Very unclear professor, goes off topic a lot, tough grader. Do NOT take this professor for ANY class
New to course.
Awesome Professor. The only people who have a problem with her are the ones who refuse to believe what she says is true about the world. If you want blunt truth and actual knowledge, then take her. All reading was online so no textbook. Lectures are helpful. Easy if you go to class and she does H/W which are outlines of the reading/videos.
She's a great teacher that really makes you think about the issues that are current in our society. She's inspiring enough to make you question popular ideas and want to actively make a positive impact in this world. Take her if you actually like learning new things without much book work :)

This teacher gives a heavy workload. Assignments due every week and can be up to 40 questions! Impossible to due when you have 4 other classes and a part time job like most students do. Also 4 papers have been assigned. Is this an English class? This was definitely a dissappointment.
Do yourself a favor and dont take this class. Professor Abassi is unorganized and has a very confusing teaching style. For example, 1/3 of the midterm was thrown out because the whole class failed! This class could be very interesting, just with someone else instructing it.
This class was a huge waste of time. Abassi frequently goes off topic, and often goes entire classes talking about things that don't relate to Women's studies whatsoever. I had a moderate interest in women's studies when I started the class, but now I just cant wait for it to be over!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Her teaching style is beyond confusing and she is ridiculously unorganized. The workload will stress you out like none other. Do yourself a favor and remove this class from your wish list.
This was by far the worst class I have ever taken. She was disorganized, rude, and assigned hours of videos or reading. She does not reply to email, did not give guidelines for papers or homework, and are only tested on the homework assignments, not mandatory class lectures.
I do not know how anyone could give Professor Abassi a bad review! She is AMAZING! she will blow you mind about how you look at the treatment of women, society and media. She truly wants you to leave class with a completely different understanding of all these topics. She's super informative and wants you to do well, dont take her for granted!
This class blew my mind and opened my eyes in so many ways. The workload was pretty heavy and challenging at times as women's issues are a tough topic, but the assignments are interesting and her grading is fair. I can tell that she is passionate about her students' success and truly wants us to gain a deeper understanding. I recommend this class!
Idk why some of these reviews are so negative and harsh. I thought Abassi was a great teacher and her class was awesome! I feel like everybody would benefit from taking this class. Weekly homework, 3 journal entries and 2 tests but she is a very easy grader and she posts study guides. This class was very eye opening and riveting.
She is a really sweet lady and gracefully put up with alot of crap this semester from some arrogant people in our class! The class is not hard at all and you actually take valuable information away. Get ready to look at society in a whole new way! Great GE class
Professor Abassi is very knowledgeable and uses engaging multimedia to communicate information effectively. Very clear about assignments and will usually even remind the class of deadlines. Lots of class discussion about the readings which are always interesting. Will always call on students in lecture if somebody has a question. Highly reccomended
Professor Abassi really cares about her students and wants them to understand current issues. However, her lectures can be just her rambling a lot, and her pop quizzes and tests are extremely hard to understand from the way they're worded sometimes. Very understanding, just needs help with clarification.
She sometimes rambles in her lectures on irrelevant material, but overall I found the topic interesting and eyeopening. I really enjoyed the documentaries we watched. Go to class and do the weekly reading journals and you should get an A. She is kind of unorganized and writes the tests and quizzes confusingly, but she always fixes the mistakes.
You have to read a lot each week before the week starts and then she gives you a quiz on what you should have read for the week. She gives 1 midterm and 1 final and both are extremely easy. She gives a study guide a week before the test and the guide is exactly what is on the test. You can't take the study guide to the test though.
Boring/irrelevant lectures, easy exams, simple reading quiz and discussion post due every weekend on Blackboard. Attendance not mandatory. Seems like a lot of reading but you can skim it to answer the reading quiz questions.
She is a 10/10 professor. So full of knowledge and kindness. Her class is relevant, fascinating, and thought-provoking. Invested in her student's success - wants to make sure you understand the material &I does everything in her power to help you succeeed! Understanding, gracious, and just simply a sweet and inspirational lady! LOVE her! :)
There a lot of assignments with a bit of reading involved but she is an easy grader. So just do the work and don't sweat it. She is also understanding if you don't do an assignment and may give you a few points here and there, also there are extra credit opportunities. She's a good person and I'd recommend.
No textbooks but a good amount of reading from posted PDFs and articles online. Basically 2 assignments every week including a discussion board. The midterm is online but actually was hard, final is in person. Her PowerPoints aren't very well written but she helps with explanations.
Great lectures, but gets distracted by group assignments/presentations that waste time. Readings every week, with a corresponding hw assignment. Follow the study guide, but do the readings because knowing the study guide will only get you a C on the exam. Wish she lectured more and had less student presentations.
The absolute best. Her lectures are STELLAR. This is the most fascinating, relevant, and worthwhile class I've ever taken. She is amazingly kind and understanding, and just an all-around inspirational, knowledgeable, wonderful lady and professor! Do the readings (which are all super interesting), show up to class, participate, and you'll succeed:)

I took this class as a requirement for my Political Science degree. She is pretty open to other people's views, but there were times where I felt I had asked a question and got a diversion or was cut off before finishing my points. She seems very critical of individualism and backs it up with an odd assortment of loose arguments. Glad I took her.
Brilliant professor. Inspiring lectures. Phenomenal class. Loved every minute of Women Studies with her.
A really great and fun teacher. The readings and videos she select for her class are relevant or interesting (although some might seem a little out-dated). Fascinating class. Pay attention in class, and you'll do wonders on her tests. She's a very easy grader on homework assignments. This class was more fun than her 102 class.

Solid professor, some of the assigned readings can be dense but you'll learn a lot from her. Make sure you are active in class, however she doesn't require homework to be turned in until the day of the discussion regarding that topic occurs.

Chili pepper defintley deserved She's an awesome professor. Really enjoyed her class! Took it as an easy A elective, but got so much out of it. Seriously one of the best classes I've taken! Wish she could teach all my classes. Honestly! She's that great of a prof.
Just wrapped up the semester with her, and I have to say she is exceptional!!!!! I have never written a review on rate my professor before, but I felt compelled to for Professor Abassi because, well, she's just that dang great!
I'm currently doing my PhD at UCLA, and I still go back to my notes and her material for the class to write my dissertation. Shogofa Abassi is knowledgeable, dynamic, fun and brilliant. You'll discuss material that ranges from Plato to international business and discussions are thrilling, controversial and interesting. Take her!
She is a nice lady but very unorganized and hard to reach by email. I thought the class would be interesting but we ended up going on random tangent rants and then when it came to the study guides for midterm and final they were confusing. Quizzes require you to write more than just the simple answer.
she's a super kind professor who obviously knows her stuff, though she does get easily distracted and can go off on different tangents. the information was interesting and the "group project" was fun and allowed people to relate to the subject. her final/midterm is a lot of common sense and she gives a studyguide
Lots of homework. She was a bit disorganized but still not too bad. She has work due every week and sometimes the videos are like an hour or two long. It's an interesting class... it can just get a bit tiring.
As an accounting major, I thought this class had way too much work to fulfill a GE requirement. There were weekly papers due which she calls quizzes that consisted of 10 questions about the reading/video that was assigned. On Friday nights, two discussion boards were due that consisted of 300 words EACH. Also on top of that, replying to your peers
A LOT of work. Something due 3 days a week, every week. She is a great person, but this class had the opposite effect that it intended on me. Looks way too hard at the bad in every situation. Over generalizes everything looked at. Very pessimistic way of thinking. She does seem to care about her students, but tries to make you think like she does.
Just an all around amazing teacher. Reading isn't super important, but it could help on the test. Really though, its an easy class and we basically just talk about social justice for a full period.
As a political science major, this was great as it counts for both GE and major. While this class will teach you lots and will make you see the world in a different way, it does have a lot of work. Weekly "quizzes" responding to a video or article, weekly discussion boards and responses, and two tests. For tests: most material comes from quizzes.
There are interesting topics but it is hard to tell what is lecture and what is just random opinions. The lectures are not posted online. You cannot use your laptop in class. You can get called out too for using your phone. Weekly homework consisting of Discussion Board and Take home quizzes.
This is actually my third time having this professor and I love her! She's so passionate about what she teaches and cares very much for her students. In saying this, she also gives a lot of homework. There is assignments that consists of 1-2 hr long videos. Probably not your best bet for an easy GE.
wonderful class, weekly homework that she gives on a reading or a documentary + every Friday online discussion Q&A+ the 2 exams; be aware of the multiple choice questions they will be tough, but the essay ques is easy( if you read and watched the material ) Overall the class is great, it really changed many things in me. take it, won't regret !!!
She is an amazing professor! The homework is pretty straightforward and she will clarify anything that causes confusion. She's extremely reasonable and makes class participation less daunting. She does take attendance, but it is an easy course overall. I will definitely take more classes taught by her whenever possible.
I hated having her, she almost never taught us anything-which normally wouldn't be a problem until the exams where we hadn't learned any of the questions and no study guide. Online homework every week, not a big deal. She tries to have discussions with the class, but we don't know anything so we're basically guessing at what she wants to hear.
Nice professor but is really not there to help, outside of class. No study guide for exams so you could expect anything in them. Weekly hw due from book and movies/videos to watch. Lectures are inspirational where you are able to understand society in a different lens. She expects a lot from students so take a lot of notes!
Lectures are interesting and sometimes seem like rants. As long as you do the homework assignments properly, you'll be fine for the tests. She doesn't provide study guides but I didn't get anything lower than a 93 on the midterm/final. Weekly assignments and 2 reflection journals done at any point in the semester, so not too heavy of work.
Abassi's lectures are very informative and dense, so take good notes because they will help you on the tests. She covers very interesting and difficult topics. The class material is not difficult but it is time intensive. There are two assignments due every week that require 1+ hours of watching a video or reading.
This class wasn't really difficult. I failed all the tests and finals but I still ended up with a B because of the weekly hw. Wasn't the worst class I've taken, but you're basically on your own. Don't expect study guides. Just do the weekly hw and you should be fine. Some of the lectures were interesting, but not all. Will randomly take attendence.
I have had the pleasure of taking two of her classes, she is an amazing lecturer and is funny and personable. She assigns weekly homework that is not graded hard and then 2 exams.
I bought the book and it helped, but many other kids didn't and did just fine. The homework is from the reading, but the questions are common sense so the book isn't too necessary. There are no study guides for the midterm/final, and those test were hard. Everyone felt unprepared, but still passed becuz of the homework grades and 1 group project.
She's kind of rude and interrupts her students when they are talking. Then she puts them down when they have an idea and by doing that it's not very women supporting women is it.
This class was way too hard for what it was. The professor uses the worst interpretation of what you say and picks it apart saying youre wrong. The class feels defeated often. She gives really hard/time consuming hw assignments. Also, in zoom class u have to attend with ur camera on. No exceptions! Not an understanding professor at all.
Overall, if you want to have an A, then work on the homework and attend class (20%). Very much, you already know what grade you will have when you start the class by complete all the works and assignments. You can submit the assignments late and get the full pts as long as you submit it before the assignment get a grade (she is an easy grader btw).
She spent lots of time lecturing about things that were not covered by the textbook, and seemingly had no correlation to what we were reading about. Grade was pretty much determined by group projects and tests. Huge stickler about technology, wouldn't let people use their laptops even. The class was a bit all over the place.
I finished with an A- and was dropped to a c because of online attendance when I had a reasonable excuse due to covid for why I was going to miss or be late to the lectures. recycled material that doesn't have seemingly anything to do with the class 2x a week then takes points off w/o giving a valid reason. Dont even get me started on "lectures"
she is super passionate about what she teaches and open minded. you have to actually try with the homework she gives, because she grades based on how much effort she sees. always willing to explain if you don't understand something. only thing is if she calls you out and you don't know, she will get a little upset.
She's radical & not afraid to show it, which is admirable. Her perspectives aren't spoken about enough in our world. I think a lot of ppl felt like she was rude bcz she analyzes students' arguments. However, she is incredibly nice & smart. There's a lot to learn from her. Highly recommend going to office hours to chat. Will open your mind up.

One of things I didn't like about this professor was that she was very late on grading. Throughout the semester, the gradebook was never up to date. She was nice but very controversial.
She's a good teacher for WMNST 101 and 360. There are weekly discussions/assignments. Do them and you'll be fine. Attendance is required and is a part of your grade, so go to class. VERY easy GE class. PSA: *ANY CLASS* If you have trouble, reach out to your teacher, and if that doesn't work reach out to the dean/dept chair of your/their college.
easy class for credit, but choose another professor. she is super hard to understand because she never finishes a thought. she knows so much but doesn't know how to convey the information. also SUPER BORING and i was excited for this class. no tests/quizzes but multiple assignments every week that take at least an hour to complete.
The readings for this class were interesting, however, when it was time to go them in class, the professor would take bizarre conclusions from them. There were no tests, though the weekly assignment were time consuming. Her lectures are boring and all the place, she also repeated information many times. I
No tests, just weekly work that can sometimes get heavy. However its mainly graded on participation, so just complete the assignments and you will do well. Lectures were often unrelated to the weekly work, but I still found them interesting. Usually a large conversation about a topic rather than something strict. Can get boring at times.
No technology is allowed in class, but assignments submitted via Canvas. Professor Abassi gives a chance for everyone to speak, knows a lot about what she is talking about, and has really important, current, and interesting materials in our modules. As long as you show up for class and do the assignments, you will get an A. Never got a point off HW
I'm not a big fan of rating instructors but she is just the worst professor I've ever had. I just dropped her class. Weekly assignments that are so time-consuming. It requires you to read (more than 50pages) and watch 3 videos (total 3hours) per week. One recommendation: do not take her class.
No tests. I've had her multiple times and I'm always engaged by her discussions.Weekly writings on lengthy readings. HOWEVER, if you do it, you'll pretty much automatically get full points. You also really don't have to read the whole reading, I never have and I've always gotten full points. Attendance required. Averagely hard class, but rewarding.
Okay so the first few weeks are going to be hard- she's trying to scare you off. But AFTER like 2 weeks there's no tests, just a few papers, take some notes on readings, sign her sign in sheet (or have someone check you off the list... I stopped going and passed)... an interesting class- you have to really love the topics to enjoy it.
Lengthy assignments considering this is a GE that has nothing to do with alot of our majors and we are required to take. There are pretty time consuming assignments including over hour long videos and readings over 50 pages with a critical summary. Commonly doesn't really have any actual knowledge on the topic and just seems to know bare minimum.
Solid upper-division GE. Pretty lengthy weekly homework assignments but there are no quizzes, exams, papers, or midterm/final. Your entire grade depends on weekly homework assignments (analyzing a reading or documentary with questions), weekly handwritten journal entries, and attendance. Goes on long and very radical tangents during lectures.
Super nice lady, but sometimes the lectures get boring. Some topics can be interesting to learn about but sometimes she stretches the material too far. There are no tests or quizzes, but there are 2 assignments a week that can become time consuming. Articles we read are over 50 pages and the videos are over an hour. Attendance is part of the grade.
Easy GE class if you're willing to sit through boring lectures. Grade depends entirely on attendance, questions on weekly documentaries (you can skip through or read the transcript for answers), and weekly readings (usually about 10 pages). No exams or quizzes. You don't need the lectures to do the assignments, just come for attendance.
Abassi is a very nice lady. Her lectures are just based on the assignments we complete. Be ready to read since Friday assignments are lengthy. Most of the assignments consist of watching videos and responding to questions. You'll easily pass if you complete all your assignments. Be mindful that your attendance is also factored towards your grade.

Professor Abassi is an incredibly passionate educator who will open your eyes to various topics relating to women worldwide. This class will revolve around weekly discussions. Homework is mostly reading articles or watching documentaries and answering questions. Absences will affect grades. If you left this class unchanged, you missed the purpose.
She is absolutely amazing. I never write reviews on here but she is so passionate and cares so much about her students and truly making an impact. Attendance does matter but her class is so encapsulating that you actually want to go. Assignments and course load sometimes are lengthy and time consuming, but always very appropriately distributed.
Overall great professor. She is passionate about what she teaches and tries to engage her students in the topics. One assignment a week that can be a lengthy reading or video but nothing too crazy. Going to class does matter because she takes everyone's notes to count for attendance. No tests or exams at all. Would definitely take her again.
She is an awful professor, if you like boring lectures take her. It is a women studies class but I expected it to be about women history and how they overcame themselves. Instead, she dismisses men, says weird stuff about men and how they are the worst. Assignments were looong, 3h videos and 10 questions to answer to, and heavy readings. NO TESTS.
Get ready to read 15+ pages a week or watch 2 documentaries for homework. Show up to class because that's 25% of your grade. I thought she graded my papers tough and doesn't give any feedback.
Lectures encouraged us to think critically and develop our own perspectives by combining historical background, current challenges, and philosophical discussions. Regularly emphasized the contributions made by female scholars and philosophers, offering a variety of viewpoints that are sometimes ignored in conventional classes. Amazing class!
Super nice and caring professor. Most if not all of the work is just doing some online question assignments about articles or documentaries. Lectures seem to drag on sometimes but are still informational nonetheless. Very easy class to pass, and I enjoyed it :)
Genuinely hated it. Never wanted to go. No computers. End of the semester, assignments had nothing to do with women's studies. Which made me question the point of the class. I commute 50 mins to campus, just to watch a movie, when I could do it at home. I would not recommend if you get bored easily. Super easy class, just super boring.
The professor is terrible and does not actually teach anything about women's studies. Constantly interrupts students sharing opinions despite claiming to want to have class discussions, makes comments that are very iffy (I can't say what they really are or my rating will get removed). I regret taking the class and I had been looking forward to it.

Not a great class. The professor is nice, but does not allow for computers due to a number of very strange reasons (very outdated). You must go to every class or it will affect your grade. I never wanted to go to this class because taking notes by hand every class (which you must do) was so annoying. It was a very easy A though. No tests/quizzes.
I absolutely loved this class! Abassi is really understanding and wants her students to understand foundational concepts that impact us all. Some dislike her bc she doesn't allow laptops and requires in-class notes for attendance. If you actually listen to what she's saying instead of whining about a no laptop space, you could actually learn a lot.
One of the most hateful people I have met in my life. A trans-phobic nightmare. She will shoot you down in class for challenging her backwards ideas and talks over her students. No content warnings (got to watch a graphic c-section video for homework). Offers no sources for the biased and hate she spreads. Encouraged us to read RFK's stuff???
Worst teacher I've had at state. She spreads a lot of misinformation about trans people. Will share really upsetting content without warning. Offers no sources for anything she says. Will shoot down students for trying to engage in discussions and talks over her students. I didn't learn anything about women and waisted 1 hour and 50 minutes daily.
Professor Abassi is passionate and engaging, though the class can be a bit dry at times. Assignments are manageable, and Unstuck study was a lifesaver for study prep. Overall, a worthwhile experience.
Professor is very nice, class is just so dry and boring, but it is a free A. Attendance is also mandatory and only two missed classes are allowed. Overall the class was fine and you are going to get an A if you just show up and do your two weekly assignments, but it is very very boring and a lot of the material is such a reach.
Professor Abassi is genuinely one of the most intelligent people I've ever met. No exams, just graded on weekly readings and notes taken in class. Lectures can be slow but the information is good, she has a lot of interesting connections to make and you will learn a lot. Remember to do your own research and form your own opinion though.
