Very Hard Marker and does not give clear feedback. Very Picky for APA style
really not a nice woman. she takes kindergarten way too seriously, and ive never done so badly on a stupid annotated bibliography. GET A GRIP LADY!
outstanding teacher- fair and helpful in every way. Feedback is professional. Best course as it was the most practical.
SUPERB TEACHER- ALWAYS RESPONDED TO EMAILS AND GAVE HELP WHEN ASKED. IF YOU WORKED IT PAID OFF- BEST CLASS CUZ IT WAS SO PRACTICAL.
superb teacher- fair and gives a course that you can use in the future. always provides feedback.
Took 2 classes with her-best 2 courses- wish she could tech more. Most profs don`t remember what its is like to be IN the classroom. Tough but fair- you walk out learning.
in the porcess of taking a course with this professor- great experience- able to clearly connect theory and practice - really meaningful for this semester's work. wish I woud have taken more courses with her.
great to have a professor who has experience in the classroom and shares it. Learned so much about early development- every class was worth on a Fri. afternoon! Hope to take another class with her during the years.
Excellent prof. to have in conjunction with field experience. Always available- responds to emails immediately and has great suggestions because of her many years of being in the classroom. Course was amazing- interesting and useful. Don't miss taking a course with this prof.
Overall she was a good teacher. I found she was a tough marker BUT she is very helpful and allows you to send her work so she can give feedback. I learned a lot from her personal examples
excellent professor- you walk out of class with good understandings and confident to apply what you have learned. Especially kind as she reads work in progress before assignments due- very helpful.
Finally good to have a Prof. who gives ongoing feedback- a good example of formative assessment that we are learning about in this class!!. Very helpful Prof.
She is consistent with feedback- Not like other Profs who take days to get back to you. I've learned so much about classroom practice - really a good course.
great prof- so kind and is really supportive. Learned so much in her class. Feedback is fast and helpful.
This prof. knows what it's like to be in the classroom, she still visits school. Really nice to support you in doing well. I did lousy on a paper that she knew I worked on. She let me make up the grades missing. Really nice as she knew I worked hard.
Very passionate about the field of administration. Hardest marker of any of the Education teachers I know. She seems to forget that she is teaching an undergraduate class. I'm an A student and found her to be tough.
Sheryl is incredibly tough and non-compassionate (though her class is interesting and she has good delivery)
don't miss taking a class with her- so supportive and responds to emails that day.
It's great to have a class that let's students share ideas and "create " after reading soooo much. Just created fabulous units for teaching- can't wait to try out some ideas. Lots of reading- hard marker- but if you stick with it you come out ahead. Same for kindergarten classroom. Finally courses that I'm going to use!!!!!
I actually really enjoyed Sheryl's class. She's extremely knowledgeable about the course and I feel like I learned a lot. However, she's a ridiculously tough grader and is too hard-headed to let the little things go (I'm an A student, 3.86 GPA). Taking out marks for the absolute dumbest reasons that gave me Bs which could have easily been As.
Sheryl's K classroom was the best experience in university so far- at least there is practice after the theory! She is a hard marker but at least it's challenging; you just don't get an easy A like in other education courses. Work hard and you do well. Loved the class!
Seminar classes that go with field work are really important. This Prof really connected theory with practice. Class discussions were amazing and the work was fair while being in the field. I'll look for other classes with Sheryl. She knows schools and the teaching profession. Always made us feel important.
The only early childhood class and a great prof. Sheryl offered a great comprehensive course in early childhood. There is a lot of work but it's worth it. I just finished my stage in kindergarten and boy was I ready.
best class taken this first semester-every student is respected and this Prof. guides you honestly; even when you don't do well she takes the time to work with you until you get it!! I haven't even finished this class yet but I know will take as many classes as I can with her - she's tough in grading but fair because you know what's expected.
Prof. Smith-Gilman has very high expectations, which is also why she's a tough grader. She expects highly of students and she models it by giving high quality lectures, good support and excellent feedback. She also gives long assignments, but they are all hands-on and geared towards learning that lasts and directly related to the work.
A pleasure to have a prof who is authentic; great classes- I always leave with learning something new and important. Going in to the 4th week with this prof- looking forward to a super semester. Really a great model for teaching.
Taking Kindergarten Pedagogy with her this semester. What a great class and what great resources for teaching. I walk out of every class learning and the classes are enjoyable and engaging. This Prof. knows about teaching and is happy to share what she knows so well.
I took her Kindergarten class about 5 years ago. She's interesting and knowledgeable. Don't expect an A even if you work hard. (btw it's only 2 credits) Don't disagree with her or you'll be on her bad side. I felt she didn't value my opinion in class but was accomodating outside of class. Not an easy class but you will learn.
Kindergarten class is 3 credits now and what a class! So much practical work - so worthwhile. Coming to the end of the semester and i really feel prepared to teach in early childhood. She is fair to EVERYONE and wants all students to do well- and we have! Hope to have her again next semester.
Too many readings and each were so long! You also need to do your readings because she randomly asks you to write a reflection based on questions related to the reading. Too much workload and the assignments (even 10% ones) are lengthy and require a lot of work. Dont expect an A in her class, shes a really hard marker for nothing!
This class was one of the best taken in the Ed. program. Challenging but you walk out knowing about early childhood. This is university!!!!Prof. gives feedback until you get an A; amazing that she is always available! Tons of reading but worth it in the end.
She is CLEARLY a harsh marker. She doesn't explain much about the assignments related to field experience. She recommended on using the rubrics when doing them and turn out I got less than I expected. She minus points for stuff she didn't even explain clearly in class or doesn't even mention. She is nice, yes but that pretty much it.
great class - really interesting discussions and finally meaningful. What is special about this PROF is that she offers time outside of class(mostly by email) to give feedback on assignments before handing them in. Really really helpful if you take advantage of her generosity. She really helped me write my perspectives for this class.
I have never done so well in a class at McGill as I did in this class. Sheryl made the difference. I struggle with papers and my grades suffer because of it. She helped me every step of the way helping me write outlines. She would take the time to review my work by email before due dates. Really a GOOD teacher and nice person.
First year in university can be really challening- this prof. is the best for introducing expectations of what is ahead. My friends were in other Dommunication classess and they really struggled. Our class was challenging but never a struggle when there is a great prof. guiding us- we all walked out of class feeling confident. Tough marker & fair.
Fantastic Prof.; just finishing EDEC 203-Every class has been amazing! I've learned so much and enjoyed it all!
Sheryl is rude and gives LOTSSS of readings. She gives really short, non-descriptive instructions but she grades looking for very specific results. She gives short inclass assessments that are worth like 1.3% and gives you 10 minutes to write a two page paper and marks it as if you've had a whole week to work on it. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS.
If you want to become a well -rounded teacher and walk away with knowledge that is useful, then Sheryl will make sure you get there. Granted there is work, but all worth while. Those who complain don't want to put in the effort. One thing for sure, she is VERY supportive in and outside of class.
Sheryl's classes are interesting and she brings loads of experience. She challenges EVERY student and raises the bar to what is needed in an Education class. Be prepared to work but you leave her class with knowledge and tools that you would hope to have after finishing a semester. Importantly, she offers 1:1 time for anyyone who asks.
Didnt think a Kindergarten class would be so difficult- struggled my way through this class, even when I put all my effort into it. Sheryl is very knowledgeable within the course content, however she is very condescending and rude at times. Ive never had any issues with a class before at Mcgill until I took Sheryls class.
While she is extremely knowledgeable about course content and provides an interesting and useful class her feedback and marks do not relate. While she gives you amazing feedback gushing over your projects, dont be surprised if you see a 60 or 70. I think in order for students to get the most out of the class she must be more transparent.
Sheryl led our class with grace, intelligence and humour. We were all nervous about going on our first field experience and she eased our worries. She has tremendous knowledge and keen understandings of what i s needed in education today. I am sorry her class was an intensive as we could have used weeks more!
There has not been one class so far this semester that I have not enjoyed. Our classes are so well connected to the subject area and the learning experiences are meaningful. It is only half way in the semester and we have gained so much. This is my second undergraduate degree and I never had such a positive experience in all my university years.
Best class given last semester- Sheryl respects every student and is always available for help outside class. She pulled me from a B to an A with all her attention and extra coaching. Yes she is a tough grader but seriously- this is university! No one gives you grades for not working-Sheryl gives great classes and has high expectations.
Professor Gilman is very knowledgeable and highly competent however she is known as a tough grader.
a pleasure to finally have a PROF. who loves what she teaches and knows how to teach it. Sheryl brings a ton of experience and is happy to help out any student who wants to learn. Assignments were heavy but we all walked out of that class knowing kindergarten pedagogy. best methods class so far
Anyone who knows Professor Gilman knows she is always there for her students. She genuinely cares about her work and how her students succeed in class. She is ready to offer her time to meet when you need help-not all Profs will do that. I learned a tremendous amount about being a teacher from her- third class with her this past semester!
Sheryl is a great teacher no doubt there! And she will help out of class if needed whether that's face to face or through email. She was honestly one of the only teachers I had who was very helpful during this whole COVID19 situation, always staying in contact with us, not giving us too much work. She's v tough as a grader and be ready to READ!
superclass- great discussions- learned a lot for a seminar class; Prof is very supportive.
WORST TEACHER EVER
Meanest lady ever. Avoid her classes at all costs. So demeaning and humiliating.
Not a nice human being. Makes you think she likes you but will try her best to fail you. Doesn't have the best intentions of her students at heart.
worst teacher ever.
she is EXTREMELY condescending, and will not help you. if you go to her for extra help, she will tell you what to do, but when you rewrite your paper with her directions, she will flip it on you and ask you "what the point of all of this?" and she is one of the worst human beings I have ever met. She does not want you to do well if she hates you.
I absolutely loved having one of my first ever online experience with Prof Sheryl Gilman! She was super understanding and wanted all of us to succeed. The bad reviews probably come from students who didn't show up or participate therefore leading to a bad grade... Show up, listen, do the work its pretty simple!!
Absolutely miserable woman, who won't even honor the policies in the syllabus. Double, triple, quadriple check everything with her, because half the time she goes back on her word.
Professor Sheryl is extremely knowledgeable and very sweet. She is a bit of a tough grader but we are in University so this is expected. She will push you in the right direction and teach you a lot.
Sheryl was by far the worst teacher I've ever had. Absolutely no compassion for students during the COVID pandemic, tough grader, and I've heard multiple stories about her treating students negatively and condescendingly in private. Definitely plays favourites as well.
Prof posted info in the course outline that she didn't go over to "save time". Well guess what, it doesn't save time if you still have to comb over everything on your own. She was defensive and surprised when students had questions about it. This prof is asking to be replaced by technology.
Prof Gilman did not support many of her students and will say things like how did you get accepted here. be a few mins late and you lose marks. very demanding and she treats you like youre stupid if you ask questions about assignments. dont expect a good grade even if you work the way she wants. i hope she retires soon.
Honestly I have no words for how unpleasant taking her class was. Shes incredibly condescending, holier than thou and impossible to reason with. Dont get on her bad side because shes the department head.
This professor is a doorway so to speak between your success in this program. If you don't succeed in her courses and make a good impression, it will haunt you throughout the rest of your degree (she is the department head). She has high standards, she's a tough grader, and she is condescending. If you're stuck with her, give her class your all.
Avoid her sections at all cost. If you're obligated to take her section then stay on her good side or she'll make your semester miserable if she doesn't like you... Very knowledgeable teacher no doubt but she doesn't care about her students learning to get better. -Tough grader, condescending, demeaning.
loving this class- GREAT Prof.
Professor Gilman is a very nice and funny person, however she is very demanding. Be ready to do a lot of writing and peer review. Her grading is inconsistent. On one assignment you will get a 90% and the next one she will give you a 45%. Be ready to have a heavy work load. She wants things done her way but does not give clear instructionsandexample
the best class taken so far- interesting, engaging Prof.a nd so helpful >Really enjoying the course. Bad reviews here come from students who don't get it!
Very passionate about the information when lecturing in class and gives real-life examples. However, her temper can change quickly if things are not going her way. She is also a harsh grader.
Possibly the worst prof at McGill. Looks you in the eye and tells you that your ideas are great before emailing you to tell you that she is giving you a 0 and adding it's 'unfortunate' that you didn't check with her first (but you did). Condescending regarding Indigenous people and children with disabilities, white savior thinks she can 'fix' them.
Sheryl is knowledgable but scary & intimidating. She grades pretty harshly and thinks her ideas are the best. I think she is the only prof who teaches this course so there's no way to really escape her. Sheryl is easy to reach outside of class and is very quick with emails. Always send her your assignments for feedback before submitting!!!
Way too hard of a grader. Submit all work for feedback before assignments were due, shes gives feedback and then gives you a horrible grade and says you shouldve asked for feedback. Super strict and very picky.
Professor Gillman is one of the best teachers I have had. Her course is extremely engaging and fun. However, I can understand how some students below have complained about her grading as she is definitely a tough marker. That being said, I feel like she grades tough but it makes you a better student and has you work for your grades.
Sheryl has all the qualities required of a professor in an education program. She gives specific instructions, provides detailed rubrics and takes the time to give feedback. Obviously if her instructions are not followed and if class content is not incorporated into the assignments, you won't get a perfect grade.
Yes, she is a tough grader and can give harsh comments. Get over it, you're in university. Go to class, do the readings, ask for feedback (follow up on things that are not clear) and you should be golden.
While she's a harsh grader, she will check all your work before you submit and you have to send her your stuff if you want a good grade. I learned a ton from her class, there's so much content
She is rude and inconsiderate of challenges and personal issues students face in her class. She will give you feedback on something, say it's okay, then give you a bad grade. Sheryl can be rude in messages and feedback, and she is not scared to make a remark that will scar you. You will be fine if you know the whole textbook and QEP by heart.
You cannot be late to her class, you will lose mark. You cannot be a person of colour, you will lose mark. You cannot have any language other than English as your mother tongue? She will question how you even got into the university. She expects perfection and demands it. Uses her experiences and many degrees to compare students to her.
One of my least favorite classes at McGill. She made me very anxious, and clearly had students she didn't like. Heavy workload with no room for creativity or difference of opinion. If you don't think like her, it'll show in your grade. Terrible at communication. She made a grading error that penalized me and refused to do anything to help
This professor has vague guidelines yet grades very harshly. She picks on students and is rude
Everyone was scared of her
wonderful professor who has a genuine concern for quality education. You have to put the work in, but the benefits are numerous.Just finished a stage in a kindergarten class- my grounding from this course got me through it.
This Prof offered the most supportive and well targeted course during field work. Besides ind-epth knowledge, Sheryl is so in tune with what is happening in schools today- shares great resources. She is flexible when it comes to due dates too.
Very invested in student success. She's available for one-on-one and also very responsive via email.Great interactive classes- the time flies!Flexible and open to student's creativity.Everyone was so impressed with that-nor typical at McGill.
This prof is super bright and super insightful. You can tell she knows her stuff, which is amazing, but the classroom environment gave me anxiety. If you arrived late, she gets mad, if you're typing notes she gets mad, if you're eating a snack she gets mad. Awful, awful, awful, rip to everyone that has to take her.
WORST prof ever. YOU CANNOT BE LATE FOR YOUR CLASS. i was late for one time and she was annoyed by it and straight up target me in a marketplace assignment. she picked on me and pour me all with the hard questions and denied all my answers purely because she dont like me. AVOID AT ALL COST RUN GUYS RUN.
Possibly one of the toughest profs I've ever had. She is deeply insightful and gives AMAZING resources for teaching K but overall her class is anxiety inducing and she has NO pattern to grading, you could get 100 one week and then 70 the next without changing. Just be ready to put all your energy into this class and struggle...
Sheryl is very insightful but she's rude and everything must be done her way. If you're late to her class be prepared for her to hate you the rest of the semester. Her grading is all over the place. You could get 90s one week and 60s the next. She has her favourites and some of her comments for her grading are very rude and harsh. Good luck.
This was the most anxiety inducing course I have ever taken. Sheryl was extremely rude in her feedback to students. Her grading was very inconsistent. I worked hard and would get 100 one week and 60 the next. ALWAYS email her ahead of any assignment and ask her to review your ideas. This is the ONLY way to do somewhat okay in the course. Good Luck.
Sheryl is dedicated and very knowledgeable; I truly enjoyed this class because of the material covered and the creative assignments. However, even after receiving feedback on assignments beforehand, she often leaves rude comments once they are submitted and seems not to like them anymore. If possible, I would recommend avoiding her.
I appreciate her teaching style, it's engaging. However, she is very rude and mean towards some students. It is clear that she has her favourites. If she does not vibe with you, her attitude will be disrespectful. Her grading rubric for the assignments is not clear, you don't know where she will reduce marks. I get so much anxiety from her class.
She clearly had favourites, which showed in how she spoke to certain students and in her grading. She would often make comments out loud expressing frustration when students left to use the washroom. Hard grader and gives almost no valid feedback.
Sheryl created an incredible class! We did many hands-on activities/discussions, making the class interesting. She offers feedback on nearly all assignments before submitting, so it's easy to get good grades. She can be blunt and judgemental, but is overall very kind! She was willing to change classes/cancel them to accomodate students.
I found her very understanding and kind. She takes the material seriously and expects students to do the same. Maybe passive-aggressive sometimes, but definitely not rude (or a harsh grader). There are reflections at the end of every week, so make sure you don't miss them.
