so happy and enjoys teaching, my fav teach of all time

run he's a terrible teacher
He is a super easy teacher as long as you take a few notes and show up to class. He is very funny and is very passionate about his job. As long as you put your opinion and "feelings" into your summaries then you are set. Take this class from Shu Dong Chen!
great teacher, have to play close attention as accent can be distracting
great guy. really passionate, enthusiastic and smart. You will enjoy his class.
Great teacher, without a doubt one of the best at JCCC. The class is easy with one stipulation: You need to try and show passion in what you're writing about, I highly reccomend the class, great guy!
Horrible teacher...talks way to much about how great he thinks he is. Always uses asian art as examples rather than samples from everywhere. Hard to understand his broken English. Very very bad teacher. Run as fast as you can!
I have really enjoyed this class. He offers ALOT of extra credit. You'll have no problem with this course as long as you come to class and participate. I am only and average student where my grades are concerned and I received and A. It is an easy course like I said just show up and try!
Dr. Chen is fabulous. he expects you to put in effort, show up to class, and EXPRESS YOURSELF. Class participation is a really big thing to him, also when writinh for him, show your fellings, don't jujdt regurgitate what he says or the book says. Very fair, Very Clear, Very Passionate. Excellent!

whoever said he was a terrible teacher..it must not be him, it's probably you. you can't even spell humanities
I loved Chen he was my favorite teacher at JCCC. He lets you really express your opinion on art. I love the way he approaches art. He wants to know how younge people interpret remarkable art. Best advice is to take the class and show up you will not be able to pass unless you do. Take all you can from this class
Could never even understand the man
An amazing teacher and very intelligent about art, he has an accent but it is worth your time to listen to him.
Prof. Chen is my favorite teacher of ALL TIME!!! Just show up to class and express yourself when taking the daily responses. Write as much as you can, talk in class, and attend almost all classes and you will get an A. If you don't take him you are missing out!
Very easy class, just participate and show up to class. He's open minded and can express his feelings and clearly defines the points he's trying to get across. Excellent teacher.
Great teacher. Almost zero homework or out of the classroom work. Come to class and get an A. The more you talk in disucssions the better the grade. I learned a great deal about a subject I knew little about. Enjoy.
He's really funny but he's hard to understand. He's not very clear about what he wants you to do sometimes and you really have to take notes and do everything yourself. But it wasn't that bad.
Great teacher. Hard to understand at first, but well worth it. He has made me look at the world in a different way. I can't say that about many other teachers.
This teacher was amazing! He was so excited about his subject that it makes you want to acutally learn! He is totally easy going and makes a point to get to know you as a person. Great teacher, and I loved his class. Strongly recommend this teacher by all means!
This professor is great...He loves his subject and teaches with enthusiasm...I would recommend him if you have to have a humanities class...great professor and tells you what he expects in work
I didnt think he was a good teacher. He never really taught anything. He just kind of put something on the overhead and tell us to write about it. H does this EVERY SINGLE DAY. Nothing else. Oh wait somedays we watch a movie and write about. The most useless class ever.
Yes, you have lots of writing, but he grades easily. I attended all of his classes, he is a very nice, funny guy. If you can get past his accent and understand him and give and show him respect and interest, you will undoubtedly pass with an A.
Excellent teacher! Loves what he teaches, so you enjoy listening to him. No hard tests at all, some reading, but not bad. Can be hard to understand at times b/c he is from China, but he is an excellent, and knowledgeable teacher!
He is very nice, funny, and really knows what he is teaching. He makes you think in your class. The tests are pretty easy. He gives you a list of questions that could be on the test and then picks like 3 to actually use. You have to do alot of one-page essays and writing, but its not too bad. Be prepared to write alot about art and your feelings.
Dr. Chen is great! Was off to a rocky start at the beginning of the semester but worked to correct that. There is a lot of papers to write such as in class responses to paintings and sculptures. If you need an "A" in this class, I would highly suggest doing every possible extra credit assignment. It helps! If you do that You will get an "A".
He is a great professor. he is so passionate about his teaching. He covers all of the material in class. there are no surprises. he's really funny and has funny stories. he does spit, so don't sit in the front row.
Mr. chen is one of my favorite teachers ever! he is extreamly funny. every single day he is constantly laughing it makes calss a lot more fun. his class isnt to hard either. mainly this dude is hillarious i liked him
Shudong Chen is one of the best teachers i have had at JCCC. there is a lot of writing but its all about your opinion and he gives you a good grade if you tell him what you really think. He's a realy nice guy easy to get along with and an easy A. He also gives alot of extra credit. Great class
He is really funny and never in a bad mood. You go to class, look at pieces of art, write a response, and leave. 4 tests, no comprehensive final. If you do all the work and write your opinions thoroughly you'll get a good grade. He takes points for attendance which is annoying. He is also Japanese and i could barely understand him..not too helpful
One thing about this class is that you HAVE to attend. He doesn't accept late work and won't let you make anything up. He is a really good teacher though, and quite funny!
Hilarious, one of the best teachers I've had at Juco. Pretty easy, but makes the class fun and interesting. Recommend for sure.
Probably the best teacher at Juco. I actually learned stuff in his class because he made it interesting and fun. Tells great silly stories and really wants to know your opinion on artwork, music, etc. Easy class, enjoyable.
The assignments are very simple although its not entirely clear whats needed to get a good grade, sometimes id get a b- and sometimes an a, for no apparent reason. also i missed a class and emailed him the paper BEFORE class, and got an email from him about 5 days later saying hed gotten it "much too late", had to involve the dept chair to fix it
Wonderful teacher. You MUST attend class. No makeup work allowed unless under extreme circumstances. All of the questions on the tests are related to things discussed IN CLASS. Highly recommended.
Definitely an intriguing man full of a great understanding of Humanity. Makes the class fun because he really enjoys sharing his knowledge. At times hard to understand. But he will ask you "Do you understand?" To do well in this class: Show up to class, do your work, make your case in your essays and use examples from the class.
EXCELLENT teacher. Attend class, take notes and you'll do great. Prof. Chen is very intelligent with a deep understanding of humanities, he does a great job at explaining exactly what is needed to do well. HW is infrequent and he gives the exact questions to study before the test. It would be hard not to do well...I suppose if you were really lazy.
if you didn't show up for class you are pretty much screwed. can't miss more than 6 days if you wanna pass the course. if you miss a day you miss out on a lot of points that you can't make up.. he won't let you make up anything...
Proffessor Chen is one of the best teachers I have ever had. If you are taking classes seriously (i.e., you show up every day and are willing to do homework even when it is not assigned),you will probably enjoy his class. and to correct another poster, he is Chinese, not Japanese.
He always tells you exactly what he wants to hear and expects. He also gives extra credit opportunities and will always try and give you the most points possible. Just demonstrate that you want to learn and care.
You must show effort and improvement in this class in order to get a good grade. Great teacher! TAKE HIM!
He is extremely intelligent & has a huge passion for the arts. He has a thick accent, and at times he is hard to understand. If you attend class and put forth effort you will do fine. If not, you will severely struggle.
Wonderful teacher. A little hard to understand, have to listen closely. Need to attend class, participate, and turn in papers. Gives extra credit. Easy A. Really enjoyed Prof. Chen and the class.
The most frustrating class I've ever taken. He is hard to understand, but that is only a small part of the issue. If you really enjoy the arts and have some background, you may do OK. But if you don't intuitively understand what art is "good" and why, or don't believe that art is root of all humanity, then he has a very low opinion of you.
Chen is somewhat hard to understand but he is a very good teacher. He gives extra credit. When you write your responses on pieces you can say it totally sucks as long as you back up why it sucks. If you go to class and put forth effort it's an easy A. I'd recommend Chen.
No leeway at all. Miss class - tough. Many assignments are given in class, due next class, that count for part of a test score. No make up allowed for any missed class for ANY reason. Very hard to follow. Doesn't really lecture - just expects you to know it.
This class was the hardest ive ever taken. I didnt think the material was hard, just the way he grades isnt right. He deff picks favorites and isnt fair at all. I didnt learn one thing from his class, he expects you to learn on your own with the textbook. I would NOT recommend him to anyone.
I received an A in his World Humanities class and I literally worked my butt off to get it. You are required to write 10 papers in this class, 1 page each. Sounds easy, but it's a lot of work. I attended every class and even received some of the highest grades on my papers and only got a 91% in the class. Prof. Chen is nice, but this class is rough
Too hard and boring class..
Too hard to get a good grade..and class is too boring.. NEVER take his classes
Prof Chen was a very interesting teacher to listen to. I attended every class and found it very easy. The class is entirely based on your opinion so if your able to back up your opinion in each paper you will do fine. Yea there are quite a few papers but I was able to type each in 20 minutes and get A's on all of them. I would recommend taking Chen
Hardest classes I've ever had.. tests are so hard, and classes are boring and difficult. You have to take his lectures carefully to get a good grade, but it is almost impossible because of his accent.
You HAVE to go to class, he passes a paper around and does not allow late signing. But if you, pay attention you can get a pretty easy A. There are 4 test, which are only 2 questions and you write anything you want. And so much extra credit (that you kinda have to do). So expect a lot of homework, but e easy class. Thick accent, but understandable.
If you dont get an A in this class there is a problem. He is a very funny guy and he makes class enjoyable. He is very knowledgeable in this subject. He gives tons of extra credit opportunities many of which are very easy. Take Chen it is a good class.
This guy rocks. The first few classes though, he is hard to understand because his accent is so thick. But after the first week you'll catch on. Even if you don't understand him, he's so animated, you can tell what he's saying. He obviously loves the subject and gets excited about teaching it. Grades are based on your opinions only. FUN CLASS!
Hardest and most boring class I've ever had.. This was my first semester in college and I actually had fun in all of my classes, but not in this one. He expects you to know about art even though the class is an INTRODUCTION, Besides that, he has a thick accent, which makes it very hard to understand
Grades way too hard. Doesn't understand that his students have lives, jobs, and other priorities outside of his class. Expects you to write a term paper on a piece of art 30 miles away at a museum when you cant take off work or afford the gas to get up there.
EXTREMELY hard to get a good grade because he expect you to study a lot, and classes are not helpful.
Do yourself a favor and choose a different professor for this course. Very difficult to understand and figure out what he wants you to write. HARD grader! A lot of in class writing so you can't miss class. Nice man with a passion for what he's teaching but if you don't "show him the money"-his favorite saying, you will have trouble getting an A.
His English is hard to understand, but you kind of get used to it. In this class you write about different forms of art. I think his class was easy. Make sure to take notes and repeat what he says in your writing and you will get an A. He also offers a lot of extra credit and up to 100 points for attendance, then another 50 for perfect attendance.
We seldomly ever open the text book and his english is terrible. The class is easy if you can get over his love of china and all things asian. his attendence is manditory and he teachs the class like a middle school class (writing boring bs every single class without any substance to it). I highly recomend avoiding the class to retain sanity.
He makes students look at a piece of art and write their reactions to it.He has already made up is mind about it.Your grade is based on how close your reaction is to his opinion. Also good luck trying to understand him half the time. His accent Chinese mixed with British English. He says "do you understand what I am saying" when it doesn't make sense
This teacher was wonderful! Hard to understand at first but you get used to his accent. My entire class loved him. He adores what he is doing & is a very happy guy. He is helpful & very open to other opinions & ideas. An interesting class and fairly easy A, as long as you show up to most classes & pay attention.
Mr. Chen really knows his stuff! It takes a little time to get used to his accent but he is very clear on what he expects. I had a hard time with this class because I am very black and white but I thought he was a great teacher. He is very tough on late assignments but he is very nice that at the end of the semester he gives lots of Extra credit!
NEVER communicates how you are doing in the class. Draws huge red slash marks on papers without any comments. Never communicates why you received the grade you got. No consistency in grading. One paper you'll get an A, the next you'll get a D.
This guy is hilarious and very good at what he does. Once you figure out what he's looking for it's a breez! Idk what people are talking about, he is very fair and really gets into what he is talking about! He is super easy and every response is extra credit (which there's one everyday). It's pretty hard to fail his class.
Show up to class like you show up to work and you should be well off. Professor Chen is full of passion and that passion is what keeps the class going. The class is a lot of opinion based work which I loved. As long as you can display an understanding of the information and show support for your opinion you should be set. Show Chen the money!
Yes, you have to show up to class and turn in a paper once a week at most, shocker. But he KNOWS this stuff cold. He's written many books and papers on the subject, and has been teaching longer than I've been alive. He gives lectures that had me leaving each class with a new perspective of the world. You know he loves this subject and his job.
Mr. Chen's teaching style was so unclear that when you'd write your opinions on artwork, it's never right. He gives no feedback, and there's a big red slash mark in the middle of your paper. He acts as if all his students already know about humanities. When we'd ask questions about the material. He wouldn't give us a definite answer.
He's an alright teacher. Mr. Chen is a nice guy but a times makes no sense when he teaches. His grading is unreasonable and even though it's all opinion based, it's never what he's looking for. If you miss more than five classes, your done. The only good thing about the class is he gives some extra credit.
He is the smartest person I have ever met and learned so much from him!!!
Fantastic teacher. Finds a way to relate the topics in class to everyday things to help you better understand the topics. He shows a lot of movies and gives quizes based off of them. Gets you interest in the topics and class. As long as you show up to class he is an easy A.
He will not help you catch up what so ever.
I love Shu Dong!! At first I absolutely dreaded his class because he was hard to understand but I started recording his lectures so I could listen more carefully and it totally helped me understand him more in class. He doesn't grade based on opinion but on understanding. Don't skip, take good notes, write all the essay prompts out & you got it!!
Show up to class make sure that you speak even if it's not right because he gives points for every time you speak like if you say sentence he give you like five points and if you write down everything he writes on the board and use those words when critiquing art you'll get maximum points. You'll have many points you don't need to take the final
I though this would be a super hard course on the Arts.I learned a lot and the most impressive part was my visit to the Nelson Adkins Museum.I was totally blown away.
Mr Chen is a fun character and very passionate about the arts! SHOW UP! PARTICIPATE! Pay attention to the words that he uses when writing responses to pieces or clips. VERY IMPORTANT! He gives lots of extra points. A little tough to break out of his POV but not closed off to difference of opinions. I would definitely take another class from him.
Shu Dong Chen was a very bad teacher. I have never been super creative my whole life and I tried to open my mind a bit to analyze pieces of art but he was never satisfied with what I had to say. I eventually dropped the class because he was not giving me enough points to make it through the semester, so I gave up. Never take this teacher.
You have to make sure you attend class every time because you have mini extra credit EVERY class worth 5 points. He was a very hard grader and if you didn't voice your opinion right he wouldn't give the full five points for even trying. Make sure you participate so you can earn extra points. Overall a tough grader, not a class you can miss.
Professor Chen is a great teacher. You will do well in the class if you SHOW UP and PARTICIPATE. There are points given every class and attendance is mandatory. If you speak up in class he will give you extra credit. Overall great teacher and person. Think outside of the box and pay attention to his lectures!
The class is very much opinion based. However, you will not do well on any of your assignments if your opinion does not agree with his. It is very very difficult to know what he wants in his responses from his students. This is the most frustrating course I have taken because of the grading on everything. Would not recommend.
Chen is a good professor but he is hard to understand. If you aren't good with accents be careful. He is nice and wants you to do well but he can also be very strict about weird things so just be respectful and you will be fine. Do well on the homework and little assignments and it will pay off. I got to skip the final because I did well on them.
The exams are very opinion based. You will do well on exams if your opinions agree with his. Listen in class and answer the EXAM questions on what you think HIS opinion will be not yours. BUT DO express your opinion on all non-exam class assignments. Class participation and attendance MATTERS GREATLY. It reflects highly in your grade.
He helped me understand Humanities, and was very patient
I believe he tries to teach everyone how to better appreciate and understand humanities by having us write whatever emotions we feel when presented with different forms of art from different parts of human history. I went into this class with an open mind and found it to be quite eye-opening. Also, we didn't have a lot of homework.
