dr sue-chee is amazing!!
Prof was helpful and clear. Needed to use R for assignments, which was hard since it was my first time learning R.
worst lecture i took in UofT . Her lecture is like for herself. Never attractive.
She is an amazing prof
great prof, made jokes during lectures, and actually tried to learn our names! fair tests and assignments
Clear lectures, fair midterm and final, and quite generous with marks. A fair amount of questions on the midterm and final were pulled directly from the homework and the past testsexams. Both the midterm and final exam marks were curved up, and even gave bonus marks for attending and participating in a lecture.
After taking that midterm test, I don't recommend this prof for STA257/261. She also teaches STA261. PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COSTS. The questions were NOTHING COMPARABLE to the texbook/lecture slide problems/quiz problems. They were very tricky and difficult to solve. Also she put a lot of questions on few topics too... Another weeder prof for STA257..
worst prof i ever had extremely difficult midterm. this is like mat137/mat157 test on integrals with barely any emphasis on probability theory.
The lecture is not attractive. Tough on tests
Never choose this prof, never!
Online video lectures were useless and waste of time, and then in class lectures were a complete waste of time as well. Takes 45mins to go through a single simple problem (like how to calculate IQR). Weekly quizzes on material not covered, so expect to waste 30mins guessing. Tests not enough time given, 50mins for a 5-6page test. AVOID THIS CLASS.
Did fine in explaining the concepts in class, although still could have been clearer. Used a lot of the same questions from past tests, exams, and the homework on the tests and exam. Gave out plenty of bonus marks as well, which really raised the class average. Overall, the course was pretty easy (easiest upper level stats course in my opinion).
Reads off lecture slides and has no interest in students' concerns/questions.
Very bland. Class size got smaller and smaller every day.
never take her class if you take statistics serious. Meaningless lectures and stupid slides. Very bad tests that gives a totally disgusting marking scheme. Never trust her in this course or you will go die. Starts with over 500 person and ends in only about 10-50 in the lecture. I am serious.
Avoid at all cost! Worst Prof ever! Very unclear and does not understand nor care about student questions. You're on your own if you take this course with her...
Worst prof ever
Stupid slides, too much emphasis on technical problems. I.e. Stupid calculation and integration. Boring lectures, worst instructor i have ever had. AVOID AT ALL COST
She's not making us memorize formulas which is good. But she has trouble explaining topics and likes to complicate test questions.
nice prof in office hour. Should work on presenting ideas. easy exams
I learned more asking my friend than her entire lecture.
She cannot explain the concepts very well and just only takes such a long time to teach simple questions. But the test is tough. The worst prof I met in U of T. Waste my time to stay in her lecture.
Her lectures do not help with understanding the class very much as you are are expected to learn from online videos prior to the class. Her lectures are pretty slow as it takes almost an hour to get through 1 question. The class itself is pretty easy if you have taken a stats class prior but is difficult if you haven't.
She is awful and so not enthusiastic about her work. The first week, she was complaining that she would have to cross queens park so early in the morning to teach!!!She can't explain well and is very very monotonous. Seriously avoid her.
She is kind of nice but such a boring and monotonous prof! The entire course is designed poorly, you just do the online quizzes and in the lectures she covers only a few questions and barely does them in detail.
Horrible lecturer. Probably one of the most boring and unclear profs at UofT. STA220 had 1 midterm and the final. The midterm wasn't bad if you studied, but the exam was tough and composed of mostly conceptual questions instead of actual calculations.
Without a doubt the worst lecturer at St. George. The unenthusiastic nature of the lecture suck the life out of the room. Professor displays no level of understanding towards course material or caring towards students success. Course takers beware
She is a caring prof, she provides us with practice problems that tests our understanding which is very useful for evaluations. She tries her best to explain concepts. Overall, she's one of the best profs of the stats department here at St. George. She also tries to throw in some jokes here and there hehe. Overall, she's a thumbs up.
Shivon isn't bad. Her lectures are very dry but she does a great job at posting things online. Her 303 class was honestly really good for a stats course at UofT (goes to show you how trash the department is). I would take a course again with her. She's really approachable and nice & she tries to make the class more interactive.
Great Professor. Tests were reasonable and she was very open to questions. Best part is the well-organized slides, super helpful to study with.
Her lectures were clear and easy-to-understand. All the course materials were posted online on time.
I think she's a great lecturer, always prepare well for class and post slides on time. Reasonable marking scheme.
Shivon is very accessible for questions, like she will always stay back for questions after lectures and make sure everyone gets their turn.
First the prof gives poor lecture. She always Talked without any passion which made me feel sleep and it's like she didn't get enough sleep for every lecture. Also she is the only prof I know for sta220that didn't provide any past exams or any practice questions for our midterm. It feeled like she doesn't care about our grade. That's it.
One of the hardest tests in Statistics Department ever. Also, lot's of tough Assignments...
Extremely difficult term tests & time consuming assignments that require strong knowledge of R coding. She doesn't prepare you enough for her tests by not giving us enough appropriate practice problems and test questions end up totally different from past exams. Not gonna take her other level 300 STA courses, STA303 or 305.
I don't understand why there are so many negative comments. Compared to the other stat courses I took so far (specifically STA302), her slides are extremely clear and good choice of the textbook. And she even gives weekly summaries for marks which you would definitely get 100% for that part. And her test questions are pretty straightforward.
unorganized lectures... Have to switch back and forth between the lecture slide and R file for review... and slides nonsense... could not bring cheatsheet
Her course is hard!
She never change test questions, you will see exactly same midterm questions showing up on the final. I cant believe how Lazy and rediculous she is! Students will learn nothing but memorizing past tests solutions. I challenge her ability of being a teacher and teaching statistics. STA303 is an important course, plz stop wasting our time.
Although the class average is too low, she just curved a little! Her course is so hard!
for some unknown reason she just loves to introduce stuff like symbols and short hands. and she somehow assumes we can remember meanings of all thousand symbols she defined
She spends a lot of time saying irrelevant things during lecture.
AVOID HER IF YOU CAN! AVOID HER IF YOU CAN! Her slides uses inconsistent notations and she never introduces new ideas before using them. I can't imagine a university professor having slides that uses things never defined (it came later in the slides so it is very confusing). She always introduces new stuff with the word 'recall'. I am speechless...
Inconsistent notations, strange slides with proofs introduced before defining each term. Test about things rarely talked about and have assignment with incorrect assumptions.
For STA302, she clearly explains the harder concepts. She is also a firm believer of class participation which is useful , and an easy 5% to be earned. Her assignments and midterms are fair and can be done with medium effort. The TA team grades the assignments fairly, and the prof curves the midterm depending on the distribution of the marks.
Worst professor I have ever met. Tough grader. I took her sta220,sta255 and sta302 class, it's boring and awful!
I don't like this instructor at all, picky and mean to students, not caring, be late on her office hours, likes making lots of requests to students but not mentioning her own responsibilities when problems arise.
For some unknown reason, this person argues that our answer on the tests should use plain English that can be understood by people who never learned stats. Simply bs. I think this is the reason why she doesn't have any publication since she writes paper understandable by elementary school students. Making this even worse, she said that AFTER test.
This person does not know what she is teaching. She have messed up random variables with constants during lecture, made arguments that are easy to counter-proved, etc. If you would like to take this course, just self study by reading text book.
The concept of this course is easy, but an instructor who does not know the difference between estimate and estimator (and her note which reveals this fact) made the course extremely hard.
Bad on grading.
Really bad experience.
Curve just a little bit
She said multiple choices on final exam on Quercus. Bubble sheet on the table of the exam room. And then TA took the bubble sheet when the test begin and no multiple choices on the test paper at all.
I can't believe she made such difficulty out of material that should have been straightforward. Magical isn't it.
A professor who puts the most difficult question in the first half during a test and makes you have no time for the second half. I might improve my time management skill a lot at the end of the class. I might thank her in the future, but absolutely not now when I see my mark.
Terrible lecturer. Stupid test questions. Seems to not understand her own material.
IF YOU WANT A HIGH GRADE, DON'T CHOOSE HER COURSE. FAIRLY TOUGH GRADER DIFFICULT TEST , ESPECIALLY FOR THE FINAL
Missed her own office hours, numerous mistakes on quizzes, horrible and ambiguous quiz questions, difficult to decipher lectures.
Worst teacher I've ever seen at UofT. She made many mistakes on her quizzes, but not intend to correct it, but find an excuse for herself as it is human mistake. She also thinks everyone would know that is a type of error. But as students, how do we know her thoughts, whether she typed wrong or it is purely a wrong answer. WERID
5% quizzes are full of typos, poorly-phrased questions, missed her own office hours, misconfigured assignment deadlines
online quizzes were a disaster... she didn't let us go back to review our responses
Quizzes have vague wording. Some questions even assume definitions that directly contradict those in the textbook readings. The prof spends most of her lecture doing algebraic manipulation of formulas with no mention of context or underlying motivation. I guess it'd be good review if you already knew everything in the course beforehand.
Absolutely unenthusiastic, unengaged, uninspiring prof. During the lectures she does nothing but reads in robotic voice her slides without any explanation. Literally any youtube video on the subject would be more helpful. She is dismissive about any feedback. When a student wrote that the lectures are a bit vague, she referred them to a textbook.
Weekly quizzes are worth 5% each and also cover entirely different content from the lectures/readings
Her quiz questions are not able to understand even you work on all lecture materials. And I feel Shivon understand English differently. But anyway, don't take her STA302, it will crash you and make you feel painful. Especially her quiz, just doesn't make any sense and unclear.
Weekly quizzes are impossibly difficult. You are lucky if she responds to emails. She is difficult to understand and does not explain anything clearly. Also, very nit-picky about her marking scheme but also not very clear about it.
The material of the class is nothing objectively hard, but the marking scheme is needlessly punitive. Quizzes are often poorly worded, ambiguous and the point seems to be to trip students up with trick questions/fine details rather than evaluate their actual understanding of the content.
This course seemed well organized at first but the marking scheme is so ridiculous that it's hard to keep track of your marks. The quizzes often have mistakes in them so it's hard to actually see what you got wrong. Email/piazza response time is relatively slow compared to other classes and the textbook is available but not prof says not accurate
If the course material was not so plain- her cavalier attitude would ensure that we fail and don't learn anything. Quizzes are replete with mistakes, and to add to the agony, solutions are not shared, and even quiz questions are erased from the website so there is NO recourse to challenge the incorrect marking.
She's the reason I'm dropping my statistics minor. She has made me hate learning stats. This course isn't too difficult if you try, but she makes it so hard for students to want to try. Her lectures are monotoned, unpassionate, and talks in length about trivial common sense, but zooms past anything slightly complicated, especially formula proofs.
Every week, there is a marking mistake on the quizzes. The fact that we have to constantly stay on top of this is exhausting. Quizzes are marked automatically, then manually adjusted, but the funny thing is WE DON'T EVEN KNOW WHICH ONES WERE ADJUSTED. Piazza is just a mess, prof doesn't answer posts with massive threads of confusion and concern.
The worst instructor I have ever met. Constantly making errors in Quercus quizzes, and never improve or apologize for the quality of the quizzes. Refuse to communicate(or passive agressive tone)with students when students have disagreement with her way of organizing the course(muting all quizzes' answers to reuse them next semester etc)
Ridiculous marking scheme. Awful online quizzes and the sample test even go muted before the test???? The quizzes answers are not visible, lots of errors in the answers. It's the worst course I took in UofT, and the prof is the worst prof I met.
She isn't that bad. She provides clear annotated slides, and the expectations for her course were pretty clear. For the assignments, you will do well as long as you just follow the rubric. Her quizzes could sometimes be confusing and worded in away that could be interpreted differently, but overall I had a fairly pleasant experience.
The quizzes (40%) and the final (20%) had an unnecessarily punitive format where we can't go back to the previous question. Also, quiz questions/answers were hidden from us one week after making it harder to prepare for the final. Posts on the piazza forum got deleted if it was related to the quiz/final format.
A lot of students were unsatisfied by this course this semester, but I wouldn't say it was the worst. I think most of bad's are coming from the department instead of the professor. Good: neat slides, fair difficulty of assessment, willingness to communicate Bad: weird assessment system, inflexible grading, not the best lecturer
Good: Clear slides and clear expectations for the assignments Bad: Errors on basically every quiz, unresponsive to student feedback (deleted student complaints on Piazza), gave literally no practice problems so I never knew what/how to study for the quizzes, lectures were fairly useless (would only read off slides)
This prof is lazy, speaks in monotone voice where the class falls asleep, does not post annoated slides after class. Her tests and finals are very tough with 40-50 average with no curve and doesnt say anything on how to prepare for those. She also does not post solutions to any past finals. Unresponsive to questions on discussion board. Avoid her
not as bad as some of these other reviews lead on. She could have set up the course better and listened to students more. But she didn't do anything terrible and did seem passionate about the course. She was also very nice and helpful in office hours
She expects us to do many engagement activities without any reminder although she claimed to provide reminders in the syllabus. If you miss it, you wouldn't get the grade back and could not get any extension. Read off slides and sometimes did not know what is she saying. Expect students to self-learn.
No. Just no
This prof is lazy, she will take off marks if they think your regard request is not approved. The marking scheme is not clear and the piazza post will be deleted if they found out TA gives wrong instruction on the post after the marks of assignment are out, so make sure you take screenshot of TA's reply if you wants your mark back.
The worst of the worst course I have ever took in my entire UTSG life. 1. The lecture notes are terrible. I was told that she uses the same lecture notes as last year, where there were mistakes remain mistakes this year. 2. The lecture is also terrible. Whenever it comes to some hard to explain part, she starts mumble and quickly skip.
I (somehow) luckily did well in this course but her attitude was extremely unprofessional. Students asked for remarks and she replied 'this isn't a democracy'. Constant typos and vaguely worded quiz questions, inconsistently marked participation activities, and poorly made lectures with no chance to practice for the tests. Textbook was useless too.
Test is really difficult and important as well. STA304 is nolonger a easier stats course if with Prof Shivon
Terrible course, her grading is so inconsistent.
