Don't take this class if you expect to pass
First test score, 42/100, and I was above the class avg... dropped.
Noone is passing.
She is a tough tester but is helpful and clear during class. Calls on students during class for answers and sometimes puts you on the spot.
i thought she made this class very easy, she was very thorough with explanations and examples!
Way hard grader!!!
fairly hard professor, but compared to all the other math professors, is definitely the best. This was my 3rd time trying to take 211 and she was the first professor that I was able to pass
Hardest C I ever got
Very clear teaching. Always available during office hours to help students. Very demanding- expects a lot from students and wants to see them succeed.
Very difficult class to pass but she is more than happy to help answers questions about assignments
Ok kind of teacher...took the course with her last semester...she was not that bad..her final was hard though..
Very hard grader, and often puts you on the spot in class.
She grades really tough. Very clear and helpfull though.
She's not bad
I hope you have some math backround cuz her review chapter is very tough. Highest grade in our class was B and there were atleast 8 F's out of 20 students. She doesn't believe in calculators and she gives no time for tests. Get ready to think fast!
Very tough, she gives alot of homework but its rarely graded, just do it so u understand. She doens't curve tests and her tests are time limited without calculators. if you can, choose someone else.
She is a wonderful teacher I've ever had. She is very helpful, and her tests are always interesting. In the test, she give easy numbers so that we don't have to use calculator. Her tests always cover all what she taught in class. She taught how to use notation very clear. The best teacher!!!
very very hard grader. goes to fast and expects too much. everything must be done her way and getting help in tutor lab isnt beneficial because its not her way.
not a good teacher at all, dont take her
Very Very Hard, She flies through everything and grades extremely hard. Do not take her for your own sake
no calculators on tests succked bad. lot of homework. do not take i beg you. half our class reamined at the halfway point of semester. does scsu even look at these things?
Never failed a math class in my life until this one she is by far the worst teacher in St. Cloud.
the corse is hard unless you are math inclined she is probably one the best professors for 112 i would take her again and probably will have to but she is not all that helpful but what math teacher is.
This class is the worst math class I have taken ever! I used to love math always a statight-A student in math and I have a c. She moves way too fast! Never able to use a calculator.
EXCELLENT PROFESSOR!!!!
I think she has the potential to be a good teacher, but she wasn't when I had her. She flies through the material and she doesn't stop for many questions. She is so picky with the way things are written. Tests are difficult and calculators are not allowed. No points for homework. If you can, take another prof for this class.
Very hard class. She is willing to help her students with the material. She is a very hard grader.
didn't have much time for students. went really fast. She is very smart and thinks her students are equally as smart. take her if you are good in math and like to learn at a fast pace.
Tests were so hard compared to the material taught. Good teacher...bad tests.
She goes very quickly through material. Much faster than another professor of the same course.
Hate her
very difficult tests, much more so than the limited material covered in test. do your homework, thoroughly.
This was my second time taking the class. She was better than my previous professor. Tests are hard, and designed to not use calculators. If you do your homework and go to her for help (she's very helpful if you ask) then you will get a good grade.
she is very clear and goes over the material so everyone understands it the tests can be hard but i did well in the class..just make sure you study
She is an awful teacher! Avoid her like the plague. Treats her students like they are stupid and acts like her gifted child is smarter than us. She does try to explain things very well but the approach she uses sucks. I am a straight A student and I got a D.
Class is hard, but what do you expect, it's calculus. Helpful if you want to see her in her office. She was always very friendly in class. She can put you on the spot when asking questions. I think it helps though because it keeps you focused during class. If I had to do it all over again, I would sign up for her class.
She tends to screw up a lot and tells you how it is doesn't really elaborate. I liked math before i took a class with her.
VERY HARD!!! NOT FORGIVING AT ALL, NOT NICE AT ALL.
If you read this now............get out of her class! She has no mercy and grades soooo strict. Also, her homework must be straight edges, one-sided (in a math class), stapled..........in other words, PERFECT. I withdrew because she advised me to. She still gets paid for it I guess, right? =( boo to this teacher. I'll never take her again
DO NOT TAKE!!! I took this class and by the grace of god i passed and i no lie worked so HARD to get a C. What bugged me is she even knew how extra hard I was working and didn't even consider that in her grading. I guess determination has nothing to do with your grade but even most teachers take that into consideration somewhat
She is a really caring teacher. She wont collect homework but the people who don't do well are the ones who don't do it. She makes you work hard but it's worth it in the end.
She expects a lot out of you, but if you show her you care, if you do care, she will notice and it will help you in the end. Do the homework, don't try to cram for her tests. Go in and ask her for help, she will appreciate it and she is also very helpful.
DO NOT TAKE HER. SHE IS UNFAIR AND COULD CARE LESS ABOUT HER STUDENTS. SHE ADVISES STUDENTS TO DROP ALL THE TIME. AVOID NO MATTER THE CASE. WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME.
If you had a hard time with this professor, GET OUT OF COLLEGE. She did every thing expected from a prof at this level. The class is a little challenging, but all you have to do is attend class and do your homework and you'll be fine. I went to her all the time for help and she always took the time to explain exactly how to do it to me.
Worst teacher ever! Is very picky and she doesn't care about her students at all. Very hard class which she does not explain well at all.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR AT ANY COST!!! Terrible professor! Doesn't explain things clearly, doesn't care about students at all, I'm pregnant and she failed me 2 months into the semester without even giving me a chance. Doesn't make any exceptions!! Also makes you feel very stupid if you don't know the answers. IF YOU TAKE THIS PROF, YOU WILL FAIL
Difficult class and though attendance is not mandatory, if you miss a class it will ultimately affect your grade. The material is tough, but Dr. Buls provides clear and relevant lectures that with the aid of her office hours and the tutor lab should result in a good understanding of the material. Prepare to put a lot of effort in this class.
Very horrible professor. Very picky, hard grader, horrible tests. do not take her, she is that bad.
I am good at math but this class was very difficult! Most of the students in my class had failed it once before. She is very strict with her grading and expects alot! A ton of homework through text and web. Probably better if you take with someone else.
Can be helpful if you have questions but thats about it. She grades ridiculously hard, and its so much work for a 3 credit class, can be overwhelming at times. If your outstanding at math take her, but if not i would recommend someone else.
This teacher is very hard. She is helpful but is very picky on everything. If you don't do things her way you will fail. This class was over the top for work load for a 3 credit 100 level course. I would recommend that you don't take this teacher.
This class was pretty difficult, and she is SUPER picky about everything, but she is always willing to help.
really good prof. she just has hard tests, you need to make sure to do really well on the problem sets, if you do good on those and do well on the mathxl you should be sitting at least in a pretty good spot, the finance part was easy some of the other stuff can be pretty hard, she is really willing to help and wants you to pass
She is willing to teach 5 days a week if you will put in the work. Surprise 5-minute quizzes suck, but she will drive important points home and make sure you remember them, which makes subsequent lessons easier to understand. Work hard, she cares about her students!
she is way to crital when grading assignments. She is poor teacher who is unclear about coarse material. She would make a good kindergarden teacher.
Dont do it
DONT TAKE HER FOR REAL
evil.
The hardest grader of unimportant material ever. Will penalize you bigtime for formatting your answers wrong, even if you've demonstrated that you know the material.
Horrible professor. Unless you are perfect I wouldnt expect to get a good grade. Is very strict and picky when it comes to grading the most pointless material. Calls students out in the middle of class is they aren't doing well. Worst teacher I've ever had in my entire career, she is pure evil and a horrible person all around.
She teaches well in lectures and drives the points home. However she is a Natzi of a grader and nit picks the most pointless things. She gives you homework, problem sets and web assign which averages 3-6 hours of homework a night. She calls students out in class and has surprise quizes. DON'T TAKE HER, SHE IS THE WORST MATH TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD.
It hasn't been a week and already people are dropping. I understand what she is trying to do, though. She wants students to be able to do homework a way that has them understand the material. However, she teaches in a way that is a different style than what most people are used to. All I can say is work hard. Oh and she does play favorties.
Don't take classes with her! She is a nice but obtaining a passing grade is not easy to do. Tests are sometimes too long and she does put hard problems on the tests. Has pop-quiz's. Problem sets are very difficult, don't expect a perfect on any of them...these will destroy your grade!!! She is VERY picky on grading and will deduct u for everything!
Very picky teacher. DO NOT TAKE HER! unless you know the materials very well. Massive hw, Problem sets, MATHXL, textbook hw. No one could comprehend the materials because of her teaching style. Calls out students which is unnecessary. Half of the class withdrew, we all failed. Spring 2011.
Honestly, if your looking to fail a class no matter what, this is the class. She has no heart and is unrelenting. I had a funeral to go and she decided an f on quizzes and test would be a sufficient way to pay up. Everyone in my class is failing except for one. She tells us to go to tutor and then when we get help from them she says it is all wrong
I consider myself pretty smart, all A's and few B's. I work so hard too and still failed. out of her 2 classes of pre calc, maybe 2 will pass, 75% of students withdrew or just stopped going. The amount of hw assigned is redic and holds no weight with your grade.honestly, dont take her bcz you will hate your whole semester!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
very strict teacher. expects a lot out of us. Her grading is not good. You can lose points for getting the right answer. Text book and math XL are used for hw. Test are rather hard. doesnt give you enough time for quizzes either. Take her if you want a real challenge. Perfection is the only way to do well.
If you take her class, expect a lot of work but it's very worth it. You learn a ton! Her MATH115 class is the class to take to prepare yourself for MATH221.
If you plan on taking MATH221, take Dr. Buls' MATH115. It is a lot of work but it's totally worth it! I feel well prepared for calculus =)
She's strict in grading, but she definitely knows what she's talking about. If you get her, don't fight her - just adapt to how she does things, and you'll get a good grade in her class. You will definitely learn a lot from her class.
I took both her 115 and 221, and plan to take her for 222. She is amazing. Best teaching style. She actually explains things, so you don't just know how to do the work, you know why. As long as you make it to class ever day and show her you're trying, you will pass. She actually cares about the students. If you want to actually learn, take her.
While Dr. Buls knows her material, she is completely unforgiving and relentless in the amount of homework she gives out in a class. If you decide to drop, expect unprofessional behavior from this woman as she decides to talk down to you and use your major against you. SERIOUSLY reconsider taking this woman as a teacher.
She is completely relentless the way she "teaches". she'll go through notes at mach 1, assign more HW that you could possibly do in a night & she modifies instructions for book work so the book doesn't actually help you compensate for her lack of teaching. everyone told me to avoid her but I did. I would delay graduation a year to a avoid her class
YOU WILL REGRET THIS TEACHER NOTHING OTHER TO SAY...
Worst teacher on the history of my life. Lots of homework and assignments. She has her own problem sets, textbook homework and online mathxl assignments. She thinks as if we have just 5 credits the whole semester and should only work on her subject.
She is a kind lady just really strict when it comes to grading. She also goes through the materiel much faster than any other math professor. If you take her be prepared to be rushed with lots of homework and really hard problem sets.
There was more memorization in class than learning. Insane amount of homework each week and tests that were unable to be completed in a reasonable time. Half the class dropped. She told a friend of mine that it "wasn't her problem" he couldnt understand the material and was overall very rude to those doing poorly in class when they asked for help.
I ended up dropping this class. shirley is condescending and awful. I was an intended math major with a background in precalc and she told me i belonged in college algebra. I dropped the class and changed my major. don't take class with her. take it with professor latterell in the fall.
Terrible teacher... She doesn't explain anything, homework and test are crazy hard. Even if you study a ton it is hard to pass. more than half our class dropped.
Worst teacher i have ever had... If you are an incoming freshman, get a different teacher. This is not a joke. she is awful, no help, and EXTREMELY RUDE.
Ruthless is about all I can say. Math major? Take her. Anything else? Don't even consider her.
Buls in an average professor. If you can understand the lectures and the materials given in class, it is easy to pass the tests. Assignments and problem sets are given very frequently with not so relaxing deadlines. I must say she is a good grader. If you are out of good professors, buls can be your second choice.
Shirley gives a ton of homework, but is still a good professor. You'll have to put in a lot of effort, but if you do she will notice it. Goes over tougher homework questions in class after you hand them in, which is really helpful. You will master the subject if you do everything she assigns. Only complaint is being called on in class daily.
This was the worst class I've ever taken. Half the class dropped, I tried to stick it out and had to withdraw. I got points taken off for not removing the edges of my notebook paper or writing neat and orderly. DO NOT TAKE.
SCSU Students will benefit when she retires. I went against the reviews and took this class with her (no other options). I'm an A math student and would have been happy with a C, but I had to withdraw from the course 1/2 way through. She only does examples that are found in the book and then assigns super hard problems. BEWARE! Not helpful at all.
DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HER CLASSES. I have always been an A student in math classes and I had to drop halfway through her joke of a class. Doesnt explain lessons well at all and the multiple problem sets a week will make you want to drop out
She is an understanding and thoughtful teacher. If you are actually a 'good' student who didn't just get by in high school you'll be fine. Yes, she does assign a lot of homework and yes, she may seem strict, but she is a fairly good teacher. She could, however be better elaborating on concepts. Do all the work and you will pass. I got an A.
just in one word never take her class even its the last choice. its good to take on next semester with other good professor.
She is the toughest grader i have ever had for a professor. Insane amount of homework also, the only thing i find admirable about her is her willingness to check up on students.
She gives great feedback and will grade assignments accurately. She is a strict professor when it comes to homework and that's a good thing because it forces you to actually get a fundamental understanding of the concepts instead of a general idea.
She is very old schooled, gives a ton of homework making it very hard to stay up to speed. It is a class that meets everyday, so be prepared to always be there. Grades harshly on everything. She is available to meet outside of class often, but didn't usually help.
Awesome professor. She made me love math. She's a tough but clear grader. She's very encouraging but doesn't put up with people who don't try. I would absolutely take a class from her again, actually makes me disappointed that I don't need any more math for my major.
Great teacher, tough material. She is passionate about really teaching the material.
Really amazing professor! Professor Buls is one of my favorite teachers. She really likes it when you actually try, and if you don't try, your grades will suffer. She is really kind and was fun to have. Totally recommend!
she gives a lot of homework and have a really bad grading system
She is the worst professor i have ever had and ive had bad ones. Shes mean, and she genuinely wants you to fail. Her grading method is terrible and u will get docked for the smallest mistake in ur work. its next to impossible to pass. shes a very unkind person and a terrible professor. avoid at all costs.
I had Shirley for both Calc 1 and 2 (I didnt have any other options for Calc 2 when I signed up). She is very good at teaching the material, but you best be ready to work. She is very old fashioned and super strict with homework. The tests can also tend to be on the hard side. This is the hardest I have ever had to work for a C in my life!!
Dr Buls, is not the professor for everyone. She gives LOTS of homework. Her test are also quite difficult, but she loosens up on the grading for tests. She grades the homework quite strictly so you must pay attention in class and not miss so you know how to write up the homework. However, she is one of the best professors ive had at explaining math
Don't take her classes if you don't like to be called and be put on the spotlight. She assigns lots of homework. She knows her stuff but she not really good at explaining. Look fellow student just don't take this class, it's not worth the C
Shirley seems like a sweet lady but as a professor i could not stand her. I came in 2min late to class one time and ever since then she's always called me out in class and put me on the spot. She docs points off test for the smallest reasons and over half of my class failed or withdrew. I dont reccomend her at ALL.
Mrs. Buls is very strict and makes you do things her way. I had previous experience with calculus and thought I would do well, but the way she does things just never made sense to me, no matter how many questions I asked. She does things the hard way and grades very tough. Worst math teacher I've ever had.
she moves pretty fast. shes willing to explain what she did if you just ask though.
really harsh grader. literally took 5pts off of my assign. because my staple was in the wrong spot. moves way too fast. shes already at the end of the problem while youre still writing the beginning equation. try to get a different prof.
Just like what most people is saying here, she gives way to many home works, she mark down points unnecessary especially if you're doing things her way.
During the cover 19 pandemic, this teacher seemed to not care that you are struggling. My D2L was down and she seemed not to care. I emailed the dean and nothing happened. I struggled and continued to struggle and gave up on asking her for help. It's kinda like getting taught by a robot. I will not be attending St. Cloud after taking her class.
Dr. Buls is extremely organized, that was especially helpful during COVID. Her requirements for assignments are specific but clearly stated. She does give a lot of homework but she is a very fair grader, and legitimately cares that you learn. If you are willing to work hard you will be successful in her class. Id give her 4.5 stars if I could.
Buls is a good teacher but makes you work for it. She gives lots of homework. You learn the material well but you have to put in the work. She is also a very picky grader and you have to do everything how she wants.
good god if you have to take her i strongly recommend switch SCHOOLS entirely. by far the worst professor i have had my entire college career. if you don't do it her way exactly, you're screwed. if you put the staple in the wrong spot, you get docked points. avoid her at all costs. worst teacher i've ever witnessed.
I have to take this class to get to calculus and she was the only professor for pre-calc. She is strict when it comes to exams, deadlines of homework and GHW. If you work hard, you can survive but if you don't work then she would tell you to drop it. Her lectures aren't great and I would rather watch YouTube videos because they make more sense.
Absolutely the worst mathematics teach I've ever had. I usually get A's in my math classes but with Shirley, I struggled to even get a C. She assigns heavy amounts of homework but she grades very harshly, even if I get the answer for problems right, I will still get like 5-10 points deducted because I didn't solve the problem the way she wants.
Expect a lot of graded homework 2 a week if not more and mlm homework which are due literally the next day. She assigned GHW and lecture videos during spring break!! Shes a very harsh grader so make sure you watch her lecture videos. Does not drop any low score. Shes very old school so expect to spend your whole semester consumed by her class.
Buls teaching made it very difficult for me to learn any of her material. The work load is ridiculous which just turns into meeting deadlines instead of actually learning. Homework was due the next day at 9am & she assigned 12 a week! She doesnt teach. Just hours of lecture videos and her harsh grading technique with no compassion for her students
