every assignment even though I am a history major and do well in History. She is the only professor to teach Indian and Asian his
This teacher is the worst I ever had, sent them multiple emails for an explanation on the discussions because I have lost a lot of points, didn't make any sense when she replied. There were times where she sent a smiling face to my question. We had to read a bunch of lessons but said that we can't use our own notes for the test it was ridiculous.
THIS TEACHER SHOULD NOT BE TEACHING! She is rude, acts like she doesn't care. DOES NOT give extra credit. EXTREMELY HARD GRADER! Does not respond to emails. When I asked if she graded my Midterm fully. She replied with "When I get around to it". She should be considered an HONORS teacher due to harsh grading. DO NOT TAKE HER! HEAD THE WARNING!!
This class was unbelievably stressful. If you plan on taking this class make sure it is the only one you take during the semester. Extremely lecture heavy and detail oriented. Memorize all tiny little fact and then some, this professor is such a tough grader it is impossible to pass if you don't do otherwise. DON'T TAKE if you plan on transferring.
She barely responds to messages and not socializing very dry. I know she has a higher position at that College so she thinks nobody can touch her and she can do whatever she feels like. Maybe an old grumpy lady, that is bored or has lost the passion to teach. The same grading and mannerisms happened to another student that I've talked to. smh
the rudest and worst professor I have taken at coc. do not recommend her at all.
Learning is completely on your own. Information is provided in the textbook and 4 hour movies. Discussions are graded heavily. Strict criteria.
She is the worst professor I have ever had. I do not know what she looks at when she grades. She should not be a teacher. Genuinely is so terrible and does not respond to her emails or anything. Do not take this class at all. Fire her
This professor was not the best, and I would not recommend taking her! Most of the students for the fall semester dropped out due to her poor grading, and she takes MONTHS! to grade. I was not aware of my grade until the middle of the semester since she lacked grading. She needs to be more transparent too, and is rude about feedback.

Awful! Avoid at all costs. God himself would not be able to get an A. Tons of reading and about 30 hours of videos. Material is interesting but she doesn't care an ounce about her students. Doesn't respond to questions and requests for feedback. Unfair grader. Questions appear on exams that aren't covered until the next module. You've been warned!
Worst professor, do not take. If you do, be prepared to dedicate your entire life and sacrifice sleep, mental health, social life, work, and all other classes. Doesn't teach, assigns endless reading and video assignments and expects you to memorize obscure details. Grading is arbitrary and doesn't give feedback. She shouldn't be teaching.
If you are ready to watch 6 hours of videos and have her not even teach you anything, be my guest.
Incredibly tough grader and wants you to use citations in tests, but doesn't want you to reference materials. Doesn't want your answers to sound like you took it from the textbook, but grades extremely harsh if it sounds like you may have used different materials. DOES NOT WANT YOU TO USE PAST KNOWLEDGE FROM OTHER HIST CLASSES!!!!! Boo :(
Don't take this professor! She is a very tough grader on the essay portion of her exams and offers little to no feedback on where you went right or wrong. I emailed her asking how I could improve my score on the essays in the next exam and she told me that the essays should be as detail-rich as a professors lecture. Expectations set far too high!
don't take history with this teacher if you want to learn and stay away from stress. she is an awful teacher. she grades late and doesn't give feedback. No matter how much details and citations you provide she will find an excuse to lower your grades.
I love a challenge and Ms Pennington certainly provided one. She's a world-class professor and author of several courses. She's brilliant, my only regret was missing a trip to China. Regards and best wishes to you, Sherrill Pennington. Let's share a banana split, sometime.
I had to take two classes with her at COC. I take my education very seriously and had a 4.0 throughout all of college, up until I took her class. She grades hard with little to no feedback. She sets very vague standards for your essay test, "The length of your essay should be about the same as a lecture". Doesnt respond to emails. Worst prof ever!
Hands down the worst professor I ever had. I put my life on hold to do well in this class and still ended up with my first ever B. Her grading is so arbitrary and does not give feedback. Stay away.
Principals matter. I know Miss Pennington from an " extracurricular activity," and after becoming friends with her son, he stated that most of not all positive comments are concocted by Penningtons friends and relatives. Attendence mandatory? Not for her. Inappropriate attire, her lectures are commingled with her outrageous politics, a lot of hate
Unfortunately, history repeats itself. Sad.
Worst professor I've ever had. I took her summer class. I'm a straight-A student and this was my first ever D. It's the professor, not the material; I retook the class with a different prof and got an A+. She doesn't even teach, only makes you watch hour-long videos and you have to remember specific info for the tests, which she grades unfairly.
Terrible professor Takes away points for the smallest things Instructions are not clear for work
Just dropped this class. I've always consistently aced essays, and received my first failing grade from her. Vague directions, she grades late, responds to emails late, and literally does zero actual teaching. Instead, she assigns hours of videos to watch and long chapters to read. If you don't want sleep or a life, take her class! Set up to fail
Definitely do not recommend. Does not provide a rubric for grading, gives extremely low scores and not feedback. Does not provide any lectures for online classes, hours of videos and chapter reading. Definitely stay away, go for another history professor.
dropped this class after half of the semester. worst teacher would not recommend at all. she would give extremely vague comments if there were any. and grades are insanely strict. i dropped this class because I was failing although I'm a 4.0 student. do not take this class. i warned you.
This professor is not really much of a teacher. All she has you do is read and watch long films and answer questions based only on her criteria. She teaches nothing and she grades poorly. Learning actual history is not what you'll get from this class.
I should've read the reviews before going into her class. Shes an awful professor, doesn't have clear or concise grading rubric and changes her own rules from the syllabus as she feels. You only get one chance to have a late assignment. She lives in a ivory tower, doesn't care about you or any student. Just a paycheck professor.
I was taking this professor class for Hist 112, and it was online. I got a good grade on the online test portion. However, when grading essays she gave me zeros which dropped my grade to a F. She gave little to any explanation why I was given that grade. She also give long movies with no explanation or background. Nor does she teach what so ever.
Absolutely terrible. Almost unfair with how strict she grades and no follow up on why you received the grade you did other than little posts about tiny details you missed. Does not care to see you succeed and will not give any extra help or advice on how to pass the class. Avoid!
Awful professor. I am good at history but she made me seem like I was awful at it. So nitpicky and does not care to see you succeed. The epitome of the problem with history education today. It's no longer about learning the history, but reading a bunch of text and then forgetting it once the class is done. How does this progress society at all?
Super hard grader for no reason. This is not an honors class, this is just simple US history. I spent 4 hours working on a paper, did everything she asked and I still got an F. Extremely unreasonable and course layout is extremely confusing. Stay far away if you want to keep your GPA.
Why isn't she fired? Similar to most people here, she ruined my gpa. She doesn't teach and is so picky and her tests are basically memorize trivial details from 3 hour long videos which is so unfair for people who don't have that ability. I heavily regret not dropping the class but I was in 10th and didn't know the college course rules then.
Prof Pennington is an extremely difficult grader. I tried to contact her multiple times & received no luck with additional support. I have gotten all A/Bs on the online exams but Fs on the essay portion. She marks off a lot of points for trivial details, despite no rubric of her expectations. It's unfortunate for students to work hard just to fail.
A student could learn more from AI.
Pennington is a terrible terrible professor. She did not respond to a single email & is the most difficult grader I have ever had. No rubric and no expectations were ever set. She practically hands out fails left and right. Seriously, avoid at all costs. I was a 4.0 student until this class. Pennington needs to go!
assigns MANY films 1/ 2 hours each & chapter reading Does NOT teach by attaching recorded lecture. expects students to memorize ALL aspects of history topics to include small details No use of notes or are allowed during exams given 1hr to write multiple extremely detailed essays for each test. study guides not very helpful
Mrs. Pennington, suffice it to say you're a graduate whose qualifications supersede your current role, and yet you have higher expectations for the plebeian community College Student? I'd suggest a more suitable position for someone of your caliber, or did I overlook something when reviewing your credentials?
Professor Sherrill Pennington, who made learning tough. They graded super harshly on assignments and tests, which felt unfair. Even though they said tests would be based on memory, they expected us to know every tiny detail from the long films and readings. I'd warn others to be ready for a challenging experience if they take a class with her.
I HIGHLY do not recommend this teacher. This class basically sets you up for failure. There is so much reading and you have to watch more than 10 plus videos that are an hour long each. Good luck to those who take this class and not drop.
Worst professor/teacher I have ever had. If you take their class, you'll regret it.
Worst professor I have ever had. If you take her class, you'll regret it.
This has been one of the worst classes I've ever taken. You are expected to memorize all tiny details for FRQs that don't let you use the textbook or videos for. Multiple videos are assigned for each lesson that are over 1 hour. If you expect to pass this class with an A, you are delusional because of her strict grading methods.
worst professor I have taken since coming back to school online. I had to withdraw from her class after battling with her not allowing me to see my incorrect answers on quizzes, memorizing as much as i could for her essay tests (which anyone in her class getting good grades on is using AI and I actually studied) and she failed me! NO teaching @ all
There is a lot of writing involving discussions and essays as well as tests having both multiple choice and written parts. I did not have as bad of time as all these people say, she wasn't a super tough grader and gave good feedback to my assignments.
Average of six hours of documentary material to watch per week, long textbook chapters, frequent quizzes and a test on each module with timed essays. It is not realistic to get an A in without cheating. Most of us are full time students and it is not humanly possible to memorize entire modules of hyper specific information in a few weeks time.
Sherrill Pennington is horrendous, I am disgusted that there are teachers like her in this world. I've never worked so hard in a class for a 60/100 on a book report that has no rubric. Her instructions are short and made for students to fail. Her grading system is all decided by her. On a good day she would reluctantly give you a 70% on essays.
Sherill Pennington is by far the worst teacher I have ever had. She does not reply to emails, gives little guidance, and marks off all credit for little mistakes. She ignores emails from students and provides no assistance. Drop her: you will save so much time, effort, and life. I am so disappointed in her being a teacher of 20+ years at COC.
horrible
By all means, avoid this professor if you want to save your grade. She is an absolutely horrible grader and provides no rubric whatsoever for her assigned papers. I received a failing grade of 55% on a 10-page paper for missing trivial details that were irrelevant nor mentioned in her "expectations". PS, get ready to spend hours watching videos.
She does not have clear exam rubrics and exams are basically impossible to get a good grade on without cheating. She expects you to provide citations for all the information you give in an exam. You have to be very specific and she knocks a lot of points off for not having one detail that isn't even mentioned in the resources she gives you.
absolutely horrible, failed me off one test. dont take again. trust me
VERY tough grader. I have A's in my classes but this one I have a D. Do not recommend this professor.
no matter how hard you try it the quality of ur work be amazing she will automatically give you a low grade my class is currently having a petition for her to be removed because she gives low grades to everybody despite quality of work something is up here dean needs to remove her.
Honest to God my final grade should've been a high B or a Low A given I did well on my final and wrote an A paper but I still somehow got a C... Haha, where did that C come from almost as if she just wanted me to barely pass. Don't do this to yourself. Read every one else's reviews, it sums it up.
You seriously can only pass this class by cheating or using ai/ai humanizers. She gives outlines in the modules for what she expects, but if you're not super detailed she will give you below half credit for your efforts. My class ended up complaining to the Deans. Maybe that fixed my grade? Not sure.
Literally the worst professor ever! I would write at least 20 sentence discussions and i would still end up with a 4 out of 10. She grades harshly and her instructions don't make sense! On the tests she says we are not allowed to use the internet, books, or our notes. But says on the same test we have to source the proper recourses!? Boo teacher!
Easily the worst teacher and class I have ever had. She deserves to have her credentials revoked. She will not respond to emails, and I emailed her several times in a week, only to receive a response to one of them. Her online format is terrible, and you will teach yourself everything. Never take this class or use this professor EVER! 1/10.
Please save yourself. Just don't.
As a history major, Pennington has to be one of the worst professors I've had. All of the papers written for tests have unclear expectations. You can spend the entire amount of time allowed on Canvas writing an essay, and you will still get a low grade. She expects students to remember tiny details and cite them in essays. Truly awful professor.
