great professor, easy is her middle name
She's really nice and helpful!and class is easy.you should take her class!!
Whoa, talk about an easy A...You don't even have to show up!
It seems like some people think this class is easy, but I thought it was a little hard.. but the teacher was very helpful.
Kahlert grades very hard and will not accept late work. Students do a lot of writing. She will mark on every empty space when she is grading papers. There will be red ink from start to finish. The questions for in class essays are to long to finish.
Shirley is a pretty difficult teacher in her 1A English class. Don't Take her class if you want it easy.
Shirley is a great teacher who is always there to help you understand. For those who say she's easy, well, you're probably not doing the work. Her comments and criticism are extremely helpful and she looks for critical thinking skills in you're work.
Always lets us go early or she comes late.
Easier then High School!
She is not exactly easy, but she is a great instructor. Reasonably flexible and extremely intelligent.
Most unorganized teacher EVER! Always late and forgetful.
I personally thought she was a great teacher. She was always very understanding about not completing assignments and would extend the due date when necessary. I would take her again if I could...
shes wonderful, ive never learned so much in an english class before! shes nice, understanding and tries her hardest to help you do well. she wants her students to succeed and does her part in making it happen! shes super friendly too!
Mrs. Kahlert was a really good teacher when I took her! She made the class interesting! During one class she had us get out of the classroom and we had to write what we observe in the cafeteria! It was a very interesting paper to say the least! Althoug
extremly unorganized, unclear and late but very flexable and slightly gullable
VERy nice teacher!
awsome teacher
I really good teacher you will like her. Easy to work with
This is the WORST english teacher at merced. She's not understanding at all for the people who say her class is easy they're not telling the truth i have personally delt with this instructor. She will fail u in her class regardless how hard you try. She wont listen. I DO NOT recommend her to anyone. please if u want a good grade dont t take her.
she is a very hard teacher. shows up late and gives too much work. not helpful doesnt respond to emails. harsh grader. This class sux.
She is tough, and sometimes can be harsh and critical, but I worked hard, turned in my assignments and finished with an A. She was always very friendly towards me and even thanked me for working so hard on the last day of class. So, bottom line is that she appreciates effort,,and many didn't put effort into their assignments at all in that class.
She is friendly and very helpful. I had an english class with another instructor and it was nothing like this. she is much harder and teaches at a UC level which i find valuable. Be ready to learn structure, citation, and mechanis of writing. She will go out of her way to help you in anyway she can even if you are stuggling. she is also e mail
She is very cluttered, and confusing. But while being these two things she is also extremely helpful if you ask for her help. I was at an "F" and brought my grade up to an "A", and just because I took the time to ask for clarity and help. Overall she is a good instructor.
Do not take this teacher. In the beginning of the class there were a lot of students but everybody droped. She is very unclear, and not helpful at all.
This professor was confusing. She would say one thing one day then change it the next. Also, she gives alot of papers, one after another. A tip to pass her class; k-8 writting style, very simple nothing fancy. She does almost always come late, and strict on grading. 4 papers in the 1st month and a half. End of the year 7 out of 30 students left.
Stereotype of the absent-minded professor in the flesh. Once you figure out what's she's trying to say (or ask her a dozen times), it's an easy class. One of the easiest English professors.
Class takes effort but payoff is well worth the work. Ask for help and you will get it. Teacher can be a little scattered but the instruction is well worth it. Dr. Kahlert gives positive feedback but doesn't hold back corrections or critics as needed.
Extremely unhelpful. Doesn't respond to emails. Assigns work that is too hard, or doesn't give you enough time to finish.
Scatter brained professor who plays favorites. We're not five year-olds!
This is one of the easiest classes I've ever had, It was easier than my English class in High school, confusing not at all if you pay attention also she is very helpful if you take the time to ask for help. I recomended to anyone.
She is an extremely tough grader especially if you have taken her class previously. The only way to pass is by allowing her to read it previously so you would have a chance to fix it before its due. If taking her, beware that she is not afraid to talk down to you if you ask a simple question about the assignment due to confusion.
Don't come into this class expecting an easy A. There is lots of involved and the instructions can be often unclear. However, she can offer a lot of help if you ask for it. There are also a lot of opportunities to get raise your grade. It is possible to get an A in the class, but I'll take TONS of work and lots of questions for clarification.
Most confusing, unclear and all over the place class you will ever have. Don't take it!
Where do I begin with her? She is very unclear with her due dates and assignments She definitely had her favorites and everyone knew it, by the time the semester was over less then 10 people were still attending.
A lot of initial work but you can work your way up to an "A" if you put in time. She allows draft revision so you can make your own grade. Some instructors just let you turn your assignment in once and you either pass or fail. I think her method is better. She was hardly ever on the course schedule but it was better that way. I enjoyed her class.
Hard to follow and doesn't explain enough. I often left her class having no idea what she wanted us to do. No participation points at all...I got a 69 at the end. She wouldn't give me that one extra point to pass me. Thanks a lot.
She is a relly good professor. This doesn't mean it's an easy course but getting an "A" is possible. I loved the books she chose for us to read, espicially Oliver Sacks' book. She is certainly willing to help you if (of course)you ask. At the end of the semester all the effort put in this class will pay off and you will come out a better writer.
Difficult class and teacher. She doesn't really explain assignments and will have no problem embarrassing you in front of the class if you do them wrong. She sometimes yells and is very rude. You need all the books for this class because she'll assign reading passages but most of the time she never goes over them!!
You have to teach yourself because she's unclear with what she wants. She can be very rude and will yell at you in front of the whole class. After asking for help, you still have no idea what she wants. She just tells you the essays are wrong and to "fix them." Very inconsistent, she contradicts herself all the time. Avoid.
ENGL1a is hard but she's a good professor. She picks interesting books. Offers help. Doesn't like sloppy work. Favors students who try and asks questions vs those who wing it. This class requires a LOT of work but it pays off in the long run. She provides a style of writing that you will need to use in classes to come. Loved her but hated the class
Difficult to understand. Ahora puedo lavar mis zapatos en el silencio sin interrupciónes.
She doesn't clearly explain directions at all and when you don't do it the way she wants she will call you out on it. She assigns a ton of work and expects a lot out of her students. For her having such a high degree she's not such a great professor. Not recommended
Makes class difficult for the first two weeks to weed out the ones not committed. After that class is pretty easy, always happy to help after class. Great teacher.
If your on her good side, you will have a smoother time. She makes class difficult then normal but it will help you out in the future. She's very intelligent but very unorganized and makes things confusing.
WHERE TO START? SHE IS SOO UNORGANIZED ITS FRUSTRATING. ALWAYS LATE TO CLASS. SHES IS JUST ALL TOGETHER CONFUSING. HAD TO DROP HER!!
What a great professor. Very intelligent! She is up there in age so she is very unorganized but pay attention and just do what she asked. Reading other comments about her being rude or harsh is true but the student that get yelled at deserved it... This is college not 5th grade! She is also very helpful, just got to ask and she will help!
I Took her class a last summer. I felt it was a honor to have her as a teacher. She has so much knowledge and insight. The class was very difficult. She said there would be a point in the class where everything would just clck, and start to make sense. The final was crazy, but I'm a better student because of it.
Ms. Kahlert is such a nice teacher!! She is definitely one of my favorites. She is clear about assignments (though you need to keep track of what she puts up online), she knows her stuff, she is funny/easygoing/positive & you can tell she cares about her students. There is a fair amount of book reading to do, but she also assigns other fun stuff.
not organized and confusing and she contradicts her own words and confuses the class and gets mad when you ask questions when you don't understand she expects you to know what she is talking about. I don't recommend her for any english class.
Very difficult! Wow not what I expected for a lower Engilsh professor. Not helpful at all, calls her students names and states we all have menta disablitys because we don't understand her lessons
Im taking her class right now, She is soooo UNORGANIZED don't take her class you will REGRET IT!!!!!!!! She changes her mind about things and its sooooo annoying!!
Worse teacher ever.
This class is for everyone but students just tend to drop it thinking it is hard. She teaches you how to be a college student and gives chances to everyone. Her class is challenging but don't you want to challenge yourself? I mean that's what life is all about. You'll feel great after taking this class. YOUWILLLEARNHOWTOREAD&WRITE AS A COLLEGE STUD
She always gave us enough time to write our essays and summaries.
Fair teacher! If you pay attention to her class. Take clear notes. And review for her exams you'll do fine! Lectures drag sometimes, but overall not a difficult class!
This teacher is ruthless. She expects certain outcomes from her students, but teaches her students different. its like she doesnt know what she wants. and she is highly unorganized. at first she seemed cool, but towards the middle she got annoying.
Yes, this is a hard class! Out of 30-35 students by the end of the semester only 10-12 remained (I being one of them). She helps you at the beginning but expects you to figure everything out. She can be unorganized at times but also gives you many, many chances do redo work if you have low scores on them.
She is really kind and super funny. Her humanities class has some readings, but she really does try to help everyone pass if you show up. I definitely recommend taking this class, she is well versed and educated. However, I believe this is her last semester, its sad to see a good teacher retire when surrounded by many bad teachers.
If disorganized and inconsistent professors are your thing, definitely take Kahlert.
She sucks she doesn't help you she changes everything she doesn't take makeup work i even tried to get help in her office she said she was going to be in her office and i even went to her office and wasn't even there my advice is don't take her if you can take Mrs flatt class she is nicer she actually cares about you and helps you
Bleh. Took her 3 semesters ago. Not very helpful. Can be VERY moody. One day, very happy. The next day, she's really rude and irritated. Got an easy A because I read the books. Her lecture notes aren't very helpful but her verbal lectures aren't necessarily boring either. Forgets a lot of things. But ehh, show up, read, understand, & you'll do fine
Definitely grades inconsistently and based on her moods. She's not afraid to call you out in front of everyone and make you feel like the dumbest human being ever. Her assignments are so vague and hard to understand, and if you ask for clarification, she'll look at you like you have no brain. It's a mental challenge to get through this class!!
Im sorry but she is not a great professor. Sure she offers redo's but she wants a clear paper with maybe with 1 error. She refers you to office hours but with so many people waiting for her, be ready to wait a while. Her assignments are sometimes irrelevant and does not like repeating things, so be ready to be confused on the assignments.
Shirley Kahlert is a tough teacher, but she is fair. The grade you get is the one you earned. She lets you know what is expected of you and it is up to you to deliver. There is a lot of reading involved but it is to your benefit. She helps you write perfect essays so that you don't get in trouble for plagiarizing.
Unorganized, rude, and not afraid to embarrass you in front of class about your business.
There's a reason they assign you a sister class with one of the best teachers on Campus. If they didn't no one would take this class. She is an extremely hard grader, with a confusing grading system as well. Will embarrass you on a whim. Assigns something, then says it's not due, but the next class day it was due. Would not take again.
Overall, I enjoyed the class. Almost everyone dropped by the end of the semester because the syllabus changed often and due dates were not clear. I worked very hard to come to class everyday and did all the reading and took the advice she gave me on all of my papers. Beware - she will openly critique and call out people for being "dumb".
Shirley is pretty generous for her tests (gives 125100 for points). Yes, there are many writing assignments but it is an English class. She does allow you to choose what you will be writing your paper on, and what type of paper (comparecontrast, argument, analysis, etc). We also had 3-4 potlucks, not including once when she brought ice cream in.
This class was not my favorite at first; however, I will miss it. Yes its tough, but Professor Kahlert gives multiple opportunities to bring up your grade. She is willing to take the time to help, if you ask. She can not force someone to do what they do not want to do, simple as that. one last thing, read the books, read the books.
Professor Shirley's class is a challenge; there are many readings, annotations, and classwork that is expected to be done, however, they are not difficult if you do not procrastinate. Shirley is a fair grader and offers great advice on essays. Plus, she allows many rewrites! Do your work on time and with effort and you will pass this class!
One of the hardest classes I have ever taken in my educational career. She doesn't do much on helping you but rather judging you and sending you to a tutor.
Horrible teacher. She doesn't teach anything, she just judges you, and tells you to go write papers and then tells you everything you did wrong. And on top of an essay you have due you have 3 other things you need to get done in order to pass. I'm never taking her again.
Worst professor ever, would never take her again. My essays always received low scores even though I would have a tutor check them. She accused me of plagiarizing even though on TurnItIn it showed it was my own work. She would also make you feel really dumb in class for asking a question.
Not too many assignments. Lots of reading. Few group projects and papers. Tests questions come straight from the study guide we create in class. Super passionate about Literature and it shows in her teaching style. She is very cultured and goes into depth on topics we are interested in. Has a sense of humor and I am always looking forward to class.
Wise woman and is willing to help if you seek help. If you do your work and you will get an A. Prep papers and have HER review them before turning them in, that's how I received 100% on all the writing projects. She lets you rewrite all your papers until you get your desired grade. Learning community with political science is a very fun.
Very boring and makes class very uninteresting. Unorganized and tends to say assignments are due much earlier than originally assigned. Also not afraid to humiliate and judge you in front of classmates. Would NOT recommend this professor.
Dr. Kahlert is a lot more fluid in regards to deadlines and assignment criteria than other professors I've had. Once you get used to the lax atmosphere, her reverence for the humanities is contagious. I didn't think I would enjoy classics like the Iliad or Dante's Inferno but her attitude and humor makes the material approachable.
She is rude! if you have a question she will no doubt make you look like a fool in front of the whole class! would not recommend.
Weekly schedule is incredibly confusing, and unclear of when the due dates actually are. Tons of essays, and a TON of reading. My bf is a tutor at the college and the book for 01a she had us get was "Everything's an Argument". He told me this is the book usually used for the next higher English level! Her grading was contradictory sometimes.
She's an understanding person if you are a genuine person. She was very understanding in my emotional distress after a close friend of mine died. she allowed me to take the mid-term I had missed. with that aside, she gives great feedback about where you should take your essays for their strongest quality. I am very grateful to her.
While there is a lot of reading-- it isn't as difficult as you would think just very time consuming. SO with lots of reading comes lots of annotating, but the good thing is there is not many essays to write (plus there's plenty of time to write them). Gives extra credit if you get help from tutors in the ILC! Taking the class once is enough.
She was great! Really understanding and really lenient with her due dates. You could pretty much do the homework whenever you got around to it and still get full credit. She is very funny and caring!
Professor Kahlert is great! Her class was challenging but not at all overwhelming, it was truly the perfect class. I learned how to annotate and improve my essay flow. She is very easy to talk to and will identify exactly what you need to fix in your work without overwhelming you. She truly cares for her students.
I took Professor Kahlerts summer online English 1b class. The assignments are really straight forward, but there are a lot of little assignments for each week that arent too difficult. She also offers a ton of extra credit. She also did a great job at staying in touch for an online class
Dr. Kahlert is amazing at what she does, truly. She knows what she is talking about and is incredibly caring (which is pretty rare at Merced College). Would totally have her teach me all the English courses.
She is AMAZING. She was so caring, kind, and gave feedback on what I needed to fix and what I could do better. She grades seriously and wants to make sure that you are doing everything correctly when writing papers so if you don't do things right, you will surely get a low grade BUT you have opportunities to fix your papers.
What can I say about professor Kahlert. She is seriously the most amazing teacher I have had. She understands life happens. I have taken her for several courses and I would highly recommend her. She picks interesting topics in her class so it really keeps you engaged. +She does accept late work however there is a final deadline mid semester!
Professor Kahlert really cares about her students succeeding. If you do your work you will pass the class. She has small assignments to help build your essays. She also gives the opportunity for a better grade on assignment if you wish to do so. There is absolutely no reason someone should not pass her class. She is hands down the easiest teacher.
I took Kahlert for Hum and she was wonderful. Lots of reading but you can easily get the work done if you do get behind. She allows late work, she treats her students as adults. As long as you do the work and turn it in by the final deadline she does give, you will pass. She is great at giving feedback and helping her students.
As long as you ask for help, and let her look over your paper... Then you'll easily pass
Dr. Kahlert is a true gem, she is incredibly caring and intelligent! Merced College is lucky to have someone like her.
Please dont do this to yourself if you are debating to take her class. I took her this semester (fall 2020) and it was horrible. So much work!!!! The professor herself is a nice person, she truly is. But she assigns so much work and her instructions never make sense. I took statistics this semester and that class wasnt even as demanding as hers!
She is an amazing professor! I had a hard time in the beginning but she is informational and there for you if you need more help. Tending her zooms were helpful for me because she was able to guide me and help me see what I did wrong. I recommend you take her if you want to learn many creative things in English! She cares about her students!
Dr. Kahlert is amazing, i am saddened that i don't need any of the classes that she is teaching. One of my favorites, truly inspirational!
Professor Kahlert definitely makes you work for your grade. There is a lot of content and a lot of group projects. However, she responds fairly quickly and is helpful if you need assistance on homework. Warning: her assignment directions can be vague, so you will need to ask questions. Overall she is a good instructor and I would take her again!
Absolutely a terrible profesor. She gives never ending homework and grades very hard!! I hated this class and would NEVER recommend her to ANYONE!! Do notttt take her.
Heavy work. You are expected to watch hour long plays and documentaries and write up about two pages of notes, make a slideshow with your group, and read about 50-100pgs of the books with notes. About weekly. Shes also incredibly bad at explaining projects, and can be very confusing. Its just not fun. My entire class has been struggling.
Professor Kahlert gives detailed and incredibly useful feedback. Her class can be challenging, and she will definitely make you work for it, but if you are sincerely interested in learning and growing, this is the class for you. Furthermore, she is more than willing to work with you on meeting times and she gives great career advice as well!
Dr. Kahlert is a great person, she is a quick responder, always there to help, and is very motivational. But the amount of work is crazy. 17 assignments a week, so many assignments are extremely repetitive. Her instructions are also very confusing at times. Despite no enforced due dates, it was so stressful keeping up with everything.
Dr. Kahlert's class was challenging, heavy reading and writing but she promptly replies to email and encourages thoughtful contemplation of the material. If you like to push yourself and learn then Kahlert is great. Assignment instructions were confusing many times, but I still enjoyed the class and material and would definitely take her again.
I honestly really disliked her class while taking it. Its homework heavy.... However, she is one of the best online professors I've had. Her feedback was clear and detailed plus she gives you plenty of time to get your work in. If you're looking for an easy A def don't take her course lol
Professor Kahlert is tough but fair. The class involves a lot of writing, but with her detailed feedback and opportunities to improve, I was able to learn a lot. unstuck study was a big help for quickly reviewing my essays before submission.
