I took Dr. Fourmy for HIS 317L and the class lectures were extremely invigorated and eye-opening. No exams, only papers. Lots of extra credit opportunities, but lectures did not help with the papers at all. Grading is extremely tough and is more of a "write it my way or get a bad grade." This is not a blow-off class... hard to get an A.

You might be nervous about taking an African American history class that is taught by a white woman, but Dr. Fourmy does a great job at teaching history fully and in truth. Two analysis papers, two book reviews, final essay, attendance, extra credit. All take-home. Sometimes annoying/anxiety-inducing when talking about grades; she thinks 84.5 average on the final is high. Medians have been mid 80s (graded by TAs), extra credit boosts a lot. Only really time-consuming the week before essay deadlines. A = 94+.

Dr. Fourmy's class consists of several essays graded very strictly by her TAs. You'll need to read lots and write gold. Moreover, you must extend your writing beyond just regurgitating dates. Luckily, lectures are engaging and facilitate the deeper thinking needed for the essays. The class is well worth the effort, even if you're a premed like me.
