Actually makes you care about what she teaches. I think she can teach a course about door knobs and make it interesting. Look her up and take as many courses as she is involved in. Which other labs provide cookies and tea? fruit? Overall probably

She was an excellent prof and lab director. Her tests were rather specific, requiring a few hours of memory work before an exam, but she presents it all before you. She's got an excellent website going with really helpful lab pictures for her 209 class.

Shona was my teacher for the "Plants and Peoples" course. She is excellent, every helpful, fun teacher and conscientious about students needs. Our whole entire class had a good time learning about how plants affect our society.

THE BEST PROFF I had in my 4 years of UBC. Her lectures and labs are really fun. A lot of work for her courses but I took all three of her classes,,,,it was THAT fun.

Shona is easily one of (if not the) best prof I've had at UBC. Great teacher, really helpful, and is an absolute sweetheart. There's alot of work in the course, but if you do it then you'll do fine. I think she really wants everyone to do well. Highly recommend anything she's teaching.

Shona's a sweetheart! Not only is she very helpful both in lecture and in lab, but actually makes you WANT to learn more about botany! Every science student has to have her at least once before they graduate - a highly recommended course!

You HAVE to meet her, even if you're not in Science - that's the measure of her GREATNESS! She even makes field trips for fun..and she loves her webct (chat rooms before the final lab exam and all!) very involved, caring, FUNNY! and she pampers us with food during labs =)SHONA RULZ!

Shona is truly a wonderful prof...she made me look at plants when I never did before. Her good spirit was reflected in her team of TA's. She took time and care with webct, and smiled in a totally unpretentious way even when you were dicking around. Nice lady, great teacher, you learned a lot without knowing it.

Shona's class is ENTIRELY about memorization, and you don't even learn any of the lab skills she's supposed to teach. She clearly has favourites and is much more helpful to people who suck up embarassingly.

Her lab is unbelievably boring, the only good thing about it is the cookies. Her lab instructor didn't know what he was doing most of the time and was unable to answer questions.

Shona is a very enthusiastic lab instructor, and goes to great trouble to maintain her WebCT site. She will even use student photos of particularly good slides and works hard to learn names and make the labs interesting. Shona is a wonderful woman, very approachable, friendly, and energetic. Oh, and she brings treats to labs.

Shona is a really nice lady who really cares about students. She was in charge of the lab for Biology 209 and she did a really good job. The exams for the lab are relatively tough, but I guess that is the nature of the course.

She was... intriguing. Very committed to the course, lab, updating WebCT, involving students in volunteer projects. Very grateful to her for that, but that being said the labs were torturous (maybe just because I hate labs), the exams very difficult, and she def. plays favourites. Still she makes an effort to know the students and that's admirable

Shona is passionate about teaching and always willing to help out her students. She mades the material easy to understand and helps students with memory tricks. She uses student's study questions for exams so we always know what to study. She listens to feedback and is my favourite prof at UBC!

Really interested in what she does, and awesome to listen to in Lecture. Tests are lengthy but lab tests are made easier by studying the pictures posted on Vista under the Labs section.

One of the best professors I've had in my 5 years of undergrad. Really makes you care about the material you're learning, even if you're not that interested in the course to begin with. I'd run through a brick wall for her if she asked me to.

Excellent prof. I had very little interest in the subject manner prior, but she kept the course very interesting. Apart from that, she's a great coordinator for the program. Handled my complicated transfer with a great deal of patience and professionalism.

Shona definitely one of the best profs I had! Her labs for this class was fairly simple and straightforward ( and lots of food)! She's very flexible, has a great sense of humour and her knowledge on plants just amazes you! One major projectreport and minor quizzesassignments here and there that are straightforward as well. Overall a great class!

She is a really good lecturer and she posted a lot of the materials she draws on the doc cam after class. She does go into a lot of details that she won't possibly ask from students (Everything needed is basically on the slides) but if you put in some work, it's not that hard. They allow a single note sheet for the exams which is REALLY helpful.

She is super unorganized and makes ridiculously hard quizzes and exams. She often tests on material you have not learned yet which is absolutely ridiculous. As a BIOL major this is one of the hardest upper BIOL courses I've taken (I've taken 310, 325, 361, 364, 331, 363, 336, 300). Ridiculous course for arts students too. AVOID. LABS BORINGG

Shona is funny and kind which is good. The difficulty of the course comes down to the amount of memorization & tests. There were 2 lecture midterms & a lecture final exam, & a lab midterm, & a lab final. That's 4 exams you have to study for. The exams are also not easy, with tricky multiple choice, short answer, and an essay with VERY limited time.

This course is actually very hard - what I mean by this is that the labs are hard with difficult drawings. However, the good thing is that exams are not worth very much. 20% lab exam, 15% final exam. The rest of the marks comes from a paper (20%) and assignments and group work (online worth 40%). So there are alot of free marks. Overall meh course

Online class for BIOL111 is absolutely terrible for people with no Bio knowledge. Lecture times are basically just group discussions on topics like COVID 19 and climate change, so ALL of the fundamental course content you literally have to read(assigned) by yourself on a virtual textbook. It's literally self study and it cannot be more draining.

Please stop using TopHat to replace lectures, it's not working. Lectures are just discussions and weekly group assignments with no recap about the readings. The pre-lecture readings take 2-3 hours + 30 min quiz... so exhausting. Your work is graded by any one of TA or profs but when I asked about my marks she said "answer the question asked"...

Personally, this professor's teaching style was unsuitable. The entire course is just self-study and group projects. If bio isn't your passion, avoid taking this course. Her primary interest is botany, and mostly the lecture doesn't cover other parts of bio.

I took BIOL111 class and it was a course that made you feel completely lost. the lecture was just 30 minutes and all the work was just self study over the weekend and group projects. The material was interesting but I did not like the way this course was structured and taught.

Parts of the course were interesting, but BIOL111 revolves around self-studying from TopHat and group projects. Her mini-lessons were quite boring but thankfully only half an hour long. Expect a ton of readings each week, too many group assignments, and your grades for big assignments will take 2-3 weeks. The class was okay, but she was very sweet.

Despite how friendly she was, the whole BIOL 111 makes me feel like a monkey on stage. The assignment was not at all made for us to learn, but rather to make the course looks "better". TOO MANY unnecessary group assignments which are inefficient. The course is so disorganized and should be carefully assessed before being taught to students.

This course is so disorganized. The reading is terribly heavy and the marking is harsh, they take away almost half of the points even for a small poster project that is only worth 5 points. The tests consist of multiple choices, listings, short answers, and an essay. And it's impossible to memorize that much stuff.

Man.... this is the only class I've taken so far at UBC where I was really offended that my tuition $$$ was being spent on such a terrible, unorganized course. PLEASE whoever designs this course, spread the actual testable lecture content over 3 days- not only Monday with pointless (yet mandatory) additional lectures on Wednesday and Friday!!!!!

Horribly disorganized. Lectures are mandatory but hardly useful. Ridiculously large amount of group work. The course falls far short of being able to teach to students. The teaching team and BIOL department re-assess this course seriously instead of experimenting it on students. We pay to learn, not to be offended.

Be prepared, don't be fooled by people and the "Suitable for upper-level Arts students." It's honestly not. I have a bit of background in plants yet I find this course difficult. Shona is definitely passionate about plants and you get to learn a lot from her. That being said, lots of presentations and group work, as well as quite a tough grader...

This course was terribly run. The labs were quite boring and not engaging at all. Monday videos lectures were the only useful part of the course. However, attendance was mandatory for Monday and Friday. She does not consider any of the feedback given by students. Tests were very hard. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!

4 weeks in the course but I am sure my opinion won't change. In-class lectures are highly irrelevant to TopHat topics we're supposed to self-study. Prof is hard to reach, piazza takes soooooo long to get a response. Harsh grader for assignments as well. The other prof teaching this course was slightly better.

Im in bio 111, we've had around 10-11 assignments a month, Ive learnt basically nothing. I go to tutoring in the nest to have them teach me everything. Finally they told us to prep for our exams using the learning objectives of which none were on the exams, and then pretty well everyone failed. also she can be very very dismissive.

Shona is super nice, gave us extensions many times, and replies to Piazza fast but I absolutely hated how the course was taught. We had so much to read before each class, a weekly quiz on the reading material, and lectures were basically "mini lessons" that had nothing to do with the reading material, but were still testable. So many projects too

Overall, Shona is a really kind person. The way the course is structured may not be the best, but as a prof she replies to Piazza really fast, and is very accomodating with deadlines and etc. You can also tell that she is deeply passionate in her field. This year, she also let us drop our midterm if we did better on the final, which was really nice

Shona is very nice and accessible, but the layout of the course is very bad. Almost all learning is done from the etextbook ($100 btw) outside of lecture, with weekly quizzes about that material. Lecture is mostly useless, and almost every assessment except exams were group projects. Cheat sheet allowed on exams makes them not too bad.

We had to learn everything from the $100 textbook coauthored by the professors. We weren't taught ANYTHING in lecuture. The first half hour of lecture was spent wasting our time on things unrelated to the curriculum and then rest was for group work.

A brutal prof, would impose an expensive textbook that she wrote on us. 15% of your grade depends on buying the textbook, looks like making money is a priority over teaching well. Would not recommend to take any class with her.

Shona herself is a amazing person. She's kind, considerate when you're struggling, and is like that old grandmother figure. The BIOL 111 course delivery, however, is not as great - you need to pay $100 for a textbook worth 15% of your grade, readings are heavy and every week, and all coursework are with groups. Only take BIOL 111 if you need it.

BIG NO. Prof is nice but the long answer questions on exams are absolutely absurd, like WHAT DO YOU EXPECT ME TO DO??? On the cheat sheet the whole thing taught in course is there and luckily the question got 100% matched with cheat sheet, in the end receives half the mark? like how on earth is this happening...

Lecture content consisted of slides filled with pictures often not relating to the actual course material.The exams asked questions which were mentioned briefly in class but were never in the textbook or slides. As someone who commutes as well lectures not being recorded and incomplete lecture slides made it very difficult if I had to miss class.

She's a nice person but her gradings are tough on the midterm. Lecture slides are not very helpful if you didn't take notes or go to lectures. No lecture recordings. She's very passionate in her studies and explains fairly well during lectures. Labs are very important and the midterms were hard, like you actually have to understand the materials.
