(Inorganic) -His lectures are okay... dont just copy down what hes written, take good notes even if you have no clue what he is talking about... exam was right off the lec, so memorize lec, and you will do good on the test. (oh he says you dont need to buy a book, i guess i can agree, an old version is good too)
He is a great professor. You can tell that he loves chemistry. He has a good sense of humor and his jokes are hilarious. Of course, in order to be successful in the class, you need to take good notes and understand the concept. If you don’t understand something, ask questions and he will help you.
I love this guy. I've learned so much from him in our time together. He has always had time for my questions and made sure I fully understand what he is saying. Never got enough. [email protected]
This class really was not hard at all. Some of his lectures were fuzzy sometimes, but the material itself was NOT difficult. Anything I didnt understand, I found in large quantity on the internet. Also, he'll basically tell you every question on every exam. There are not many surprises. So overall, an easy class. Definitely take this professor.
Extremely Knowlegeable Professor - if he chills out a bit, he'll last anoter 30 years at UH!
Didn't like this class at all. His method for grading tests made it hard to do well, unless you are the smartest person in the class, which I wasn't. Tests are HARD, but if you memorize them before the final, you'll do OK. Consider yourself warned, if you don't already get chemistry, don't take it with him.
He is nice and wants you to do well. However, I recommend that you don't take this class if you didn't take AP Chem, because it goes really fast and the students had to learn the material themselves! For the final, memorize the previous exams because the questions were extremely similar (but I don't know how it will be next year). :)
Professor is very good at what he does and is very clear in his teaching methods he is also very helpful. That being said, the (standardized) chem dept here seems to be in a terrible need of revision as the tests are ridiculous and unpredictable; often having very different material than we spend time practicing through quizzes and practice tests.
Laid back teacher for sure! Any questions you give to him will likely be emailed to Prof. Bott. His hour long lectures reduced to half an hour on avg. as the semester progressed. I stop going to his class and learned everything from textbook. Nice (and humorous) guy but he's only teaching for Prof. Bott...
He is carless and very unhelpfull. His classes r 20 mins long and does not explain anything. He has the book pasted on slides and SHOW em to students. Does not give curve
stop!dont attempt to register 4 this class cos he dosn't teach. It's better u stay home n study yourself.Terrible, i regret i took this class.
Do not take him he is very careless and teaches out of the book he just states the examples of the textbook but does not explain how to do it , nor the concepts. The class is an hour long but he cuts it to 30min long. Which is not good b/c in reality you cannot teach chem 2 in 30min.
Great professor, teaches you how college truly functions. He does not put up with any crap. He will absolutely not help you out with anything unless you attempt it first. He is tough as nails, but great nonetheless. I would definitely take his class again.
Great professor, teaches you how college truly functions. He does not put up with any crap. He will absolutely not help you out with anything unless you attempt it at first. He is tough as nails, but great nonetheless. I would definitely take his class again.
I love Shiv! Everyone complains about his class being so hard, but what do you expect, it's an honors class. He expects you to study and REALLY be familiar with the material for the exams. I would not recommend taking this class if you didn't take AP chem in high school. He moves too quickly for someone with no background in chemistry.
Took the honors course. Really hard & I even got a 4 on the AP Chem test. Moves extremely fast. Completely robotic style of teaching; write examples, leave class. No explanation whatsoever. I shouldn't have to spend xtra time in office hours for something he should've already explained. His explanations? C=C because C=C.
Is helpful if you go see him in office hours if you have previously worked the problems. Test questions really aren't that bad, however each test covers a huge amount of material that he barely touches in class. If he tells you to study something it is most likely on the test. However, he likes to put random questions you will have never seen.
Prof. Shiv is fantastic! Very tough, but it is an honors class. Very helpful in office hours. Do problems from the book and those given in class and you will do well.
Course definitely merits the "honors" distinction. Requires a lot of studying even with AP Chem background. Memorize notes for tests, also do as many book problems as possible. HW (easy) due every class. Shiv's dry humor may make him seem standoffish but he's quite approachable if you need help.
Prof. Shiv rocks!! I learned so much chemistry this semester. Yes, the class is difficult but it is Honors. Study, do loads of problems, and attend class and you will do fine.
Overall not a bad prof, his drawing leaves much to be desired as well as handwriting. Grading scale is not bad, he only had us meet mon wed every week and skipped all friday lectures. if you do not have excellent notes and a good ability to understand from book you will do poor. so he normailizes grades to have people pass.
Just practice the problems in your notes and from your textbook and you'll do fine. He usually takes those problems and compile them to make his tests. I learned a lot of chemistry this semester. Easy to approach. His writing is a bit ratchet. You can't wear hats (he'll tell you why by the end of semester). Overall, a very cool teacher.
take really good notes in class. he works the problems and explains the concepts that will be on the test. wantsexpects class to participate during lecture. lectured maybe 45 min but will answer questions. has horrible handwriting, so ask if your not sure. if you review your notes often and read you'll do fine. weekly hw is required.
This professor was very cool. In his lecture he explain everything pretty well, and if your confused about something just ask him in class. He finishes lecture pretty early compared to the scheduled slot times. The test were how standard Chem test are suppose to be. Gives 2 extra points to average on random days so just come everyday.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. He teaches out of the book without giving no insight. He DOES NOT LIKE interacting with students, he has no clue about communicating passion, although he does like looking tough.
Halasyamani teaches as if he knows what he is talking about. Go ahead and ask him a question, though! He freezes the moment you ask him a question. Such an arrogant person. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
I got a B in both preap chem and AP chem in high school and got an A in this class. His tests are all work out with very little partial credit. But they are not difficult if you do tons of practice problems (especially if chem isn't your strongest subject). If the test average is below 80 ish he will curve them. Also HIS KIDS ARE ADORABLE
His lectures are unclear and confusing and we usually ended 40mins early or the lecture would be cancelled. Ask a question in class and he freezes up and doesn't answer. Arrogant. He started talking about integrals in class and everyone was confused. The only prerequisite is precalc and he knows this. Doesnt honor academic accommodations
He teaches through working out a ton of problems from a textbook while explaining the concept throughout. Since he writes on the board, he mostly covered the math in class and gave a general idea for concepts. I'd recommend reading the book for concept and pay attention in class for the math since the textbook doesn't help with that.
Cares more about his research than the class.... no other explanation as to why he is so bad. If I wanted to see problems worked out, I could have looked in the book. His one job was to teach us concepts, which he did not. Save yourself and take Bott.
He doesn't teach the concepts. Only provides examples which will most likely help you on only a few problems on the test. You have to read on your own. Just take bott bc he writes the tests most of the time. Tests are very tough.
Teaches you by working problems on the board, sometimes it can get confusing... READ THE CHAPTER BEFORE CLASS. He doesn't focus on the concept portion of chemistry nearly as much as the math. He will help you if you talk to him after class if you are confused on a topic. Every test I took I wasn't prepared for because I lacked in the concept area.
Works out a lot of problems on the board, he doesn't really teach the concepts, but thats because your expected to read from the textbook. Unfortunately, no extra credit offered. However he's really helpful when you need help in class, and is willing to work the same problem multiple times till everyone understands it. Nice guy
Probably your best choice for chem 2.
Dr. Shiv does not care about teaching his classes, but only his research. He is discouraging and does not care about students because he will still be paid anyways. I do not recommend him at all if you want to actually learn in class.
Shiv is extremely knowledgeable and does his best to prepare us for the test. The reason why people hate his class so much is that they either don't attend class or don't read the book (or they don't do either one). Coming from someone who almost failed high school chemistry, this is probably the easiest class I took this semester, just do the work
Really dull/boring teacher, I had other resources to study from, only attended the first day and I'm passing with an A! Honestly, takes 3 days to study before exam and all it is, is just practice practice practice! Exams are formatted like practice exams so PLEASE practice on HW, practice exams and DO all the practice HW. Guaranteed B if you do so.
Shiv is a funny guy and lectures well. He does a lot of problems in class and shows exactly the methods you'll need to solve homework and test problems. However, he doesn't teach everything in lecture and you'll need to read the book for exceptions or weird problems. Probably shouldn't let class out early as often as he does; there's more to teach!
The chemistry department is pretty terrible here at UH, it's unfortunate that Dr. Bott no longer teaches here. Dr. Halasyamani is not an exception, his lectures are extremely dull and not very useful. I skipped class after the first week and self-studied using online resources and managed to get an A- in the class.
Professor's lecture is very straightforward, focus more in examples than theory. His explanation is very fast so students have to be on alert all the time. He is also funny. The grading is same for chemistry class generally. Multiple choices and some fill in blank questions. Overall, I think he is the best chemistry professor I met.
Absolutely hated this professor. My favorite subject was chemistry before taking his class. I've emailed him for help a couple times and he blatantly said no. I would suggest people to not take him. I have to retake this class now.
Honestly, you have to rely on self-teaching for this class. Professor Halasyamani was not accessible outside of class and didn't really care much. His lectures were okay, but did not really help much to understand the concepts. My advice is to read the book, watch Dr. Bott's videos, pracitce the HW, and do the practice tests in preparation.
Dr. Halasyamani is not accessible outside of class - he won't even tell you where his office is. Works lots of examples during lectures and explains concepts well. He goes teaches fast but easy to follow. Usually, reviews before exams.
I only went to class about three times and then I stopped because it was useless. I was on my own for this class. I took all four attempts on the homework, then printed them out before the test to work through them again. I found old exams on course hero and practiced on them. I would recommend other profs since this one gives no extra credit.
Chemistry is difficult but Prof. H talks about it in layman's terms. He breaks it down so it's not some abstract concept and makes it relatable. You need to do all attempts of the HW and practice HW. Also, go to tutoring in the Fleming building if you miss anything on the HW b/c it will most likely show up on the exam. It's a lot of work, but do it
Handwriting isn't the best but great guy and will gladly explain or rewrite something. Ask questions!!!
First of all, he's quick. His handwriting is just terrible and nobody can understand what he wrote. Ended up dropping the class eventually.
Did not go to class after the first day, only studied using the homework and the practice homework. Not a difficult class at all if you study. The only reason that someone does not get an A is if they don't put in any work. Try to get tests from previous years to study from.
Dr. Halasyamani is a decent chemistry professor. He works out many practice problems in class although his handwriting is not the best. He moves fast but will go back and explain things in detail if you ask. The class usually got let out about 30 minutes early. Make sure you practice a lot and take a workshop if you struggle with chemistry.
Funny guy and I liked him over the other professors especially over the 1331 ones. Does a lot of practice problems to prep you for tests, although some can be too basic. Practice tests for me reflect the actual tests 70% of the time so just keep reviewing and practicing fro those and homework. I STRONGLY SUGGEST WORKSHOP, HELPED PULL ME THROUGH.
This class is the usual chemistry test format bs. BUT! Shiv is so good at explaining the material than the other chem 2 professors (even though he focuses more on math than theory)! If you watch the bott videos and go to his lectures youre set
Note this is for the honors variant of Chem 1 also known as CHEM 1331H. He is tough. Get ready to study for his class. Frankly, with ample preparation this class is probably easier than normal CHEM 1331 as it is much more math oriented as compared to concepts. The tests will be hard (50% averages), but overall grades end up normally distributed.
Shiv focuses more on solving homework problems (which helps a lot for the test). However, chemistry is not something that you can expect to get an A on just from attending lecture. Most of these reviews are bad because they didn't get everything handed to them. Follow along with the textbook and max out all your hw attempts (blackboard) and ur fine
Shiv is probably the best CHEM professor I've taken at UH. His lectures help a lot since he focuses on doing practice problems. He is very accessible outside of class for any questions. He provides some extra credit opportunity which helps. He's pretty funny and cool. I would definitely recommend taking him. One of the best professors.
Shiv's an awesome professor. Probs the best professor for Chem ll in the UH department. Chemistry ll is very math-based so if you prefer someone who teaches the math portion and doesn't go on tangents all the time, take this Prof. He's funny in a dry sarcastic way. Goes back on slides and corrects his handwriting if nobody can read it. Cool dude.
Awesome professor, probably the best in the chem department. Also pretty funny and chill dude.
Halasyamani does a good job in helping with practice problems. But, you're not going to get a good conceptual understanding with his lectures alone, so crack open the textbook that you rented/bought/obtained and READ. If you are NOT reading you are going to have a BAD time. If you READ and max all the homework attempts, you will be fine.
Shiv is amazing himself, he teaches well, does practice problems in class and is funny in a dry way. The chem department however is designed to make you take the class twice if you're not spending 100% of your time on this class the first time. Regardless of who you take; no curve at all, you all take the same tests, 1 point of extra credit.
Contrary to what some other reviewers have said, you do not need to read the textbook to get an A--that is, as long as you have Bott's videos. What can I say about Shiv? Nothing--because I never went to a single class. Just watch Bott's videos (google UH CHEM 1332 Bott videos Reddit) and, trust me, you will be fine, because the tests don't change.
He is the best option for Chem 2. His lectures are very straightforward and easy to understand. Chem 2 is mostly math so he mainly works our problems from the textbook and focuses mostly on the important topics. The best ways to study for the exams would be to work out problems from the textbook, redo the homework, and work out old exams.
If you struggle with chemistry, go to his lectures because he explains things easily and is always up for answering questions. Personally I dont struggle with chem so I didnt go to class. I just read the textbook and did the practice hw/tests and got an A.
Professor Shiv is a very straightforward professor. He goes over a lot of problems in lectures, in order to prepare us more for the homework and exams. He also is a funny professor as well, who makes very subtle jokes occasionally. If you study old exams, and do all 4 attempts of your HW and practice HW, then you can get an A. Also, join a workshop
Make sure to READ THE SYLLABUS before classes start! He will deduct points on BB for asking certain questions, and block you from BB if you do poorly on 3 HW assignments. There is no extra credit, no curve, no individual help or assessment on how you are doing in the class, and tests are taken at CASA with a basic scientific calculator.
Took Shiv for honors chem 1331. NO PARTIAL CREDIT ON EXAMS. If you are a chemistry god, then have a shot at this class. If you're just okay at chemistry (me), this class is definitely not for you and will hurt your GPA.
Shiv's lectures are relatively clear and he goes over a lot of practice problems, but I would read the textbook to ensure you understand the content on a more conceptual level rather than just memorizing formulas. I would read ahead and bring questions to him or ACS. He provided a learning module during the pandemic which was very helpful.
I took honors chem, so maybe this is why. Homework was worth 5% and everything else was all-free-response exams. NO partial credit. At least his lectures were good.
WARNING! Avoid taking if you can. He is very monotone and lectures were a bore. Tests were difficult and no partial credit was given. Do not take this class if you are expecting to do well. The average across each exam was a 60. Terrible.
hands down the hardest and most arrogant professor I have ever come across. did not give online students the same opportunities as in-person students. 95% of the grade is exams + the final, 5% is homework. no partial credit on exams. is okay at lecturing but outside of that he isn't accessible. if you have the option DO NOT take him.
Probably the worst class to take in your first semester. 95% of the grade is exams, all of which are long calculation problems with no partial credit. Prof will not meet with you outside of class and had additional penalties for online students, even for things out of our control. Not worth the honors credit, just take regular.
95% of the class is graded through exams with no partial credit for wrong questions. He does not record lectures, so make sure you come to class. Answers emails, but no office hours (except with the TA). Test problems are similar to homework and lecture problems. If you didn't get a 4+ on the Chem AP, do not take Honors Chem with this professor.
Definitely the toughest class I've taken. He explained concepts super well and did lots of practice problems. Redo all HWs and lecture/textbook problems for test prep (download the free ebook since he doesn't require it). BEWARE premeds - know most people do take a gpa hit
The professor is okay at teaching but he is rude and doesn't care about his students. In class, he goes over many problems which help with the material that is on the HWs and midterms. Exams are usually similar to the HW so review those to do well. The only downside to him is that he is rude when answering questions in class and in emails.
This professor is very intelligent and knowledgeable. The material that he explains actually makes sense but he can be very rude sometimes. We have emailed him a couple times regarding questions on a syllabus and he was so rude and disrespectful that he told us to refer back to the syllabus or he will deduct points. Terrible attitude and bad vibe
Doesn't care about students. 95% of the grade is determined by exams, so he should've been A LOT more accessible. Instead, he was rude, not helpful, and made you feel dumb for asking questions. I'm sorry for those who have to take him because of honors, but everyone else should avoid him. Can't understand why he became a prof for the life of me
His lectures just doesnt help m e much so I was better off self learning the material, but that's just my personal opinion and experience.
I think Shiv is passionate and very knowledgeable, but oh my god his class is so hard. I genuinely think there is nothing I could have done to pass. It's hard to know what will be on the test because there is no lesson plan or textbook pages provided. ATTEND EVERY CLASS DON'T BE LATE. Don't bother buying txtbk- there are free ones online.
Chem 1 and 2 are hard af at UH no matter the professor. But you can easily pass if you sign up for chem SEP and PRACTICE like crazy. I take SEP and have never attend class once and I've gotten an A in both chem 1 and 2. If you want to get an A in chem, milk SEP and practice enough to fill up AT LEAST ONE college ruled, single subjected notebook.
He's cool, kinda sarcastic & comes off as mean. Do the homework and actually understand how to do each problem. The final is hard. I got 19/20 on the three midterms and I got a 26/34 on the final. I loved prof H; he's so funny. He doesn't teach untested concepts/theories and just teaches what will be tested. Take him but prepare to actually work!
Just to get this out of the way, the whole chemistry department has the same rubric and method of exams, which is beyond the professors' control. The exams on CASA do seem to rely on your luck based on whether you get an easier or harder exam. His lectures are really helpful in understanding the material as he does the problems along with you.
UH chem in general is hard because the grading depends very heavily on the exams that aren't very long, but professor H prepares you for them extremely well. Goes over only concepts that will show up on the exam and shows you how to do questions in every possible variation they might ask them. If you go to every class and review often, you're set.
I went into this class having not taken chem since 10th grade, and had to withdraw to avoid a major early GPA hit. Other reviews will give you an idea of what exams are like. Still, Dr. H is an excellent professor and only teaches what you need to know for exams. And man--when that 8:30 sun hits his chrome dome at just the right angle... no words.
An alright lecturer but a grueling class. Three tests plus final and ten homeworks. Lectures are less about learning chemistry material and mostly going over example problems. Tests are mostly over lecture material, but are difficult (~50 averages), extremely tight time-wise, very math heavy, with no partial or extra credit. Avoid at all costs.
I don't know why he's rated so low. The material in the class is very hard but if it were any other professor, it would be much harder. He does a lot of clear example problems during the lectures. Only downside is that he doesn't record his lectures, instead he sells optional notes for extra bank ig. The shadow government makes the tests btw.
Dr. H is an engaging professor during lecture, but he is sarcastic and strict. Out of all the chem 2 professors at UH, he is probably the best option. The class regardless of professor is 94% exams and 6% homework with maybe 2 points of extra credit which is based on how well you do on the homework. Take this class at community college instead.
Professor H was a decent professor and teaches the material mostly by showing examples. He doesn't upload his lecture notes, but he does have a book in the UH bookstore that has them. He tends to leave out some of the material during class, so it may get confusing when you start your homework. If you can just take the Chem SEP, it helps a lot.
His class was a bit difficult towards the end, but I honestly don't think he's a bad professor. He's undeniably lazy but with the amount of practice problems he does in class paired with textbook problems & hw problems, there are more than enough resources to study. Plus, he always responds to emails asking for help!
Strict but for good reason. class is deliberately hard because honors chem 2, ochem etc. will be much harder. Shiv cares if YOU care. He is funny, has engaging lectures, and is available for not-stupid questions. Read the textbook. Do the work. took the class optional (BME), cheme do NOT assume this fits with your major. This will humble you.
HBS majors, you need to study for this class. It is a very test heavy class, and all material is only taught in lectures. Lecture attendance is crucial if you want to pass this class. Dr. Shiv is a very good professor and is intimidating at first, but his lectures are straight forward. You need to put in a lot of self-time and effort for this class
literally switched my major from hbs to bio because of him... freshmen, dont waste your time with this class and just escape while you can. - former hbs major
Highly recommend this Chem II prof. Even though he does go a bit fast in class, his notes and lectures are great, and he's pretty cool. He actually does practice problems, which I've never heard of a chem prof at UH doing. 100% take this professor if you can.
Dr. Halasyamani was a great lecturer for Chem 2. I honestly don't see how you would do poorly as long as you go to lecture. Super informative and will always clarify any questions you have as long as you ask. Also made everything super simple to understand and didn't overcomplicate anything, which made me feel more prepared for exams.
He is a good professor, and he explain the topics very clearly for how complicated they were. I wish that the class wasn't so test heavy, but that's just how all chem classes are at UH. Please do not take this class if you little to no knowledge in chemistry, you will not be able to keep up because of how advanced and challenging the material is.
If you're not on antidepressants, get on the phone with a psychiatrist right now. It's your only hope. Stood on a rooftop once and debated whether or not I'd regret jumping more than taking his class. Save yourself before it's too late.
Great professor, dont be intimidated by him at first. As long as you are reworking your homework problems before the tests you should be fine
Unhelpful!
Professor himself is a great guy - willing to listen to your questions, but he asks that you don't waste his time with something you can find in the textbook. The material is very difficult, so expect to study a lot - wish I did that more early on. Tests are hard, but often take questions from homework or early exams, so review and you'll be fine!
