A lot of options for final essay, straightforward midterm, interesting and funny lectures. Gives you a lot of help on the essay and freedom to choose topics.
bad lecture
Prof Guzzo is the smartest man ever. He went to Harvard and Oxford, and tells his students of society in the modern day so well. Almost everything he says is so inspiring and I actually learned more in this class than any other class even though it was my elective. Midterm and exam is straight from textbook so MEMORIZE THE TEXTBOOK if you want an A
Extremely hard marker, but ironically his feedback on my essay had more spelling and grammatical errors than the essay itself. His lectures are useless. He makes jokes, flies through the slides, cancels classes, and then tells you you'll fail if you study the lecture slides. Textbook is a must have for the exams. Avoiding Guzzo in future.
This is such an inspirational prof. Even though he doesn't teach much of the actual content on the exams in class (he even tells you to study the textbook), you learn so much about how society works, like things you never really thought about even though it's been there the whole time. He's hilarious and mostly talks about his own experiences
All he does in class is talk about his own experiences and generalized opinions. He only states facts that support his biased opinion and doesn't really teach. He never mentions the textbook in class but his exams are heavily based on them. The group essay is incredibly stupid and he believes that google is a good place to find academic information
The lectures are useless considering that the exams are based 100% on the textbook and all he does during lecture is talk about his own experiences. my advice would be skip class and read the textbook like the bible and you'll get an easy A. He also takes forever to grade papers, some people still didn't have their grades after the final exam.
Takes up random 5 lecture attendance worth 5%. Talks nonstop about his own experiences. Barely talked about the topics in the book. MUST READ THE BOOK. Do not rely on his lectures, maybe go to class if you're bored and want to see him use MS paint.
I took this class because of reviews saying Guzzo was an amazing prof and how this course was easy. I am an average student with a full course load and this class is NOT easy. Do not take it as an elective if you're trying to boost your GPA. My lowest mark.. His ppts are useless, read the textbook, but even then the exam makes 0 sense.
The man literally forgot to print 500 exam papers on exam day! He literally canceled right before the exam. How does a prof forget to print exams???????? smh
I took this course thinking that it was an easy course and the concept was easy but Guzzo made no snese at all. He is pretty funny but all he does is talk about his life and useless things. He takes attendance 5 times randomly so you kinda have to go cuz it counts towards your grade. Overall hes a nice guy but not worth taking it for the marks.
Chill lower liberal. Five percent of your mark is attendance (taken randomly) and there is a midterm, group paper, and final exam. All were pretty easy, read the textbook for exams and don't rely on his slides for A. Will see you outside of class to talk about your paper and group concerns. Start on your group paper asap as it will creep up on you.
Only two of the questions from the exam were based on lecture material. The rest was all from the textbook. Classes are always cut short which is good, but all the exam questions came from minuscule details from the textbook.
2 tests, 1 essay, and 5% attendance marks. The course is interesting, however the lectures aren't correlated with the questions. Lectures are practical and the tests are purely theoretical, so a textbook is a must. An okay prof overall.
Not really much from the lectures covered on the exams which is kinda frustrating come exam time. Group project being worth 1/3 of the grade also is such a gamble and can negatively affect marks.
Literally the worst. Sucks how they only have one prof teaching this course in Chang school. Never failed a course in my life and this was the first time in my 4 years of nursing (and my program is HARD). Marks the essays so hard to the point where i think he didnt even read them and just gave out marks because he kept forgetting to mark it.
Mark Breakdown is midterm 30%, paper 30%, final 35%, attendance 5%. Lectures can get off topic so you need to read the textbook for the details of the concepts. The paper is based off a topic of your choice and the due date corresponds to the week that topic was covered in class. He's a tough marker for essays but the final was good.
He gives very forward feedback, which I can really appreciate. Not a huge course load and the exams were not too difficult. He is a very engaging lecturer but is very strict with his rules! Hand stuff in on time!
Good prof. His lectures were actually interesting and I enjoyed going to them since hes really chill. Got an A on the paper, dont think he marked it that hard like someone else said.
His lectures are kinda boring but he is a good prof. Midterm and final are based on textbook dont do slides. Takes participation in class, just a sign in sheet for 5%. Group projects are simple just an essay. He is approachable and if you need extra credit he helps you out! take him easy A
Professor Guzzo actually made me wanna go to class! Super chill guy, and a pretty interesting course. Just make sure to do the paper on time!! The midterm and final are pretty much fully on the textbook
Awesome Professor. Loved going to his class he made every topic interesting. Would definitely recommend taking this course. Easy A minimum effort just show up and pay attention in class. Only a midterm exam, midterm paper, 5% attendance mark and exam that wasn't cumulative so basically a second midterm.
Really nice Professor. Jokes around. You have fun time in his class. You are graded through a final exam, one midterm, and an essay. I would suggest you to take him for SOC 103.
Super chill course. Guzzo is a great prof and he made every topic interesting. Hes funny and genuinely cares for and understands his students. Make sure to read the textbook chapters in order to do well on the midterm and final exams and do not leave the paper until last minute!! Definitely recommend taking this course with professor Guzzo!!
To be honest he was a really chill, easy prof. I enjoyed class time and the course content was easy to follow. Got a 90 on the exam but he marked SUPER HARD for essays which made no sense. Got 10% taken off for slightly going over word count and had really specific guidelines for format. Would not want to write that essay again but class was fun.
He's a really great professor, a lot of the reviews on him are a bit unfair. His lectures are fun and he's an interesting guy to listen to. I put minimum effort into this class and it wasn't too difficult. The midterm and final exams were fair and the essay wasn't too hard just make sure you follow his guidelines so you don't lose easy marks.
as a first year i experienced pretty bad profs for 4/5 courses i took this semester. even though my grade isnt the best, sal was definitely the best prof i had this semester. he's very engaging and gives 5% for attendace! i didn't take SOC103 seriously becasue it was an easy elective and i had way harder courses to get through lol
Prof Guzzo is really great. Dont get what all the fuss is about since you can do really well by just studying from his slides. The concepts require common sense. Make sure to pay attention to the videos in class or at least watch them since some questions on the exam are based on them. Follow his guidelines for the essay and youd have a fun time.
Dr. Guzzo is a great professor in my opinion. Hes well versed in what he teaches and hes quite funny too, so he makes the lectures engaging and fun. Course is easy to do well on as long as you actively read the textbook and know the course material. He is particular on the essays however, but overall a good prof. I loved this class!
Guzzo's really good in my opinion, and is a totally fair prof. Just follow the advice he gives for papers and the exam (which is almost purely based on textbook content) and you will do fine. Marks very hard on papers, but the exam is easy if you just read the textbook. I learned loads from him. Funny guy with good life advice. Would take again.
Definitely bases the midterm and final on content not explicitly stated in the lecture ppts. Lots of questions on things he mentions briefly, or videos that he shows during class. The term paper (worth 30%) was graded very roughly, with minimal instruction or rubric guidelines. One upside is that the txb is online and free. (USE IT!)Not an easy A.
Guzzo is my favorite professor in Ryerson. His class is funny, even there is an attendance, but those are easy marks. Unlike those professors only know how to read a PowerPoint, Guzzo gave lots of his life experiences as examples in the class. And he knows how to talk, unlike those political correct professors. Take his class.
He is so funny during his lectures. Sometimes he does go off topic and doesn't finish his lectures but as long as you read the slides and the textbook, you will get a good grade. He is nice and approachable if you have a question. He just has a loud, eccentric personality which makes him appear rude but he is not.
He was extremely disorganized and didn't structure his classes or the semester at all. He didn't really respect accommodations (requests for extensions) and simply replied to students asking for them with "you should have started the paper earlier" and didn't grant the extension. Kinda problematic too, as well as repetitive!
He didn't know the difference between private and personal property, said poverty isn't socioeconomic, used the phrase "transgendered". He often goes on tangents and doesn't get through the actual course content and never uses the full class time. He's inconsistent with grades and rude to students. Never spellchecks his slides or announcements.
Grade A student here. Switch out of his class if you can. Doesn't respond to emails. Midterm is very hard and he marks the one essay terribly. Not open to discussion or different opinion, very boomer like. He's funny but definitely not a quality professor. Two attendance checks. Trust me: switch out of his class.
Guzzo is one of the most disorganized professors. On two occasions he delivered the same lecture twice because he forgot he already did it. Although the class content is incredibly simple, and an easy grade it was not enjoyable. He made nothing easier or helped accommodating during the switch to online class format. I do not recommend
Arrogant Prof. Don't take this prof for SOC 103. His lectures are useless and are nothing like whats in the textbook. He just babbles on and on about stuff in the lecture not even for the course. Marks the essay really hard and it's worth 35%. If you do decide to take his course, please read the textbook or you won't pass the midterm or final.
The exams weren't too difficult, but they were also very irrelevant to the course material. If you memorize the textbook and his slides, you will do pretty well on the exams. He marked the paper quite harshly and wants you to explain straight forward ideas inside and out even though there's a short word limit. I like his lectures though :)
Go to his class for the attendance. Exams are heavily based on 2 textbooks (find both at library)! Slides are only useful for the graphs which he quizzes on.
He thinks he's really funny and he makes offensive jokes. In a class full of future social workers, it really surprised me to hear them laugh at some of the jokes he made. He doesn't really use the textbook but the midterm and final are pretty much all from the textbook. They aren't too hard though. Essay was marked very weirdly. Not the best prof.
One of my worst profs. Barley teaches relevant content during lectures that will help on assessments. There was a paper, a midterm and a final exam (plus bonus marks for attendance). Exams were all MC but very hard. Most of the questions were not taught in class & instead were from textbook. Works seems simple & do-able at first, but really isnt.
not the worst prof i've ever had but certainly not the best. I found that attending class truly wasn't useful considering most of the exam questions are pulled from the textbook rather than the lectures. not a tough grader. if you read the textbook and put in a decent amount of effort, you'll do fine.
His lectures are interesting. Slides have stats often. I heard he was unfair to other students. But overall, a good prof. The essay and midterm was fairly easy, so was the exam.
I expect more compassion and social awareness from a sociology prof. He also doesn't seem to care about the wellbeing of his students, in my experience. If you have the option between him and another prof, I'd say go with the other one.
He made us buy a $90 textbook for this course (no PDF version online anywhere), just to write the first quiz. The next lecture (week 4), he tells us we are now done with this book, and we should sell it on kijiji or something. Made us purchase a book for $90, used it for 2 weeks and is telling us we should sell it now.... unbelievable
He does not care about his students. He repeated many questions on the midterm, doesn't spellcheck his announcements, his course outline has no dates and is disorganized. If you ask him a question he is very vague and very unapproachable. He does nothing to help you get good grades on tests or to understand what he includes on tests. Good luck.
Unfortunately, professor Guzzo is one of the worst professors I've had at Ryerson. His lectures are long and boring, you will have hours of textbook reading, and when you email him, his responses are incredibly dry and rude. His tests are also difficult and confusing and he always sounds bored. Don't take his class if you don't have to.
this guy isnt encouraging at all. his responses to emails are straight up cold and not helpful. the class is SO boring too
HONESTLY take this course if you want to fail. This is the worst professor in my whole life. I am genuinely interested in sociology but after what I experienced in this course... I will never want to hear sociology ever again. Please save yourselves and take any course in ryerson or the world except for this one. He's honestly a -10/10
He was so chill and SUCH an easy marker. I think we got it easier this semester because we didn't have to go do any interviews because of covid. No zoom lectures, all pre-recorded. Take him if you can! We had it way easier than the other students with different profs
Don't take this class if you are looking for an easy liberal. He marks super hard and his tests are confusing. Doesn't even return back the question with right answer. Marks essays super hard too.
I do not recommend this prof. His lectures are long, he is unfiltered and doesn't care to be respectful about course materials and people when referring to social class and inequality. He is unprofessional. His tests are only based off the textbooks. You can find the answers in the textbook, but somehow still do bad. Avoid this prof at all costs!
Worst professor EVER! I highly recommended avoiding him at all cost! He is not kind, and rude to students whoever asks him a question. His tests are confusing, and marks really hard on assignments. He also doesn't teaches during online classes, and makes you do by watching his video your own time. I suggest looking for a better professor than him.
He gives feedback in the rudest ways possible and isn't very accommodating. However, he puts good effort into the material he teaches, I just think he should teach it in a different way because EVERYTHING is pre-recorded. I stopped watching lectures within the 3rd week of school. There were 3 tests, 1 essay, NO other marks, making it hard.
My biggest issue is that the wording of the questions on the tests is very confusing, and you won't know what you got wrong. This prof also seems very rude from what I've heard, but I never personally communicated w/ him. The course content was interesting in my opinion. Read the textbook if you wanna do well. And start the essay in advance
Avoid if you can. He made us buy a $100 textbook for us to only read about 3 chapters of it. The test is based solely on this book so if you dont buy it good luck. He also seemed quite rude and condescending in his announcements. Essay was easy to complete though. A lot of reading for a class that is taken as a liberal & his lectures were no help
honestly I would've gave him 0/10 on all criteria but this site does not allow me to do so... 0/10 is pretty generous as well. The tests usually cover 3-4 chapters (each chapter usually has 40-50 pages). The questions are confusing on the test. This course really made me think of going into medical, cause its probably easier than this course.
He's unaccommodating and rude in his announcements, email replies and lectures. He is a good lecturer but the exams are based on the textbooks. The exams themselves are a mess as he tries to stress you out by saying that you only have so many minutes to answer a question even though it looks like he made the exam last minute. Avoid him if you can.
His responses to emails? Rude. His exams? Messy, poorly worded, and not based on the lecture content. His lectures? Boring and taught in a way that's borderline offensive. My GPA? Not great, thanks to this one class.
tbh he must have filmed all the lectures in the summer and then went on vacation bc he posts all course material at the beginning, and is virtually inaccessible for the rest of the semester. I can't say the course material was difficult, he is just a lazy and indifferent teacher. you're gonna be teaching yourself a course (videos+readings provided)
One of the worst profs I ever had. Thats it, thats the review. Period
SSH301 is definitely much easier online than it is in person, so marking definitely seemed more lenient. Prof Guzzo seems intimidating but will help you should you need it and is very clear cut with his instructions. He marks fairly and gives you feedback that will definitely help you with future assignments. Only con is asynchronous teaching.
Horrible prof! First of all, this prof doesn't even reply back to emails. Secondly, he marks so hard. I would highly suggest switching to another prof that actually cares for their students and that actually replies back to emails like they're supposed to. Overall, avoid him at all costs.
easiest ssh301 prof! marks really easy and is very chill. group projects beginning to end.
Despite many negative reviews, I think prof guzzo isn't awful! He gives feedback if you ask and responds to emails within 1-2 days. everything is pre-recorded. lectures are a little long but straightforward, same thing with tests (based on textbook). he's straightforward with you and blunt, not rude tbh. still enjoyed the class
Just run. Do not take a class with this prof. Incredibly rude, inaccessible outside of class, all lectures are prerecorded and just him reading off the slides, and the ENTIRE MARK is a group project where all members get the same grade. He gives the "option" of doing it by yourself, but it's such a massive project that doing it alone is impossible.
Should not be allowed to teach. So messy so unclear and just does not know how to teach properly. Super rude to the students and half the things he says does not make sense. The formatting of our quizzes is horrible and I just would suggest anyone and everyone to skip on taking a class with him.
Absolutely worst prof ever. He is so rude and lacks engagement with his students. He does not care about his students in the course. He drops a 4 hour video and expects us to know about it on a test. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS.
It was not that difficult. You do have to read quite a bit and you have to listen to lectures, but it's straightforward. The tests are a bit tricky with wording, even when I knew the answers I was often confused. It was interested and I learned a lot. In lecture, he is very blunt. I found him amusing, but I can see how ppl find him offensive.
class was fully online as he uploaded pre-recorded videos and lecture slides. Uploaded them all so you could go ahead if needed. Everyone in this class complained so much about him but he wasn't bad at all and they just kept finding things to find offensive when it really wasn't and what he was saying was factual. People too soft #2021. he was good
Listen Up to the truth: He is a bad teacher ... he does not have lectures ... and his tests are very difficult ... But i gave him a 2/5 because I was at a C and he boosted me to a B- ... he is also very rude when you email him ... I would say avoid this prof ... But props to a very rude prof for actuall giving me a mark boost and not my peers ...
It was an interesting class to say the least. Our entire mark was based on 100%group work. I didnt really mind it but the prof didnt give back constructive feedback he was just put elipsies all over the paper. -unprofessional -rude - clearly could care less
Professor Guzzo is a hard grader and give's harsh non-constructive feedback on essays. He did not offer office hours and told students to email him only if mandatory and to post questions/concerns. His tests are unpredictable, definitely study more from the textbook but pay attention to the examples he talks about in lectures as well. Good luck!
One of the worst prof Ive ever had. Lecture videos were over 40 minutes and he was not overall helpful. He was really rude towards responding to students. Tough grader and feedback makes no sense. One of my lowest marks. AVOID HIM AT ALL COSTS!!
in all honesty professor guzzo was THE worst prof ive ever had in my entire life. he does not give proper feedback, makes the course difficult when it really does not need to be. its really saying something if all his reviews are this bad. dont take his class ever. like seriously dont.
The tests are easy if you study his lectures and lecture slides. He is a little rude/harsh in his replies to students' questions, if anything he is very straightforward. He could come across as a mean guy at first but the class is really not too hard. His replies to your questions will make you feel stupid for asking
He is one of the best tbh . Easy tests , and a fine grader , I personally enjoyed his teaching method
No extra hwk other than 3 exams and a paper. Exams are very textbook based so make sure you read and make notes, lectures are more for helping to understand, but videos he asks you to watch are also tested so don't ignore that. The course is an easy A if you read the textbooks in general, and he has a very straightforward teaching style.
He uses tricky words in his tests. Also his lectures are boring. The most useful material is his slides. Tips for exam is studying all the slides and key terms in the book.
posted lectures prerecorded & u watched them whenever u had time, afterwards, u read the textbook & that's it, the readings are just kinda annoying lol lectures are rly long too so be ready for that tests weren't terrible as long as you went over the material he seems like a pretty tough marker on the paper but gave a package to help so use it
Guzzo was the worst prof I have ever had. Seems to derive pleasure from intimidating first year students. First class, he spews some crap about how if you dont do the readings or come to lecture, you will not pass. I did not go to one of his "lectures" and didn't do most readings and I got an A. Whats shocking is this man is allowed to teach.
Just a rude guy all around, I dropped early on. Just switch out and take another elective, his tests were weird, only got like a 71 and studied pretty hard. Way too hard for an elective and he marks paper hard.
Avoid him at all cost. His tests are super weird.
One of the most rudest professors ever. He thinks he is superior and makes that known. He feeds off of making students overwhelmed and miserable. There are plenty other professors and courses you can take to fulfill this liberal. Do yourself a favour and run from any course that is taught by the last name "Guzzo". You are welcome.
Tests were confusing, with way too much textbook used throughout the course. Hard grader, essay was marked super hard as well.
Honestly he's not that bad of a prof as people make him out to be. His exams are 90% based on the textbook, so if you read it and understand key concepts you'll do great. His exams aren't difficult at all, you just gotta study. However, his grading criteria for the essay is a pain and he marks super tough on the essay.
guzzo has this weird thing with wanting to intimidate first years - goes on about not giving out "free" marks: typically just an excuse to mark things hard. lectures drag on and i don't feel like i really learn anything attending them. just read the textbook and study for the multiple choice quizzes and you'll probably do ok - but avoid if possible
He's a pretty good prof. His lectures are engaging and he's a nice guy. Grades are made up of 3 tests and 1 essay. He's pretty fair with the essay marking. He won't go easy but if you put in the effort it'll be fine. His tests are VERY textbook heavy so read the assigned chapters. He isn't an easy A but I still would recommend him.
Had Guzzo online but was in person after reading week. The switch to in person was great, he seemed like a better prof. Encouraged participation but didn't force it. No need to come to class slides are online, but he doesn't just read off of them. No need to read the textbook. Overall, great prof but I understand the criticism he's getting on here
There was an online to in-person switch. During the online portions, it was at a learn at your own speed pace but once in person we would go over the week's slides in a class. He may seem intimidating at first but once you're in your in-person lectures it's definitely a blast and he's very funny. I would definitely recommend him for SOC104.
Don't recommend taking a course with this prof. He is an extremely tough grader for the essay and doesn't give useful feedback. His tests are really weird, they have a lot of grammatical errors and questions that make no sense. His tests include content from his lectures, textbook, and videos he asks you to watch. so make sure to review those.
Before switching back to in-person, he was pretty intimidating online but in-person he was more engaging and a little funny. His tests are mostly textbook-based so study from those. They're also worded very weirdly so beware of that. He also marks the essay very hard as well and his feedback wasn't useful.
so rude. thinks he's better than everyone. also thinks he's a grammar teacher. don't even know how he is a prof, deffo don't recommend him as a prof. such a hard marker as well and his tests make no sense at all. literally had to drop this class cause I couldn't stand him or his assignments.
Guzzo was honestly very rude and some stuff he said in class was all out disrespectful. His tests are heavy on the overall concepts and connections to theories, but are riddled with so many grammar errors and sometimes, even copy and pasted from the internet. In terms of the paper, just follow what he wants. I got a good grade by just ignoring him
Very ignorant teacher. Rude.
v educated and nice prof, HOWEVER, incredibly hard to ask questions or debate points without being shut down in a very "talk to the hand" way. Shuts down students who offer other opinions + ask questions about the topic. He uses the same 3 stories every class, + has some questionable views, which some students may find frustrating/irritating
This man is a nightmare prof. Says controversial things (often about women) and then basically tells you to shut up if you get upset. Also just an incredibly boring speaker with nonsensical slides. He could condense his 3 hour lectures into 20 minutes if he would just stop talking about himself for like a minute. AVOID at all costs
Lectures were pre-recorded and dry. Absolutely no need for the textbook. Exams are worded very bizarrely, but were fair, I guess, plus he curves up a bit. Start early on the essay and utilize the numerous resources/examples he provides. He explicitly tells you what he's looking for/not looking for, so there's honestly no reason you can't pull an A.
barely showed up to the lectures and just copied down the slides (a lot of the slides were just overly explained stats & examples). I didn't read the textbook & any questions on the test that were related to the textbook were easy to google. The UP documentaries had the worst audio quality & had no subtitles & the tests had a lot of the same qs
Very disrespectful... overall not a teacher at all. He seems very spiteful about his own life, and does not value women, children or people of color. Displayed in his consistent values of dehumanizing these social groups. Once said that the woman who made his tim hortons coffee was a failure in life. Also feedback on work is useless
The entire course is based on a 40-45 page group report, so make sure you don't end up with idiots like I did or your grade will suffer/you will do all the work. He is super easy and you never have to go to class. I wouldn't say avoid, but don't expect him to give a f when you have shitty group members. Not a nice person, disrespectfully.
Only thing you need to do is to write a research paper w your group, sounds easy but its horrible cux group works are the worst. On top of that he doesn't give clear instructions and is not organized enough. Overall, horrible experience.
While he's a bit harsher around the edges, as long as you are respectful in his class he won't give you a hard time about anything. There are 3 tests that are all online and open book (timed), and a final essay. I suggest starting the essay at the beginning of the semester to get it out of the way so you don't have to focus on it later.
I can't give him a one. I think as a professor he's actually pretty good. The class is laid out for your success. He's transparent. He meets deadlines. His assignments are super detailed. His feedback is helpful. But every lecture feels like a 2 hour microaggression, it's uncomfortable. Skip lecture, do the content, you'll do fine in the class.
such an easy course. barely studied. mostly repetition from Kelly Train's SOC 111 class and the rest is like common knowledge, easy to guess for the tests. Train's class was much more engaging and informative. him as a person is okay... but he is questionable from a social work perspective... sometimes rambles on, thinks he's funny but not really
Lectures could probably be 20 mins long without all the tangental fluff - can't say I was expecting to learn about the pressurization system of a jet aircraft in a sociology lecture, but here we are! Tests seem to be more based on "were you paying attention" and not "did you actually learn anything", but were overall very easy.
His approach to teaching is questionable. He does not care much about it, but deep down i think he wants his students to succeed? Regarding his teaching, he uses his outdated thinking and bias in lectures to conclude and justify his thinking. I heard he isn't really accessible outside of class. He is brutally honest (mainly rude) in his feedback.
Professor Guzzo may come off to some as "rough around the edges," but he is very knowledgeable and caring for his students. If you put in the effort and attend lectures, the course will be easy and enjoyable.
Didn't attend class as we often got sidetracked. Didn't read the textbook, just paid attention to the slides and put effort into the paper. Tests were pretty easy if you were prepared. He can be controversial at times (another reason some do not attend classes) but ultimately he's alright. Would take it again, he's a pretty laid-back professor.
Had no sympathy when my group members and I emailed him that others in the group contributed NOTHING to the 30% research project. Tried giving us all ZERO out of spite. Emailed him again and magically got an 83%. Probably didn't wanna deal with us inevitably appealing the grade if he didn't change the mark. TAKE THIS COURSE WITH ANOTHER PROF!
Guzzo has not only not updated his lecture content since 1990 but he also hasn't educated himself on how to conduct himself in the classroom appropriately. If you're a woman and enjoy being told to stock up on toilet cleaner because it's all you're good for then this is the man for you! Good luck understanding his poor grammar.
Awesome prof
Want a headache for the entirety of your lecture? then this is the prof for you! Guzzo has VERY[emphasis] outdated ways, and uses colourful language when referring to poc (ex. "blacks" & "aboriginals"). Additionally, he believes that women don't have a genuine passion for stem and the trades, as they "only do it" to disprove. He also cuts ppl off.
Guzzo is incredibly unprofessional and uses disrespectful language to refer to women, and other minority groups (ironic considering its a sociology course). His lectures are very outdated and his responses to emails are very cold, dismissive and won't answer your question. I have never met a more disrespectful professor, please avoid him if you can
I genuinely don't understand why Guzzo gets so much hate. He explains the concepts very clearly and uses real-life examples to help with your understanding. He is accessible outside of class and is quick at replying to emails. It's a sociology course, so obviously it's gonna be controversial, but he's a great professor and makes the lectures fun.
No relevant lectures. He goes on rampages, and shows racist videos. Tests have no correlation to the slides or lectures, so don't waste your time in going to those. Wrote a very strong essay reviewed by many and got a 55%. He curves. Save yourself academic probation.
Lectures are interesting and the slides are posted so you have the opportunity to go back and review the materiel afterwards lectures are explained well.
SOC is supposed to be an easy lower liberal course, and it is if you take any other teacher than Guzzo. He gives you 3 tests and 1 essay to write. Be prepared not to get anything lower than an 80 for those tests and don't think the essay will boost your mark coz it won't. He is an extremely hard marker when it comes to essays.
I don't know how he ended up teaching a Social Inequality class when he so blatantly has no respect for minorities or the lower class. Consistently talks bad about them during lectures speaks about how the upper class works harder. The marking for the essay is entirely based on his opinion, and if you don't agree with him he will fail you.
He teaches sociology by teaching sociology. People often attempted to go head-to-head with him in class because of disagreements. I honestly believe he was trying to teach controversial material the way it is. He talks A LOT he re-tells stories WEEKLY. I definitely heard the same three stories every week. Easy class though!
Professor was very unprofessional when it comes to grading. The feedback he leaves is so degrading, and turns you away from actually enjoying the course. Would not recommend if you want a good grade because he will not give it to you.
gives good feedback on essays to help you improve for when you have further essay to write lectures are interactive and content is explained in good depth.
Made a sexist comment encouraging the girls in the class to buy toilet bowl cleaner at walmart since it's on sale. in the first week. literally gives 0%, 20% etc on fully completed papers that def do not deserve it, and will not let you redo. takes 10000 years to mark papers. unprofessional and just disrespectful. hard no.
He makes offensive comments towards women, like how "the way women get treated is their fault because of how they present themselves" etc. He spent a whole class explaining why "race isn't real" as a white man. He grades work very unfairly. He made comments on the war in Gaza and did not allow students to say anything back, saying they were wrong.
In terms of teaching style I think he does quite well in making the content interesting, lots of personal stories. Overall I found him hilarious although at times (Not always) his humor is quite "Boomerish so I can understand that some might find offensive, in terms of material that he teaches it still seemed relatively unbiased. Easy course too.
VERY VERY VERY HARSH MARKER. Stick to his slides, you won't even need to go to his lectures. START THE ESSAY EARLY.
AWFUL. Attendance isn't mandatory, uses derogatory terms when speaking about minorities. Essay is marked really hard, feedback is useless example "who cares". He doesn't even know his own prompts listed for the essay. Tests have so many typos and wording is weird. Switch out of his class immediately.
WORST WORST WORST, Harsh Marking, is not lenient. Reading his slides helps for the exam, but for the essay, he will cut marks for no reason. Attendance is not mandatory. Would not recommend him.
The worst professor I have ever hard. Simply not fit to be a teacher, does not let students speak (and cuts them off), says misogynistic and offensive things, and is a tough grader just for the sake of being one (brags about giving out C's). Answers emails quickly but unprofessionally. Avoid at all costs!
One of the rudest professors I will probably ever meet. Disrespectful towards minorities and clearly holds resentment for the lower class. Will cut students off and tell them they're wrong when they're not. Will give you a 0 on the final essay if he disagrees with your points, even if you support with evidence. Tests are easy but not worth it.
He was alright. His tests were a bit hard.
Even though most people say awful things about his lectures, I really enjoyed and found his lecture discussions so interesting! It had three online mc exams and one essay. As my first essay in university, i got a 90% and found that shocking since he sometimes mentioned not being an easy grader.
he will fail you for the essay, if he doesn't agree with the pov you've chosen for your topic, don't bother emailing the guy in regards to that, he's not going to change your grade, has 3 tests and 1 essay, everything 25%, his lectures are just him blabbering and boasting, his old school viewpoint and ideologies.
this guy is weird. like just weird. he goes very off-topic during his lectures. course itself is easy but beware of the essay. choose a topic that is clear and not vague. he fails many student's essays so beware of that.
A professor that is very comfortable with making openly racist, misogynistic, classist, and otherwise bigoted comments towards his class, content, and the world in general. Will give you a low grade if he disagrees with you. Questions on tests are obviously copied from the internet. Avoid at all costs
Most of the lectures we had involved at least some kind of discussion on porn and circumcision. When demonstrating an example of a symbol, he used the confederate flag instead of any other opinion he could have. Grades papers seemingly based on whether or not he agrees on the viewpoint. Skips over any feminist theories, idk if he even likes his wife
I had Guzzo a few years ago and cried in frustration as I listened to this man make the most horrifying comments and comparisons with a clear intention of belittling students and exerting his power on us. Asking students to use sociology to explain why women are more likely to be "toilet cleaners" is just one of the phrases that stuck with me.
Guzzo is okay but he talks too much about porn. I'm sure other things are more important in the world than porn.
This professor embodies sexism & misogyny, belittling female perspectives. Overly fixated on pornography. Discussing his weight and personal issues openly. Absurdly comparing his childhood to the residential school system??? His behavior is entirely inappropriate, making the classroom feel uncomfortable & unsafe.
I had Guzzo this year for my soc class... This man was very questionable in the beginning and it got worse... This professor would have no problem with giving STRANGE examples to the class like "imagine doing ... with your sister" or telling stories of a baby getting their privates SHRIVELLED off. making a second rating...
I honestly don't understand the Guzzo hate, he is a good prof and actually makes the lectures interesting with his conversation. Though he may seem tough and strict at first, you'll come to realize its just him wanting you to do good in his class. As long as you put in good effort with your work and are smart with it, you'll do just fine.
Hard to believe there are still soc profs teaching who believe racism requires intent. He's easy enough to converse with, though, and the textbook he assigned was free.
This prof was not it. His ideas and beliefs are way off. He is a tough grader. I would not recommend him.
Uses outdated research to teach, ideas and examples used in class are outdated and questionable by today's standards. For the essay, pick a topic you think he will agree with and argue towards that and you will get an A. Tests are mostly from textbook, lecture slides and videos he assigns. Not a difficult course but annoying to be subjected to this
He makes Kelly Train look like a saint. He is misogynistic and obsesses over porn during lectures. Marks unfairly and I am unsure if he even reads the essays. Many students have complaints about his class and the way he teaches.
He is very rude and uses derogatory terms when it comes to minorities and women. He is a tough grader when it comes to essay, with useless feedbacks such as "who cares". If he disagrees with you he will give you a low mark, doesn't matter whether you wrote a good essay or not. My eager to learn in this class has disappeared due to how rude he is.
Tough grader. Not really a bird course. This course is nonsense, so much misogynistic and liberal progressive nonsense. Critical race theory and masculinity theory BS. Save your money and dignity by avoiding getting brainwashed by liberal sociologist theories that produce no real skill or knowledge. Geography is better.
He is amazing and great, he is a teacher.
Almost every lecture I've attended ended up with him talking about child pornography or minorities. I end up skipping lectures because I just can't bother wasting my time listening to something irrelevant. There is no excuse for being passive-aggressive towards students who pay money to learn.
Prof Guzzo's class was a bit of a mixed bag. Lectures could be hit-or-miss, but the essays were tricky. unstuck AI proved useful for prepping and staying on top of the material.
Guzzo is the most entertaining professor I've ever had. Honestly, he's a kind guy who looks out for his students. I promise you won't regret it if you take his class with an open mind!
His class was awful for the same reasons most people have listed but the paper was the worst. I worked hard and followed all requirements and was given degrading and unhelpful feedback that gave no actual suggestion as to how I could improve. I'm all for constructive criticism but that's definitely not what I got. Incredibly discouraging. AVOID!!
He says some questionable things a lot of the time, but he is a good professor and knows how to keep his lectures interesting.
very odd and questionable man...somehow in one lecture he brought up how "some women think they are prettier than they actually are". He should keep some thoughts to himself. Direct marker and tone deaf. Does not appear to be that passionate about his career, just here for a cheque.
There was 3 online tests and one essay worth 25% each. I skipped the essay and got a decent grade at the end. Easy class with interesting content and lectures.
Constant derogatory remarks against every and any minority. Test are nonsensical. Marks his essays hard for no good reason, leaves degrading comments that puts his students down instead of providing constructive feedback to show where you can improve. Uses racist and outdated examples. Has some weird obsession with porn and women cleaning toilets.
I have a love/hate relationship with this prof, his lectures are really funny and entertaining, he's not being offensive for the sake of being offensive but rather to make a point, his tests were online and pretty easy if you take notes in class you'll be fine but he's a really tough grader when it comes to the essay, take his advice and listen.
It was an interesting experience; aside from his sexist comments, he is a fair prof. He will give you the reality check most profs don't. The course has no final three tests and one paper, which was all online. Course material is fairly simple. Would recommend if you're looking for an easy A.
His lectures were lowkey funny and I think that some students just did not understand that he was trying to make a point. Tests were online and m/c and questions would often be crazy and would repeat. Essay grades varied heavily among students and many found their grades unfair. Try to avoid if you want an A or A+ instead of an A- or B+.
lectures interesting, the quizzes would vary depending on difficulty, he would repeat questions, made typos, used different fonts. I submitted a good essay(early too for a bonus mark) but he graded me unfairly, didn't give me my bonus mark and seemingly didn't read my essay I'm in his class again and he's using the same PowerPoints as last semester
Avoid at all cost. Take with Dr. Kelly Train, he marks the essay very hard
Horrible horrible horrible avoid him
There are a lot of bad reviews about him but he's honestly not a bad teacher. There is only 4 things being graded with online tests, 1 paper, and no exam. He speaks on issues passionately, but it all relates to the content and in sociology there are facts that are the harsh reality of the world. It doesn't make him a misogynist.
He grades his essay like he flips a coin and chooses if you'll do well or not. His comments are rude and if he doesn't agree with your opinion, your grade will reflect that. I thought he was kinda funny, but then it just gets so old when he re-uses stuff from his other classes and uses the same slideshow word for word as last sem. Waste of money.
Extremely rude comments in essay feedback. He marks really hard. You have to have evidence for every single thing you say in your essay or you'll get marks off. He's really rude. I would avoid.
Probably one of the worst profs I've had at TMU. He makes lectures painful with unprompted offerings of his opinion on non-relevant subjects, like how women shouldn't be in the army or talking about his 5 degrees. His wording in test questions is confusing even if you understand the material and no chance to bring your grade back up. Skip him.
The energy was not very pleasant and felt discouraging. Lectures were boring and his attitude made me and others uninspired. Provides blunt feedback. Reeks of casual misogyny.
let's just say that i hope that he gets his wish and is able to retire soon so that no other swp students have to suffer
I was forced by my program to take his class last sem, and when I saw that I had him again this sem I turned the shower to cold and cried. I used to like sociology a lot, but now it is my least favourite class and I will NEVER take it again. It's pretty clear that he is a smart guy who knows a lot about SOC but is not a good prof bc he doesn't care
I wouldn't recommend this class, even for free. The professor often shares unrelated personal stories, making lectures long and dull. He's unapproachable, lacks empathy, and doesn't tolerate mistakes one slip can mean a zero. He also makes questionable comments and seems closed off to other perspectives.
I wouldn't recommend this class, even if it was offered for free. The professor often shares unrelated personal stories, making lectures long and dull. He's unapproachable, lacks empathy, and doesn't tolerate mistakes one slip can mean a zero. He also makes questionable comments and seems closed off to other perspectives.
Not too difficult of a course, there's only 3 tests and 1 paper all worth 25% each. However, he is pretty rude and resuses the exact same slides from SOC111. He's pretty lazy professor who uses needlessly harsh feedback that isn't at all useful for future work. If this course wasn't mandatory, I would never have taken his class.
I had Guzzo for SOC 111, and he reuses the exact same slides, goes on the same rants about how Black people aren't oppressed and should stop using slavery as an excuse. I ended up skipping his classes as all his tests are online. I would avoid him at all costs. Its not hard to get a good grade without going to his classes.
He is a yapper, he loves to talk and rant about things. He is good over all and his tests are so easy love him!
Horrible prof, does not teach just reads off of slides, lectures are extremely boring, grades the essay hard if he does not personally agree with that you write about.
There are 3 online multiple-choice exams and 1 essay each worth 25%. Exams are poorly formatted; some questions appear twice or have the same answers in different wording, and the essay is graded with useless, unhelpful feedback. Lectures are dull since he reuses slideshows from SOC111 and makes tons of racist, misogynistic, queerphobic comments.
This professor is not a good professor. His slides are 5 years old and not updated, students are paying money for this prof to just reread what he wrote 5 years ago. 2) Prof in this class loves to talk to much and not teach the class. 3)
For a sociology professor at a progressive university, he frequently makes comments that come across as inappropriate and offensive. He yaps too much and detracts from the learning experience. You can do well in the class without attending lectures. I'm genuinely confused as to how he has remained in a teaching position for as long as he has.
He often made sexist and racist comments during class. Additionally, he reused the same slides and lectures from SOC 111, so I basically learned the same thing twice. His feedback on essays is so unhelpful, making comments such as, "says who? you? who cares?" I would avoid him if possible
One look at his assignment outline will tell you that he is neither willing to adapt to technological and social developments of the 21st century nor be open to viewpoints by authors and thinkers younger than himself, and that he takes no accommodations or responsibility. His class is also a bore and will probably make you very uncomfortable.
He went off on his own discussions a lot mid lecture. Keeps comparing women to toilet cleaners or something like that? He was trying to make a point but it kept coming off weird. He wouldn't give me feedback for my paper either so I have no idea what went down there. But tests were online and straightforward as long as you did the reading.
I liked his teaching style; he's a very cool guy.
At first, I thought he was an engaging prof, but after weeks of listening to him calling women the 'toilet cleaners' in a relationship, and boasting about how rich he is, it got a bit trite. There were many times that he told students we would've gone to a "good" school if we had money. It's wierd that he hates on the school that HE teaches at.
I was so scared by all the bad reviews but he wasn't even bad and sometimes even funny. He does say some questionable things at times but if you ignore it, your experience in his class will be just fine. The course consisted of 3 online multiple choice tests and one essay which were all pretty simple.
I took a risk with this course, despite the terrible reviews. But I enjoyed it! Yes, the prof does say some questionable things, but he is realistic. He does not sugarcoat things. The course itself is about inequality, & reality is not all rainbows. The professor is engaging, & it's easy to get a good grade. He is helpful & explains with examples.
Very, very easy to get a good grade and a relatively interesting course, especially with Guzzo. It's very clear how he wants the essay written, and he grades the essay quite fairly. Good professor, wishes the best for his students, and that sentiment is repeated throughout the course.
all tests were online, plus an essay. pretty fair marker and it's easy to get a good grade as long as you understand the content
These reviews are so misleading because Silvano is great. All 3 tests were online, he gave amazing feedback on the essay, and seemed to grade fair. His lectures were very interesting, funny, and helpful. Although I couldn't attend all, I found going to his lectures very helpful. If you put in the effort you can definitely get an A+
