He's a very good teacher who takes time to explain the material very well and he's also ready to help students having problem with the material covered in class. He's teaching makes it more fun to do math. Home-work problems are very helpful too they get you ready for the test.Highly recommended!
Obviously the two ratings given prior to this were female students (due to the "hot" rating, which has nothing to do with teaching). Paul isn't a bad teacher, but he tends to direct the class at his own pace and becomes frustrated and impatient if others can't match it. I'd only reccomend this teacher for fast learners or math majors.
Hard class but a great professor. Very clear and easy to understand. If you have to take calculus take it with Prof. Young.
Excellent teacher! Took it online under an open entry/exit and finished the course in 6 weeks. Promptly addressed all my questions and very clear in his explanations. Would recommend him to anyone.
This on-line math class is VERY difficult. Prof Young answered all questions and even made special arrangments(sp?) for me to take the final when the math lab was closed. :)
This was an online course. Paul is a good teacher. He is not always responsive in a timely manner though and his answers to how to solve equations leave a lot to be desired. This is a VERY hard course even for a very fast learner because the online material really sucks. You can't pass the course without using outside materials... (I do not know ho
Professor Young is a dynamic young enthusiastic teacher with a great love for his subject. He teaches with enthusiasm & vigor and has lots of energy. He bounces around upfront makes the subject matter look easy and is thorough. Every time I needed help he was amazing, he helped me explained in great detail until I grasped the subject matter. Thank y
I see comments about what a good teacher he is in the classroom. That's good, becuase he this is not the case with his online classes. Do not take this teacher if you are taking an online Math 96 class.
Paul is a great professor, and it shows in his classroom trough his enthusiasm on the subject matter. He goes out of his way to make sure his students pass his tests by giving pretests that are almost identical to the actual tests. Just be sure to attend class, pay close attention to his lectures, and DO THE HOMEWORK.He preps you for the final too!
The BEST professor ever. Made my hatred for calulus completely disapear. I want him to tach all my classes!
One of the best teachers I've ever had!! He is awesome!!
He is a good teacher but he is tricky and throw curve balls inhis tests. I will ot be taking him again due to the fact that he does not review prior to exams, will give you a sample test to work on and the real tests do not resemble the sample making you waste your time.
Not sure what the last person is talking about. The actual tests were practically identical to the practice tests. In fact, sometimes I felt the tests were almost insulting to my intelligence... as if he doesn't expect us to be able to do problems we haven't seen before. This is a prep for calculus, not Drone-in-Training 101. Learn to think!
Paul is perhaps the best math teacher ive ever encountered. Hes totally clear. works out plenty of complete and helpful problems in class. Tests on problems that are either from the homework or practice tests.Lets you use a page of notes which alleviates much of the stress that comes with memorizing tons of formulas.friendly and ready to answer ?'s
He will explain everything crystal clear, and if you do have any questions left, he will explain the subject in many different ways. Great professor. Besides he is somewhat of an easy grader.
Anyone who gives Young a bad rating is delusional or did a class online. He's an excellent teacher who goes the extra mile outside of the classroom to help students as much as he can. Genuinely expresses enthusiasm and humor about math, which can make the subject "less scary" for some people. Yes, there is a slight grading curve too.
Very helpful. Always do your homework.. Practice, practice practice.. he tries to lighten up math. he likes to put the aircondition in super high, so no one would sleep in his class. i love his jokes too!
Would take again if I could. Younger guy, so more approachable. Clarifies everything nicely, just the right amount of homework, and reviews like crazy for tests. You have to seriously try not to pass not to pass. He had an online textbook option for this class, but not sure how often that applies.
Incredibly cute. Completely approachable. Clarifies lectures. Makes trigonometry fun, not boring whatsoever. Really easy to pass hhis class. Procrastanators can pass his class.
Gifted, passionate, and talented teacher. Knows his stuff. Crystal clear while teaching. I loved his style of teaching. Very organized as well. Reviewed alot for tests. Makes practice tests almost identical to the real tests. On the other hand, a bit on the nervous/stressed out side. Always seemed to be in a hurry and annoyed when I asked him for h
Very clear and helpful. workload was a little much imo.
This guy is the bomb!!! Vector-calculus is so easy with him. He explains every theorem to the minute details and explain how they work. Take him for MATH-252!!! It'd be so easy.
He is very helpful and makes the course very interesting. He's very patient and does not make the course impossible to complete. Overall he is a great professor plus he's a cutie :)
he gets a little confusing at times but if you ask him to explai, he will. hes very fun and laid back and will make the practice tests very hard so that the acctual test is easy so if you have that down your solid. he caan be a little strict at times but for the majority of the time hes very laid back.
Stats with Prof Young was fun. Keep up with the homework, and make sure to do the practice tests if you want to do well on the the actual tests. He makes the class interesting by using examples we all relate to. Once you figure out how to make the Ti-84 do most of the work, the class is a breeze. I got an A.
Professor Young was very helpful and understanding throughout the semester. This class online is pretty challenging and has a lot of material to cover for a 3 unit class, with a lot of homework and tests every 2 weeks. This was my hardest class this semester but also the most rewarding. You have to read the whole book and tests are on all chapters.
This is the best math teacher I have ever had! He gives great lectures that are simple to follow and many times amusing! I highly recommend this teacher! I wish he had a Math 96 class available!
Took professor young for math 46 and I have to say, he's by far the best math teacher Ive had. He breaks up class in a timely manner; usually uses the first half of the hour to explain the material then the second half hour he gives a worksheet for you to do. provides review sheets before the tests, definitely planning on taking him for 96
Great professor. I had gotten very sick in the middle of the semester and was close to passing. He made a deal with me that if I could score an 85% on the final, he would pass me with a C. Promptly responded to e-mails.
If you ever want to understand how math relates to the real world just ask Professor Young. Before he teaches you a new concept he tells short stories to paint an image in your head of what youre about to learn. best math teacher ever.
You want to move on for your classes don't take this guy otherwise you will fall behind
I took his online class. The amount of homework he assigned was absurd. You could attempt each problem as many times as you wanted but generally there was about 80 problems assigned per week and each, each problem having 1-6 questions you need to answer to get full credit. He did respond quickly but I thought his expectations were ridiculous.
I liked Professor Young class. He is very polite to all students. It was pretty difficult practice test, but it was good for the actual test. He was always caring his students and answered questions if I did not understand. I want to take his class again!
Took this class online last summer. The online system (mymathlab) is typical of other math classes at the school. But also he uses a online discussion board called Piazza that helped me A LOT. A lot of people participated and helped each other out. And the professor's responses were lightning fast. Make sure to do all of the homework!!
Im taking it right now. So far so good. Im relearning a ton of algebra and trig in this class. Everybody helps out everybody using the online forum board, which is awesome. The professor replies to emails same day. Hes really respectful too. Midterms are long but I think its fair, since you have two tries and the better score counts.
One of the hardest math classes I have ever taken. The book is pretty bad, but I think the profess does a decent job filling in the blanks. The homework sets are insanely long, but pretty much all of the exam questions were variants of homework problems. He seems rushed at times during lecture, probably bc people keep asking lots of questions.
I had to drop this class but not because of the professor. I think the subject matter is just hard. If you don't know your algebra or trig, then problems become really hard. No one told me that i would have remember trig ids.
he is one of the better teachers at city college. he takes the time and explains the formulas, i wish that he would do more examples in class. and maybe crack a joke here and there
Great professor. He is very caring and respectful in emails. The math work online is very good for learning. If you might fail math96, don't concurrently enroll in math15c as advised through him. Because you might fail both. Study hard.
Very helpful and responsive to emails. Holds an office on campus so if you want to ge help in person hes available.
Traditional lecture. I learned that I cant draw/graph 3D pictures worth my life. He tried to communicate the importance and relevance of the subject, but ultimately it was meh. Office hours before class everyday, which was nice.
Online class. Seems like a nice professor but Ive only talked to him over email. Hes very fast at replying and is respectful and careful with his words. The class was a joke though. Everything online except the final, which was only basic questions. I was not challenged at all. Theres a ton of hw but all of it was straight forward.
This is my first math class, I haven't taken math in almost 20 years. I don't even know if I'll pass this class. Professor Young is amazing though. He's nice and he wants us to learn. If I do end up failing this class I'll take it in person with him, and any subsequent math classes as well.
Super nice professor. Very fast to reply to emails and online discussion posts. The class is hard but he made it bearable and reasonable.
Great prof. Even though this class was online, he does come across as caring about your learning and overall experience. There's a ton of homework in this class, nearly 100 problems per week. It took a couple weeks to get used to this kind of workload, but now I can understand why the prof. assigns so much work. It truly helps with the learning.
Great course and great prof. This was my first online course and the learning curve was very high. Lots and lots of reading and working on your own. But the online discussion board is extremely helpful and the prof is very active on it.
Wonderful professor! I'm taking this class as a review and yet I'm learning a lot! This is an online class, where you do the work mostly on your own, watching videos and doing the fully online homework. But there's a discussion board where the professor, along with a small handful of fellow students, are very responsive.
I took his online class, there are 4 exams in total. 2 online, 2 in person (this type has an extra part which is done on paper). You ought to put in work to be able to get an A for it. You're expected to ask and answers someone question every week which is free points. there are about 50 hw problems due every Sunday midnight.
Great professor! This was my second time taking the class. I understood things so much more this time. Lots of homework but its online. Just do what he tells you to do, like attend the math lab, and youll be fine.
Online class. Its basically a self paced class where you read the book and watch video lectures, then you do weekly problem sets. The discussion board is super helpful and the professor is super active on it. Participation on the discussion board is mandatory and counts for grade. Two in person exams and the rest is online.
Before taking this class I was completely LOST when it was anything math related. If I would have followed his rubric I would have gotten an A+. He clearly lays out his expectations in his syllabus. SHOW UP to the math center, PARTICIPATE on piazza, and BREAK UP YOUR HOMEWORK, don't wait until the last minute. PLENTY of practice tests before tests.
I would not recommend this professor at all. He uses piazza to keep communication with the class and his comments can be very rude makes you not want to participate. He is really useless when it comes to this class, he will answer emails but if you want any additional help he will just send you to the math center. Bad teacher.
I really don't like math, but I was able to pass with his help. Show up ask questions and do your homework daily.
Taking this class showed me how weak I am in algebra and trig. The professor proves everything and builds everything from the ground up. Class is lecture heavy but he covers all of the concepts and tries to tie things together. The online knewton homework system is insane, but I guess I need the practice. Will probably have to retake this class.
Awesome professor. Always available and willing to help during office hours and theough email. His approach is traditional lecture homework and midterms. Paper assignments that are due once a week. Sticks to his syllabus and schedule and doesnt mess around, which makes a huge difference to someone that works full time.
Great teacher. His lecture is clear and easy to follow. Homework looks like exams. And if you have questions he responds to email and has office hours.
Great professor! Took this class online that it was challenging but the professors discussion board helped a ton. I went in for in person office hours a couple of times and that was super helpful. He is very approachable and made the subject easy to understand.
Great professor. He's very enthusiastic about the subject. I am taking this as a part of their "X" class, where we get double the amount of class time. The classes are 3 hours long, which is pretty painful at times, but at least the pace isn't crazy fast.
Great professor! The professor takes the time to explain the material. Between lecture and reading the book, youre good to go. No surprises on the tests, the study guides pretty much covers everything.
Even though this is an online class with no live lectures, the professor is always ready to help and answer questions. Expect same day replies. Participation in the online discussion board is a requirement, which turns out to be super helpful since other struggle with the things as I did. Two in-person exams, which are mostly homework questions.
Great class. Even though it's an online class, the professor has lightning speed responses in the discussion board and email. Even though most of the learning is done on your own, he never makes you feel like you're totally alone in this class. Other students help out as well, which is nice.
He was nice but I would not take him again because he had us use Hawkes to learn the material, practice problems, homework, and take quizzes/tests. You are paying to be taught by a website and he only had one zoom meeting a week if you had any questions on what you learned. If there is another choice, chose the other person.
One of the best math professor at City. Every week we had 2 hw due (which are 25% of your grade), 2 posts on discussion board (5%), 3 exams (15% each, one due must be done either using Zoom/Proctorio), final exam (25%, also using Zoom/Proctorio). If you can't join the zoom meetings he provides you the link to the video and notes unlike some other..
The class was as good as it could get being online. As with any online class, you'll have to put in work by yourself and ask many questions. Luckily Professor Young was available to us through a discussion board. The content itself was manageable. The homework typically took 1-4 hours, and the exams were just like the homework. Still a great class!
The class was as good as it could be despite being online. Being an online class you would have to expect to study by yourself and read the textbook and asking questions through a discussion board. Luckily, Professor Young was available to us when we had questions. The homework took 1-4 hours per week with exams just like the homework problems.
Calc 3 is hard, but Paul makes it even more difficult by using Hawkes software. The software makes WebAssign and Aleks look more appealing. It is frustrating to use, unforgiving with mistakes, time-consuming, and constantly times out even with a secure wifi signal. Take a different professor because he's so lazy.
Awful, lazy teacher. You get taught entirely by the textbook system for the class. For our tests, the professor didnt even take the time to grade our work. Take this class with a different professor if at all possible. The only good thing was that with the repetitive homework system, it made it easy to remember the patterns of the specific answers
Homework software used is beyond difficult (think webassign or ALEKS but multiply difficulty and frustration by 2-3x). You will teach yourself this class using hawkes. DO NOT take this class online, it consumes an enormously disproportionate amount of time. Tests are very hard and the same ruthless online hw software grades it. DO NOT TAKE ONLINE!
This class made me hate math. Maybe it's because it is online but it is just difficult to say the least. Not necessarily the professor's fault, you will just be teaching yourself the entire course. If you are great at simply reading a textbook for hours, this is for you. Since that style doesnt help me learn, I simply cant recommend this class.
I am confused by the anger others brought in their recent reviews. Professor Young is super active on the Canvas discussion board, available during offices hours, and never missed a single class. The live classes are not officially part of the class, but added in by the professor to give students more support. He's the opposite of lazy!
this is my 3rd online math class at city. the class' style mirrors the other classes that i took. an online system Hawkes delivers the content, homework, and tests and professor young backfills with additional lectures and a lot of help through his discussion board. he's very responsive and accommodating. not a perfect class but he did his best.
Professor Young was a fair instructor. His syllabus clearly states what one needs to do to get a passing grade. Despite the class being online and no set meeting times he was available to meet via zoom and gave great feedback and extra help. To pass this class you have to keep up with the work, and the Professor was there to help with questions.
nice guy but uses Hawkes software which is absolutely terrible and teaches you nothing. you will be on your own. also 4 assignments per week around 20-30 q's per assignment it takes a long time to finish. I did not learn anything and I would advise taking a professor that does their own lecture videos not some dumb software
I took his online class. It was hard but not unreasonable. Gave homework sets that were about 100 per week. If you understand the material it went fast but if you didn't read the sections the homework was hard. Do yourself a favor and read the sections before they are assigned. His exams were right from the homework so homework was worth the time.
He was difficult but fair. Make sure to read ahead and keep up with homework. Go to his office hours when you don't understand, or email. (His office is like the stereotype college professor's office)
This professor really prepared me for the next course. I took the next course with students who did not have professor Young and I circled them. He maybe difficult at times but well worth the challenge. Exams are straight forward if you go to class and pay attention. Super helpful in office hours.
Only reason I will get an A is because I took differential calculus in high school. Average for first test was a 66% so a lot of people dropped. I have had a mental breakdown almost every week from homework. His lectures don't help with the difficulty of homework and tests. You get a cheat sheet on tests which helps. He over complicates explanation
I can't say enough good things about this professor. His lectures are clear and to the point. The exams follow the homework. There is a lot of homework some weeks but it really did help with the exams. And best of all is that he had office hours that few people would go to so I got to ask a lot of questions.
He has a lot of homework but it really helped prepare for exams. Gave reviews that were almost exactly like the exams. Show up having read the sections beforehand and everything makes perfect sense. Attendance mattered, people who showed up did well.
Super easy professor sometimes too easy. He would cater to the weakest students and there were a lot. This is a check in then check out sort of class
I got a C in this class because I forgot about it for the majority of the term, but I really wish I hadn't because Mr. Young is an amazing teacher that made understanding calc 1 a breeze. He's quick to respond to emails and his office hours are basically empty. Great teacher.
A lot of homework but it really helped you prepare for the midterm and exam. Make sure you do the practice exam as much as you can and you'll be good. And his class is verry help me prepare for Cal 2
This professor was really great. Helpful during office hours. Would respond to emails in a timely manner. The syllabus explained what it took to get a good grade. Whould recommended.
Took a summer online class. Straight forward. Answered emails and even had face to face office hours. All online except the final that had to pass.
Really a great professor. Not easy and make you work for the grade, but is fair and willing and able to help. Pay attention and you will pick up on some humor. You can tell her has been around the block a few times.
Professor Young is AMAZING! He did a great job explaining mathematical concepts and working out the proofs for most of the theorems covered. Kind guy and always willing to help during office hours! Extra credit was sometimes offered in the form of homework sections. He gives practice exams before tests to help study. I would 100% take him again.
Good professor.
After my stats professor went absent for the rest of the semester, Prof. Young stepped up to the plate. Over the course of the semester after Spring Break, I saw class population go back up. His lectures are easy to understand despite difficult course material, and they make you confident in acing his exams. Highly recommend him for any math class.
Perfect class if you like to use outside sources as your primary sources to learn the material. I recommend anyone taking calc 2 to review limits, properties of exponents, sequences, and finite series. For applications of integrals always think "Slice and Sum". Professor Young always replies to your messages if you need help.
