Professor Sun is very funny, but can be difficult to understand at times. His lectures can be all over the place. I would definitely read his lecture notes and the chapters out of the book before exams
He's got a good sense of humor, but like the person before me said, he is all over the place and very hard to understand. Attendance is basically mandatory because of clicker questions. I've found that I learn more teaching the material to myself that I do going to lecture. Only really good thing is he always tells you what is on the next test.
Smart man, but should not be teaching other people. Makes things more complicated than they have to be. I went into this course with a lot of Chemistry knowledge and am leaving more confused. Homework is too hard and too long.
Get a tutor
Dr. Sun makes chemistry more confusing than it has to be. I took AP chemistry in high school, and he is teaching the harder way to do things. The Mastering Chemistry takes forever and isn't even worth that much of your grade.
Dr. Sun makes this class ridiculously confusing - I took several chemistry classes in high school, so this class should not be hard. The lectures are worthless, but you need to be in class for clicker points.
Professor Sun tries really hard to make everyone pass. He is almost always available outside of class, makes notes so you can follow along during class, makes practice assignments to do at home, etc. If you want to pass, you will, but it's very easy to get away with minimal effort. If you don't take advantage of his handouts, tests will be hard.
Dr. Sun makes this class WAY harder than it has to be. I took AP chem in high school and expected this class to be fairly easy. His lectures and notes are very disorganized. When I went into his office hours for help, he told me to look at the lecture notes-not helpful at all. I was able to get an A in this class only because I had a helpful lab TA
His lectures are all over the place and very difficult to understand. The homework is unhelpful because it is hardly related to the material on the test. The class overall is disorganized and hard to understand. I do not recommend.
Shuia Sun's class will probably be a real treat. You've gotta actually try to do well, but it's not too hard.
Clearly knows his material, but is absolutely abysmal at transferring this information onto the class. Lectures are all over the place. Many of his slides are often ill prepared or even incorrect, Had only 1 exam where he hasn't had to correct a choice or question in the middle of the work time. Lectures you on why his shoddy work is excusable.
Dr. Sun knows his chemistry well and he makes class fun. Just like any class you have to study in order to pass. He has office hours and I go to him or the TA whenever I need help. If you put in the effort, like I have than I'm sure you'll get a fair grade.
Good profesor! Can have trouble translating his slides.
My time in Dr. Sun's class was fairly good. He was a decent professor, often funny, and was willing to help outside of class. The tests are hard, the homework is long, but it's chemistry, what did you expect?
The class is very disorganized. Dr. Sun went through the first module so slowly it was maddening, then went through thermo, gases, and quantum way too fast, then slowed down again for orbitals. Be prepared for homework with only a day's notice, and to use outside sources to teach yourself, especially if you're moving on to the next chem class.
This is honestly one of the worst classes I've taken at the university. Although he is charming during lectures and explains things kinda well, his exams are no where near as simple as his lectures and he asks you questions that he hasn't even covered in the notes. Would NEVER take the class again. I had to drop it because of how poorly I did.
Shuai Sun is an okay professor. He is a terrible lecturer, as he is loud, fast, and doesn't explain his clicker questions very well. He can also tend to be a little condescending. However, he makes himself accessible and if you try, it isn't hard to get an A.
I enjoy his lectured and never missed a class. I did not do well on exams but that is my own fault because he offers so much in the way of practice that if you put in the time and effort you can get a really good grade. He always has office hours and has always been very nice to me when I went.
Sun was a great professor! If you read the textbook, as he instructs you to, complete the practice homework, and study his slides, you will do well in his class. He gives you ALL the resources you need to pass his exams, just do what he says! He is a bit hard to understand at first, but you get used to it .
Shaui was a great professor but moved extremely fast and sometimes passed over subjects too quickly. He offered a lot of examples in class and adapted his style to fit our classes needs based on feedback. Overall very funny and very smart, you'll pass if you put in a little effort.
He makes his lectures interesting with his humor throughout the class. It's easy to get in contact with him outside of class if you need help understanding anything. He provides tons of resources to prepare for tests that will make exams easy if you take advantage of them all.
He is a great guy and will help you whenever you need it. He also understands everyone is human.
One of the easiest classes I've ever taken. Do the nightly homework, show up to a few lectures, and study the practice tests hard. No reason to not get a high A in this class.
Prof. Sun is very enthusiastic and patient to answer students' questions, which is like what he did in the class. The course he does is also very easy to pass because he gave extra credit in everyexams. Same as chem135 he does.
Shuai is a LIFECHANGING proffesor. He is incredibly inspirational and will make you cry many times during lectures from his inspirational speeches alone. When it comes to classwork, there is a lot of it but it is very easy and not time consuming at all. Shuai is always available to help and is an awesome Prof!
He is super nice and will help you if you reach out. If you do the work and study you'll be fine.
Shuai is a great lecturer and is always available to help. I chose to take his higher level chemistry course the following semester because I enjoyed him so much. His tests are multiple choice and he gives great opportunities for extra credit as long as you take them. Pay attention, do your homework, and study for the texts, you should receive an A
he is one of the only professors i have met who truly cares about us as people, not just bodies he is forced to teach. And he loves the material he teaches. By far the best chem professor at this school.
His lectures were very fast paced with clicker questions for participation. Tests we hard and worth a lot of points. Pre and post lecture homework online. The extra credit saved my grade! DO THE EXTRA CREDIT
Shuai was a great professor, gives lots of opportunities for extra credit and is always available outside of class, especially around exams.
Shuai is an incredible professor. I am no longer a STEM major, but I always enjoyed his class and would take more chemistry just to be near him. Such a cutie and gives tons of extra credit, plus inspirational speeches.
Shuai is super helpful and willing to go the extra mile for students. He is consistently sending midnight reminders and updates about homework etc. Super committed to students. Get to know him early on in office hours. He loves that. He makes chemistry as enjoyable as it could be. Tests aren't bad if you do the test reviews. Take the class with him
He is one of the nicest, sincere people I've ever met. He wants all of us to succeed and understand chemistry. Make sure to study for the exam, since there's only 25 questions, but if even if you don't do well there's a lot more points that you can make it up with. My class definitely fell in love with him, he's the sweetest.
BOTTOM LINE: he's a great professor and provides you with all the tools AND MORE (hella extra easy credit) you need to get an A in this class. I don't care what others say, I hated chem in high school but got A's in both 130 & 135. Do hw, study and be engaged in lecture. If you fail, its because you failed to prepare. Not Shuai's fault whatsoever.
Absolutely amazing professor, you will absolutely love having him. He gives inspirational talks every now and then and they are really what got me through the semester. Also a pretty easy A!
One of the BEST professor at KU. Lots of easy extra credit opportunities (50-55points) and office hours. Chem 130 has 4 exams and 135 has 5 exams (accumulative final). It is not hard to get an A in the class, but you have to work for it. Make sure to do well in the lab and the homework+iclickers.
I took Chem 130 with a different professor and had only heard great things about Shuai. It was a little bit of the let-down as lectures were hard to follow, however he seems to be very available outside of class and is well respected by most students. The amount of extra credit he gives is such a huge help. Just be sure to apply yourself.
Great teacher, wants to help as much as possible and a has a ton of office hours.
If you do all the homework (pre and post), attend lectures regularly, and actively participate in lab you will be just fine. With all that being said, studying for the exams is the most important thing. Practice exams are very similar to the exams. If you want an A, spend lots of time studying. Getting an A is possible, but you have to work for it.
Shuai was a great, he truly knew how to make things understandable for the majority of the class. With that being said, office hours were a great, a very hands on type of professor, he made it a point that you understood the concept before leaving his office. Take all the extra credit opportunities that are offered, the practice exams are crucial!
He is so funny and really wants to know you and help you. It would be very hard to fail his class if you utilized all the resources he gives you.
Shui is one of the best professors here at KU. He genuinely cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He is always available outside of class and its almost impossible to fail his class unless you really don't care. I got solid B's and C's on exams and ended with an A in the class because of extra credit. He offers a TON of extra credit.
Shuai is the best professor I have had while at KU. He genuinely cares and he will do anything he can to help you understand the information. He offers a ton of office hours and so much extra credit. Just try in this class and you will get a good grade.
Shuai is a fantastic individual and an even better teacher. He truly cares about his students and not only want them to get an a but also wants them to fully understand the material. He hands out extra credit like candy and the tests are fair to boot. Office hours are great. A glowing review of this angel of a chem professor isn't enough.
Shuai is great. He's really nice and all his students love him. Don't be deceived by a low score on this because he deserves well into the 4 point range. If you're in his class, stay in it. If you're in a different chem class try your hardest to get into his class.
GIVE THIS MAN A RAISE! Dr. Sun was hands-down the best professor I had this semester. He loves it when students go ask him questions and he's super helpful. His lectures are pretty fun (as far as lectures go). There's a decent amount of homework, but if you do it you'll be in good standing for the tests (which were all MC or TF by the way). :)
The best class for those of us that work hard and are dedicated but bad test takers. If you just do all the homeworks and extra credit opportunities you can get an A. His lectures are fun and he is a very nice and entertaining guy. He really wants to see students learn, always available for help.
Never had more caring teacher than dr shuai . Best teacher in ku. I really recommend taking a class with him. H egices a lot of extra credit and motivates you to do better in class and makes you live chemistry even if you hate it.
I loved chem 130 with shaui! He is so sweet and cares so much about you. If you go into office hours, he is willing to sit down and figure out what you are struggling with. I was convinced that I would end his class with a B until he added extra credit. The extra credit boosted my grade up to an A!
He is super nice, and really wants you to succeed. I did well on lecture grade, homework, and lab, however, got a D and a C on some of the tests. Still ended with an A because of the extra credit. If you study and complete all of the easy work an A or B is possible.
Shuai makes chemistry easy. Show up to class, go in his office, do the practice exams and homework, get B's on the tests and you'll be fine. All lectures are posted online. Also gives like 30 extra credit points at the end of the semester. Super good dude.
Hes honestly amazing and one of the best profs Ive ever had. He gives so much extra credit at the end its crazy. He really wants you to succeed.
Shuai is hands down the best general chem professor you could ask for. He is very clear with his expectations and will help every last student in the class. Literally answers your emails in 60 seconds and gives a crazy amount of extra credit at the end of the semester. Dont waste time reading the textbook. He gives you plenty of study materials
Professor Shuai is probably my favorite professor at KU. I took CHEM130 and CHEM135 with him. He has great slides, teaches clearly, provides extra credit and practice exams, and is overall a great instructor. He really cares about his students. The content and tests can be difficult, but he provides everything you need to be successful. 10/10.
Prof Sun truly wants his students to succeed. Not only is he a great professor, he has a great sense of humor and made the class interesting. He also gives a ton of extra credit. I had a friend in the class who failed almost every test but still came out with a B in the class. Definitely the best chemistry teacher at KU, he is known for it!
I had Shuai for CHEM 130 and 135. He is the better of the Gen Chem professors by far. He genuinely wants you to succeed--there are tons of opportunities for extra credit, and he WANTS you to COME INTO OFFICE HOURS. The lectures are very well structured. Part of your grade is clicker points, so you should go to as many as you can.
I am now a pre med junior and having him as my first chemistry professor was amazing. He really cares about everyone and wants them to continue on the pre med path. Gives SO much extra credit to where if you put in effort you will get an A in both chem 130 and 135. Labs are dull but you get out early! Definitely take him for gen chem.
One of the best professors I have had so far. The lecture go fast and he covers about 5 sections a day so attendance is important. Also clicker points are super important and easy to get. I failed almost every test and still got a B from all the extra given.
Dr. Sun is a very kind first-year professor, and he really cares about the well-being of his students. The course within itself isn't easy, but he provides the tools necessary to succeed.
AMAZING professor. He knows how hard chemistry can be and he really tries his best to make everyone understand it. He offers sooo many resources so USE them. I've never had a prof have as many office hours as him and it genuinely makes him happy when you come. So much extra credit but you do have to work for it. Go to lecture and do the HW!!
The information comes at a very fast pace and you are expected to learn it from the textbook before the lecture. There is online homework every class. The professor is so kind and genuinely cares about all of his students inside and outside of class. He does everything he can to make sure each student really understands the material. Really funny.
Shuai is THE BEST professor I've ever had. He really cared about his students, and it was obvious. Very funny and personable, he made chemistry fun. I actually looked forward to class every day. It's hard to put into words how amazing of a professor he is. I regret not taking CHEM130 from him.
Shuai Sun wants his students to fail and does not care about them as a person. His tests are nothing like anything you ever do in class. He pretends like he cares about his students until he decides that it's okay to give a 5 question exam worth 120 points. He is one of the worst professors KU has to offer. Good luck getting into med school.
Lots of extra credit. I don't even like chemistry but shuai is such an awesome human I didn't even mind his class. Best professor you will ever get. Always has his door open for students and is very understanding. His tests are difficult but he helps a lot with preparing for them. 10/10 human
One of the greatest professors I have ever had in my life. He is so loving, caring, and respectful to all his students. His lectures/powerpoints are very long but they are well-organized and easy to understand/read. With all the EC he gives I don't see how you cannot get a B or even an A. He's very accessible outside of lecture, so don't hesitate.
He was such a good professor! His lectures were fast paced, but he's almost always in his office hours and would love to help you with anything. VERY caring, helpful, and kind! You can tell how much he cares about his students and chemistry in general. There is a lot of EC given at the end of the semester, so no need to panic about not getting an A
Though the class material itself isnt exactly easy, Shuai makes sure to give all of his students a chance to excel with tons of open office hours and a very approachable personality when expressing the opportunities for any help or extra credit for the class.
Hands down the greatest professor at the University of Kansas. Very passionate in teaching and in the subject of Chemistry as well. Attend his office hours as much as you can because you will learn the most there. Study a lot for the course and do lots of practice problems before showing up for the exam.
Very very hard tests but very understanding and wants you to succeed.
Dr. Sun is a FANTASTIC professor to take introductory chemistry courses with. He cares like no other, and you will find yourself laughing constantly at lecture. He wants to work with you and get to know you. Reach out! He even offers extra credit if he remembers your name by the end of the semester.
Truly one of the most caring professors. It almost feels like he's too nice at times! Tests are no joke, but in chemistry they never are. He gives you the tools to pass, such as his well-organized lecture slides, homework questions, etc. Take time to actually study, don't put it off, and you'll do fine. He wants everyone to pass and it shows!
Shaui is a nice guy, and easy to contact, but his class was hard. I met with him after the first exam (class average of a 55% percent... was 'curved' later tho). He informed me that the practice exams wouldn't benefit me for studying for the exam. He was frustrating to have as a professor, but very caring nonetheless. Definitely don't fall behind.
Professor Sun's class is HARD. It's much harder than the other CHEM130 classes but I would take it again any day. He's an amazing teacher and wants his students to do well. His exams are extremely hard but he's generous with extra credit. You definitely have to earn an A but it teaches you really good study habits. I definitely recommend Dr. Sun.
Shuai is SUCH a nice guy and truly wants you to pass with a high grade. He understands a majority of his students are pre-med and the pressure of wanting to receive an A in chem. You have unlimited tries on the HW to get 100% and doesn't have quizzes. 3 test and then a cumulative final. His test are insanely hard but gives so much EC to balance it
He is AMAZING, better than any other chem teacher you will have. Try to have a personal relationship w/him by going to office hours, he'll help you with other classes, career opportunities and life advice. His teaching style is v easy to understand, you just need to put in bare effort. He cares a lot about his students and prepare u well for ochem.
Hard tests but wants students to succeed. Will work out something to make harder tests more fair.
Very difficult class for me. Learned a lot. Very difficult tests but lots of extra credit available.
The material in this class was extremely hard and I felt like Shaui was great at trying to make the material learnable. He was super flexible and nice. His explanations always made sense and I felt like his notes helped me study for the test. This class is very hard and confusing but I think Shuai has the students best interest at heart.
Office hours everyday which are very helpful.
gives awesome extra credit. Really cares about you. the exams are hard but he gives you all the materials you need to succeed.
Fast-paced lectures, but lots of opportunities to practice the concepts discussed in the lectures. Provides notes ahead of time, so you're not completely blindsided. Loves when students come to office hours, amazing TAs.
Great guy, above average difficulty
Shuai is probably the best prof to take for chem, his class is a little harder because of the exams and homework, but he gives you everything you need to succeed and gives a ton of extra credit at the end of the semester. If you don't put in the work you probably won't get a good grade.
Shuai is one of the best people that I have ever met. He genuinely cares and wants his students to succeed. And he makes that doable as long as you put in the work too.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. I hate chemistry, but he made me want to go to class. He's helpful any time and answers emails quickly. My only issue with the class is the difficulty of the tests. I had an A average in everything except for tests, which I failed most of. Just make sure to not put off studying and you'll be fine though.
Dr. Sun was one of my favorite professors this semester. He finds a way to make Chemistry lectures fun and exciting. The lab is helpful sometimes and TAs are always available. He gives practice exams and the solutions for every exam he does. Solid professor for it being his first year teaching the course.
Professor Sun was one of the best professors I've had. The course was pretty challenging, but he was very good at explaining things, and if you didn't understand he was very accessible during his office hours for more one-on-one help.
Very enthusiastic lectures and values participation heavily. A majority of the classes points come from tests and in-class participation with iClicker questions. Always is available for office hours, class has a lot of homework compared to other classes as well as required readings. Great teacher and super approachable. He also loves Disney.
I took this class as a visiting student. Shuai has the students best interest at heart. He offered extra points on the exam so you could get some questions wrong while still achieving a 100%. I recommend going to office hours when you can. On the last day of class Shuai gave me a hug and wished me the best of luck at my home school.
Prof Sun (Shuai) is amazing. He is letting me do an incomplete until I can finish exams due to medical issues both semesters. He truely cares about your undertsanding in the class and provides extra credit and office hour opportunities. He's extremely nice and caring. He is also really funny. Definitely recommend Shuai!
Fantastic professor especially given how many students he has. If you go to office hours he will make sure you leave understanding whatever you ask. His lectures are amazing despite having so many students.
I think Shuai just wasn't a professor that worked for me, especially with the class online. If you're someone who struggles with science courses in general, he's not the professor for you. He does care and is very knowledgeable, but I just could not keep up or follow along with his class.
wont lie Professor Shuai's class was hard but definitely manageable. Lectures are great, would say his exams arnt really like what you work in the lecture and exam averages were really low (like 40%) but you can still easily pass. He offers lots of EC and its VERY accessible out side of class. You can tell he loves to teach and genuinely cares.
Professor Shuai is a professor who will always take time to help you understand things outside of class. He is very caring of students and wants you to succeed but his exams are very difficult. They are usually not anything like what you went over in lecture or on reviews. A hard class with a lot of work but you will pass with lots of effort
So I took this class after a semester of gen chem 1, the exams are extremely hard and he does give you study materials but it's WAY too much and hard to hone in on exactly what you need to study. I am usually great with chemistry but I had to drop due to not having 8+ hours a day to study for each exam and do the post test analysis.
Very funny and is invested in students learning.
Has good intentions but fails to successfully teach the concepts. Assumes what is common sense to him is common sense to students. assigns homework due in class the day he is giving the lecture over what the homework is about. Which is kind of reversed, considering you should go into class, learn the concept, and then do homework over the concept.
Chem 150. Definitely a tough class (took last year), but one of the more clearly-spoken lecture profs I've had. Friendly.
Teaches material really well and is always available to help if needed. Tried to make sure everyone learns material before moving on
Shuai is a nice guy, and does care about your success in the class. However, he believes what is common sense to him is automatically common sense to the students, which isn't too helpful, especially if you struggle with chem. Lectures are fast paced, so come to class prepared beforehand. Also, iClicker is a HUGE part of the class. Good luck.
Shuai is such a nice guy and a really good professor as well. He teaches in a way that helps you actually understand the topics, and gives lots of examples to practice. He makes an effort to learn everybody's names in his 150+ people lectures. He is always available for office hours, and will talk with you about anything. He is an amazing professor
Dr. Sun is a professor that truly cares about his students. His grading can be considered to be on the harder end of the spectrum, but he is there to make sure everyone succeeds. As long as you show up for class and go to office hours when needing help, there is no doubt that you will get a grade you want in the class.
Dr. Sun is a great person that cares about students/makes an effort to build relationships. This semester his grading system was primarily effort based. Office hours/assignments were required, class is fast paced, but assignments were for completion. We could retake his tests. His teaching/grading style might not be for everyone, but he's great.
great, personable teacher that actually tries to be friends with his students. lectures are helpful but mandatory since he uses iclicker and posts questions in class. grading criteria is confusing since there are so many factors that go into getting an A. don't go to office hours? automatic C. other than that, he makes the class very doable.
One of my favorite professors this semester. He is caring towards his students and willing to accommodate, he knows students by their first names in the 200+ lecture halls. Lectures are informative and enjoyable, but attendance and clicker are mandatory to get a good grade. Just follow what he tells you to do and you will have no trouble.
I had always heard chem was one of the hardest classes you would take in college, but I feel like Shuai showed me what chemistry could be. Don't get me wrong, you're going to have to work hard and study, but he is so understanding and one of the most genuine people you will ever meet. The grading system is strange but makes sense in the end.
Professor Shuai was the best professor I have had the delight of having in any course in my academic career. His dedication to the student is clear and he will go the extra mile to help you.Attendance is paramount and the content is intense but very doable. The exam content is difficult but he offers the chance to retake unit exams.Overall 10/10.
Shuai is a fantastic professor. Super caring and compassionate about his students. The lectures are jam packed so come into class paying attention and ready to take good notes- IMO, good notes are the key to success in this class.
Dr. Sun is a great chemistry professor. If you are a disabled student, I highly recommend that you take his Chem170 course over a Chem130 course, even though it is more difficult as he is extremely understanding. His unique grading system prioritizes learning and flexibility over rushing for the A.
THE BEST PROFESSOR AT KU. He made this class easier this last semester as well so it's a joke. You should be able to get an A very easily. Get to know the man he is cool and will give extra credit if he knows your name. TAKE HIM!
Shuai is such a fun professor, and he makes chemistry learning really engaging! It took me a while to get used to his unique teaching style & grading system, but when I look back, I learned so much more. He strongly encourages participation, so get ready to discuss! Make sure to attend his office hours, even if you don't have a question.
Best professor out there
I hated chemistry, there was not a single thing about it that made sense to me ever. Ive taken shuai for three semesters now, and every time its one of my favorite classes. shuai's effort to connect with their students shows they care.even though there is a lot of homework and the exams are hard; I really recommend taking shuai if you can.
Shuai gives excellent lectures and provides plenty of resources to help on all the exams. He also allows exams to be retaken once and is very understanding when it comes to turning in late homework assignments.
One of the few professors that can make something as boring or terrible as Intro to Chemistry actually fun. His tests are incredibly hard, but is generous with his curves. He is fun and cares about his students. Would definitely recommend taking him if you need to take a chemistry course.
Shuai is by far the best teacher at KU. He gives very clear and easily understandable exams. Exams are exactly like the practice exams just with different numbers. He gives a half sheet of paper for each exam which allows students to write needed equations and other material on it to help with your exam. Definitely recommend him for chem 130 & 135.
Shuai is by far the best teacher at KU. He gives very clear and easily understandable exams. Also allows retakes on every exam. Definitely recommend him for chem 130 & 135.
TAKE CHEM WITH SHUAI, you will not regret it. His class is very easy to get an A in. Class is set up so you only have to get an 85% on Tests to receive an A, so long as you do homework and participate. Go to office hours, he enjoys receiving feedback from his students. If you miss homework they will reopen it for you with no late penalty.
Great lecturer, makes chemistry not so bad.
Professor sun provides you with lots of material and practice to make sure you are understanding the topic you are learning. In class, he breaks down subjects so that they are easy to understand. Also in class, he promotes participating and talking with your group members. He also allows retakes on exams which is very helpful.
The best professor I have ever had. I still visit his office hour even though I am not taking his class anymore. He welcome everybody. He love talking to people during office hour, so if you attend his office hour during his course, he'll love you for life.
hard class, amazing teacher
Shuai is the best professor I've had. He makes lecture entertaining and genuinely wants you to succeed in his class. He changed the grading system so the majority of students would do good. Although the class is somewhat tough he makes it worthwhile.
Through the semester Shuai proved numerous times how he cares about his students. He is always hosting office hours, engaging and listening to students about work load problems or any problem and making adjustments to fix it. During office hours Shuai is one of the most kind and helpful professors I have ever met, any student is lucky to have him.
Shuai is amazing! He truly cares if you understand the class content. Go to his office hours! He hosts office hours 2-3 times every day, so there's no excuse not to go (go to get help or just to socialize). He allows a cheat sheet for tests (you can write any notes/equations) and allows test retakes. An A in his class is very achievable.
Dr. Shuai was one of the most entertaining professors I have ever encountered. While chemistry isn't the most thrilling subject to most people, Shuai does his absolute best to keep his lectures engaging and interactive. The material can be quite difficult at times but his accessibility outside of lecture is incredible.
Shuai is fantastic, I am so sad I only get this class with him. He genuinely cares, and while there is a lot of homework, he reopens assignments periodically and allows you to retake all exams. He even created a retake of the final. Best professor ever, I will miss this class.
If you're taking any General Chemistry classes (specifically CHEM 130, 150, 170, and 135) PLEASE do yourself a favor and have Dr. Shuai as your professor! I had him as a professor for CHEM 170 my very first semester of my Freshman year and he was hands-down one of my favorite professors I had. He is so kind and hilarious as well!
Shuai's office hours were very long so it was easy to get help from him. I think he was funny and he was a very nice person. He ended up making our final not cumulative, and he gives multiple retake opportunities and extra credit for attending his office hours. He was not very organized though and jumped from topic to topic randomly which was bad.
Amazing professor and an amazing person. Class is difficult because of the content. Quite a bit of homework but it does help with understanding. Uses IClicker. If you go to his office hours you will get a LOT of help and get to know him more.
Dr. Sun is the best professor I have had. He is super entertaining and makes chemistry fun. Attendance is mandatory and there are clicker questions in class so you have to be there, but even if attendance was optional I would have still gone because the lectures are genuinely entertaining and helpful. He also has office hours for hours per day.
Prof sun cares a lot for his students (and chemistry) and gives so many resources to make sure you succeed. His grading system was intimidating at first, but it really is made to ensure that those who work hard succeed. He was always open to feedback and took time to remember each student in his 100+ student classes. Could not recommend him enough!
He is an amazing professor who cares about his students and wants them to succeed. His class is set up so you have multiple chances to do well and he has office hours ALL THE TIME. The course material is difficult but he will help you if you need it. His lectures are very engaging and cover a lot of material.
Not much need be said. Dr. Shaui is a great professor and if you're taking CHEM 170 with him, you'll have a good time. Lots and lots of opportunities to get the grade you want. It's apparent he cares about the students' learning.
He was very fair and let you retake the exams. There is quite a bit of homework outside of class which is about 3 times a week.
Dr. Shuai is a goated professor and one of the best ones I have had so far. He has office hours every day which makes it easy to meet him outside of the class if you have concerns. He is also giving you multiple opportunities for retakes and the class is designed for students to succeed.
Shuai is amazing. I would definitely take him again. He gives amazing opportunity and he will definitely give you many chances to pass the exams and class.
This is a good course to take if you want to take chemistry and want a teacher that'll help you without fear of asking. I personally feel like it is easy to get a B/A, because of the retakes, extra credit, and in class participation. As long as you come to class, finish assignments, this class shouldn't be too stressful. HE is very funny!
This class was a fun one. It was a little fast paced, but I was still able to learn the material well. He has office hours almost daily so it is extremely easy to get help from him whenever needed. There is a pretty good amount of assignments, but many of them are extra credit/ help a lot with understanding, so there is often reason to do them.
Professor Sun was amazing due to how he was able to engage with his classes. All of his lectures involved some kind of personal activity that made it feel a bit more hands on. He also deeply cares about all of his students when it comes to their mental health and ability to succeed in his course. I would not hesitate to take his class again!
The Best Prof you will ever have for a required class, makes chem fun!!!
Shuai is a fantastic professor who genuinely cares about his students' success. His engaging lectures and open-door office hours make the challenging material manageable. I found Unstuckstudy super helpful for study prep too.
He is the goofiest little ball of joy at KU. He really wants students to learn the material and you can tell he really cares about you. He does move quite quickly though. He lets you bring a 'cheat sheet' to every exam, has 2 retakes on every test, and offers 2 grading styles to get you the most points. Bro really wants you to succeed.
Chem 150 was so easy, definitely take this class. You get to retake tests, you can only fail if you don't pay attention. Easiest class ever. Make sure you get Shuai
He was very funny and very knowledgeable in the subject. He required you to attend 2 office hours every month (which wasn't bad). It wasn't a hard class as long as you stayed on top of it.
I took general chem 1 and 2 with him last year and now am taking organic chemistry. I felt like he really prepared me to do well in organic chemistry. I also appreciated the ability to take the exams twice and how he was always available to help with questions on the homework. However, the homework modules did take me hours to do and were difficult
His class prepared me heavily for organic chemistry and ended both with an A. He holds office hours OFTEN and making it a priority to go will make this class a piece of cake. Retakes for tests if needed but they are slightly more difficult than you would assume. Pay attention in lecture, the clickers style questions appear on exams.
Sun is upbeat and passionate but does not teach the coursework in depth and this will not prepare you for chem in the future. Lectures are required and rarely helpful, but he offers a lot of opportunities for extra points. I would assume this is because students will need it most of the time.
Really funny, enthusiastic, and caring. Clearly explains content during lectures and is easily available for office hours. GO TO EXAM REVIEW SESSIONS. The TAs basically tell you what is covered on the exams. I rarely paid attention in class and still got an A. Retakes are also available and are usually identical to original exams.
Shuai is an amazing teacher. Easily super charming in lectures and his office hours are super useful is you are confused. You get extra credit for just showing up to his office hours and just creates a positive environment to learn. Super chill and likeable.
He made me love chemistry and he explains so well and hes funny
I love Shuai as a person (like LOVE him), and his office hours are very helpful and comfortable. However, his class structure made no sense to me. Most days, it felt like we were just wasting time with iClickers that didn't make sense. The class also felt very rushed close to exams, and I found myself having to teach myself everything at home.
Let me start off by saying I like him as a person. He's a really good guy. But his class is not as fun as he is. There's so much content and the material on the exams are a foreign language to what he goes over in lecture. If you want to be successful you need to memorize almost everything on his lecture slides which are usually 300 pages.
He is very funny during his lectures and his worksheets are very useful in preparing for the test, he also holds office hours every weekday where you can get extra credit for showing up. The class is very easy, but thats not a bad thing.
While his lectures were hard to follow at times, and I didn't work great with his fast paced style of teaching, any gaps I had in lectures could be filled in office hours. Shuai made himself readily available outside of class, and he was always very helpful at providing clarity during office hours. He also provided plenty of helpful extra credit.
His personality is great and he enjoys teaching chemistry although his lectures may be hard to follow at times. With that said, he has amazing office hours and will enthusiastically explain anything that you didn't understand from lectures. He's well liked for good reason.
Can redo the tests. Very interactive and go to his office hours for extra credit and lots of help on the homework. The redo test are just like the original test so you should get a good grade on the tests.
Gives great feedback and advice about anything you want to talk about. Very funny and personable and also very helpful with understanding the class especially at office hours.
He is the greatest proffesor to ever do it. I met my wife in his class actually. He makes sure to get to know every student personally if you allow him too. He tries to make sure every student understands the material. He cares more about you learning than jus tests in grades.
Shuai Sun is the best professor that the University of Kansas has to offer. He is incredibly funny and clearly cares for individual student success. His office hours are almost every day for 2-4 hours, and you get extra credit each time you attend. Lectures are very engaging, and cheat sheets are allowed on exams. I 100% recommend taking his class.
The most unique person in the state of Kansas. He is the nicest professor at KU and will do anything to make sure you understand the material and he WANTS you to get an A. He notices extra effort as well and is super easy to talk to. Loved him and his class.
The goat, impossible to get less than a B in chem 150
love you shuai, you have such a great personality. the class was overall a good experience, just wish AI didn't grade everything
Very chill professor and seems like he actually cares about if his students are learning or not. You make extra credit by going to office hours. The only issue is that he has AI grade homework, but he will help you out if it's a concern.
His lectures sometimes feel like they're only there for IClicker questions and practice problems, but his office hours very nicely make up for them.
He was an amazing teacher. He cares about you and make sure you go to his office hours to just chat.
Super fun teacher. Loves to make jokes during the lecture to keep it engaging. The material does move slowly so that people can have time to practice concepts, so if you pick up things quickly, you might get a little bored.
