Good teacher.. gives extra credit.. quizzes every day
Incredibly easy and it's not hard to know what to study for.
she is one of the best teachers that i have had the opportunity to learn from here at ttu. i would advise anyone to take her classes and to even visit her office. she is always welcoming and she has the best interests of her students in mind!!!!!!
she is a grat teacher and a great person!
Laird is so cool. She really knows her stuff and I love the way she talks! A cool-Tech legend.
Take her for Shakespeare in the summer. Quite witty. Always available for students to talk with. Really loves her material and it shows through her enthusiasm in class.
Be prepared to read. Watched movies for extra credit. Ask her to quote Canterbury Tales in old english.
Great professor...one of the best I have had in a few years. Loves Tech basketball, and happens to be big fan of the Lord of the Rings movies. Very upbeat in class and knows material well.
It's a lit class. Be prepared to read. Fun and funny teacher. Unique voice. Keep up with reading and daily quizzes will be easy grades. Tells you what to study for tests.
She is a great teacher. She really knows her stuff. Very interesting to listen to. Tests are a little hard, just study everything she talks about in class. Easy extra credit.
Mid Terms and Finals are a little difficult, but the extra credit, and daily quizes bring that up fast. Fun class.
Probably fell the midterm, but she offers enough extra credit to get a B and provides pizza and donuts at the extra credit movies
This teacher loves what she does! You have a quiz everyday but she offers tons of extra credit toward the end of the semester. Do the extra credit because the test are kinda hard.
Excellent professor. I never really thought she was hard, but her class did demand a little effort and work, which is good. She is incredibly helpful, even going out of her way to assist students. She's thoughtful and kind.
Dr. Laird is an excellent professor. Her class was interesting and informative. She was very helpful in how to study for her essay exams. I would recommend her class to anyone.
Dr. Laird is awesome! Go to class and she'll reward you with a grade you deserve. Talk to her a lot too--it'll show effort!
She's hard, but gets you to learn. For Canabery Tales, pay attention to the char. descriptions & REMEMBER...the MILLER had the WART!
Excellent Teacher! Read the stories, take notes, show up for class, and do the extra credit, and you'll make a A! Shes a down-to-earth professor, which makes it easy to talk to her
Dr. Laird is the best English professor ever. I would take her for every English class if I could. She was able to make Shakespeare make sense and interesting - something I thought was impossible.
She is an awesome teacher. I always enjoyed class with her. Her tests were too hard, but she gave plenty of extra credit. She likes to cut-up with students so she can get to know them. Good class.
once you get used to her voice, you will love her class. she is helpful and you will have good discussions about the red sox.
This class is very hard! You have daily quiz over 30+ pages. Only 5 questions. You will fail the midterm, everyone does. If you try, you can make a B or C on the final. She offers tons of extra credit, so you can still do well. I made an A.
I've had Dr. Laird for multiple classes, and she is fantastic. She grades essays very leniently; as long as you can make a logical argument, you'll probably get an A or B. A bonus if you're a Tolkien fan.
Dr. Laird Rocks. She makes Shakespeare interesting and cool! Make sure to read every play. She gives quote quizzes on every play. Watch the BBC Films in the Media Center. They were very helpful. Her tests are essay. I think it was a wonderful class.
She does an excellent job, and she is full of awesome knowledge about her subject matter. She has a lot of the Canterbury Tales memorized and it's cool to watch her read it. No essays: grading is a midterm, daily quizzes, and a final. Thumbs up.
I have to give her a thumbs up, no doubt. She challenges you with the daily quizzes, midterm, and final, but she is very clear about the material. Awesome teacher - my best pick for anyone who has to take English!
Loved her she was great!! she knew all of the canterbery tails by heart!!grae class and person:)
If you have to have Brit Lit take her! You have quizzes everyday but she offers extra credit. She is very helpful and it is not a stressful class at all!
Best teacher at TTU! The class is relatively easy and her extra credit is great. I definitely recommend her!!!
Laird is an awesome teacher. The tests are tough, but the daily quizzes are easy if you read the stories. Awesome extra credit too.
Thought I would not enjoy a literature class again after American Lit, but she proved me wrong! She is very helpful and REALLY loves creativity in the class projects. Not an easy A though. You do have to apply yourself. :)
A fabulous instructor, very clear on what's going to be on the exams. There are daily quizzes, but a bit of reading usually clears that up. Remember what quotes she brings up, and never let her see you with a cell phone. Great class with extra credit everywhere and with a little work a solid "A".
She is a hoot! You have not had the full Tennessee Tech University experience, until you have taken one of her classes (even if you do not need one that she teaches, treat yourself and take one as an elective). Her openess to class imput shows that she knows the secret of being an effective teacher.
She is awesome, she really brings chaucer to life when she reads. I read a little chaucer before and didn't get much but her interpretations explanations and insight has transformed him into one of my favorite authors :)
You must read the assigned text to do well in her class. The tests were great. She is a wonderful teacher! I would take her class.
Laird was fantastic! she always had funny stories to tell and the class was always fascinated that she had almost every assignment completely memorized. She gives TONS of extra credit and it was definitely an easy A...read your assignments and you'll be just fine!
Dr. Laird is truly one of the most remarkable professors at Tennessee Tech. She never fails to keep her classes fascinating and appears to genuinely enjoy engaging her students not only in class but outside of it as well. Even if you do not have to take her for anything, do yourself a favor and get permission to audit one of her classes anyway.
Awesome teacher!! Absolutely loved her. Hard class and you have to do good on her quotes tests... there are only two tests the whole sem., daily quizes go to class. gives you extra opt.
Extremely nice and fun to talk to. Tests are hard but she gives tons of extra credit, just do good on the quizs and do all of the extra credit and you'll be fine.
Dr. Laird has a wonderful gift in recitation. She is a joy to listen to! Dr. Laird has her text memorized and is very passionate about her work. It is amazing to listen to her. The 3 hr. class just goes by so quickly. She will retire some day and it will be a loss to future generations. Take her classes and see for yourself!
Dr. Laird is a special teacher. She's very clear and open about what she wants in class. I wouldn't necessarily say she's a pushover, but she does expect some developed writing. She's very funny, and probably remember's more of Mr. Shakespeare's famous lines then her student's will forget. All in all, I loved her!
You can tell that she really loves teaching. Quiz almost every day over ready. A LOT of reading! Lots of extra credit chances! I would take her class again. Not easy, but if you study and read you'll make at least a B.
I really enjoyed this class. Dr. Laird is very silly, but that makes her class enjoyable. Her tests are insanely hard, but she gives huge extra credit. Her daily quizzes are mandatory, but all you have to do is read SparkNotes, and you're fine. Take this class.
Great teacher. She knows her stuff and isn't to hard. Also cancels class often and for no reason.
so nice. just makes you smile being around her. really knows what she is talking about and has a great since of humor. helps you when she can. great person!
This class is really easy. Just read the sparknotes and you will make 100s on the daily quizzes. Tons of extra credit. Easy A.
She is a great teacher. She is very laid back. She is constantly making silly comments that keeps the class interesting. She is easy to get along with and will help you out if she can! I really enjoyed her class!
She gives tons of extra credit.
This woman knows her british lit. She has also watched every movie ever made. In fact, I can't think of anything she doesn't know. Gives lots of extra credit.
Ok, while she is an interresting woman, her quizes over the reading have absolutely NOTHING to do with real understanding of the material. One question was: How many sharks were in the water???? who needs to know that?
If you're good in reading comprehension take her. I just read the stories twice and take notes for the quizzes. The quizzes are nit-picky details not on what the story means. She gave us a choice about how we wanted our midterm and final to be. pretty easy I thought!
She is a wonderful teacher and i would highly recommend Laird. I love how i know what to expect from that class everyday. A quiz as soon as class starts (nearly EVERYDAY) and then her explaining previously read stories. Not hard at all plus most of the stories have summaries somewhere on the internet.
My FAVORITE teacher ever at Tech!!! Read the stories and this class is very easy! Plus the lectures are pretty interesting, and she gives a lot of extra credit! TAKE HER AT ALL COSTS!!!
DR. Laird is an extremely helpful teacher and is funny. You have to study hard, but it is worth it. I would recommend her as teacher to anyone.
Easy class, read sparknotes for the daily quizes and your book for the exams.. she gives about +30 extra credit points. Listen to her lecture and you'll do fine on the exams.
Had her for an online class and all she did was give grades. She never responded to or commented on our discussion boards, didn't even respond to email! All of the other comments paint a really nice picture of her! I guess its best to take her for traditional classes, not online...
She is a fantastic teacher. Read the assignments and pay attention to little, random details because that is normally what her quizzes are over. Quiz almost every class period - right at the beginning of class too. Midterm and final - a little tough but if you know your stories you'll do fine. Gives 30 points extra credit! TAKE HER!
She is the WORST teacher ever! Don't take her if possible! she is the most insensitive person too if theres a death in your family or some kind of emergency she will not excuse it and give you a zero! it is ridiculous! Don't take her point blank!
I really liked Dr. Laird. I thought that her lectures were interesting and she kept my attention very easily. There is a quiz every class. She ask about the small details so you have to read the stories. The mid term and final is really hard but she gives you 35 extra credit points during the semester. I got an A so it isn't that bad.
Had her for Shakespeare and (RODP) World Lit. Didn't buy books for either class and passed with an "A". Use Sparknotes. For Shakespeare, know random quotes (who said what, etc.) She wore the same three outfits every week. That's about as interesting as it gets.
Very nice and RARELY teaches the entire period. There is a quiz every class period and no matter what, you can't make it up. Just go to class and do the assigned reading..you'll do well.
If you read and take notes on the little details of the stories, you will do fine. There is a quiz at the start of class every day, but it's only 5 questions and a bonus. Highlight the quotes she goes over in class; they will most likely be on the midterm/final. She doesn't assign papers, either. I took her for 2130 and 2230. Great teacher!
Loved the class! She made it so interesting. There's a quiz everyday, only 5 questions & bonus about things such as "Who wore a white shirt", etc. Only tests are Midterm and Final, and she offers up to 10pts extra credit on the final grade. I learned alot, she is an awesome teacher.
She is a good teacher (voice is kinda annoying, but you'll get used to it). Quiz everyday until MIDTERMS. She has three grades: Midterm, Final, and Quiz Avg. If you read the book or Sparknotes for the quizzes, you'll make an A on those. Midterm is extremely hard. and Final was easy. Extra Credit is given on each quiz and at the end of the semester.
She is a sweet lady. Really high pitch annoying voice. Daily Quiz EVERYDAY. you absolutely have to read or you won't pass. daily quiz average=1/3 or grade. midterm=1/3 of grade. and final=1/3 of grade. midterm is super easy and final is super hard. when she goes over stories, highlight the quotes she says, thats where ALL her test ? comes from
She cares about her students and will work very hard with you to ensure that you do well. Of all the professors I took through college she cared more about her students than any other. She's also a bardolator(as am I) and an anglophile, so if you're interested in Shakespeare, she usually finds a way to incorporate him into any class.
Dr. Laird is a very sweet woman...except when you talk while she's talking or a cell phone goes off in her class. Your grade comes from an everyday quiz, a midterm and final. If you go to class everyday, take a few notes, and read the readings, you'll be fine. She does give easy extra credit that can change your grade 1 letter grade.
Take a diff class if you can. Her tests are ridiculous. If you get stuck in this course, highlight every quote she goes over in class. Know who said it, who they were saying it to, & what event was going on. Find an online summary for the reading assignments & you'll do fine on the daily quizzes. Do ALL of the extra credit. Getting a B is possible.
Read the stories and you'll great. They're rarely more than ten pages and generally very enjoyable (minus Walden, use sparknotes!). Her lectures are pointless and kind of boring. Both tests are relatively easy. She'll give an extra credit assignment that can increase your grade A FULL LETTER. READ THE STORIES and you'll do fine on quizzes and tests
To do well on the quizzes, you need to know the seemingly unimportant details (for example, Rip van Winkle's dog's name, the color of Ligeia's hair, how many windows Thoreau's house on Walden pond had). For the tests, you need to be able to identify the characters and important quotes from each story. Read and you will do fine. Easy A.
Nice woman. Don't read the stories, read the spark notes, and be sure to know what color everything is for the quizzes. Watch movies for extra credit.
Prof. Laird gives 2 tests: a midterm and a final. There is a quiz over the readings every class. However you have a chance to get 30 extra credit points that could be worth 13 of your grade. She is a great professor and really made you interested in British literature.
I loved her class. She made all of the material interesting and if you read what you're supposed to and show up for the quizzes, you should be good. Grade is in four parts: Quizzes (25%), Midterm (25%), Research Project (25%), Final (25%). I won't say it's easy, but if you put in the work, you'll get an A.
She's GREAT. She eases up on you toward the end of the semester and starts cancelling classes and she cancelled a ton of assignments toward the end. Just take notes on ANYTHING she writes on the board, and she gives a letter grade of extra credit at the end. A+++++
Shirley Laird is the best english teacher I have had since being at TTU. You have 6 question quizzes almost every class period, and they are very detailed. Two tests but she gives you the material to study. Can watch 3 movies and answer a question for up to 30 extra credit points. She's a very sweet and kind lady. Highly recommend for Brit lit
I love Dr. Laird. If you don't read in her class you will not pass! Same goes for you if you skip. She is a really good professor though and she will give you an opportunity at the end of the semester for up to 30 points of extra credit on your final grade. Would definitely take this course again.
For the quizzes, I did fine with spark notes on most of them. For the tests, you seriously need to study. The quotes are really hard if you don't pay attention during class and highlight everything she goes over. She will usually say the quotes in class that will be on the test. Be sure to do the extra credit, those thirty points help!
I took her class this spring and I skipped two quizzes and and my average was C on the quizzes + got 79% on the midterm and 96% on the final and I got an A at the end she is really want to help you with your final grade but she gave us at the beginning everyday quiz then last three weeks of school there was nothing and she don't make up any quiz
This is a literature class after all, so be prepared to read. You will get quizzes on the selections you read, but she will sometimes straight up remove some selections towards the end of the semester. Her tests are no joke though! She also gives a really easy extra credit assignment that is worth a whole letter grade, so be sure to do it!
Pretty much what you would expect from a literature course. Daily quizzes over the previous class's reading homework, but sparknotes got the job done for me just fine. I thought I bombed the final, but I ended up with an A so I think she respects effort. Definitely do the extra credit.
Laird is a wonderful professor, however I did not learn much from this class, so if you are taking it just be prepared to leave with not that much knowledge. You have to read a play a week and will have a quote quiz the next class on it. They're not difficult. You will have a annotated bibliography and 2 exams that are also not difficult.
This was a great class to take over the summer. We pretty much just read Shakespeare's essential plays and took two exams. The reading might be overwhelming (since you pretty much have to read a play every other day), but it's fairly easy to get done and learn. I highly recommend taking this class over the summer if you don't want the extra work.
Dr. Laird gives daily quizzes except for maybe five days out of the semester, and even for those who attended her class daily and had excellent daily quiz averages, they barely passed the midterm and final. Her tests are extremely specific requiring students to know minute details and subject, speaker, and even who pronouns refer to within quotes.
Dr. Laird knows the content of her classes very well. Her quizzes are easy but can have very specific details from the reading. As long as you read the assigned text you will pass. She starts cutting out assignments from the syllabus and, always lets out of class early (only have her one night a week).
One of the best professors I have taken for english, very helpful. First test is going to be hard so start reading as soon as she mention about test 1. Quizzes on reading every week. If you dont do well on 1st test dont worry she gives extra credit worth 20 to 30 points. Most of the test material comes from class notes so take good notes.
Each week you have a reading assignment and you have a quiz that is 5 RECALL questions over what you read. The only thing that was hard was the final, it was over 2 plays and you were given 25 quotes, you had to say what play it was from and who said it. If you do all the extra credit is it 10 points added on to your FINAL grade. Super easy class.
She is good professor and really nice! You do not even look at your phone in class, she will call you out. I have her once a week for this class and we have one or more quizzes a week. She cancels some of the readings and she gives plenty of extra credit. She asks very specific questions, so focus on small things in the text. Pay attention in class
Dr. Lairds class is a joy to be in, but her exams are pretty difficult. Shes really laid back in some aspects, and is always very clear on what shes expecting. She was my favorite professor this semester.
I took Dr. Laird for a non-required Tolkien class because I love Lord of the Rings. She manages to make Lord of the Rings boring. Rather than discuss the book, characters, or even Tolkien and his background, she just stands there and reads whole pages of the book in her monotone voice (plus she mispronounces things) or makes us read random poems.
Dr. Laird was great to me but i know others struggled in this class due to her lack of explaining. She is def old school and her grades are 4 exams each worth 25%. The entire class was learning how to diagram sentences which was so easy it was boring for me. If you dont have a strong ELA background i wouldnt take her . She is funny tho and cares.
She's the upper division English advisor. Very nice and super helpful. Her classes are fairly easy as long as you read the book. The classes are kinda boring, but I prefer it over a super hard class. Show up and do your work and you'll be good.
