Pro. Hopkin is a great teacher! He taught my first religion class at BYU and I learned a lot and got a good grade! He has a major in Hebrew so he brings a lot of internal evidences of the book of mormon to you and its sweet!
Bro. Hopkins is the BOM!!!!!! He is the BEST professor ever. He brings the histories and scriptures back to life! His lectures are super funny and spiritual!
Great Professor, I think he will become well known soon (this is only his first semester teaching) Many will want him as a professor. I put a 5 on easiness simply because he is clear on what he expects and fair in grading. You do have to work, expect to spend anywhere from 2 to three hours outside of class doing reading and such. GREAT PROFESSOR!
Brother Hopkin is a first year teacher at BYU and is awesome. He fully supports his students and is very personal. Anytime I had a question or concern I could email him nearly anytime of day or night and he would promptly respond. He will be known around BYU soon as one of the best Religion teachers. You have to do work but grading is very accurate
He is my favorite teacher that i have ever had. I strongly recommend him. He is very approachable, and he is very open to answering questions. He lets you email him questions about gospel topics, and he answers them all very promptly. The class itself is not hard, unless you hate reading the scriptures. It you are ok with that, it'll be awesome
Bro. Hopkin was incredible! I loved his class! His tests were never tricky or misleading, and you can tell he loves his job, and love the BoM. Really interesting class! AND He is always willing to help his students! Once, my blackboard account wasn't working, and HE called the people to get it to work! He is really great!
Bro Hopkin's class was by far my favorite this semester. He really cares about the students, and will go out of his way to help us. He does his best to give helpful insights to the scriptures, teaches with the Spirit, and does a great job! Take a class from him if you have opportunity!
Bro Hopkin is amazing! This was my first religion class at BYU, but I really enjoyed it and felt that I learned a lot about the Book of Mormon. Tests are slightly harder than anticipated, but he is generous with the curve. Overall, it's not that hard to get an A if you just do the reading and remember to report on Blackboard!
I left a comment before taking the final. He is still an amazing teacher BUT the tests are pretty difficult. He is new to BYU so he is trying to figure out what is appropriate but his opinion is harder than what I think a religion class should be. Be cautious if he is new to teachingthat class cause it may be harder than necessary atfirst
Best religion class I have ever taken. Professor Hopkin actually knows what he is talking about. If you study the power-points a lot before the tests you will be fine.
Loves the scriptures, loves students. Have to pay close attention to the reading to do well. Credit for every reading and attendance. Tests come right from lecture. Figuring out how hard to make the class so curved midterm. Has more attitude that class is group adventure to study scriptures than actual class.Taking Isaiah from him in the summer.
Best professor I have had. Enthusiastic and very knowledgeable about the subject. Cares about students and is willing to help. He helped me feel more excited about it than I ever have been before. Class was challenging but fair. He's new so should only get better. A great balance of new insights and information with application. Great class!
He loves the scriptures a lot and is very passionate. Tests are super, super easy as long as you go over the powerpoints a lot. That is where majority of the test material comes from. Overall good class, I learned a ton.
Writings of Isaiah was an excellent class taught by an excellent, caring, very helpful teacher with contagious enthusiasm. For otherwise difficult tests he gives comprehensive study guides that, when studied thoroughly, help a lot and the majority of the class got As. Workload over summer was manageable, so F/W wouldn't be bad. I highly recommend.
This was his first time teaching this class. The midterm was relatively easy as long as you studied. He found it too easy, so he made the final harder. The final was insanely difficult and dropped me from an A to an A-. Hopefully his grading will get fairer and more reasonable as time goes on. He's a former seminary teacher, just so you know.
He is a wonderful teacher. He takes the time to learn each student's name and is good at inviting the spirit. His study guides have everything you need to know for the tests and yeah he is great. Not an easy A and there is daily reading, but still great.
I loved Brother Hopkin. He is very sincere and interesting. Very willing to help and answer questions. However-BE WARNED: tests are extremely difficult. Final is comprehensive. Requires 3 papers - 2 pretty easy opinion-type papers, 1 research paper. 1 reading quiz a week - attendance mandatory. WAY too hard for a religion class.
Brother Hopkin is an amazing professor. If you do the work he asks of you and study hard, it is an easy A in my opinion. I learned more in this class than in any other and it was very interesting.
Best religion professor I've had (and out of a fair few, too). There's definitely a little bit of work involved with papers and quizzes, and you do need to study some for his tests, but not a ridiculous amount. He has great insights and really cares about his students. His grade scale makes it possible to get an A.
Loved bro hopkin as a teacher. He really shows his personality in his teaching. His midterm and final were difficult indeed and made me get an a-, but I loved the class so much that it didn't even matter to me.
Brother Hopkin's BoM class was one of the best I've ever taken. I've never heard more prefect explanations of the gospel. Tests aren't extremely easy, but there are lots of gimme points and he is very merciful with the curve. His lectures were enlightening and uplifting. He loves his job and his students. I smell a future religion department star!
Very easy class. The test comes right from the study guide. There are three papers, but you grade them yourself so its easy to get good scores if you just put in the effort. Brother Hopkins is pretty funny and chill. It felt like seminary sometimes.
Brother Hopkin was a great teacher! He's funny and really good with names. I learned a lot. His tests were challenging but his study guides were super helpful. Taking his Writings of Isaiah class next semester! Great teacher!
Bro Hopkin is a great guy. Really funny and nice. He remembers everyones name in class and is really personable. Easy to work with if you need to. 3 papers that were all easy and a midterm and a final. The tests weren't super easy, but he gives you a study guid that helps you study well. Not hard if you study and read everyday to get an A!
Loved the teacher and the class. Learned tons of new insights every day. Somewhat challenging but teacher wants you to succeed. Recommend!
I had Brother Hopkin for New Testament. He's an excellent teacher and really knows his stuff. He mentioned that he might go to the Jerusalem Center in a few years, and when I told my mom she said that it's really prestigious to do that. He is smarter than he makes himself out to be, and almost like a dad in my occasionally lonely life.
Brilliant teacher - extremely knowledgeable, excellent at lectures. Tests are from the lectures - pretty easy if you're focused in class. The best religion course I've taken. Just switched my schedule to take Writings of Isaiah from him. Probably my favorite teacher at BYU - super funny too. Class is just the right amount of difficulty.
You definitely have to put work into this class, but getting an A is manageable. But more importantly, he's the best teacher I've ever had and you can feel the spirit SO strongly during his lectures. He WILL open your eyes to new insights, but he will never force his opinion on you.
Wonderful man who knows his stuff! He really loves his students, the scriptures, Christ, and teaching. Weekly multiple choice quizzes over the reading but he gives you hints and many are simple questions, plus a bonus. Very spiritual class with appropriate humor. Start the papers early, study the chapter titles he gives you. Highly recommend! :)
Bro Hopkin is awesome! His lectures are full of the spirit and he really knows the New Testament. His tests weren't easy, but make sure to do the readings to get 100s on the daily quizzes. He's a great teacher and cares a lot about his students. Take NT from Hopkin.
Brother Hopkin is amazing! This was my final religion class, so I've had a few REL professors thus far, and Bro. Hokpin has by far been my favorite! It's not hard to get an A, just show up, do the assignments, and complete the study guide and you should be just fine.
His lectures are great! There's always a strong spirit in the classroom and he's full of interesting insights. The study guides are very complete and will help you to succeed on his tests.
Honestly, this was my best religion class at BYU. Teacher is kind, knowledgeable, not dogmatic, funny... and hot. The lectures are full of new insights, humor, and the Spirit. I loved this class and teacher!!! Tests are challenging but using the study guide makes them very do-able.
I'll never read the Old Testament the same again! Great class!
Really enthusiastic about the course and he gives good lectures. He is very open to discussion and will work things out with you grade wise. He does give hard examples but otherwise is quite fair. MAKE SURE you are on time to class as you will quickly start losing points if you regularly come after the opening prayer. Good religion class.
I really enjoyed this class. The teaecher gives great insights but never forces his views on you. Super helpful. Tests are hard but it's not too difficult to get a good grade.
Brother Hopkin is possibly the perfect religion professor. He knows a lot and he's incredibly respectful and he cares about everyone. He wants everyone to have their own testimony and although his courses may be a little academic for some people's tastes, I think he teaches the subject in the most spiritual way possible. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Amazing man. Willing to take extra time just to talk and get to know you personally, and he's always willing to answer questions and help. If you can, take a class from Hopkin at BYU. He clearly outlines everything to study, and there's no surprises on the tests.
Ok Brother Hopkin is one of the best religion professors at BYU. This is the third class I''ve taken from him. He''s hilarious and really teaches you from both a spiritual and intellectual side. He includes a bunch of personal stories and insights from Hebrew and other languages because he''s brilliant. He remembers your name and is super personable.
I know Brother Hopkin from my home ward, and he has always been on my list of top 10 cool people, so I just had to take a class from him! He is a great guy and a great teacher. Really cares about students. Testimony-building. And hilarious! I learned a lot. Would definitely recommend.
Dr. Hopkin has found the perfect blend of spirituality and academics. He helps us (through class time and home work) learn about history, geography, and culture while also focusing on the spiritual application. I've taken Rel 304(Words of Isaiah) along with Book of Mormon(Rel 122) and they were both amazing classes.
Dr. Hopkin is a great teacher. He has a great balance between spiritual lifting and theology understanding. You will like his like is you are willing to read, participate, be spiritually lifted and learning interesting scriptural facts. I'm taking another class with him
This guy is hilarious! I wouldn't take a religion class from any other guy. His testimony is powerful and you can tell that what he teaches has real meaning to him. Some might be frustrated by his tests, but religion tests are always annoying. The important thing is that this guy can help fix a broken soul, or a weak testimony.
Best professor at BYU so far. Will take more of his religion classes in the future. Young and energetic. Knows a ton. He loves making connections to the temple which is super enlightening. Tests are straightforward because lectures are so clear. Take light notes, read over the power points, and review the study guide - you'll ace the testsclass.
Brother Hopkin is one of my favorite professors at BYU! I learned so much in my New Testament class and he is just an amazing guy. If you are willing to show up to class and do the reading, you should get an A in the class. Wonderful professor.
Brother Hopkin is great. His class is not difficult, some people complain about his quizzes but the lowest two are automatically dropped. The grade is mostly based on personal effort. I learned a lot from his teaching style, he cares about everyone in the class and stays after class to answer any questions. Best of all, he includes deep doctrine.
Professor Hopkin is one of the best professors on campus, period. He loves his students and he not only teaches us doctrine but how to apply it and become better people. I took his New Testament class in the Summer, it was a little harder because we covered more material, but I learned so much and I loved how he teaches. Highly recommend him!!
Absolutely loved the class and teacher! I will be purposefully seeking out other classes from him to see if I can fit them in my schedule!
He is the best religion professor. It's not even a competition. You are what the class is about. He is super inspirational and loves what he does. The tests are easy and he curves. Pop-quizes, so do the readings. But seriously, BEST GUY EVER and the class is pretty freaking clearly laid out.
Absolutely awesome professor who genuinely cares about his students. He is very fun, humorous, and most importantly, spiritual. I would recommend him to anyone, and will take any of his classes that I can.
Brother Hopkin loves to actually interact with the students and get to know them. Super helpful when you go to his office to talk. I highly recommend him, and I'l definitely going to take more of his classes.
Brother Hopkin himself is a great guy, he is very knowledgeable. Bad jokes about sacred things. Tests are VERY DIFFICULT-Can include things like "According to a comment made in class, or According to one of my million PowerPoint slides what is the most important part of the creation to me?" As well as random Hebrew, Latin, and Egyptian translations
This was probably my favorite religion class at BYU. The prof is amazing, he is good at balancing education and religion. My whole perspective on Isaiah changed thanks to him. Do the reading and the study guides and you will be just fine.
Very interesting teacher. He did NOT give clear instruction for his tests. Tests were extremely difficult and arbitrary. Did NOT test over important key information. I was very disappointed in this class as far as grading is concerned. I learned a lot--just not worth the stress. Sit in on the class, don't take from this professor.
Brother Hopkin is the most amazing religion teacher I've ever had. He is such a happy and fun guy. I learned so much about the Savior Jesus Christ in this class. Brother Hopkin brings a very strong spirit with him to class. His tests are hard and you have to work to understand the concepts, but I would take this class again from him in a heartbeat.
Pearl of Great Price was the best religion class I have ever taken at BYU. My testimony was deeply enriched. Brother Hopkin is very knowledgeable in a wide field of ancient scripture to restoration events. He cares about his students and works to learn their names creating a motivating environment to come to class, be honest, and do your best.
Prof Hopkin is an AMAZING man. He cares about his students and tries to memorize everyone's names, is open to helping students one on one, is very respectful, knowledgeable, and has a great love of Christ. I can't recommend him enough! Tests are somewhat challenging but if you study well you can definitely get an A. Take him!!! He da best!
Fantastic lecturer. I loved every class period. There were a couple papers but they're literally designed for you to get a 100%. I would highly recommend this class to everyone, you would not regret taking this class
Shon is the greatest guy ever! His tests aren't bad if you review the study guide and do the practice questions, and everything else in the class is designed to bring your grade up. He's hilarious (most of the time without trying). He blends devotional learning with educational learning very well. Take Shon! You won't regret it
Brother Hopkin is the man! I loved this class and looked forward to it each day. Tests are manageable, just make flashcards from the study guide and you will do great!
I love Brother Hopkin, I've taken two classes from him. He really made Isaiah easier to understand, which is exactly what I wanted. Beware of difficult tests. the study guides are helpful but they are huge exams for a 2 credit class. Super funny though and an awesome professor. However, it bugged me that he is literally always behind on material.
Brother Hopkin is the man if you want to learn to understand Isaiah. The textbook is mandatory but it's probably one of the best textbooks I've ever had. Very clear and helpful in understanding all the references Isaiah uses in his writing. I think this class is really spiritually uplifting and If I could go back I'd definitely choose it again.
Dr Hopkin gives a good balance of spiritual and intellectual material in his class. He will frequently allow space for class members to share personal feelings about what's discussed but you never feel like you're being graded on your testimony. He clearly loves what he does and prepares you well for the tests, although they are challenging.
Bro. Hopkin has been one of the best religion professors I've had. He has mastered the balance between spiritual and academic material, and he understands the content so well that you walk away with a lot of really good tools for digging into Isaiah.
Hopkin is great. There are weekly quizzes that come directly from the reading, two papers, one midterm, and one final. He is fair and clearly expresses what he expects from his students. He drops the lowest four quizzes and two attendance grades. He also gives you an opportunity to write a research paper to reduce the weight of the exams by 15%.
Awesome professor. He does a great job helping you to apply the gospel to your current life while also teaching you valuable historical context of the Old Testament. A lot of people seemed to think it was hard, but for me it was super easy simply because I stayed engaged in class and did the reading.
Bro. Hopkin is very knowledgeable and I learned a lot! He also is very clear what will be on the midterm and final, as long as you study from his study guides. You have to be at class and do the reading before class to get full participation points. There are daily quizzes on chapter titles but you can study for them with a document on LS :)
Great guy! However, I found the spring term to be very difficult. Prof. Hopkins has a lot of material to cover, and in the shorter schedule, it is hard to get through it all. The tests are very specific, and the study guide didn't help much. Study hard for the tests, they contain a lot of information.
This class was hands down my favorite class that I have taken at BYU, and I'm a senior. Professor Hopkin REALLY cares about his students and the material he teaches. Weekly reading quiz. Tests are hard and the final is killer but still a class so so so worth taking! Prof Hopkin teaches with facts and the spirit. Also accommodating as need basis.
Loved this class. Work load was appropriate for a 2-credit class. Professor Hopkin really balances academic and devotional learning. Lectures are interesting and he has a great sense of humor, which always helps over the course of the hour. Study guides help succeed on the tests. Short response papers that help process what is being learned.
Dr. Hopkin is currently teaching at the BYU Jerusalem Center. He is wonderful! He's funny, & makes a lot of little dad jokes. He is very knowledgeable, organized, & good at what he does. I loved going to his class. He's so kind-hearted & really cares about each student individually. Tests were very hard though. You have to study HARD to do well!
Hopkin is a great guy, but do NOT take him for REL A 275. I've heard that Teachings&Doctrines of the Book of Mormon is an extremely insightful and spiritual class, but not Hopkin's. This class is purely history, and he requires you memorize a LOT of historical facts for the huge exams. Do NOT take him for this class. Take a different professor!
Literally the worst tests. Memorize every chapter and a heading in the first half of the Book of Mormon. Way too much time for a 2 credit class. The information feels useless. The tests are filled with obscure questions that are only briefly covered if at all in class.
Dr. Hopkin is amazing and he knows SO much about Isaiah. I learned so much from him, and really enjoyed going to his classes. The class was pretty easy, you are graded on attendance, reading quizzes, response papers, and exams. The papers and quizzes are pretty easy, the tests are a bit harder, but if you do the study guide, you will do just fine!
great dude, but the lectures are purely discussion so it is hard to find out what he wants on the tests. do the study guide. we talked wayyyy too much about Isaiah. If you're looking for an introduction to the book of Mormon or just the storyline, take 121 and not 275. that being said, I always felt the spirit in this class.
Dr. Hopkin is amazing. His lectures were engaging and he is so funny. The class was not hard at all. 2 midterms, 1 final, and 4 papers, none of which are hard just use the study guides. You are graded on attendance and reading so you have to do that. I took this Winter 2020 so the last half was online which I was genuinely sad about.
I have never understood Isaiah until having taken this class. He is such an amazing teacher who understands the material better than anyone else and is easy to follow. He's hilarious, I would take him again in a heartbeat.
One of my favorite religious professors, but beware of tests. He's nice but his tests are intense (though nothing unfair since he's upfront about it.) Make sure to study hard and you'll be fine as long as you're also doing well consistently on everything else, which takes time but is otherwise simple. The class is both intellectual and spiritual.
Brother Hopkins gives interesting lectures, so the class is not boring. Assignments are pretty easy to get done and papers aren't too harshly graded. Tests are pretty difficult because they are often about small minor things you learned, but overall the class was pretty easy and Hopkins was easy to get in contact with if you ever needed help
If you want to gain a great understanding of the Pearl of Great Price, take this class from Brother Hopkin! Class really isnt that bad, but tests are closed book. But great class!
Very nice teacher but his class is too much work. I would recommend taking it from someone else unless you want to spend hours studying the topics.
Prof Shon is a really good guy. It is an easy A if you follow his study guides. His classes are fun but sometimes the readings are sort of too much. He cares about you and he makes dad's jokes. Take him if you want an easy A.
Professor Hopkin is the first religion professor at BYU whose lectures I've actually enjoyed. That being said, his tests are the worst most pedantic tests I have ever taken. So, great lecturer, HORRIBLE test giver.
I LOVED this class. Isaiah is a hard topic, but I felt like I learned not only interesting facts, but also how to understand Isaiah on my own. If you get a chance, definitely take Brother Hopkin
Hopkin clearly cares about his class and his students. He was very concise with teaching the material that he is definitely passionate about, and he always tried his best to foster discussions in his classroom, even between those with differing views.
Professor Hopkin is amazing, a was a freshman when I took that class, it was hard but he helped me a lot, he is amazing, the class and test are hard but you will definitely love it, now, if you are interested in this class, take it, if is only for the GE d not take it, is hard and it will be a punishment just because of your intention, up to you.
Professor Hopkin is amazing! Isaiah with him has been my all time favorite class at BYU. He is passionate about the subject and really cares about his students. His class with the perfect blend of academic and spiritual. This class wasn't that hard as long as you study well for the midterm and final. Would absolutely take another class from him!
I took his class online so I honestly didn't get much interaction but his grading is very clear and it is easy to get an A if you read the rubric. There are a lot of assignments and it is easy to get behind so keep on top of it even when if it's easy. The tests are not too bad and if you do well on the quizzes, you'll have not problem.
If you want to take a class that is a ton of busy work and extremely hard tests this is for you. If you are not a member I would try to avoid taking this class. He expects you to know things that members barely know themselves. Worst experience in a religion class for me so far.
I LOVED this class! I had it once a week, so we had a quiz every class, but as long as you did the readings you were fine. Other than quizzes, there were four small response papers and two exams throughout the semester. The exams were completely doable if you studied. I learned so much from this class and definitely recommend Brother Hopkin!
I took his Teachings & Doctrines of the BOM online and it was super chill. Grading was not strict as long as you completed every assignment and turned them in on time. Exams were not difficult either. Not much interaction with the professor himself unless you attend online seminars. He is very knowledgeable and uplifting so he isn't a bad choice.
Dr. Hopkin is so great! He teaches really well and has a great testimony. There are a few papers over the semester, and some weeks of reading a lot of chapters of Isaiah. Each class beings with a quiz on the reading. They're not too difficult if you do the reading close to the time of class and focus on what you read.
I can honestly say that this class was everything I can't stand about BYU religion courses. Tests are MC, proctored & closed note or scripture while asking extremely specific details that are hard to find even if you are looking right at your notes. Many questions felt very subjective. Grading isn't harsh for journals. But miserable experience.
I took his "writings of Isaiah" class and I seriously loved it so much. I have never fully read that book, and he was able to explain the chapters and verses clearly, explaining the historical factors that are relevant. He changed my perspective on Isaiah from feeling confused to it now being my new favorite book of scripture.
Prof Hopkin is a knowledgeable and engaging teacher, but this class can be quite challenging. The lectures are discussion-based, so keeping up with the readings and study guides is key. Unstuck Study AI was super helpful for me to reinforce the concepts. Overall, a rewarding class if you're willing to put in the work.
Dr Shon was amazing! One of the best classes I have taken!
I really enjoyed taking Isaiah from Brother Hopkin. He took the time to learn each person's name and was always kind and personable. His class was a good mix of historical, modern application, and spiritual. Weekly quizzes are easy if you do the reading! Would recommend.
Best religion class I have taken at BYU in my three years. Amazing person and very spiritual experience. You do need to study for the exams, but if you use the study guide and take some notes in class, you will do fine. There is a quiz every class, but if you do the readings and prep a bit you will do fine.
