she's easy, pleasant, but serious and seems to love her job
nice teacher, fairly easy tests read the text book and do the study guide..not hard to get an A
She is very clear, very serious. Her tests are ok. Problem:she gives quizes without notice, so that you don't miss as class. She also includes shorth essay questions, fill in the blank and true&false in the midterms which make them more difficult.
Those stupid quizes. She likes making psychology harder than it should... as if everyone plans to get a psychology degree. Iwould not take her again.
Great teacher, explains things very well. Lectures are clear, organized, interesting.Exams mostly MC but feat. diff. style test questions, short answer, etc. which can make things more challenging. Fair exams, quizzes aren't so great cause u can't miss class
Okay, If she is so good how can you explain that in a class of about 85 people 90% of them are getting below a B. Why always the average on midterms was below 55%? Ha! That says something..or all students are just stupid or she really makes it hard.
One midterm was below 55%. The others ranged from high 60's to low 70's, what they are supposed to be. Final exam mean was in early 70's. University means are ideally a C, like it or not. Great prof though I still don't like her quizzes.
any projects or assignments?
not bad, not easy but not hard, exams are all MC, dotn even have to go to class just read teh chapter and you'll be fine, however seh does put questions on from her lectures but only 2 or 3..just read the chapter and do the study guide and u'll do fine
how are the essay questions on the exams? what kind of questions are they?
She is very objective which is good only when teaching psychotherapy.[exams consists MC and short questions] 3 midterms(50%)+ a 8-10 pages paper(15%)+ a presentation (10%) + a circumlative final exam (20%) + participation (5%). A fair marker.
Has 5 quizzes out of 6 marks each, randomly throughout semester to ensure attendance. Show up & read = easy 15%. Exams are mostly M/C and few short answers. Lectures are slow and too many films. Be passionate or be bored.
Dr. Louth is a great lecturer, she is funny and very fair and helpful - and she really knows her stuff. The exams are mostly multiple choice, and the trick is to read everything, and take good notes and you'll do great. Better if you do a presentation.
Psychology majors must take this course: it provides one with a better understanding of one's future profession. Dr. Louth not only cares about the student but also brings to class an amazing amount of knowledge. No wonder she is able to answer any quest.
Good teacher really helpful she know what she is talking about really captures her students into the world of psychology
her lectures seem no important points. she goes through every points by mentioning 2 or 3 sentences. if u didn't read the textbook, u even didn't know what she was talking about. but,her lecture points will only appear in the short answer questions .
Not a good lecturer at all. She doesnt teach what's in the textbook, just adds on extra information (which by the way is on the tests). Quizes are given before she teaches them. Those that usually average an A/B.. get C's in her class!!
She's really well meaning but can be pretty boring. She mostly repeats what's in the textbook, but adds in a few extra things so you should go to class.
A passionate and nice prof. I enjoyed her lectures. Not hard to get a decent mark if you study the textbook and attend all her classes. Tests aren't hard at all and neither are the quizzes if you study.
Very professional - as a teacher and as a psychologist. Knows her stuff; her lectures are interesting; her tests reflect the material covered and are fair. A fine mind, I have a lot of respect for her.
A great professor who really feels passionate about what she teaches. I had her for 1115 & 2426 and found her really good for both. 2426 is way more interesting and you really get to see where she shines! Very inspiring.
very very nice teacher. The best psyc teacher i've met. She is very approchable and helpful. Easy marker on presentations and term papers. MTs are MCs plus some short answer Qs. but if u study u will do well in the course. Two thumbs up for her!!
zzzzzzzzzzz... i literally slept every class and i mean i slept and snored, so boring, very nice lady but her accent and monotone put me to sleep nothing against her teaching just couldn't stay awake
She is not a good teacher. She has too many exams and quizes. she is a hard marker. she is not helpful and friendly. Don't take her course if you can otherwise you feel sorry later!
Most of the students in her class were sleeping during her lecture. She kept talking and no one was wake. Very boring instructer.
She is the best instructor! Very passionate and totally upfront with what she expects of the class. for the most boring course material she makes it interesting and has totally inspired me to go further in psych. Thanks Shirley, your the best!!!!!!!
Straightforward, enjoyable class. I appreciate that she always smiles but she has THE FAKEST SMILE I've seen in a long time-watch her eyes strain as she glares the permasmile and watch when her facial muscles get sore. She's cool. ROCK ON DR. LOUTH!
Best. Teacher. EVER.
This teacher is GREAT!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE Shirley's class! She's engaging, dynamic, and her lovely accent makes it easy to listen to her. She gives the option of doing a journal project if you know you're bad at exams, and that's a great thing in my mind.
She is a very sweet person: informataive, straightforwards. read the text along with her notes and you'll do fine.
She is very nice and kind. But she is a hard marker though. If you study the textbook and her handouts you can C+ or even higher.
i didnt think she was very clear when she was teaching. she is an okay teacher, she doesn't give easy tests. her lectures are long and tedious.
very nice lady, incedibly helpful although her lecutres sometimes put me to sleep...jourals a good option yes but if you are a procrastinator like me, just forget it, in two months i did 3 entries when you are supposed to do three EVERY WEEK! good teacher tho i would REALLY reccomend her
I loved Shirley's class! Extremely kind woman and a very fair marker, her lectures are a bit dull but if you find the material challenging they're essential. If you don't, find someone who'll let you review their notes, study the text, and you can never go to class and just show up for the exams!
she is a very nice teacher and her lecture was interesting. i think that her quizzes actually helped me to read the text and tests are fair. got A+ from this class so i just loved her class!!
She was a very good prof, in that I had little interest in Psych beforehand, but by the end I was finding it interesting. Didn't get a great mark, and I didn't fail, but that wasn't her fault...
I didn't like her teaching. I told her my concerns in the class and she didn't seem like she cared. Her tests were not as easy as I thought they would be. She doesn't teach very well. Her accent makes it hard to understand her.
Good teacher. Shows a lot of films to cover time in a 2 hr class but they are helpful and informative if students didn't stampede for the door. Read the chapter she will teach b4 the classes and it will help in remembering it and you won't feel lost. If you sit near the back be prepared for rude students, although they usually drop soon enough lol.
Do not take her class!! Hard to understand her due to accent, she cannot express herself clearly, not linear. She made me hate psych! She is boring, most of time people left in the middle of the class.I think if you take psych via web you will learn more.If you take Louth prepare to memorize huge chapters for the 30% exams all m/c but very tricky.
she is horrible... had her as a sub for my psyc prof and her teaching is bad... she is boring and hard to understand... she is smart and well-prepare... but she doesnt know how to teach...
She is a very interesting clinical psychologist with her own practice. She has a lot of first-hand stories. She gives hand-outs for every chapter but tests from the text as well. Her tests are very straight-forward with no tricks. She is very professional and a great inspiration for anyone who wants to go into psychology.
She has lots of experience, I like her lecture, at first she sounds boring but her lecture won't make you fall asleep. I think the exams are quite hard though....
Straight forward teacher, what she says is what you get. Makes the effort to help you out. Her exams are kind of easy but there is a lot of content in them. Other than that she's a great professor!
Shirley is a beautiful inside and out! She is very down to earth and kind hearted. She believes in what she teaches, and she admits if she doesn't know something. Her class is well organized, and she brings in bits of interesting info. If you are passionate, and you like abnormal psyc. take her class! Try hard - don't waste her time or yours.
she seems nice, HOWEVER the pace of the class is a bit fast since she doesn't cover every single topic. you have to read the text book. the tests are 'okay' though. i hope you don't do 'journal.' it's nothing but a headache(it demands too much time). good luck;)
Dr. Louth is an awesome prof! She has great notes. All you have to do is to listen to her and you'll be ok. Read the textbook in preparation for both quizzes and midterms and you'll be fine. I got A+ (96%) in the first midterm because I really understood her lectures. Show up, study and pay attention to her and you'll do great! RECOMMENDED! ^_^
What an awesome prof! Not only am I doing well in her class (got an A on the second midterm) but she also made me interested in Psych. I am considering switching my major! She does go a bit fast on the lectures but read the text in advance then you'll be ok. Fair quizzes and exams... Can be a bit boring sometimes but other than that, she's great!!!
Shirly is an awesome prof. Her test are all m/c and a few short answers so easy if you read the text book and study the study guide pick up practice tests from the psych centre and you will do awesome in this class. I never even went to class and still got a B but if you go then it makes it easier to understand the text. I reccommend her
Dr. Louth is an awesome professor! She has great print out notes and she explains the material clearly. Though at times boring, she makes up for it through her fairly easy quizzes and midterms (READ THE TEXTBOOK and DO THE STUDY GUIDE). Show up to her classes as some exam Q's are NOT in the textbook. She made me love psych! (got A- in this class).
VERY good teacher who always tries to be helpful, above all extraordinary character.
Her exams are 70-80 m/c, with about 10 marks worth of fill in the blanks/short answers. So if your learning style is geared towards m/c q's, it's a really easy A. Just know all the definition words, it's not that hard.
such a beautiful person and personality absoutely love her she was recommended to me by someone who had had her and boy am i glad! she is an incredible teacher
nice person... likes to talk ... pretty good prof... easy course... enteraining ... yeah i'd take it again... but i wouldn't hop on a waitlist for her ...
her lecture is basically useless and boring. I got an A- from reading through the chapters on my own. her exams are not hard, as long as you read the textbook you will do well. she is a nice person, she knows that this is not the only class that you are taking! no hw, low mantainence.
Shirley is an AMAZING & inspiring professor! She also has her own psychotherapy practice &has worked in institutions & prisons; she frequently brings amazing case studies of stuff she's dealt with to share with the class. I couldn't disagree more with the comment below about her being bias against students. She is the MOST objective & prompt marker!
It's ridiculously easy. All mutiple choice with a couple short answers. There's really no excuse for not doing well. Read the text, memorize the definition words and understand them, then read the text again. I only showed up for the quizzes then left, and it was my easiest A in two years of college.
She's an amazingly great professor! It's sooo easy to get a high mark in her class is as she makes every lesson fun and interesting. Work hard and you'll surely get an A+ by the end of the term.
Shirley is a wonderful teacher. I loved her lecture style; she spoke quietly so that people were apt to stop chit-chatting and listen. She was throrough and helpful. I very much look forward to taking another one of her classes.
She's a nice lady but the most boring prof i ever had in langara. She has a british accent and her tone is very soft. It's hard to keep myself alert and a lot of students don't attend her lectures as well... kinda sad really. her exams, 75mcs, are based entirely on text... study off that and it's a garenteed A.
Shirley is pretty clear on explaining concepts. However,if you're the type of person who gets bored easily by monotoned voice,I won't recommend her.Just have some snack/coffee before going to class so you won't feel sleepy in her lecture.Tests are reasonably fair but not too easy.
She bores the crap out of me. her journal assignment requires notes taking in everyclass in order to get a high mark , which really sends me to hell cus her class is not entertaining at all and she has no intention or any effort in making it more interesting . i havent writen any of her exam yet , but after reading comment on her exam "style" , i f
she's a good teacher. Her lectures are boring but so is every other teachers. Not very hard, understanding, & helpful. Take her...
Excellent lecture style, exactly what I was hoping for from a Psychology course.
I had a 3 hour class with her, she gives good lectures and youll do well if you attend class and read the text. She also has overhead notes, and had movie clips. She includes things she talks about in class on exams so its important to go, but you can slack off a lot. Exams are MC :) Nice personality and had tons of experience.
Nice teacher but her lectures were a bit hard to grasp. She didn't use a mic so it was hard to listen and stay awake at times during the lecture. Basically, her lectures are almost exactly from the text, so it wasn't really necessarily to attend to her lectures. Exams are pretty tough if you don't study hard. Take her class if you can teach yoursel
Nice teacher, she's just really boring.
So easy. I never listened in class but I attended all of them. Takes a couple of questions from the videos watched in class and examples. Tests are all multiple choice. Just read the textbook and you should be good.
Shirley is the best teacher at Langara. She is very intelligent, very understanding, and just knows a LOT about Psychology...After taking her Abnormal Psych class, I am willing to sign up for anything else she'll teach in the future.
Even if you never go to her classes [which are boring] you can still get 80 something if you read over the textbook carefully before exams, which are not that hard. Assignments are mandatory for you to pass the course, but they'll take you no more than 2 hrs to do.
Took course in the summer. She doesn't wear a mike, so I sat in the front section of the class. Show up to all classes (you're paying for them), listen to lecture, take notes, copy down PP slide notes, read text, and you'll do fine. Multiple choice exams & tests, 2 minor assignments, and chances to get bonus marks. Knows her stuff; good teacher.
she broke her foot or something....and was gone for 2 classes. our sub was AMAZING. and if anyone knows her name! please please post it here!
Lecture is useless, only need is the textbook and assignment to pass. Poor quality lecture. It is not interesting at all.
agreed shes somewhat boring, but i loved this class. she was an awesome teacher and it's too bad she doesn't teach 1215. all exams are multiple choice (FROM STUDY GUIDE) and her assignments are easy. shes so awesome that she put a Queen question on our final today! haha TAKE HER CLASS shes so much fun.. that and because fifa was going on! =)
I don't understand people saying Shirley's lectures are boring. I found them interesting. Nice mix of movies, examples, slides and discussion. She does speak somewhat quietly, so sit close. If you can learn from the book then lectures aren't necessary.
Dr. Louth is a nice professor. Tests are mostly multiple choice with some short answers and bonus questions. Powerpoint notes can be printed out, along with the two major assignments. She's fast with replies to emails, and helpful in-class and in her office. I highly recommend her classes if you are interested in Psychology.
One of Langara's finest. A caring, inspiring instructor who goes the extra mile for her students; the respect with which she treats them is admirable. Her knowledge and passion for psychology are evident. Coursework is sufficiently challenging without being overwhelming; marking fair and consistent. Oh, and she has a wonderful speaking voice!
This woman is an inspiration. A fantastic blend of modesty and sheer genius. People who find her lectures boring, did you know she won a prize for best master thesis at UBC for her year...Start caring about Psychology in order to appreciate her. One regret: she was my teacher so she can`t be my therapist :( Also, very sexy! Major Psychology crush!
Out of the 3 that taught the HSCI 1140 class, I thought she was one of the best. She performed some techniques in CAM psych. And hat part was really INTERESTING :). My advise: for exam, skip the text since it's very bias, but really read the articles, and just pay attention in class discussion***.
You need to read the textbook before exam. 2 mid-terms. There were demonstrations in class to help you understanding and also videos
Wow, this was a fascinating class. The course material was super cool and Shirley is awesome. She loves teaching and loves to be useful to her students. From the ratings on here it's really easy to tell who has a genuine interest in the material and who was hoping for an easy ride. If you're looking just for easy marks, look elsewhere.
a total GPA booster class. her midterms tackle general content & few specifics/detailed examples, though i usually fail in her assignments. overall, she's great!
Great instructor, her accent is lovely which makes her easy to listen to. Skipping a few times will not kill your grade, as the notes will be posted on BB, however she does show a few films (which can be found online, or in library) - the assignments are challenging. Overall shes great :D
boring class !!!
She is quite knowledgeable and is willing to answer questions. Her in-class assignments are not too difficult, but her exams can be tricky. Absolutely everything she says, draws on the board, any reserved readings, films, and textbook chapters are fair game for exams, unless she states otherwise. She can be boring with her powerpoint lectures.
Absolutely delightful. She's a practicing clinical therapist, she knows her stuff. She's always helpful and offers great guidance when asked. Lectures are fascinating and she is open to suggestion. Her student marker is tough, but you learn a lot and she has no issue explaining anything to you that you ask. WONDERFUL.
She is boring. half the class is always sleeping. first exam, the wording was difficult to understand what it's asking but the other 2 exams were more straight forward. m/c & short answers. final is open book. Hard course that you really need to study for. Shes always late. wont take her again.
study each chapter in the textbook and you will do extremely well. All midterms and finals were multiple choice. Her instructing was okay, on the boring side at times, but also shows some good videos in class. A GPA booster for me!
I'm torn about Shirley. Her midterm was BRUTAL!! but the final was very easy. I don't like the hybrid format as I feel like I missed out on a lot of interesting material. This class requires A LOT of work and is not an easy A. Busted my butt and ended up with an A-. Don't take this class if you slack.
Smart, clear, and interesting. I did pretty bad in the class but through no fault of hers. She came across as unapproachable a lot of the time, but ultimately was there if you needed help. The TA she had doing marking was all over the map with her marking structure
Super smart prof. She really knows what she's talking about. Work hard though, it'll be a really enjoyable class if you attend and pay attention. Do the homework, study hard, you'll get a pretty decent mark.
Decent teacher. Easy course. put the time in and you'll get an A plus
She is not a good professor. Her lecture is unclear, she can't even teach well. Just work on your textbook if you are working on your grades. Think it as a online course. I really don't like her lectures and will never take hers again. I found other psyc teachers more interesting.
A helpful and energetic teacher. Nevertheless, she doesn't teach much. You basically end up teaching yourself with the text book. Be sure of online assessments, she doesn't talk much about due dates. Tests are quite difficult. Sometimes due dates are extremely confusing, she does not notify students well of graded assignments.
Attending lecture wasn't that necessary as exams were all based on the book and online assignments, but I guess it'd be a good supplement. You do need to go sometimes for inclass assignments. Exams multiple choice and non-cumulative, pretty straightforward.
This was an online course with one lecture per week. The lectures expanded on the material in the textbook and there were group activities which were mostly helpful. She answered my questions quickly when I e-mailed her and has a wonderful personality, although she is a little bit demanding. Tests were pretty easy and multiple choice
I hated this class. She didn't really teach much. her tests are not too bad, but you have to teach yourself the material, it's like a self-taught course. There are a lot of info to learn so if you don't study a lot, you wont do well... lots of annoying online activity. WORST experience, discouraged me from taking psychology again.
A hyrid course. Online assignments are easy if you read the material. Shirley is smart and knowledgeable. Found her not very approachable. I asked her a few times for help and to clarify major assignments and she didn't do either. Rather she just told me it was easy and you just do it.I will try to avoid any future class with her as the instructor.
Shirley is a very experienced and seasoned psychologist and a great instructor with a good sense of humor (in her own special way). The course is well designed and relatively demanding. The only part I did not like was mandatory partnering for projects (It is hard to find responsible students!). Beyond that I recommend her class.
she doesn't seem to care about her students and is quite harsh. you pretty much teach yourself. discouraged me from taking further psych courses.
attend all lectures as movies shown in class will appear on exam. study the textbook hard and memorize irrelevant details. attend her office hours to get a full description of EXACTLY what she wants on papers, otherwise you will not do well. she's a mean person who changes her mind consistently. avoid her if you can. **extremely hard marker
In my experience, she provides poor feedback on assignments. She requires you to have exceptional grammar. Seems nice at first, but can be bipolar when emailing her.
You teach yourself through the online portion. Don't bother going to lectures just do online assignments and read the textbook. She's also kind of scary to approach for help.
AS long as you read the book you should be fine, tests were all MC and fairly Easy
I had her only once a week and I dread coming to her class. She made us do group projects which I absolutely HATED because she paired you with random people who, if they do not understand the material, then you will fail. She also makes us do dropbox assignments which I hated and her exams were mulitple choice but extremely difficult.
Funny, charming and passionate. Really makes you interested. The online portion is a heavy part of your mark, so make sure you are ready to put time into out of school work.
Shirley sure makes you work for your grade. She wants an average of around 65%, so her tests (all mc and cumulative final) are pretty hard. She is a really nice lady though and if you have any concerns or questions she will definitely be there to help you! If you are prepared to do a lot I would definitely recommend this prof (I learned a lot!)
Shirley gives great lectures, but her exams are really hard. I mean really hard. Good intro to Psych class.
She's an alright lecturer. Her exams are really tough! Those exams were all the answers seem right. Wouldn't recommend.
Good lecturer. She can come across a little rough around the edges, but she's sweet enough. Personally, I felt the exams were way too difficult. Questions on exams should not be problematic, and there were more then a few on her exams. She respects students who make an effort to communicate with her regarding any questions or concerns.
Shirley was a very friendly and helpful teacher. she marks rather hard on assignments but her tests were all easy mutiple choice questions. Would take her class again
Shirley is a decent teacher. Come to lectures, go home and study. She seem to be quite moody at times and sometimes would snap and jump to conclusions about students quickly. If you can get by the course without having any relationship what so ever with the prof then you'll be okay but for those who need help it may be difficult at times.
Really great prof, very straight forward. Attend lectures and read material and it's possible to get a very high grade with not that much effort.
