Great teacher...easy class...

Very fun!
Helpful with difficult material. Hard tests

I loved her class and I got an A+ because I really understand her.
She's great...actually makes Math kinda fun
She is A great teacher, and I recommed her to anyone.
I think Shirley is freaking cool as hell she is very helpful and she really helps her students. I reccomend her to anyone you will work in her class but most importantly you will learn a lot. She reaally tries to help her students a lot. Good teacher!!!!!
She is extremely helpful, and her notes are very clear. Ask questions if you're unsure. She is totally awesome, especially for a newer teacher.
Cool teacher, probably number one calc teacher in grossmont. Very helpful and explains all the material extensively and makes sure everyone understands before going on. Great teacher.
Teacher is really nice - to both guys and girls. Interested in seeing everyone pass her class and understand it. Only downfall was that tests were so much harder than quizzes and some things didn't even look familiar though. I dropped this class.
This is my favorite teacher. She makes sure you understand everything. I got an A+ and I still remember what I learned.

She's very nice but has a disorganized teaching style. She breezes through hard lessons and dwells on easy ones. She's also quite moody, which affects the level difficulty in her tests. If you want a teacher that's straight forward, she's not it!
One of the best math teachers in San Diego. She is not just very helpful, but she also knows math very much. Mrs. Pereira and Mr. Davis are the two best teachers in Grossmont. I really appreciate them. I really wish she teaches MATH281 or higher.
Miss Pereira knows what she's teaching and seems to really care about her students! It's not easy, but she goes over problems you don't understand. I can't wait to take her next math class. Her class really is fun!!
Miss Pereira is a pleasant teacher to have. She can detect your confusion through your facial expressions, and when she does, she stops and asks if you understand. She also has an excellent sense of humor, and is polite to EVERYONE in the class.TakeClass!
She always has time to answer your questions and trys to make sure that everyone is understanding the topic. Quizzes are very straight forward and the test reviews are too. Her tests are hard, they are conceptual based, not too much number crunching.
She is one of the nicest teachers I have ever met. She is also very funny and makes math fun to learn. That's a very rare skill to have. However, her tests are fairly hard. Take her anyway, because she's cool.
Once again, a wonderful teacher! Fair exams and quizzes and easy if you study hard. Bonuses at the end of all exams (even final) to boost your grade up. Very friendly and helpful...takes time to help all students.
SHE IS SOMETIMES UNCLEAR, SHE BREEZES THROUGH THE MATERIAL, OVERALL HARD...
Awsome!! Teaches with her enthuasim. Her teaching is very clear, even for me, international student.
Lectures well, effective teaching, very helpful, and connects great with the class!
dosent explain well
She is a good teacher but you cannot miss any homework and class it's fatal. But over all she does help alot and is consistant in making sure everyone is understanding! "You guys doing all right!"
She loves what she does, and it shows. Her enthusiam and willingness to go back to basics to help someone understand are awesome.
She's and awesome teacher, takes the time to explain things if unclear. Always willing to help you out- and she's HOT!.
She wants her students to do well and gives points for everything done well! She is really cool and is willing to do almost anyhting to help you understand what is going on. She will even go one on one to help you!
This teacher is interested in her teaching, but she gives you reviews for tests & nothing is on her test that was on the review. I dreaded the class! Don't take her, you'll regret it. Take Ms. Ward at Mesa College instead. BIG DIFFERENCE!
She is a great teacher. You can tell she loves math and loves to teach. Very easy to understand and loves to take time for examples. She hands out practice tests which are almost identical to the real tests. So unless your an idiot you will Ace it.
This teacher, excuse my language, sucks! She is just.. bad! She's unclear, she goes through the material really really fast. She gives tests on material we honestly never covered. Instead of helping out her students, she makes it a lot harder for them.
Don't take this professor for this class at least, it's mainly a theory class and while she really understands it and you can understand what's going on in class, the homework has nothing to do with class work. This is a hard class made worse by a teacher who doesn't know how to teach.
Ms. Pereira rocks! She is so awesome. I loved her teaching style. Never a boring minute, and I absolutely abhored math before this. She isn't the easiest teacher.but she is soooo willing to help.
She rocks hardcore. Extremly nice, extremly understanding on the burden we students have in many other classes. Stats was very tough, but she made it easier. Just ask her to printout how she did the homework.

She is a helpful, understanding, enthusiastic teacher. She is is willing to take extra time to help you understand! The concepts taught in this class are abstract and complicated, but she uses visuals and other methods of teaching. She does use homework problems for test questions.
She is serious about her math! If you take math 110 - she will prepare you for the upper level math courses. Her exams are a little hard! However, Math 176 & 180 - she is torture! She makes you think outside the box, even though you don't understand the basics. Take someone else for MAth 176 & 180
Shirly is O.K teacher however I am an A student and I struggled to get a C in this class. She made mistakes on EVERY one of my exams ....check your exams...if you got a bad grade, chances are she messed up on grading your exam. one word- FLAKE
This was the worst teacher I have ever had in my life! I've taken many math classes and have never had such a hard time. She was unclear, unhelpful and rude when you question her teaching style. She should not be teaching today. Don't even bother with her reviews because they are nothing like what is on the actual test. AVOID HER CLASS!
Overall, very helpful and willing to answer any question you have. Sometimes she sped through material, but the reviews were helpful. As long as you try she'll she and give you a passing grade.
excellent professor!!! sometimes it felt as if we moved a little quickly. however, i think that was a result of the in-depth review she would offer daily on the previous day's homework. extremely helpful and encouraged class participation...she didnt make you feel intimidated for not being a math genius. excellente shirley!!
she sucks, very unclear and i asked her for help but she never had any time. she has teacher's pets and helps them on everything and makes so many mistakes
Ms. Pereira doesn't cooperate with students who don't learn very quickly. Blames all comprehension problems on not doing the homework, even if you show her your homework! Mildy entertaining but strict and unhelpful.
Class is hard, the pace is very fast, if you fall behind early, there is virtually no hope for you.
Demands more from her students than herself. Does not prepare you for her poorly constructed tests. She seems at first cool and easy going, but is unapproachable, rude, and condescending just beneath that. There are laid back teachers who just want you to get the point, and mathematicians who deal with minutia, don't mistake her for either.
She is pretty cool. She gives a list of homework at the begining of the semester. She doesnt collect the homework, but you should do it. It helps you to practice the stuff you learn in class. And you should always study for the tests. Even if its an hour before-hand. If you have questions, she is pretty good with answering everyone.
She's great! Very down to earth. and very helpful and encouraging.
She indeed answers all homework questions. A little bit unprepared and disorganized. She do not really engage in going deep, rather very, very shallw. But goes very deep on tests and especially quizes. If you are self motivated and can do well by yourself, take her. Do not expect too much from her, go deepr by yorself. However, very fair in gradin
she was great, helpful and kindda easy. No homework collection, review for every single test (still had to look at all of your homeworks but the reviews helped. Quizzez were every week but weren't hard at all. They were just like other reviews. This class was relaxing.
Fairly easy class. She is often unorganized, and copies problems on the board wrong. When you ask for help she is usually brief, not very helpful. Easy class, we get to use lots of notes for tests and quizes. We only had about 6 homework assignments the whole semester too.
Oh no, so unclear and confusing. I love math and she still managed to confuse me by messing up the problems all the time and doesn't properly prepare you for tests. You can use notes and stuff and theres not much homework but if you struggle with math AT ALL dont do it.
Worst teacher I've ever had! She never made any sense! And she didn't even know how to explain herself to try to make sense. She wrote her own word problems that didn't make sense, and she would make mistakes and come up with the wrong answers. She's Horrible
Math is difficult for me, but I really enjoyed her class. She was encouraging and was willing to review material. Overall, the best math class I attended at Grossmont.
Nice person but horrible teacher. She often copied problems incorrectly and was very unorganized. Forget trying to get help from her after class either. Her answers were often short and even more confusing. She has her favorites in class and will get off track by talking about herself! Do not take her if you aren't a math person!!!
a nice person, but very unorganized. She is constantly corrected in class by her own students and on our final review packet some of the answers on the answer sheet were done completely incorrectly.
This class was easy for me but I think for others, it was very difficult. Although she is a very nice person, she's super confusing when she's teaching. Defninitely do the homework so that you understand the material better.
Worst teacher I have ever had! She would create her own examples then rarely know how to actually finish them. Her tests are nothing like her reviews. She has no idea what she is talking about half the time, and if she does, it is very difficult to understand what she is actually trying to say.
I love MATH so much, but getting her as a professor made me hate math! She is the most unorganized, unrelatable professor EVER! Half the time shes teaching, she doesn't even KNOW WHAT SHES DOING! The way to pass her class- abuse the math lab, do A TON of practice questions, HOMEWORK A MUST! frankly, I wouldn't take her as a professor.
The comments below are true! She is constantly being corrected by her own students. She is WAY UNCLEAR! She would jump from one topic to another... no one could keep up with her. She does not explain very well, especially since its math and her tests are long and hard. DON'T TAKE HER!!... I wish I took this class with another teacher.
She is helpful and always cheery/nice. Its true that students assist her while she teaches but mostly just for small insignificant things; nothing major or critical. Bottom line is that she teaches the content 100%. Hate the subject, not her. Stay positive and study a little and you will pass.
Professor Pereira is one of the best math instructors I have ever meet. Math is a very challenging subjects. She wants u to think, learn visualizing the material, and be able to apply it in real life. That is why (in my opinion) she spends most of the time teaching the content. If math or engineering is your major WAKE UP u have to work hard. Othe
Very friendly and will calmly take you through some of the roughest material in calculus. Sometimes she's a little sneaky but overall if you want to master calculus and have a relaxed teaching environment to do so, then this is the place for you. There are many comments regarding her poor teaching habits and most from students w/o STUDY HABITS!!!!!
A little eccentric and off topic at times, but always interesting and friendly. She really understands and enjoys math, so it makes it seem that much easier to understand. Really helps you get how kids think about math! Easy and fun course; definitely would reccommend her.
She is not organize, doesn't care about students grade. Doesn't help after class. I weak with math and I worked hard on my homework, trying to do my best, but she didn't care, and I get a "D". She doesn't explain clearly. She doesn't care for students who want pass but can't, she couldn't even help them. Go to tutoring center.
The best math professor I had so far at Grossmont College. Math 280 is not easy. You have to study hard. For math major her class will be a very easy (just a piece of cake).
This teacher is faboulous
Very helpful teacher who explains the course work well.
A fantastic Math instructor. I am not a math person at all and for the first time in my life I feel like I am a capable math studt. To those who suggest that Shirley doesn't care about her studts or that she does not make her self available is not accurate. She is always suggesting people take advantage of her office hours which are alot.Take her
She doesn't do any examples and on the occasion which she does, hardly ever gets the answers right. She'll encourage you to come to her office but when you do, she'll tell you to read the book. I don't recommend her for any higher level classes. If you absolutely have to take her, consider it a self-study class because this teacher is useless.
You could tell she was inexperienced in teaching math 281. I felt like we talked about math more than doing examples which did make it a self taught class. Test are hard.
This teacher seems to be close to useless. She starts problem examples but doesn't finish them. You go to class and realize that you have to teach yourself the material from the beginning anyways. I wouldn't recommend taking this teacher
She means well but doesn't teach the course well. She seems to make some things much more difficult than they are. I should have waited to take Calc3 with another instructor.
It's important to study outside of class and stay on top of your homework assignments. She means well, and although she's been teaching higher division math for over ten years, her teaching methods are not organized. She never finishes examples that she starts, and during lectures, she doesn't do a variety of problems.Attendance isn't important.
I'm shocked with all these negativity in the recent ratings, I thought Pereira was a great teacher for Calc III. I think it has to do more with the subject matter than her teaching as any of the higher level math courses are challenging. I do believe this is a self-teaching class and the grade you'll get will reflect that perseverance in her class
she was an ok teacher some things were made harder than what the should have been. You will need the book for homework..sometimes she goes off subject but she is really helpful just go to her office. test are pretty easy she explains everything that will be on test.
This teacher is nice and grades easy but made grading errors on 3/4 of my tests, makes me wonder about my final. The topics in 281 aren't too difficult, the way she presented the material seemed to jumble things, lectures almost useless, had 2 spend xtra time teaching myself because of this.Got an A anyway. Not recommended if you're taking a full load.
TO ME she had next to no structure in her teaching methods.Solutions to exams not provided (which led me to believe she didn't stand behind her work).Approach to the subject matter almost made me despise Calc3.Most of the classes seemed like a waste of time due to the lack of organization.A systematic approach would benefit future 281 students.
she is a very good teacher the structure she uses is wonderful and she cares about her students. I would suggest taking her for any math... She explains the material really well and answers any questions that you may have!!!
Class was extremely difficult!!! She was however extremely helpful. She is very well organized and clear in her teaching techniques!!!
Shirley is one of the best math teachers at Grossmont. She alway takes her time to help her students learn the concepts. She can be a little confusing at times, but it probably goes with the territory of a math class. If you struggle w math take shirley. She made math class fun
Shirley was the BEST introduction back to Algebra I could have asked for. She is funny, interesting, makes subject matter clear, checks in with you to be sure you understand. She is the BEST math professor I have ever met and she knows her stuff. If you get her class, you are lucky and you will enjoy.
She's really nice and has a sense of humor. She's kind of unorganized however. She doesn't always have a review for us before the test and she never knows what's going to be on the tests sometimes because she hasn't written it yet, so we never knew what to really expect. She adds other material from former sections on the test too.
Shirley was such a great am teacher - wish I could have had her again for algebra. Lectures were clear and interesting. She was always available to help explain. She sincerely cares if you get it. And she is really funny. Highly recommend her for all math subjects.
Awesome teacher overall. Very helpful. She will teach you everything you need to know to move onto high level math. Take her class if you can for sure!
Great teacher. If you participate, and do the work on time you will do fine. She is fun and helpful, but it's on you to get her help, because it's college people, time to be responsible.
great teacher if you are someone who are conversant during class,or are habitually late, or the class clown, however if you are someone who is an overachiever, or someone who just loves to learn for the sheer joy of it, beware, you may be subject to unwarranted criticism, impatience towards difficult or repeated problems and late test returns.
She's a great teacher and made the terrifying Calc II easy. I highly recommend her and would take her again. I also recommend buying the WebAssign access instead of the textbook.
Pretty chill teacher, usually in a good mood. Pretty straight forward tests, nothing ever too tricky.
Took her stats class and I understood her way more than my high school teacher! She knows her stuff and she will clarify anything! She only has 3 tests and homework is due the day of the exam. No midterm, and final is cumulative. Take her class for an awesome math teacher!
This was a new class being piloted for students with non math-based majors, like liberal arts. Professor Pereira was great! I hadn't been to a math class in years. She taught material in a way that was easy to understand. Most importantly, she was available to us and really wanted to help us all succeed. You could tell that MATH is her jam!
Could not be happier what I have learned in her class! She is so sweet and kinda dorky, perfect for education majors. Very helpful and answers all your questions. WE learned a lot about common core and how to approach problems and I feel so much more confident in math.
Shirley is a great person, but she probably has one of the hardest classes Ive ever taken. I missed two days of class due to illness, and it was like I had missed an entire month. I cannot stress enough how important going to class is, and how important taking notes are. Shes a super tough grader on things such as the weekly quizzes and exams.
I was nervous about taking a math class, but Professor Pereira's lectures made it easy to understand and apply. However, the grading weights were stressful going from an A student to a D based on a single (accidentally) missed assignment. Thankfully, I did get to make it up, but I just feel that might be a tad overkill. I liked the class though.
I tried communicating with her about my troubles especially during this time of COVID and she basically didnt care. Ive been to the hospital twice for surgery and amongst a lot else that has been going on and she simply replied to my email with I dont know what you want me to do. But besides that the class is super easy just dont get sick
During the second exam, the power went out in my neighborhood and I failed because the exam was timed. Although I explained the situation to her, she said there was nothing was nothing she could do. As a result of this failed exam, my grade suffered the rest of the semester and I could never get it back to an A+ like it was prior.
Prof. Pereira was one of the best math teachers I have ever had :) I took her for the Spring 2021 semester online and as long as you took some notes during the lectures (which the lectures are not very note heavy at all) and you did the homework, it's an easy A for sure! She is so kind and helpful and very very understanding, take her class!!!!!
Things are not always what they seem. she does not stay on topic, the Homework theres no instruction, not understanding to students, she is very disorganized etc. If you have a disability she is not the teacher for you. she very condescending to students. rude, critical of any questions asked. would not suggest unless already know math.
I searched her here, saw the bad ratings, but she was the only professor available. Hard to communicate with, the site she uses is confusing / out of order, as well as the hw assignments (not having any actual due dates posted). She dropped me with no prior notice or warning. I admit I wasn't doing well, but I was still TRYING. Do not take her.
probably one of the worst experiences I have ever had with a human being. She can't control her temper and says disrespectful things towards students and has a select favorites. as a future educator, she claimed I would never be a good teacher due to spelling errors in my report and should not bother trying to be one. she's made me cry
Professor Shirley was amazing. I'm not much of a math person, but she was always eager to help and encouraged me to set up meetings with her when I struggled. She is not too harsh of a grader. Her(recorded) lectures can be a little lengthy, but she is very in depth and wants you to understand concepts well. Overall, would definitely recommend her.
I am taking her for the second 8-week course, and I enjoy her class. She has been very helpful, and the lectures are very informational. I started off the class wrong because I missed one day and that one day hurt my grade a lot. If I could take her class again but unfortunately, she is retiring this semester.
