She is awesome! Very personable - one of the few profs I've had that could make a class of 200 feel like a real discussion - and get me to come to class at 9am! Love her! Take her class!
Great class! Lectures are interesting, notes easy to understand and are posted online. Exams are easy and she marks very fair on essays. She's a really nice prof and friendly. Workload isn't too much. Course consists of midterm, final, essay outline, and final essay.
She is an OK prof, and a very nice person. Her lectures are not very stimulating, and would be interesting with more discussion. Class is less sociology, more social psychology. Emphasis on memorizing useless theories, as opposed to critical thought.
She was disorganized and the materials for the course were useless. Participation was not required and for the most part, no one came to class. VERY frustrating class and professor.
One of the best professors I have ever had. The subject matter (romantic relationships) is interesting in itself, but she made it even more interesting. Personal anecdotes and stories made for a very effective teaching style, I feel I learned a lot in the class and had fun doing so.
She's awesome proff, down to earth. If you attend her lectures and study her lecture slides then you can easily get a decent mark/. Her lectures are so clear and she gives such awesome examples to make you understand the point she is trying to get across. She's so open and willing to help you clarify any misunderstandings, & organized.
great prof , easy marker. midterm is tricky but i did the extra paper and ended up with an a. the final was easy.Go to class and take notes. dont need to read text and you will get a B+ or higher
Excellent professor. She is one of the best at UBC. If you get the chance to take a class with you, jump on it!
Silvia is a really excellent prof: funny, engaging, and very committed to her students. She really steps you through the material and doesn't just lecture the entire time; there's room for in-class discussion and some of her funny personal anecdotes. She is very approachable and overall I would definitely take courses with her again.
Silvia is just such a good prof. She makes the material understandable, relevant and interesting. I love going to class - she has a good sense of humour and she interacts with the class. It is not just the same old boring class. The exams are pretty easy if you go to class and she gives hints about what is on it. She's great, take her class!
She's an incredibly approachable person. Her lectures are interesting and actually useful for the final exam. Hint: if she says "HINT" OR "THIS IS IMPORTANT" most likely 2/3 times it'll be on the exam! So go to class. Class is also interactive and interesting, it's easy to pay attention to her lectures, with her examples and personal andecdotes.
I took her relationship class in the summer of '08. This was one of my favorite courses - ever! She really shines in this class! Her examples are great! We were laughing a lot of the times too. The Midterm and final exam were fair and the term paper was fun to write as well ;). Her class made me so interested in FMST that I decided to minor in it!!
A great intro class into the study of the family. She provides personal examples in class to help her students remember the information. The midterm was OK, kinda long and not enough time. The final was much better though... Also, there is a chance for extra credit in this class so take advantage. Overall, I give her 2 thumbs up! Great class ;)
She is very approachable and helpful. Dr. Bartolic is clear in her lectures and she provides exam *hints* every class. MT and final exam are manageable and she is a fair marker. Her personal anecdotes/stories are hilarious. Important to note that classroom attendance is recommended... also, study her slides thoroughly for the MT and final.
Ok prof. shes a nice person, but her lecture style can get pretty confusing. she makes a lot of generalisations, and you need to memorize a lot of random stuff.not enough analysis of material, a lot of regurgitation. overall ok. probably wouldn't take another course by her though.not that stimulating
she is really easy going. she made the materials less complicated and tests are easy as long as you read a text book!! but TAs werent so good :(
Fabulous professor! I am going to take more classes from her. She explains concepts clearly and uses a lot of class participation to bring her point across. Great sense of humour. Down to earth. Attending class is a huge asset for tests.
Obviously loves her subject matter. Very inspirational.
One of the best classes I've taken in UBC. Genuinely wants to help students do well in exams. Fair marker (don't let her TA mark your papers!). Class went for 3 hrs but it went flying by. Questions are well laid out. This is a class where hard work will really pay off! Her examples in class were very useful and easy to remember.
take this class! i got 98% on the midterm for christ sakes! if you have psych background you will do VERY well. she actually ended up having to scale down the final grades because they were so high! she's funny, interesting, probably one of the best profs ever. the paper is super easy to write because its about your own personal intimate relationsh
Summer Semester- She was very preoccupied with going on her vacation rather than teaching the course. The text book is more essential then actually going to class - intimate relationships $120 - she makes many generalizations and is very "statistics show" oriented.
She's a great prof! She uses a lot of examples in class that are very relevant to her notes which in turn will help you on the midterm. I'm not sure but I think she marks harder on the final but maybe thats just me. Print out her powerpoint, go to class and take notes.
My favourite prof so far. Made lectures interesting, with really relevant examples that made the concepts stick.
She's friendly and funny. Though she's too much of a researcher in my opinion: meaning she shows a lot of statistics/studies and gives no room for students' discussion, thought, and growth. In my opinion this is what distinguishes an OK prof from a great prof. She's OK.
GREAT CLASS. GREAT PROF. EXPECT TO READ A LOT PLUS HER LECTURE SLIDES!
great prof! my favourite prof so far. uses a lot of real life examples (a good chuck of the test requires you to provide examples too). Attending lectures can help a lot on understanding the material and know what to study for
For some reason, I wasn't a huge fan of Bartolic for this class. I have taken courses with her before. I think it was possibly just how boring the subject was. Always attend class. She posts slides but they don't make sense unless you actually go to class and get her comments.
Really nice woman. She's quite clear, 240A was a big class and if you didn't attend it really hurt your mark. Thorough powerpoints, great examples, overall successful professor. Also, she's beautiful.
Is clear and willing to help and gives adequate examples, pretty much original character
Super nice prof, you DEFINITELY have to read the textbook and go to class because her exams are fairly hard/specific, but her slideshows are so clear and so is she so just do your work and no worries!
Great Prof! Very enthusiastic and interesting. Textbook is a must as many key concepts are only fully understood from reading. Will do well if you put forth a little effort!
Awesome Prof. Funny, makes relavant examples. Her power points are very useful, readings can be read if you dont get it in class, If you attend all the time you should pass she makes the material fun to read and know. Has great command of her lectures. Very funny.
just read the text book and powerpoint and you'll do fine! also, make sure to think examples for the exam! exams are MC, short answers and long answers..MC are a bit confusing but ALL from textbook and powerpoint
One big assignment broken into sections, with feedback and comments after each section. Didn't need much help, but did very well. Marking criteria is crystal clear, just follow the criteria as if it is a checklist and you will ace it!
If you are considering taking any course with Silvia Bartolic, save yourself the trouble and DON?T. Don?t get me wrong, great lecturer but she likes to keep class average very low. Her courses are supper easy but she likes to prove they are hard by making unfair exams and marking subjectively.
She is a wonderful professor who gives examples of her own life. Tests and papers are fair. Recommended course!
Skipped every single class. Passed the midterm and the essay. Will most likely pass the final too. All by cramming the textbook and notes 2-3 nights before. Interesting material too. Highly recommended. Not that hard.
She's a nice lady, and she's always polite and courteous to her students. Her class had no essay (YES!) but a warning for those who want to take her class just because of that: Her exams have a lot of finicky multiple choice with answers that were not wrong - just less right than other answers. Also, the class was theory heavy for most of the term.
I've taken psyc102 before suffered and failed it :( This course is very similar but she makes me just want to go to her lectures everyday! She is so nice, always has a smile on her face and makes everyone very comfortable. She uses her own examples to help students to understand the theories. Highly recommend her!
Her lectures were extremely interesting! It was my favourite class!
Probably one of the most amazing profs I've ever had. She's fun, engaging, tells stories that are amusing and get her points across, and she's super approachable and passionate about her subject. I would emphatically take classes, whatever they were, just to get her as a prof. (I've had her for SOCI 200 & 240)
She's really nice, and I found the course really interesting and easy enough if you do the readings. There are exam questions on chapters she doesn't talk about in class. Uses lots of good examples to explain the theories. I recommend this course and prof!
Had her for soci200 as a summer course. She is super friendly and approachable. I really enjoyed her class and would definitely recommend the course (especially as a summer course). Tests were MCQ, short answers and a long answer which were really easy once you studied - really good marker
Best prof ever. She makes boring material interesting, and uses great examples for important points that will stick for the exams. Highly recommended- if there is a chance to take a class with her, jump at it!!
she keeps things interesting and explains with her own real life examples. Hard marker with papers but relatively fair exams. must study and going to class means less need for reading
Fantastic professor and extremely friendly. She knows a lot about Social Interaction theories and makes the class engaging and interesting to be in. Use of textbook is extensive and can be quite in detail to the material. Exams are fair but long, time can be a bit constraining but Silvia offers many options to improve. Best Socio Prof Ever
she's absolutely the best sociology prof in UBC. Elegant lady, fun class, good examples make you don't want to skip her class at all.
tricky multiple choice questions, 2 midterm (30% each) 1 final (40%) so you better not screw up but other than that okay course with lots of text heavy readings that take forever.
Great prof! Made the course fun - I never fell asleep! Very clear, slides were helpful, textbook wasn't too useful but the 'reader' was - was tested a lot on mt and exam. Interesting material, go to lecture, take notes, do readings in 'reader'. Mts and exam were very fair.
tough class, just b/c of the nature of the material. reading the textbook is good at the start but becomes unnecessary and repetitive after a while. two midterms, first was easy, 2nd BRUTAL, final=ok. i had to get a tutor to do well in this class at the end. talk to her and show up to class, she explains things quite well. labs=hard
You won't make sense of her lecture notes unless you go to class. She gives examples with some humour in it so you're sure to remember them which is extremely helpful when answering questions on the exam. She bases her MCs mostly on her custom textbook readings. Didn't find the exams too hard but it's just the TAs marking poorly.
Very nice course, textbook use is HEAVY, to ace midterms and final - memorize lecture notes and read each chapter of the textbook 5-6 times before exam = then its easy to get 90+ on the midterms!
Silvia is such an interesting prof! Her class is very interactive and very friendly environment. She is very helpful and clear on subject matter. Fun class every time, lots of story sharing and she makes very funny jokes. Makes me look forward to this class every time.
Silvia is a nice person and overall a good professor. The content of this class is dry overall, but she manages to make some of it interesting. She is no reason not to take a class.
Amazing professor with inspirational lecture material : ) Classes were sometimes dry but mostly very entertaining. Textbook and reader use is VERY heavy, so make sure you read and take notes on everything especially if it wasn't talked on in class. If you study hard you should do very well (85+). Recommend for summer!
Such a good prof. She made everything super clear and consise. I took this in summer 2011, and I went to almost every lecture, but I didn't feel like I studied thaaat hard for exams (skimmed the textbook and notes), but still did quite well (85%). She was very fair.
She is absolutely amazing! I loved her class, she is a very fair marker, her exams are very fair, and she is very enthusiastic about her work, her lectures are very helpful and not boring, I highly recommend taking her course!
Silvia is a great prof. She explains her material very clearly, and gives a very thorough review at exam time. She keeps the content interesting by telling funny stories from her own life. I took her Intro to Group Interaction, it was so fascinating and applicable to day-to-day life that I recommend it everyone, from Arts kids to Engineering.
is clear in class, however does not articulate what she wants for assignments and marks you down for this. tests are unfair and require lots of reading through the text and critical analysis. would not recommend her.
Great, funny prof but terrible TA markers and unclear midterm outlines. The midterms aren't really based on the textbook, the questions are subjective and the material is quite dry. I wouldn't recommend this unless you're very interested in the topic. This semester they've instated new textbooks that make the course much harder.
Don't take this course if you don't have to! exams are very difficult and do not reflect the lecture. Lecture slides are not organized and she does not explain everything. By listening to her in class, you would think it is very easy but when it comes to grading, its much more in depth than what she talks about in class.
Honestly, Bartolic is a nice lady that likes to tell interesting stories in class.. but her teaching style is not too effective. She lectures like a high school teacher, reading off her slides BUT HER EXAMS ARE BRUTAL. Most of her multiple choice questions are based on textbook, which she NEVER talks about in class.
Dr Bartolic is a nice person but her lectures and lecture slides were fairly incomprehensible, which made the exams difficult to study for. I wouldn't take a class with her again.
She makes her lectures very easy to understand, and she tricks you into thinking that it's easy and all common sense. The exams are all from the textbook which do no reflect her lectures at ALL. Very unclear about what to study.
Bartolic's a great prof! The examples she gives in class make the material so clear. She's very clear on what you need to do, what to study, etc. She gives bonus assignments, which is great if you want to boost your grade! Exams aren't easy, but not super hard (there's m.c. and written). Do the readings, study her lecture notes, and know examples!
Dr Bartolic is hands down the best prof I have ever had. Her lectures are really engaging which means there's no need to take notes obsessively, and her exams are fair (you'll do fine as long as you do your readings!) Would love to take another course with her again.
Her lectures are very clear, concise, and interesting. This is misleading however, as her exams are quite difficult. Half of them are based on the textbooks which are pretty outdated and tough to understand. All in all though, a great class to take if you are majoring/minoring in sociology or just interested in the topic of social interaction.
An amazing prof! She is obviously very passionate about her work, tells funny stories to entertain the class, and is very approachable for questions. She does have a tendency to ramble, but her lectures are interesting. I'd definitely recommend taking her class, but dedicate yourself to textbook reading and take lots of notes from her powerpoints.
Sylvia is amazing! So laid back and cool. Her exams are very realistic and clear. Read the text, enjoy her funny anecdotes in class and you'll do well and enjoy yourself.
excellent prof, lectures and exams are straightforward and Bartolic keeps the material engaging
This is a survey course, not really interesting. However, the professor helped to make it interesting and straight-forward. LOTS OF WORK TO DO.
clearly her first time teaching this course. very unorganized, no guidance whatsoever, posted study questions 2 days before the final exam. switched instructions about final exam 2 days before. DONT TAKE THIS COURSE.
As mentioned below, claimed she would send the study questions out weeks before the exam, and sent them three days before instead, despite being emailed repeatedly. Not to mention these were crucial as she had assigned a 900 page text. Could have been a great course if it was not for her being disorganized. She's nice though, hopefully she improves
FMST 314 is a must take elective for anyone graduating with an arts degree. Silvia makes each class unique and her stories keep students engaged with the material. I was really interested in the class going in to it, and I wasn't disappointed. Definitely recommend FMST 314 with Silvia Bartolic!
Dr. Bartolic is great at giving lectures. She explains everything at a simple, understandable level. The concepts that she explains comes with funny and engaging examples. Taking a class with her might even make you switch majors, even faculties. Her midterms are worth 30% each and focus on BOTH the readings and lecture!!!!!!! Do your readings!!
Dr. Bartolic is an amazing prof! She is very passionate about her subject matter which makes you want to attend her lectures! She uses tons of examples to illustrate theories and ideas, her power point slides are clear and helpful, and really involves the class in interesting discussions. Exams are challenging, but fair. Would Recommend!!
Dr. Bartolic is a great person but her lectures are dry as bones. The readings are way too long. Similar to what was mentioned in the comment page everything may appear easy but the exams are worded so that it really trips you over. I really regret taking this class as an elective. AVOID!
Super helpful and friendly. Super good examples used that are easily applied to every day life. MUST TAKE CLASS WITH HER.
Silvia is an amazing professor. Her classes are always very interesting and concepts are presented very clearly. Her lecture notes are very useful to use when it comes to studying for exams.
Took this class to fulfil my degree requirement. Honestly, this course was the hardest/most amount of work that I had to do since first year in Arts1. Course is split into 8 labs, midterm, class project (worth 40% of your grade), and a final. I didn't drop a mark on the labs, got wrecked on the midterm, rocked the project/final. Hard but good mark.
Silvia is an awesome prof! The course has a fair bit of work: 2 papers, 2 midterms, and a final. The papers were marked by a TA, but the topics were simple. The midterms and final were fair. You can do very well as long as you re-read the chapters tested once before the exam and use the Silvia's PowerPoint slides to do some last-minute studying.
Her tests are basic memorization of the terms covered in lecture so memorize everything and you are good to go! Her tests also test very basic stuff and not the little details. Textbook is hardly ever tested except for a few definitions. Show up to class and take notes on what she says and the course is an easy A for sure!
This wasn't my favourite class but I liked Silvia! She's funny and tries to keep things interesting and relevant by using real-life examples. This class is entirely test-based (exams are worth 25-40% each) and I'm not a good test taker, so I struggled but still enjoyed the course. I'd take a class with her again if there were term papers involved.
Slivia is just making it up as she goes. She often tires to explain concepts but in the process confuses herself, which is even more confusing for those listening to her. She posts her lectures, and uses a textbook but she picks and chooses what information is valid for grading and is not consistent. She also is always changing due dates.
The content is extremely interesting and the LearnSmart option was an easy way to get 5% for participation and made the quizzes (30%) a breeze. While her lectures can be a bit boring and long, I took this course based partially on the fact she was teaching it. Beware though, the group projects and criteria for assignments can be really vague.
really disorganized , depends on student reminders and reliance of the TA slides and examples are equivalent to textbook although passionate speaking, not very clear
Silvia is a good prof. She is approachable and fun. She gives good examples to further your understanding of concepts. Overall, a good professor.
Although the course content is interesting, the lecture slides are confusing and she is very disorganized. You must learn EXTENSIVE terminology - most of the course material was memorizing terms, and I found her lectures to get less interesting as the course went on. Hard final and midterms, not an easy elective course!
Silvia is so sweet! Her lectures are full of examples that help you understand and remember the content well. Her lecture slides are rather vague so going to class is MANDATORY to get notes and do well. Read the textbook thoroughly, go over notes, and memorize! Then you will get A's. 2 midterms and 1 final exam with lots of extra credits.
Best Prof at UBC, hands down.
Silvia is a good teacher and tries very hard yet she always seems lost. She's somehow confused as to what's going on and is consistently disorganized. The upside is that her courses tend to be very easy. Just don't count on Silvia being much help.
I loved having Silvia as a prof - her lectures are interesting, her examples are clear, and she wants you to succeed. I liked that her class was a balance of tests, a paper, and small participation assignments. Tests are very fair - if you study and read the textbook, you can do really well. I would definitely recommend taking this class with her!
Extremely unorganized and very unclear in terms of expectations for the group projects and the final exam. She is a lovely lady and passionate about the subject, but not the greatest professor. Our project was due over a month ago and our final exam was 3 weeks ago, and we still haven't gotten our marks back yet!
Great lecturer-she takes a lot of info from the text into her slides but her own accompanying personal stories with makes lectures engaging! She was flexible w/her students & willing to change weights of exam/participation/project grades but the actual grading criteria was really unclear. Easy A if you read the text! Gives exam q's 2wks in advance.
So unorganized. Didn't let us know any of our grades on any assignments. Went into the final exam blind as to what our current grades where
TERRIBLE!!! unorganized, annoying, never handed back one thing the entire class, treated the TA like her personal assistant (making her run around campus and get her coffee, etc) annoying, terrible instructions for projects, clarity of instructions worse when asked, inconsistent DO NOT TAKE SHE IS THE WORST!!!!
Pretty bad prof. She's extremely disorganized and didn't hand back any of our assignments or quiz grades (they're still not back and the term ended almost a month ago). Even the final marks aren't released! Took this as a (hopefully) interesting elective, but it turned out to be quite boring, and my lowest mark this term. AVOID!
So bad! Very unorganized ! Never gave any assignments back.... Never take her class! Lectures are boring
I really loved Silvia's class. She gives very interesting and engaging lectures, and I always enjoyed her classes. She tells lots of stories and makes the content accessibly and easy to learn. She takes a long time to grade things. Other than that, I would highly recommend her.
The worst experience of my 3 years at UBC. Prof. Bartolic was so late in marking and providing feedback for a research draft submitted over a month prior that our term-long project was delayed. What this means is students were expected to conduct research during exam season, which is entirely unfair. Unprofessional, irresponsible, and mediocre.
Very disorganized prof! Told us to hand in a draft of a term project, but never gave us the feedback altho she promised to! Didn't get any of our assignments back on time, and not to mention the final grades for the course weren't received until almost 2 months after the final! Don't take classes with her!
1 Mid term - multiple choice which was easy. A final that was multiple choice and was easy. We did a research project. Go to each class, ask her questions, & follow her time line, the assignment itself is pretty easy. She does attendance half the time for participation marks. She is so nice & helps when asked. She offers letters of recommendation
I am disappointed as I really loved this prof + the class was interesting, but it has now been 2 months after the last day of her class + we have STILL not received our grades! The bulk of our grades have yet to be marked which is very frustrating considering we emailed her asking her about the approx. date + she said itll be ready a month ago
Like some people have mentioned before, she is extremely slow with marking our assignments. Only got my grade for the survey/methods section back one week before the end of the term. Didn't even give any real feedback except for minor formatting things that were determined by the online survey software. Not worth the wait. But nice person tho.
THE PROF IS SO DISORGANIZED NO ONE KNOWS WHATS HAPPENING IN THIS CLASS, EVEN THE TA DOESNT KNOW WHATS GOING ON. WE HAVE AN OPTIONAL FINAL AND OUR PROF TELLS US THAT WE BETTER SHOW UP IF WE SIGN UP FOR IT AND 1 HOUR BEFORE THE EXAM SHE SENDS US ALL AN EMAIL SAYING SHE CANT COME AND THE FINAL IS ONLINE. THIS CLASS IS A JOKE. GREAT GPA BOOSTER THO!!!!
Very sweet & caring prof. Accommodating and helpful. Definitely slow with marking assignments but it's clear that it's because she's busy, not because she doesn't care. Puts slides online and mostly sticks to them during lectures so you can get away with skipping usually. Gives regular readings from the textbook but totally manageable.
Dr. Bartolic is wonderful and one of a kind. She is always willing to discuss for clarity, and she genuinely cares about all her student's success. Her lectures are thoughtful, engaging, and she really facilitates a warm and positive class environment. Although her course subject matter is tricky, she does a fantastic job teaching it.
Had a group essay which was a good chance to boost grade. Tests also had a group portion that was optional but could help improve grade. Lectures were very interesting and she did a good job thoroughly going over material.
nice person, terrible prof. Emails sent to her are ignored completely or replied a month later. Assignments took way too long to be marked which makes it hard for us to proceed to the next part of the project. Exams are purposely worded to be tricky. Super vague with assignment expectations and is a very tough marker. worst prof in my 4 years here
I don't even know where to start. This term has been a nightmare. She is so unorganized and her quizzes don't depend on your knowledge of the textbook, but is just made up of trick questions with extremely similar answers. Hard to pass. Most of your grade depends on how well you are able to present, which some students are just not good at.
Dr. Bartolic seems like a caring person, but her slides are hard to catch up with, and the contents barely overlap with the textbook. Too many little assignments that only worth too little for your efforts. Weekly quizzes are pretty hard to get full marks even if you read the whole associated chapter. A Suffocating and depressing class.
While Dr. Bartolic is a very caring and relatively accommodating person, SOCI200 with her has to be one of the worst and most poorly organized classes I have ever taken. The online quizzes are made to purposely make getting high marks impossible, and often questions do not match up with or even pertain to course content.
I am taking FMST 314 online with Sylvia and i think she is amazing! She is so engaging, approachable, and kind, not to mention funny and does not air on the serious side of things. Her assignments and quizzes are easy to do well on. She has made a huge effort to chat outside of class and i love her!
Dr. Bartolic is incredibly kind, caring, and accommodating; her lectures are engaging (even online), and she encourages participation to expand our knowledge. She is always more than willing to go the extra mile to help her students, and obviously cares about the well-being and success of her students.
Dr. Bartolic's class was an easy A. If you come to class and complete the participation exercises (that are only graded on completion), you'll do well. A lot of group work. Each week there was a quiz on each textbook chapter and summaries of articles she assigns. Quite a few things to do for the class, but not difficult.
Silvia is so sweet and really makes you feel involved/present in the classroom. While the content is complex/difficult, and the small class size can be intimidating, she does a great way of explaining concepts and gives us the opportunity to discuss with others our thoughts or do mini-assignments for homework. This class is awesome!
Dr Bartolic is a caring teacher, and always encouraged participation. But, prepare for a disorganized course and teacher. She forgot things often, and the assignments (for few marks every week) were long and marked harshly. Many grades are unknown, and big projects are not marked in a timely matter. Final grades are still not out.
Her class is so disorganized. Besides, her lectures are confusing. She didn't mention things from the textbook, but the textbook will be tested! It's all about self-learning. No clear guidelines for assignments, projects, and midterms. Super slow grader, I still haven't received the feedback from the previous part of the project but it is due now!
The Professor was very disorganized. We never really knew what to expect. We also had reflections due every week, on top of a group projects, in-class assignments, and midterms every two weeks. The Powerpoint are extremely broad and kinda hard to take notes on. She also takes a very long time to grade any assignments.
Bad, BAD experience for a straight-A student. "Midterm" two weeks into Sept. Lectures are pointless. SO many small assignments, nearly no instructions but expectations are so high. Grades harshly AND slowly. Final is 2.5hrs hand-written with MC, short answer, AND ESSAY. Textbook free but messy AF. Nice person, bad prof. Take at your own expense.
Siliva is a nice person but I do think that I did not take a lot away from the course by the end of it. There are a shit ton of participation activities and projects throughout and most of the time aren't that well connected with the topics being covered. She does try her best but I do believe can do a lot better! A really sweet woman!
Heavy workload (weekly 700-word essays+ a midterm per 2 weeks+ group project+ final), grade slowly. self-learning is required, as she often misses classes due to personal commitments and does not discuss the material assigned for reading. Furthermore, she frequently interrupts non-native students while they are answering questions.
While she was a kind and relatively caring professor, there was little to no feedback given on assignments. When inquiring further, she was unhelpful via email. I wish that she makes herself more accessible online. Lectures were redundant and not very helpful.
Bartolic's class has a heavy workload, but she's accommodating and lectures are engaging. unstuckstudy helped me prep for the exams. Overall, it's a challenging but rewarding class if you put in the effort.
An interesting class but she comes off as overbearing. Gives little to no feedback during office hours. Was told I could be accommodated for an activity but was refused later on. Didn't weigh the midterm and midterm project the same, one was way easier than the other. Claimed all her bad reviews are from mad students because they got poor grades.
Pros: Personable and knowledgeable during lectures Cons: Course seems disorganized at times, unclear project expectations, little detail and direction given for feedback on parts of the group project (also returned to students late with little headway for the next part's deadline), choosing handwritten final exam, delayed marking overall
Classes are usually interesting but professor tends to be unorganized. Expect to handwrite A LOT for the midterms and final exam (The final exam has multiple choice, short answers (which are usually long answers) plus an essay worth a lot). If you're looking for an easy class, pick something else.
Dr. Bartolic is engaging and the lectures were pretty interesting. However, exams were weird and grading is very nit picky and subjective, especially for the group project. Would not recommend her as an elective if you can find another prof.
I would advise others not to take this class. I loved the content and studied HEAVILY, but the grading is unjust unfortunately. It seems that the marks are purposely brought down using the group project, where comments don't reflect the poor grade. Asking for clarification is met with passive aggressiveness.
Silvia is very passionate about what she teaches and is very caring. Her exams were fair as long as you studied for them and read the textbook. Her marking can be a bit tough in some areas, but overall, I enjoyed the class and the content was very interesting.
While she may be an engaging professor, do not take her class as a GPA booster. She grades unfairly, deducts marks without justification, and provides feedback that completely contradicts the grades she gives. When students ask for an explanation, she refuses to clarify and instead tells them to submit a formal review of academic standing.
Dr Bartolic was a great professor. She made all the topics easy to understand and was very down to earth. This class had a group project which made up a large part of your mark but you do peer evaluations which help account for any issues. I thought this class was a fun elective and wasn't very hard to prepare for as she gave you choices on papers.
