“She also loves Madonna”
VM200 - 4.0 rating“i love shujen, she's funny + made the course interesting as most dread taking vm200, she gives you her notes for the course + her video examples were usually relevant + good, graded by 2 papers + 2 exams, participation + attendance does count but if you email her your notes/examples she counts it, plus i took this @ 8AM and i still survived”

Awesome teacher, very helpful, fun and enthusiastic...highly recommend..
class was hard and tedious.shujen is very sweet, but is all this analysis really necessary?spent a lot of time on feminism.talked about how the little mermaid was degrading to women and ruined one of my favorite movies.a lot of paper writing.
this class is alittle, eh...
never even took this class...but she took them to see puppetry of the **** one night...
She is fun, insightful, analytical and comprehensive. She shows good movies and documentaries. She can be a bit hard.
Shujen is a great teacher for people who are really eager to gain a deeper understanding of film. She chooses a few select topics and teaches them very well.
excellent!
FABULOUS OVERALL!
She is the ideal teacher. Very intelligent, funny, extremely laid back. She is open, honest and thorough. Could not ask for a better teacher!!
Very nice, cool, and fun. Sidenote: crazy feminist who loves Madonna.
i think a lot of complaints about her media crit class can be blamed on the material, not her! she's a million times clearer than the book.....
IN305 is Masculinities, which is incredible anyway. You watch films primarily, and Shujen has media crit background, so she's qualified. Her choices of films are wonderful, and she's a really fair grader.
she's awesome
¡¡shujen wang!! wow. what a babe. a marvelous professor with the wit and cynicism of a biting tiger. <333 her!!!!
Amazing professor, very challenging, she's intelligent and HOT. I learned a lot about Media Theory and how to criticize films properly, and you get to choose any film you want for your papers (which become fun if you get deep in them).
she's great, this is my second class with her, i'd take another one too, if she taught it
very smart, cute, and fair. is extremely well versed in the material she is actually teaching, which is refreshing.
Helpful and fair. The material is incredibly interesting and she absolutely knows what she is doing. She's brilliant and sarcastic. Great teacher and he is absolutely beautiful. Amazing fashion sense.
she was sooo awesome!!
Are her tests easy? She is really nice :)
Wonderful teacher. She's very nice, which encourages students to speak up more in class. Very fair and is great at lecturing without allowing the topic to get excruciatingly boring. I started off fearing this class, now it's my favorite one!
excellent professor. knowledgable in her field, encourages discussion and very respectful towards her students. very laid back as well. for this pre-req, she's the one to go for.
Annoying airhead. I seriously don't know why her rating is so high. Yeah, I guess she knows her material, but she doesn't explain it well. Has an unhealthy obsession with Madonna, and everyone in the class really disliked her. AVOID!
Shujen is a nice person, and shes smart, but unfortunetly she thought the class was gender studies. If you want to find a way to take a gender class instead of media theory and criticism, take it with Shujen.
I loved Shujen- so enthusiastic, thoughtful, witty, quirky, and generally fun to be around. But the class lectures were sometimes boring and she didn't always seem to know how to explain things, so she often defaulted to "just read the readings," which was kind of annoying. Could've been better.
The final is open note. I love Shujen Wang. I'm an idiot and I'll probably get an A.
Quarky, funny, A little hard to understand at first but trust me, once you get into it you find that Shujan is Brilliant. She's incredibly nice too and always trys to spark class discussion. I've learned a great deal from her. An class viewings: Easy Rider and Ghost in the Shell, need i say more
Really good movies. Interesting, although hard reading material. She's awesome.
She was alright but she kept trying to get people to go into studies instead of production...I didn't like that for some reason. Oh yeah, waaaay too much Madonna
Great class. She really made it interesting to study things like semiotics, paradigms, etc. She's one of the best teachers around.
shujen is awesome! yes, she can act like a ditz, but don't let that put you off..she's got such a wealth of information. very well-read, and she brings in lots of really interesting movies i'd never heard of. she's good at rewording theory so that we can better understand and interpret it, and she holds great class discussions. this was a fun class
Extremely difficult to understand, and very unintelligent. I found that she would go on tangents very often about uninteresting things that had to relevance to the class. Moderately easy grader though, I felt that all of my time in her class was wasteful.
Very good professor; open minded and intelligent. If you're weird, cynical, analytical, or find other teachers dismissive if your ideas, take her class.
She's fabulous! The best prof I've had at Emerson!
she is awesome!!
Very cool. Take her in the summer tho if u can. You write one measely paper and take two tests that are only 4 questions. Study a little bit for the tests at least. She also let's out super early and fills half the class with some good videos. But if you are going into the movie critiquing business then learn a lot more and take during the year
She's a wonderful professor and a just an all around nice person. I found that at times the subject matter was quite challenging to grasp, but if you made an effort to repeat the info she teaches on tests and papers, she was usually pretty lenient grading wise. She showed a lot of good media examples. She also loves Madonna... a lot.
Took her over the summer - and you should too! She boiled everything down and was easy to understand. Super helpful and showed awesome movies. Paper was pretty easy too. Great class and a great professor!
Transnational Asian Cinemas is a fascinating class! Shujen shows interesting movies, and she gives you leeway with the term paper as long as you follow certain guidelines. Her response papers are straightforward, and she's a fair grader. Shujen is hilarious, and I highly recommend her.
Shujen is a great lady with a great heart. She's smart and funny, but the language barrier can be a really big problem. Often times she is very hard to understand, especially with the complex subjects the class calls for. You often have to really re-read the textbook chapters and her notes to really grasp concepts.
Fabulous teacher! The best I've had at Emerson so far. She really cares about the material and will go over things multiple times to make sure you understand it. Fair grader too. The material isn't super easy by any means but Shujen makes it interesting and fun. Some of her examples are a bit dated but it's totally fine. Love her.
She's amazing! So passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. It is apparent that she loves the subject and loves her students. She's funny and stylish!
Shujen is absolutely the best! She's so open-minded and fun and wonderful. Yes the class is challenging and tough, but she cares so much about the students that spending time on this course if actually fun! I love her funky and cool style, too!
She's amazing - -the best I've had at Emerson. Very inspiring. Made me rethinking globalization and films.
I love Shujen. She's devoted, organized. Her classes were hard but worth the effort. We are so lucky to have her!
Shujen! I love Shujen and I miss her class! She is definitely my favorite professor at Emerson! I am so sad she's not teaching this semester. I miss her. Her class was very challenging but worth all the effort. Her class was very theoretical, but she helped us understand the difficult concepts by showing us very relevant media examples!
Shujen is funny and so approachable. You can tell she really cares for her students. It was a blast taking her Transnational Cinemas class last semester. It was very very theoretical, but she made all the concepts relevant. Great selection of films with depth! Love her!
OBSESSED with Shujen. Shes so sweet and really cares about her students and the subject matter. Media Crit was hard in the beginning but she really made the class enjoyable and interesting despite the fact the subject matter can be dense. Take her class!
I'm in the course right now and it's been incredible! She's fabulous! The best professor I've had at Emerson, hands down!
Shujen is seriously hilarious, mostly because she doesn't know it. The class pretty boring and difficult subject-wise, but she's so nuts that it's worth it. Also the subject matter is actually pretty interesting if you pay attention.
Shujen is enthusiastic and passionate. She helps me look at things through a brand new critical lens.
Don't need to worry about her accent. She explains herself really well. Really easy to talk to. She cares about her students, and you can definitely be friends with her. Her quizzes and exams are not that hard. Once you understand the theories and do the readings, you will do just fine. She is a generous grader.
Shujen is the best media criticism & theory teacher at Emerson by far. If you can't get into her class, know that you're missing out, as it's by the far the easiest and most interesting presentation of this material. She is a stellar teacher and sometimes when I'm alone at night I wish I was still in her class.
I went in to the class with no knowledge of Asian films or issues of globalization, I came our with a profound understanding of issues of identities, the nation and globalization. Really wonderful combination of theoretical readings and relevant screenings. Very timely subject given the current world situation. Shujen is also funny and stylish.
This is one of the best classes I've taken at Emerson. VM200 has a bad reputation but Shujen is great. Her class is not easy. The theories can be difficult. Shujen makes these difficult theories accessible with really interesting lectures, great discussion and fab examples. I'm so sad this semester is over. I will miss her class and her energy!
Shujen is so so sweet. She's so dorky-in-love with the material that learning comes easily from her. She's not very a tough grader, but that may be due to how dense some of the readings can truly be. For a media studies class, very solid. You'll learn about unique topics, get a good grade if you put in ANY effort, and it will feel worthwhile too.
Took this class last semester and loved it! The class was not easy, and some of the readings were quite dense and theoretical. Shujen did a great job with the readings. it really helped to watch the films in the contexts of these readings. I learned so much!! I miss Shujen and her class.
I am in the class right now and am loving it!! Definitely not an easy class but oh so enjoyable!! Great films and really challenging but rewarding readings. Two thumbs up!!
Shujen is incredibly engaging! I started off the semester with a different professor, but then Shujen had to take her place, and it made a HUGE difference in my enjoyment of the class. Although sometimes I find her to not be the most clear in what she's trying to get across, but I think this class is worth it for her quirky humor.
Best professor for VM200 in Emerson. Has quirky humor and memorable stories to tell. She isn't always clear when trying to explain something, but if you just ask she'll explain it again. Study hard (she's just a bit harsh during grading) but you'll generally be fine. Love her so much, she's recognized and admirable and I would take her again.
Shujen is by far the smartest professor I have had at Emerson, and definitely one of my favorites.
If you want an easy A, Shujen is not the one. But if you really want to learn something in Emerson, she is a super inspiring professor!!! Taking her class really changes my way of observing the world. She teaches me new angles of viewing all the media works.
I learned so much in this class. Professor Wang is also very encouraging and kind. Might not be the easiest class but it was a rewarding experience.
It might be true that she knows a lot about the theories. But she is really bad at explaining academic terms and historical backgrounds. I don't know if it's because of the language barrier or her own ability. And she says things about certain places without evidence sometimes, which is kind of offensive. Anyways, the films and readings are great.
Professor Wang is wonderful. Really knowledge. Knows her stuff. Great sense of humor. Really fair and accessible.
Shujen is one of the best professors at Emerson, ever!! This class is not easy. The readings she assigned are challenging but really helpful. I love the subject matter, and her selection of films is really wonderful!! I am so happy to be in this class.
I love Shujen! This class is so enjoyable. You'll definitely have to work hard, but it's worth it. I love the structure of the class.
I took the class last semester and really loved it. Professor Wang is, hands down, one of the best professors I've had in VMA. This course changed the way I looked at the world. Fascinating course.
Took this course a couple years ago and I miss the course, and I miss Professor Wang. What a great class and Shujen is a very inspiring teacher. Caring, kind and funny.
Dr Wang is so passionate about what she teaches, her enthusiasm is contagious. I did not know that much about Asian films before, and now I am a huge fan thanks to this class.
Genuinely the best professor at this school. Diasporic cinema is a must-take- you will get exposed to so many incredible films and Shujen genuinely cares so much about her students. Email her whenever you would like, speak up in class, do not waste your time in this class because THIS is why you came to Emerson.
Shujen is an amazing professor. She makes what could be a rather boring lecture course into a very fun class. Her lectures are engaging, funny, and thoughtful. She is extraordinarily passionate which makes her students care about the material as much as she does. Take media crit with her.
Shujen Wang is a great professor! Though the class is lecture heavy she does a very good job of keeping her students entertained by discussing recent controversies (related to film) and media. She also gives examples from her personal life and experience as well which encourages participation in discussions.
Love love love! She is such a fun and interesting teacher and I have learned so many things in this class. She uses so many good examples for all the theories that really make things easier to understand. Though it is a heavy lecture class, we also have a lot of discussions and she wants to hear your thoughts, opinions, and examples. A great class!
i love shujen, she's funny + made the course interesting as most dread taking vm200, she gives you her notes for the course + her video examples were usually relevant + good, graded by 2 papers + 2 exams, participation + attendance does count but if you email her your notes/examples she counts it, plus i took this @ 8AM and i still survived
I just don't like this class, but Shujen is definitely the BEST professor for it. Had this class at 8am and it was bearable. Say something for participation every class and you're golden; if you're shy she lets you email her your comments after class. Exams were remote. All notes you'll need are given to you on a printed sheet. I find her endearing
I am so sad this semester is ending. I will miss Shujen and her class so much!! I came into the class knowing nothing about globalization or asian cinemas, but now I feel like I've learned so much!! Shujen is really passionate about the subject, and she's pretty funny!! Excellent choices of readings (can't believe I'm saying this) and films.
I took Shujen's Diasporic Cinema class, the films she assigned were great and she does awesome lectures. Honestly I feel I learned more from her lectures than the readings. She is super nice and gives great feedback. She's also very understanding with personal issues. Great professor all around!
This course is definitely not easy, but Shujen makes learning all the theories really worthwhile (and dare I say fun). My brain hurts but in an excellent way. I feel like she really sees her students and she's always very encouraging.
top ten professors of all time. shujen's lectures are always so funny, even if she isnt trying to be. the course material can be hard to grasp at first, but shujen wang explains it in a very comprehensive, easy-to-understand, and fun way with many examples. shujen wang & her class made my entire semester better. take this class with her.
Shujen is amazing! Such an engaging speaker! She truly cares about the class and her students. Diasporic Cinema was nowhere near as fun as Transnational Asian Cinemas, but I don't regret taking her two semesters in a row just because she's so fun!
As Shujen warned us at the beginning of the semester this is a sad course. It's sad for sure bc of the subject matter (about displacement) but it's great to be able to have an in depth look of the subject. Shujen is so inspiring and engaging!
This is definitely my favorite class this semester. Shujen is cool, funny and she genuinely cares about her students!! This class is not easy. The theories can be confusing, but Shujen makes it all worthwhile. She is really passionate about the material and her enthusiasm is contagious. She also has a great sense of style. :)
i have shujen's 8am section and she makes it bearable. she is super funny and her lectures are very informative. definitely take notes and pay attention because her tests can be tough, but she is very open to answering questions. participation is important and will affect your grade but she accepts emails if you dont want to speak in class!
Very touch grader with a lot of lecturing. She questions her own theory very often which is pretty confusing:”)
Make no mistake, this is not an easy class. Shujen is rigorous but very kind. We almost never have time to spare as she has so much to cover and offer in each class but she is so engaging and the material is so empowering!! Certainly don't take her class if you don't want to learn, but if you put in the work this is a most gratifying experience!!!
Wow where do I start?? I learned so much in this class. Shujen is definitely my favorite professor at Emerson. Don't take Shujen's class if you don't want to work. I have taken three classes with her. This is true to all of her classes. But all three classes are amazing. Definitely the best classes I have taken in the department.
Shujen genuinely cares about her students and she wants them to succeed. She is very passionate and her lectures are very engaging. She always reminds us to be critical, critical of the theories we are taught and critical of the media texts we watch or listen to. The class has changed the way I look at the world and I can say it has empowered me.
Shujen is without a doubt in the conversation for Greatest Professor of All Time. I was not looking forward to taking Media Criticism and Theory at all, but now I am sad that it's over. The class is a wonderful environment and she cares deeply about her students. Essays are a bit tough but if you're attentive in class you'll be fine
Really kind, but the tests are brutal and oddly formatted. She's very funny. Really hard to find a good Media & Crit Theory professor. Some of her lectures were very boring, though some were incredibly engaging! Loved the post modernism unit and in-class screenings!
I was not looking forward to taking media crit but was lucky to get into Shujen's section (she's so popular her sections and waitlists filled up right away)! She has excellent examples for the theories and she provides lecture outlines. As long as you attend her classes and pay attention in class the exams are not hard. She's funny and endearing.
Shujen is super kind but no easy A in this class. You'll have to work for it and it'll be way worth your while. I learned so much in this class!! Shujen is fun and engaging but it is a theory class certainly no filling the blank exams. All short essays you'll have to know how to analyze/critique with the theories you learn. It is college after all!
grade too hard
Shujen is definitely my favorite professor at Emerson. I took three classes with her, VM418 being the last one. I learned so much in this class. This class is really rich with a lot of depth. Not the easiest readings, but the way Shujen helped us decipher the readings was so helpful and great. I was so sad when the fall semester ended.
I have taken two classes with Shujen and she truly is great. She has an ease for breaking down complex concepts and linking them to a film. The readings can be hard but she expands on it in class in a way that I never felt behind. Take her class- there are not many good professors at Emerson- but she is a great one.
My favorite class & it was an 8 am (that is saying a lot). Shujen is awesome, so kind, & hilarious. Lectures are extremely interesting & captivating, and she made me interested in media criticism, which I hated last year. She is also such a great person & it's an inclusive environment! Participation required but she makes you want to participate!
Such a great prof. Hard subject material but she really makes it relevant to modern day/media culture unlike other profs who teach VM200. Cares a lot about students and delivers great lectures. Participate and do the readings to get the most out of the class
