Very, very nice guy, with good intentions in his life. Explained things very well. A little hard to hear, but good teacher.
Brand new to North hennepin from Vermont, looks like Ewan Mcgregor and Jude Law mixed, cool dude. He does accents and tells jokes, funny guy. Highly recommended. Oh and hes a good teacher, too.
Has a tendancy to use the word "wicked" as in "****erectus had wicked big brains". *is amused by that* Lectures are enganging and interesting, but tests are HARD and dates for movies and activies changed a lot. Hopefully, these will get worked out as he gets used to teaching at NHCC.
I think he is a good teacher, good sense of humor, very interesting material. Exams are tough, and the study guide doesnt help much. Doesnt take attendance, alot of interesting movies.
Best teacher I've had at NHCC. "wicked" smart in his field, funny, and enthusiastic. Presents material incredibly well, and the tests are straightforward but you need to study a bit. Honestly I can't imagine having a better teacher for this class than Silas, and I recommend him to everyone. He is very helpful in and out of class and just rocks!
GREAT teacher! He is extremely helpful and is extremely uptight. He tells jokes and makes his lectures pretty interested. The powerpoints can get old, but he livens them up with stories. Good movies, hard tests!
honestly the only reason i kept going to class was because he was kinda hot for a teacher...just saying
i must concur with the previous statement
Best professor at NHCC! Great sense of humor, good looking, and very smart in his field. His exams were very, very hard, but he was always helpful. Keep pushing him for a study guide three weeks ahead before the exam, then you'll do well.
Silas is a great instructor. I never would have thought that anthropology could be so enjoyable. He really is a sweet man and as an added bonus he is very good looking. This is an extremely challenging class, but Silas is very clear about what he expects and always gives out a study guide, although sometimes you have to ask for it more than once
it was an interesting class defeinately more enjyable then i thought it would be. he is a fairly easy grader if you know your stuff, and are used to college lvl work. tests are alright, kinda tricky, but some good funny questions too. papers are on par w/ real research papers. do good work and get a good grade. iam takign his phys. anthro next
Mallery teaches a very interesting class and makes a lot of jokes (he has both a sense of humor and the occasional need to keep students awake). Tests are kind of difficult, just make sure you study. Alot. The one paper was easy. Follow directions and you should do well. Make sure to show up too, attendance counts toward your grade!
Very Fun teacher to have! He has difficult tests, but the in class assignments are easy points. If he did not have such difficult tests, i would take him again for his other class. Would make sure that the learning experience is enjoyable for the student.
Great teacher. Educated, funny and helpful. Take one of his classes.
He takes anthropology way too serious, and he is too young to understand that not all of his students will care as much as he does in a required intro class.. He tries to be funny to win his students attention. His test questions are difficult and filled to the brim with ambiguity. He focuses too much on detail for an intro class.
Silas is a great professor. His lectures are both entertaining, and he finds a way to make even the most boring subject matter interesting. His tests are challenging, but can be easily Aced if the required reading is done prior to the lectures, and if one studies enough. Overall...Silas ROCKS!
FANTASTIC professor! His lectures are entertaining as he makes lots of jokes and tells interesting stories. Although the content that he teaches is pretty difficult, he makes it very easy to understand. His tests are college level so as long as you really study, you will do fine in his class. No attendance counted. Highly recommended!
OUTSTANDING PROFESSOR!! ABSOLUTELY UNDERSTANDING AND CAN HONESTLY TEACH. HIS ANALOGIES TO TEACHING HELP YOU LEARN QUICKLY. ONE OF THE BEST ENCOURAGING PROFESSOR'S I'VE EVER HAD! =) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. If you study your notes for your exams and can apply it, you will get an A. Read the materials, i.e. books and notes!
Silas is the most understanding teacher I have had at NHCC. He makes lectures into everyday reality, jokes into boring topics, and is ALWAYS available when you need him. Take a course with him and you will not regret it. The course is no way easy, but your in college... grow up. Great Teacher!!
Very great professor. Always willing to help and tries to be funny all the time. I would totally recommend him to everyone. His test are a little challenging but he is a fair grader and he curves the grade.
Difficult to imagine a better teacher for this subject. I failed this class with another prof, but now am at the top of the class this time. Not because it's an easy class, but because it's easy to learn from him. VERY kind and approachable.
The course was intense, ecpecially in the short summer session. If you take good notes and take advantage of the power points available on line and the study guides, it would be hard not to get an A. Common sense and a lot of time is needed for this course.
Very interesting, I learnt a lot! If you want to get an A: Don't read the book, it's just a waste of time, BUT know the presentations he posts on-line very well!!!
Awesome Prof. I RECOMMEND HIM. He tries to be funny & makes the class not boring. Challenging tests so TAKE good NOTES & pay attention. He'll usually curve the grades. HAVE FUN & ENJOY!
Silas is a great teacher. He provides the class with a ton of information in a very professional yet hilarious way. He has a great sense of humour that makes class so much easier. He also treats the students with a lot of respect and conveys a ton of confidence in them.
attractively funny and nice. but did not learn to much overall.
Silas is amazing at what he does. He lectured day in and day out, but he's incredibly engaging, and he's crystal clear in his explanation of the material. He clearly loves what he does, and that makes it hard not to love the class. I really learned a lot through him. This is the kind of guy that changes your expectations for your professors.
What an amazing teacher. He's very engaging and keeps a dull topic interesting! The tests focus mainly on the lectures, so if you pay attention and take notes you should ace them!
One of my favorite teachers so far. He makes the topic interesting with his witty comments and is very forgiving when it comes to grades. I highly recommend him.
He was a really fun professor, and I would take him again. Physical Anthropology was a challenge for me, but he is very clear with expectations and curves the test scores so we all didn't fail. He seems like a great guy, definitely one of the most caring and fun professors at NHCC.
he's a great teacher! super funny and makes the class very interesting! there's one homework, a paper, 2 pages max! and four exams! they are hard but the final is only on the last 2 chapt. and he lets you use notes! he's a very understanding teacher and makes it comfortable for you to ask any questions! class is mostly lecture but he's funny!
silas is a really funny guy, but the tests are very difficult.
Silas is the nicest teacher I have ever had. He is very funny and always loves to keep his students amused during class. Tests can get pretty detailed, but again he is very lenient in his grading and can easily relate to his students. I recommend him to anyone that wants to take his class!!!
Very good!
He's a great teacher and all that, but that's been said, so let me say that Silas is a remarkable speaker. It's not unlike the Obama phenomenon: he delivers his lectures so well--whether the topic is dry, controversial, or interesting in itself--that you have no choice but to pay attention and learn something. It's a trap, I think.
He knows how to teach freshman age young generation people. I like the way he gives his lecture :)
He's reasonable, funny/entertaining, knowledgeable, and kind. Read the required texts and follow the syllabus and you should do just fine :)
Good instructor, because he's clear on what he says and wants, especially when explaining anthropology terms to the class-you can understand him perfectly. (The memorization kills) He has cool, fake artifacts to show the class. There is a LOT to learn and he doesn?t lose track of any details in the studies, but it?s all interesting anyway.
He is a great teacher and all around a great guy! Hard tests, but just make sure to go to the lectures and read the book.
He was amazing! Really interesting! He uses slide shows and has the notes for you to print off on D2L the tests are take home! I learned a lot. Not bad to look at either :)
Silas has a passion for the material he's teaching that is contagious. His lectures are engaging and entertaining, and his lecturing style gives a crystal clear knowledge of terms and concepts being communicated.
Funny, enjoys telling stories, & makes class interesting. He's very knowledgeable about what he's teaching & has a passion for it. Tests are hard & there's a lot of reading involve. But overall he's a great instructor.
Uses every second of the class time for his lectures which are extremely boring. His tests are extremely difficult and his grading is tough. Be prepared to study alot for tests. He is the only anthropology teacher at NHCC so you have no choice but to take his course. Be prepared to be frustrated if you take this course.
Great professor. Very lenient. Funny, nice, and always willing to go the extra mile for a student. Tests are tough, but he grades on a curve. Doesn't give out a lot of homework if you exclude reading. He also gives out a lot of extra credit if you need it. Definitely take him! You won't regret it.
Dr. Mallery is a great teacher! He is approachable and nice! His instructions are clear and if you are a good student by reading everything you're required to, and paying attention in class (and participate at least a little) you will be fine. The only thing was people tended to blurt out some controversial stuff. That happens tho.
Silas was a great professor! If you want a class that is interesting and a teacher that can acutally teach, you should go with him. He encourages you to come to his office for help, and if you do than you will get a good bit of advice. I give him an A+
He's a pretty good professor. His tests are kind of hard. Most students avg. of the test were between 60% to 70%. However, you will still pass the class because he will curve the test and give everybody 10pts extra. Not too bad. I was worried about this class but at the end I passed.
This guy is one of those prof you'll always remember, attending his class was so fun. He truly made everything fascinating and was hilarious. I wish he taught more classes I would take him for everything.
Very good teacher!!!!! Attendance will almost ensure a good grade aka you don't really need to read the book, but it does help. There are only papers (about 5 pgs) so work load is very managable. Is a very humane professor and is approachable.
I took 1010 & 1020 with Dr. Mallery and he is awesome! His lectures and PowerPoint are very clear and engaging. His tests are not too difficult and the textbooks are not difficult to read. He has a great sense of humor and really cares about Anthropology & his students.
Good instructor. He wnjoys his subject, is respectful, yet comedic. He does like to swear and make jokes, so that might be an issue for some, but I would definitely take him again. He makes boring topics interesting.
the best teacher at NHCC, need I say more... took both classes...
He was an awesome teacher. He gives fair points and extra credits for attending the pow wow! I love him, he has a weird sense of humor, but still funny. Great at what he does.
He is a fun and interactive instructor. He offers many extra-credit options and has a easy paced class. He also adds a quirky sense of humor to the class, which makes the college learning environment less tense.
Good teacher enjoys what he does and it shows.
He's such an amazing professor, but wasn't interested in Athro. as much as I thought I would be. But he made it fun!
Very friendly, and always willing to help students. Very funny- would make many jokes... and the students would actually laugh at them! Class attendance was constantly full- he was a very engaging teacher. Highly recommended, if you can get a seat in his class, that is!
Silas is awesome! Always very willing to help students with whatever. Very lenient and understanding. Course work was relatively low and if you ever had questions the professor was very willing to help! I would definitely recommend this class!
Good teacher and very knowledgeable about the subject. He gives out extra credit opportunities when there are events going on at school, such as earth week, etc. Tests are quite difficult but he does tend to add bonus points to the test. Notes are available on D2L, and you can take quizzes unlimited times on D2L, which is a major plus.
It was a really interesting class. The professor's passion for the subject made it even more fun! Tests are quite difficult, but not impossible. I loved this class!
BEST TEACHER IN NHCC! I LOVED THE CLASS SO MUCH! he is soo funny i say as long as you read the book and study for the exams its an easy A! I totally recommend taking his class YOU WILL LOVE IT!
You have to read the book and his class is extremely fun. He is a great teacher and I would reccommend him to anyone that is interested in Anthropology
A good teacher that's knowledgable about what he's teaching. Makes the class fun with his sense of humor. Tests are difficult, need to read the book at times to know the materials on the tests.
I really enjoyed his class. He's a funny teacher and he makes class interesting. I would recommend taking him again for another anthro class. The only thing hard about his class were the exams but he usually curve them so you can still manage a B in his class as long as you attend lecture and take notes.
Anthropology of Religions course was great. You have to do the reading to keep up with class discussion, but if he offers this course again in the future, I HIGHLY recommend it for anyone that has any interest in religions or other cultures. Dr Mallery makes class fun, relaxed, and open to talk about anything really.
Super good instructor and very approachable. Very respectable and accepting of different people. He loves to teach his subject and keeps the class interested. I do recommend him.
I took this class just because... and it was awesome! Dr. Mallery makes it very fun and engaging. He is rather funny, isn't afraid of colorful language, and very knowledgeable of the content. This is a class where I WANTED to be there every day! I wish I wasn't graduating this semester- I'd deeply consider staying in school just for his classes!
Dr. Mallery is very knowledgeable in his area of studies. He has a great sense of humor that makes class fun. Although his exams can be tough, going to class and listening through lectures help a lot. I suggest that students go see him often just for help or to know their grade because it can be a struggle if you're falling behind in class.
Take notes in class and pay attention and you will do fine. He is very helpful and kind and provides many examples. He is also very funny and easily keeps class interesting
I got an A in the class. He offers a lot of extra credit which is nice and his exams are pretty easy. He is the only anthropology teacher at NHCC, so it's good that he is actually a decent teacher. However, he is very very unorganized.
Insanely handsome! amazing interest in subject! only problem is his lack of responsibility and helpfulness. we were suppose to have 2 presentations,2 papers, 2 tests,2 note checks, and grades for participation. all we did was 2 papers and 2 presentations cause he "forgot" about the others. plus most all my emails remain unanswered. never again!
Dr. Mallery was awesome! Take notes and pay attention and you will get an A easily. Favorite class so far at NHCC! I also recorded his classes on my phone and would use them to review before the test, very helpful!
Tests are extremely tough. Listen hard and TAKE NOTES. All of his tests are off what he says. Very funny professor and made class interesting and fun.
Dr. Mallery has a very sarcastic personality which makes for good lectures that can have a fun, comedic tone. His tests are mostly lecture based, so if you miss class make sure to have a buddy borrow you their notes or you'll be missing out on some important test questions! I would definitely take another class with Silas Mallery!
I loved his lectures, never missed a day. His lectures are essential to passing the class. He is very approachable if you have questions or need help. There aren't many assignments and he offers several extra credit options.
He is one of the hardest professors at North Hennepin Community College. His tests are hard, but his class is based on a curve. I failed all but one test and took advantage of every extra credit opportunity that was available. Read the book, show up to class EVERDAY, and take good notes.
Silas Mallery's class was very engaging. He made the lectures easy to understand as well as relevant to the students, creating a fun environment, even when the topics were depressing.
The class was super hard but he's willing to help. He offers a ton of extra credit, which is what saved me. I passed all of the exams with C's or D's but recieved a good grade overall. There's barely any homework but it's a heavy note taking class.
Fantastic professor, very kind and eager to help his students. I genuinely enjoyed his class. Tests are based off of the material he discusses in lecture, so don't skip class, record every lecture, and stop by his office if you need anything clarified.
He is a tough grader but make sure you talk to him about everything he will understand especially since I am not the most brilliant student among everyone. Anyhow, ask questions, read the material, you should be able to past the course. Another factor there isn't to much homework throughout the course. Good luck.
Great teacher! Many students attending his class because they need a science credit but he makes everything fun. Best lectures and discussions! Regular homework and tests so assignments are easy to anticipate, no surprises.
Amazing professor! He is a teacher who works hard to see all of his students succeed. He's very entertaining so it keeps the lectures interesting. You must show up to class to do well in this class. There are online quizzes based from the book but other than that you'll never use your book and the tests come straight from lecture.
hes a legend
Absolutely the best professor I've had. He responds to emails in a timely manner and has the students best interests at heart. He doesn't stick to the syllabus however so make sure you go to class and pay attention.
He knows how to keep lecture interesting. He doesnt take attendance, but it is important to show up because he doesnt always follow the syllabus. He is very passionate and knows what he is talking about
I really enjoyed Silas, he was a great professor He was so open to learn so much from his students, and his teaching style is really helpful. He creates an open space for students to express themselves. The subjects are interesting, and he makes it his responsibility to treat cultures with respect. He's the reason why I'm majoring in Anthropology.
Dr Mallery is a good lecturer and wants the class to be interesting and engaging. He grades on an extreme curve sometimes, which can bump you up an entire letter grade depending. He's accessible and wants you to succeed. You do have to study though, and pay close attention to his lectures. Take notes !!! You won't do well if you don't.
He is a good lecturer and wants the class to be interesting and engaging. He grades on an extreme curve sometimes, which can bump you up an entire letter grade depending. He really wants you to succeed. You would have to make sure that you pay close attention to his lectures. Make sure you take good quality notes, and you will pass this class
Absolutely amazing teacher. This was not a subject I was jnterested in AT ALL, but he actially made it fun and I ended up enjoying it. His tests are tough and critical to a good grade, but if you listen during lectures and take good notes you should be fine. He is fun to losten to and is very understanding.
Great Prof! He care about you passing. Lecture is fun! Would take him again. Actually learned a lot! Took him for Intro to Anthropology. I overwhelmed myself by taking to many credits but I was still able to pass.
A good class to take. I took the night class, and his exams are about what he lectured about. He also hands back papers and allows you to fix it up and give it back to him. Also the online test you can take as many times as you want. And if you miss one sooner or later he opens it back up again. He also has extra credit, I suggest you do them.
The class itself is difficulty but Professor Mallery is there to help you out. His lectures are long but he makes it up by being hilarious. There is a paper that you would have to write. It has to be 4-6 pages long and if you talk to him he will help you out as much as he can.
Dr. Mallery, is a very good person that want you to pass his class. lectures are fun and time go by fast. He can be hilarious. I would take his class with him again. If you stay focus you will pass his classes.
He was a great teacher, but the classroom was too hot and quiet that I couldn't focus.
Silas is hilarious he makes learning fun. His lectures go by fast because he really gets the class engaged . I really was interested in the class and am glad I took it. It wasn't super easy but I still ended with a decent grade. He loves participation fyi so speak up in class.
Really great! lectures are interesting and test questions come directly from them. However don't forget about online quizzes on D2L and a short paper he mentions once or twice and was a bit vague about the due date.
Mallery, Silas is the best teacher ever. His exams are hard but if you take good notes and study from it you will be okay. His interesting, and his lectures aren't boring.
Dr. Silas is one of the best professors I have had in my life. He is hilarious and very easy going. He makes going to this class enjoyable and I look forward to it every week. I would recommend going to class though as he has information from the lectures on the tests.
Nice guy and all but makes you read a lot and buy expensive textbooks, btw more then 3 textbooks . And its just a easy class but he makes it hard with his 50 question exams , essay and buying those expensive textbooks.
I took cultural anthropology he was an okay teacher nice and very interesting lectures. however he was very disorganized and the tests/exams were set up for someone who had been studying anthropology for a while not a student. his class required 4 books and were expensive. multiple different tests, exams, and quizzes. i'd give him a 7 out of 10.
Dr. Mallery is most likely one of the best professors on campus. Hes helpful, gives good feedback, and is passionate about anthropology. Hes very understanding and just wants you learn. If you have a question, he wont mind explaining things to you, making him very approachable. I would definitely take his class again with no hesitation.
I absolutely LOVE Dr. Mallery! He is so supportive, and there when you need help but make sure you show up for lecture! A lot of what he says is taught IN CLASS so be sure to show up and take notes. He is a real crowd pleaser with a few corny jokes but worth the laugh!
I took 2 of Dr. Mallery's classes and loved him. His classes were the only classes that I truly wished I could've taken in person (COVID). He is someone who has a perfect balance of making class fun and also informative. He is a fair grader and as long as you do the work you should have no problem. Approachable and cares about students. Recommend!
I took his course online and he is never specific on what he wants for assignments or when it is due. His page online is a bit difficult to navigate so youll find difficulty there. He gives the syllabus at the beginning of the term and grades most of the work the last few days of the term, so dont expect grades right away.
I took 2 classes with Dr. Mallery and he was amazing, still one of my favorite professors. Tests are harder than one might expect but honestly if you attend lectures and take notes they aren't that daunting.
Good class. Lots of videos to watch and write about but super manageable. I would just say to try and be timely with everything and if you need help or want to make up something is usually cool about it and responds fast. Seems like a nice guy. Good experience
Good guy, coming into lectures I was pretty excited to learn something new. Jokes around to make the class a little more fun.
This professor does a great job in making his lectures fun and the tests are easy as long as you take good notes. However, he does fall behind on schedule a lot which makes the deadline for papers and quizzes unspecified. I still recommend him if you plan on taking an Anthropology class. Also, he does give out extra credit!
Honestly the BEST class I've taken. Its a fun & mind opening class (actually) It was truly the most profound learning experience and opened my perspective and worldview on everything. 10000% recommend taking!
Dr. Mallery is very invested in student success. This is much more apparent in a smaller class like Anthropology of Religion where his passion for his students and the subject matter shines through. Specifically, during office hours, he gave wonderful insight that helped me find more than enough to write about in my papers for class.
This class is very thought provoking and interesting, the professor also makes the class very engaging since he has a big sense of humor and is very caring. It is lecture heavy and the tests are based on what is said during these lectures. But overall awesome class! The readings are just as interesting as well.
Professor Mallery is very respectful and gives great lectures if you are someone who will attend class and like to learn new things everyday this is for you! Some students find him funny but some don't but I think it's because they're uptight because he is hilarious, he is a bit disorganized on D2L but is extremely flexible with due dates. 10/10
Professor Mallery is very respectful and gives great lectures if you are someone who will attend class and like to learn new things everyday this is for you! he is hilarious, he is a bit disorganized on D2L but is extremely flexible with due dates. I even took ANTH 1010 and 1020 back to back and loved it! 10/10
Professor Mallery is a great professor who cares about his student a lot. He makes lecture enjoyable by cracking jokes regarding stuff being taught in class.
As much as people think he's a great Prof. I don't agree with how he does classes. He uses 3 hr long lectures, not great with organizing, speaks in long tangents so you'd need to speed it up. He does NOT answer emails on time so you'd need to visit him in person. (Almost dropped this class but need it to pass goals)
The professor is considerate and easygoing. Lectures are long videos mostly images so I recommend using captions. He is slightly disorganized on D2L and email but seems active in person. He is very accommodating of deadlines and allows revisions/retakes. Overall pretty easy grader. He always offers extra credit and honors!
