Very nice in class but an unexpectedly hard marker.
Funnest (and easist!) class ever. Provides a wide variety of media clips and offers a class that is both interactive and enlightening.
Awesome class, I would recommend taking it - it is not designed for film majors. The marking scheme is 40% midterm/45% final +5% participation for using the clicker in class. The class is enjoyable, and the tests are tough, but it is possible to do well in the course.
The class was extremely interesting. She made the class very enjoyable. The midterm was fairly easy, but the higher than average midterm meant that the final would be hard...and it was VERY hard. However, the prof is GREAT! She made me want to come to class. I strongly recommend it to anyone. It's a fun class!
I have never been so excited to attend a lecture as I have been for Professor Matrix's Film 240 class. She is extremely prepared and her lectures are brilliantly thought out. A high energy class that definitely worth taking!
She's more up to date on popular culture than I am! She makes up her own sweet terms for some things. She's very engaging, no one is ever bored.
Matrix was amazing and not to mention pretty attractive
Sidney Matrix is intelligent, helpful, attractive, interesting and very modern. All of these factors result in very engaging classes, and thought-provoking discussion.
One of the most inspirational teachers at Queen's, Sidney has helped me decide which direction I want to go in (career wise). She is the one professor most relevant to the real world at Queen's University, and I can't imagine my university experience without her.
Sidney Eve Matrix was by far the strongest professor I had at Queen's. Each lecture brought several ideas out that engaged, interested and motivated the students. Attendance in her classes was always over 80%...which I think is very rare and demonstrated the level of enjoyment people received from her classes.
To the person who said SEM is horrible, I think you are mixing her up with someone else. Prof. Matrix is the one prof I have felt comfortable going to for relevant advice & is always available to discuss w her students. The way she presents her material is clear, engaging and interesting. She makes learning fun & challenging. I highly recommend her
Sidney is one of the best profs I have ever had the pleasure of working with. In addition to being very supportive of her students, she is constantly staying up to date with best media practices. I wish all my classes could be with her!
Sidney Matrix is a brilliant and innovative professor who has a genuine passion for teaching and has been instrumental in bringing Queen's Film and Media into the 21st century.
Matrix is engaging and challenging (totally worth waking up for her 8.30s)& by no means a pushover. She knows her stuff & demands that ur able to keep up with class, meaning reading up on ur own and bringing ur share to the table. She insightfully connects academia with modern culture (ex:existentialism & facebook). She is all sorts of awesome!
Way overrated.
Half of her vocabulary is made up. She doesn't teach you things you didn't already know about Facebook and Twitter. She takes any criticism of her course personally and doesn't read your work or remember what you presented on. The class is perfect if you don't want to do anything but not if you want to learn.
Interesting subject; horrible prof!
You would be stupid not to take this class. Matrix is one of the best profs at Queen's. To show how good her lectures are: she posts videos of the lectures online and almost everybody still goes to class!
It was a great course untilll the final exam (120 m.c.) Prepare to fail the final. She just asked a bunch of random questions. Be prepared to be testing for every statistic she mentioned during her lectures. And unfortunately the final is worth 60 %
She seems like she cares about students, but when it gets down to it, she really couldn't care less. I really would never take another class with her ever again. Its not worth it- especially with the brutal 75% final exam. Don't bother putting yourself through the misery.
I found the lectures very entertaining. Film 240 with Sidney was simply an enjoyable course.
So much work! Make sure to do in advance and read the guidelines to make sure all work asked is done. Stupid stuff can bring down your mark. Make sure to study for midterm exam too, open book and google wont help you.
The final exam definitely came out of nowhere. However, lectures are fun, the course has a VERY light workload (pretty much nonexistent), and Sidneyeve is an amazing professor. The only class I would recommend taking online over in lecutre (I took it in lecture).
Great professor.
Great knowledge and very good looking.
Such a cool person! Really knowledgable and high-tech. Made course constantly interactive so three hours lectures didn't feel long. Very engaging lecturer.
Horrible. Makes up words and creates obscure final exams designed to lower your grade regardless of how much you prepare.
After completing the first multiple choice exam I wrote to her pointing out that many of the questions had answers of equal validity. She accused me of cheating and refused to address any of my concerns. After unexpectedly receiving a terrible grade on the final and asking politely for some form of feedback she, again, refused with a curt reply.
SEM gives a good lecture, but her graders are extremely inconsistent. The same project with one grader might get you anywhere from an A+ to a B. Her late policy is extremely unforgiving and she is really inaccessible. There are no chances to get feedback and don't try to discuss a mark or she'll b*tch you out.
She's an engaging lecturer, but her marking is absolutely arbitrary. Her Moodle is disorganized, with assignments in neither chronological or alphabetical order, and she gives no warnings of when an assignment is due. Her exam questions are obscure: I attended every lecture and reviewed my notes but the lecture based questions still stumped me.
I really enjoyed SEM's class. She was quick to respond to emails and put a lot of helpful resources on moodle - quizlet, podcasts, etc. She was funny and as long as you do the work on time, you can get a pretty good grade.
She is literally the most difficult prof to deal with EVER. If you are 1 minute late to submit an assignment, you get an F. She makes up terms and puts them on the exams. If you email her for help or clarification she will reply very passive aggressively and give you no help. I thought I would love the course but she made me hate it.
Terrible marker. Worst class I have ever taken.
Marking doesn't make sense and she never responds to emails. Final exam is all multiple choice based on arbitrary facts.
Sidney Eve is a fantastic professor! I took FILM260 as a web course & it was great. Projects were really interesting. Lectures were interesting. Midterm & Final exam were un-proctored online exams. The exams were tricky, even though it was open book. If you are not design savy, then 260 is not the class for you. Would take another course!
She is too strict on any accommodations, and doesnt seem to care if something comes up personally or if any students are struggling. She is very cold and is only nice in recorded lectures. The terms she creates are not more than what's applicable to her course. Huge readings, only relevant for final exam where she throws everything at us. ..
Sidney does not provide enough feedback regarding assignment and quizzes. Film 260 consisted of 2 assignments, an online midterm, an in class exam, and group discussion. I did not receive any feedback on these assessments other than a final grade. My marks were lower than anticipated and I would have enjoyed knowing why I received these marks.
If I could put zero for helpfulness, I would! Don't expect anything if you email her
Extremely unforgiving and inflexible. Her late F0 policy is brutal. As others have said, exams seem arbitrary and so specific as to be practically inapplicable outside the course - probably due in part to the fact that she pools questions from students for bonus points. Her online office hours and desire not to teach in-person was disengaging.
Great professor, who really cares about her students! Tough tests and a fair marker, not an easy A course but you learn a lot of interesting things and gain some useful online design skills!
She is extremely cold and unconcerned with student problems or questions. In tests she throws together questions that dont match what she says in lectures. She also makes up terms and puts them in exams. Even if you study and do all required readings, you wont know where a majority of the questions are coming from. Avoid her....
Honestly the course itself was great. The material was super interesting and I wish I could have had the chance to enjoy it. However, Matrix was incredibly inconsiderate, and did not take any measures to help students perform well. I emailed her on multiple occasions asking for clarification and help, and she refused. Great course, worst prof.
I understand she can be a tough prof and doesn't usually budge on course policy or marks, but I do respect that about her. She's tough and won't go easy on you, but if you can do what is expected of you and pay attention to course materials, she really isn't that bad. She's tough, but her attitude makes me respect her more, and I loved the course.
One of the worst professors that I have ever had so far in my Queen's education. She does NOT respond to any of emails, and is very unwillingly to help her students. Also she seems to enjoys failing her students. The only good thing about the prof is that her lectures are actually enjoyable and clear.
Cancelled an online exam because students couldn't log in at the start of the exam and as a result wouldn't have the full time to complete the exam o wait that's the correct thing to do.
Sidneyeve is by far one of the least accommodating professors I've encountered through my time at Queen's. Zero accountability for issues which are her fault, and could not care less about her students. Make no mistake, the online FILM courses are bird courses. Just don't mistake the requirements because she is not forgiving.
Even though she's tough and said up front late assignments receive a 0 mark, I respect her. It was an online course and I felt she at least made an effort to have a presence with weekly lectures. I found her helpful, and she gave lots of feedback. It was a lot of work for a half-credit, but I learned a lot and it was fun and interesting!
Very unaccommodating, and she knows the course is a joke so she tries to make up for it by being difficult. She also throws different terms and more complex issues into her quizzes, so even if you did all the readings and have Google at your disposal, you'll be wondering where some of the questions came from. Also very vague in her instructions.
My favourite prof -- I have taken several courses with her. She may seem like a tough grader, but she gives excellent feedback/advice if you email her, which will help you succeed with assignments. Assignments are creativity-based. They are interesting and help you learn unique skills for the real world. Overall, she is a fun and helpful prof.
I thought it necessary to share my own completely different experience - professor Matrix is actually one of the best and most progressive professors I've ever had. Her method and what is graded is forward thinking compared to most archaic PS teaching practices nowadays, and she accommodated me and gave feedback multiple times - just email her.
Ive taken two courses with SEM FILM 260 and ENIN 301 and she is a great prof! You do need to do the readings to do well on tests but they are easy reads - many just newspaper articles that are pop culture. Her assignments are genuinely interesting and valuable as well. If you ever need extra help or time just communicate with her, shes a gem !
No idea what anyone else in this thread is talking about. I've taken 3 classes with SEM and she has been nothing but 100% kind and accommodating... She only lectured once every two weeks because she knew we were busy with all of our other classes! And she would let you reschedule a quiz, all you had to do was ask. A true hero.
She da bomb
Sidney Eve was an exceptional professor. She understands that students have other courses and are busy. Her assignments are very straightforward and she marks very easily. She replies to emails extremely fast and always gives positive feedback on all work.
Very accommodating.
She is very understanding, and gives fair grades. If she sees that you are putting in effort for a specific assignment, your work will pay off. ENIN140 was very easy would take again.
Professor Matrix is easily the most caring and considerate professor I have ever had. She truly cares about her student's wellbeing and understands that sometimes life gets in the way of school. She is easily accessible, makes the course interesting, and is really just super kind. If you have the chance, definitely take one of her courses.
Although I took her course online over the summer, Professor Matrix is by far my favourite prof I've had. She is so accommodating & considerate of her students. She is easy to contact and is patient and generous too. Quizzes were open book and as long as you do the work it's an easy A! Definitely would recommend.
Loved this class with this prof! I am planning to take more courses with her asap. She uses an online booking system that made it easy to book a phone call or screen sharing calls with her to review course content and assignments. I wish all online profs used that! I also would love to see more profs use her style of video lectures. Great prof!
Prof Matrix is a real gem! She has online office hours at all hours of the day, responds to emails immediately and is the MOST accommodating prof I have ever had. She understands we have other classes, and will always grant extensions. Definitely taking another class with her!
amazing class and amazing prof
What an absolute moron. Puts the summer quiz times from 9am-5pm with zero flexibility, as if her students don't work full time jobs. Yes it's an entrepreneur course, but not all of us are successful entrepreneurs with flexible schedules just yet. Literally the most moronic thing you could do. Easy course but horribly planned out!
Awful professor. Unreachable and gives grades without feedback. Tests included questions that were not from the readings. Even after going above and beyond what was asked, she gave me a B. Then when I asked for feedback on why, she did not respond. It's almost like she just assigned random grades to each submission.
I will tell you this professor has changed dramatic personalities. She was super nice, easy going, and easy marker on assignments. But now she doesn't seem to care about her students at all, and gives random marks for assignments (and uses the same feedback / excuses for poor marks for all her ENIN courses). Worst and most dishonest professor.
She re-uses & recycles almost the same content from ENIN 140 (Design Thinking) for this course (ENIN 301). You barely learn anything in this class, and yet she marks extremely hardcore for the creative research assignments, even though you go above and beyond what she has asked or specified for in research/design/analysis. Terrible professor!
I dislike this prof with a passion. Professor Matrix's sporadic and often randomized marking makes it very difficult for students to do well in her courses. She does not provide individualized feedback, but rather gives the generic class-wide feedback so you don't know where you went wrong and how you could improve for the next assignment. AVOID!
Absolutely terrible, assigns arbitrary grades that are not consistent with the quality of work, makes me believe she didn't even look at the assignments. Refused to meet with me to discuss the assignment or provide any feedback. Rude and unprofessional emails.
Although the course material was decently interesting and different, I did not enjoy the professor. She is disrespectful, disagreeable and unwilling to help students in their time of need. One of those professors who thinks they are the best in the world and don't want others to succeed. Do yourself a favour.
I hope you like to attribute quotes, you learn nothing except who said what, and that is 100% of the the content of the quizzes. This is my second course from her. No individual feedback on assignments. Went above and beyond on assignment 1, got a B! Phoned in he second one, got an A. Totally illogical grade system, if there is one.
She doesn't care about anyone. Gives random marks. Doesn't want to help.
Hands down the best professor I ever had. If you like Generating ideas and breaking rules, u will love her. I like working alone and connecting my own dots and hate forced group work, this has none. SoI learned a lot. Very accessible. Her format worked great for me (as a design industry person who finds traditional acad. soul crushing.). :)
She's a laid back professor and may seem harsh when she doesn't give individual feedback, but all you have to do is meet with her and once you've spoken to her, she's on your side. Achievable threshold for success. Raised my grade no problem, even gave me an extension when I missed the deadline and it was my fault. Totally kind, misunderstood prof.
Never knew how i was doing during course, only individual feedback was that I went above/beyond in all my assignments, yet only got B+ on them? No feedback for improvement. When asked questions in discussion forums, prof's response was only ever "google it". She did have lots of office hours available but not always helpful. Also marking took ages.
The people that complain they only get a B+ are the ones that do the bare minimum or put the minimum amount of work into their graphic research deliverables. Matrix is a very understanding professor, and she understands that this is an elective for everyone. I have taken all her courses, including ENIN 140, and would highly recommend all of them!
Very sporadic with grading. Uses a general rubric & even if you go above & beyond expect a B or A depending on her mood that day. Also corresponding via email was painful (took 2 days to reply) after being prompted by another professor. Not to mention unbelievably unprofessional, felt like I was talking to a teenager instead of lead facullty
She released each study module erratically, especially near the end of the course, some assignments were posted at, or after, their original due date. Any questions about this in the question forum were ignored or deleted. Grading seemed random and took too long. We were encouraged to answer forum posts with only emoji.
worst prof ever encountered. so unprofessional. discussion forum responses are vague and unaccommodating. no extensions under any circumstances. ask a question and she has an unrelated, rude response. shes offended her course was a bird so now makes it unecessarily difficult to do well in even with easy concepts. dont like 1 thing about her. awful.
awful. she refuses to allow her students to work on assignments on time. ex: assignment due dec 7, outline not released. its nov26. less than 1.5 weeks to work on 20% of our grade. when asked when itll be released its "this is not a self paced course. patience please. everyone is busy" like. we dont even know when we get to do assignments.
Worst professor ive had at queens. Her assignment outlines are a joke and provide little to no help about the task at hand. Id strongly advise not taking any of Professor Matrix's classes. Her lectures are 9 minutes long and posted on soundcloud, i dont understand how shes employed at queens.
Sidneye is an amazing prof who cares for her students. She goes above and beyond to make time for her students and help simplify the material. I can't believe the poor ratings others are giving as it does not at all reflect her as a person or the experience I've had with her. She's a real gem!
Professor Matrix is an amazing guide, teacher and advisor. She helped me with a milestone decision of my career and is wonderful with feedback and suggestions. I am hopeful I'll have many more conversations with her and grow within my innovation role with her excellent guidance! Also, she remembers tiniest of details about you and genuinely cares.
Sidneyeve is such a unique professor to find at a Master's level but she is a complete gem. She offers wisdom that is beyond what I have seen from her peers. She genuinely cares and makes her self available to support in any way possible. Her energy is infectious and she is beyond inspiring. I highly recommend her for anyone who is able to DREAM!
Absolute Delight! Best professor to take the best out of you! Love her!
Matrix is super flexible, and teaches through lots of fun and interactive work
Just completed a course with her. She is amazing. Always available for her students. She gives so much freedom with her assignments that allows you to be creative. Also encourages you to make practical use of the work. Super fast grader. You get feedback when assignment is still fresh in your mind.
Sidneyeve is one of the best professors, teachers, mentors, and coaches I have ever had. She comes to each meeting and lecture with her infectious & positive energy. She encourages every student to shoot for the stars, and dream BIG! I have so many great things to say that cannot fit in this text box!!! We love you professor Matrix
Sidneyeve thought me visual thinking, and it was really amazing. I had ideas in my mind about a business I was thinking, and her methods helped me graphically communicate those ideas. Now i have a better understanding of how systems design thinking works, and i will be able to apply it to real world solutions.
Before taking Sidneyeves class, I wouldnt consider myself creative. After completing her creativity course, I see my workspace, professional life, and personal life from a creative lense and its helped so much in every respect! Sidneyeve is also so great! I sometimes only book a call with her because her positive energy is infectious!!!
I have had Professor Matrix in ENIN 140, 240, 340, and 301 in my undergrad as well as MMIE 884 in my Master's at Queen's. She has consistently shown that she cares for her students, especially the way her courses are designed. She accepted my accommodations and didn't give me a hard time about it. I highly recommend her classes! She is the best!
350 characters to share all the great things about professor Matrix!? Ill probably need 1000.. because she is that amazing. She always has open ears and has helped me in her classes. Additionally, she 100% gets entrepreneurship and helped me with my business idea. She truly has a human-centric approach to entrepreneurship, teaching, and coaching!
Sidney eve is an excellent tutor with a contagious energy. Shes taught me to understand how to visualize my own venture and put pen to paper. Shes proactively accommodating and sensitive to individual needs. Id definitely take another course with her.
Loved this class and the professor!
I am a university instructor myself and a student at the same time. I have never felt passion for following my dream than as part of the class with Sydnee, I am honoured to have her as a teacher. She genuinely believes in her students and gives her heart.
Prof. Sidneyeve is a real gem to work with. She brings a lot of clarity to otherwise complex concepts and encourages you to channel & focus your ideas. Shes very accessible, happy to create time for 1:1, clearly cares for her students (and her dogs ), quick to respond and very considerate. She grades with record speed too, so no limbo time
I find Prof Matrix to be very approachable and knowledgeable! What got me most is her accessibility and knowledgeable on design thinking for entrepreneurs and innovators in a modern world. Her ability to showcase how systems can co-exist yet compliment each other has helped me a lot as I build my business.
Prof Matrix is a gem! She is always available to help, is very accommodating and shes hilarious too. She is very engaging and cares about the success of her students. Quick turnaround on grades too which is always a plus. Would definitely take more courses with her.
I had Dr. Matrix for a Design Thinking class as part of my Master (MMIE). Prof is amazing, uplifting, positive and so helpful. She is someone that wants to see you succeed and will go above and beyond to help you.
She is honestly amazing. Cares about all her students.
Prof. Matrix was always available to talk to. If there were any concerns she was right there to help. Really great to have such a supportive Prof.
Her approach felt a bit unorthodox at the beginning - but as we dove into the content, her energy, deep wisdom, and the way she sought to understand and engage with me in ways that resonated for me showed me just how much she cared.
She is so helpful and welcoming!
Prof Matrix makes me want to be a better student
Dr. Matrix is one of the best profs I have at Queen's. She cares about everyone in the class and always do everything she can to help everyone out. I think she should teach more courses in my Master's because I can't get enough of her inspiration!
Professor Matrix will change the way you see the world around you and help transform your ideas into action.
Gives very practical assignments and is very quick with the evaluation! She is the best!!
Professor Matrix helped me understand how to analyze real-life situations and present my findings in the most meaningful way. It has come a long way for me and my businesses during pitches and presentations.
Dr. Matrix is one of the best professors I've had at Queen's (undergrad and graduate programs)! She is almost always available for help and is eager to give guidance, even if you don't realize you need it. Dr. Matrix is an amazing resource at Queen's -extremely organized, inspiring, caring, and so much more!
Loved the course in every possible way! Prof. Matrix is a gem of a professor!
Prof Matrix and her courses truly can't be beat. I've taken quite a few with her throughout my undegrad (in FILM and ENIN) and she truly has been exceptional every time. She genuinely cares about her students and has incredible course content. Would highly highly recommend taking one of her courses if you get the change
She was engaging, funny and delivered value to my skill set which translated into success in my career. She challenged me to think about design in new ways. Not sure what else anyone would want from a prof?
Professor Matrix hands down had the best online delivery of all the profs. in our course. Her slides were visually interesting and well thought out and deliver of key points was detailed and interesting. She made design and branding accessible and interesting. Loved it! She is clear about expectactions so be sure to follow her guidelines!
Although online courses can be bland, Professor Matrix made the class and content interesting and easy to stay engaged. Her instructions and guidelines were very clear. I liked the examples she gave to clearly understand the material. You can tell she puts time into her content and slides and she obviously cares about her students doing well.
A professor that teaches with a very pragmatic approach. Real command of the issues discussed and connected with most of the class.
Professor Matrix is hands down an amazing professor. Bottom line is she is deeply knowledgeable, her unique approach to teaching resonates extremely well with students, her assignments are fun and inspiring yet still educational, and she communicates with grace and intelligence. Thank you Prof Matrix for making my Masters that much more enjoyable!
Professor Matrix went above and beyond to ensure that every student was successful and had all the tools necessary to do well in the class. I would highly recommend her!
She's a gem
Super kind and helpful professor, takes a genuine interest in her students' success and wellbeing.
While is course was easy, its content is applicable to everyone and i expect to use it more than any program specific things i learn at Uni. Prof Matrix did a great job of integrating self guided and online learning. Matrix is more than accommodating to students. Course evaluation style aligns well with course content.
Really great visuals and examples for design online. Also provided many resources to get started!
I had Prof. Matrix for ENIN140 & 340, and she was a caring prof inside and out of the classroom. I finally landed a big interview, and in the final round I had a case study that was focused on design thinking. I asked her if she would mind listening to my presentation during an office hours and she kindly offered her time and advice. 2 Thumbs up!
Amazing professor
This course was very helpful and the professor was super informative and interesting.
Had a great time in this course and honestly have no idea what the negative comments are saying. I got an A+ putting in a fair amount of work in and received clear guidelines on how exactly to receive an A+. 100% would take a class again with this professor I did not already graduate! Wish I knew how awesome she was earlier in my University career!
An amazing professor and a very interesting and easy informative course. I would 100% take this course if you are looking for an easier interesting course to help raise your GPA.
Prof Matrix was awesome!
She has a wonderful playful spirit that is entertaining, and also knows her material well in design. Was encouraging and helpful when consulting about assignments, and encouraged me life. If you want a serious professor, then will not be a good fit, but lively and fun for me as I take the effort to pay attention learn key takeaways
Great prof. Very kind, creative and thoughtful! Enjoyed learning from her Great insights!
Professor Matrix was extremely unorganized. I have never encountered a situation this absurd before with a prof, but Matrix literally refused to mark my 30% assignment for 6 months because she didn’t feel like it. I had a zero not submitted on it well into the summer until I went to the head of artsci and the dean. Bird course but not worth it.
One of the best experiences i have had. She is very particular about each student and has helped me a lot over the semester. I encourage everyone to take her class.
Great prof! There were 2 group assignments that were graded super fairly and 6 online quizzes (only top 5 count) that were really easy if you watched the lectures and did the readings. Highly recommend if you want a bird class.
Very well prepared lectures
Great class with an amazing professor! Easy A with manageable work - just watch the lectures, do the readings, and use tools like Unstuck study for study prep. Highly recommend this interesting, informative course.
Matrix teaches course content well. However she the group projects she assigns is unclear at points and also the midterm quiz had content not covered in class and content from specific sections of things that she labeled as not on the exam. She is effectuve communicating over email being able to help with poor assignment decription.
This was by far the worst professor. Extremely limited communication - emails were short and unprofessional and no forum/discussion group. Modules and assignments are erratically released. The group assignments are heavily weighted so reliant on strangers to do their share. Matrix was clear that students would have to cover the work of others.
Instructor is absent & does not pay attention on creating a learning environment. There are no forums for questions, no discussion forms, in other words no supports. Instructor is late creating lessons and assignments. Additionally, they appear to heavy rely on group assignments for the course, 80% of the course is graded on group assignment.
I'm convinced that she never actually graded work. One of my friends accidentally submitted work from another class, and somehow, still got a 75. I mentioned to her that my entire group used AI on our project, but she never answered my email and we also got a 75 (so did everybody else in this course that I knew) despite plagiarism and AI use.
