I had Prof. Colavito for Bio 105. For an introductory class I feel like you were expected to know way more than you did. I believe she is actually TOO smart to teach a freshman Bio class. Lectures are very very long with many slides in PowerPoint. She doesn't explain much of the material so be prepared to read in book. Exams were difficult for me.
Dr. Colavito is definitely a genuine person. However, as a BIO 105 (Intro to Biology) instructor, she seems to be over qualified. With each lecture, she presents so much material at her students and expects you to memorize every little detail when it comes time for the exams. For the most part, I have had to teach myself all of the material.
She really knows what she is talking about. The class is sorta interesting. She also will e-mail you really quickly which is nice. If you do get her for bio, its not the end of the world. but try for someone else.
Don't get me wrong, Dr Colavito is a great person but she is over qualified for the job. She expects everyone to know every little detail. She is also not the best at explaining during lecture. I ended up teaching myself.
If you study the powerpoint lectures and stay up to date you will be fine. Group projects weren't very fun but she was very helpful. Tests weren't too bad. She is very smart.
Dr. Colavito is an extremely nice person. I have never struggled in advanced science classes before, but this class was hard. She is way over qualified for this job & is so so so smart & expects you to know a lot of detail. Tests are the exact opposite of what she says they will be... Final exam was the worst exam I've evert taken. Teach yourself.
Dr. Colavito is a very very intelligent person. Her lectures can get a little confusing, because she teaches the material in a way that someone of her intelligence can understand. Not all lectures are this way though. Her exams were sort of hard. She is very helpful if you visit her office hoursmake appointments. You have to study a lot for an A
No doubt about it, Dr. Colavito is an extremely intelligent professor, however she should not be teaching an introductory biology course. Her power points were usually 40-45 slides long each lecture, which caused her to hurry through information without thoroughly explaining the material. Exams were tough. Her class is overwhelming. DO NOT TAKE HER
BIO 105 is the hardest Biology class when it comes to expectations. As long as you don't skip TOO much, study often, and pay attention, you will be fine. Usually, the information given on a practice exam is not on the actual exam, but the practice exam problems will lead to the answer on the actual exam.
Dr. Colavito is awesome. Lectures are full of material and have lots of slides, but everything is explained clearly. She grades fairly and is a big help in office hours. Also gives opportunities for extra participation points. But don't expect to do well if you don't put in the time (and a lot of it).
Very willing to help you in office hours and is very friendly. Very available by email. Tests are very hard and be prepared for a time crunch on tests. I really did like her though but be prepared to work very hard for an A.
Dr. Colavito is extremely smart and over-qualified for the job she is doing. Wonderful professor overall, but you will have to put in a LOT of work to get a good grade. Hard class, but she does her best to make it manageable. Small extra credit given here and there; easy assignments. Very understanding and overall just a nice professor!
Her lectures are so quick and doesn't explain the information clearly whatsoever. When approached for help she sends you to the book which is hard to do when you don't understand the material. Not approachable at all. Tests are tough. Would recommend taking someone else. She'll only bring your GPA down.
BIO306 LAB ONLY I am very glad I didn't take her for lecture, heard her lecture exams were awful. But in lab she was an alright prof. She tried to make herself accessible as much as possible and responded to emails, but I think she might be a bit too overqualified for this job which means she explains things VERY in depth/detailed. Meh overall
Dr. C is an amazing professor! She is super accessible outside of class and is very helpful. If you are willing to put in the work, you should be able to get a good grade in this course.
Gives you all the details so that you can get a better understanding of the material. Tells you that if she doesn't mention it in lecture you don't need to know it for the exam and that always stands true. Would highly recommend her!
Amazing professor one on one, but is a horrible lecture professor. she is okay for lab as long as you pay attention. she does not describe the material clearly, and hardly ever sounds like she is prepared for class, sounds unsure of herself 9/10 times and does not explain things clearly AT ALL
Dr. C is a great professor. Her power points have lots of slides, but she goes through and explains them in a way that is easy to understand. She tells you that if she doesn't mention it in class it won't be on the test, so just take good notes and you'll be good to go. Would definitely take a class with her again!
I personally loved having her as my Bio 105 professor. Her tests were not hard at all and very straight forward. Everything that is on the exams is discussed in lecture, and I never read the textbook. I wouldn't however miss too many lectures because she does participation clicker questions almost every lecture.
She rushes through topics and expects students to be able to understand complex ideas without explaining them. She has very limited office hours, and seems annoyed whenever students ask her to further explain concepts in class. Expect to teach yourself genetics, and know that every exam will be far more advanced than anything you learn in class.
She speeds through lectures. Exams are brutal, if you aren't a fast test taker, dont take her! Class exam averages were terrible. Exams are so long/hard that you dont have time to finish w/o guessing. You have no time to make any mistakes or go back to check some answers. She's nice but I studied my butt off for this class & still did bad on exams.
Speeds through lecture, doesn't teach the material very clearly and I don't feel like she really had time for me whenever I had questions. She seems like a nice person but just not my kind of professor.
Colavito was an amazing professor! There were three unit exams and a final, and everything on her exams was info found from her lectures. She posted lecture slides on D2L before class. Her exams were easy to understand and straight forward. Really loved her.
Dr. C is one of the worst lecture professors I have ever had in college. She speeds through lectures with no explanation of any of the concepts. Whenever I asked a question she would skip over it and never took time to make sure I understood the question. Do not take her.
Dr. C is my favorite professor! She posts her lectures on D2L and reading isn't really mandatory as she only tests on material straight from her lecture slides. She goes through the material a little quick, but will slow down if asked and is really good at answering questions. She uses piazza so students can anonymously ask questions whenever!
She's a pretty good professor. She basically reads off her slides so her lectures are very repetitive and boring. She also reads her slides super fast so it's difficult to keep with it and take notes.
Colavito is a great lab professor. She is very knowledgable and goes through material in a way that students can understand. She definitely cares about her topic (genetics) and if great to talk to outside of class. Definitely a very cool person!
I won't say she was bad, but if I went back to the start I probably would've chosen another professor. I tended to not really learn anything in lecture and pretty much learned the stuff out of class. A lot of material in the class was learned in previous bio classes. I pretty much only went to lectures cause there was a lot of in class assignments
Colavito is a must take for lab!! She believes that lab is suppose to greatly help your genetics lab grade, and therefore grades super easily. All class assignments she does with you, so you never have outside lab work.
Dr. Colavito is a very prepared, and very enthusiastic professor. You can tell she truly cares about not only her research but her students as well by the lenient in-class assignment/short answer grading, as well as a few extra credit opportunities. Her lectures are fast-paced but interesting.
Make sure you go to lecture because there will be iClicker questions within all of the lectures (keeps track of participation). The information is pretty easy to memorize and not too much studying required. There are a lot of things that I already knew because of CHM103 and high school bio classes. Expects a lot in genetics. She's sweet and quirky.
3 tests and a final that's 100 points normal test and 50 points cumulative. Tests are very straightforward. Lectures are off powerpoint but gives good examples to explain every concept. Sometimes there will randomly be a small in class activity, basically participation points. 5 point quizzes on D2L every week. Would highly recommend for BIO 105!!
Snap! She was very thorough in her explanation of the subject and test material was on material covered in class.
Loved having Dr.C as a bio professor. She tends to over explain topics, but it makes it easier when it comes to the quizzes and exams. She's very knowledgeable about everything she teaches. Dr. C tends to focus more time on genetics and cells because that's her passion. If you show up, take notes, and study, you shouldn't have trouble passing.
Dr. Colavito was a very good professor! Bio 105 is a tough class and you have to work for your grade. Something that I found super helpful - print off her lectures slides (she has them online for all students) and follow along. She goes fairly fast because there is much information to cover throughout the course. Definitely recommend!!
she's a good professor and has very good notes. her exams aren't easy she expects you to study for them. I just wish she had her baby later because she decided to take time off to be with her baby.
Print off the lecture slides!! Some slides have quite a bit of information on then and most have pictures/diagrams and you will not have time to write/draw them before she moves on. She tells you exactly what you need to know/not know. She'll answer questions very quickly over Piazza anytime you need her.
Cares about her students. Goes through slides fast but puts them on D2L so they're accessible to students. Go to lecture, there are worksheets for points given out on random days. Very knowledgeable with a sense of humor.
Make sure you show up to class and print off the lecture slides. She goes through the slides very fast so you have to study and teach yourself a lot of the times. A lot of bio 105 classes are similar so most of the professors will not spend a lot of time on the slides. STUDY HARD.
Really hard class. She goes through the material very fast and expects you to know everything. If you do not understand a lecture, you will not understand any of the next lectures because once she says something, she thinks that you know it. Weekly online quizzes, and the exams are very difficult. Get an extra credit point for knowing akindi number
Dr. Colavito is a great choice for 105. It is definitely a hard class, but so are all sections. You learn a lot but that is good. Her exams were fair and short answers were usually based on things we learned a lot about. Go to lecture since there will randomly be in class activities.
A good lecture but she goes really fast. Even though she says you will do bad on a test, ignore it. It really brings the class down. Other than that, its not bad.
Dr. Colavito is super smart and knows her field very well, which can sometimes be hard to follow but the lectures are interesting. There was a good amount of in-class participation points and hints about test material. Some test questions were quite challenging, but doable if you stay caught up with the material.
She teaches lecture material very well and makes things clear and easy to understand. Her tests are very fair and not difficult if you study. Would highly reccomend
Take someone else if you can for Genetics. She gives out 100% on homework and absolutely slams you on exams. Many, many trick questions! Maybe 37 questions worth 100 points. Ignore the emails she sends out after exams about her disappointment, too. Very experienced in the field, but cannot communicate it to students at all. Move on!
Do not take if your GPA matters to you! I work hard, had a 3.9 GPA as a bio major, and STILL this class was so difficult. She covers tons of material and tests you on very specific small stuff, often trying to trick you in exams. Got a C+ on the first exam and remember asking what I got wrong. It was only two things that were 4 part questions.
Avoid, avoid, avoid!!! Pick anyone else. Talking with other students with different professors, it felt like she should be your last choice.
Says her exam averages are below 75% and has to curve to make up for it. Her exams are HARD. Not hard like "if you study really well you'll get it". Hard like she words things so awkwardly or has very few questions overall. You'll be misled by her being lenient on homework, but she will destroy your grade with her exams. Choose someone else!!!!
I took this class when it was all online, and thought the organization was good--weekly homework that isn't too hard and winds up being like the short answers on the exams, and two get dropped. It's a tough class but I think all genetics classes are.
I took this class online. If you actually sit and pay attention to the lecture vidoes, it's not too bad, but there are a lot of them (lecture and practice problems videos for every lecture). A good choice for genetics, but you have to be willing to work.
Avoid taking this professor. I've talked to many other students with other professors and this one is BY FARRRR the worst choice. The only things in the grade book are little homework assignments and exams, its already a tough class so there isn't much wiggle room for error. They didn't seem very accessible for this being an online format.
Dr. Colavito wanted to see her students score well on lab assignments. The lab grade in this course was actually higher than my lecture grade. She made a lot of the little time we actually had in the lab and did a wonderful job of helping with assignments that we had outside of lab as well! Would definitely take her again!
She makes it seem like studying will be enough but it wont be. Exams are way to hard. I also was struggling with my mental health an extreme amount this semester-after reaching out for help and to let her know the situation she blamed me :)
Prof. Colavito does not make it seem as if though she cares about the wellbeing of her students. Her responses to questions are snarky and make you regret asking them at all. Some emails go with no response. Going over lecture material and practice problems is how she tells you to succeed and then the exam is completely different. Unfair professor.
I had Dr. Colavito for both BIO 105 and Genetics. Lectures are essential for passing which is difficult for some people. Looking over the study guides and objectives for tests helps a ton. She is super understanding of extensions and is willing to help students at any time through Piazza. I highly suggest her for biology majors.
Going through this class was like learning blindly. Lectures were poorly put together and rushed. Any live meeting was rushed. For an asynchronous style, she really made it feel like this class was her last priority. Genetics is hard already, but she made it seem to be harder than it had to be. Would recommend another professor.
I took this class in fall of 2019. Dr. Colavito makes you work for your grade. The material is very broad and this is a lot of objective which makes learning very difficult. She is very helpful through Piazza and answers all of your questions very quickly.
Dr. C is knowledgeable on the subject but goes way too in-depth and covers so much information. Her lectures are hard to keep up with because she moves at an ungodly speed. I always have to rewatch the lecture recordings after class just to understand what's going on. But if you think you can keep up with her, she is a decent professor.
The best choice I have heard for BIO105. If you took AP bio but didn't get a high enough score this is the class to take. My class had the best averages of all BIO105 classes (like 80ish) and not a lot of people had to drop. She makes it way more manageable. Tests are multiple choice with short answers related to class work. A good option.
I loved her! She is really nice and yes she does go kinda fast, but I personally didn't find it that hard to follow. Our class had the highest average for tests out of the other bio 105 classes, so she obviously isn't a bad professor, especially for this being her first year of bio105 after a couple of years of not teaching it. 10/10 rec her!
Talks so fast! Started every lab like we were already running out of time. What a waste of time for a class my god, not her fault but still. Her lecture was always behind my class which was hard for me. Would have liked if she had tried to connect with students more, class felt so disconnected. Fine professor but bad class.
Love Dr. C. Her bio sections almost always have the highest exam scores. You are given practice tests and she makes sure you know what will be on the exam. Doesn't make you memorize useless proteins or enzymes for different things. Don't need textbook. Group projects really easy. Also records lectures so if you miss you can go back and watch.
I had Colavito for BIO105. She talks to fast and is all over the place. Most of the time I can't tell if she's talking to herself or the class! For me personally, it was very hard to pay attention in class because all she did was talk the entire time. It was very lecture heavy and very boring. Wouldn't recommend.
Dr. C is a very knowledgeable professor and definitely knows what she is talking about but lectures SO FAST. She has lecture recordings posted from previous years which are my only saving grace for exams. Many of her slides have vague information that she builds on verbally which is hard to take notes on. She is a very nice prof overall but fast.
THE ABSOLUTE WORST! Makes me consider changing my major just so I don't have to have her as a professor
Dr. C is a very intelligent professor, maybe a little too much to be teaching at an undergrad level. Lecture slides included some very difficult concepts that were not on exams and I tried to study these unnecessarily. Exams are also a TIME CRUNCH. Be prepared to work quickly. Homeworks are helpful, however. She also posts lecture videos.
A great professor who has a lot of knowledge about the course. She gives extra credit opportunities and she gives practice problems that are helpful for her exams. She also records her class so if you miss you can watch those.
Highly recommend. Very good at explaining material but lectures can be a bit boring. Records every lecture so if you miss class, you can watch the recording. Gives practice problems for tests. Be ready to study a lot (true for any bio 105 class because there is so much material). You can tell that she knows her stuff! Very kind and willing to help.
Dr. Colavito was a great professor for BIO 105, I think the best one compared to the other BIO 105 professors. She gives 2 extra credit points every exam and 5 extra points after exam 2. Her exams were fair, averages around 70-80% but the final was tough being an average of 60%. But her questions did not try and trick you unlike other professors.
BIO 105 is a hard class in general but I feel she taught the material very well. She posts her slides so I HIGHLY recommend taking notes before class and following along in lecture. Only two group projects, lots of practice questions, and straight forward tests. Highly recommend her!
Dr. Colavito is a bad genetics professor. She talks too fast and doesn't go over the basics before covering more complicated topics. The exams are too long for the time given to take them and don't cover the main things we learn. She is rude and condescending when answering questions and most of the time she tells you to figure it out yourself.
Dr. Colavito is very knowledgeable but will go too far in depth in lectures and makes them more confusing than they should be. She does give weekly homework assignments and offered an extra credit assignment after an exam which helped boost my grade. Exams are extremely hard and there is never enough time to finish them.
Dr. C was a good choice for lab. She does rush through things and seems very stressed out when teaching but overall, she wasn't bad. She was a very fair grader for the assignments and the paper. I would recommend for lab.
I went into office hours to ask for help and instead got told to drop the class. I was only failing by a percent and had two test left to bring my grade up. Told me to straight up drop it instead of providing help. Never had a teacher tell me to drop a class instead of giving me help.
Went through lectures fast but there was also a lot of info. She never tried to trick us on exams.
Dr. C is very sweet and is passionate about what she does. Biology is a hard course, so you may struggle with little previous knowledge on biology and some chemistry as well. She does go a bit fast during lectures, but the slides are always posted to review. Overall she is very sweet and wants her students to succeed.
Dr. C was a nice person, but I did not care for her lectures. The exams were pretty average. I went to her office hours and she told me that she couldn't explain topics to me during her office hours and told me to go to the tutoring center instead. So, not that accessible in office hours. Overall she was okay.
Her lectures were jam packed with information and often seemed like the included more information then we needed to know. The averages on exams were around 70% so she had extra credit points and 10 homework assignments through the year. She told students to not email her question but otherwise is a nice and happy professor. Exams were a time crunch
Dr. Colavito is passionate and knows a lot about genetics. However, she was really hard to listen to. I often got bored in her lectures and felt like we weren't learning anything. I am usually an all A student and found myself having to reteach myself everything after the lectures. Exams were fairly difficult and I was always in a time crunch/
Dr. Colavito gave extra credit on some exams. The weekly homework problems aren't too hard and they were good practice for the exam questions. Exams were tough but I think they always are and she seemed better than the other options. She goes kind of fast but has slides and the lecture recordings on Canvas.
Teaching style not for me, I felt like she skipped foundational things and rushed into things without giving us a proper foundation. posts lecture recordings. That said, she KNOWS her stuff, is very respected at UWL. She will answer any questions during office hours. Homework every week (graded hard but fair) extra credit if exam averages below 70%
Very smart prof. Posts lecture recordings-helpful when reviewing or confused or missed class. Tough grader on hw (lowest 1 dropped) but hw is basically the short answer questions on exams. Answered all of my hw ?s during office hrs which helped my grade. 3 exams and 1 final not too bad if u study and do book problems. Moves fast during lecture tho
Dr. C had okay lectures. Sometimes they felt over rushed, and she doesn't explain the group projects very well. Biology is tough as it is, but as long as you study the slides she posts, you should do pretty well on the exams.
I found her charming and her lectures enjoyable. She definitely wants students to succeed, but the curriculum is very condensed, and it's a lot of information to take in. She is quite busy, but posts the slides to Canvas and you can find all the material explained on YouTube. You have to really understand the material, and study study study!
