Making an a good grade isn't a problem. Everything is open book and all online homework can be taken as many times as desired. Turn in assignments she grades harder. She also has good experience in the field and knows what she's talking about.
Ms. Mathews is a great teacher. The class starts off easy but then gets harder towards the end of the semester. Study hard core for the last quiz. She shows job openings every class which is really interesting to apply to real experience.. take her and you'll love her
don't take her. I was making an A in the class (its easy) but then I used the wrong font for the final project (which was most of our grade and we worked on it almost all semester) so she failed me for that project and I got a C in the class. BECAUSE OF THE WRONG FONT.
Great person, she's a professional and will talk to you about how to actually get work and what actually happens in the professional writing world. A good resource for anyone who really wants to go into the field too. A lot of homework, but its like 10 questions a night and you can redo it if u want
I took her the very first semester she was at UNCW. Judging from the responses of others, she may have settled in since then. This woman was the most unorganized professor I ever had at the university. She'd ramble on about very unimportant things and go over the time period doing so. Drove my whole class crazy.
Ms. Mathews knows her stuff but can be very condescending. There is a lot of homework, but you can keep redoing it until you get it right. The quzzes are open book but are still difficult, because none of the answers are clear cut. She will let you appeal if you think you are right and gives bonuses to make up for missed questions.
Mathews is a hard-ass but you learn A LOT from her class. I hated it while I was taking it, but eventually realized how much I had actually taken in
Ms. Matthews is weird. Her teaching style is unusual, but effective. However, she is not a kind woman. She has little respect for her students and is condescending. I do not recommend taking her EVER! Bad teacher!
Extremely condescending. Little to no respect for her students. Assumes that they know nothing about editing. Told my class that they weren't qualified for numerous jobs because we had no experience. Didn't learn anything in the class I didn't already know.
Ms. Mathews is an unusual teacher, but she knows her stuff and you will learn a LOT if you go to class and do the homework (which is mostly online and she lets you re-do it until you get it 100% right) tests are open-book but still make sure to study. She is very funny but can be sometimes condescending. Very enjoyable class.
Ms. Mathews knows her stuff...she is realistic and lets you know what to expect in the field. she may come off as condescending to some people, but it is only because she is realistic and wants you to succeed after college. take her class; you will learn so much.
She holds high standards for students and does not put up with anything less than your best effort. She taught me a lot about editing, english and the print media. There are daily hw assignments for 1st half of semester and a challenging project in which you create every aspect of two pages of a newspaper in InDesign. TAKE THIS CLASS,you'll benefit
This teacher is horrible. Once you get on her bad side or question her tactics, she holds a grudge against you. She is scarcastic and her online test are different from the study quizzes and homework. She is not helpful at all. Don't take her.
She is an awesome teacher and is there for you if you need help. Just make sure you do all your homework and you'll be good!
Very cool teacher; professional and to the point. This is definitely a no-BS kind of lady. She has done her time in the publishing/editing field and has a wealth of knowledge to share; if you're willing to work, that is. Open-book exams, repeatable online quizzes; the ball is in your court in this class. Hard work will get you a good grade.
She is actually a pretty nice lady and is passionate about what she teaches, but gah, can she get annoying at times. She definitely likes to hear herself talk...about herself. The constant online quizzes also become cumbersome, but you can retake them, so definitely utilize that option. Definitely take the final project very seriously!
She may seem really tough at first, but once you get to know her, you'll see that she is really fantastic. She is extrememly compassionate and has helped me through some tough times. I think she's an amazing woman. Just make sure you're on top of your game...after all, that's all she really wants--is to make her students the best they can be.
I have taken Mathews for three classes now. I did learn from her, and at times she can be entertaining. But overall, she is condescending and saracastic. She loves to hear herself talk and bashes anything you write for her. After the three classes I had with her, I don't think I've gotten positive feedback on one thing. I now hate her.
She can be tough at times, but she knows what she's talking about and you can learn a lot from her. She was also very understanding when one of my relative died and I had to miss class for the midterm. Just do your work and pay attention!
If you love to be critized and have someone breathing down your neck EVERY class then its a wonderful class. If not, I suggest you stay away.
The frist class she will hark on how easy it all is, all the answers are in the book. Well, some aren't, and the midterm is impossible. It's only 20 Questions, sure, but in each question is five other ones. So show up, and be ready to be talked down upon. No one knows as much as she does, and she will let you know that, every single day in class!!
I love Ms. Mathews. She seems tough, but she really does want you to learn in her class. As long as you put a little effort into her class, it's an easy A. You can do the online homework as many times as you want (and it gives you the answers after the first time). Excellent teacher, she knows her stuff!
You will write a lot in this class. Five page papers are due every week, and sometimes twice a week. However, you get the chance to re-write every paper you turn in for a better grade. It may have been a tough class, but I can honestly say that my writing has improved greatly because of this class. Take this course, but only if you have the guts.
If you want to go into the world of journalism, take her classes. Yes, she is a harsh critic, but she just wants to motivate you to turn in your best work. I've learned more in her ENG 310 and 311 classes than I have in any other class at UNCW.
She is not very nice. Will not go out of her way to help you, if you need it. Her class is very repetitive and kind of gets old after the first week of doing the same thing over and over. If you have a problem dont go to her because she has no sympathy for anyone. And she is always right so don't bother arguing with her.
She is mean and thinks she knows everything. I would not reccomend her class to anyone. She likes to call people out and make them look stupid in front of the class b/c they are not editing masters. She treats her students like first graders and her assignments are the same thing over and over. If you like being treated like a two yr old take her.
Rewrite, rewrite, rewrite. Just as long as you meet all of your deadlines you can rewrite everything up to an A. Rewrite all semester though because she's a tough grader and usually gives every first draft a D+ or C-.
This woman is an amazing professor. She is very tough but in a way that will push you to become better. Taking this class has just reinforced my desire to enter the journalism field. She is nice but she is not going to sugar coat anything. If you want to be a serious reporter take her because you will learn a lot.
Not going to sugarcoat it for you, it's a hard class and sometimes Mathews can seem a little strict but she is the best teacher I have ever had, particuarly if you are going into the editing field. Be prepared for a lot of work. YOU NEED TO TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Horrible. The final is TREMENDOUSLY tedious and she will call you out in front of the class. Don't take this course if you have weak skin or if you don't have to, because the stress and feeling of failure even when you feel you are doing good work is not worth it.
Took three of her classes. Hoenstly, I almost split when I realized how hard it was going to be. But I stuck with it, and I don't think I've ever learned more from a professor at UNCW. She is blunt, but not mean. If you can't handle getting your work criticized, then avoid. The harder you push yourself, the more you learn.
Ms. Mathews really knows what she is talking about. She is not shy about calling you out for being lazy. Expect a lot of work, but if you do it, you will get a good grade. She is very interested in helping her students but you have to ask. Ms Mathews is also very particular but very practical. I would definitely take another class with her.
Ms. Mathews is very knowledgeable when it comes to being a critic since she was one for many years. She expects a lot from students but it willing to help. It is a very hard class that requires a lot of work and time. Do not take more than one of her classes at one time (I did that) Overall she is a nice lady but you will be very stressed out.
Okay, a lot of people do not like this lady because she is harsh. She is only harsh if you slack. Just do the work and she will absolutely love you. If you want an easy class, however, this isnt it. She is actually a sweetheart if you manage to try in her class. Trust me, she is not as bad as everyone says. Just be brave and find out for yourself.
Ms. Mathews is one of the toughest teachers that I have ever had. She is an extremely tough grader and at times the work feels endless. That being said, she is also one of the best teachers I have ever had. I learned more about writing in her class then I have in any other class at UNCW. All the stress is worth it in the end.
Matthews is tough, takes no excuses, and will call you out. But you learn a LOT, including a great program to put on your resume. You use all the books, so get them! Most of the quizzes are open book, but you still need to study. If everyone does bad on the midterm, she'll curve it. its not as hard as everyone says if you put effort into it
The worst professor I have ever met at UNCW. Absolutely awful in every way and should lose her job. She does not encourage students to be better but rather puts them down and discourages them.
Not gonna lie, Shirley Mathews really knows what she is talking about but is one of the toughest graders I have ever faced. She is not afraid to call you out and tell you that you're completely wrong. You will get a lot of help (writinggrammatical)but, be prepared to work hard.
Great teacher but made me work for an A. If you're looking to get by with an English class ,this isn't the class for you.
A totalitarian style class in which its Shirley's way or the high way. Would be a fun course to take under a different professor. Do not recommend.
Mathews was one of the hardest professors I have ever taken, but I learned so much from her class. She grades tough so make sure you're on top of things, but she gives good feedback and allows rewrites. All the work is done outside of class but she assigns fun events and gives a TON of extra credit, so there's no reason someone shouldn't do well.
Alright, originally I was going to write a scathing review for Mrs. Mathews. She was without a doubt the hardest professor I have ever had. She made my life hell for a semester but I went to class everyday and participated and ended up passing with an A. She will be tough and she will make you work but if you participate, you'll do fine.
Mrs. Mathews is one of the best professors at UNCW. If your goal is to get an easy A in a class, with little effort, you should probably avoid her. If your goal is to learn from a woman with a seemingly limitless expertise, who will challenge you and ultimately leave you with superior knowledge in the area, take her class!
Professor Shirley was the most unclear professor that I have ever had at UNCW. She gives assignments, fails to elaborate on how she wants you to complete them, then grades extremely critically. She will also willingly embarrass you in front of the class if she sees that you are not paying attention.
Ms. Mathews is absolutely awful. I have never sat in a classroom with amore disrespectful professor. She is rude and belittle's you and has no shame in doing it. She will tell you that you will never be good enough and won't think twice about it. Do not take this class if you don't have to. She will destroy your outlook on your future.
Is honestly pretty condescending. Her tutorials for inDesign are vague and really don't help much - be prepared to spend a lot of time fiddling with the program on your own. Don't ask her questions, either, it will just make you more stressed out.
Do NOT take this class with this teacher. She is the most confusing and condescending teacher I have ever had. She is a tough grader. I worked extremely hard in this class and nothing was good enough for her. Too intense for an intro class.
Fine, I guess, but questionable. Was very condescending and not someone I looked forward to interacting with. Wasn't very encouraging. Once advised the class that if you're going to a work event and other people are drinking, you should drink too so you don't look uptight. Not good advice IMO - employers need leaders, not followers.
Ms. Mathews is a terrible teacher, treats her students like they're stupid, belittles and humiliates them. Her INTRO to Journalism class was the most rigorous class I have ever taken, requiring you to do a ridiculous amount of work outside the class. Didn't supply a rubric for any of her assignments. I am a straight A student and received a D.
I'll be honest and say it was truly a miracle I managed to get an A in her class. All the criticism you'll see of her on here is 100% true. Don't think it'll be different for you, because it won't be. She's incredibly critical on assignments for an intro course and she really is condescending in her attitude. Just take the class with someone else.
By far the worst professor I have had in my time at UNCW. This class is labeled an "intro" class but it is far from it. She expects students to be perfect writers ready to work at a newspaper. She talks down to her students like they're stupid. I was personally insulted during a meeting even. She is unapproachable. Do NOT take this class!
Worst teacher I have ever had. She is rude, makes you feel like you are an idiot and definitely does not like you if you aren't a english major. She grades extremely harsh and takes attendance everyday. Lots of outside of the classroom assignments. HomeworkTONS!!! I would not recommend this teacher at all.
This is the worst professor I've had at UNCW. First of all the deadlines for every assignment/homework is 6 am. Tons of homework and a ridiculously hard grader. Expects you to be a newspaper-ready writer the moment you walk in the door. Makes students feel stupid in private meeting and in from of the entire class. Do not take her for anything!!!!
Professor Mathews is a difficult professor for an introductory English class. She grades essays on an impossible standard. Even after going to the writing center grades only went up a few points. She left comments that contradicted each other and were very general.I don't recommend this professor if you are looking for a class to breeze through.
Ms. Mathews's journalism and editing courses are no joke, and if you treat them seriously your writing and editing will improve. Intro to Journalism was my toughest class, but it also left me feeling the most satisfied knowing how much I had improved. I have witnessed that she makes writers and editors better. Take her if you want to write well.
DO NOT TAKE HER. She is the worst teacher I have ever had.
Matthews is very clear in her expectations, but if you're willing to work you'll learn a lot.
I took her class online, and I will say it was much better than sitting in an actual class for English. She grades pretty tough, however, on all the papers you get "rewrites" and you're allowed to fix any mistakes. Overall, if you work hard, you will do really well in the course.
This class was so easy and super good. If you need an english class take this one. She gives you quizzes that are super easy to pass even without reading the textbooks. on your essays, you have a rewrite which she tell you what needs to be fixed
Professor Mathews is an excellent teacher! I learned so much in her online class and her feedback made it easy to get a good grade on essays. There are quiz and research journal grades so your whole grade isn't dependent on the essays. I would definitely recommend her for ENG 201!
She is HARD. but, it's worth it to take her because you'll learn a lot and improve a lot. She's also pretty hilarious, so if nothing else you'll be entertained. This class is not an easy A by any means, but you can get a B pretty easily. Overall, this class kicked my butt but I would take it again simply because you truly do improve so much!
Condescending attitude everyday in class, doesn't focus on teaching just telling you what you're doing wrong. Takes the fun out of writing.
She calls on people a lot in class, so get ready for that. There's quite a lot of extra credit she offers, but it's not easy stuff. You really have to apply yourself in this class, but the end result is a serious improvement in your skills, and some work that you'll be pretty proud of!
Horrible. She doesnt actually teach anything. Questions were passed over with a its in the book type answer. She expects that the student is already an amateur journalist and knows exactly what she is talking about. If you are a commuter student like myself, do not take this class. 8 mini assignments after hours on campus to report on.
She is not going to pussy-foot around your feelings. If you want to get better at writing, take this course. If you want to breeze through college and start your writing career at Walmart, go take another course. She is serious and a professional with many years of experience. She will tell you like it is and give you valuable feedback. Awesome!
The course is designed to make you pass, however the teachers harsh grading makes it very hard to keep up. Not approachable- Will look you right in your face like your stupid if you have a question. Keep in mind, she's been doing this for years and you will be in a intro class (she will grade you as if you are submitting to her ENG Dep. homepage)
This class made me not want to be a journalism major anymore. If you can avoid taking a class with her, do so at all costs.
I wouldn't suggest taking her if you aren't interested in journalism it's a very hands-on class that requires you to write and attend campus events to report on, but she will make you a better writer if you take this class she has unlimited extra credit and rewards those that really put in effort and show improvement no final exam - video instead
Mathews is tough. If you are not wanting to pursue a career in journalism, you should not consider taking this class. She grades harshly and does not always give ample feedback. This is one of those classes you "learn" through failure. There is a lot of homework, but it makes for good practice.
Don't take this if you don't want to do anything with journalism. She's really nice, but expects a lot, and most of the class work is out of class and takes a lot of time. Overall just really difficult to even pass this class.
Dr. Mathews was tough, don't get me wrong. However, I feel that I gained more skill in writing in this course than I ever have in any course. You are required to attend many events to report on in class and must to get a good grade. I am a commuter and have a job and I was still able to get the job done. Not to mention, she was hilarious!
Unfortunately, I was forced by my advisor to take this woman twice for my major/minor. Worst mistake of my life. Shirley uses outdated textbooks and methods of fear and intimidation to teach you. She makes it impossible to get a good grade in her class even if you do all the work. She has no problem giving you a zero for something you did.
Intro Journ 202 DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS She is not a nice person. I am an A student, and I dropped this class after the add/drop date (first time doing that). You have to go to a lot of assignments outside of class. HW is busywork. She will not work with you. I have learned nothing about journalism.
if you go to class, you'll become a better writer. so much outside of class participation activities like plays, food reviews, and films. Really makes you work for your grade and is a TOUGH grader.
If I could take just about any course with Ms. Mathews I most definitely would. Do not take her classes unless you are ready to put in A LOT of work and become a better writer. Very strict deadlines and lots of them. Grades on lots of assignments which is great. Lectures are entertaining and she devotes most of the class time to what students want.
i dropped her 310 class 2 semesters in a row before i inevitably had to take it to graduate. such an arrogant, mean lady. an incomprehensible amount of meaningless homework in which only wasted time and energy. the amount of time i spent doing work for this class vs what i learned does NOT add up.
Worst teacher I had at UNCW and what is wrong with higher education. Busy work that doesnt teach. This lady should not be teaching anyone. She is so arrogant yet so ineffective at her own profession. One of the few weed out classes in the English major, but is nothing you will use going forward. Sad thinking about educators like this.
Please, take it from me, do not take her for any class. She is blunt (not in the good way), and makes absolutely no exceptions for any of her students. I took her ENG 310 class online during COVID. Canvas stopped working at the last minute when I tried to submit an assignment and she did not care. If you want caring or understanding, shes not it.
Doesn't give a lot of feedback. Subtracts heavily for minor errors
I took ENG201 online and was worried when I read the syllabus because it seemed a little harsh. However, if you're good at writing, put in the work, and stay on top of due dates, you'll get a good grade. Professor Mathews was good at communicating and graded fairly. (Just don't forget to say "Dear Ms. Mathews" or she won't answer your emails haha).
Professor Matthews is so great at journalism and is very qualified to teach journalism classes. However, she is an awful professor and lacks any sort of empathy. Most of the work assigned is busy work that she gives little to no information on how to complete. I learned by failure in the course and made an A but with no help from Matthews.
After reading some of the reviews I was somewhat nervous to take her class, but I have absolutely loved it! There are only 3 essays and one project, but also small quizzes and journal assignments. There is a good amount of assignments, but they don't take long at all. She also allows rewrites for each essay to improve your original grade!
Ms. Mathews is by far the most scrutinizing, narcissistic, ill-willed professor I have ever had the displeasure of meeting at UNCW. I have made As in every English class I've ever taken, but got a C in hers. Much of the grammar she teaches is either outdated or just plain incorrect, so good luck getting anything right on her 10+ weekly assignments.
Y'all beware if you take this professor. She is very tough and does not accept any late work. I did take her online and there was so much coursework. I took this class to get a break from taking in-person classes and her constant assignments did not provide any sort of relief. I would encourage you to find another professor.
Deadlines are not extensional, even if she put the wrong date on the syllabus. There is about 4 quizzes every week along with papers due.
Very negative, offers little guidance, other then to send you to the writing center, they aren't that helpful either. She will ridicule your work heavily while misspelling her suggestions as well. She will not give an extension if you are in an accident/at the hospital due to her excuse of "you can work ahead". Incredibly frustrating if you care.
Probably the worst professor I've ever had, do not take her. Gives the most unclear and round about explanations for assignments. Super hard and unrealistic grader, expects you to pull data from your source that your source simply does not have. Basically lives in her own world and expects you to magically have and do things that aren't real.
Overall just difficult to understand her instructions and if you email for clarification you won't get very much. I don't understand her method of grading at all and can be an extremely tough grader. Also just such a large amount of work to do all in different areas during one week (grammar quizzes, essays, MLA quizzes, etc)
While this class had a lot of work surrounding it, there were opportunities to better your grade for everything. Rewrites were offered for all 4 essays, and if you take her advice, you will get a 100. There were several quizzes, but each quiz had two attempts. I quite liked Pro. Mathews, and if you put time into her course, it will be an easy A.
Awful professor with no capability of empathy. Made racist comments that were so bad we emailed the Eng. Dept. Handed in an assignment due at 11:59 at 12:01 (Canvas problems); gave me a 0, which dropped my final course grade from an A to C. My shrink emailed her about my mental health; Shirley told me to "suck it up." Harsh grader w/ no feedback.
She is can be a bit disrespectful with giving back feedback but she does answer her messages quickly.
READ THIS. Do not be afraid of this class. Yes, the class is a lot of work and she is a tough grader. BUT as long as you actually read her instructions clearly you will be capable of getting A+ on the essays and in the class as a whole. As long as you manage your time and actually submit quality work, you will get a good grade in this class.
She's alright. She can come off as rude in feedback and emails, but at least she tries to give a decent amount of feedback if you try. She is an older professor, so I didn't think much of it. Lots of quizzes; some weeks have more work than others, but it depends if you want to work ahead. She thinks this is the only class you have, though.
She's an alright professor. She can come off as rude, but she clearly cares about her students doing well in her class. In feedback, emails, and such, her tone can be hard to read because she simultaneously comes off as harsh and chill. LOTS of work, so be prepared, but you will succeed if you do everything in the instructions specifically.
If you're willing to plan ahead and capable of managing a decent sized workload, take Ms. Mathews' class. She does give a lot of work, but it's all available from day one, with examples/rubrics to "ace" each assignment. She is also a tough grader, but she's fair and very thorough when providing feedback on your 1st drafts. (She accepts 2nd drafts!)
Ms. Mathews is tough; you will definately have to work for your grade in this class. She is a stickler for rules/directions/due dates, so don't except flexibility there. However, her class is very consistent with deadlines, which makes managing them way easier. Also, she is very responsive to emails/questions, which is also super helpful.
She will definitely mark you for silly mistakes rather than the actual work. If you label your word document wrong, 20 point deduction. If you turn in a google doc rather than a word doc, you will receive a 0. If she cannot open it, she will give you a 0, she is not going to email you to ask for permission.
Professor Mathews simply is the worst experience I have ever had in an educational setting. She is an over-the-top harsh grader and is very difficult to reach over email as she just refers back to the original instructions as if I haven't read them over five times already.
This class had so many essays. She's also a super hard grader but if you put in a lot of effort it is possible to get an A. She responded decently fast to my emails but she's not the best at answering questions. Her instructions for assignments are so long and she is SO strict on everything. Overall, take another professor, but it wasn't horrible.
Was honestly so rude and marked you on dumb mistakes. She left no room for any grammatical errors and had a huge workload. The only positive praise I ever got was on my final project. Even though she was tough I still got an A. Would not recommend if you can get another professor but wasn't terrible.
I enjoyed her class and personality. She tells you how it is and some don't like that, but I appreciate honesty. She is a tough love kind of person. You have to earn your grade because she will not just give it to you. If you want to be coddled, don't take her. If you want learn and be held accountable, she is the one.
Professor Mathews is a tough grader, but if you follow her instructions carefully, you can succeed. She provides detailed feedback and accepts revisions. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for preparing for quizzes and staying on top of the workload.
This professor is inconsiderate, and often very rude. Her workload is extremely heavy, and she is one of the harshest graders I have ever had at UNCW. I DO NOT recommend this professor at all, especially if you are not fluent in old fashioned grammar.
This teacher truly is one of the most difficult people to deal with. She bans certain topics to write about like homosexuality, abortions and religion. Attending a school that promotes inclusion, it is very disparaging to see that a teacher is hindering certain topics based off of her beliefs. Do not take this class at ALL.
This woman is on a power trip. She is a very harsh grader but yet only leaves two minuscule comments that do not warrant the grade given. She truly should not be an educator in any capacity. I have asked another teacher and a teaching lab person what they think I should receive on an assignment, they both said at very least a B, she gave me 50.
She was honestly condescending with me whenever I asked any questions about essays, her grading is extremely harsh and she gives no extensions/no flexibility at all. It is her way or you fail, one of the hardest English class I have ever taken.
Do not take this professor. She grades very harshly! I have gotten points off for honest mistakes. In one of the homework assignments, she took 5 points off just because I accidentally added another t in her name, and took 20 points off for putting the title of my paper the title first and name second.
Wrote a guy's name wrong in my paper twice and she took 20 points off for it. Unbelievable.
She wants her students to do their best, but she is an insanely tough grader and won't accept any late assignments, no matter if there is a hurricane or lockdown at the school. She doesn't do the To-Do function in Canvas, so you'll have to really remember the due dates. If you don't want a hard semester, don't take her class.
