Shurla Thibou is a highly knowledgable professor. She definitely knows what she's talking about and what she expects on exams and assignments. She's thorough with her class lectures, and well prepared. I thought it was also very encouraging to have guys taking the class. I'd be interested in taking a Men's Studies class-it'd bridge the gender gap.
Professor Thibou is an intelligent and very organized instructor. She is also very helpful and motivates her students to do their best. Her class can be vary easy if you are willing to put in the work, but if you are a procrastinator, then it can be slightly difficult. Her lectures are exciting and interesting. Take her class!
Highly disorganized. It appeared that she rarely prepared for lecture and there was often very little connection between the readings, the lecture, and the group projects. The content of the class was interesting and meaningful, but as a student who values organization, clarity, and objectiveness, I wouldn't really reccommend the class.
Professor Thibou's teaching style is very effective and she encourages strong discussions. The texts are very insightful; especially those on Women in Prison. I would highly recommend this professor. Very intelligent and prompt in response.
Shurla Thibou dresses cute; is always on time; has the class read fascinating articles and books. She ties in her readings with her awesome lectures. She is a fair grader and she has her students do exciting and fun projects; for example producing a documentary. I would highly recommend taking this class with her;you will learn a lot and have fun!!
She is very unorganized and talks in circles. I could have done a better job teaching the class. The readings and lectures aren't connected and the project at the end, was very unclear. I wouldn't have learned anything in the class had it not been for the presentations.
Great Prof., interesting, intelligent, informative, cute. A bit demanding but in a beneficial way.
While she introduces many introspective ideas, her inconsistency, lack of follow through on the commitments made in class, and general dichotomy of what is expected. Awesome, probably as an informative and inpassioned friend; not so captivating or fair as a prof.
Horrible. Lack of clarity, organization etc. I am not a very organized person myself, but this was RIDICULOUS!She also never got any assignments back until AFTER THE END OF THE QUARTER! I really like women's studies so this was a big dissapointment...She has her own opinions about things and isn't open to new ones...Take it from someone else!
She is great, but you have to be on the ball or you won't catch everything. She allows notes during exams, and is always willing to see students in her office. As mentioned before, she is a bit disorganized; however, this doesn't detract from the information she presents if, again, you are on the ball.
Strong Instructor. Very helpful, a little impatient but understanding. Great texts and films. Informative and intelligent
I dont know what everone is whining about how she's not so great. I loved having this class with her especially as a freshman new to school. She even let me borrow the text book for the quarter because I couldnt get it. Great Teacher, very helpful, and very understanding...
I highly recommend taking this course. Shurla is a very clear and passionate teacher. I really enjoyed this course and felt that her lectures were interesting and that her grading was fair.
I was not very fond of this professor. She changed her mind every other minute about what we were going to do. Discussions were not fun, very boring and common sense level. nothing was very challenging about the class except understanding her expectations. Easy to get a good grade in the class but frustrating.
Very intelligent. Great smile.
I love Shurla! She was a wonderful professor especially as an incoming freshman. She was clear and extremely helpful. Her lectures and videos were interesting and relevant. I would definitely recommend her for a professor!
Utterly dumb content wise. Nothing was beyond common sense and she never let us discuss the readings. Tests are open book and easy as long as you read whats required and take a few notes for reference. Attendance is required and can hurt your grade if you miss it but otherwise it an easy A.
Scatter brained and indesicive. Easy A, mandatory attendence, alot of reading, but open book tests.
Fun professor, fair grader, pretty easy class as long as you read. I liked that even though you know her stance on issues, she was always willing to play devil's advocate for the sake of learning. My only complaint is that she's scatterbrained and changes her mind about things, so sometimes I didn't understand the expectations. I recommend her!
Very nice teacher. Actually means it when she says "I don't care what your views are as long as you back them up;" will not grade you down for disagreeing with her. Keep up with the readings and be ready to write a lot: you'll do just fine.
Shurla is great, I loved this class. There's several quizzes (1 paragraph answer to a question) 3 exams (writing responses to 6 questions based on reading) and a project (paper&presentation). Very easy grader IMO, quizzes&exams are open-book ¬es. just be sure to READ what's assigned and you'll be better prepared for the exams&quizzes.
Defend your opinion, support it with evidence and read the material! It's all interesting topic material and Shurla makes class discussions fun and keeps a civil conversation among students - even when the subject matter is controversial. This class opened my eyes and made the class look at many things through a new lens. Love both class and prof!
No homework, four quizzes and two exams. For the exams, she let us take them home to do them. They're all prompts that you have to respond to but if you've done all the reading, you'll have no problem. She's an INCREDIBLY easy grader and super friendly. She is very open to others opinions and ideas.
LOVE HER CLASS. so much fun and she is so funny her assignments were difficult but do-able.
Shurla is the BEST, my absolute favorite teacher at Western. She's so sassy and funny but really easy to talk to if you need to. She makes it a goal to remember your name and make sure you'll doing well. You need to do the readings if you want to succeed but they're not hard and they're always discussed in length in class. LOVE HER.
Shurla is the best professor ever. She makes women's studies seem more interesting that it already is. You need to do the readings to succeed. She's extremely easy to talk to, almost like a friend once you get to know her. Overall, I HIGHLY recommend taking any of her classes because she is such a great professor.
Loved this class! Sometimes Shurla seemed to confuse herself and end up running the conversation around in circles. Otherwise it was a great class with awesome discussion and amazing texts! Definitely take this class!
Shurla seemed really confused most of the time while I took this class. She told me and my partner for the final that we didn't turn in our rough draft essay when we definitely had. She seemed pretty disorganized the whole quarter. This class was mostly just a hassle and a giant annoyance for me.
Shurla is the best professor I had a WWU. She is honestly such a sweetheart but also hilarious and sassy. More than that, her class material is very interesting, she leads great discussions, if you do the work you will do well, and she is just fun to be around.
Shurla is a fantastic instructor and she is hilarious.
SHE IS THE BEST. Took both her classes and even after I wasn't her student anymore, I could go to her for anything and she did everything she could to help me. I couldn't recommend her enough. She is why I stayed at Western.
I had her as a seminar leader and we really didn't do much all quarter. She typically talked about 45 out of the 50 minute class. She is really nice and kinda sassy, but overall really easy.
Whoever thought this class was easy, thanks for giving me false information. The text was written w/ such a high degree of difficulty, you must look up summaries online to understand what the authors are saying. She expects you to use a specific writing analysis style for the tests and quizzes, learn it on your own, otherwise you'll fail them.
Shurla is a wonderful teacher, but this class is useless. The seminar is meant to tie the FIG together, but you learn nothing and your grade mostly depends on attendance and a group project. I'm looking forward to taking a Women's Studies course with Shurla though!
As an A student, take it from me she is confusing, lost, and unorganized. Though she is lovely and passionate about what she does she makes NO SENSE in class. Lectures are long, she creates more confusion than clarity and answers questions with "I will bring that in Thursdays conversation" and "We will go over that at another time" but never does
Shurla has to be one of the most confusing teachers I've ever had. Her class outline is messy and makes no sense, and everyone had to continually ask her what the heck her syllabus meant. The class is meant to tie the FIG course together, but instead we rarely talk about them. If you ask for help, she gives great feedback, but she loves to talk.
As a seminar class, there is a little more work than I think there should be, but overall she has interesting topics to teach. One big group paper and presentation project at the end. She really cares about the students academically and personally. And very funny!
Shurla is really hard to follow during lectures, I spent most of the class time generally confused. You need to ask for clarity for basically every assignment. Doesn't know how to use canvas. Tries to have discussions in class but will instead talk most of the time. Easy grader.
Shurla is an amazing teacher. Her classes are long but fun and interactive. I left class everyday feeling like I actually learned something that was worth sharing with my friends and family. She made my first woman's studies class so great that I would happily take another. Go to class everyday or you'll get docked points and struggles on the final
Really confusing on final project requirements and essays. Feedback was good, but difficult to understand sometimes. Slow to post grades, but very kind and attempts to help!
Shurla is one of the best teachers I have taken. She is super helpful when you go to her office hours. She makes lectures interesting because it's really about the students and what we think and she's funny. Assignments aren't too bad, but you do need to do the readings in order to complete them. I would take her again if I could.
I personally really like Shurla. She's a good professor, who cares about subject and students. Learned a lot from this class. (I took Global Women) She's a little un-organized in lectures, but that's the only thing I didn't like, and it didn't bother me that much. Would recommend. Only a lot of work when its the end of the class.
Shurla was a hoot! She's as whole lot of fun, and you feel very connected to her if you bother to show up to lectures. She cares about your life and truly wants you to understand the material. You'll befriend your classmates. However, classes have little structure and she likes to hear herself talk. You may have to fight to speak.
Absolutely amazing and I learned so much!!
- Good at leading discussions and fostering participation - Understands that students have different things going on (i.e. depression, illness) and is willing to help get you back on track - Overall funny and cool to talk to
She was unclear the whole quarter about expectations. Didn't post grades as the quarter went on, so if I got a bad grade, I won't know until it's too late. Her canvas site was a mess, and she multiple times said that she herself didn't want to be in class either. She really does like to hear herself talk. Was excited about the class, not any more.
Last minute class change, and we got her as a teacher. I needed the class, so no real choice! Canvas site was disorganized. Ambiguous in her expectations, which made it difficult to succeed. This was a Women's Studies class, NOT English composition!!! She assigned reading materials, then read them aloud in class.
I didn't really understand the point of this class. There were little assignments and she was less of a professor and more of a mentor. It's an easy 2 credit for the FIG, don't expect too much out of it. There's reading and a paper or two but she grades easy. Lots of guest speakers and class is almost always only 15 minutes.
I took Shurla my fall quarter and her class was enjoyable for me. Sometimes you get confused at to what exactly needs to get done but she can clarify. We had 2 major discussions, 2 exams (online), and a paper. If you read what's assigned you'll be fine. Shurla really wants to help students succeed.
I love taking Shurla's class and I plan on taking it again. You need to do all the reading otherwise you will not having anything to say when it comes time to discuss. If you do not rise your hand and do not have anything to say, you won't pass.
Shurla's very nice and funny. Tries to be as clear and available as possible, but the clarity turns into complexity & assignment details can be hard to track. Class is looong and mostly discussion. Skipped lots of reading and still did well. She's kind of tough at the end of the quarter (maybe that's just externally). Oh, & 12-15 page paper sucked.
Shurla is the most compassionate professor I've ever had. I'd highly recommend taking the time to visit her in her office hours. She's very empathetic and understanding. She is my favorite professor I've ever had! I took two of her courses, Intro to Women's Studies (211) and Global Women (314). I learned a lot, class discussions were really good.
Shurla gave feedback on assignment so late that there was no way to improve the next assignment because it was already turned in. She was rude to students during presentations. She questioned me personally for faking anxiety. Her instructions for assignments were paragraphs long when they only need be a sentence. She is the worst prof I've had.
Great teacher
The class itself was very easy, I hardly ever read the textbook. Professor Thibou doesn't required participation, but often times you will find yourself participating because you want to. She draws you into the conversation very well. Her take on everything is very inspiring, and she is absolutely hilarious. I would take this class every quarter.
Shurla is the funniest professor. She's a little scattered and the class, a lot of the time, is not beneficial for learning anything. However, if you skip more than 3 times, you most likely won't get anything above a B. Very minimal work load, but for two credits, you shouldn't expect a lot anyways. I loved this class though!
Always answers questions thoroughly and tests are easy if you did the readings. No textbook required which is nice, she provides readings.
Shurla is an amazing professor who truly cares about her students. She gives assignments that relate well to what you are learning in class, and that make you think about the world around you. Make sure you go to class, she is not afraid to call you out if you are absent.
Shurla is precise about what she wants from you and makes sure you know what she expects. I thought she was a little rude at times if students didn't always agree with her. She's one of those professors who has the ability to make you feel very small if you don't approach the material how SHE wants you. Which I find ironic considering the subject.
This was my second class with Shurla, and I just absolutely love her. She has such an amazing way of relating everything back to local and relatable concepts to help students understand. The research paper helped me learn so much and really grow as an individual. I took something from every reading and every video and every lecture. AMAZING!!!!
Last quarter I took her 211 course and I fell in love with Shurla. She is extremely imitating and has high expectations, however she is the most understanding prof I have had this far. It shows through her teaching that she's passionate and educated on the course material. There are a few quizzes but take them with classmates. You will love Shurla
Inspiring, relatable, and challenging class materials- they are chosen and put together well. She gives every student the opportunity to speak their mind in class; however, I do think she can make students feel embarrassed if they say something incorrectly, and it is difficult to connect a different understanding with hers. Overall I recommend her!
I loved this class and suggest that everyone should take it. Shurla is a great professor and very funny and easy to connect with.
This class was definitely the usual for a WGSS course. Shurla is incredibly knowledgeable so if you are a WGSS minor or interested in it make sure you take the class with her. Quizzes are a little difficult so be prepared to re-read and understand the material before taking them. Discussions are easy. DO NOT wait until the last minute for research!
Online quizzes every few weeks are tough, mostly taken right out of long texts that you are expected to read. Final project was hard to complete with no partner and she graded it very harshly.
Shurla is by far my favorite professor I have had. I think everyone at Western should take at least one class from her. She respects students that work hard, and if she sees you are putting forth effort she will grade accordingly. She is incredibly inspirational, smart, and is the primary reason why I became a WGSS minor. AMAZING PROFESSOR!
Shurla is the best. I'm a psych major and she's still my favorite professor at Western. She genuinely cares about her students and will help you with anything - course related or not. If she can tell you're trying in her class, she'll reward you for it. Highly recommend.
Hard grader and unforgiving if you misunderstand her expectations. She's funny but her silly charm doesn't make up for the boring, long and scatter-brained lectures. I don't agree that she is eager to give good feedback when you need it. I am a minor in women's studies and I did NOT enjoy her. Im an A student but got a C due to poor instructions
Shurla is really funny and caring. However, her grading seems too harsh and can be very unclear with what she expects/wants. If you want to do well in her class, go to her office hours so you can get a better idea of what she is looking for. There arent any tests but there are online quizzes, and discussions and a 12 page paper. NOT AN EASY A
Shurla grades harshly, every point is 1% of your grade. It is very difficult to succeed in her class due to unclear grading criteria, a lack of communication regarding the requirements of students, and dismissive behavior to those that visit in her office. This was a very difficult class and I would not recommend her to any student.
Never answers messages/emails, and if she did answer it was after the due date of an assignment in question. Very few assignments, miss one and your grade is done for!
Shurla is a fun, spunky woman for sure! I did enjoy listening to her stories and she was very interactive with the class. However, the outline of the class is very vague, she was often not present at her office hours and shrugged it off when she was made aware of it, and returned grades so late there wasnt a way you could redeem yourself.
If you're taking a class with Shurla, my best advice is to build a relationship with her ASAP. The more she gets to know you, the more she genuinely wants to help you and see you succeed. This is my second class with her and while I didn't learn much, I had a really good time! ALWAYS ask her for feedback-- she'll be more than willing to help!
Shurla is a funny professor and the lectures/discussions were always engaging. However, her grading is harsh and difficult to understand; you're not always sure what she expects and she's not great at explaining her expectations in different ways. Grade was made up of about 8 assignments plus the final. Overall, not too bad for a GUR I guess.
Shula seems like an interesting person and even thought there isnt that much work in this class you have to spend time writing canvas discussion and on a group paper you also have to come to class and she has very strict rules when it comes to attendance and turning things in late to me it was a pain and I didn't learn much
Shurla is the actual best. She is always open to talk about anything you need, academic or otherwise. A real sweetie. She is good at leading discussion heavy classes and looks for participation.
Shurla is an amazing person, but not an amazing teacher. She focuses on discussions (every class) on the readings. Your grade is based on attendance, 3 online discussions (each is 750 words), a presentation, and a 10-12 page essay. Few assignments but tough work. Class is boring
Meh. She has a lot of specific and tedious expectations but she is very unclear about what they are. She puts way too much weight on less important homework assignments and when grading puts too much weight on arbitrary details. The class was pointless, learned nothing new. Avoid her if you can, there are better profs at Western.
Shurla is probably the best professors I have had at Western. If you do have her class I seriously recommend building a relationship with her. One of the coolest people I have ever met and genuinely cares about her students (if she can see there is effort being put into the class). I have taken two classes with her so far and I wish she taught more
I love WGSS, and I love theory. However, Shurla was one of the worst professors I've ever had. Her discussions are dreadful, grading rubrics confusing, and her attendance policy is very nonflexible.
Her grading and instructions were so confusing that I had to rewrite them to understand them. A few classmates got horribly sick and went to the ER, missing her class, and she didn't let them make up for their missing work. She's open to work with you outside of class but she lives in her own world. IDK man, take class if you have to.
I loved all three of Shurla's classes, and found them to be really enjoyable. There is no text books for her classes, but there is alot of downloadable links, and articles that are assigned. It can be a bit reading intensive at times, I found all the reading to be relevant to the topic. I reccomend building a relationship with her as a professor .
Sometimes expectations for the course were unclear, but overall I enjoyed the time I spent with Shurla.
Shurla is an amazing woman! I'm currently in her class and I love it, so far its been my favorite class at Western. Sometimes she can be unclear in directions (especially during discussions) and the whole class is 2 big online discussions, 3 online quizzes, and one final project/paper. Overall, its easy as long as you put in the effort & show her!
I've taken 2 of Shurla's class and I'm about to take my third next quarter! It's true that she can sometimes be a bit unorganized but she tries to use our time wisely. There's no exams, but a few easy reading quizzes (as long as you read) and a group project. She's the reason I'm in the WGSS minor! She's awesome!
DO NOT TAKE THIS FOR A GPA BOOST. IT IS NOT A CLASS THAT WILL HELP YOU. Shurla is overall a great person, but her class organization is the worst i've ever seen. Her overall grading is out of 100 points, and there is 0 sympathy for any late assignments. Assignments are super hard to access and are not on the home page. ALL assignments have readings
The Class itself is easy, but every time when I ask her some questions, what I ask is not what she answer. Sometimes, she give student very bad attitude.
This class confused me since the amount of course work was next to nothing. I feel like I gained nothing from this class aside from the credit and the easy A. The professor is a nice woman but wasn't very friendly or easy to communicate with effectively. This class would probably be much better in person but online it seemed pretty pointless
Prof Thibou is very disorganized and unclear in her assignment criteria and has zero forgiveness for late work, formatting errors, and missed class or even being a few minutes late to a zoom call. When my group turned in our final project, she refused to accept it due to a very small formatting error- the project was worth 45% of the grade. 0/10
Shurla provides the readings but they are super boring. There tends to be a lot to read each week but you only have 3 reading tests and 3 writing assignments. She's a really easy grader so the essays are pretty easy. There is a final group project that isn't that hard if you do the work. The class is boring but not that hard if you do the readings
Worst professor Ive had at Western. She is incredibly disorganized and does not make her expectations were unclear. There were technical difficulties with my presentation which she ended up blaming on me, and then was frustrated when I asked her to actually grade my presentation. I was able to remedy my grade, but this ruined my opinion of her.
The horrendous disorganization and lack of communication make taking her class absurdly difficult. She is unclear with what she wants out of assignments, with ultra vague instructions and grading, and has no sympathy for turning something a second later than the due date. You get nothing from this class so it's only good for the GUR
Listen to what everyone else says. She has an attitude and the class is boring. There's far better WGSS classes out there
Professor Thibou is not just the worst professor Ive had at WWU, shes the worst teacher Ive had in my life. She grades ridiculously hard but simultaneously gives no feedback whatsoever. She has an attitude that I would expect from someone I had personally wronged, not a teacher. No late work, even if youre in the hospital. Dont take it
This instructor was really stubborn to work with as they did not at all try to work with me as a student, and suggested I leave the class instead of try to work with me. I decided to leave the class and I am so glad I did. I can see from many of the reviews before me, that others have had similar issues with her.
Sheila is pretty cool, shes a tough grader though. I felt like there was a lot of homework and not a lot of room for mistakes in her class. The tests are easy because the books are online and you can just search the answers. But it definitely helps to read the book too. Shes more fun in person.
So for what is supposed to be an online class, you would think the teacher would actually have to teach rather than just providing readings and videos to watch. It was really disappointing to realize at the end of the quarter that I have no idea who my teacher is. Very hard to get ahold of and is not very understanding to the pandemic.
Probably one of the worst profs i have ever had. unreasonable and unrealistic grader. i had a friend pass away this quarter & emailed her bc i missed an assignment & she did not care. also did not care about my DAC accommodations. extremely rude. i basically taught myself the entire quarter and didnt learn anything at all. do NOT. take her class.
A Women's Studies professor with no academic background in the field whatsoever (wish I knew this before taking the class). Take if you want an easy A but not if you actually want to learn something. This class is all fluff and pretty useless.
One of the worst professors I ever had. This was the first quarter of online classes after covid started, & halfway in I broke my laptop. Libraries were closed due to covid, and I did not have money for a new laptop. When I told her this, she had an attitide and suggested I fail the class. Some of her submission comments made me cry :) very mean.
This class has like 4 discussion posts and a paper. There are no lectures or anything provided by the prof, just reading/vids and then "write an analysis". Felt like teaching myself. Also little guidance provided for the paper but very high grading standards. Instructions unclear and she's generally hard to get ahold of. Grading takes forever also.
Really disappointing. Parts of the course not updated from previous classes, not understanding of pandemic and outside of school commitments that get even harder to navigate during this time. Unclear expectations. No help whatsoever this quarter. Maybe she is better in person but I recommend you avoid her online at all costs. Many will say the same
Shurla Thibou is the WORST teacher Ive ever had; so bad that I made an account on here so I could warn people. She does NOT respect disability related accommodations, she doesnt respond to emails, she is incredibly disorganized, and her grading is unrealistic and harsh. You wont learn anything in her courses; all it will do is destroy your GPA.
Shurla was great and super accommodating. Got rid of half of our final cause we said we didnt want to do it and then we had an arts and crafts day. Very easy and enjoyed having her as a teacher
Shurla makes the class a fun discussion, and she grades very easy. While attendance is not mandatory, I think it would be hard to succeed in her class as there are discrepancies between the syllabus and what she says in person. She can be a bit confusing in expectations. I feel that I could have learned more in the class, but at least it was easy.
There are very few actually assignments, and a LOT of reading. She is there to give you a grade, and not much more. READ THE SYLLABUS there is so much in there that she'll never mention in class. You pretty much teach yourself the entire quarter and then write a paper about something you taught yourself about.
I really liked taking her class and I thought she taught in an engaging way. There were movie days and most class days were heavily discussion based. She gets a lot of hate about being a tough grader, but I honestly think its necessary for the deep topics we went over. People just had unrealistic expectations about the class.
She's awful. This is the worst class I've ever taken, she's difficult, mean, harsh and full on bullies you. Doesn't offer any sort of help and doesnt know what she's saying half the time, never responds online either. I had covid and she didn't even attempt to make accommodations the 2 weeks I was out (which is required by the school).
It is writing and lecture heavy; would not take this class unless required to do so. Oral and written communication were inconsistent. I chose to do the final research paper with a group which I do not recommend. She did not disclose that group members get individual grades until quarter's end.
Ignore the bad reviews! Shurla is wonderful. Provides insightful (free access) texts which are integrated into class discussions. She is engaging and class is discussion based. She is easy to talk to and will give detailed review of your work if you ask her for help. Grades easily if you show true effort. Intelligent and very educated.
I was honestly so excited to take this course, but I couldn't help but feeling disappointed after taking it. I liked the content of the class and found it very interesting but I feel like I didn't gain very much from this class. The assignments weren't the most insightful and the teaching was kind of choppy. She's super nice and funny though!
Awful at communicating, assignment structures made no sense, and I have never had a teacher that has talked so much and said so little. Legit learned nothing, couldn't even tell you what the point of the class was.
Shes a really great professor but reading quizzes can be unclear and shes a pretty inflexible grader. Though attendance isnt mandatory, she gives perks for those that show up to class, and she notices when people dont show up.
The class final is an essay, which she helps you write throughout the quarter. If you wanna get better at essays this is a good class for that. The textbook and all readings were free, and she goes over everything in class to help with understanding. I had fun with the essay despite the stress of it. She's kinda hard to read, but she's still nice
She's hard to read and reluctant to exhibit grace towards her students, which made it difficult to comfortably participate. Feedback tended to be overly critical, rather than constructive, and was especially notable when she nit-picked students' in-person final presentations. Her contributions were negligible as the lectures were incognizable.
easy to pass class. no book purchases, all free readings online. Syllabus criteria can look overwhelming but Shurla is pretty chill and willing to help. She likes you better if you show up and participate more. She gives detailed feedback and is overall very kind.
Lectures are really discussion based, which made them boring sometimes. There's not really a lot of assignment's, so it's important that you do well on the few assignments and the final project. She's pretty funny though and made herself really acessable.
I didn't really learn or gain anything from the lectures, which made them pretty boring, but I thought Shurla was funny so that helped. I will say that the instructions and canvas set up makes things really unclear and confusing. She also was really critical and kind of rude during my final presentation. Other than that, I enjoyed the class.
Shurla seriously needs to review the DAC guidelines and understand how to handle students with accommodations. When I went to discuss my accommodations with her because she was not respecting them, she made several passive-aggressive jokes about my disability to my face. She also refused to accommodate me when I had COVID. Unreachable by email.
The expectations for the class were not very clear. The canvas set up is confusing. Most assignments were not graded until after the class was over which was frustrating to not receive any feedback until the very end. How are we supposed to learn anything without prompt feedback?
Professor Shurla was funny, the in-class discussions were very interesting, and she always made sure you were included if you wanted to be! We had some communication issues about the final which made finals very stressful + partner lowkey ditched me. i wish the class towards the end wrapped up a bit better but a nice course. show up
great class! all we did for the most part was group discussions about interesting topics and a book report that i was very motivated to do! Professor Shurla would bring snacks, engage in a really unique discussion, and made the class fun. We even went bowling which I had a blast doing! Show up for sure, because she will remember if you don't/don't.
I loved this professor & class, everything was so clear in the syllabus but it did require organization on your part- checking canvas before classes and making sure you have time to do readings. Involved so much class participation and discussion. She gives extra credit options I would recommend doing open forums.
Lack of communication about expectations and unfair grading. She claimed my citations were wrong when they were not. She told me that a source was too old (but never specified it needed to be a certain time frame) while her sources for class were older. She made passive aggressive comments about how she thinks I did not do the readings when I did.
Professor Thibou lacks empathy for her students. I received no accommodations when I told her I had a family emergency. I had asked for an extension, but she refused and then questioned whether I put time and effort into my final paper. She will give you a bad grade if assignments are not done exactly how she wants it.
Do not take a class with this professor, she is transphobic. She is also a very tough grader and grades via vague questions and answers in her quizzes and the final project. She forced some students to teach the class some days, just because they participated in discussions, and overrules your research based on her own opinions in the final project
Honestly, I have no idea what this class was supposed to teach. The final was a book report on basically any book you wanted. She is a very sweet woman who brought us snacks and allowed us to add to the conversation. If you take this for a FIG I would recommend it, especially as a first year.
I was very excited about this subject but was a bit disappointed in how it was handled. It can be a bit disorganized at times but she gave overall good feedback.
Very unclear expectations for all her assignments, not many opportunities to make up a grade, condescending, pretends to be nice and understanding (as she preaches so much) but doesnt offer help and is just critiquing the entire time. I advise to be cautious with her class and how to approach her otherwise she will make an example out of you.
Very unclear instructions on assignments and tests. Questions were always written in a confusing and hard to understand way. Feedback is always hard to understand and inconsistent.
The class can be a mixed bag - some engaging discussions, but also unclear expectations and a tough grader. If you stay organized and use study aids like Unstuck ai, you can succeed. Just be prepared for a hands-off professor who may not always accommodate needs.
She appeared nice at first but quickly became sour. She makes no exceptions even if you're sick or have ann emergency. She gives no points back. Expectations and deadlines are unclear. We had our presentation an hour before class was over, but she wouldn't let us present. No constructive criticism. Very rude emails. Negative feedback. Save yourself
I hated this class, this teacher causes immense mental stress and anxiety AND WE DIDNT EVEN LEARN ANYTHING!! She sits in a high horse but refuses to be at all constructive. This teacher will tear you down to pieces and it's a GUR. I hate that other students are going to be subjected to this level of disrespect and cruelty. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS I BEG OF YOU!! Numerous students have had horrible experiences with her she treated everyone like a doormat!
HELL HOLE!
This teacher should be fired!!!!
She should quit because clearly she doesn't want to TEACH maybe should be on a reality show bc she loves to throw shade. This woman has no heart
Shurla was a kind and caring professor who really let her humanity show! Her WGSS 211 class consisted of 4 reading quizzes and 1 final project (research paper and presentation on a topic of your choosing). Her lectures were incredibly constructive and thorough, the readings are not hard at all and generally just really cool. Loved this class.
This was a terrible class. The syllabus was wordy and made zero sense. The class could've been like 30 minutes but instead she regurgitated readings at us for 2 hours at 8 in the morning. She did not effectively communicate expectations of her students, or give genuinely helpful feedback. I once waited 2 hours for her to even read my paper. Bad.
Not clear of expectations. Extremely difficult to work with. Does not answer students questions, just says to refer to syllabus which of full of bad grammar, so VERY hard to understand. Very rude towards students, don't recommend.
Misgendered a student the first day of class... called the student "good girl" in front of the entire class before asking anyone for their preferred pronouns. This woman is shady. She throws tantrums in class and has no respect for her students.
nonetheless!!!!!!
This is the only class I've ever had to withdraw from. Unclear grading, unorganized, and unprofessional. The grading for this class was completely subjective and not based on a rubric/ anything with structure.
every assignment was worded incredibly confusingly and when asking shrill clarifying questions she would either get upset or make the assignment more complicated. do not take shirlas class if you can help it.
She is a good teacher and the coursework is not as dense as it seems. I think that's the issue though; her assignments and instructions are INCREDIBLY wordy and confusing. A concept that could be explained in 5 words gets drawn out into an eighty minute lecture and quiz questions seem to be more meandering than they actually are.
i thought this was gonna be a fun class bur quickly realized rhe content is extremely baseline and redundant. class is honestly extremely easy but her incompetence woth responding to any email or outreach is insane considering her emphasis on helping her students. emailed my group 1 week before assignment was due telling us 4/6 sources were unusabl
Class discussions were interesting, but not much new information will be learned if you already have knowledge of sexism and transphobia in media. The class is not difficult but to minimize stress complete the final project on your own as you will be punished if your group members do not show up. She quickly becomes frustrated if you ask questions.
I really hope that she can learn from all the bad reviews on here and either choose a different profession or change her ways. She got mad at me simply for forwarding my DAC accommodations to her (as I'm required to do with every class) and never gave help when I needed it. I've never had a worse professor and am disturbed this is a GUR.
literally inaccessible and never responded to her emails. when i tried to email her she didn't respond for over a month. lectures are surface level and uninteresting and feel about as meaningful as an instagram infographic post. this girl told me her grandma died and shurla wouldn't extend the deadline for her which was crazy 😭
WGSS 212* Professor Thibou was the worst professor I've ever had at Western. Her lectures are pointless and overly drawn out. We are graded on very few things, where the criteria are unclear, and she docks points without explanation. Two full hours of her talking just to hear herself talk. Wish I had dropped this class.
Shurla was quite a professor, and personally, I did not enjoy her. On the first reading quiz, almost everyone failed because the questions were wordy, and the answers were debatable. We came to class the next week, and she came in, and refused to talk. She was snotty towards us, and said she's never had this happen before. Do not take please!
I thought she introduced a lot of important subject matter with the readings she chose but I often felt that our discussions didn't always further my understanding as most of the time we just talked about what we read rather than what it made us think about/question. I did, however, enjoy that she alloted the whole quarter to develop our essay.
