She basically reads the book, so keep it handy!
Her lectures come straight from the book. You really don't even need to show up, just read the book. She's a very nice person and will answer eventhe dumbest question without making you feel stupid.
Lecture style is not interesting; she basically reads the book. However, very sharp in chemistry and is willing to help you out. I wouldn't say that you would get a clear, helpful solution from her but u will get 100% effort. =)
Good teacher, but hard! Best time to take is in the summer! never have to put lab away and exams are easier! good professor! good luck!
very helpful and just awesome teacher! her test is not that hard but very, very long. Her lectures are identical to the book. just read it beforehand so you won't have to write every notes down and actually memorize something during lectures.
I don't see what's so great about her. All she does is lecture directly out of the book, and spends very little time explaining the stuff so you can understand. The only good thing about her is that she is really friendly and enthusiastic about chemistry.
awesome attitude! very down to earth and nice. lectures are not helpful if you dont read the chapter ahead of time. Exams are reasonable, but very long. know your stuff well so that you can do it fast enough on exams; otherwise you're screwed.
good teacher!
She's very book oriented, everything she teaches comes straight to the book. Fast lecture, it hurts sometimes because she blasts through it. She's always available for questions and happily explains everything that you don't understand.
She iz the worse chem teacher ever. She grades hard on tests, quizzes and lab. You'll regret if you take her. Her lecture is fast which is not helpful. I think she should retire. Seems a lil too old to be still teaching. :/
I totally agree with the last person. I think she is horrible. She spends very little time helping you out when you need help. Her tests are very unreasonable, and only cater to the people who already know chemistry. Her labs are a whole other story.
She's a very nice teacher, friendly and really down to earth. Her lectures suck though. She speeds through the lecture and you barely have enough time to copy it down. She purposely makes her test so that you can't finish it. She barely explains the problems she does. Our class average was a 54%...
Her exams were so hard and tough...relly hard to get an A. BUt no matter how hard it is, i love her...a great teacher.
Great professor. She's always available for help. The tests are pretty hard, but she does curve.
What these people are talking about? I had Dr, G for 185 and got a "B". I worked hard I'm but you do in Chem, it's a hard class. But as for people complaining about her teaching skills. I believe she is the best I ever had. 54% I believe is a lie, 67% is more the truth. No one cares like Dr G
her tests are tricky. she even said so herself. supposedly those who can do tricky problems are "A students"... my suggestion is to do all the homework problems, twice. cheers.
best prof. i had in my life. very friendly, nice, and helpful. just go see her during office hour and she will answer any question friendly. tests are hard, but they are very similar to hw probs. i think those ppl down here who complain about her never did any hw, cuz she never collects^^
Great teacher. Her lectures are out of the book but she'll answer any question if you ask. Tests are just like the homework so just do that and you'll be fine. People have trouble but this is Chem, you can't just wing it and get an A. If you put the effort forward its not too hard or impossible to get an A. Dr.G is one of the best teachers I've had
She's a great teacher, but some of the former students have said that she may come off like she's willing to help with certain problems or issues regarding grades but never comes through. Never take anything she says at face value. You may assume she will consider to do what she says but don't be fooled. She can be really disappointing!!! She's wo
In my opinion, the greatest disappointment about her is about her lecture. It is extremely unhelpful if you don't read carefully the book ahead. Many people complain about that but she never change. Her test is unreasonable long and quite a tricky. itis good if you have her exams last class to practice. She is friendly and nice doctor.
Granted, she's extremely nice and easy to talk to- however, this class is ridiculous. She lectures so fast you can't talk decent notes, her tests are so long you can't finish, and the test content was much more difficult than is reasonable. I worked hard to get an A in 180. I worked just as hard, if not harder, to get a C in this class.
Nice professor but super duper difficult in her exams, Be ready to work hard if you don't work hard enough (reading book and do homework many times),C or even D is very possible. A will be a dream in her class. Her final was much harder than her exams,we didn't know what to study because she told us to study everything from the beginning. How Sweat!
very nice but hard prof. you must work very very very hard to get an A. tests are extremely long.
If you're not on top of stuff, you'll fall behind REALLY fast. TAKE NOTES! DON'T SLEEP! - i made that mistake, and i ended up with a C! Great person, but you must work hard to earn your grade.
Wow, what can I say? This class is HARD CORE! Begin studying your butt off starting the 1ST DAY! Im serious. The tests are very long and difficult. I ate, slept, dreamed, and lived chemistry to get my grade. However, she is very helpful and nice.
She is a book-studying.
She tried to teach us everything from the book, so we didn't know what to focus on?>
She is really great teacher in lecture but sometimes could be bored, lab is okie....but tests are hard sometimes of course it's always hard if u don't study and prepare for it......and don't put anything she said personally sometimes she can be harsh.....
She's all over the place in lecture, her tests Q? aren't covered in Lecture or Hmwrk. She doesn't hand a outline out for tests & when it comes to asking for help, she seems irritated that she would have to help you figure out a problem. Other students have asked me if I am as confused as they are,YES & I was comfortable with Chem. before this class
Best general chemistry professor in California. Has an easy going style in lab and lecture. Guaranteed an A on exams if you do every problem in the back of each chapter.
I don't know who tinks this is an easy class or thinks she is helpful, so un-true., she's all over the place and difficult, if you need help forget about it, if you aren't an A student she doesn't care about giving you help, she is a hands off Professor, your on your own.
I had Gonzales for a whole year. Best teacher ever. I don't know what to say but if you KNOW your chemistry, this should be an easy A. Make sure you study the CONCEPTS and know chemistry. All you guys that think chemistry is just pick an equation and use a calculator, you will do bad. Plus, if you're not a bio major, dont take this class.
All i have to say is... GOOD LUCK!!... you'll need it
This is the most DIFFICULT chem teacher I ever took.... Test are not based on anything - they are long and are some material are not covered in lecture or book - mostly concepts that are not even the most important aspect in the chapters. Very disorganized and is intimidating- ADVICE - Take it somewhere else ~ SUPER DIFFICULT unless your a genius
overall an ok professor but teaching style is poor. She makes chemistry harder than it is and hard exams. even if you knew how to do problens and calculations, on the exams she makes it confusing. take at your own risk
It a self learning class. She teaches really fast and doesn't have good teaching skills, but if you do the hw,read the book very throughly and do the book examples, you will be fine because her tests come from hw and book material. Her tests are very long but not hard to answer if you read the book and do the hw. Study really hard, you will need it.
tests are 5 pages long and most people dont finish, guaranteed C in her class but if your going to medical school a C will not do it for a science class, The only way to get an A in her class is if you have her old tests - between 1-13 people have them in my class and theyre the only ones getting A's-NOT FAIR. Also she gives some students advantage
Nice person. At the beginning she might not seem approachable, but once you talk to her she is nice. However, if you want an easy A or B or if you are not good in chem, take it somewhere else because exams seem designed for a PhD level and they are very long. You can get a Guaranteed C, but it is almost impossible to get an A or B in her class.
tests are way too long but willing to help and very savy. if u study previous exams. a lot easier when u are taking exams
Fun, cool person... HORRIBLE TEACHER! her lectures have NO structure, examples all from book, exams don't follow lecture. I busted my a$$ to get a B when up until this semester I had gotten straight A's in all my science classes. She's a BEAST! If you have to take her... make it your only science class! Should've been 10 units instead of 5!!
First of all you've got teachers and facilitators, she's not a teacher. She can't lecture, she has no organization... in lab she's in the back downloading music from iTunes. She's a joke. Believe me, if you care about learning or your grade stray far from her or you'll ruin your academic goals... Oh and if you know ur ish, you'll still bomb !!!
If u have a knack for chemistry she shouldn't be difficult. You must have good study skills b4 entering the class, read book prior, do hw problems. Has a tendency towards favorites. She goes quickly during lec, does problems in lecture, but very messy. Didn't enjoy her.
A very hard teacher. good in Lab, but lecture could use improvement
Worst teacher ever. Can't even petition people in right. Goes over time so many times. Not pleasant to look at. Low, growling, manly voice. Extremely annoying. I'm so glad I dropped. SO GLAD.
The most horrible teacher I've ever had. Don't ever take her class; she will ruin your entire dream of being a-high-GPA student. Her tests are extremely difficult, not following her lecture at all, being long and complicated, you not having enough time to finish them. You better take other teacher for chem; otherwise, you will regret
shes an intresting little lady. she chooses favorites so get on her good side. also make sure you get a copy of the tests from the last semester they will help since her tests dont change. just get on her good side. lab is chill
Read the book before you go to lecture and do problems as well. Lecture is completely useless unless you have a general understanding beforehand, which defeats the purpose of lecture. Nice lady. Terrible teacher. Don't take this class unless you can teach yourself chemistry (coming from an A student)
3words to describe her:OMG. Nice person BUT SHE JUST NOT MEANT TO BE A TEACHER.Lectures are extremely confusing.Exams are long and tricky. TEXTBOOK is a MUST, without the textbook u will be doomed. Get old tests and study words by words, they are exactly the same but since that u dont understand the material u are DEAD when FINAL comes around.
She's horrible lecturer, but a pleasant person. She's not meant to be a teacher. Someone needs to get her fired.
she is a nice person, but a disaster in teaching.she is lack of teaching method.seriously, don't take her class unless you have no choice.she will ruin your dream of high-GPA.her exams are extremely long and tricky.she has quiz every class meeting.her lecture is useless.she does have grade curve,it's good only a whole class is same level.
She's very nice but not very helpful if you need to understand Chemistry. She rushes through lecture and she doesn't explain much in lab, just sits behind her computer all the time. She has very sloppy writing and her notes are all over the place so it's hard to take notes. If possible, don't take her. You won't understand much in here.
leave your future goals behind. actually just throw it away and be ready to change majors. her notes are copied and pasted from the book. her tests are customized and nothing like the book. I don't care if you love chemistry or you are a genious. be ready to write a letter to the dean to hire a professor with a better curriculum.
She is the nicest person i have ever met. The secret to passing her class is reading the book before lectures. people expect her to explain every detail in the chapter, thats why they dont like her. i recomend taking her because she prepares you for a university class.
The ONLY way to do well is to have previous tests, because she doesn't test from lecture or lab material. She is unwilling to give extra help, and gets annoyed if you ask too many questions. I actually like chemistry, but she made it a horrible experience.
Dr. G is the nicest, coolest lady you'll meet. Her lectures require you familiarize yourself with the material before hand and her exams are quite difficult. Getting an A requires incredible amounts of work, however getting a B or C is the same as in any other class. Definitely take her for lab, but only for lecture if you're willing to work hard.
Nice Professor. Very helpful and does care so much for her students. Recommend it for summer, that's when she's easy since her exams are similar to her hw problems she assigns. Do the hw, ask questions, READ the book word for word and you're good to go! Also has easy quizzes that'll raise your grade 1 whole letter!
If you read the book before class and review the little sections for quizzes it's as easy as gen chem can get. She tells you which HW problems look like her test questions and her quizzes are pretty much the easy examples from the book. It requires a ton of time, but if you do all the work it's not so bad. She curves grades.
People here complain that she'll ruin your "dream of a high GPA." This dream can only really be achieved with LOTS of hard work (which is a must for this class). I got an easy A+ in her 185 class and the best advice i can give to anyone taking it is to read the chapter BEFORE coming to lecture or you wont understand ANYTHING! shes also very helpful
Lecture is worthless without first reading the chapter and doing some example problems. Quizzes are easy with some preparation and become your lifeline. Tests are horrifying without doing your own homework (none assigned). Lab is nice, but stressful if you miss one or two (self-paced, you'll fall behind). This teacher is hard, but you'll KNOW Chem.
Dr. G is really nice. I rarely come to lectures cuz really..I fall alseep most of the times. Read the books, do homeworks, and come to labs often otherwise you're gonna suffer at the end of semester. Ask her anything you confuse about, she'll explain it to you.TAKE HER! you wil learn a lots. n HARD WORK required!
To put it simply, DO NOT TAKE HER unless you like walking through hell and back. I swear, I would spend hours at starbucks studying and I still just got a C. The only way I passed was because I had her tests from a previous semester. She's pretty funny but she makes everything harder then it really is. Stay away unless you want to work super hard
Dr. G is awesome. Sure she's tough, but if you have an easy chem class then you aren't really learning. I would totally take another class with her.
Dr. G is VERY FAIR. She works with you on due dates and she let us retake a test. she gave extra credit. I ended up with a B in the class but honestly didn't put the work needed in order to get an A. She is the best for lab. Always joking around and we were barely on task because my lab group had too much fun!
Dr G is extremely cool. In order to do well in the class you MUST read the chapters before lecture. I can't stress this enough. Her lab is self-paced and she is extremely funny. I got an A in 180 and am taking 185 with her right now, working hard to get an A. Put in the work, listen to instructions and you WILL get the grade you deserve. Premed A+
Expect a real challenge. Most of the learning I did on my own. She will not "hold your hand" like other teachers do. Most of your grade is from tests and quizzes. A few easy quizzes a good number of hard ones. Harder tests, questions on the tests are like the really hard H.W. problems. Super hard midterm and final.
There are four exams, a midterm, a lecture final, a lab final, and apprx. 18 quizes. Every week there was some sort of test. I didn't have time to really learn the material I was too busy trying to cram for all the tests. In lecture she only goes over the examples in the book. Its not much help. I would take someone else.
Expect a challenge with Dr. G. Attending class not mandatory, just lectures & does examples straight from book. Read ahead & understand material if you do go to lecture or you'll be lost. Take for lab, is awesome. Exams difficult but try & study with groups and use old exams (very useful & most of time uses old problems). Diff. prof but very fair!
she needs to spend more time teaching, and less time blowing through calculations for an hour.
Her lectures are hard to follow . Most of the time ud find urself fall aslepp before u know it. Her tests are average, not too hard not too easy but u gotta really understand the materials. Overall not an easy A but she does try to boost up ur grades as as much as possible so thats really nice of her :D
I don't get why people complain about Dr. Gonzales. She's very knowledgeable and funny at times. It's true that her lectures are hard to follow because it's so disorganized and she goes over so fast, but she curves very generously. Other chem classes are way harder than her. Be aware!
Dr. G's class will be very difficult if you don't work hard. Read ahead before going to lectures, and DO the optional homework problems or the tests will be a nightmare. She's hilarious and actually cares about her students, and also curves very generously. Be prepared to put in large amounts of time for this class, but she's a good teacher overall
Her lectures are difficult to follow, especially since she does not have any online posted nor powerpoint. They are hand written. She assigns homework, but are not mandatory. No solution manual on the textbook, so you'll have to check with the teacher's manaul. In lab, all she does is play farmville.
her class is impossible. you realize chemistry is impossible to self teach from the book, but that is really the only option you have...impossible to get an A. easy to get a C.
Cool and honest instructor. Read (not skim) the text, do some problems and you'll be fine (the midterm and the final aren't that bad). Labs are self-paced. :)
Good Things:1.Knowledgeable 2.Very helpful3.Explain things clear.Drawbacks:1.No study guide for exams 2.Exams are very long given in short time 3.No extra credit4.Lecture very fast (if you don't read book ahead, you will not understand what she is saying 5.Quizzes are tricky. An A is not impossible though, but you have to work VERY HARD to earn it
Reading textbook b4 class in mandatory if you want to understand half a thing she says in class, and she slides thru lectures so fast that we don't have time to write down but take photos of her notes. Exams are long and impossible to finish but she'll curve them. Labs are mostly self-taught. Not recommended if u look 4 easy teacher.
Trust me, shes about as hard as hard gets. Lol. But if you're premed, you better take her class and get an A.
Her lecture is fairly fast paced. I would recommend reading the textbook before class and just follow along with her instead of taking notes. She grades generously and is fun to have for lab. Shes super funny :D
she's not very bad but her teaching style requires you to fully understand the material before lectures. One thing i really hate about her is that she's very unorganized, especially with quizzes and grading. id recommend reading textbook before lectures and borrowing old exams from ur mates!
Dr.G is my favorite. Sure she is hard but if you read book prior to class and do hw and do the pre-lab reading there is NO EXCUSE for not getting an A in her class. She truly prepares you for your next level. The exam is NOT hard, but LONG. You have to do all the hw and maybe sth extra to do fast in exam. I took her for chem 180 and now for 185
I took Dr. G for both 180 and 185 this past academic year and earned an A both semesters. Her tests are kind of challenging and her quizzes are very easy. Lab is easy as well if you were careful. Overall, she is a sweet lady who genuinely cares for her students and does everything she can to help clarify concepts. Homework is also a must.
Had Dr. G for 1 year of Gen Chem and got A for both 180-185. I took pictures of her lecture and used it to do hw. Take her labs. Short answers in the exams required understanding of the material. Practice a wide range of calculation problems in the hw
Took Dr. Gonzalez for lecture. Her tests are long and require that you know and understand the material fully in order to complete in the limited time you have. Quizzes are usually easy, except a few. Hard to keep up with her lecture, if you write out your notes by hand. She's funny and normally really chill, though.
Self-taught class with very fast-paced lectures, everyone just takes pictures of her slides. Dr. G is really cool though, go to office hours and talk to her and she is very helpful.
I love Dr.G. Extremely knowledgeable, kind, and helpful. She collects few Hw assignment her labs are pretty easy and she doesnt take too many points off if u did something wrong. Her quizzes are relatively easy. HOWEVER, her tests are HARD! Basically if you take any time to stop and think you wont finish the test, you gotta be fast on the exams.
Really good lab teacher. Will walk you through it step-by-step if you don't get it. Always a heads up on what will be on the quizzes. However, her tests are brutal. I haven't seen anyone actually finish one. Basically, you can't stop to think about any of the problems. They have to come automatically to you.
She is one of the most intimidating teacher's. She is brilliant but has a hard time of explaining things to students. Take her for lab and get on her good side, once you start talking to her she opens up and is very funny and caring. Tests are 99% math with very few fill in the blank conceptual questions. Tests are hard but fair. An A is attainable
First of all, this class is very easy to get an A, if you have previous exam and do homework problems in text book. 80% of problems in exams are exactly the same as previous exam and 15 % from the text book. I got all A's in lecture exams. How can you miss questions that are the exact same lol. Final multiple choice was very hard, but I still got A
HORRIBLE CLASS!!! Don't take this if you want to keep your gpa high. Even if you study your ass off unless you have the previous exams ur screwed!! I didn't have any of them and ended up with a C. Others that had them got A's. I wish I had the balls to ask them for a copy :(
Crappy professor, lectures are boring. Easy class if you study everyday. The professor is nice, but JC some people just can't teach. She's very helpful one on one though. You have to be self-motivated for this course. I recommend a study group and just keep working through problems. If you do that you're guaranteed an A.
My nightmare aaaaaaaaa
I'm taking Dr. G right now and I love her to death as a person. She is super funny and easy to get along with. But as a teacher, she is brutal. Her lectures make things more complicated than they should be and she just is not good at explaining things. Her lab isn't bad though, shes laid back. Tests are hard, make sure you find old copies.
Smart lady, but cannot teach. Lectures are hard to follow. TOO MANY TESTS. 4 exams, and a 2 part final. EXAMS ARE HARD HARD HARD. Laux only had 3 exams, including the final. Expect a quiz each week. Take lab with her, she's chill. Nice sense of humor. Would not take this class again if you paid me.
So many tests. 4 unit tests worth 125 points each depending on the curve. Part 1 of the final worth 125 points. Part 2 of the final worth another 125 points. 6 full length tests!!! You also have about 10 quizzes. So every week you either have a test or a quiz.
Nice and funny lady, but a horrific teacher. Literally just uses overheads of what is exactly in the book. Her tests are impossible unless you have old versions to study off of. The final is ridiculously hard. I seriously would not recommend her to anyone. I have never taught myself so much in a class before. Not clear when helping you either.
Horrible lecturer. Doesn't assign homework. Harsh grader. I am personally a student who learns primarily through lectures but since she goes too fast to even take notes I felt that I wasn't retaining any of the info by just listening so I ended up self studying for the entire course. She's a funny and nice lady but I would not take again!!!
Doesn't really update grades wlab scores along the way&quizzes kind of hold your grade. Tests are hard so find old copies are found to study off of. Questions are taken similarly from hw in the book so do them! Extra cred is given and only counts if you are in the lecture for that day. We only had 2-3 extra cred prob. She rarely curved. Good luck!
Just don't. Dr. G is a good lady and will answer your questions that you have, but her lectures are awful and her tests are nearly impossible (unless you have the old tests). This class is not worth taking. You'll end up just memorizing the answers to prior tests to get through the course which isn't much of an education...
Test are easy. Should read the book before going to class. easy test. hilarious teacher
Dr. G is so nice! She is really laid back and always there for you. I like that she does things old school, no Pearson codes, just old fashioned do the homework if you want to and show up and take the test. I took her 130 as a refresher for Chem. her teaching is a little confusing so having the book with you during lectures is a must!
Terrible lectures. She never tells you what she is lecturing on, she just starts doing problems in terrible hand writing. I almost never went to class. Tests are very hard get old tests from previous years almost same thing. Good lab teacher. She is very nice and will help you if you ask for it just not in lectures.
I dont understand where all these bad reviews come from and I'm suspicious if these people at least tried to do anything in class. Dr. Gonzales is a kind and fair professor and her lecture material goes well with self-study of the book. Lab work is inspiring and quiz/test system is very clear. Read chapters, do all hw problems and get A on her test
I failed this class and I still think she's amazing. Tests are hard, you have to know the material well to finish in time, and don't skip class, the lectures are helpful for what types of problems to expect, she'll often tell you too. Lectures are fast but you can take photos if you need. Very smart, caring, and approachable, use her office hours!
Teacher is very nice in lecture and in lab, but tests are very heavy. You need to be very QUICK to get an A. She gives students back their tests, which she re-uses for her class next semester again and again. One friend got A in her class by only studying her old tests even though he failed calculus and chemistry 180 once. Manage to get old tests!
Good person, worst professor ever. No learning aids; no powerpoints, handouts, nothing. Her lectures are on crap projectors that are difficult to read and she just goes through without explaining. Tests are long and do not reflect her teaching. You will not learn or have a good foundation for future chem classes Do not take her. You will regret it.
Her lectures don't add up, she goes by really fast. She makes her own tests which are hard as hell; like never before seen. Do yourself a favor and don't register for this class. Good Lady with a winning personality, but that won't make you pass her class. good luck chem students at OCC.
I loved her. She is so knowledgeable. If you do the hw on the book and take pic from her lectures, you'll get an A.
Awesome personality, lets you stay after for labs, but in lecture, goes by super fast. She just provides multiple examples. No homework except for 2 assignments. Her tests look short, but are actually super long if you don't know the general formulas off the top of your head. So, do the homework. She gives extra credit, but only if you're caught up
Chem 180- Overall, she's not horrible, her curves are pretty high. She isn't a very good teacher, her lecture isn't synonymous with her tests, and her tests are so dense, the average student can't finish them. She stops keeping up with grades on canvas halfway through the semester so you won't know where you stand. If you're not an expert, avoid.
Lectures are horrible and she goes way too fast. Nothing is explained in depth, you'll need to read the book and watch videos to understand any of the material. Her quizzes weren't so bad. but the exams are a nightmare. If you don't have her old exams good luck getting an A because it's impossible. She's an amazing person but horrible chem prof.
Dr. G is one of the most caring, and down to earth professor I have ever had. But you have to be able to self teach to do well in her class, be ready to do all the homework and example problems from the book. Her lecture most likely will not be helpful at all, its extremely fast paced and its just examples are straight from the book. Major curve
Dr. G is a good person and a pretty good professor. She warms up to her students. Her lab is great because she lets you talk to other students if you're confused but her lectures are a little slow (I fell asleep a few times). She's a pretty fair grader and sometimes offers extra credit. No homework, lots of quizzes, hard tests. Would recommend.
I took Dr. G for Chem 180, 185, and 185 lab. Her lectures are very hard to follow because she uses and overhead projector and writes everything by hand, and puts nothing online. Her tests are difficult, but she is a fair grader and offers a lot of partial points. Would take any class she teaches. You can tell she cares about the subject & students
CHEM180 has got to be the hardest class I've taken. Dr. Gonzales is very old fashioned and uses a projector for her lectures. The lectures are disorganized and confusing. Her exams were incredibly difficult and I felt unprepared for nearly all of them. If you want to get an A in this class, I would not suggest taking Dr. Gonzales
I took her chem 180 and 185 class, she is good teacher, she always gives you partial credit, but her exam sometimes have a trick, but don't worry, she will curves your grade, do homework and you will get a high grade
Took her for Chem 180 and 185. Her lectures go by so quickly and she only brushes over topics, so the only way to keep up is to read beforehand. Do the assigned HW given in the syllabus because the test problems are very similar. Understand the theory behind concepts. She's chill in lab.
End up first W with this class. Maybe her teaching style was just not suitable for me! The lab is super easy, but the lecture exam is hell!!!!!!
Dr.G is literally one of the top 3 worst professors I have ever experienced. She uses overheads still for lectures, so imagine how her lectures are during covid. She doesn't lecture, but rather reads off the powerpoint. She has you take quizzes online and you type in the formulas as opposed to writing them out. Hope she's not hired again.
Shes very smart dont get me wrong, but cannot teach at all. She lectures very quickly using Elmo projectors and pre-written sheets she illegibly writes on. Started with 140 people ended with 40. That says something. Labs are easy but lecture exams were ridiculous. She doesnt seem to have any real pattern or plan so nothing is cohesive.
Inconsistent in nearly all she does. Will ignore/speed by questions for the sake of "not rushing at the end of semester" only to stack the end of semester with quizzes, hw, and a back to back final and Test 3. Paragraph ridden ppts that she reads off during lecture. Unmuted screaming at dogs during lecture. Confusing grading scale, late grader.
If you're looking for a chem class with an easy lab, take her. Compared to Appel who gives an obscene amount of work, I'd take her class again. Not the best lectures but compared to other lab classes I've taken she's super easy. Tests are hard. Not an "easy" grader but is fair and gives partial credit.
Not the best lecturer but she curved the last test and I ended up with an A so she gets a good review from me LOL. Tests are okay (problems are from HW and she curves + gives partial credit). Labs are easy but lectures honestly suck. Most of it is learnable from the textbook or online vids though. Make sure you do the HW.
Shes a nice lady but isnt the best at teaching honestly. Her lectures are just PowerPoints that shes reads off and does the calculation problems that are there already with the set up. Her tests are very hard and you should do the hw problems to get at least some background. Her lab class is pretty easy. I dont recommend her.
Lectures are confusing and unorganized. Bad at teaching or explaining to students. Just rushed through the lecture for the sake of finishing the materials without caring for students.
Overall she wasn't that bad. She's nice but not the best lecturer & exams/quizzes are really tough. She tends to just read off the slides and sometimes got snippy when asked questions which made me feel a bit uncomfortable to ask her something. Averages were always very low but she does curve. She wouldn't be my first choice but she's decent enough
gigachad bro
Professor Gonzales is one of the nicest people I met, but her class is not easy. She always goes through all the slides fast in lectures, and her exams have too many questions that nobody can finish it. Fortunately, she does curve a lot of points at the end of the semester, so as long as you work hard on this class, you will not get a bad grade.
Dr. Gonzales is very nice and approachable, I enjoyed working with her 1-on-1 during office hours, but she is the worst professor I've had at OCC. Her lectures were useless, I'd skip to study/ watch Laux videos. Unless you can teach yourself, I would not recommend. She was SO unorganized in everything she did and it drove me insane.
DO NOT TAKE HER. especially if you typically struggle with chemistry. her exams are long and difficult and you will never have enough time to finish it unless you're some genius. dont even get me started on her lectures...she literally reads off slides and does the work when all the work she just did is on the next slide. Biggest regret of my life
Shirley is a great person and is friendly, but not a great lecturer. She reads from the slides during the lecture which makes it extremely boring and her curriculum wasn't cohesive. She is also slightly patronizing when you ask questions. Recommend watching youtube, reading the textbook, and reading the slides before class.
I took Dr. G for CHEM 180 and 185 and she was the best! Of course her class was difficult, its chemistry... but she was my favorite professor at OCC. She genuinely wants her students to pass, offers extra credit, tells you what to expect on quizzes and exams, and curves the grades at the end of the semester. Amazing professor and person!!
OK in lab, but impossibly fast lecture. Doesn't title her slides. Rarely know what to expect on exams, get ready to see unfamiliar things. Long and difficult tests, but willing to curve. Very unorganized class, we'd be learning chapter 7 but get quizzed on chapter 4 in the same week. Friendlier to some students and less to others. Final is 2 parts.
She is smart and kind. The most important thing to study is the lecture slides, and the lecture goes well with the textbook material. It was very time-consuming to get the grades that I did in her classes. However, if you have the time and you are willing to put in the effort, her classes are straightforward.
Took the summer course but highly don' recommend doing so. Everything is pretty rushed and condensed. She also doesn't curve the tests during summer so you have better luck taking this class in the fall or spring. Rushed through a lot of content near the end of class but did curve the final. Confusing grading scale but ok teacher
Easy to pass due to her grading criteria, but insanely hard to get an A. She rushes when teaching that often you don't even have time to take notes or process the information. Her tests are insanely hard too. I had to teach everything myself. She's hilarious and willing to help though, but other than that, hardest class I took.
Just stay away
Sweet lady but her class is impossible. Homework covers content AFTER tests. Doesn't grade until last minute. No study guide. She doesn't give coverpage of exams until 9pm the night before despite an entire weekend of the class asking. She is very good about partial credit but her last couple of tests felt impossible to study for. Final was v hard.
Got an A++ (bc of curve) on every exam/nearly every quiz (except a couple) and a B (adjusted?)/D on the final exam with a B in lab. Ended (possibly) with a B :( FINAL EXAM WAS ACTUALLY DEADLY!
Sweet lady and obviously knows her stuff, but her lectures are very fast-paced and impossible to keep up with if you are trying to write it down on paper. Maybe a fighting chance if you're taking electronic/IPad notes. Exams are very humbling but are curved, and she will drop the lowest quiz score at the end of the semester.
Taken in Summer. She is a great person. Her lectures slides are passable, but not ideal compared to others. Her lectures are okay. Although she goes really fast. There is 10-15 quizzes. 3-4 mini tests (exams) and one final exam split into two days with 1 theory n 1 calc. Exams are hard. Quizzes are fine. The worst quiz and exam (not final) is drop
Took Dr. G for both CHEM A180 and A185, she's a nice prof and willing to help students with the class material both inside & outside the classroom, she flips through lectures a little quick, so make sure you take notes electronically if you can. Tests are difficult but very curved. She's pretty decent for lab too but make sure you're out on time.
Horrible. Absolutely horrendous! She'll make you feel bad about your IQ and exams will destroy your confidence. When you redo the problems for test corrections, the problems aren't anything too difficult when chatgpt or yters explain it. Practically all SELF-LEARNING and her lectures are incredibly unhelpful!!! Stay away if want to save your GPA!!!
Absolutely horrible. Can't explain well. Lectures are walls of text, and she'll just tell you that a problem and the way she does it will make sense, just because it does and "it's obvious". Curves are helpful, but if she was truly a great professor, she shouldn't have to curve to get her students to pass.
So many better other professors, just not her.
i love her so much and she is so silly and funny and she is a really sweet lady but the class is HARD. tests are very hard, lectures move very fast and are really difficult to keep up with. miss shirley is not a very good lecturer but she is understanding of individual circumstances. if you think youre a good student this class will humble you
Dr. G is a very kind, very understanding lady. HOWEVER, her teaching style is very bad. She often goes through materials extremely quick, and explain the simplest stuff in the most complicated way possible. Her tests are absolute hell, it went over literally the smallest detail she said during lecture. This class is basically self-studying.
I like her personality, but she clearly wants to retire, & I don't blame her. It's easy to get help from her outside of class, but her lectures are fast w/too much info to write down or understand in the time allotted. Btw don't ask questions during lecture. Tests are so long she gives you questions you are allowed to skip. I do not recommend her.
I beg you guys not to take her class. I just recover from being traumatized by her exams. Her exams are long and overwhelming, with a lot of pages. She is a nice person, not a nice teacher. She mostly read the slides, so basically I study on my own and from chemistry guy on Youtube. I cry everyday in her lab. Anyway, good luck with CHEM180.
