Really interesting lecturer, she is so funny
She is absolutely the best, enthusiastic, warm, and approachable
the best prof I've ever had, such a great person

she is the groovy-est of the gurus
Very wise, entertaining and funny. I really enjoy her thought-provoking lectures.
Sherry Rowley is one of the few prof's that has a vested interest and enthusiasm in what she is teaching. She is open minded and well worthy of a tenured position. I wish there were more prof's like her.
one of the best teachers i every had.
I love this prof. She's the best I've had. her lectures are interesting and she's a fun person.

Wow, what an excellent teacher. She is extremely nice, understanding, and open minded. She is one of the few teachers that really cares about her students. She's radical!
Though I'm only a first year I can see very clearly that Sherry possesses that little something that makes a teacher special. I love fantasy and topograhpy, it's the only class I don't skip.
Awesome course and really awesome prof to teach it. Sherry rocks!
a wonderful professor and t.a. very knowledgeable and approachable. although i must say i never know what to expect out of her when she's marking papers.. an interesting courses nonetheless.
She's ok. but she is confusing. She thinks on a different level. Too weird in some sense but can be cool.
This class is crazy. I would never recommend it to anyone if their life depended on it. There is no direction and the exam will kill you. Make sure that you copy down all the quotes and know all the images or you will die. This is the worst class.
Sherry truly loves teaching and it shows. She taught us how to think, and to question things in life that we take as given. Very open forum tutorials. Great range of materials covered in class, relevant to everyday life.Easy to talk to.
A great lecturer. Sometimes talks too fast. She has really interesting ideas and adds her own POVs.
this was close to the best course i could imagine, and the bulk of that was due to sherry. she was an amazing lecturer, and did a lot to make herself approachable...if not for her, i don't think people would have made that 8:30 lecture.
Fun Tutorials!
This course was *AMAZING*. I must recommend it to all. Great material, outstanding prof, very thought-provoking. Wonderful. Can't speak highly enough of it. And I got an A. The only drawback is the 8:30 lecture :(
Amazing prof and course! No doubt one of the most thought-provoking and interesting professors of my time at York. This is a course of her own design, so she is perfectly suited to teaching it, and is very absorbed in the subject matter. RECOMMENDED!
Amazing prof. This class is the best class I've ever taken in my life. very thought provoking. You'll learn alot about yourself. Made me look at life and the world in a different way. Love sherry, she is the most interesting and intelligent human being I've ever met.
Great professor: funny, sincere, interested in provoking discussion among students as opposed to telling you what she thinks. This course's material has stuck with me and influenced how I view everything else. Highly recommended!!!!!
Amazing tutorials, thought provoking and Sherry makes the class enjoyable, definately worth taking.
i think sherry is hot
Sherry is by far the best prof I've had to date. She actually cares about the students shes teaching, and the material that she teaches. I emplore anyone on the cusp of taking one of her courses...DO IT, you won't regret it. (I had her for Fantasy and Topographies..)
Lets face it, Sherry is a Hippie, and a really cool person, but this course lacks any real substance. Its more about your feelings towards certain issues than learing usful facts which would help you along in life. Tutorials are filled with people who ramble on about their ideas on nothing. Year long jornal was a waste of time.
great great great!
Best class i've taken so far, HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!!
great prof wish i could have had more classes with her
Wow amazing prof, class changed my life, made me see the world more vividly

awesome teacher.. shes hilarious
I love this teacher!
Amazing!
Stupid assignments. They're all the same. The course theme is ridiculous. Alternate fantasy cannot exist, by thinking it, it becomes part of the dominant.
I personally didn't like the course i took with her. it was boring and that was probably why i didn't go to many lectures. but tutorials were amazing. I had sherry as my tutorial leader. she was the best tutorial leader i've had this year. she's hillarious and understanding. overall she cares about her students which is a rare trait among teachers
Sherry is one of the best prof's I've ever had! The lectures were pretty okay but if you're taking her class you MUST attend tutorials. You get most of the info from them, especially if Sherry's your TA. Tutorials were DEFINITELY fun and she makes you feel really comfortable. If you are taking any of her classes, try to get her as your TA!
She's one of the most brilliant people you'll ever talk to. She really tries to have her students see past the world around them, and think in an abstract sense. She isn't the easiest marker (especially on essays) but if you put a serious effort in, she really appreciates it, and your marks will reflect it. It's also great that she's the TA.
She's a very smart and abstract-thinking professor. But the course lectures were too abstract for me and she gave many many pointless examples. Therefore, I skipped many lectures but went to every tutorial. They are the most important part and make sure you make good notes when you go
Unlike some of the other comments, I think it is important that u go 2 Sherry's lectures because it's easier 2 participate in tutorial if u know what went on in lecture! Trust me she is right when she says to start ur portfolio in Sept, the weekend b4 it was due I wrote 52000 words! Sherry makes u think about things that u may never think of urself
My criticism is that there are a LOT of instructions/guidlines in the syllabus. it would've been nice if it was condensed. but Sheryl is a good teacher and encourages individuality and boldness. she wants students to believe in their beliefs & EXPRESS THEM in tutorial & in the journal. its only the beginning. still 7 more months!
Amazing prof, I loved her class and her way of thinking, I would look forward to her tutorials.
Amazing prof. Material can be difficult and sometimes her lectures are missing that UMPH but she makes sure the material is interesting and she is so approachable, kind, and knows what she's talking about. Great prof, inspires you. Hard to get more than a B (her TAs suck) but she's great.
Probably one of the most interesting and innovative professors that I had ever had. I took her course in 2005. She left quite an impression on me. She makes you think in a different way and it sticks with you. I highly recommend this course.
Sherry is by far the best prof at York, and her lectures made my first year interesting and exciting. Also, John Reed is an amazing T.A. :)
One of the most demanding courses that I have taken to date, but at the end of the day, I came from the course better prepared to take on anything that would be thrown at me at York. The readings themselves were boring at times, but it was what Sherry was able to have us explore and discover in these readings that made them that much more interesti
She gives long lectures which I was not used to since it was at 8:30 AM. She has a different way of looking at things which I admit, will make you question. But this course is not easy. It's demanding with a lot of small assignments and a big portfolio at the end. This class required a lot of reading not only the course kit but other books too!
there is no doubt that she is an amazing prof. but the course is very unfair in the first semester they only cover 25 % of the course and in the 2nd semester they pile you up with so much work almost every week there is a big assignment due in the 2nd semester. if you are not good at writing essays this course isnt for you cuz you could get C
Sherry is really nice and funny. If you have her as a t.a you really have to work hard on the assignments because she does mark a little bit tough. The lectures are important to attend because she uses visual aids that show up on the exam. Make sure you do all the readings because the final exam is based on the readings.
Sherry should stick with first year courses. Class is a waste of time. Extremely expensive course kit with poor choice of reading material. I am completely disappointed with this course.
She has no appreciation of the fact that students are eager to see how they have done in their assignments. She takes her sweet time with marking assignments. This course is not worth your money - don't take it if you have a choice.
AWFUL.
Not much learning in this course. Instead you will be bugged down with absolutely redundant assignments. She doesn't have much to offer but is a very hard marker and her expectations from student is surmountable. I regret taking this course and do not recommend it to anyone.
Sherry is a really good Professor and T.A. and you sure do learn a lot of interesting things in the course. But the course load is absolutely nuts. You write nearly 100 pages worth of formal/informal work and it is insane, especially when people are taking full 30 credit course loads. They need to take out some work in this course.
In all my fourth year courses, this is the worse. Not only there is little to learn in this course but also it takes up your time from doing work for your other courses. Contrary to its title, this course tries to assimilate students into the mainstream pop culture. don't take it, you will learn nothing substantial--no theories or useful reading.
There isn't much to learn in this class, however, expectations are too high. The course concepts are still ambiguous and not concretely defined, thus it is difficult to see the point in the assignments and write them correctly. She is a nice lady though, and tries to clarify as much as possible. The class itself is pointless though.
I wonder who designed this nonsense course. A genius once said: "Sometimes one pays most for the things one gets for nothing." What we are getting in this course can be easily attained by flipping through useless programs on television channels.
She'll have you drag on each assignment to the point of absolute frustration. Communication is an alien concept in this course. Apparently she dislikes email and since there is no moodle page, then you are basically on your own. Everything about this course is backward and frustrating.
A poor quality course in every respect.
I do not recommend this course to any one.
Sherry is the most wonderful teacher I have met at York. Her course readings may be onerous but are usually not too academic to understand always brilliant & woven together with interesting themes.Discusion is always great.I read things in this course that led to pleasure reading & which I still love.Projects are creative(not only essays).
You would not learn much in this class. A waste of time all around.
Sherry is a very sweet professor.. She offers numerous clarifications and her assignment outlines are very detailed . The readings in her course are very overwhelming and require a weekly response. Very kind lady but extremely hard marker!!
Attending her class is 100% mandatory & reading articles assigned if you want to survive her 10 response papers and an absolutely dreadful portfolio where you literally write 80+ pages worth of essays & reflections. Her obsession with course themes & critical skills are horrible too. (on the plus, no final exam) However, very sweet lady
You must complete all the assigned readings to understand what she talks about during lectures and tutorial. If you get her as your tutorial leader, good luck! She marks hard on both her assignments and tests/exams. If you want a B in her course, you must go above and beyond, an A is almost impossible, you must dedicate your life to your work/exam.
awful class. the course wasn't managed by the right instructor or it could've been much better. she takes everything personally. no level-appropriate-knowledge sharing. class is a waste of time. grading is solely based on whether she personally likes you or not. oh, she also grades your citation instead of your ideas and writing skills.
Sherry is one of the most interesting people out there. She is so relaxed but SO passionate. Yes this course is loaded but the material is very different and compelling. Get your work done on time/listen to what she wants in the assignments and you will do well. Portfolio is killer but pretty easy, just time consuming. Good luck
Sherry is an incredibly passionate professor. Her class is early in the morning, but she makes you want to wake up and attend her lectures. Skilled speaker and very clear with how she wants her assignments done. As long as you do your readings, it's not hard to get an A.
The portfolio will ruin your life. Worst class I ever took at york.
a useless class and unqualified teacher. do not take her class at all or you will regret it
What can be expected from an institution that is too keen to collect students' money and least interested in giving back what students pay for? Extremely disappointed with the quality of this class. I hope the Humanities department takes the time to read these comments. CUPE should also be held responsible for protecting unqualified teachers.
Sherry is such a kind soul and so passionate. Loved this class but the portfolio is killer. Stay on top of your work and you will do fine. Eye opening concepts and great application to every day life. I had her as a TA and she was awesome
simply awful -- i do not recommend this instructor. The course on the other hand could have been a lot better if it were handled by a qualified teacher. This course feels like a community college course not a university level course. Also if she doesnt like you, you are done for.
if you do end up in this class, the best course of action is to try not to say anything intelligent in class and also dumb down your writings, or you'll receive a punitive grade for making her insecure about herself. it is indeed sad.
She led this course so well and forever changed my perspective of the world. That being said it isn't light in the workload area, but if you keep up and don't leave it all until the end you'll be fine.
so glad it's over -- this was an outmost disappointment. dont take course with this instructor.
Eye-opening discussion. I felt so comfortable in my tutorial with Sherry. Encourages students to share views on subject matter. If you can manage homework & get your point across in a paper, you'll be fine. 1/2 the ppl in my class dropped out & most of the remainder struggled with the workload.Don't let that frighten you, & always ask for help.
Has the most monotonous way of teaching AKA straight talking with little visuals to support the content or help you follow along. Tends to talk in circles. Course might be more interesting if someone else was teaching it. It's the type of topic that needs to be brought to life and she's too deadpan.
For a first year class it was pretty difficult. Tons and tons of readings and she would lecture on and on and I would never know what was important information. There was ONE assignment in the whole class which was a portfolio. SO much work. Dion was a good TA. He actually helped me a lot with my critical analysis and made me a better writer
Sherry gave incredibly insightful lectures that really expanded how I thought about the world. Had her as my TA as well and she provided a lot of helpful material to assist with assignments and was very considerate. An excellent course to prepare students for the university experience. If you keep up with readings and do the work, you'll succeed.
Great professor and outlandish course. What is even more outlandish though, is the biggest writing assignment you will ever have too write in your life, which replaces the mid term and final exams. Easily 60+ pages just to get a B and there is a lot, I repeat, a lot of reading in this course
Most boring class I have taken so far. Best part of of the class was when I fell asleep, which was not so difficult to do because she is the most boring and monotone-voiced prof in the world. Projects pile up at the end if you do not do them in advance. Get ready for a 80-90 page final project, while working on a group project at the same time.
As a first year, I dreaded this class the most in terms of work and going to tutorials. I was overwhelmed by the amount of readings (some were hard) but I will never regret taking this course. It opened my mind and I would recommend it to anyone, however she grades hard. The final assignment was the worse expect 70+ pages. She posted lectures onlin
very nice, open-minded, allows you to work for your argument, hard marker, very detailed about work , aside from being a hard marker, she is great in lecture, very inspirational, funny and willing to help. no exam, but large project
Most inconsistent professor ever at York University. Do not take her class. You will regret it. Very poor grading criteria.
This class was interesting and made me think about storytelling in so many new ways. Sherry was a good prof too. She's a bit of a tough marker and the assignments are big but she's willing to work with you to develop your ideas and will give you resources that are relevant to whatever you choose to do your project on. She's super nice too.
Amazing professor!
This is not a teacher. She is an ideologue and dictator. In this course, you are not allowed to say "reality" and "love." Be prepared to become a passive consumer of her ideology about dominant fantasies. Don't dare to say "LOVE." LOVE is forbidden. REALITY doesn't exist. So, use your judgement, my fellow students.
HORRIBLE CLASS. DO NOT TAKE. I regret thinking I could push through this course, it's so unorganized and all over the place and the workload is more than any course I've taken.
Lots of reading and essay writing, 70 page portfolio due at the end of the term. You will basically be writing essays every week. If you like reading and writing then take this course.
The course content is just Sherry's ideologies that you are forced to follow by. A lot of reading and writing, no tests or exam for the course. Every week there is something due, and the assignments are weighed a lot and it is a lot of extra unnecessary work. I do not recommend for those who do not like writing essays. Horrible course
the subject is super tough and the rudeness of the prof. makes it more difficult. moreover even the ta is not at all efficient in teaching. its very heavy on assignments, it will take u one semester to actually understand the pattern of the papers. the prof as well as the ta are not at all supportive, so be ready to do a lot of work on ur own.
Anyone considering taking a course in her course don't. She is the hardest marker ever, I have never received such low grades in my life. She has so many assignments, you will have something due every two weeks and they are 9-10 page essays each time. Work Prof ever, DO NOT take her class
not a good experience.
I am writing this to warn everyone who is looking on this website. Do not take her class. Even if the class sounds interesting, you will be doing 8-10 page essays every two weeks (not an exaggeration) and her marking is very hard. rude comments. I am an English major and I was getting the lowest marks on essays I have ever gotten. Just don't
I can only imagine how much more difficult the course might have been in-person. Assignment outlines are so vague, weekly 2-3 double spaced response papers to weekly lecture, and It honestly feels like I have to pry for whats the message she's trying to teach every week in lecture. Fantasy and Topographies of the west is confusing as its name.
Professor rowley is the least professional professor I have ever read. She is rude and grades based on how well she likes you after the first two classes. She is a very hard marker off of no concrete rubric. Her guidelines arent clear and she does not help by clarifying anything. Her notes on our work are illegible and personally attack students
The absolute most unnecessarily convoluted course I have ever taken. The course is confusing from day one and lectures are a bore and see reason-less. The final is a 70-page portfolio where you're regurgitating absolute nonsense for the entirety of it just to inflate her ego. Stay away from this course it is unreasonable.
HUMA 3815: I found Sherry to be a great prof compared to the other reviews she's gotten. You gotta go to lecture every week, but participation isn't hard bc of the response papers we need to do almost every week. TOUGH GRADER! But if you follow her feedback, you'll do well. If you don't start the projects beforehand: you. will. fail. Good luck
Sherry is an amazing prof! There are just too many readings.
STAY AWAY FROM HUMA1625.... There's too much writing and work for a 9-credit class... There's pre-recorded and there were like 5 each week and it took like 3 hours of watching.. content is super dry... the readings were easy. when I was in this class the syllabus warned us that it was unachievable to receive a B+ or an A for the final assignment.
Prof was very messy in terms of outline. She was very rude when you did not say what she wanted to hear. Often ridiculed students for not answering in class. Very political when the class should not have been.
Boring, subjective material, she acts like her course is the only one your'e taking. Going to finish the course but it's overcomplicated, and assignment instructions are too vague. This course is painful. My TA is the only reason I'm doing decent. The assignments are repetitive adding to the boringness. Lots of HW during W break to stay caught up.
tough marker, too many readings, rubric is unclear.
Worst class I have taken in my 4 years @ York. Course is listed as in-person but all lectures are online. No clear rubric/examples for any assignments, you have to guess expectations. No grades given throughout the year-long course. Ridiculous amount of content to consume even for a 9 credit course. Extremely unfair organization and grading. AVOID!
I wish I had never enrolled. Sherry seems nice but this course makes no sense for a 1000-level it should be a 3000. TAs are sarcastic and rude and Sherry never gives a clear answer for anything. we were told the final assignment average is a C but not ever shown how to do better than that. why do you want your class avg to suck? feels condescending
Because of the strike I was able to drop out of this course pretty late so I do feel like I wasted time but you don't get any solid grades until the end of the course even though it goes through fall and winter? How is this allowed? Students should be allowed to know where they stand but its justified by some BS like everything else in this course
I have not experienced a course and a prof that is this self-inflated. if you ask a question be prepared for paragraphs of nothing in response. and yeah, it is almost all online besides a tutorial in person and this is not clarified when you enroll. This was such a waste of time and I still dont even know my grade because final assignment = 70pgs
the structure of this convoluted and terrible for a first year level course.. you are left to figure out so much on your own but how can you without a foundation...? plus the TA was rude and constantly annoyed with us for not understanding things
This is the worst course in the humanities department
Do not take this class if you like your mental health! Too many expectations, terrible for 1st year students. the work load is crazy. 75 page essay, with weekly response papers. Terrible marking as she never gave specific feedback on our work. have to read one whole book every week and write about it, walking into to the hallway gives me PTSD.
Thought it would be fun but she makes you hate women's rituals after the first few classes. Too many readings and videos that are around an hour that she expects you to finish per week. Instructions are so vague and she just reiterates syllabus when you ask for more details. do not take ANY of her classes under ANY circumstances! will be a pain!
This course is a nightmare. Poorly organized with unclear expectations and unhelpful TAs. The sheer volume of content is ridiculous even for a 9-credit class. Thankfully, Unstuck ai helped me prepare for the assignments, but I still ended up dropping the course.
do not let those 50 positive reviews fool you. she is a terrible professor who does not take any feedback. she is not accommodating or understanding of students' personal issues and is very strict on deadlines. she is unclear on instructions and claims to expand but just circles around what you already know. do not take her classes.
