she has no clue how to teach.. extremely boring power point lectures... exams arent hard tho.. u just need work on your textbook.
great attitude, she's a new teacher with a lot of chem knowledge and is very helpful. lectures are ok, it helps if you ask questions and participate. exams are easy, assignments are good way to boost your mark.
She is a good person and teacher. However, I should say that the lab guide of chemistry is very uneducated, unintelligent and selfish little silly person. The bad "lab guides" in the chemistry department disappoint good students.
very helpful, powerpoint lectures are kind of like a GIS. quizzes and assignments help boost marks. she learns everybody's name and cares that you are understanding the material
Her intentions are good but she has no teaching style, its boring, and unclear. if you are willing to work, the mark will be fine but having to sit in her class in so painful, get someone else if you can.
her notes and teaching style are scattered and hard to follow. she is one of those teachers that knows a lot but has problems communicating her knowledge to the average chemistry student. you'll learn more from reading your text than you will sitting in class! her midterms are fairly easy and she is a fair marker.
She is a very nice and caring teacher... She just doesn't know how to teach!!! Her notes are scattered and all over the place. I am learning how to teach myself in her class as I don't understand her sumtyms... It's helpful if you ask questions but even so... Your better off doing the practice exercises that she posts on WebCt than in her class!!!
sucks massive ass
The mid-terms suck (censored). Nothing like quizzes or the material she provides as a pre-exam study guide. The time allowed for the second mid-term was insufficient, half the class didn't finish the test. Will not take again.
I agree with the comment of the person below. The midterms that she gives (esp. the one yesterday) was VERY UNFAIR. It's so hard and so long and not enough time. The review packages she gave us were USELESS!! If she's the only one teaching a class, skip it a class, SKIP IT! take it with someone else or at later sem. STAY AWAY! she's the worst...
Her midterms are too long and hard. Not enough time. In my class, half didn't even finish the midterm. Hopefully, the final wouldn't be as bad. I might have to drop the course. I don't think she cares about our GPA. She's killing it with her super hard exams that aren't even anything like the quizzes/assignment. Not recommended.
terrible, very hard midterms, don't have time to finish
Her quizs are easy, but midterms are really horrible, long & hard.
She is nice
Midterms are hard, and too long for 55 min blocks. Potential to do well on exams is lost when one is pressed for time. Provided Study guides are nothing like the tested material on Exams. Over the course of 3 months, my interest in the class has significantly dropped. I am pleased it will soon be over.
her midterms are very long. but at least you dont have to attend her class coz you can just read everything off the webct notes that she gives.
she prepares u for organic chem, which is good. but her method sucks in a sense that quizes are too easy, homeworks are average, midterms are too damn hard. so how are we supposed to kno how to pace things?

Hm...Shirley. Means well, wants to be a good teacher, and probably will be one day. Gives students all the tools to get an A, and gives cut-n-paste exams. Doesn't seem passionate about teaching at 1118 level. Very smart, but has yet to acquire the knack of speaking to students without going beyond their 1118 vocabulary. Not bad, not great.
The key aspects of shirley's class: easy quizzes based from homework, homework is a bonus 5% as long as u do them and SUPER long and hard midterms! The midterms and final will definitely screw you over. She isn't a very good teacher either. Try to do well in the lab part of the course as it will save your mark. It did for me and I ended up ith a B-
She's a Darling!!!
Shirley is a really nice person, and it's obvious that she cares about chem and about her students, but she is still learning about how to be a good teacher. There is no consistancy between assignments and quizzes and the midterms. The class work and assignments do NOT adequately prepair you for anything else. I'm hoping for a better teacher next.
i think the ppl giving bad ratings are fresh out of highschool w/ crummy study habits and hoping to do well in langara. Shirley is a good teacher. very helpful. does not get annoyed when stupid ppl ask a lot of questions. had no fits with the in-class soliloquy guy. its a HARD course, so if you show up to ALL the classes and study, youll do well!
2 drops. serious!! thats all it took. 2 drops of DMSO, and her reaction was done.. IN LESS THAN 2 HOURS. WOW!!
Well, I got 69% on the first midterm and still managed to pull off an A. Her tests are very long, but she did get more and more generous with her marking towards the end of the semester. Class was very, very boring though, although she taught pretty clearly.
It seems clear that we all have the same complaint here--the material and assignments are not consistent with what is tested. And the midterms are absurdly long. She is likely the only one who can finish them. I recognize that she wants to challenge us . . . Beware that your GPA may suffer in this course!
Very intelligent prof - is very keen on helping ou students. Highly recommended.
She is a nice person but not the best of teachers. She advised us to study her study sheets over and over and never tested them really, just tested out of the textbook. Like I said, nice...but terrible class.
omg!the worst chem prof ever.u will regret . Just doesnt know how to teach although she is very intelligent but she cant share her knowledge with student. If u have other option dont take her.
Don't know what the other people on here are talking about. I found her to be an extremely good prof who managed to explain a whole bunch of concepts that I was having trouble with. She's pretty clear in class as long as you go to them and will help you until you understand stuff during her office hours. But I do agree that the exams are too long.
hard teacher, but if you do the work and study hard, you will be rewarded. she was extremely helpful and patient. she is very passionate about teaching and loves organic chemistry which makes the subject more enjoyable for the students.
she let students copy the notes in the class, she almost explain all the concepts during the class but it is not helpful to the quizzes and midterms cuz she doesn't hv any examples.her midterms r super hard...she's a very hard teacher. if u r not very good at chem, do not take her class...
She's really good. She's actually explaining to you the detail in class and the note she gives are helpful. however, her quiz and exam are really hard that needs you to pay attention in her class. And if you do, it's easy to get an A
She has a VERY loud voice. Once she REFUSED to answer a question after a test, i have never in all my life had that happen. Works slowly on the concepts and skims over actual problems. Good teacher if your a slow learner.
Okay....okay....okay....okay....she is very confusing, her exams are very hard and her grading on the exams are even harder, she marks the exams like she want you to fail!!! If your taking her class you gotta be great in chem, also she made me hate chem for the rest of my life!!!
She is awesome. She makes you love chem..if you do the work. She's hard, but super nice and helpful.
Awesome teacher!!! I don't know why people give her such bad comments.. she is loud but that actually helps in keeping you awake!!! She's not that difficult.. she doesn't trick you at all on the tests.. what she teaches you in class is exactly what you're tested on! all you have to do is study!
Probably the best organic prof in Langara. Very straightforward on what she expects.
Maybe her whiteboard software is a new tool. Lectures are frustrating b/c it's hard to find what she's referring to onscreen. Notes are MESSY and there's often not enough room to write into her courseware. She yells a lot. Was looking forward to orgo; disappointed.
Great teacher & passionate about what she teaches for O-chem. exams-HARD(especially the first one).requires a lot of practicing of questions (YOU SHOULD GO THROUGH ALL THE QUESTIONS THE COURSEWARE recommends). What works for me is I make up a list of Qs about what i'm unsure about and i go to her for clarification.(usually right before a midterm)
Organic chem is difficult no matter what. Shirley tries her best to explain difficult concepts and pushes you along the way! Best organic teacher and super helpful as long as you do your part and study!
Organic Chemistry is hard no matter what. Shirley simplifies difficult concepts and is very helpful during class and during office hours. Labs were stressful and she would always be available to help out when students could not count on Angie to be helpful. I recommend her for any chemistry course, she is very passionate and it shows in her teaching
Very nice teacher overall. She will explain every questions you have. She goes through lots of concepts for the material, which means you will should be able to understand everything she taught. However, she does not provide lots of sample questions in class, that means you cannot expect to get a high mark if you don't do homework...
failed her class :'( u have to put a lot of time and effort into this class and the thousands of practice questions she gives u so u can pass! & definitely a hard marker..dont even know how i would get 0.3/4 on questions... she IS very engaged but still definitely try taking some1 else if u can :( if ur stuck with her then dont slack!!!
At first I was skeptical about her from seeing the other ratings, but after taking chem with her, I have no regrets! Her explanations are very clear, thorough and interesting! Her tests are fair and if you found it hard then you didn't put in the work (this goes for any class). I rarely had a hard time paying attention! Thank you Shirley :)
Definitely the best chem prof I've ever had, maybe the best teacher I've ever had. If you are willing to put in the work (as in doing every problem you can get your hands on), she will do her best to make sure you're on top of things. Don't go in expecting a walk in the park (no organic chemistry is easy), but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TEACHER.
i went to ask for help from her frequently and she sounds very annoyed when i come..i understand that can be annoying but i mean you're my prof. that's your job to help me. she'd sigh when i ask her another question..
actually when I in her class, I didn't do any extra practice other than her notes neither went to her office hour, and I got a B+, well.. not too bad. just need to review her notes and sometimes read textbook when you are really confused, and you will get good mark.Final was hard, harder than midterm.
Shirley is AMAZING. She's really enthusiastic and a happy person, which is rare. She loves organic chemistry and it shows. Her notes are great and she's really helpful and understanding. I'd take her for 2416 in a heartbeat. Very fair on tests too.
Shirley is a great prof. You can tell she loves organic chemistry by how she presents her lectures. She's very clear and helpful. There are micro-assignments that aren't worth marks but she gives you feedback on them. There are 3 midterms and they are easy if you do all the practice problems in the textbook and read over lecture notes.
Everyone knows someone who told them how hard OChem was, while sadly shaking their head. It's not easy but definitely doable if you're willing to work, and Shirley is amazing at teaching it. You can tell that she goes above and beyond to help you learn, it's rare seeing a teacher who cares this much.
Excellent prof. Took her for O chem 2216, got an A (A+ without lab mark). She's an expert in the industry who is teaching out of passion. No better person to have as your O chem prof. Straight as an arrow when it comes to exams. Go to class, study off notes, and do practice questions. She's VERY willing to help. Best prof I've had (UBC or Langara)
Shirley is an amzing prof! Having taken this course before and barely understanding it I was pleastly suprised to leave this course with an actual good grasp of ochem! Shirley's lectures are awesome, she is passionate and friendly and I had no problem asking her questions. One of the best profs I have had to date!
I'm not going to lie, this course requires a lot of work. But Shirley is great at teaching it and office hours help a ton. If you took 2316 you'd know what I mean, and if you're coming from another school she's your best bet.
Shirley is awesome! Her lectures are super clear and sometimes she goes fast but if you go over your notes, extra problem set, and just ask her she is more than happy to help clear things up. I wish I could take all of my courses with her!
Explains well, decent test, helpfulness is okay
I falsely assumed chemistry was going to be an easy class, but it was actually quite hard. Shirley's enthusiasm for chemistry made it enjoyable though. She is really great about providing needed review classes, which I think saved me on the tests.
Very passionate. She loves teaching and org-chem. Lectures are generally clear and logical. Due to nature of org-chem, lots of details are required. She tries to make us remember them by repeating. Assignments are optional, and she gives good feedback if you hand in your assignments. Exams are hard, not tricky. Extra hours of studying is required.
Shirley is a fantastic prof who doesn't waste words, makes points very clear, and occasionally drops silly memory aids completely deadpan. Ochem has a bit of a bad reputation, but, I think in large part due to Shirley, it's one of my favourites.
Shirley is a fabulous professor. She is passionate about the subject, and makes O-chem approachable and understandable. I was also fearful of organic chemistry, but Shirley's notes & way of teaching allows you to learn in a clear and fun environment. Sometimes classes run overtime- which can be tricky if your next class is across campus.
Shirley is a very helpful teacher, an very good at explaining arrow pushing and the reactions involved. it is organic chemistry, so it's difficult. i honestly think her exams are much more difficult than what's in the notes. i studied like an animal and only got 72%. but if you can understand them on your own, you will do well.
As a visual/hands on learner, she's excellent as she leaves plenty of work for you to practice outside of class. However, I find she over-explains and repeats things before getting to the actual point.
Shirley's lectures are very elaborate and are helpful. It is rare to see a professor be so passionate in what they teach; she is DEFINITELY one of them. She even leaves students a few mnemonics that stick. Overall, HIGHLY recommend her!
I'm between B+ and A-. Shirley's notes are super organized. Very passionate about teaching and organic chemistry. She makes organic chemistry fun! Enjoyed her class. I even slightly considered changing my major from Biology to Chemistry. Would recommend her for sure! Can not go wrong with choosing Shirley for Organic Chemistry.
Fabulous teacher
There aren't many options when it comes to organic chemistry professors at Langara, so Shirley was unavoidable. I'm not sure how she is for CHEM 2316, but I had her for 2416 and her notes are very messy and she tends to rush over the material a lot (perhaps needing to get through too much material for the course).
I'm currently taking Bio-Organic Chemistry at UofT. Shirley's notes are super organized. She has a clear voice and explains the mechanisms really well. I highly recommend her! Just make sure you practice almost everyday. Even if it's just a single synthesis problem or learning one mechanism.
Organic Chemistry in general is really hard, but Shirley makes everything seem simpler. She explains everything really well and is really caring. Make sure you study A LOT and go to her office hours.
She is an amazing professor, and is absolutely amazing at explaining concepts. She is really passionate about Ochem and passes that passion onto students.
She's a pretty amazing professor. She understands the material really deeply and she can explain it well. She usually overly explain it, but that's ok for me
Best Chem prof ever! The course material can be challenging, but she makes ochem not bad. I loved her class! She is so passionate and good at explaining. She made me not hate ochem. Dont study last minute! This is not a course you can cram for the night before. I found that the students that often went to office hours did very well.
She is amazing! Such a caring prof. Highly recommend her! Go to office hours, put in the work and you can get an A. Super passionate about Organic Chemistry. Practice questions & study regularly. This is not a course that you can cram for!
Shirley is a very good lecturer and explains concepts well, you'll have no shortage of practice problems and if you ask for more she will oblige. Shirley legitimately cares about her students and their performance, but she doesn't sugar coat the fact that its O-chem, its a tough course. You HAVE to put in effort or you will not do well.
Shirley is the best! She is accessible outside class and goes above and beyond for her students. She created a safe/ encouraging environment for learning and never made me feel stupid for asking the same question twice at office hours. The course material was on the challenging side, but she made it so much better. Highly recommend her!
Shirley is an amazing professor. She actually cares for you and wants you to succeed in this course.
She is nice teacher and helping you in understand stuff but just keep on track with d2l stuff that she posted because some problems in notes have answers on d2l and she will skip it during class so keep your notes organized in better way help anyone can get better grades.....:)
She's an amazing instructor! Will definitely take her classes again in the future. :)
She's super nice and funny. She teaches with a lot enthusiasm which I think is hard to find in teachers when entering post-secondary. The course is very homework (recommended not checked) heavy, which is needed in order to understand the work. I love that she has classnotes to print/download which are organized for every chapter. Great prof
Shirley is a great instructor. Her class notes and videos were very easy to follow. She is very good at explaining the topics and seems to thoroughly enjoy teaching. Make sure to keep up with homework and videos and you will do fine on the exams.
Shirley is very passionate about organic chemistry. She delivers clear lectures, she's very organized, and extremely accessible outside of class. Take as detailed notes as possible and go over them right after class (or ASAP), do ~10 practice problems from Klein everyday, and go to her immediately if something isn't clicking, and you'll do great!
she's amazing, she knows everything and her lectures are really interesting
She makes chemistry very interesting. She discusses everything she would expect you to know in a test. Her exams are pretty straightforward, although you must make extra effort to study problem sets in d2l. Sometimes, she gives additional review sets in class before midterm/finals, which is excellent. Love her!
she is a really sweet, she will accomodate grading scheme to appreciate progress, do bonus micro assignments that are due on lab day, she posts lecture videos which is great. cookbook is highly suggested. and lastly, OChem is not that bad, you never know, you may start enjoying it. lab is easy for this course.
Shirley's teaching can feel messy at times, but her passion and good attitude shine through and make her class fairly decent. Her tests aren't overly difficult, but at times making sense of her lessons and notes can present a challenge. She is also a quite fair marker and her grading scheme is friendly.
Her tests are not so bad, however it is her teaching and content that is what you should worry about. Right off the bat, she will assign you a lot of work (like LOTS) -- so make sure to manage your time wisely if you have to take her. Her teaching is messy and hard to understand, so really dedicate yourself to her course if you have no choice.
I recommend no to take her. She never gives lecture notes in case you missed class because of whatsover reason. She uploaded another lecturer's videos to cope up with the important content she did not taught . Like why to take her if we are going to study another lecturer. Her marking do not depend on how much we know but only on right or wrong.
You will definitely regret taing her as professor.
She do not take care whether students are learning or not rather focus on completing curriculum from her side. She uploaded other lecturers video to cover the important parts she missed and were in finals and mid terms.
She expects you to be a bookworm while grading.
She never give students lecture content in case you missed the class because of whatsoever reason
She makes her lecture notes provided in class very messy.
Not recommended at all
More than half of the class failed her exams
She do not explain concepts clearly. You will have to depend on youtube or other sources to understand the content.
This course is more challenging than general CHEM, but Shirley makes it easier by providing lots of practice problems which are similar to the exam. She is patient and explains concepts clearly. Her lectures are fast, and cover lots of materials. The exam is not too difficult but time is the key. You should be fine if you can do the problem sets.
Most of the lecture period in her class is utilised in copying her notes to ours rather than understanding because she do not upload lecture notes at any cost
I disagree :)
Notes were a bit messy but very caring and tests and quizzes were basically what was in the lectures.
Shirley is awesome, and is thorough in her lectures. She sets aside extra time to help her students succeed and cares about everyone. Put in the time, and you will do well in her classes. Her lectures revolve around One Note slides she works on during class. She gave optional review-based assignments for bonus marks every midterm, which was great.
She is amazing .you might see her rating from some students and might think, oh she is a tough prof. But u would find her Amazing. I strongly recommend all to take her in any course u wanna enroll in No quizzes no tests, just midterms and finals and all the contents is from notes and the worksheets and she makes complicated things very simple
if u get a chance to take her in any of your course just go for it she's amazing. give you bonus marks as well and there is no quizz or anything . its just the midterms and the finals and evrything that u will see in the exams is from her slides and content she teaches you . i love her for this and her caring nature.
WORST !!!!!
Shirley is an amazing prof! Her lectures are very clear and informative and is more than happy to answer questions during office hours. Remember to write notes during class (she doesn't post hers) and to do all the problem sets on Brightspace to prepare for exams. She's very kind and has a passion for chem. I highly recommend choosing her!
Pros -Caring prof -Clearly shows/explain steps for example questions -Questions in lecture notes similar to the midterm question -Bonus marks from review units offer ~+2.3% per test Cons -VERY messy notes Tips for Students -Do Practice Problems(if you can do some of the questions you'll honestly be fine) -Make a summary sheet
Made an account just to drop a good review here. Shirley is the single best prof I've had in my post-secondary career. She's infectiously passionate about organic chem, and you actually learn in her lectures from the combination of her teaching and her note packages. If you have the opportunity to have Shirley as your ochem prof, take it!
Very good teacher, You can tell she has a passion for chemistry. Grades were fair and I wish she could teach 1220
Shirley was an amazing teacher and she would always answer my questions clearly during office hours. For those who are struggling, I recommend doing all the practice questions and ask her for clarification if you don't understand. Write down all the details she adds to her notes and print a physical copy (with some scrap paper, you'll need it).
Shirley is okay, I guess? But almost all of us were more confused with the topic after she discussed them. No quizzes, so you need to do good in the midterms to get good grades. She is all over the place honestly.
Her lectures were a bit all over the place - jumping from unit to unit a lot. She was very nice though.
Chem 1120 with Shirley was really good! I really hate chemistry but her passion for chemistry makes her lectures are pretty engaging and relevant. She does teach the whole class duration and can go over many things for one class so I do recommend to not skip class a lot! She's really funny too, mentioned Shrek during lectures like 3 times.
Posts a ton of material online, super nice and respectable teacher. Lectures are well paced and she goes over details well. Pay attention in lectures or else you'll fall behind. Tests are graded fairly and always available outside of class and gives really good feedback. PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS. DO NOT SKIP LECTURES.
Shirley is a great professor who cares about her students. She is always there to answer any questions inside or outside of classes. Lectures are suggested as some notes are not available online. Overall easy exams with bonus given with extra work every time and no quizzes or mandatory homework.
Lazy af. Simply reads through notes. I basically self-taught the entire course. And she never posts notes online, so I had to ask my classmates for notes when I was sick. Bizzare grading scheme: only exams and labs were counted. Marks were taken off for even the tiniest stuff such as those goddam sig figs! Avoid if you wanna keep your sanity!!
Such an amazing prof! She does very well teaching in lecture and offers lots of extra help outside class. Puts up lots of practice material which is super helpful for actual exams. Easily one of the best professors I've ever had!
Don't take this professor!!! She doesn't explain well. Your gpa will be affected. Surviving her class is difficult.
DO NOT TAKE CHEM 2316 WITH THIS PROF!!!! This class will absolutely destroy you as she doesn't explain that well. You literally go home and self-teach every single time. Although, there are lecture vids that can be watched but that still doesn't help. Explanation in videos are also vague. Your GPA will get tanked if you take 2316 with her.
Take this course with a different professor. You'll just waste ur time and money if you take this course with her.
Honestly, this course made me do most of the studying despite going to class and learning. Watching the pre-recorded lecture videos that were posted for review as well as doing the practice problems. Doing all those things made me survive her class. She is picky in some cases when marking so be aware of that.
