Excellent professor that truly loves to teach; extremely helpful
Excellent teacher who truly cares about teaching and the student's learning exp.
GREAT TEACHER. ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP GIVE GREAT NOTES

good teacher
Nice guy, just happens to teach a very difficult course.
Outstanding professor and a really nice man.Clear and concise notes, and he does a great job of explaining things. His Tests are somewhat challenging, but they become somewhat predictable. He usually gives some chances for extra credit, which is helpful.
This is the best class I have ever taken. He is an EXCELLENT professor. His love for organic shows while teaching.Notes are great. If you end up with him, you are definitely going to learn organic.Wants to help as much as he can! GREAT PROFESSOR!
Dr. Blackstock turned chemistry, a subject I've disliked since high school, into something attainable and real. Chemistry isn't the most exciting thing, but it helps to have an awesome teacher motivating you. Cheers.
Dr. Blackstock had very organized notes and a concise and clear way of teaching. I recommend him for Organic 1 and 2.
Dr. Blackstock is great. He is clear, and his notes are very organized. If you go to class and do your homework you will do well.
Hands down, one of the best professors at the University. Gives clear and concise notes for this very difficult course. Lots of practice problems, practice tests, and plenty of opportunities for extra credit. Recommended for organic 1 and organic 2.
This is for any freshman taking Dr. Blackstock's section of 101 this fall. Be aware that this the first time he's even teaching gen chem, so you're gonna have to deal with some kinks. But Blackstock's a great teacher as you can tell from his ratings for organic.
Excellent teacher if you do your part. He presents material, and keeps you engaged, but takes a lot of your time. Quizes weekly, drops all but 5 quizes. 4 tests, drops lowest 1. Cumulative final. Good option for 101, but i've heard of some easier teachers.
Dr. Blackstock is very very helpful. Chemistry isn't an easy subject to begin with but he makes the subject a lot better. He is a very good teacher, definitely one of the better ones to take.
I really wasn't interested in Chem because I hadn't done very well in high school. Dr. Blackstock was the BEST teacher I've had at the university so far for the past 3 semesters. Very very helpful, expects you to try but encourages you the whole way. I hope I get him for organic!
great professor! Makes a very hard subject easy to understand. Do your part in the recommended homework problems and the test shouldn't be too tough!
if you have the option of taking blackstock for organic, take it! he is so helpful and actually cares if you understand. reading the chapters and working problems he assigns helps too. he is really just an awesome guy.

If you have the option to take Chem 101 with a different school or teacher, do it. Blackstock makes general chemistry a terrible class to be in!
Dr. Blackstock is a great professor to take for Chem 101. His lectures are useful, and always willing to help his students who try. If taking Chem 101, take full advantages of all the resources he offers you when preparing for exams. He often revisits old quiz/test questions and sometimes uses old text books, which he links to his Course website.
Blackstock is a great professor who is passionate about his profession and his enthusiasm about chem bleeds into his lectures making the class enjoyable. He's genuinely interested in student's grades and often pushes back due dates on HW if he sees the majority of the class is struggling and offers opportunities for bonus pts. Take him if you can!
BEST CH101 TEACHER EVER. get him if you can!!! he makes all of his old exams avaliable online, and he's incredibly helpful. has weekend review sessions before every exam. he is a stickler for attendance, but he actually made chemistry easy to understand and enjoy. don't fall asleep in his class though...he'll call you out!!
Blackstock is easy to follow and is quite helpful. He will help with any hw questions if you email him and is usually very prompt in his responses. All of the tests from the previous year are available online and are very helpful for review.
Take him if you can. The class is tough but he gives extra credit throughout the semester and if you don't miss a day of class you get 10 extra credit points at end of semester. He's a really great teacher, and cares if you do well in the class. I got an A+ but you have to make the effort and study.
Blackstock is the best teacher I've ever had. I highly recommend him. He gives you a bunch of resources, and extra credit opportunities. This class is not that difficult conceptually if you put forth the effort. I ended up with an 898/900pts possible. Take him you won't regret it.
Good guy and great teacher.
Excellent teacher. Lectures are very structured and informative. If you are Pre-med, TAKE HIM. I studied for every other subject besides Chemistry on the DAT and scored the highest in Chem. You will see all this material again, so learn it the first time with Blackstock!!!
This is a very interesting class. Its a lot different than gen chem, and a lot of my engineering friends who thought gen chem was a joke didn't do well in this class. This is a class that rewards those who work the hardest. I came out with an A, if you study regularly its not bad at all. Blackstock is an incredible teacher, very fair.
I love Dr. Blackstock! I had him for 101, and I loved him, so I made sure that I got him for Organic. I wish he was teaching Organic 2, because I would take his class again! His class is hard, but he makes it do-able. GO TO CLASS, study everyday, do your homework, and you'll get a good grade.
Dr. Blackstock is a great professor; however, he is very picky on his tests. Study extremely hard, notice every detail, and you'll do fine.
Dr. Blackstock is a great teacher and I would take him again if I could. He really cares about his students and he is always willing to help if you need it. Yes the tests can be challenging and very detailed, but the material comes from his notes and he puts old tests online as a study tool. Study in advance and you will do fine.
I was just about to lose all hope that anyone in the UA chemistry department was capable of relating to the students, until Professor Blackstock. He's the most helpful and empathetic professor I've met within the department. He cares about his student's success, especially if he sees you're working hard to learn the material. But it is a hard class
He really cares about the success of his students. Dr. Blackstock is eager to help students outside of class, and will happily answer your questions. The class requires a good deal of work for a decent grade, but I am very confident with my knowledge of organic chemistry after taking this class.
Great teacher. Not only is he very clear, but his expectations are also well defined. He truly cares about the success of his students. My biggest advice is do the book problems he assigns. They often reappear, in a way, on his tests. Definitely recommend him.
If you are a chemistry major, you might want to take him. However, if not, you should steer clear. His tests are progressively cumulative, overly complex, and time consuming ? making it easy to bomb if you aren?t having a good day. A major flaw in his teaching style comes from his insistence on memorizing large volumes of irrelevant data.
Dr. Blackstock is not the easiest professor in the chemistry department, but he may be the best teacher. He is very organized and clearly defines what you need to do to succeed in his class. After taking his class, I can say that I am very prepared for the next organic chemistry. If you do the suggested problems, you should be fine.
Blackstock is an excellent teacher! He is always willing to help his students. He makes a very difficult subject interesting to learn and offers bonus points as an incentive for attending class. My best advice is to work the assigned problems and prepare in advance. This is not an easy class and cramming for tests wont cut it.
Professor Blackstock really cares. If you have a problem you can approach him and he will help you, or at least get someone to help you. He knows his subject and will take the time it takes to make sure you know it. Organic Chemistry is not an easy class, but Professor Blackstock does everything he can to make it as easy as possible.
I was dreading this class before I took it, but I ended up loving it and Dr. Blackstock! You have to study a TON, but it will pay off! I though it was SO much better than CH 101/102 - a lot more studying but a LOT more interesting. Do the book problems (they show up on exams) & memorize every structure and number he says to! And don't get behind!
Lots of studying required but such an awesome guy! He makes class interesting but plan on staying in the library all of the time. Literally, whatever you have studied for the most in your life, double it and you have Blackstock's class. Memorize all the structures/numbers he gives and do the end of chapter questions, they will be seen on tests.
Extremely intelligent and very helpful. His aim is not to make the hard material easy but rather to help his students UNDERSTAND it easily. He administers several quizes throughout the semester and as long as you do the EOC questions and stay on top of the work this class is do-able. Study ALL THE TIME.
Very tough class, but Organic is a hard subject. He does his best to present the material to the class in a clear, understandable way. Not the easiest professor, there are easier ones out there.
Dr. Blackstock is great, but the class is pretty hard. If you want a good grade you have to work hard for it. Definitely read the book and do all of the assigned problems. There is also a good amount of online homework. Attendance is required, but if you dont miss a class you get ten points added to a test. Overall this was a great class!
He is an incredible teacher. I am so disappointed that he is not teaching CH232. His office hours are always open to students, and he is willing to work with you whenever you need help. I would definitely take him. Good for the MCAT.
Organic Chemistry is a beast, but he lectures his lil heart out. He offers plenty of review and help sessions. He allows a chunk of the grade to be easy helpful homework and attendance. The class is difficult and you have to work on it earnestly every day, but he is a great teacher. He just expects a lot out of his students.
Organic Chemistry is so hard. However Blackstock tries as hard as he can to make it easier. Take this class if you want to really understand organic. It won't be an easy class. Study smart, not all the time.
Definitely liked him. His lectures are clear and neat (great handwriting too). Test are not that bad considering the volume of info. Nothing very tricky on them. Homework is short and sweet. He's a good teacher and gives you all the tools you need to do well (bonus on every test and for perfect attnd.) you just have to be disciplined in the class.
Organic chem really is quite a hard class, but Dr. Blackstock is one of those great professors that actually cares about you passing, and he will do whatever he can to assure that. When he says something's going to be on a test, it will. He plays no tricks. Just be sure you attend every lecture and pay attention as best as you can!
This class is very difficult, you need to study often. And do all the assigned problems. However does give 10 extra points to your final grade for perfect attendance. Which helps a lot.
Yes, organic is hard regardless of the professor. However, I struggled more than in any other class. He is a genius but office hour visits were counterproductive and I always left more confused than when I arrived. The professor makes all the difference and you have to find one that works best for you, and in my case that was not Dr. Blackstock.
I love Dr. Blackstock!!! I really miss him for 232! His notes are great- very organized. Don't stress too much and keep up and you'll do fine. His quizzes were tough but just know the tests aren't as bad (longer, but really not as bad). If he says something's on the test- it is! He doesn't put any big surprises on anything
The class is doable, with another teacher. This class will take over your entire life for the next semester. Pick someone else.
Blackstock is a genius and teaches the material in a way everyone can understand--It's the amount of material that makes this class infamous. To succeed: Attend every class. Copy notes word for word. Study 4-5 hrs a day. Work end-of-chap problems in text. Know everything on chap outlines. Class is always kept late. Don't take w/heavy course load
VERY HARD CLASS. You HAVE to go to class and take amazing notes and study your butt off if you want to do well!! Def not a good idea to take with another hard course. I outlined the chapters myself and read every word. Also used Study Edge to review and do practice problems that were better than the ones in the book!!
He's a very, very good teacher, but at the same time expects near perfection on tests for full credit (otherwise you'll probably get half credit for any very minor mistake). It's an incredibly time consuming class and not many do well, but I think it's definitely doable with a lot of study and work.
The class itself is very difficult, but Blackstock is a great professor! Attendance isn't mandatory, but even if you miss a day you'll be behind. Be sure to take amazing notes and notecards of all the reactions and you'll do fine!
Dr. Blackstock is awesome! His class is hard, but it's organic. He is probably the best at explaining the subject though, in complete detail. If you do the assigned problems in the text and actually read the chapters, I guarentee you'll get it! I didn't do that for 231 and got a C. For 232 I actually took his advice and got an A on every test!
Blackstock is a fantastic professor that made me fall in love with ochem. His class if fairly difficult so I would recommend following his study tips. Read the chapters, do the EOC questions, study for quizzes, and make flashcards for rxns. DO NOT miss class or you will fall behind!
Hands down the best professor I have ever had. Dr. Blackstock is thorough, clear, and knowledgeable. He sets high expectations, but if you follow his recommendations (read, go to class, do the problems, NO EXCEPTIONS), you can absolutely attain them. Take his class if you are serious about chemistry - he's the best!
Great professor, hands down the hardest class I've taken at the university currently a senior. Make sure you read ahead and go to every class. He gives a 10 point boost to anyone that goes to every single class. Came out with a B- in the class but got in the 98th percentile on my DAT for OChem. Work hard at it and you'll be fine.
Dr. Blackstock may be the best professor in the organic department as far as explaining concepts to students. Extremely knowledgeable and genuinely seems to care about his students. However, he expects his students to know everything and be beyond completely prepared. An already difficult course is even harder with Dr. Blackstock.
Dr. Blackstock was definitely my favorite chemistry professor I've ever taken and possibly the best professor I've ever had at this university. It's true, he's hard... but that doesn't mean don't take him. I went out on a limb taking this class under him and I'd say I made the best decision I could. DO NOT take this class with a heavy course load.
Go to class. You need to have good notes to study from. He'll post last semester's test which is extremely helpful. If you put enough time in it's not that hard.
Dr. Blackstock was excellent. Organic II is a monster regardless of professor, but he is clear, fair, and cares that you do well. You will be expected to know absolutely everything. Take advantage of all of your bonus opportunity and study more than you ever have before. You can do it.
Organic Chemistry is going to be hard no matter what, but the way Dr. Blackstock clearly outlines his expectations and goes above and beyond to help students understand the material. As long as you put in the effort, he sets the class up to make it as easy as organic could possibly be. Attendance is not mandatory but I strongly recommend attending.
Tough class no matter what, very specific test questions. Nice person and good teacher but uses very specific information sometimes just mentioned in passing on tests. You have to study a lot but he is clear and kind and helpful. Mostly beware of any fact he puts on the board, odds are you will be tested on it.
I struggled a lot through ochem 1, so i was dubious about part 2, but Dr. Blackstock is a wonderful lecturer. You can tell he really wants you to understand and succeed, and he clearly LOVES the topic. Ochem is hard no matter what, Blackstock is definitely the way to go if you're looking for a great teacher. Do not EVER skip class!!
He is really a fantastic teacher who can explain extremely complex topics in an easy-to-understand way. That being said, this class is very tough and you will need to really put in the hours outside of class. There is no homework so your grade is solely based off tests and minimal extra credit.
Hardest class I have ever taken. Be prepared to put in more time than you ever have before!
Always go to class AND read the book. His tests have both material that's only covered in the book and material that's only covered in lecture. He lectures fast and doesn't review during recitation, just keeps going with new stuff. Multiple times I almost started crying during lecture because I felt so overwhelmed/stressed. Office hours do help!
I had him for 231 and am currently in 232. Believe what you hear about organic; that being said he is a good teacher. His tests are tough but he tries to give as much partial credit as possible. Homework is extra credit but DO IT; it brought my grade from a B+ to an A last semester.
Dr. Blackstock is amazing. He took organic chemistry from the class I was dreading the most to take, to my favorite class in college. He is very helpful and wants his students to succeed. Don't be mistaken though, it is a tough class and in order to do well you have to put in work everyday to keep up with the huge database of information.
Dr. Blackstock's class has been one of my favorites! Organic chemistry is obviously a hard class, but Dr. Blackstock is passionate about teaching--he even says he loves teaching undergrads--and good at it. The online homework and quizzes are extra credit, and usually some of the homework questions appear on tests. Work hard and you'll learn a lot!
This is the hardest class I have ever taken. Dr. Blackstock expects you to know the material as well as he does, and he has been teaching organic chemistry for as long as I have been alive. He goes further in detail than the book and you have to know every little detail on, he will test you on it. No matter how much work you put in, theres no hope.
I took his organic class at another university 25 years ago. To say he was inspirational is an understatement. If I am a great chemist it is only because I stand on the shoulders of giants like Dr. Blackstock.
Orgo II is significantly harder than Orgo I. Dr. Blackstock is difficult but fair, although he makes you memorize way more than any other orgo II teacher. So far, we've had to memorize over 200 common named structures and 50 pKa values. He tests on stuff not taught in class but in the book and expects you to know every single detail from lectures
Dr. Blackstock is one of the most inspirational professors at the University of Alabama. He genuinely wants you to succeed and do well in his class. He is always available outside of class. He offers a ton of extra credit but you have to work for it. Beware of his test. He likes to call them brain workouts and they surely are. Data base material!!
I struggled in CH231 with Shaughnessy and I wasn't sure why. Blackstock's teaching style worked better with how I learn. He requires you to know a lot of "data base material" but he gives you everything you need to know. If it's in his notes, its fair game for the test. Every test we had was very fair. It is a hard class no matter who you have.
If you've ever had a coach that you hated because he would push you so hard and wouldn't let you rest, Blackstock is the professor equivalent. Yes, it's tough and hard but you'll finish this class as an expert in ochem. He says a lot of stuff like you have to read ahead of class and you have to ochem everyday. I disagree. Also, so much extra credit
Hands down one of the best professors I have ever had. The nature of the class is fast pace and challenging but Blackstock is excellent at presenting the material. If you put in 100% effort, you can definitely make an A. Tons of extra credit opportunities and he gives partial credit on exams.
Professor Blackstock was an amazing professor. He expects a lot from you, and you must work really hard to do well. Although I enjoyed having Shaugnessy for 231, Blackstock gives you more opportunities to raise your overall grade. He made me genuinely enjoy organic chemistry, which is something I was definitely not expecting to happen!
I recommend not taking this prof if you wish to have a good semester. He is unreasonably strict in class no talking allowed whatsoever. Does not give a good lecture. Tests on information that he did not lecture on. Is rude to students in front of the whole lecture (will call you out on anything he doesnt like).Changes his syllabus half way through
Prof Blackstock is normally an O-chem teacher, making his chem 101 lectures a lot more complex than they really should be. He expects you to do A LOT of outside work on your own (e.g. reading before/after lecture). His lectures don't do much, but daily attendance is taken. He is very smart, and cares about your grade, but is not an easy A.
Dr. Blackstock is awesome, he really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. There is a lot of work in this class but there are plenty of resources to help, and lots of extra credit opportunities. He is a great teacher and I learned so much!
I loved Dr. Blackstocks class. He really cares about his students and understands the course can be challenging. He gives extra credit opportunities and goes over tests to help you learn what you missed. Tests are not hard if you know all the information. He truly wants everyone to succeed in his class so go to office hours if you need help!
Be prepared to learn. Blackstock was the best at lecturing, but he is also the hardest at grading. He expects you to remember all the subject material covered and additional information from the textbook. He is very helpful during office hours.
Organic is organic. But Professor Blackstock presents the material is a clear way. His notes are amazing and he makes organic make sense. It takes a lot of work but this class is doable. Put in the time and you will get the results. Blackstock wants you to succeed but pushes you. He truly cares about his students.
I struggled in general the semester I took CH232, but Dr. Blackstock went out of his way to make sure I was equipped to pass-- more than any other professor I had. Even with less effort than in 231, I was able to understand the content and do okay. His lectures are critical, so don't miss class. I cannot recommend him highly enough.
Silas is great teacher with incredibly high expectations of his students. The entire course is based on test scores which are among the most challenging tests I have ever taken. Homework and quizzes are extra credit, which can help counteract the hard tests. Doesn't take attendance but you will fail if you don't go. The material is extremely hard.
Dr. Blackstock does his best to make a hard class manageable. His lectures make great use of the class time, and you actually learn. It's not a class you can just memorize, but one you have to understand. The entire grade is based off the exams, with opportunities for extra credit. Hard, but extremely fair exams that are well structured.
I LOVE Dr. Blackstock! Orgo is an extremely hard class, but he does an amazing job at teaching it. The entire class is based off the tests. Make sure to go to class to get notes. Homework is extra credit. Be prepared to spend hours studying, but I would highly recommend him. He's so nice and my favorite professor that I've had thus far.
Dr. Blackstock is an amazing professor. He really expects you to know the material, so his tests are harder, but he also teaches it really well. This class is a lot of work if you want to pass regardless of the professor, so choose wisely. He gives lots of options for extra credit, like OWL homework, if you do the work over the semester.
Dr Blackstock is seriously the greatest professor. Everyone talked about how difficult 232 is compared to 231 but I thought it was easier (I had Snowden for 231). His tests are very straight forward and you won't be confused or surprised by what's on them. He gives a lot of extra credit so take advantage. Easily one of my favorite teachers.
Dr. Blackstock is a fantastic professor. I found 232 quite a bit easier than 231. He gives the exams from the past semester as a practice and the format is the same. But dont EVER expect a free pass, he rarely reuses questions or material. Almost all Extra Credit points came in clutch for final grades, and I'm almost certain he curves a little bit
If chem isn't something that you actually love then this class will be tough for you. I love biology but my feelings towards chem are the complete opposite. Mr. Blackstock is very passionate about chemistry and doesn't really understand that everyone may not feel the same way. He is just tough to work with if you don't love chem as much aa he does.
He is an awesome chem professor but attendance will get you. He is always there to help and he does give a lot of bonus points which is very helpful. Would totally recommend and you do need the text book for this class!
Organic is a very difficult class but Dr. Blackstock made the class very manageable. He is very passionate about chemistry and very easy to talk to and access outside of class. He explains things very slowly and encourages you to ask questions. He genuinely wants all fo his students to succeed and there are always students in his office hours!
I took this class over the summer and BOY was it hard. But Dr. Blackstock understood that. He wasn't any more lenient, but organic is a class you cannot skate through. You have to work daily, for multiple hours, but I promise you, this man wants you to earn the success of getting through it. Just work hard and care.
I love this man. Hes good at what he does and hes very willing to help anyone as long as you make an effort. Hes not an impossible pass and he gives several resources that are VERY helpful. Hes friendly and professional and his lectures are thorough. Concepts are your friend, and so is database info. Good luck yall.
Dr. Blackstock is a great guy, but he is an organic chemist teaching an entry-level chemistry course. He made things more complicated than they needed to be! He expects you to read and work all of the questions and chapters in the book. The final exam replaces the lowest test grade, which is a plus. Be ready for a tough time if you take this class.
Dr. Blackstock was an extremely good professor, I took this course over the summer so it was extremely tight on schedule, but he was very understanding of this and did as much as he could to help. If you attend his lectures you will learn a great deal and pass the class.
His tests are super hard and you only get like 5 tries for your homework and if you miss it you get less credit
You can tell he's passionate about chemistry, but he should not be teaching an entry level course. He made his class way harder than it had to be. I passed high school advanced placement chemistry with an A but I barely passed his class. He's very passionate but expect to work hard to pass the class, especially as a freshman.
The moment you step into his classroom you become very aware that the man just exudes knowledge about chemistry. Organic Chemistry is an incredibly tough course, but it is also very doable with effort. Dr. Blackstock's notes and lectures were clear as can be and you could tell that he wanted everyone to succeed.
Organic Chemistry 2 is simply a tough course. Dr. Blackstock works hard to be sure his students understand this tough material. He wants to see his students succeed and is available during the week in his office and almost always through email. His test are typically difficult, but that is just something to be expected with this course.
Blackstock is probably the best chemistry professor at UA, his class is tough but so are the other chemistry professors. If you pay attention in your lectures and try hard on the homework you should do good. But I heavily suggest using the quizzes he gives as your study guide. Chem100 is definitely the class you should take so you stay on track.
I absolutely loved Dr. Blackstock. He is an absolute sweetheart and I would die for him. His quizzes are difficult, but the tests are fairly easier and he does amazing reviews for everything. His notes are clear and he gives bonus points. You can tell he knows what hes talking about, and he will do anything to help you succeed. I LOVE HIM
I am not going to lie this class is hard. His only goal is to finish the material and not for you to understand it. This class is almost everyday of the week so be prepared for that, and have a quiz every week. If you dont study for those you are bound to fail. He should not be teaching an entry level course. However, he is a sweet man.
Dr. Blackstock is the sweetest man and the best professor Ive had so far at UA. He gives weekly quizzes that are pretty tough, but he drops 2 and gives extra credit for attendance. You can tell he cares about every student and their success. The only complaint I have is attending lectures 6 times a week, but it is a 5 credit hour class.
Professor Blackstock is a sweetheart. His class is not easy at all though. His tests can be difficult and the homework is very time consuming. Reading the textbook helped me a lot to prepare for the tests considering his lectures are not the most helpful. His class is a lot of work, but if you stay ahead it is doable. I feel like I learned a lot.
You have to work so hard in this class that getting any work done for other classes isn't the easiest task. You have a class 5 days a week with weekly quizzes that you are mostly not prepared for. The lectures almost always run over time so don't schedule anything right after. Try to get any other course possible.
The best professor I've had so far, made Chemistry my favorite class. Go to class and get to know him, you and your grade won't regret it. The way he teaches forces you not to procrastinate, and the homework and textbook prepares you well for the exams.
Very unforgiving. Made the comment that I shouldve planned around a death in the family and would not let me make up the work even after he failed to respond to my email letting him know why I missed class. Rude when asked questions. Teaches very quickly. Almost always goes over lecture time. I do not recommend taking his course.
(For Organic Chemistry) Blackstock appears to be a cool guy in person, but can be wild with material covered. One of the biggest issues with him is he thinks that all of his students only have Organic to worry about, so that can be annoying. Organic is a tough course to take in general though. A lot of time is needed to commit to his class.
He is an amazing professor. I have had him for 2/4 of my chem classes. He does assign a lot of work but if you attend lecture and you do all of the problems that he assigns you should be fine. He give homework that is optional (extra credit) and then he give you a list of textbook problems for extra practice if you want. 10/10 highly recommend him!
Professor Blackstock is a very nice guy, and very educated in chemistry. The issue is that he is too overqualified to be teaching an entry level class, and expects ambition from people who are just taking it or credits. He puts material on tests that aren't in the study guides, requiring you to research outside of what you are being taught.
nice guy but his lectures aren't very useful. You have to do all the learning in the class through other means. The homework he uses is is good for learning but doesn't cover all the material on the test. How prepared you are for the tests depends on how much studying you did in your own time, often requiring you to learn material that isnt covered
Professor Blackstock is a genius when it comes to chemistry, but he is not the best at teaching entry-level material. This is a 100 level class being taught like an organic chem class. Be prepared to attend class 5 times a week and study 3-4 hours every night. You have to be proactive in this class with learning the material or else you will fail.
Save yourself and never take him. He seems like a good teacher for higher level classes but for 100 he teaches like we are already 10 weeks behind and its only the first week of school. We never fully cover the material and we take a test/quiz each week. We never missed one. Had him 5 days a week and couldn't stand it. DO NOT TAKE HIM PLEASE!
Avoid this class with this professor at all costs. Most of the negative comments that have already been left cover all of the bases. Cares more about covering material than successfully communicating it, unforgiving and unsympathetic. He covered a lot of material I learned in high school and did a terrible job of teaching it compared to my teacher.
Blackstock is a solid orgo professor, but this was still far from an easy class. The only grades from the class came from tests, but there was extra credit for homework, attendance, and quizzes. Blackstock also used the recitation period as a regular lecture on weeks without tests. There was no curve, though he does use an expanded grading scale.
Final is Cumulative Extra Credit for atrendance, homework, and quizzes. I came to class every day to get all bonus points. I had to take this class twice. First time with leung i failed my first two tests and had to drop. Came out of this class with an A b/c he knows how to teach and he cares. Best chem prof ive had at this Uni.
I would not recommend taking his CH 232 class at all, if he is the only professor that fits into your schedule I would highly recommend finding a community college or other school to take this course. He is uncaring and unforgiving, cares more about completing material than actually making sure you understand it. Do not take his class!
His tests did not reflect the material. He also made them exceptionally difficult so that even if you knew the material you could not pass the test. His method of teaching was also sort of robotic. If you did not understand the lecture, then you would not get it on the test. He was willing to help but could not help me. I would NOT take his class.
Knows so much about chemistry it's sometimes overwhelming. Not super understanding about late assignments and sometimes intimidating. Offers bonus quizzes and other extra credit and I would say you should do it all.
Dr. Blackstock is great! I really enjoy his class and met some of my best friends in there. It is very difficult, but you along the semester you learn more and more how to study and what works for you. The tests are difficult so don't beat yourself up when you ultimately fail them, but there are several saving graces. I would take him for chem!!!!!
Professor Blackstock really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. His tests can be difficult but if you have studied the material and done the homework you should be alright. He does a bonus quiz every test for extra credit. He assigns a lot of homework but it is easy to make a good grade on and helps with understanding the material.
Often found myself having to catch up due to the speed and amount of content covered within the lectures. Lectures were not the most exciting and he often kept the class beyond the time you scheduled to finish a section of notes. Overall he's not a bad professor, but be ready to do lots of work.
Gave us homework during dead week that was due the night before the exam. Gets pissed when people pack up 30s before class ends. Goes over time a bunch and lectures are hard not to fall asleep in.
Tests were reasonable if you can memorize every mechanism and name all intermediates. Until the final which was ACS questions that were nothing like anything we had seen. Got at least a B/B+ on every test until the final brought my overall grade to a C. Really disappointed about his overall apathy and lack of preparing us for the final.
One of the worst professors I have ever experienced at UA. The class averages on our exams have never been more than a 66. That should tell you a lot about what you need to know about Blackstock. Also, I know for a fact that his exams are ridiculously hard compared to the other professor who teaches this course.
Just don't do it. His tests are impossible even with studying hours on end. He is a nice man, but you don't want him as a professor unless you want to memorize endless reactions and mechanisms. The grade you earn is the grade you get, no matter how hard you work or how much sleep you lose from this class. Take another professor !!!!!
Horrible! test were way harder than neighboring professors who were teaching the course.
Dr. Blackstock is the best chemistry professor I have had yet. Yes, it is Organic II and yes, it is hard, but Dr. Blackstock teaches in a way that flows together and makes sense. We had extra credit clicker quizzes, and if you do the homework and study the old exams, you will know exactly what to expect come test day.
Amazing at teaching Organic Chemistry. He made the material easy to understand and his office hours would provide help. So definitely attend office hours. Would take him again!
I have never struggled as a student, but Dr. Blackstock sure changed that. I studied every single day and night and still barely passed the tests. He will tell you key things to study during class and then not put that material on the test. I have attended every class lecture, office hours, and any additional help offered. DON'T TAKE HIM!!!
Be ready to only ever do organic 24/7 he will assign lectures over the weekend/holiday before an exam and try to cram super hard material the day before. If you're gonna take this class make sure this is the only hard class you take and dedicate every waking minute to studying. If he says it's gonna be on the test don't believe him. DO NOT TAKE HIM
The only people that are saying this class is easy to understand are the people that are naturally smart. This is the hardest class I've ever experienced and this professor only made it worse. He expects a LOT out of his students. The tests are ridiculously hard and nearly impossible. Good luck if you take this course with him.
Be prepared for orgo to become your entire personality trait. Professor Blackstock will make sure you are constantly doing organic chem, he even sent out recorded lectures on Easter Sunday for a test that was on the following Tuesday. I have dropped every other hard class I was enrolled in just to pass this one class. It has been a nightmare
He really does NOT respect student's time. Easily gives out difficult material right before a test. You can have such an easier semester with a different prof than him for Orgo 2!!! Do not take!!! I never saw improvement no matter how much extra I was doing or from changing up my studying methods.
Blackstock is a great professor. You will HAVE to study a lot, but his exams will not have any surprises if you do the homework and practice exams. Tough class, but it is not impossible to get an A and Blackstock always made himself available if you need help. Exams have built in bonus points and there is a potential for 35 extra credit points.
I don't know how this man still has a position at this university. Good luck if you get the pleasure of taking him. He does not care about his students whatsoever.
Stay Away.
Does not respect your time or actually care about you. Take organic chem with literally any other professor
Uses recitations as additional class lectures and still sends home additional videos if material does not get covered. No other orgo class did as poorly or had to work as hard. Take this class with anyone else
DO NOT TAKE BLACKSTOCK
The worst chemistry professor. Along with the rudest
Spent half a class teaching a mechanism not required while sending home three lecture videos on easter sunday
Dr. Blackstock is my favorite organic chemistry professor! I struggled a lot with organic I and was very worried about my performance in organic II. However, after putting in lots of work and going to his office hours every week, I managed to do very well in the class. The practice exams and homework are very helpful and will help you excel.
Organic is a lot of content no matter who you take. His tests could have been a lot tougher given the content covered. Do the practice tests and recomm hw problems and go to his office hours!! HW and bonus quizzes can add 5% to final grade. Passionate man and if you participate in class he will appreciate you, but he won't tolerate complaining
He does not care about you or any of his students. Doesn't care if you attend every office hours given. Doesn't care if you attend a Sunday afternoon study session. This man gets pleasure in his students failing. Never take Blackstock.
Yes, organic is a hard class. But when you compare professors, Blackstock makes it a living nightmare. Other professors make it a whole lot easier than Blackstock does. Not to mention, he sent us over 5 recorded lectures during Easter weekend when our test was on the upcoming Tuesday. Take absolutely ANYONE you can besides Blackstock.
I would NEVER take this professor again. You do homework all semester that barely helps your grade at the end as "bonus". I barely made it out of this class. I'd rather transfer schools than ever take a course taught by Blackstock again
Whatever you do, don't take Blackstock. He will make you hate your life.
He doesn't care about students. Not to mention very arrogant. You spend the whole semester doing homework that doesn't even help your grade in the long run. I attended every office hours held, every bonus opportunity, I did every homework problem, I put every ounce of my brain into this class. Retook it with another professor and passed with an A.
His lectures are intriguing and he has a great personality which makes it fun to learn. Tests are hard but all o chem tests are hard. He's very kind and goes out of his way to help students and be available for them. I wish I could take every chemistry class with him.
From what ive heard, hes good for upper level chemistry but for lower level chemistry, it feels like he makes everything more complicated than it should be. If youre planning on being a chem major or something similar, take him. If you just need one chem credit, id find someone else.
Hardest professor I have ever had. I think he is a nice guy, but teaches the class like you should have a great amount of knowledge on the subject prior. Tests are ridiculously hard as well. I do not recommend this professor if you are not willing to dedicate an extreme amount of time to this class. This class is much harder than needed.
Dr. Blackstock is a nice guy, but he relies too much on the textbook. Assigns so many homework problems when it's obvious that he can't assess all of that content on the exam. Be ready to spend a lot of time on his class. I would still recommend taking him though. He is a good instructor and his tests could be much harder than they are.
Dr. Blackstock is tough but will prepare you well. Don't skip class and make sure to attend office hours and do ALL the assigned problems in the back of the textbook and you will do well.
I had to drop this class because Blackstock was very unforgiving of my documented medical excuse. I was out for a week and he would not let me make up the exam or give me any lenience in catching up. Organic is a very hard class, but he made it impossible with how rude he was towards me even though I paid attention in class and went to office hours
If you get sick, you're out of luck. No recorded lectures and tons of homework. Lots of material is taught just days before the exams which means plenty of studying to do over the weekend. Dr. Blackstock is nice, but he was hard to follow if behind. Find a tutor if you need orgo explained in simple terms because you won't find that in lecture.
Decent lecturer who can get irritable over some weird things. I remember there were student-athletes who had to miss stuff for official school reasons and he was not very accomodating from what I heard. Always gave out an old exam to use for study help before each test. Always, always had office hours, and would have extra sessions before exams.
Organic Chemistry is a difficult course, but Dr. Blackstock helps to make it much easier. He provides practice exams before each midterm and offers up to 20 points extra credit for doing simple assignments throughout the semester. Exams are worth 600/645 points in the class, so it can be hard to recover from one poor exam. Great choice for CH231.
When he says to keep up with your work, he's not lying. As long as you're doing all of the extra credit online problems and practicing with the technically not required homework, you'll get through this class easily.
If I had to think of one good thing to say about this professor, I'd be sitting here all day. Take any other professor offered. Literally anyone besides him
Orgo is a tough class. If you really want to understand what you are learning, Dr. Blackstock is a great professor for that. He really cares about his student's understanding of the subject (especially if you seek help outside of class). His exams are tough but laid out similarly to the practice exams he gives. If you put in work, you'll succeed.
I was a psychology major on the pre-med track taking both organic chemistry courses to fill in requirements. Blackstock made me incredibly excited to learn organic chemistry. I'm no longer doing pre-med or psychology, now I am a chemistry major with plans to get a Ph.D in organic chemistry. Blackstock is incredibly dedicated, clear, and fun.
Dr. Blackstock is an incredible professor and knows everything about the material that is covered within CH232. However, if you want to have a knowledgeable professor, expect to perform as a knowledgeable student Advice 1 Take notes and use them as the way to memorize each mech. 2 Keep pka log w/ names 3 WORK ASSIGNED PROBS+OLDEXAMStillureyesbleed
DO NOT TAKE THIS MAN. I had to drop the course after already taking it sem before, making a D I put in four hours of work a day, went to office hours, sat in front, & knew how to study after not passing the sem before. I made an F on both tests after all that. Whenever, I asked a question he would just ask it back to me and not give me an answer.
Would use recitations as class times. On a Thursday. at 6:30 PM. His office hours were on Fridays at 5 PM. take that as you will.
Professor Blackstock is one of the best professors at this university, and he is very kind man. Organic chemistry is hard, just how it is, but if you do all of the OWL homework (for up to 20 bonus points added to the course's 650), do all of the suggested textbook problems at least once, and go to office hours he'll help you and you will succeed.
Dr. Blackstock is one of your best options for organic. You will have to work really hard, but if you put in effort and get help you'll do well. It's obvious that he cares about his students. He tried to learn everyone's name and even rode his bike from home to hold a review session on a Sunday before an exam when his car was broken.
Very enthusiastic orgo 2 professor. Makes going to lectures manageable. Uses recitation as a teaching period. Wish I had him for orgo 1. Take him if you can.
He's a kind and well-meaning guy, but man is his class difficult. There's just too much material to learn. Also, our class did better on test 3 than he was anticipating and so he made test 4 extremely difficult for no reason. Hardest class I've ever taken, study way in advance or you will fail.
Hardest professor I've ever had, bar none. Final grade is almost entirely exams. Class average on the exams when I took it hovered between 50% - 65%. I studied my ass off and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't do any better. He relished in making the tests as hard as possible. Re-took this class with a different professor and easily made an A.
This professor made me transfer universities. Enough said.
Blackstock's class is extremely hard. The material alone is hard, but his tests are unpassable. The tests have clicker questions included which is confusing to students who have never used those. He also requires you to come to every recitation period. He does not cover all the material that will be on the test in class (you have to read textbook)
Dr. Blackstock is a fantastic professor. He explains concepts clearly and is very accessible outside of class. He hosted review sessions on Sundays before exams, too. His tests are difficult, but they really ensure you know the content well for CH 232 and the MCAT if you're pre-med. He also uses the recitation as a required lecture, so be warned.
Very solid Orgo prof. Lower test averages than Shaughnessy, but uses EC and a modified grade scale to help this. My only real complaint is that he uses common names instead of systematic (IUPAC) names for many molecules, and the class feels more memorization intensive than necessary as a result. Super nice guy, and very accessible.
Blackstock is a great Orgo prof. He is a really solid lecturer and I enjoyed the class. A few minor complaints, mostly that he uses recitation as lecture and that he speeds up at the end. Regardless, I think that his class prepared me well and as long as you study, you'll get an A.
Professor Blackstock's class felt very disorganized and chaotic in timing. Compared to friends with other professors, this class was doing way more work and still getting worse results. Blackstock is a very nice man, however, I don't believe that his teaching style is for everyone. Prepare to have to focus on Orgo every day.
Dr. Blackstock is a passionate lecturer and truly cares about his students and the material. However, his tests can be EXTREMELY difficult and don't always reflect the lecture material. The recitation period is used as an extra lecture. He did not usually post completed lecture notes. Our test averages were always lower than other classes.
READ THIS! Blackstock is brilliant but he is the hardest and least-forgiving-with-tests prof ever. His testing material comes from left field every time! Switch if you can. I'm not the smartest- to succeed, study ~daily. How to get an A (refer back): do ALL EOC (+unassigned), do ALL OWL (copy), pre-read textbook before lecture. touch chem everyday
While Dr. Blackstock is a great guy, his class wasn't for me. I don't do well in lectures, and the fact that he lectures through his regular class and recitation period means that lectures were almost 4 hours every week. Also, he teaches extremely slowly, to the point where I was able to cover in an hour on my own the material he covered in a week.
Blackstock's class is an abusive relationship. He is nice, but he does things that make your life much harder. Where to begin... Required recitations. Ridiculous tests, told my class he never scales bc it's "worse for us." Grade is basically all tests. Had online lecture Saturday before exam week with material on final. Take Shaughnessy.
Prof Blackstock is extremely kind and caring towards his students. His office hours are extremely helpful! His class is very difficult and requires hours and hours of studying each week, but if you stay on top of everything you will succeed. He also offers extra credit and gives 5 bonus points on every test and 10 bonus points on the final.
I failed my first three exams in the class because I didn't go to office hours or study as much as i should have. He wants you to succeed. I started showing up to office hours, and did ok enough on the last test and the final to pull off the C. Study hard DO not give up. I promise you anything is possible if you believe you can do it.
Professor Blackstock is a great professor. Although his tests are hard, he spends two office hours a week for students who may have questions regarding his content. He is very easy to talk to and will move assignments past the due date if you ask and responds to his emails in a quick and timely manner. Be prepared to study for his class.
Dr. Blackstock is a great teacher and does not rush through the material. That being said you still have to spend time outside of class doing all the EOC questions, and he uses his 1 hour and 20 minute recitation as a lecture. His class averages are in the low 60s and tests make up over 90% of the grade but if you do extra HW you can get 20 bonuspt
Prof. Blackstock is an amazing teacher. He does a great job teaching things during the lectures, and is willing to help you if you need it. The tests are hard, but if you pay attention, he will make sure you are prepared.
Prof. Blackstock's class is challenging, but engaging. Attend lectures, utilize the textbook, and try unstuck ai for exam prep - it really helped me stay on top of the material.
Prof. blackstock truly cares about his students and it shows. I really enjoyed his class, despite how difficult it was at times. The bad reviews for him are more than likely from people who didn't put in the work and prepare because he really did all he could to prepare us for the exams.
Oh boy, where do I even begin. Blackstock as a person and lecturer is good... in fact great. While he has these good qualities, his grading criteria is undesirable, 94% of your grade will be tests with zero drops. The content you learn in class is surface level to what you do in test. Barely any extra credit and doesn't record lectures, BEWARE!
There is a lot I want to say about this class (good and bad). Understanding Orgo 1 isn't crazy hard but it's so much content crammed into 2 chapters and 2-3 weeks in between exams so you have to stay WAY AHEAD OF IT. Everyone saying touch and practice every day is telling the truth. Your TIME will be OCCUPIED DAILY so don't take other hard classes.
(cont.)Use Blackstock, his notes, textbook (EOC/owl/problems inside), andYoutube in this class. Blackstock is SUPER smart in every subject especially Orgo which makes for interesting lectures. I couldn't understand what he was talking about in the beginning but it gets better and he is willing to help in office hours, after class, or through email.
(cont.)A lot of this class is how much and how fast can you teach yourself while having other classes and commitments. He lectures 4/5 days and emails at 10pm so be prepared. His exams are not bad if you study in advance. He just expects you to have the knowledge at the palm of your hand which comes from loads of practice.
I loved Dr. Blackstock. However, his test are exceptionally difficult. He is one of the smartest professors I have ever had. His grading is also exam heavy. 100x4=400 pts exams:15x3=45 clicker questions:200 pts final exam: total 645 pts.The clicker questions are 2/3 attending 3/3 get correct. Our class average for most exams was around a 65.
Great professor but doesn't set his class up for success. 95% of your grade comes from exams. I had to work really hard in this class. In fact, he recommends that you spend 3-4 hours every day studying for his course. Use YouTube, UA tutoring, office hours, and study groups. Some say he gets bad rating because the writers got a bad grade. A- = 3
Blackstock seemed like a nice guy at the beginning, now I'm sitting here the night before the final, needing an 86 tomorrow to pass the class. I did fine in every other chemistry class I've taken, but Blackstock makes his class nearly impossible. I dropped every other hard class for this one and will still be failing tomorrow. Best of luck.
Blackstock is a cool. Absolutely knows what he is teaching and cracks jokes. The class itself is very hard and your exams make up practically your entire grade. He does offer "hw" to do as extra credit so that is nice. He doesn't take attendance but does in-class questions on clickers that count for points. If u don't go, it weighs ur grade down.
Great professor who is very passionate about the material and cares deeply for his students. Orgo will always be difficult, but is made better when you have a professor like him. Mandatory recitations make the 3hr course essentially 4hrs, but it allows extra time for material to not be too rushed. Make use of the old exams that he posts.
Taught everything we needed to know for the exams. The class was fun, but you were forced to go to class because he didn't upload the notes. Recommended if you plan on taking the MCAT, DAT, or any other national exam with organic chemistry.
Grading is rather harsh (96% exams), 20 pts extra credit total out of 645 (4 quizzes and 11 chapters of hw). Pacing can feel rushed, esp towards end of semester. However, Blackstock is very compassionate and explains things quite well. He is extremely intelligent and class is enjoyable. Definitely time intensive. Do hw and EOC and you'll be good!
The amount of work you put into the class won't be reflected in your final grade. I spent all semester studying for his class, just to have to take it again because the final is worth 33% of your grade. He uses recitation as a lecture period, His tests are also unforgiving especially since they take up 94% of your grade. I recommend Shaughnessy.
One of the hardest classes I've taken, but very fair. He was very clear about grading policies and taught well. Almost all of the grade was tests, but as long as you go to class/tutoring, you'll be prepared.
Truly a great teacher/communicator and you can see how devoted he is to making sure we succeed in his class. Orgo is incredibly tough and you have to put in hours each day to get by; there's nothing he can do to change that obvs. If anyone gives him a poor rating it's probs due to their not preparing enough. tho i would say pls more extra credit!!
Don't get me wrong, he's super smart, but he expects you to know everything right off the bat. His grading style is unforgiving so don't miss any little part on any exam question. I spent countless hours with a study group trying to learn the material and we all still failed. Save yourself and don't take him. He acts like he's the only class here.
Blackstock is the toughest professor I have ever had. His grading is “fair” if you will, but there is no grace given whatsoever. His tests are extremely unforgiving and the final is worth 33% of your grade. He lectures quickly and expects you to understand everything in entirety. The time and effort you put in will not be reflected in your grade.
Dr. Blackstock is easily the toughest professor I have ever had. He is brilliant, but enjoys throwing random topics he mentioned briefly in class at you on the exams just to catch you and make sure you have memorized all of his "database info." He posts no slides, there are random participation questions, and your entire grade is based on exams.
Homework is extra credit, PREPARE to study more than you ever have, class mandatory and so is recitation, everytime you think oh he wouldnt do that he will, tests are very hard, final was a bit easier than the tests. Recommend using the book very similar to his tests. ALWAYS do his practice tests they help. Class is VERY time consuming.
He's honestly a really good professor; you will know organic chemistry and every fundamental principle of chemistry as a whole like the back of your hand by the end of it. But, his tests are hard. Orgo 1 tests are all very easy as long as you study correctly and truly try to understand the material. Orgo 2, 40% of students dropped within a month.
Once you learn how he tests you can study for that, but he will put absolutely random and never discussed topics on the exam. You cannot know it all, but he provides so many resources that are super helpful when studying. I liked his organization and abundance of resources, but his tests were absurd.
While Dr. Blackstock is a very intelligent man, he was by far the worst professor I have had at UA. I found him impossible to reach and unwilling to help at all outside of the classroom. If the material does not automatically click, you will spend HOURS teaching yourself outside the class. Biggest time commitment I have ever had for a single class.
He's very passionate about Chemistry and does a decent job as a teacher, however his class is painfully difficult and hard for no reason. About 80% of the class grade is tests, each having about 60% free response. The amount of material covered is absurd to the point where studying for 40hrs on just one test only nets a low B. Avoid AT ALL COSTS
Dr. Blackstock is a very intelligent man who knows a lot about his field and is very passionate about it. That said, I did not like him as a professor. He expected students to fully know and understand even the smallest things he mentioned in class. Not to mention how about 90% of your grade is JUST exams(which were pretty difficult).
He's accessible and offers abundant resources for students. Although the total grade is test heavy, homework and quizzes are bonus along with bonus on each test. His lecture notes are more helpful than any teacher that reads word for word off slides so that class is not dreadful. I read the book and did the homework, and I did well.
Dr. Blackstock is a knowledgeable professor, but wow, this class was hard. He expects you to know every little detail, so it's really time-consuming. If you put in the work, you'll do well, but I wouldn't take another hard class with it. I did learn a ton, but he acts as if it's the only class his students are taking which made it very stressful.
This class is a weed-out class. I didn't do half the homework and got Bs on two of my exams, but when I started paying attention in class, I was able to bring my grade back up to an A. If you aren't a good test taker, this class will be your demise. If you are, you probably only need to put 5ish hours of studying for each exam.
READ THE TEXTBOOK BEFORE CLASS! He teaches this class well, but YOU have to put in more work than just showing up to lecture every week. Orgo II is a very dense class & there's no way around that. Some of his T/F questions are diabolical, but other than that he doesn't try to trick you (too much) on exams.
It's a LOT tougher than orgo 1 hands down. Read the textbook, come to class...he's honestly not that bad although there are some crazy T/F and structure-drawing q's. If you treat this as your toughest class, an A is completely possible with a good 20-25hrs prep before tests. If you can't get >70s on these tests you need to srsly rethink premed.
I'm not the best at chem in general, but this is by far the hardest class i've ever taken. For orgo 2, be ready to over prepare for test 1 and 2, it will set you up well for the next tests. he does not post video lectures, so be prepared to go to every class. He gives a good amount of extra credit, and he is quite good at getting info across.
His class was not quite as bad as I expected it to be, but it was hard. He is super passionate about what he teaches, and this leads to some unnecessarily high expectations, which is compounded by the fact that the class is based almost entirely on test grades. Test 2 is tough, so I would plan to drop that one and replace it with the final.
If you do not have a good foundation from orgo 1 (which I took with a different prof), his class will be exceedingly difficult. He lectures EXTREMELY fast, you need to learn basically everything on your own ahead of time. The recitations are just more lecturing. If you want a true review from him, you need to attend office hours.
If you aren't religious, choose a religion and pray.
Orgo is a hard class no matter what but Dr.Blackstock's tests are very difficult and require mastery level of material. He provides you with a ton of resources and hosts group office hours which are helpful, but I struggled with the pace and amount of material. The homeworks after unit 2 take on average 7 hours. Youtube is your bff for this class.
The class is very difficult, and exams make up 93% of your grade. His love for chemistry is contagious and he's great at explaining content. Tests are hard but graded in a way that rewards an in depth understanding of content. I recommend taking him for Organic 1 because he's the only professor for Organic 2. Advantageous to understand his style.
Blackstock would rush through every topic in class. A couple of problems that were given on his exams were topics that I'm pretty sure he did not cover in class. You basically have to teach it all to yourself.
Blackstock is one of the nicest and most understanding professors I've ever had BUT this class is very difficult and I felt as though the time I put in did not pay off. His exams are very hard, and worth the majority of your grade. I have heard the final is easier so we will see.
Wouldn't recommend this professor to my worst enemy. Doesn't care about your success and quite frankly tells you that.
Memorize EVERYTHING. He gives partial credit, which is nice. Lectures are super important and helpful. Frustrating because the last 2 units are rushed. He will ask you to draw a random compound he pointed out once, so be prepared. Overall, though, he is very sweet, and you can tell how much he loves the subject. I fear and respect him.
This class is just hard. Dr. Blackstock is so nice though. His tests can be tricky and he will sometimes ask specific questions about things we breezed over in class. He fully expects you to read the textbook also. You have to put in a ton of work to do well, but Dr. Blackstock is 100% willing to help you. He build bonus into the tests also.
Orgo is excruciatingly difficult. Most poor opinions reflect the class difficulty rather than the professor. Prof is decent (encouraging, loves chemistry, very accessible) but is not good at explaining. Must read the textbook. Tutoring is your best friend. Expect to spend minimum an hour every day outside of class on orgo.
Extremely difficult class. Homework takes very long to do and he 100% expects you to read the textbook. Hard sometimes to balance other classes with this one since it takes up such a majority of your time. Offers partial credit on tests and sometimes asks you very specific things he mentioned once in class. Does offer extra credit which is nice
Blackstock's class was the closest I've come to making a B in my life. Tests are worth 93% of the grade, and the other 7% is given with attendance questions which are tricky. He breezes over concepts and likes to implement the smallest of topics covered in class on his midterms. The final can be worth up to 50% of grade and is easier (It saved me)
Overall, he is a tough professor but the class is doable. You need to read the chapter and do all the problems he recommends and then some, which simply requires time and dedication. His multiple choice can be really tricky, so if there is anything you have questions about absolutely ask. The final is way easier, but still heavy studying all around
Blackstock is a nice guy but bad at explaining things. Assigns ridiculous amounts of HW, but it's important you do it for practice. He will test you on topics not taught in class or in the textbook, but because it is a concept you need to reason, it's fair game. The attendance questions are hard, so you will not get full credit if you are wrong.
This class was hard, but not as bad as everyone else makes it seem. I never read the textbook, just made sure i knew all the lecture material and was fine. Blackstock is a nice guy just makes his tests really hard, but they are doable. The final is easy and replaces your lowest test which helps. I would choose another professor if it's an option.
