She's so amazing omg. SO dedicated to her students. Webassign every week, 30 questions. Tests are department tests but she prepares you. Very knowledgeable. Has an accent but it's not too bad. She will help you anytime you ask. Very cute and jokes around in class at times. 10 minute breaks during 3 hour lecture. TAKE HER!
Liu is a terrific professor and an all around great person. She really cares about students. I had zero experience with excel before this class. She showed me step by step how to use it after class. But the exams were all statistics, no excel questions. Long homework but its good practice. Her tests are reasonable if you do the homework.
She's fairly clear when explaining topics, but she is new it seems, and makes a few mistakes here and there. She's very nice, very helpful, and understanding of any troubles you might have (school-wise and personal). I'd generally recommend her for introductory classes. She's very cute, too.
Cannot understand her accent at all
Professor Liu is very dedicated and loves what she does. She cares about with her students and replies my email fast. this course would not be the same without her . But the topic is boring, because it not integrated with calculus at all.
Professor Liu is the sweetest professor I've ever had. She cares about her students and wants to help them succeed. She always encourages students to ask her questions about homework and lectures, and is always willing to help outside of class (either over email or by extending her office hours to meet her student's needs).
An outstanding professor. Genuinely cares about students. She will go out of her way to help students catch-up on difficult topics. Very encouraging when a student is struggling. Highly recommended.
Amazing professor, takes genuine interest in students and works with the student to improve their grade!
MA914 the class itself is a joke. A 3 hrs pre calc class that the school makes you take if you didn't get a 4 or above on the APs. I know people who took calc 3 in HS that is in pre-calc. Professor Liu makes the class bearable and she really tries her hardest. She's super caring and tentative, she had so many office hours before exams. She's great.
Professor Liu just might be the best professor you have in your whole college career. She is so caring and understanding and she always makes herself available to her students. On exam days its like shes up late studying with you cause you can email her at 2am and shell still respond immediately. You wont regret taking her class.
You will not regret taking Liu's class and you will do well if you show an honest effort. She does cover a lot in class. However, if you actively participate, pay attention and take notes like you would for any other class... you will do well. She is very understanding, helpful, and always available either by email or her office hours/tutoring.
Cares about the students. Replies to emails within minutes. Provide clear explanations to questions and genuinely want everyone to do well on exams.
Professor Liu is the best professor! She is so good at explaining things and you can tell she really cares about Math. I truly enjoyed coming to class and learning new things with her clear examples!
She is a great professor who replies to your questions immediately and in details. She's very nice and cute! Would definitely want to take her classes again. :))
Professor Liu is a good professor and very helpful. Also questions on the test reflect the hw, half of the test questions are directly from the txtbk.
Professor Liu is extremely conscientious and caring. She will take her time to work with you and explain topics you have trouble understanding!
Great professor that is always accessible outside of class and via email. The course may get difficult but Professor Liu is always a great resource to brush up on concepts you don't understand. Be ready to take assignments and quizzes seriously.
Professor Liu is the best Statistics professor out there!!! Make sure to take her class ASAP!
She is super cute!!! I love all her outfits. She explains everything clearly and slowly, I feel comfortable bc i am not very good at math. But she gives a lot homework, the assessment is easy if you do the homeowkr.
Professor Liu is a caring and intelligent professor. She will always make herself available via email or in person to help with any concepts or materials. Be prepared to work for your grade and complete assignments on time.
Pretty difficult class for me. I had to pursue a lot of out of class tutoring and study groups in order to do alright on the homework. Quizzes and tests were very difficult for me but there are enough other assignments that you won't be doomed. A lot of variance in my class in the level of preparation, she did well given how different we all were
It was a challenging class, but if you just put in some effort to understand it goes smoothly. She does a good job of presenting the information clearly and in an organized manner and the homework assignments really help you to understand the material. She's also very good at helping if you go to her office hours or grab her after class. Good class
Kathy is a really great professor and a lovely person. I had to take statistics as a math credit and was worried since I am not a math person, but she works hard to make the subject accessible and provides excellent examples. She is also very available by email at all hours. I would highly recommend her class!
She is OK, I guess. This is a very hard course for me, even some of the classmates keep scoring 100 points in quiz and exams, I just can't. She tells us grade statistic all the time, which gets on my nerves.
Dr. Liu is an excellent professor. She really cares about her students and if you have any problems with the material she will do her absolute best to help you understand. I had to take a math credit to graduate; she went above and beyond to help me make sure I did well in the class, even though I'm usually awful at math. She's really a gem.
Kathy is really sweet and you can tell she really cares about her students. Before a quiz or exam, shell post a list of every type of question you need to know so no surprises. Super helpful!! Her problem sets are kinda long though.
Kathy is a very nice and helpful professor, although her online notes are a bit disorganized. The weekly homeworks in this class (like every LA class) are very long. Kathy's quizzes are difficult but her exams are fair. LA is a challenging class, but Kathy is a great choice to take it with because she is very smart, kind and helpful.
She's so sweet and honestly an amazing professor. Her class is a lot of work so be prepared to have a lot of homework. She's accessible out of class, and she adds personality to the actual course. It's 3 exams (curved), quizzes every week in recitation, and weekly homework. She makes learning math worthwhile if you can take her!
Shizhu is the nicest person I've ever met. She truly, deeply cares about her students, and she's very good at explaining things (lots of examples) and very organized. Make no mistake, this is a hard class, but if you go to class, pay attention, keep up with HW and ask Shizhu questions you will be fine. Very sweet professor!
Do not. DO NOT take her. She was by far the worst teacher I've ever had in my life. She does not care about your mental health at all. Be prepared to do 10 pages of WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT AND 3 WEBASSIGNS every single week.
She sucks, worst in my life. Wont get ur grade until a month passed after the complicated final.
Kathy is an amazing Professor!! I had her for Pre-Calc in the fall and calc in the spring. She is EXTREMELY sweet, she cares about her students, and she is always helpful. If you dont understand something, shell go back to explain slowly and carefully. Her slides are organized and very helpful. Her office hours are extremely helpful as well.
Professor Liu's Calc class was difficult, but very fair. The lecture notes were very helpful with lots of examples and she was very accessible in office hours and beyond. There is a lot of HW, but it's easy to keep up with if you go to class/pay attention. Exams are very fair. She made Calc enjoyable!
I was lucky enough to have Professor Liu for both Pre- Calculus and Calculus. It was honestly such a pleasure being a part of her class. She is such a kind and caring individual who makes an effort to ensure that her students are well, and understand the course material. She is ready to support you with whatever resources necessary!
Very kind and helpful. Very patient when I was struggling to understand some of the material and would walk through every step with me as many times and as slowly as I needed. Would also be willing to try multiple different ways of explaining the same thing in order to help me understand.
Professor Liu was honestly one of the strongest math professors I've ever had. She was incredibly well prepared for every class. In every instance of reaching out she instantly helped. I can't speak highly enough of her.
Lots of homework and we were given a comprehensive final at the end of an unprecedented & long semester. Other departments were much more accommodating.
Shizhu is an excellent professor! Her Linear Algebra is the best math course I have ever taken. The lectures are well structured. Homeworks and exams are fair as all contents are explained very clearly (and with many examples) during class. She is very nice and willing to help students.
One of the best professor at Courant! Love her classes so much. Super approachable and helpful. As long as going to lectures and doing homework, you will be in good shape.
The course is difficult, and there're tons of homework, assignments, and quizzes. She is very nice and explains the problems very thoroughly and patiently. She gives a lot of example problems in class so it is very helpful.
Nice teacher who will help you through calculus well. However, there is a lot of homework and the written homework is a pain to do.
There is quite a bit of homework and quizzes but in the end, she prepares you very well. Exams aren't overly difficult. Overall, she is a great person and will take the time to patiently and thoroughly explain topics.
Professor Liu is a really nice and caring teacher. As long as you attend her class you will understand and learn a lot. However, her rigorous attitude also means a lot of homework, quizzes, and makes it not an easy class.
Had her for calc 2, she teaches you everything you need to know. Really nice, and caring! Can't find anything to critique .
Genuinely the best math teacher ive ever had. She is so smart and so caring and has a great way of making the concepts clear. Shes easy to reach outside of class and so willing to help. Love her!
Classic math teacher. Hard, but caring. A little bit of leeway if you're late on homework (I'm talking a few hours, maybe) and have a good reason. Will set up 1-on-1 appointments with you if you want. Tests are standard math tests; hard, minimal curve, prep well or decently.
I went into calc thinking I would just absolutely fail every exam. However, professor Liu is one of the most amazing math professors I have ever had. Every concept is clearly explained and the expectations are always communicated clearly. Lots of homework, but its so helpful to learn concepts and prepare for the exams. TAKE THIS CLASS
Good prof - cares about students, tries to encourage class participation, etc. Had a bad encounter with her where I got falsely accused of cheating, which was a bit of a motivation killer. Looking past that, a solid choice.
Positives: Prof. Liu is very caring and wants you to do well. She is accessible outside of class via. email, office hours, and/or Campuswire. She puts a lot of emphasis on participation but it was only 5% of our final grade. She's also very organized. Negatives: Test heavy. There is a quiz every week with no exceptions. She also assigns tons of HW.
I took Prof. Liu for both Cal2 and Cal3 class. She indeed has comparatively heavy homework and weekly quizzes. And it's true that her midterm is harder than the other professors. However, she explained every chapter carefully and her section is always at the top of the whole Calculus chapter. She has large curved up with 45% A/A- .She deserved!
Professor Liu is AMAZING. Calc 3 is a hard class, but she explained everything super clear. She assigns lots of homework and weekly quizzes, but she really helps you learn. She is very accessible outside of classes and her office hours are extremely helpful. TKAE HER if you have the chance.
Calc 3 is a really hard class, but she makes everything a lot easier. She is really good at explaining the material and homework problems. If you can do her homework, you will get As in her class. Her homework is really hard but super good practice for her tests.
Professor Liu is AMAZING, if you have the chance to take her please do. Her lectures are fun and engaging and she grades on a curve.
If deciding whether or not to take Professor Liu's class, don't. Throughout the semester it was clear that a large majority of the class was struggling. She is horrible at explaining concepts and bad at answering questions. She expects students to just understand what she is saying. Nice person, but very poor professor. The TA was a better teacher.
Professor Shizhu is the only professor who actually replies my emails and answer my questions on WebAssign and campus wire fast; she answers me during weekends. I have been bad at math and her lecture can be fast, she assigns a lot of work. Her office hours were helpful and crowded; this is the first time I am getting A- in a math class.
Prof. Liu moves at a great pace during lectures and is always enthusiastic about the material. Also helpful on particularly difficult homework problems, walking the class through solutions on a number of occasions. She's very active on the class forum and answers student-posed questions quickly and thoroughly. Overall amazing experience.
I have taken both Professor Liu's Calculus II and Linear Algebra in the past. Professor Liu really gives out clear lectures in the class and is accessible outside of the class. Professor Liu also gives other supplemental materials helping students to understand the materials.
let's face it no math can be excelled without effort unless you learned before. I love the pace & structure of her LA. It keeps you going & progressing. Hw can be a bit painful, but once you get thru that, everything falls in place smoothly. The practices are a must to get the material. It's nice that she's there to help you reach those milestones.
Professor Liu is definitely one of my favorite professors in nyu. Her lecture is clear and she always makes sure that students understand the logic behind the math problems instead of just doing the calculation. She is kind and always ready to help students both during and after class.
Every week Prof Liu assigns a written homework, a quiz, a few webassigns, and a recitation note upload (take that as you will). In lecture, she goes into detail and is very clear and helpful- these are also recorded. I have taken her before over the summer & both times she has always made sure the students understood the material.
Liu is VERY difficult to understand, moves extremely quickly & lectures are huge. There is so much homework & the tests do not reflect the questions on hw. The content itself is not difficult, but she complicates it. Recitations count for participation & are not helpful either. Accessible for SPECIFIC questions, but not concept questions. AVOID!
I didn't take any class with prof Liu, but I was her grader for Cal 3 class in Spring 2021. She is very accessible outside the classroom, and I can always get her response regarding any grading problems within one day. I am honored to work with her together, and I would definitely work with her again if I have a chance.
The most inspiring and supported professor I have ever met. She'd offer support and help far beyond her course. She's a really nice and sweet professor both personally and academically. The lecture is very organized and clear. If you are feeling a little fall behind the course like me, she's always helpful. The best math learning experience at NYU.
Professor Liu gives a quiz every week except for the Exam week. Not so hard but takes some to review. Some homework questions were hard to work but she is willing to answer any of them in detail on Campuswire, during office hours, or in person. She curves the grade if the average is below 80. In my class, half of the students got an A- or above.
Although most of her classes are very big, Prof. Liu is incredibly caring and generous with her time. She is almost always accessible after class and wants to help you. Furthermore, I appreciated that her grading was very clear and fair grading. If you put in the work and ask her and the TAs for help, you should be fine and do well in her class.
Great teacher. The exams were reasonable.
I took her for precalculus my first semester. Something very important is that it is very hard to understand her. English was not her first language and at time I was more focused on what she was trying to say than the math. There is a lot of homework but that normal for math and there are 2 midterms and a final. You should do fine if u study.
I took MG-GY 6193 and her material is very clearly organized, provides a variety of learning resources, and she answers and responds in great detail. It is a class where you can really learn something
I love Professor Liu!! Have cal3 with her and feel really lucky, even though it starts at 8am. Her lectures are well-organized, and she answers questions from emails and Campuswire quickly. Btw her office hours really help a lot! Cal3 could be challenging, but she explains everything in detail and provide enough materials. Liu yyds
Makes problems intelligible during office hours/campuswire and provides well-structured lectures. Quizzes rarely do not include questions similar to those covered in the lecture. Tests aren't as easy due to the large number of topics covered but the questions are fairly similar to lecture and WebAssign homework so they're not hard.
Took Calc2 (Math-UA 122) with Professor Liu and took her again for Calc3 (Math-UA 123) because she's great! Lectures were very well structured. Weekly quizzes can be annoying, but overall provide you with an idea of the types of questions she will ask on exams. Exams were curved generously. Over 50% of my Calc2 and Calc3 classes got an A or A-.
I have no idea why she gets a high score here. She complicates all simple concepts and makes the final exam extremely difficult. She gave us some practice questions from the previous finals but the real one was much more challenging. Lots of the students didn't attend in-person or zoom classes. I don't understand why the median score is so high.
Made mistakes in many places which really confuses me when trying to understand the materials
Calculus III is not for everyone, but she is reasonable. Make sure to go to her office hours. The problems that bothered me get solved easily with the help from her or my friends there. I made many friends who are still doing study group. It doesn't make sense to rate her 1 or 2 here considering the amount of A and A- she gave out in the final.
She doesn't know much about math in general. She has very poor logic and always makes stupid mistakes. She doesn't have any intuition in math. However, she is very caring and accessible both inside and outside of class. She answers easy and silly questions very proactively, but doesn't dive deeper in more complicated topics. Not a tough grader.
I took the statistics course with the professor in my master program. On contrary to the reviews, she rarely made math mistakes in my class, and she can point out my mistakes after reviewing my homework for one second, and patiently explain to me why. Her class materials are the most useful in my program that I still use them to prepare interviews.
Best Professor for Calculus. GOOD curve at the end of the semester.
Professor Liu is very patient and she will go over every point in detail, listing out every mistakes that could easily be made. I didn't have high expectations for my final grade, since calculus is sh*tttttt! but A was really encouraging.Thank you Prof. Liu!
Very caring and accessible. Take her class if you want to get a high grade. Don't take her class if you really want to study mathematics.
An excellent lecturer/inspirational advisor/the most generous human being I've ever met at NYU. She has the rare ability to explain abstract concepts intuitively, and never hesitates to dig into proof with you after class. With her support, I GOT INTO MY DREAM GRAD PROGRAM. Professor Liu made my 4 years at NYU worthwhile. TAKE HER WITHOUT DOUBT.
I took Linear Alg with Prof. Liu in Spring20 when Covid hit (she was THE quickest to adjust to zoom which I appreciate a lot), and Calc3 in Fall20, so I've been in both her online and in-person class. Learned the materials regardless of mode. She is super caring and accessible. Not a tough grader but math isn't easy so your effort IS required.
Professor Liu teaches very clearly and gives many examples during the class. She starts with simple content and progresses step by step. I think as long as you complete her examples carefully in class you can build a good foundation in math and not spend a lot of energy reviewing before the exams.
Professor Liu, taught me Linear algebra and now she is also my math advisor. She is amazing professor who is extremely approachable in and out of class and very prompt at responding to emails. Her homeworks are a good revision of the content taught in class. Her exams are a reflection if the homework and quizzes and her grading criteria is clear.
Professor Liu is nice, friendly, and easily accessible outside the class. She is patient and always ready to help you with your questions. Best math prof I've met at NYU.
Professor Liu is definitely one of the best professors I met at NYU. She explained all the concepts clearly and gave examples and practice questions to help us understand. Her office hours were also extremely helpful and addressed any questions. She truly cares about her students. I highly recommend taking her classes.
excellent professor, very kind, but difficult course
Professor Liu consistently demonstrated her expertise in Math and her dedication to helping her students succeed. She was always approachable and willing to answer questions, and she took the time to ensure that each student understood the material before moving on to the next topic. Calc III is not easy, but Professor Liu made it easier!
Took several courses with professor Liu. Excellent professor, willing to help students. Exams are not difficult if taking lectures & doing homeworks.
love her... please take her class.. best prof ever
Professor Liu was organized. Pretty average at explaining things, but the organization helped me. I knew what I had to do each week. It was online. She's very hard to understand, but since this was calc1, I just followed the textbook the videos, and her notes.
She is very very very very kind. Class can sometimes be hard but she has everything organized perfectly. She wants you to do well.
Great professor! Very hands on though which can be intimidating but great for learning!
Take her! She will change your perspective on math. I used to hate math but now I am thinking of doing my MS in math. No offense but if you don't like her there is something wrong with you!! She is not hard to understand at all and very understanding. Her explanations are clear and will make you understand the topic to the core.
Very nice professor! I love her. Accessible and easygoing. Giving a lot of examples after giving new concepts. Midterm is harder than usual quiz and exercise. But she will curve.
The professor is helpful but she makes midterms and the content extremely difficult, hw questions are nothing like midterm, and midterm review is harder than what is taught in class. The only people succeeding are those who took AP Calc in HS and got a good grade. The class heavily builds off your prior knowledge and most of it is not pre-calc.
Had her Cal 3 before, very accessible in answering questions. Lecture slides were clear and with many examples.
Very accessible in answering questions. The lecture slides are very clear and the professor is very kind. If you attend the class, finish assignment, and review the content on time, you will get an easy A
Very kind and helpful, explains the concepts behind solutions quite well. If taking async online, make sure to watch/attend zoom discussions as she will explain things that the interactive modules don't cover. Exams are very difficult, but you will be fine if you pay attention to the lecture and homework problems. Exam grades are also curved.
Very kind and helpful. Especially caring for student. Her lecture is organized and uses ppt to clearly illustrate the concept. Super good. The midterm is not hard, and she will curve if the median is below 80. Recommend this professor. Best prof in NYU
A very caring person. Not the best at teaching math but better than almost all my math teachers! If you have the option to take a math class with her you should. Her midterms were very fair and understandable. She allows 2 drops for hws, worksheets, & quizzes. She also opens a zoom for each inperson lecture. Has a small accent but it's not bad
Professor Liu is great lecturer She is willing to work with you and help you. I consider her as one of the best professor in Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences
Professor Kathy Liu is kind and engaging, but the course can be challenging. Midterms are tougher than expected, so staying on top of the material with resources like Unstuck AI is key. Overall, a rewarding class if you're willing to put in the work.
BEST PROFESSOR EVER. i hated math before I took her class and i came out as a math major. she explains concepts so well and she ensures that students are prepared for the exams. tests, especially the final, are a little tricky but she makes sure to curve the class average to a b if median is below an 80. TAKE HER TAKE HER TAKE HER!!!!
