I wish he would wear other colors than just blue or black jeans. He goes off on a tangent pretty often.

Easy enough to follow. Has his own lecture notes, so you don't have to buy a book. Lots of dry jokes, which I like.
Awesome. Great lectures, easy tests (compared to other 222). Very dry jokes, and sometimes they seem not to translate into English correctly. Uses his own lecture notes, so you don't have to buy a book for the class.

Not an easy class, but well taught. He knows his stuff. Pay attention and take good notes and u should be fine. Ask questions in discussion.
I found that he was fairly easy and fair with his curves. Good teacher.
Quite possibly the best Math Professor at UW. He's not a fossil dug up from the 50s who went to Princeton or Harvard, so he's down to earth and does a good job of explaining concepts. Nice sense of humor too.
Great Dutch dry humor. Math 375, now available with fewer comercials! Be sure to get the jokes list from the third row at the end of 376. We promise it will be good! Class is being held above ground this term, and we do appologize for this mistake.
Scizzy is hilarious. He should be doing stand up. 222 is possibly the toughest math class here, but Scizzy made it reasonable. He made it interesting enough for me to take his 234 class too.
funny man...dry humor, entertains you while teaching. Covers material so that you can understand it. Tests follow the topics/material that he goes over before the exam very closely. one of the better math professors.
surprisingly funny, devoted to teaching, and really teaches the material well. He seems to explain himself well and will never create an exam which deviates from the homework; definitely one of the best math professors.
Good teacher. Spends a little too much time on theory, but picks good TAs who can teach you the methods you need to know. His tests are fair, but a little on the easy side, so the curve is kinda high.
best prof ive had so far. very helpful, funny, and he reviews the exams so much you almost have to try to do bad. Made the hardest class for freshmen my easiest of all my classes.
Awesome guy, funny lectures, easy homework, easy exams. What more need be said?
Gotta love this guy. Great sense of humor, if you like subtlety. His exams are no harder than the homework assignments, so if you keep up and don't skip too much class you'll be fine.
Very funny. Love the accent.

by far the best math prof.
Very good professor, the class content content was difficult but he definitely tried everything to make us understand.
fun teacher for the most part
I liked how he had his own, cheap-or-free textbook that was perfectly tailored to how he taught the class. It's nice to spend $13 instead of $100. He's also really good at teaching calc.
Don't be scared by the weird-looking name... Sigurd speaks English better than me. If you have a question, you'll get an email about it within 12 hours. Midterms are in-class, so they're not too hard or long. I couldn't have picked a better prof
Horrible teacher. No text book all work done from his our worksheets that he doesnt give you the answers for later. No feedback whatso ever TAs dont show you corrected homework. Doesnt organize lectures very well just random. Horrible teacher.
useless lectures and unclear, typo-filled notes...no book...follow notes
Most lectures were useless and off topic. I would not reccommend him. Thank god for my TA!
Awesome professor. He is funny and always in a good mood. The work is always harder than the tests. Send him an email and he is always willing to help you out. Do your homework and you will be more than prepared for the tests. You have to be prepared to work though, it isn't a walk through the park.
As a weed out class, this professor will provide you with clear notes for you to study from. However, understanding concepts by the time you walk out of class is not possible. You need to study, and work for this class. Good with responding emails. Tests are hard, but not impossible
Hilarius professor, great guy. Lectures and topics of the course in general are very confusing. However, don't feel like you need to understand everything to get an A.
Calc 222 is generally a hard class and I would not recommend taking it if you don't have too. Angenent, however, is a very good prof. I have heard bad stories about other calc profs, but Angenent clearly explains topics in lecture and is easy to understand. Final grade was curved. A 100-85 was an A, 85-75 was a B and I think 74-60 was a C.
Uses a lot of words when an actual example shows it all
Great professor. Kept most of the class interesting and made everything seem very easy, however he sometimes dwelled on easy concepts and didn't cover more difficult ones in very much depth.
Excellent teacher. Makes many subtle jokes during class and is always open to questions. Responds to inquiring emails to the entire class list in case someone else has the same questions, while retaining anonymity. Makes everything easy to understand.
he is definitely a good prof in math dep, but make sure you follow and understand his own notes, not the book, because exams are referred to them.
BOOoo
Good teacher, great personality, packet instead of book is hard to follow. TA's imo were useless, often crowded with ppl and no answers for hw or packet problems.
Good Professor, Lecture is helpful and he cracks some jokes, didn't use a book which was good for my wallet, if one student emails him he responds to the whole class in case someone else had the same question, Exams are towards the more difficult side,I'm taking him again for 222!
Awesome professor! I enjoyed going to lecture. Explained everything really clearly and was more than willing to help students. Very genrous grader. I was upset I wasn't taking 222 to have him again.
A decent professor who is knowledgeable about what he is teaching. Very good with helping students one and one, but not so good at lecturing. Lectures were often very disorganized and he tended to go off on tangents frequently. Angenent uses his own notes instead of a textbook, but the notes were not very understandble and were filled with typos.
I had Sigurd for 221 and 222. It was nice that we didn't need a text book; he made a giant PDF we could refer to. In class Sigurd is funny and fun to listen to, and he also really knows what he's talking about. I'd recommend him to anyone!
He really made Math 222 a whole ton easier. He has plentiful examples, and they are always really straight forward. His exams weren't too bad. Have a good TA, and you should be fine. I really liked his teaching style. However, I did wish he used the textbook like everyone else.
it would have been so much easier if he had used an actual book. his version of the book had tons of mistakes and it was really difficult to study for tests. i would have rather had a different professor, although he was friendly.
Decent Lecturer, but he gives rediculous tests. He uses functions and numbers that just make you want to scream because they are just cruel. I dont know why he feels the need to use some of the functions he does. His practice exams are not even close to actual exams and final... well lets just leave it at that. Avoid this professor. He is not fair.
Sigurd was a really great professor. He was always very clear and straightforward and did lots of examples. I really enjoyed his lectures; they were useful and he was funny. I really liked how he used the typed notes rather than the textbook- the notes were clear and had good examples. I definitely recommend Sigurd for any math class.
This guy is sooooo bomb!! No textbook, just lecture notes. Exams are exactly like example problems from notes. Oh and bonus... i math teacher that can speak english!
He is an alright guy, but boring. From someone who has taken calculus before, my biggest thing against him is that he uses his own lecture notes which are basically useless, riddled with errors, and show few examples besides proofs. Change professors if you get him.
This guy is pretty funny, not to mention a good teacher, if you can't learn from him you have a problem.
loved this professor. cool guy. funny too. he is my favorite so far at madison. you dont need to buy the book cause he makes his own lecture notes for you to buy ($10) and use. they are easy to follow but if you go to class you hardly need them. i had him for 221 and 222 and i got an A on every exam. he is a fair grader and will make the curve easi
Pass on this teacher. My suitemate has his wife and we agree that she teaches the same class far better. If you could avoid him, I would
Ok teacher. Boring lectures and gives more proofs then examples which makes the class more difficult than it should be. Doesn't use a textbook, but uses his own lecture notes which does save you money. Lecture notes although have plenty of errors and very few examples.
This guys is so hot. I want to bang him so hard. I really want him to stick his schmag in my schmag.
He is a good professor and i really enjoyed him. Easy to follow if you go to lecture. A lot of proofs during lecture, but it helps show how the formulas were derived. A fair grader.
He's really quirky and it's super entertaining. I'd had calculus before, so I liked that he showed the proofs in lecture, but it made a few of my friends confused as hell. You don't have to take notes on them or know them for the tests, except for frickin epsilon-delta proofs. His wife taught my class the last two weeks, and she was a lot clearer.
He was not a good prof. he has his own "book" which is completely useless and doesn't teach you anything. The tests were so random, you had to ask if he ever covered some of the stuff in class. Overall, the book is what kills the class. not a great lecturer either.
I had Sigurd for both221 and 222. The notes were great for me as it saved $. Ppl who like learning from a book won't like the notes though. The answers he gives for HW have a lot of errors which is a pain. Tests were fair but the classes he teaches are pretty hard. Sigurd is really quirky and speaks perfectly clear. Liked him enough to take again
Sigurd is EXTREMELY unhelpful. His lectures are confusing and off topic and his book is almost word for word what he says in class so learning on your own is extremely difficult. Also, his tests are way different then what he says they'll be like prior to taking them. DON'T take his class!!
Had him for 222. his lectures are interesting at best. He does teach STRAIGHT from the "book" that he has made. But before midterms he hands out extremely helpful study guides and most the time the tests are a lot like them. I got an AB and B on his tests and i am a bad test taker. Very fair when it comes to midterms; final was impossible
He connects new ideas to old, which makes learning easy. However, most of his classes are spent on derivations that we don't need to know. His textbook is straightforward, albeit a bit slim on examples and in-depth explanation. Overall, a good professor!
Sigurd Angenent is a player.
Angenent is clear and concise. He does a good job of explaining the material in the most simple way possible. He also keeps the material relative, making future topics easier to understand. His exams are also exactly what you would expect with no bs. Highly suggest.
omg take him if u can. A great professor. his lectures can be boring sometimes frankly i dozed off lot of times but go to his office hours or your TAs and u will do gr8. just do the practice problems he gives before exams thoroughly and u will do gr8. great curve easy exams. plus u don't hav to buy the book so thats good. SERIOUSLY TAKE HIM
You have to be pretty keen to pick up on his subtle jokes... but I think he is an informative and interesting professor.
He is the man... Always crystal clear + dry, extremely dry jokes. TAKE HIM.
Has his own notes which only cost about $10 total. Only gripe, was they didn't provide enough examples (but it's easy enough to find them elsewhere). Tests were easy if you understand the practice exams he provides.
Great guy, awesome professor. Take him!
Angenent is the man. If you have to take calc, take him.
nvr went to lecture once and I got a B
He is a really good professor and one of the best calc 234 teachers. Gives clear lectures and he only tests the main ideas. He also has a good but subtle sense of humor. Take him if you can.
Take him at any cost
Went to every one of Angenent's lectures and none seemed to help what so ever on exams. Frequently goes on tangents about real world applications rather than actually teaching concepts. Exams are insanely difficult especially the final worth nearly have the course points. Avoid this professor, especially for calc 3.
I wish you could flag commenters for being dumb. If you can't learn from this guy, math is just not your thing. Learn how to do the practice tests and you'll do fine on exams. Lecture isn't always necessary, but it helps. The best part is saving money with the lecture notes. Funny guy, good class. Had him for 222 and 234(easier), Sigurd is the man.
Angenent is amazing! His ability to draw 3-D structures is impressive. There is no textbook and gives us his own notes, which are the same things he says in lecture. Lecture can be boring, but I think this guy is hilarious without trying or realizing. The exams are identical to his assigned homework problems and the practice exams. Smart guy!
I was worried about the notes instead of the textbook at first, but the good thing about the notes is that he knows them inside and out because he wrote them (plus they're cheap)! Clear and concise lectures. Exams are much like the practice problems. Just do the work and go to class and you'll do well in his class.
The thing i miss most about the University of Wisconsin is Sigurd Angenent. Enough said.
Easy tests. Teaches you everything you need for homework and tests. Also, exams are short and in class.
I wish Sigurd was my grandpa.
Wow that was an easy class. He was incredibly easy to follow in lecture although he did occasionally throw in some pointless proofs. Don't let the name fool you, he speaks perfect English. Exams were some of the easiest I've ever had. Honestly i nearly failed my last math class and I got a 100 on one exam and a 95 on another.
If you can have this guy for 234 TAKE HIM! I was a bit worried in the beginning having lecture notes, but that's the best part of it; he doesn't expect you to know anything outside his lecture notes. Also, he gives out practice exams that are the same format as the actual exam - he only changes around numbers pretty much. Take this guys for an A
Sigurd was the best professor I've had in Madison so far. He teaches somewhat out of the book, but uses lecture notes a lot. He teaches you what you need to know without the unnecessary stuff. Would recommend to anyone.
Best math professor i have met so far. It's easy to get A for his class.
Had him for math 234 as well. Great professor, easy to get a A.
Breaks everything down to an understandable level.
Sigurd is a great teacher who writes notes for the students, so you don't have to buy a textbook. He breaks down extremely complex topics into easier to understand ideas.
The course is not that bad at all, but there are a lot of relatively new concepts that you need to learn. Out of ALL the Math 221 professors, Prof. Angenent gives the HARDEST TESTS, but on the other hand he is ABSOLUTELY BEST at explaining concepts and answering questions. Attend his lectures regularily and you will do fine
I don't know why the ratings on here are so good. I got a B in calculus in high school & a 4 on the AP exam (took it again for an easy first semester) but I'm almost failing. The textbook is poorly organized and the homework problems are very algebra intensive and a waste of time. Tests are very difficult. Don't take this class.
Absolutely horrible. There is not point in going to lecture because it wont help with the test. the "textbook" was written extremely poorly and probably by him. i took calc before and did very well, what he teaches i question to even be calculus. you cant even find what he teaches online to even try and figure it out yourself. UW needs to fix this
He really is the greatest professor I have ever met!!!! The exams are not hard at all and he has review sections!! As long as you do the sample exam you'll probably get an A. He also gives extra credits policy!! Just take his class!!!! His lectures are really clear. I doubt if there is anyone cannot his lecture!
Nice professor, very clear. Exams are not very hard.
Very helpful if you utilize his office hours. Gives clear examples in lecture, but sometimes the examples lack difficulty. He even has a sense of humor. Very dry humor. The first test for 221 was incredibly hard (average 66) but the second midterm balanced it out.
Sigurd simply put is the epitome of awesome. I was very fortunate to have had him as a professor. More than anything else I really gained an excellent understanding about math. His class can be very easy if you take advantage of all the resources he offers you, which are many. He is remarkably witty and is amazingly clear. An amazing teacher!
Sigurd is very nice and funny, but it IS Calculus. It's not a fun class. It's challenging and the lectures drag on. You should definitely only take it if you need it for your major.
He was a great teacher. Wrote the text so his examples were like ones in the book. Easy to understand. Exams aren't horrible. Class is curved at the end.
Only take this class if you absolutely need to. If you tested out of it, do not take this class to get a "basis in college calculus" because it is a class of proofs of calculus theories. Unfortunately, Angenent is the "best" prof to take 221 with, even though he rambled on and on about the simple topics but almost never got to the difficult ones.
Went into incredible detail about the proofs for the calc. The lectures are not the most exciting lectures in the world.
This guy, who's incredibly dry for a teacher, decided to make his own terrible textbook for both semesters of Calc. Not only are there mistakes everywhere, but there are no answers in his "book." Instead of making us buy this piece of crap book, I would rather have an actual book from a legitimate source, rather than not knowing answers to his q's.
Sigurd is one of the best maths instructors that one could hope for. His lectures are clear and precise--with a dash of dry humor. Exams require you to understand the material in depth. There is a reason I plan on taking his class a third semester in a row!
He is an awful professor. His book is basically useless, because it has mistakes consistently through the whole book. Don't take any of his classes, steer clear of him.
He doesn't teach you what you need to know, just what he likes to talk about. He does elaborate proofs/problems that aren't relevant to what's on the test. He leaves a lot up to the TAs, so it's important you have an amazing TA in order to do well in his course. The textbook he wrote is awful, it's very unclear and full of errors.
He is a very nice person and understanding but his book is horrible. His examples and proofs are either too easy to apply to harder problems or are too complicated to understand.
Midterm 1&2 are easy but 3 is a little bit difficult. He's a good teacher with lecture notes online.
He isn't a bad teacher but not the best either. The course is difficult by nature but there are some concepts that he assumes the class already knows.
Pretty cool guy he explains things very well and i didnt even mind going to lecture
Highly recommend this guy. Lectures can be a little confusing or not really applicable at times but his really dry humor will keep you interested. Homework problems are usually pretty basic and they are very similar, or exactly the same, as test and quiz problems. Overall low workload and straightforward testing, what more can you ask for.
Decent teacher with appropriate amounts of homework, quizzes, and tests. Has a lot of math-related jokes and is a generally jovial guy. Lecture did not relate to discussions, however. I would recommend him to people who are unsure which math class to take.
This is a really good teacher. He explains all of the concepts very clearly and the tests are very fair. The text can be misleading though, the homework is difficult compared to the tests and there are quite a few mistakes. The key to this class is going to lecture and asking for help.
Sigurd is awesome! Extremely helpful professor who explains things in a clear, concise manor. The text was written by him but is actually quite useless. No curve for the class but tests were quite fair.
Sigurd is an amazing professor. His lectures are very clear and he doesn't waste time teaching pointless topics. There are no surprises on the exams he prepares you very well. I highly recommend this professor, he is one of my favorites.
Professor Angenent was the author of the 234 course packet so he really knows his stuff. He uses lots of examples so you don't leave class feeling panicked and is an engaging lecturer. His exams are beyond easy the class average on the last one was 94%. If you do have any questions he is super approachable and genuinely want his students to do well
Lectures very well and truly has a passion for teaching students. He wrote all of the calculus packets, so he is all about teaching people. His tests are the easiest math exams I have ever had. Just wants to have everyone understand the concepts well and is willing to give the whole class and A. Very cool guy.
Unclear explanation and sometimes goes out of topic. Never take his class. The discussion helped me through otherwise I'll never understand anything.
Ange goes pretty slow compared to most calc professors. This has its advantages and its pitfalls. Given that calc 3 is only a 200-level course, however, I think he is a fantastic professor. His lectures are easy to follow and the exams are super reasonable.
Professor Angenent gives slow but clear lectures. Tests are very fair, especially because of the test expectations he gives.
Professor Angenent is the best professor I've had in the UW math department. His explanations are clear and he is very helpful in elaborating on class concepts in office hours. I felt the course was too slow in the beginning, but it did provide a thorough foundation for later concepts. I hope to take another class with him in the future.
Sigurd was an incredible professor. I had previously taken Calc 3 with Bing Wang and had to drop the class because he was such a bad professor. SIgurd is infinitely better. He is easy to understand and only teaches the necessary material that will be on a test.
Sigurd is a great professor. His lectures can get off topic sometimes but usually what he is talking about is still interesting. The best part of this class compared to other 234 classes I knew others were taking were that the test questions were very predictable and the test were SUPER easy for a multivariable calc course.
Best math teacher around. He does not grade homework, but if you are keeping up with the discussion quizes, you'll be fine. Very reasonable with students. More theory based than practical based. Very efficient with use of lectures and students' time in general.
Super easy lecturer; did not cover all of the topics, was very slow in terms of pace, exams were very easy. Take him if you want a very easy version of calc 3 where you won't learn as much as you would with a more rigorous professor. HW not required.
Incredible. If have the good fortune to be able to take a class with this guy you should. Very clear explainations and really emphasizes what is important. Tests and homework are at just at the right level to be challenging but doable. Also, he is just an extremely nice guy.
Amazing lecture. He is one of the best lecturer in maths department to explain things.
The best professor I have ever had! He cares about intuitions and examples that can helps a lot for understanding (and also useful for future proof by contradictions!). He is a really nice guy, and his lectures are amazingly organized. We are using one of the worst textbook (super hard and dry), but his class is the most interesting and intuitive
Sigurd is amazing. His lectures are very clear and inspiring. He comes up with proofs with diagrams and motivates students to think with his hints. Exams and grading are very fair. That being said, you will definitely learn more and get less pain from him than others. If you have a chance to take a course with him, register without hesitation!
Real analysis isn't a very easy subject by any means, and mathematical proofs in general can be hard to follow, but Professor Angenent knows how to make this stuff make sense. I've never felt lost in his class.
Take 521 with him. He is the best math professor ever!!!!
Overall, would recommend. Homework is reasonable, but tests can be hard. Lectures are sometimes a bit dry, but they are always clear. Some thought that the textbook (Rudin), was dense, but I thought it was alright. No office hours, answered questions on piazza instead. Overall, a good professor
Just six words: BEST PROFESSOR. TAKE 521 WITH HIM.
Best math professor I've had. Wish I had taken another course with him before I graduated. He's really really clear, really nice, and his exams are extremely fair and easy.
Prof Angenents lectures are clear and the tests are straightforward. There are not many extra resources for the class but overall it is easy enough material to do well.
This class was very easy to pass because Professor Angenent would post a study guide before the tests with everything on it. This made the class very predictable. Lectures aren't that important as long as you kinda know what's going on. He is interesting and funny so that's a plus.
Sigurd is a great professor. He is very enthusiastic and has the rare capability of being able to simplify difficult topics in multivariable calculus. He posts useful study guides before the exams. I would definitely recommend!
Sigurd was hands down the best math professor I have had at UW. He made Stochastic Processes/Markov Chains clear and interesting while still expecting a lot out of students. Wish I had taken more of his classes!
Professor Angenent was very clear in lectures and was careful to walk through difficult topics with lots of examples and intuitive reasoning. He is an extremely friendly person and is always helpful in his office hours. Practice exams are very indicative of the actual exams; there are no surprises. I would be glad to take another course with him.
Such a great professor. He explains the "why" behind difficult concepts, which makes it all make sense. Real Analysis can be a tough subject but his exams and homework are fair and you really learn so much. He cares about his students.
I took math 421 with Sigurd and I say he is the best math professor I ever had at this school. He is respectful and helpful. His lectures are very useful and we dont even need to buy textbooks. Id love to take his classes again.
Sigurd is the best math professor I had at this school. Actually he is definitely one of the best professors I have during my college career. He is very friendly, respectful and helpful. I would love to take his class again.
He's very kind, goes through enough examples and provide visuals so all the students understand. Really chose to focus on the basics of set theory and linear algebra, which is how 341 meant to be. Homework prepares you well for the exams.
One of the best professors I've had by far at UW. Turned a usually difficult class into something that was seemingly easy. Homework well-prepared you for the exams and was very fair in terms of grading and tests. Clearly wanted students to do well and cares a lot.
Professor Angenent is a real gem at UW-Madison. He is well-known all over the world in mathematics. His lectures are clear and comprehensive. He is very kind and respectable towards students. His knowledge is beyond this world and I would say that he is one of the best mathematicians in the US. I would surely take another class. Great lectures!
Really clear and intuitive explanation with good pictures. Doesn't assign homework until last three weeks of class. Hope for more consistent assignments.
Angenent is very accessible outside of class, will answer literally any question you can think of in a digestible manner. Respected throughout the math department.
Sigurd is a very caring and inspirational professor for advanced math and research. His lectures are very concise and easy to follow. He always gives students an intuition how and why it works. I was in a research group on the curve shortening flow and the professor made the class very interesting. Highly recommended.
Professor Angenent wants you to succeed. He's very eager to answer questions, both in class and on Piazza, and he's fair about grading curves. All class lectures are accessible on Canvas. The homework assignments and other class resources prepare you for the two midterms and the final.
Professor Angenent is the best professor I have had at UW Madison. This class is very difficult in general, but he makes it so much easier to understand. You can feel his passion through his teaching, and he genuinely cares about his students so much. If you have to take MATH341, definitely take him!
Amazing lecturer who comes off as very sincere and fair. His grading is not harsh, but I came away from the class confident that I knew the material. I'm glad I got the chance to have Dr. Angenent as a teacher.
