She's smart but spends the whole class talking about her kids...gets old fast
Took the telecourse instead of in-class. This was a relatively easy experience.
way too much work
She uses her kids and family as illustrations, but she's smart even though sometimes she also has a hard time staying on the topic. Her phrases (when ON the topic) tend to be very long and include a lot of pauses.
just way too much work. gets off topic a lot.
She's very biast. There are several papers which consist of topics such as religion and cause and effect. Attendance seems important in the long run.
I felt that I was in a religious course rather than humanities course. I realize that humanities has alot to do with religion, but there was so much more in the text book than religious jargon. All supplemental reading was about religion. Not for non-believers of the church doctrin.
I loathed this class. All she did was talk about her personal life, and actually brought 1 of her kids to class once (& she was a brat). My advice- SWITCH PROFESSORS NOW. The readings she chooses make no sense, and sometimes aren't very relevant. In the long-run, I learned maybe 1 thing about philosphophy.
I really liked her. She was great at puting really complicated theories into a perspective that was less frustrating. She was open to well thought out interpretations. She was the best professor I've ever had at acc. I think a lot of people gave her a bad rap because the class was really challenging.
This teacher is very hard. Alot of work and is hard to follow. Lots of papers to write. Humanities
I thought she was a great teacher. The beginning of the semester was a little slow and hard to follow but only because it is difficult to open a mind to philosophy in the beginning. I loved the class, and I thought she was very easy on us. She let us make up for absences and gave us extra credit. She lets students redo papers forever, too!
awful awful awful......do not take this class. it is impossible. she is not very helpful and she does not care about her students grades. she predetermines your grade on the first paper you send in. her syllabus is very unclear.
I took her ethics class, it was very difficult, and I took online which probably didn't help... but if you spend time into writing the papers and understand what you are reading, this class really isn't a problem, you need to have an open mind though. I got an A in this class.
Difficult class, HAVE to do the reading and listen to the lectures. She gives plenty of chances to re-do papers and gives you study questions--Great at analogies and I think overall she was a great teacher-Take her if you aren't lazy..
I took this through DL. The work wasn't too terribly difficult but I had trouble keeping up with the due dates. I think that every unit I completely forgot to finish something. Not hard, just a lot of stuff to keep track of.
Philosophy is a difficult class to begin with, but I Blum makes things pretty easy and easy to understand. She looks a little intimidating at first, but shes very willing to help students and allows many rewrites on the 2 essays. Homework is pretty simple, really no right or wrong answer. Just show up to class and listen to her crazy stories for a A
Blum was a great philosophy teacher. She covered general philosophers from Socrates to Kant. There was a bit of homework, about an hour's worth of study questions per chapter, and about five chapters due on the three test days. She tries very hard to be unbiased and open minded, though discussions were kept pretty on-topic.
I took the online course. It was a lot of reading and you have to send in journals every week and post to the discussion board every week. You also write like seven papers, she grades kind of hard on them. If you have time to dedicate to the class you'll do fine.
Took this course via DL and was my only B out of 4 courses, the rest were A's. Beware if you are trying to maintain a high gpa--do well (perfectly well) on the 4 required papers since grades are pretty much based entirely on the papers. There are no objectives given for the quizzes therefore reading and re-reading all chapters is essential. Beware.
Took distance. Interesting course, but heavy workload. Lots of due dates. Papers had to be perfect. Took the timed quizzes an insane # of times to hit 80% completion mark as I didn't have time to read the huge amount of material. Blum lags towards the end of semester in responsiveness & grading. Don't expect prompt e-mail replies.
I took this DL and enjoyed it, there is a pretty heavy load of reading and 4 or more papers due. I would like to see an example of a written paper along with the requirements the first couple of papers I turned in were not up to her standards. Overall though it ws a good class. I had no trouble in correspondence with her and would recommend her.
Took as a DL course. There is a lot of work involved in this class. 4 papers which are graded very very strictly. I'd put 7 - 8 hours in each paper, following her instructions exactly and still barely made B's on them. She grades hard, the tests are HARD and gives you a lot of work.
Very unprofessional teacher! I took the DL class and when I had questions for her she would not return my phone calls, and only replied to two of five emails that I sent her. She should not be teaching. She grades extremely tough on papers. If you take one of her classes I promise you will regret it.
She was unhelpful and extremely hard. Her standards on your papers are extremely hard and hard to please her. She would rather you to drop the course then help you. Very unprofessional. Do NOT recommend
The DL class is actually pretty simple - no tests just 4 papers, 4 timed quizzes and discussion board busy work. The quizzes were easy - just google the questions and you wont have to read. Teacher is a hard grader on the papers. Don't expect more than a low B or C unless you put a lot effort (A LOT) into the papers; 5 to 6 + pages.
Just started taking her class and reading the syllabus already proves her way under par rating. This class is an elective for most people and she drowns them with work instead of making learning about the art and culture of the past fun and interesting.
The expectations for the papers in this class are what I would expect for someone majoring in Humanities. I was looking forward to this course, but this class was overwhelming and became the class I dreaded. The requirements for the papers were not appropriate for a core class, the professors need to consider the level of the class.
HARD. I'm a straight A student & I don't know if I'm going to end up with an A. The discussions are easy, but the essays are graded SO strictly that it's impossible to get an A. Im beginning to think she refuses to give A's no matter how well you write. Im very disappointed, she seems to grade based on whether she likes your opinion on the subject.
The class is really boring. You have to write 4 papers pertaining to a theme about a particular period of time along with a quiz where you must get at least 80%(mandatory to pass) You also have to post in the forum and discuss 5 readings. The teacher is very inconsistent with grading. I would not recommend this teacher at all.
Took the distance learning class. LOTS of work to do. Can't get an A on an essay no matter what (2300 words and 6 rewrites later - still got a B on it). She does allow multiple rewrites, which is nice. Nice prof. that gets back to you quickly. Two sets of postings a week (total of 12), and a quiz every week. Lots to do for this class.
Am taking this as a DL course. Very confusing reading/assignment schedule. She is a very harsh grader and the course is tough. Shes more concerned with how much work you do than how much you actually take away from the course.
Very hard to understand exactly what she wants. The quizes are very tricky and uses very similar words that seemed to geared to intentionally confuse you. I do not recommend her unless you cannot get into another open slot.
This class is all about writing papers. If you haven't taken english comp. then you WILL NOT PASS MS. BLUMS CLASS. I'm a straight A student and I easily, and I mean no problem passed English comp with an A by a UT Professor. I had to drop Ms Blums Ethics class so that my GPA would not be compromised. She grades by your morals, not by your intellect.
Took her online PHIL 2306 class. Didn't think I'd like Ethics, but I did. She's fair, available to students, interested in her subject, and gives chances to improve grade with rewrites/consults on the 2 major essays. LOTS of writing and you must read book. Weekly discussion/podcasts/blogs, quizzes. I worked very hard but got an A. I recommend her!
Do you actually want to learn ethics? Then this class is for you. Not a cakewalk but very rewarding. Hard work, tough grader, but flexible on due dates and allows rewrites. Quizzes are very specific, but also by the book. Papers cannot be pencil whipped. Participation is a must. Prof is friendly, responsive, always available and very approachable.
The workload for this class was pretty heavy. But she was super helpful and readily available to answer any questions. She allows rewrites on the papers and gives lots of feedback to improve them. She communicated some difficult material very carefully and clearly. Really enjoyed the class!
This class was very difficult for me. The professor is a strict grader, and her mandatory essays are so heavily weighted. Its difficult to get an A in this class. She isn't very specific concerning the essays but she expects them to be outstanding. I would probably say that they should be English comp standards. I do not recommend this teacher!
Yes, this class is time consuming and not the easiest, but professor Blum is great. I am an international student and reading in English isn't easy, therefore I needed more time (I'm assuming) then native students. Make sure you select your time for reading and writing blogs and you will do fine. I got an A. Dr. Blum is very professional, helpful
Tough course, but great feedback. Your allowed to retake quizzes and thank goodness for that. If you complete your assignments on time you should have no problem doing well in the class. The Professor was very helpful and responsive.
This class was really fun for me to take. Professor Blum has a lot of knowledge on this topic and it was great to learn from her. A lot of times though it seemed like what she was talking about had nothing to do with the reading... but just do the reading assginments and show up to class and pay attention during the lecture and you will do fine.
Tought professor. I'm an A student, but I'll be happy if I get "C" in her class. I might drop this class.
TOUGH GRADER. Attendance is not required. The tests are unpredictable and the majority of your points come from essays on your tests. Sherry really is a nice lady though. She's very smart and well educated on this topic. It's just a lot of studying and work for such a lower college level.
TESTS ARE TOUGH. I repeat, TESTS ARE TOUGH. Her test cover several chapters of material and usually only have about 6-8 questions on them. The test is mainly essay form and it is quite easy to receive a terrible grade. Tests are the only grade you receive. Attendance is not necessary, she babbles in class anyway. Awful class.
She isn't very helpful, VERY tough grader on essays. I got an F on my essay because I didn't put the page number on the quote I used. I took her online class so there were no test just 2 essays, and 5 blogs with a quiz due almost every Sunday. NOT an easy A class.
I took this class online fall 2015. This class was very challenging but it gives you a different perspective on life. I enjoyed taking this class even though some of the reading material was a bit difficult to understand. The professor replied to all of my emails and clarified any concerns I had. She gives you opportunities to revise your essays.
I took the 16 week online course and it was challenging; I never thought it would end. There aren't tests but there are quizzes after each chapter on Blackboard, and there are two essays. She grades the essays extremely hard but you have the chance of rewriting your paper for a higher grade.
Tests are extremely tough. To the point that they are just not understandable. I took some over and barely scored higher. I knew the material as well. Several students said my work helped them to understand. She's willing to give hints on how to do better. I'm an A student and I struggled with her tests.
Professor Blum is nice but she is tough! I took the online class and it required a ton of reading and writing blogs, as expected. However, the material was challenging and often times hard to understand. The tests are even more difficult and the wording was often misleading. She allows 3 attempts at each of the 5 tests. Good luck!
Blum's class is super easy. The key to success for this course is to do the review before each exam and do the blackboard assignments, it really shouldn't give you much difficulty if you put in the effort to understand the material
I took the online course and it was difficult in part due to my not having been in school for a few years before taking the course. Though it was great educational content, but it was not an easy read and was difficult to understand at times. I only contacted my professor via email and she was very responsive to my inquires.
This class was difficult. Not only is the subject matter tricky, requiring reading everything multiple times, the podcast lectures were terrible. The sound quality was poor, and she was clearly reading from hastily written notes. The test questions didn't make a lot of sense sometimes. She clearly didn't have much time to spend on this class...
I had Mrs. Blum for Intro to College course and she grades TOUGH! She made too many papers, projects, and tests/quizzes in this class, and each class was about the philosophy of everything. I wonder what would happen if she would actually take this class lighter given the fact that it's INTRO to college...
I took Prof Blum for the EDUC1300 class and it was a breeze. She's a philosophy teacher so she gets off on tangents sometimes but it was easy. Just do what she says to and you'll pass. 4 tests, 1 paper, 1 presentation. Lots of extra credit and gives extra credit if you don't miss a day of class.
Professor Blum was an average professor. She tends to get off on rabbit trails during the lectures but generally the stuff she has to say is interesting nevertheless. Interestingly enough, this was probably one of the harder classes I've taken at ACC, for some odd reason. Make sure to take advantage of any and all extra credit opportunities.
lots of reading each week, 6 DB & responses every other week from readings, 5 quizzes (can be taken up to 3x each), 1 essay that can be revised as much as needed to get letter grade you want. (she grades tough). She gives you enough time to get the heavy workload completed on time. Responds to emails at a decent rate. She made ethics interesting
Terrible about responding to emails & bad about putting grades in!
Professor Blum is a really interactive lecturer; if you're not one to volunteer yourself in a discussion, you probably won't enjoy this (or any) philosophy class. She is pretty scattered when she lectures, but she explains things very well if you ask the right questions for what you're confused on. I get along with her well, highly recommend!
If you email her or try to contact her, don't plan on a fast response time, or even a response AT ALL!
I would take her again in a heartbeat! Be prepared to read A LOT and save some time after each reading to write a short summary about the material! It is important material as it gives you scenarios that actually happen in the real world. It'll make you think. She is super easy to chat with and a very friendly instructor!
She is a bit confusing organizationally at the beginning of the semester but the class becomes a routine after the first couple of weeks. Interesting discussions every day, just make sure you read the material! I loved this class.
No matter how hard you work for your paper, do not expect an easy A from her. She is a very tough grader. The amount of work for this class is pretty heavy! I will never take her again.
Very easy class. The quizzes can be found online. The easy can be a bit hard. I had to rewriting twice for a B but she works with if you just communicate with her.
She is super nice and does a great job of engaging her classes. But she is a very tough grader, i lost a question on an exam because i left out three words that she was apparently looking for. TONS of reading and it is confusing and she does assign lots of homework so stay on top of everything or you will quickly fall behind.
PHIL 1301 was probably one of the most challenging classes I have ever taken. I recommend that you AT LEAST take Comp 1 before this, as there is a lot of writing. However, considering how challenging the class was, I STRONGLY recommend taking it with Dr. Blum, as she does a fantastic job of explaining the concepts and is always willing to help!
Good online class
I took her online class and it was fairly easy. It does requires a lot of reading and a lot of your time to get the work done. Not a class you should take if you are a procrastinator. I could have gotten an A no problem but I am a big procrastinator.
I can't say I would recommend her or at least this class online. There is a TON of writing. There are also quizzes for each unit that she says you'll do well on if you do well on the practice quizzes. I have not found that to be the case. A lot of the questions seem arbitrary rather than a test of comprehension. She's doesn't respond or is slow
Lots of HEAVY Reading, frequent homework & 1 essay. Tests are 10ish short answer and 3 mini essays. Pay attention when she compares philosophers and what they may argue on the same topic. Class offers supplemental instruction and office hrs. If you did not read an assignment, DON'T skip class!! Youtube vids also helped. (part 1/2)
Course becomes challenging when you reach metaphysics unit. She is accessible & is willing to help explain concepts outside of class. she may post 4 questions days before a test and choose 3 for the test, these will be the mini-essays so write ahead. You will be reading English that is not commonly used & may have trouble understanding them. pt.2/2
This professor is very difficulty to get feedback from via email or phone. The essay is graded so tough that it takes so many revisions to even be eligible to submit your final draft. The quizzes are difficult, but you get multiple attempts. Very relaxed grader on blog posts. She seems so busy that she can't keep up with communication.
Distance Learning Course. You will read 31 Ethic-based readings (Aristotle, Kant, O'Neil) and write a 200-word "blog post" responding to each reading. Five Unit Quizzes based on readings. 1 Essay that is suggested 1500-2000 words. Your entire grade in the class is based off of your essay grade. VERY Work heavy. Delayed grading. Not much feedback.
Provides helpful podcasts to help explain chapters. Quizs are not horrible but the amount of reading and blogs should weigh in more for grade. Blogs are to be 200words with three responses for each for about 36 chapters. I feel as though she is not fair for having one essay weigh soo much on actual grade. She seems well organized with available
Phil. 2306 course on content alone was not a difficult course but the tests had many intrinsic flaws such as multiple choice questions that have two answers with the same text and incomprehensibly ambiguous questions. This made for a HARD A. Sherry also left over half my emails unanswered. Our grades are important to us, please take that srsly
Blogs are time consuming and awfully graded. Doesnt respond to emails, ever! Quizzes are graded incorrectly and you do not get to see what questions you got wrong. Awful professor, stay away
So I was really skeptical to choose this professor due to the poor ratings but she was better than the other ratings I saw. I took the 8week online class in the summer . Its a lot of work but every time I texted her she texted me back. Make sure to connect with her, text, go see a tutor at HLC. Shell see your effort & consider it. Put in Effort!
Go to class, participate in discussion, do the assignments, and you'll have an easy A. If you have an issue, talk to her. She's very caring and interested in helping you succeed. She's also a great professor to keep in touch with if you ever need help or advice.
She was hard to get a hold of, and she's not the easiest grader. Tons of homework and her instructions were vague.
She is the worst, tough grader, gave a lot of discussion posts that takes all your day but not graded , if you don't do it she take of points, only 4 tests and if you do your best, you get like 10 of 25 , which leads you to the first C of your life.
This is by far the worst online class that I have taken. SAVE YOURSELF THE TIME NOW AND PICK ANOTHER PROFESSOR. She is not accessible and takes FOREVER to return grades. She has ridiculous amounts of discussion boards that are not graded but count against you if you dont do them. I still dont know what I got on our final (grades are due tonight)
*Taken during COVID-19* Dr. Blum is a solid professor. She is very smart and explains things well. There is a TON of reading to do, and you have to make comments on each reading online. The tests are hard, but if you study you should be fine. She is a tough grader, but she helps u study. Discussions are engaging. I ended w an A, but I worked HARD.
SAVE YOUR GPA don't take her , very tough grader , late , lazy , we received our grades at the last moment we even couldn't drop, it's too late.
Tough greader, lots of reading and discussion posts for nothing . No answer for emails no return grades on time. don't take her.
Look, everyone grumbles about Ethics because it is a ton of reading and writing. That's just the nature of it, so you can dismiss the bitter reviews of Blum because those folks would be just as cranky after tying out different professor. Blum is fair, well-organized, there is no dodging the heavy workload but you will learn a lot.
Be ready to do a lot of reading and a lot of tedious work. Soooo many discussion posts. But she went above and beyond for students during a pandemic with flexibility and understanding. The tedious work also makes writing papers easier.
Class was hard for me. Professor Blum has always responded to emails and answered questions I had. The class I took was entirely online, Discussion board posts required but expectations made clear by a thorough syllabus. Was understanding when it came to changes that arose during covid. Worked my tail off and did my best, Got an A. Thanks Prof. B.
Prof. Blum is caring and considerate. But her system is confusing, the class does not interest me at all, it is an easy class but the system made it difficult. I felt I just wasted my money and time taking this class. I suggest, better take American History class than any of Ethics or Philosophy class.
I am little late on rating Dr. Blum, I took Ancient Greek Philosophy with her. Our class was small in portion but we had the best discussions and I enjoyed her teaching style for that class. (Although some discussions were not on track) Dr. Blum wants you to learn, so she will give you every chance to do that if you work with her!
professor is sweet and understanding but her class styles sucks. All you do is read your textbook and write three essays and do weekly journals. towards the end of class she emailed in late October and that's the last time my class had heard from her the rest of the course. Lacks communications skills and makes mistakes in grade book.
The only reason I wouldn't take this course again is because of the content, she based this class on race and inequality. The material was pretty self explanatory and every other week was the same assignments so there was no confusion. LOTS of reading and ethics is a difficult subject to read, but she warned us of that.
This course has a lot of writing involved. Very clear grading criteria. Professor was easily assessible and responded quickly. It was a lot of reading. Not a hard course if you enjoy Ethics.
You are expected to teach YOURSELF the material from the book. All she does is answer questions about the LOADS of homework (drawn directly from the textbook), which are hard to formulate if you've never been taught the material. Egotistical, pompous, and hard-headed. If you want to learn, do yourself a favor and avoid Blum at all costs.
There's three due dates throughout each week. Her grading rubric is confusing. The only way to get an A on an assignment is to schedule a phone appointment afterwards and make revisions. The worst thing about this class is the only moral issue you will discuss is race, and she doesn't give us enough material to make even that interesting.
Abandon all hope, ye who enter here. Took this intro to logic course and will retain absolutely nothing. No teaching involved, just "answering HW questions," yet the HW is due before class--she wants you to "struggle through it." Expects you to teach yourself via textbook. New material up to the day of the final exam. Unforgiving and unhelpful.
Blum is amazing! I got COVID and she gave me an extension on our final project. Only 1 paper/project, which wasn't that demanding. She lets you to redo assignments if you make phone appointments with her and there are class meetings for discussion. Only thing, her grading criteria is a little confusing, but she is happy to clarify! Take her class.
Very confusing grading and structure to the course. Feedback was minimal but she does provide the opportunity to make revisions which is nice. Grades were given 1-2 weeks after submission of assignments.
Unhelpful when giving feedback, stating that whatever the criteria said was what we had to do, even if said criteria contradicted what she said in class. We had a substitute for one class day, and I received better feedback from her in that one class period than I had from Blum in the entire semester.
She told us to complete a final project in which we chose something that wasn't in the textbook. The instructions said the textbook had to be part of our bibliography anyway. She wanted us to choose a modern topic that wasn't in the textbook, then asked us to cite evidence from the textbook.
I highly recommend this professor! She cares for each of her students and undoubtedly wants us to succeed. Overall, she did assign a lot of homework, but she always goes over whatever a student is struggling with in class and is available basically every day for office hours. Do the homework, ask questions, and you will succeed in her class!
Do not take this teacher. I would say take this teacher if you actually want deep knowledge on philosphy but no. She makes assigments SO TEDIOUS ITS RIDICULOUS. This professor cares way too much about discussion posts and things like that, that you don't even get a good grasp of philosophy. This is just a really hard class unless your just cheating
Professor Blum is a caring professor & she makes herself available outside of class, I like that she let's us re-test, the test is online & it is timed so make sure you study, it is open notes but do NOT relay on the notes. Make sure you study outside of class because this is a textbook dependent class, there is a lot of homework make sure to do it
This class was extremely difficult and the textbook did not explain the material well enough, the good thing about Professor Blum was she makes herself available outside of class and she answers and explains homework questions thoroughly. This class is homework heavy but professor Blum is caring and does let you re-take the test if you need to.
Sherry Blum was a great teacher to have! There is a bit of reading to do, but she always followed through and helped answer questions along the way. The class environment was very comfortable and she encouraged the collaboration with students and I made a few friends along the way. She was very responsive through email was and overall a great class
Professor Blum is super nice and helpful! Grades are based mostly on bi-weekly discussion board posts and journal entries. The readings are heavy and tough to grasp, but that is the same with any ethics course. The hardest part of this course is the essays. Be prepared to write 5+ pages!! She allows for revisions on the essays and works with you.
Save your time and DO NOT take her! Lectures just consist of her popping out the textbook and rephrasing what it says. HW is very tedious. She puts in grades very late so you don't even know what your real grade is.I was stressing out about whether or not I should withdraw but it was too late by then even after emailing her and she responded late
She won't teach anything. My class was asynchronous. She didn't teach or explain any ethical theories or concepts in her videos. Her videos only showed where you can find the resources you must read for yourself. Then have multiple discussions with other students about the content. Also, be prepared to write ALOT. My midterm paper was 16 pages long
Lots of homework and lengthy midterms/finals but she is a very sweet professor! She will help you with any questions or concerns. She really cares about her students. There are weekly sessions you can attend if you are struggling too. She is a pretty easy grader but if you cheat or use AI she will give you a zero. I would take this class again!
Took an 8 week online course and while the workload was a lot and lots of discussion boards and reading...proefessor really cares about her students. As long as you do the work you will pass. Also if anything personal comes up that blocks a due date just speak with her and she will extend deadline usually.
Prof Blum is nice/communicative & I like that she encourages a casual writing style for assignments, but there are no lectures to help you understand the material which made the course harder than it needed to be - Be ready for LOTS of discussion posts that become redundant. She is a slow grader which was stressful towards the end of the semester.
Professor Blum's PHIL2306 class is heavy on reading and writing, but she's willing to work with you. The grading can be confusing, but using unstuck AI alongside the textbook really helped me stay on top of it.
Sherry teaches in a way that forces you to reflect a lot in your own morals. If you are looking for a class that forces this uncomfortable conversation, this class is perfect. Expect 4 major essays and plenty of philosophical readings for you to analyze with your own moral approach. ATTEND SI SESSIONS. Maddie is awesome if you get her.
She is a very sweet professor. However, the content of her course can be very confusing as there was little to other resources for you to look at other and the reading she gave you. A lot, I mean A LOT of paper and discussion posts need to be done. Also her grading rubric can be very confusing as well. Personally, I wouldn't take her class again.
The workload and deadlines are unreasonable for an introductory course. Each chapter is broken into sections (1.1, etc.), and for every section, you must answer 5+ questions in parts A–D, adding up to 80+ questions per chapter, plus McGraw-Hill hw and quizzes. All assignments are due at 12 PM (noon) instead of 11:59 PM, and you can't work ahead.
Unreasonably hard and high workload for an intro course. She curves her sections so that you only need a 40% to pass, so she knows that she is needlessly difficult. She's impossible to reach, insisting that students text her instead of email and then it's a gamble on if she will even respond to your text. Be wary.
