Reads directly from slides. Doesn't know that much knowledge from her head. Students often correct her. Will not budge or help you. I received a 69.25 and she wouldn't give me the .25% to get a C in the class before I apply to Nursing school. No need to go to class, just read the slides. Not very entertaining at all. VERY BORING CLASS with her
This lady is terrible! She has horrible public speaking skills, and very little confidence in herself. Rabin is not willing to help students outside of class, and the few times I did attend her office hours she was useless! She stated to the class that she caught people cheating but did nothing about it. Slides come directly from the book. Boring!
has to be the worst teacher i have ever had!
Lectures are word for word from the book, with same pictures and all. Seldom knows the answer to student questions. Many questions on the tests go into too much detail, basically requiring you to memorize the text book word for word.
She is a terrible "teacher" but very nice if you go see her. Attend her class and go see her after tests and she'll take that into account if you don't do as well on your tests of which she has 4. Her curve is set to the highest score in the class. I got a 100 on the last test only because she set my 61/65 to be the highest.
I didn't think her lectures helped very much. Not the greatest of teachers. Standard biology class that relies on the book. You definitely have to study for the tests, they are not easy, but not impossible either, she has a good mix of hard and easy questions. Focus on reading the book and you will be fine. About 10-15% fail the tests so study!
I can't believe the other reviews were for the same prof! I was very apprehensive to take this class after reading those reviews but she was great. Sure I went to class, read the text,& studied for exams but thats what you should do. Her lectures were helpful, she made it easy to understand, she was very approachable, exams came from the slides.
I was terrified of this class thanks to this site and word of mouth. This professor is NOT hard. This class is only difficult if you don't want to put effort into it. Attend lecture, read the slides, read the textbook... and STUDY! She grades on a curve and was SO nice to my class.
Dr. Rabin is one of the worst professors at U of L. At the beginning, she tells you to just attend class and take notes. "You don't need to read the book. It's just for supplemental help." That is the biggest lie I have ever heard. She finds tiny, insignificant details from the book to test off of. It is insulting how useless she is. AVOID!
This class is difficult, and the tests are extremely detailed and book-oriented. That being said, most of the people here probably didn't even bother going to class. Rabin actually does know what she's talking about, and she's really nice if you put in the effort and actually approach her outside of class.
says u dont need the book at begining of class, then to find out she test little details from the book. terrible class
Rabin is amazing! I took bio 240 with Steffen and 242 with Alexander at first. Unlike them, Rabin actually "dumbs down" the material so you can understand it. The tests are easy and she only expects you to know what she covers in class, NOT THE STUFF YOU DON'T COVER IN CLASS so attendance is important. She's a sweetie and I'm so glad I took her!!
I have to agree, she is a horrible teacher. She basically writes paragraphs on PowerPoint and reads them off in class. Then she gets offended when people don't come to her useless lectures. If you take this class, the book will be your best friend, which isn't good news because the book is almost as boring as she is.
She doesn't test you over anything she doesn't say in class. She doesn't ask overly wordy questions on her test. She is very open about her office hours and is willing to help! Be prepared to study and you'll do fine!
Immunology! Loved the class. Dr. Rabin is awesome as always; Only test from lecture so go to class, so you exactly what to expect. Impressed.
She is awful!!!! doesn't explain things in detail because she already knows the info so she assumes you do too. if you don't read the book and get tutoring you will be completely lost. tests are extremely tricky and detail oriented.
Quite honestly one of the most useless teachers I have ever had. The fact that she is a doctor makes me seriously question who certifies things like that. If you can avoid having her, then for the love of god do everything within your power to do it. She teaches off of a slideshow that is almost verbatim from the textbook. She is utterly useless.
She uses everything out of the book so if you read the chapters before class, it's going to be easier to follow some of the harder topics. I think she did a good job breaking things down and was always willing to help with questions. I would take her again
It is completely based on the book, make sure you do the online homework and try not to miss a test day.
I skipped this class whenever I could just so I wouldn't have to sit and listen to her voice for more than an hour. I took AP Bio in the past so I think it helped understand more. Always look at her study guides and the TAs guides. Never miss a homework assignment, she scales it down and adds it to your final grade. Can be easy if you study well.
This class was really boring to sit through and it was hard to understand some of the things that she would talk about because she went super fast. Besides that, the homework is easy and the tests are easy as long as you study a little the night before.
Great professor, but difficult material. The class periods before tests were review days and very helpful. Spent about one class a week analyzing scientific journals which helped reduce amount of difficult information on tests. Very nice and helpful.
Doctor Rabin is the typical goofynerdy biology professor. I would suggest going to every lecture and SI meeting- since 5 exams make up the majority of your grade. I would also suggest doing the online homework right after class so you don't forgot (only 24 hours after lecture to complete it). Not too hard of a class, I was only 2% away from an A.
Doctor Rabin is the typical goofynerdy biology professor. I would suggest going to every lecture and SI meeting- since 5 exams make up the majority of your grade. I would also suggest doing the online homework right after class so you don't forgot (only 24 hours after lecture to complete it). CORRECTION: She curved my grade to an A!!!
Dr. Rabin's tests are based over her powerpoints (which she doesn't post on Blackboard), so I would advise going to class. I didn't go to class after Thanksgiving break and managed to get a B but could've gotten an A had I attended lecture. She's the typical bio professor, but I thought she was a pretty solid professor. All tests multiple choice.
I took Dr. Rabin for Immunology. You have to learn material and read primary research articles. She is very helpful to students that have never had to use primary literature. You write one paper on an immunological disease. If you do not participate in paper discussions you will do very badly in class. I really enjoyed this class and this prof.
If you go to this class and pay attention you will pass. The only homework is online and impossible to poorly on (you get 5 chances to answer each question correctly). The test questions come straight from her slides. This is an easy A. You don't need the book- just get the clicker she requires for lecture and the code for online content.
took Steffen for the same class but when I took it with Rabin, I went up 2 letter grades. Has nerdy sense of humor and is a sweet lady. Willing to help explain concepts if you dont understand. There's online hw which is helpful for the exams. The huge book isnt necessary unless you're a bio major. go to class. Highly recommend prof Rabin
Dr. Rabin is very helpful! If you aren't understanding concepts she will explain them if you ask her to. Biology 240 is a tough class no matter who you have so the tests are challenging. I reccomend you go to the SI study sessions. They are very helpful! There is also homework online due each week but it is an easy completion grade.
Dr. Rabin made me love biology and provided so much to my understanding of the subject through her class. She is upbeat, clear, and even for an evening class she did a great job of keeping the class' attention. Helpful, grades fairly, and provides plenty of room to help you excel in her class. She inspired me to become a Biology major by taking her
She has an awesome way of teaching, and a really nerdy sense of humor which I loved. She answers questions clearly, and here tests aren't too tough as long as you take notes and read. Great professor, though.
Rabin has been absolutely amazing. She goes out of her way to explain things, and though her lectures are long, they are packed with information for the test. She is the best professor I've had. Must attend class to grasp material.
I love her style of teaching. She has powerpoints with diagrams and written notes and then elaborates on them verbally. She is very good at staying focused (unless people get up or talk during her class) and I find that her lectures are sufficient for success on the test. Highly recommend!
Dr. Rabin is an amazing professor. She makes nerdy jokes which relate to the content and help understand it better. The homework is nice grade padding if you need it. She makes the knowledge accessible and is there for her students. I wish more professors were like her. I'm not a bio major because of her.
She is an amazing professor. She is always there for her students and includes nerdy jokes that make the content more interesting and accessible. She is always there during office hours and makes them more organized through her appointment system. She wants her students to be successful and understand. I am now a bio major because of her.
If you pay attention in class you will be prepared for the test, and if you have questions go to her office hours and she will be more willing to help you. Her lectures are also super interesting, and she throws in super nerdy jokes which is awesome. Rabin is one of my fave professors at UofL, I just wish she taught all the biology classes.
CAUTION: This is a weed out class, so don't expect it to be easy. If you don't go to class, you won't make it out with anything above a C. Dr. Rabin is willing to help if you tell her you don't understand the material. The SI sessions help tremendously so take advantage. Tests are extremely difficult so it's important to study weeks ahead of time.
Ms. Rabin is a good professor. She has great commentary on the notes, which helps with remembering things for the tests. She's sometimes funny. Her tests are easy, but only if you memorize a majority of the notes. There is a decent amount of notes, but they're all on BlackBoard so you don't have to write them down. I would take this class again.
I would recommend this class to anyone taking bio 102. She actually makes biology fun to learn about. If you pay attention and read over her slides, its an easy A !
By far the best biology I've ever had
This class made me realize biology isn't for me. To do well on the test, you need to go beyond memorizing the material and actually know how and why everything happens in extensive detail. The tests are very critical thinking based.
Hard class. You have to really understand the material to do well. SI sessions help tremendously. Go to office hours. Do all of the homework because you will need the grade buffer. You HAVE to study in advance because it's hard to get the grade you want by studying one or two days before. Dr. Rabin's lectures were helpful and easy to understand.
She was a good teacher but you have to work hard in this class. The lectures arent posted on blackboard so make sure you go to class!
Class: immunology Don't take her if you don't have to. Test was (only) 10 short answer Qs (miss 3, you're screwed). Q's were random details, not broad themes. Won't provide lecture slides, so you write in class and tune her out (unless you can focus). Very harsh test grader. Very little partial credit, tests are hard to pass. Easy class made hard
I don't recommend taking this class at U of L. In particular, this professor's lectures don't match up with the exam questions. Use outside material if you must take this class.
Test questions are random. As others have said, easy class made difficult.
Rabin mostly stays on course with the book, but occasionally she'll add more in her lectures/cut out stuff. My biggest issue was that the lectures barely scraped the surface of the content presented in the book, and the tests consisted largely of book content. Speaking of tests, a lot of questions are phrased really badly so watch out for that.
Dr. Rabin has a passion for Biology but she delivers her lectures in a uninteresting and tedious way. The book was useless honestly because some of her information clashed with the book and she bases her exams off her lectures. Contacting her outside of class is rather difficult and leaving the classroom mid-lecture is openly criticized. Beware.
Dr. Rabin is a decent professor who will teach you what you need to know for Bio 240. She sometimes made lecture confusing, so I would suggest going to the SI sessions at least once a week. Her tests often asked questions on unsuspected topics so look over your notes a lot. Overall, she's not bad, but I probably wouldn't take her again.
Tons of online homework which makes reading the chapters impossible because of how long they are. Tries to be funny only gets laughs for the brown noses in the class. Doesn't post powerpoints. Tests are a mix of lecture and book. So hard to follow in lecture, half the class fell asleep. Do anything to avoid her class and she doesn't give tests back
I fear science, and this class was not only very easy, but enjoyable and interesting. Dr. Rabin is straightforward, friendly, and does not make you purchase a book if you don't want to. I recommend anyone who needs a science GenEd and is wary of the subject to take her. We focused only on the human body, which made the subject more personal and fun
She puts blanks in the power points so if you skip you wont get all the info. Also if you skip you lose clicker points. But as long as you show up you will pass. Easy A, didn't use the book, just studied with the SI materials.
Rabin's lectures aren't all that great. Exams are pretty average and your five exams plus homework make up your grade. Wouldn't recommend the class if you don't enjoy science. We were trying a new program called cengage for our homework grade. The homework never helped understand class materials and was due every Sunday. Overall average Bio lecture
As a person who is not a bio major, I think she is a great teacher to take. Her lectures are not boring and she tries to make them fun and interesting. There is no homework, just tests and clickers. You will lose clicker points if you don't go class, but they aren't much. I really recommend this teacher to anyone taking bio102. Very easy class.
Rude when accessed out of class. If you don't understand bio originally, she will not make it any easier to understand. There are easier bio 102 professors
Attendance is mandotory due to iclicker question points every class. No book required everything from her lectured powerpoint slides and class consists of 4 exams.
Attendance is counted by using clicker points. Four 50 question exams and 50 clicker points compose the grade. Dr. Rabin explains things well and covers relatable-to-life information in this course, which is important for a Gen ed level course. Go to class, take notes, and study before the test and the class should be an easy A. No textbook req.
I got a C with Rabin in 240. Retook it another school and got an A+! Her test questions are very oddly written and she doesn't always cover the content in lectures. Don't take her!
Rabin is a great professor, she's very sweet, and attempts to make class fun. However, her tests are extremely difficult. Test questions are worded funny and are very difficult to understand. This class is very lecture heavy and you must be willing to put in a lot of out-of class effort to get a reasonable grade.
She reads right off the slides so don't buy the textbook. Be able to apply info, don't just memorize it. She is very nice during office hours. She knows the material well, but she is so intelligent that she isn't the best at communicating it so that students can understand. Put in the work and you will get a decent grade.
Tests were really difficult. She's gives you other assignments to help with your grade though. I found it difficult to reach her by email.
This teacher is awful. Doesn't give back exams so you can't really learn from past mistakes. She tells you not to read the textbook but her lectures are so useless that you have to anyway.
I would never take her again in my life. I tried studying different ways for every exam and always ended up with the same score even though I attended EVERY lecture. Her exams are not lecture material so when studying you will have to reteach this class. I have a 3.7 gpa and I am an Honors student and I found this class very difficult!
Dr. Rabin is a very kind woman who makes herself very accessible to her students. I got an A through fully dedicating myself to the class: I attended SI sessions, attended every lecture, did all the homework, used the textbook (not required) as a supplement, and went to her office hrs. There are lots of buffer points, and she offers extra credit.
She used powerpoints and would leave blanks on the slides she posted on blackboard so you would have to take the notes during class. Used iclicker questions as participation points for coming. No textbook necessary. Study the powerpoints and the tests arent highly difficult.
This was by far the worst class I have taken thus far. The tests were very specific, and unreasonable. My classes averages on the tests were 58%. The class is so big that it is extremely difficult for her to find time for every student so she doesn't. I highly recommend going to lecture, any review sections, and all tutoring sections possible.
Her test are worded so weird. She does not explain everything that's on slide of the powerpoint. If you can take the other Biology class.
She lectures for the whole class and then tells you that there is going to be an exam the next class. The exams are very confusing and hard. I spent hours preparing for these exams and got a low C at best. I am a smart student and struggled to pass. She also has clicker questions for participation points and they are about 2 to 3 points a class.
I really enjoyed Dr. Rabin. Keep in mind this is a "weed-out" class, so exams aren't going to be super easy, but as long as you pay attention you can do well on them. Good lecturer, homework assignments and participation help pad your grade, but also reinforce content. Go to class, do the readings, do the assignments, and you'll do well
You can pass all the exams with Bs or better and still receive a D in the class. Your grade is essentially subject to your attendance and her will. If you do take the class her current TA Will holds wonderful SI sessions and will teach you what she fails to.
To her credit, she's entertaining in class. Be prepared to take lots of notes though. I passed by copying my notes a few times and reading the book/Khan Academy. Put in the outside work and you should swing at least a B-. I normally recognized test questions from lectures/application, so while they're hard they aren't completely random.
This is based off of the first exam so far this semester. I was very worried about this class after taking Bio 242 and how hard that was. This, however, is much like high school Bio. Dr. Rabin is very nice and takes it all step by step and it's very engaging. I was worried about the first exam but I did very well. I would study a week before tests.
She has this policy of 'write what she says, don't write what's on the board', so sometimes it's kind of hard to hear her. Her tests are hard, because of the wording and even if you have a good grade with the clicker points and participation, you'll still get a poor grade if you fail a test. Most of the time, she's not very helpful when asking.
The class was not necessarily hard but definitely not easy. If you devote a lot of time to studying then you will most likely do well. I honestly didn't get much out of her lectures and found them boring. She recommended to take notes and then merge them with her power points, which actually helped. Her tests are worded weird.
I loved this class! Dr. Rabin has really hard exams, but nearly once a week there are easy-ish quizzes to help offset your overall grade. Her lectures are interesting but you really have to take notes on what she says and then combine that with what the powerpoints say, because they don't match up. Go to class and office hours if you need help
This is one of the worst classes I've ever taken. Professor Rabin's classes are basically unnecessary, because you can still pass the quizzes and tests as long as you get the information on the slide shows. Her tests are hard and worded weird, and she assigns hours worth of homework every week. I'd never take her class again.
She would have questions on her exams that she did not cover in class.
What she talks about in class, is not on the exams. She goes so fast on the slides too you cant even write anything down completely, I even tried to just write down what she said and not what was on the slide like she wants us to and I STILL could not get everything. Semester isnt over yet but Im sitting at a D. DO NOT TAKE
She gives a lot of homework that is not in the tests. The tests are not what are in the power points but are on what she says in class. If you don't come to class you won't get clicker points and your grade will go down.
During class, I feel as if I understand the material. As soon as I go home and begin the readings and homework, I'm lost. The tests are "application based", meaning no matter how hard you study, you have to be able to apply it to scenarios. Class averages on tests have been in the 60% range and she still refuses to curve.
Dr. Rabin is a great professor. All the others commenting that it was hard, obviously didn't go to class or study. She goes over everything you need to know in her lectures and powerpoints... you just need to make sure you really understand it. It's easy to get a decent grade if you actually try.
Shira Rabin is a very good professor when it comes to making sure you realize how much you need to KNOW the material. Every test is application based in her class and she does not curve it. I study multiple hours a week and I still can't understand the material the way she wants. She takes Clicker questions so show up to class.
Great bio class for those not interested in studying science because class content is relatable and not just random science info. She goes really fast when lecturing so you'll always have to keep up or take notes after class. Iclicker questions and quizzes for most chapters. Make sure you understand content and not just memorize.
Dr. Rabin has very difficult tests and her lectures move very fast, but she provides all her information on blackboard after class. She allows you to ask questions and discuss things with your group which is really helpful. As long as you do the homework, takes notes, and read the suggested sections you'll do fine.
Her exams are somewhat difficult, but she is trying to prepare you for upper level classes, which you need. You do have to thoroughly understand the material. I did very well in her class by going to her office hours. She is super nice and does want you to do well. Quizzes and assignments help your grade. You just have to put in the work studying!
AMAZING!!! Such a great professor who cares about her students!! She is by the best professor I have ever had and I would recommend her class. Tests are hard but she is always there to help you.
Dr. Rabin cares about your learning! Just put in effort, go to PAL sessions and you should get an A. You'll have to think and memorize as with all courses, but Dr. Rabin structured the class so that you can learn the easy stuff before class and then review content + introduce harder concepts in class. Best class taken during this semester (COVID).
She is amazing! With being online, she understands its difficult and uses everything possible to ensure that you learn the content. There are a lot of ways to earn points so if you do bad, thats on you.
Dr. Rabin had micro online and she was so understanding of the current circumstances. Her lectures are interesting and she's passionate about the topics. If you come to class and answer clicker questions, then you'll do fine.
Professor Rabin was my favorite professor this semester, shes very kind and genuinely cares about her students. If you have the option to take her (especially online) do it!
This is the second course I've had with Dr. Rabin and to be honest she is my favorite professor so far at UofL. She is extremely nice and goes above and beyond to make content for her students that is accessible and easy to understand. If you can, try to take her classes!
Literally one of the best professors Ive had by far. I took this class completely online due to Covid and she did an amazing job making it understandable due to it being online. The tests are a little difficult but nothing too crazy. 10/10 recommend
Her class consisted of watching online lectures, her reviewing the online lectures during class time, having us answer IClicker questions in class time, group quizzes, and pretty tough exams.
She was a good person and a good professor but her teaching style is not the best. You have to watch videos and bring that knowledge to the in-person class. It was weird and many of us did not enjoy that. Also, study and stay focused or it'll be difficult.
Her class is dependent on watching the panopto's before every lecture. I would not say she is the best lecture wise but she does give you enough content to be able to pass. Just make sure to study for a few hours before every exam and you should be fine. I chose to have her my following semester because her panopto learning style grows on you.
Prof. Rabin was very clear on what she expected from her students. There were plenty of opportunities to get points in this class. Make sure to listen and take notes on her panpto recordings, they make the material easier to understand and you will not be confused in class!
I'm not a BIO major, and took this as an elective, it still looks like I am going to pass with a B. If you do good on everything else, you can pretty much fail all the tests. If you want an A though, you'll need to do good on the tests. You need to go to class every day to get the clicker points. Overall a good class/professor.
you can fail all the exams and pass with a C as long as u do good on the homework. she's changing her ways of teaching for the following online semesters (as she said) so hopefully you'll have it better. If you want higher than a C you have take the time to study fr
Take any other professor but Dr. Rabin for Bio 240. She designs her exams to be as difficult as possible. Literally, she has said this. Questions are always convoluted and confusing, which is a challenge for much of the class, and this feedback she seems to refuse to digest. She is not in the least accommodating and is rather stubborn in her ways.
It's not an easy-A class, but her chief goal aside from teaching biology is for her students to do well on the exams: almost everything that happens in this class is geared for this result. The material isn't all easy, and doing the work assigned, including going to class, is important. If you do that, a B is almost assured and an A is attainable.
needed this class for a math major and she was good, I recommend her over Hopp, goes over details more. Homework is hard, quizzes are easy, and tests are average level difficulty. You have to put in alot of hours studying the material, it moves by quick with alot of content so its key to stay on top. Open to questions, overall good professor.
On one hand, this was one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken and Shira designs it that way. On the other hand, I learned how to really study for science classes because I had no other option. Decided biology wasn't for me, but it wasn't Dr. Rabin's fault. Flipped classroom is weird and stressful, though.
I withdrew from her class for non-grade related reasons, however she is a wonderful teacher and she is truly passionate about what she is teaching. She cares about her students and wants everyone to succeed. The class is difficult, but she does an amazing job in conveying the information.
Rabin is one of the few professors that I would say actually teaches during her lectures. There's a lot of homework outside of class, which can be annoying, but it also allows you to not have to study quite as much for the exams. There's no final and overall felt that all the exams, besides the first one were fairly easy.
She was awesome. I was expecting this class to be difficult, but the pre-class assignments and videos really help you learn the content before class. She does clicker questions and lectures, but they are helpful! It feels like a lot of work, but if you do the assignments and study a little bit you will get a good grade.
BEWARE!! She has the worst grading scale I have ever seen. She will give you multiple attempts on the homework but won't give you the best score, she'll average it with the rest of the attempts. She gives the most confusing exams. I'm going to fail her class and have to retake it so thanks for that Professor Rabin! I'll never retake her!
She isn't really good for online Micro she told me personally to look over all the LO's and the Quizzes and Assignments and which I did, and I was still caught off guard by her exams, I'm more then likely going to fail and have to retake it later, Sweet lady shes just confusing and awful!
This course was tough, but I finished with a B after hovering around a C. The final two open-note exams and a project boosted my grade. content was dense, with 30 mc questions per exam. Success came from using learning objectives as study guides. I'd choose this professor again due to unit-based exams. & on respodus lockdown
Rabin is a mixed bag - her lectures can be helpful, but the class has a lot of work outside of class. The exams are tough, but doing the assignments and using tools like Unstuck ai can help you do well.
