Jacobs is an absolutely wonderful lecturer that consistently creates connections to real world examples to help the class understand. She is passionate about Biology and entertaining. Additionally, the assignments are fairly easy to complete.
She is hot! And nice :D Truly a great professor and the lectures are interesting and not too difficult to follow.
Great professor! Inspiring! Needs to write a book about her life :) Her parents should be very proud of her! annnd she's got the hot chilli pepper! She is just WONDERFULLL
Average prof. Too happy that it gets annoying.
I took BIOL1500 with her and honestly she kept the class super interesting when it could've been abysmal - ha. She's a great lecturer and storyteller and it was overall a really good class to take. No textbook too which was dope.
Jacobs is a really great prof and is so nice. She will smile at you and come up and will start up conversations with the class. She really cares about her students and wants you to do well and is good at making sure you understand the material by using demonstrations. The course itself was pretty boring but she made the class enjoyable
Cool lady, you can tell she's into what she teaches. Sometimes she is confusing. When asking for help on the niche paper, found neither she or the TA I was in contact with was particularly helpful, but rather vague. Grading criteria is kind of non-existent (no word count).
Jacobs clearly cares so much about what she teaches. She's really passionate, and her stories on her research in the Arctic is pretty inspirational. She's also unusually human for a prof. and gets what you're going through as a student. Easily one of my favourite professors!
Fantastic lectures. Lots of enthusiasm.
She's a very fun professor. She likes to joke around and her lectures are very informal. By showing up to class you learn a lot and she makes the lectures exciting and intriguing. Would definitely recommend her for anyone for any type of biology class. As an added bonus, we had no textbook :)
Although BIOL1070 is my most dreaded class, Jaccobs makes it interesting. You can tell that she truly cares about what she's teaching. I found it inspirational how quickly she returned to class after having a baby. As a women hoping to work in science, she is role model by showing she followed her passion while having a family.
She's passionate about what she's teaching. She gives you sample exam questions during lectures and never gives you answers. The problem is that she is NOT clear with the course material, and makes it extremely difficult for you to actually understand concepts and apply them on the midterm. You can do well though, just study the quizzes.
She is really energetic and passionate about her work. She is too focussed on participation to the point where she won't continue unless someone volunteers to answer. Gives a lot of examples but without giving a simple definition at first so she's hard to follow.
The lectures were only 50 minutes long, but they felt like forever. Even so, you only learn little tidbits of things in them, most of your learning is from the online reading and homework.
It's not worth it.
She's the best
I personally am not a Biology student & only took this course to graduate. Jacobs makes science fun and interesting. She's really cool and fun, and obviously cares for you if you make yourself known to her. The class is heavy with class participation and group participation, so if you don't like that I would not suggest this class.
AVOID THIS CLASS. Assignment criteria is extremely vague, yet she expects so much out of you. Emailing her or a TA for help leaves you feeling even more confused about what you are supposed to do. Final was based entirely off things we never learned or dates of when things happened, which she specifically told us we didn't have to know.
One of the most engaging classes I've ever had. Be prepared to work for your mark but keep in mind that she is more than fair. She will explain to you your mark and remark if necessary.
Awesome professor. Very helpful and engaging. Loved her videos that she would show in class, and let's not forget about her signature "memes" as well. Hated the class though (not a science/evolution person).
I studied very hard for her mid term and final exams and did very poorly on both exams. It was by far the lowest mark I have ever received, I found her final exam to be very unfair. I found her to be quite rude when I approached her for help and her classes to be disorganized. The class was also not actually biology it was more archeology.
Lectures were mediocre for relevant course material and the most of the actual learning was done independently in online modules or through readings, but her and Gregory held extra lectures outside of class time to help students increase their critical thinking skills which I thought was awesome and most professors would unlikely do for students.
Dr Jacobs was a really good prof for Biol1070. She made the class interesting and easy to follow along. Would definitely recommend
She is very helpful and makes the classes entertaining. The midterms are very hard and we weren't given enough time to complete them.
she basically just follows the textbook, so her lectures can be kind of boring, but overall the class is pretty easy.
Dr. Jacobs is an awesome prof who pushes you to think critically in lecture and encourages you to give your input. She also gets you to do a lot of group discussions, the midterm was done as a group, and half of the final was done as a group too (she asked the class what they wanted to do). She wants everyone to do well :)
She takes her class way too seriously even though it is clearly a science class made for people who aren't science majors. She's not helpful at all, she's rude and she tries too hard to be funny. She expects way too much out of a first year course and her and her TAs mark way too hard. Don't take this class, one of the worst classes I've ever taken
Interesting to listen to in class, but I did not like how the course was structured at all. The lectures felt disorganized to me and I found she just wants to be unconventional, but then sacrifices some really useful things (no handouts or helpful guidelines to study for exams). Lots of group-work. I felt lost whether I went to lectures or not.
The lectures although unconventional were entertaining and maintained my current interest in the field. Group projects, seminars and weekly quizzes were fairly easy and kept my mark up amidst my mediocre test scores. The tests were hard to study for and you never really feel confident going into them but as a whole, they were alright.
Honestly she's a cool teacher and is interesting. But this woman is terrible at explaining "course material", if any, & often says things irrelevant to questions that would be asked in evaluations, & often she'll blame students for not getting the right answers. Maybe it's the teaching, not the students? I liked "biodiversity" until I took this.
Shoshanah is so focused on providing an alternative or unconventional form of group learning that she often fails to teach at all. The lecture slides are not useful and contain no actual content and so you're left feeling lost at midterm and exam time.
Shoshanah is an amazing prof. She is passionate, really knowledgeable, and tells incredible stories based on her experiences. Very inspiring biologist. I found the course itself really easy but I can understand why certain people do not like it. You can't learn bio1070 from a textbook, it is heavily based on your analysis and critical thinking.
Professor Jacobs is by far the worst professor I have ever had. So superficial, wouldn't give a proper lecture because she felt that's an improper way to teach. No textbook, basically had to just guess what to review. Absolutely horrible professor but still did well due to the nature of bio 1070. Every other bio prof I've had was fantastic, shame.
Horrible professor. Easy course made bad by the exams. Exams sucked so bad, don't test you on anything you learned. Wouldn't take off a question only 23% of people got on exam. Thinks everything is an improper way to teach, so there's no textbook/info. NEVER take this course unless you want to bring down your average! Ruined biodiversity for me!
HATED THE COURSE AND HER TEACHING STYLE!
Not even three classes in and she spends so much time trying to be "cool!" and "relatable!" that I have no clue what I'm doing. Her lectures are bad, the textbook is USELESS and TAs are tough markers and not at all helpful.
She's condescending, and insists on being called Doctor.
Challenging. Her course makes you think and I'm not used to it so I'm struggling. But she cares alot and I like that we can go and see her to ask questions. Different teaching style and we have to participate. Do the homework
if you're an A student who wants to add additional stress to your already stressful life, or want to know what it feels like to study like no other, do review Q's and review tests AND still fail exams, then this is the class for you! And it's going to feel just great to know that the students who did well on the exams guessed their answers!
Her teaching style is very different, but I really love how it challenges me and makes me a better student. The textbook is an easy read and the assignments are pretty simple. If you go to class and listen, then put in basic effort on your own, you will do fine! She is also really caring and tries to be helpful.
Almost all of the lectures are absolutely pointless, as she posts lecture notes on courselink before tests. We spent three lectures talking about the same, simple concept. The niche paper is ridiculously long, and some of the midterm questions made no sense at all. I do not recommend this class. Seems like a nice enough person but the class sucks.
Worse class. I studied weeks in advance for exams and still failed or barely passed. The assignments are graded way to hard for a first year class. The exams are a guessing game and if you guess right you'll do great. Never take this course if you don't have too. The fact that I am doing better in CHEM 1040 then this class, says something.
studying for the exams was impossible because the profs (her and Gregory) don't teach you anything
Loved her as a prof however some of her TA's sucked!! the TA's split the marking differently each time so you never knew if you were going to get an easy marker or a very nit picky one.
Shoshannah is engaging in her lectures, however is unclear as to what she wants in her assignments. Niche assignment in this course was very open ended and got limited feedback on it. Textbook and actual course didnt correspond with each other.
Dr. Jacobs focusses on critical thinking and applied exams. If you hate being lectured at then take this course.
She's got a different style and expects alot from her students. You have to work hard but she'll make herself available to help. Lots of thinking questions and class activities.
One of my favorite bio classes so far! Although, the exams are challenging as Dr. Jacobs tests your application and understanding of the material and not the facts or any specific information. Get ready to read and research on your own if you want to succeed in this class.
Dr. Jacobs, while unusual in her lecture style, is very intelligent and student-focused. She pushes you outside of your comfort zone and forces you to actively learn. Don't expect to buy answers for quizzes and then pass the midterm. The mixture of grading sources evens out the difficulty of the test questions.
Worst class ever. ALL questions on assessments are application-based, extremely subjective, and debatable. If your brain is wired in the exact way hers is, you'll arrive at the correct answer - if not, you're screwed! In some clicker questions, 20-30% of the class answered correctly. Getting a way higher mark in chem & physics and that says a lot.
Very good at explaining the material and was open to come see her in her office hours.
Jacobs really cares about her students. Yes, she does a 'new math' way of teaching but you get used to it.
Although I really liked Dr. Jacobs as a person, I disliked how she lectured and tested material. Exams are all application-based, so they are difficult to study for since you are expected to apply concepts (not specific material). She is very approachable however, and wants her students to succeed so go to her office hours if you're struggling.
Jacobs is an amazing prof. She is incredibly knowledgeable in her field and brings her experience and stories into every lecture. She is engaging in lectures and makes early morning class a breeze. Marking was incredibly fair for this course. No memorization just understand the main concepts and apply some critical thinking!
Dr. Jacobs makes you think about the course and its concepts more by making you think of possible scenarios and applications of a certain topic. While her exams are fair game, you would benefit greatly by attending her classes!
Dr Jacobs is 100% the best prof i've has thus far. She is caring, kind, and respectful. Her lectures are clear, easy to follow along and intersting. She tends to explain concepts and then back them up with examples so if you don't get it at first don't worry. She is always willing to help you out 1 on 1 if needed. Take her class if you can!
Dr. Jacobs is AMAZING! By far the best prof so far. Her way of teaching is somewhat odd but she truly knows how to get you to apply your knowledge. Exams can be hard because they are all application based but go to lecture and you will get a good idea from the clicker q's
Professor Jacobs is by far one of my favourite professors at UofG. She is super caring and takes her time to help students. Although I did not enjoy learning the course material, she made it very fun. The midterms were based on applying the knowledge you've learned rather than general knowledge. I would recommend taking her if you can!
She is really inspirational with her stories but she doesn't like the traditional way of teaching with slides. She likes to get you to think critically and learn through activities, which took me some time to adapt to. This makes her midterms and finals also hard as she likes to make them all thinking questions, but a fun experience.
Shoshanah is caring, passionate, has a lot of energy for each lecture, and tries to help as much as possible. Shoshanah's examples are similar to the ones posted on quizzes, midterms, and the exam. Going to class is necessary to understand how the examples are answered.
Jacobs was super caring and really wanted everyone to succeed. I had bio 1070 this past winter, and when classes were switched to being online due to COVID she was SO understanding and really made it accessible for everyone. I felt very well prepared for the midterms and the exams and ended with a very high mark
Dr. Jacobs was so intelligent and so passionate about the course, it made it quite interesting. Ecology isnt a major area of interest to me but her and Dr. Smith kept class very interesting! They were the only profs of mine who were able to deliver amazing lectures online following the COVID-19 closure of the school.
There are a lot of modules that you have to do and they can take a while, but they are easy marks. We were told the midterms and exams were going to be super hard, but I studied and always got above 80. Jacobs is a passionate and engaging prof and I enjoyed her lectures!
What type of exam was this? Midterms and exams are really hard compared to the quizzes and seminar assignments. I studied so hard and still barely pass. awful!
Course content was fine, lectures were always organized in a way to get everyone involved. BUT my issue was the midterms and finals. They were ridiculously confusing.
DR Jacobs was an amazing prof, they're super nice and passionate about what they're teaching! the lectures were informative and the weekly quizzes were easy. They genuinely care about the students and understand our situations. Would 100% take again. Some of the course content was a bit hard when it came to the exam.
She one of the most accessible and caring profs I had this sem. One of the only ones who did online school right. Fun lectures. Super funny. Took time out of her day to talk to me personally and never didn't respond to an email. Exams are difficult, studying won't really improve your mark. Other than exams, the assignments are easy and fun.
Dr Jacobs is an outstanding professor and friend. They deeply care for their students and will assist them with problems inside the class and outside of the class. Course content is pretty straightforward as no memorization is needed, just understanding of general concepts. Highly recommend taking a class with Dr Jacobs to gain a friend and mentor
They are so nice, they make lectures really fun and engaging, there's lots of room to participate.
Dr. Jacobs truly cares about her students! Her lessons were always fun and I found the course really easy to do well in. The midterms are tricky if you don't REALLY understand the content, the online quizzes are not a comparable difficulty
Dr. Jacobs is an amazing prof! They are so enthusiastic and positive, and really try to motivate students! They also are very fair when it comes to exams and give great study tips.
Dr. Jacobs is such a fantastic prof! I joined the class later in the semester and they were very clear in explaining expectations to me one on one and made me feel supported in the course. Always enjoyed their lectures alongside Dr. Grunspan, never failed to make me smile on a Monday morning.
I had Dr. Jacobs as a prof along with Dr. Smith during the Winter 2020 sem. Obviously, the semester end was rough but these teachers handled it well and made me feel supported. I love Dr. Jacob's insight from her own research on gulls in the arctic. This was a great class and easy to pass if you pay attention and take notes.
Awful teaching style. Lectures felt like a TVO kids program. Courselink page is a nightmare to navigate. ALL Instructions are convoluted and disorganized. Before the class even started I was bombarded with completely unnecessary emails and they were some of the longest emails I have ever received! Only course I've really hated, and I'm acing it :/
Took during the Fall 2022 semester with Dr. Jacobs and Dr. Smith. They went above and beyond to be sensitive to student wellness but had an unorthodox teaching style which I struggled with. Lots of fun participation but little in ways of concrete information. Prepare to do a lot of self-studying to make up for it. High workload for a 1000-level.
this course was super fun (but I love biodiversity) they taught with their husband. If you have any issues reach out. They truly care and want you to succeed and be happy.
Very easy class and Prof Jacobs didn't make it any harder. Never really needed to go to lectures but they are very interactive despite being online. Test questions were really vague which was the only thing that made them hard.
Amazing prof and cares about their students!!!
doesn't understand science
Treated Biol 1070 like a joke, felt like a social studies or an arts class. It's mandatory for BSc degrees.
Had them my first semester of 1st year and they are still my one of my favourite profs of all time. Great at teaching the material and they def care about their work.
You could tell they really cared about the students and was super progressive. Made the lectures super enjoyable and even though the class was online I loved every second of it. We coloured at the start of class :)
Definitely my favourite professor this semester. They are so passionate about teaching and really care about the well-being of their students.
Obviously knew their stuff well but class was a joke. Lectures weren't to learn from save for a few things, it's mostly common knowledge. Also they lecture with their partner, and it felt like I was intruding on a conversation. I'd take another class w them because I know it's easy grades. Just don't expect to really learn much in 1070.
Taught with partner, and honestly really nice people who really do a great job of making class entertaining, only problem was, with biol1070, it is a really boring, easy, common knowledge course for the most part. So it was just extremely hard to pay attention, especially near the end of the semester.
Professor Jacobs is a lovely person and one of my favorite profs so far!! They're clearly very passionate about what they teach and want every student to suceed. They always start off class with some music and are always open to discussion. Tests are open book but they're also application based so make sure you use the study tool beforehand.
Chill with deadlines, I liked how the lecture style was interactive and engaging, but found it hard to study
I loved having them as my professor! Their spouse also taught the class with them and it was so much fun! They were very engaging and the squirrel walk assignment was my favourite assignment so far in university.
interesting individual
Class was not enganging and professor was generally unpleasant. Would not take a course with this professor again.
the professor will say what to do on the assignments and when you get the feedback back, the ta's say that its not what you were supposed to do. also assignments are very vague with little to no description and when asking the professor for clarification, they dance around the question and dont answer it properly.
Best prof ever! Dr. Jacobs answered all my emails quickly and genuinely wanted to see their students succeed. 8 assignments and no exams/quizzes/tests. There were two virtual lectures a week, but they were always recorded so attendance isn't mandatory.
Professor Jacobs is an engaging instructor who makes the course material interactive. While the content can be dry, their teaching style and use of unstuck study for study prep help keep things lively. Attendance is mandatory, but tests are open-book and focus on application.
Super nice prof and really interesting course
Prof Jacobs lectures were super interesting, course load was not too heavy. Overall a very enjoyable class!
Super easy and light class (I took online), engaging zoom meetings. However the assignments are marked hard without much clarification or guidance.
She is not great, the course is also boring. Didn't learn much at all. Talked too much about social justice and not enough about basic scientific knowledge you have to have to succeed in university. The course doesn't have any foundational knowledge that necessitates its existence or requirement. 1/10 class rating
Personally, I would never take a class with this prof again. The assignments are extremely vague, and when looking for more information, their advice is just as ambiguous. They are extremely positive and giddy, which tbh was too much for me, but if that's your thing then you should be fine. It just felt super forced and annoying.
This course with Prof Jacobs was ridiculous and boring. The assignments were ambiguous, vague, and graded on rubrics that were not given to us beforehand, so it was impossible to know what we were going to be graded on. I felt like I was back in grade 5 to be honest.
Dr. Jacobs is super friendly, makes the class accessible to BA students and considers mental health. No midterms, no exams, just assignments that are relatively easy with soft deadlines and lowest grade gets dropped. There's no rubrics, so instructions aren't always clear, but if you treat it like a high school class it starts to make sense.
Very vague instructions on assignments. No tests. Professor was nice but I personally did not have a good learning experience with them and did not learn much.
The assignments had little to no instructions and were weighted weirdly. The class is super easy and they are super kind and understanding. They care a lot about teaching and are very interactive in class despite it being an online course.
Dr.Jacobs is a very nice professor, however, the lectures and assignments were very boring. I would only recommend taking this class if you are trying to fulfill a natural sciences credit or don't mind vague written assignments.
I wouldn't suggest taking if you're looking for an "easy science credit." Instructions for assignments aren't clear and no rubric is given. Prof even posted a list of student's grades related to their students number; I noticed no students were excelling in the class.
They care alot about their students and seem to want the best for them. Was very energetic and if you come with questions they will be helpful. However most of the assignments were very vague and didn't have a rubric. Not too hard tho. Take this class if your okay with vague assignments every week
