The material is difficult, but she provides really detailed notes for each unit. She also genuinely cares that you understand - she is willing to stop and explain and is very accessible and nice.
She is very nice and always willing to slow down the class to a better pace. Homeworks are a little hard but are good practice for exams. I just had two midterms and a final with homeworks for my grade. She has a little accent but not that hard to understand. As long as you can get the general idea of the concepts, easy A.
She is very nice and helpful. Always willing to slow down the class to answer questions and provide help. Homework twice a week, overall, not difficult to manage. Extra credit on the midterms. Midterms were a little difficult but she goes over all the concepts clearly, so just pay attention to the lectures and study. She grades very fairly.
Overall, pretty good. Standard professor. More homework than most but has clear grading standards. Goes over the material kinda fast, but is willing to slow down. Midterms were a little hard, but she's very lenient on submitting.
i really liked her as a professor but she is not very good at responding to emails. she is extremely nice during office hours and is willing to give lots of help, but the difficulty comes from the difficulty of the course, not her. although, she is a little bit stingy with giving past exam answers. professor liu gives out more material than she doe
Professor Espinosa is very caring, dedicated, and knowledgeable. She is open to answering questions and receiving feedback. The homework is manageable, and midterms have extra credit. As a result of her good teaching and relatively lenient grading, this class is relatively easy. I highly recommend Professor Espinosa!
Prof. Espinosa is an amazing professor! She cooperates to help you succeed which complements her charming personality. Overall, take her to avoid reading a textbook because she gives you the class notes with the solutions. If you want to boost your GPA, take her! You will not regret it.
Lovely person. People are quick to dislike her lectures because she has a non-native accent, which can be difficult to understand for some students. But she was extremely accommodating and a great teacher. Her notes were very accessible. Very kindly adjusted the amount of workload and grading so students can have an easier time. awesome person.
Professor Espinosa is a great lecturer who also curves very well. Although recitation quizzes and homework is a lot more difficult than the material covered in class, as long as you form study groups and study hard for the weekly quizzes you will be fine. The midterm and the final are much easier though!
Just downright bad. Lectures were laughably useless and impossible to understand to the point where I would do 10x better by simply skipping them. I'd definitely recommend taking a different professor.
Amazing teacher. Very happy I took her.
Professor Espinosa is nice, and the notes from which she lectures are easily accessible to view on Brightspace. However, her lectures are difficult to follow because she skips steps when solving problems and doesn't explain her work. Her lectures and notes were extremely difficult to follow and her teaching style inhibited my and others' learning.
Silvia is one of the nicest professors I have ever met. She is very understanding and provides quite a few bonus marks on the midterms. It is a very easy class, but her lectures are sometimes hard to follow due to her accent. She provides notes beforehand, so it is not too bad overall!
She is really bad at teaching math so honestly, you will have to teach yourself but she cares about her students and the midterms are so casual.
While Espinosa isn't great at teaching, she is SO nice and kind. It's hard for me to criticize such a nice and caring professor because they don't come around too often. It is hard to understand a lot of the things she says, because of her accent, and the things that you can understand don't really make sense. But she's so nice and repeats tests!!
Professor Espinosa is a very kind person but not a great teacher, unfortunately. She offered no help after the midterms (the average was in the 60's for both) & she only curves the final test grades. if you're good at math you should be fine. If you have to take Calculus to satisfy a math credit, than I would recommend a different professor.
If you want to pass or even get a good grade in a calculus class, don't take her. She skips steps in her notes making it very hard to understand; you are left to fend for yourself, which completely defeats the purpose of her being a professor in the first place. She is nice though. But if you like failing exams, she is for you!
Prof. Espinosa is nice, but that's pretty much it. Her lectures are so bad that I find myself more confused when I attend. She gives out her notes to "help" students but these notes don't contain any solutions or explanations. How are students supposed to learn when they can't even figure out the basic approach to a problem?
Hard class, but she is so kind and approachable.
I feel so bad writing this because she is very nice, but she is not a great teacher at all. The class average is in the lower 60s right now, which is a D. Skips a lot of steps and leaves students with more questions than answers. And the tests are HORRIBLY difficult with little to no partial credit. I pray for fellow pre-meds who take this class.
Relative to other profs, she was the most forgiving and easiest DISCRETE prof (can't speak for calc). The format of discrete was horrible (2 prelectures, 10hr hw set, async quiz, and sometimes a polished proof, all in 1 week and repeat) but that's not her fault, as it was set by the course coord (Shum). Exams were not super hard if you studied well
Prof. Espinosa skips a lot of steps during her teachings, and sometimes it's hard to get a very definitive answer for your questions. Very important to do the homework and quizzes to help boost your GPA. The tests are very hard, but her curve at the end is AMAZING. Such a king and understanding professor who cares about her students' success!
She is a very nice lady but she is not a good teacher. She skips steps, her notes are difficult to understand, and the homework problems are very difficult. She is difficult to understand which makes it difficult to retain information. If you are taking calc for the first time I strongly recommend taking another professor.
Espinosa is a very kind woman, but as a teacher she's pretty disorganized, which makes it hard to learn. Her notes are sometimes hard to understand as she skips steps without explanation. The class average hovered around a 55 for the majority of the semester. She doesn't write the exams but the exams themselves are far more difficult than the class
Silvia Espinosa is a decent teacher and you can tell that she obviously spends a lot of time working on her slides and lecture notes. But she only posts a shortened version online, so her notes are not the greatest to study with for exams, and her final was prob one of the toughest finals I have taken so far at NYU.
Espinosa is a great professor she is kind and everyone to succeed. Downfalls are she has an accent and doesn't curve till end of the semester so grade can be scary. Most of the complaints I heard in this class come from the fact it is hard especially if you aren't great at math. If you study especially the problems we do in class you will do well.
Espinosa is very kind indeed. However, not a good professor. She provided all her notes to access but did a poor job of thoroughly explaining the concepts. There were about 2-4 WA due + Gradescope each week so prepare. Do not take her if you have no prior calc experience and need to learn at a certain pace with clarification, etc. Run, don't walk!
I think if you're somewhat familiar with calculus (have taken it in high school), Espinosa is a very solid professor. The exams reflected the questions we did in class which was relieving because I always knew what to expect. She moves at a fast pace though, so there will definitely be a lot of self-teaching if you're unfamiliar with the material.
For her DISCRETE class, homeworks were extremely time consuming/difficult, and often did not connect with what we learned in class. This was by far the worst part. Lectures were ok but fell asleep after 2 hour length. Thankfully she has a great personality, always responds to her email, and exams were easy. Math department's rules made class bad.
She is sooo bad oh my god. First of all her explanations are more difficult to understand than any high school calculus teacher. I actually don't know how she became a professor. She doesn't even care for her students and it is so evident. Don't take her no matter what.
I wouldn't say she's great at teaching but she prepares you for the final which is the same across all sections and its the hardest. her midterms and problems she does in class are ADJACENT to the final. quizzes r super easy just look at the notes and the homework are good practice for the midterms
This professor is a brilliant mathematician but has 0 teaching skills. Her explanations are not clear and makes simple concepts difficult to understand. The midterms were harder than department final. The quiz topics aren't aligned with the material covered in class. If you struggle to keep up, you are being tested on material from 2 weeks ago.
Calculus at NYU sucks - so much unnecessary work on multiple different platforms. While Espinosa is nice and seems to care, her accent makes it IMPOSSIBLE to learn anything (not exaggerating). I already knew Calculus, so I was fine, but if you do not know Calculus, this will be your hardest class as lectures are useless with her accent. Beware! Lol
The one thing I learned from this class is just bc you go to a good university, don't expect good professors. Her lectures teach you nothing and leave you more confused. The 2 midterms(Averages of 52 and 58 which don't get curved) were way harder than the department final. Take another professor if you can so you can learn and get reasonable tests.
She provides her notes, but doesn't explain very clearly. You'll need to go to the recitation every week cuz there's a quiz, but it's easy. Be ready to have 1 gradescope homework and 1-2 cengage homework every week. The exams are much more difficult than the quizzes every week, so be prepared. She curve your grade until the end of the semester.
While she is a very kind teacher, she doesn't explain things well at all. In fact, I leave lectures often feeling more confused than not. Class itself wasn't too much work though; couple webassigns, one gradescope homework, and 1 quiz a week. Definitely don't take her if you have no prior calc knowledge though.
She's kind but not good at teaching, be prepared to self-teach. Weekly quizzes are EASY, two midterms are harder than other sections, average of 50s. The department final is way easier than her midterms. Overall not that bad, she only curve at the end of the semester.
take another teacher if you can. she makes the midterms so hard for no reason. strong accent. good curve though.
YALL DONT WALK, RUN!.. away. espinosa was nice, but omg this class was a DUMPSTER FIRE. i literally struggled sm and the accent did NOT HELP. im 90% sure she spoke a diff language for part of some lectures. if you're good at calc, take her. but if you're like me w little experience in calculus, your gpa is gonna need one hell of a CPR session
A medium amount of homework, pretty frequent exams (3x semester). Really nice professor, seems extremely knowledgeable, but if you have the bad luck of having her class in a room without a microphone, you will not be able to hear her at ALL.
She has a heavy accent no one understands a thing. Avoid at all costs.
She's really nice, but not the best teacher. She uses her own notes but only give 1-2 examples for each type of problem in which one would be VERY easy and the other would be VERY hard, which contributed to making the material very hard to understand. Curves heavily at the end, would only take if you have prior experience in calc
she kind of just reads off the slides for discrete and doesn't do much, but I know that she was going through a tough time so maybe it's just a one-off. Class difficulty is pretty reasonable and she gives a lot of practice, and very helpful outside of class.
accent is fine in the beginning but gets worse with more complex topics, notes are confusing and she skips steps -- ended up self teaching nearly everything. exams are much harder than the final and she doesnt curve until the very end so you dk what your grade is. avoid please
Truly underrated teacher! Although her accent can be hard at times to understand, she is always there to help and prepares you super well for the midterms and final. If you put time and effort into the class, you will do well and get an A. Even though attendance isn't mandatory, going to class helps a lot. She also curves really heavily at the end!
Espinosa is a very kind and understanding professor. However, her class was very challenging. Her notes are not very good and lectures become useless towards the end of the semester. Quizzes are easy and she has a massive curve at the end.
Her accent is very heavy so it's hard to understand her, but she curves heavy and is very lenient. On the syllabus, she said she would drop the 3 lowest assignments, but towards the end of the semester she changed it to 5. The course is doable if you do your own work outside the lecture, but it's not easy to understand the lecture.
She has a very strong accent, it is hard to keep up with lectures due to her voice and her really fast pace. She is also a tough grader and has little compassion with her students, if you miss a deadline you will not be able to make up for it whatever your reasons are. I would not take this class again and I regret not dropping it when I could.
She doesn't teach but goes through the handout in class. If you don't have calc experience, don't take her. If you want to learn something, go and find out from the TAs. They do a better job than her. Webassign homework and homework assignments were so much tougher than what she taught in class.
Her accent is very difficult to understand, she teaches the class as if we already know calculus, and you will end up having to teach the topics to yourself. I do NOT recommend
Not a great lecturer but she knows that and curves very well at the end. Most of the kids in my class were doing much worse than I am so if you're okay at Math like some sort of a STEM or Math-y major you'll be fine. Granted my recitation leader was also an angel so it really depends. Insane curve at the end though.
Awful at explaining concepts. Only reason I got an A was I took Calc in HS. If you don't know calc, don't take her. She did have an EXTREMELY generous curve at the end, though.
Dont take it!!! worst math professor in calculus 1! Her accent is too strong, too spanish!!!!!! no one comes to her class!!!! She covers the topic so fast, i dont even understand why so fast, is she pregnant and has to go to the hospital to give birthhhh????????? we still have 3 weeks of class time, and she already finished all the topic!!!!!
The class was very doable, especially if you have taken Calc in HS. Shes very caring and nice. A lot fo times she would show problems that were almost identical to midterm and final exam equations... so if you show up to class and follow her work (and take pictures of the problems shes doing), you can do well.
Could not understand her. Had to teach myself the majority of the concepts taught in class. She provides practice tests that are often extremely similar to the midterms and final, which is nice. If possible though, aim for a different teacher.
It is a tough class with a lot of content covered and a lot of homework, but the professor is kind, responds emails quickly, explains clearly and does a lot of exercises in class.
The explanations are clear. I like that she provides notes and does a lot of problems. There are quizzes, two webassign and homework every week though, so get ready to work a lot! The quizzes are similar to class notes.
Please listen to all the reviews on here. Although Silvia is a nice lady her lectures are basically useless if you are capable of reading the textbook. The first midterm I went to class and studied a little but and got a 75. The second I didn't go to class at all and studied a little but and got a 98. If you have to take her study on your own.
Got a 60 on my first midterm, a 30 on my second midterm, and unknown status for my final. I ended up with a B. Just focus on everything else, such as WebAssign, Weekly Quizzes, and Homework (Get a 100 on them) and with your midterm/final grades being bad, you will be fine. Didn't go to any of her classes either.
DO NOT TAKE CALC WITH THIS PROFESSOR!! If you don't already have a background in calculus you are pretty much a goner and your GPA is shot. She has a really heavy accent and does not explain topics well. She was finished with all of the units we needed to cover for the semester 3 WEEKS EARLY so that shows how fast she would speed through topics!
Prof Espinosa is the best, if you are not putting the necessary effort of course you are going to get a bad grade. The gradescopes + webassigns are SUPER HELPFULL!!! I would definitely take her again, even if she has an accent she does a good review before tests, and YOU RECEIVE A GOOOD CURVE!!
Lots of homework, gives notes, if you dont already know calc dont take this class.
If you have taken a similar class before and understood most of the material well, you can do good. She is a very sweet, and caring prof who is willing to explain things to you and doesn't make you feel like asking questions is a burden. I will say, for first timers now learning the material I don't know if you will grasp it well.
An extremely kind person, very nice and friendly. Cares about students and their experiences.
Recitation quizzes are exactly like the ones in the notes. She is also a nice teacher and had good notes.
Arguably one of the worst teachers I have ever had at NYU. Impossible to understand, bad at explaining concepts, and honestly doesn't really know what she is teaching. Take literally anyone else
Her class is useless b/c she only runs through the slides without detailed explanation. Her HWs and exams are much harder than those problems in slides.
Professor Espinosa was super sweet. However, I felt like I was mostly teaching the material to myself outside of class. I think the class is okay because there's a huge curve at the end. You need to do 2-3 WebAssigns a week, one Homework, and take a quiz at recitation. If you're ready to dedicate a lot of your time to the class, you'll be good
She's is a nice person, but literally cannot explain even basic math concepts during lectures/OH's, she moves through topics quickly to the point where we finished the entire syllabus about three weeks before the final. She usually gives examples of midterm questions the day before the exams. So, definitely try to attend class before the midterms.
Really caring + sweet. Has accent which makes it tough at times to understand. Quizzes are easy if you go to lecture and have the notes. Midterms and Final get curved but have no clue how much they even were. I got 71 on final, 89 on midterm, 80 on midterm 2, and got an A and got 100s on all hw and quizzes. Averages for midterms were around 60.
Professor Espinosa is a sweetheart. Her class was straightforward to follow along in, and she gave many sample exams to practice with before exams. She's very funny and very sweet and she'll work with you outside of class if you are struggling. She also gave great curves for all of the exams.
She's a nice professor who genuinely wants to help her students, but she's (and the TA's) are so awful at teaching/lecturing. Almost all students are taking calculus 1 for the first time but it doesn't reflect in her lectures + ppl that have taken it before struggle. The good is other assignments help balance out and exams have huge curves.
Silvia is a really nice person however her classes are just unclear. I've friends who have taken this class with other professors that made it much easier. Her lectures do not go into depth enough for the exams. The TA's in this class were just irresponsible, took them forever to get the grades out and the TA would always be late for recitation.
Very un clear lectures many trick questions in quizzes. Hard to understand lectures un clear, hard to talk to you sends you to ta all the time. Un helpful in class and after class. Moves very fast
Very sweet woman, but has a very thick accent and is hard to understand while lecturing. She seems to be clear on what will be on the midterms but is generally very dismissive of questions. Her class is fine and can be taken if you just need to get it over with. Hard to do poorly in this class. Lots of homework.
Nice person, an okay lecturer and the TA's are pretty nice. Quizzes and H.W every week but its not too bad and tests are kinda similar to the H.W she also posts sample exams.
everyone complains but its probably because they didnt go to lecture. the class before exmas she essnetially shows u what the exam questions are and so if study those you wil get a good grade on the exams. show up and u will do fine
If you're expecting to actually learn anything, don't take her. Had to teach everything myself as is what difficult to understand her during lecture.
Not accessible, very hard accent, doesn't explain high level concepts well. Average for midterm was below a 65 for my class and she said that was good. Unfortunately not many good options for professors for this course so just study hard and get through it, and hope you get a good TA.
Worst professor I had at Nyu, her lectures are incredibly boring and she has a hard accent so it is hard to understand everything. She is very poor lecturer and very bad at explaining class material. On the other side she is very nice, but we all are here to learn something and she is not the best at it.
The exams and quizzes are super hard to do well on. Atleast she lets you drop some quizzes and hw.
She's a really nice person, not a great teacher. She won't actually explain why she's taking certain steps and even when asked, won't give a clear response on to what she's showing us. She goes through the lessons fast. However, she does always have office hours and is pretty accessible outside of class.
She is a really nice and friendly person, and will try to help you in any way she can. Depending on the class performance, can give good curves, extend deadlines for assignments etc. If you want a professor to teach you however, she is hard to understand and sometimes confuses you. Not an amazing professor, but a amazing and kind person.
It was, I think, her first time teaching the course, but overall this class was very fast. You need a very good foundation of math and "pre" understanding of the content to understand anything in class. She goes very fast. What I ended up doing was going to Hesam's MFE class since he explained content much easiar. MFE overall is hard regardless.
Math 131: Hardly any partial credits for exams since they are graded out of 30 or 40 instead of 60 or more. Lecture does not help at all. All the practice exams do not help either. Only thing that I hope now is that she curves. Really bombed my GPA. It does not matter if you study hard or not. Do not take her.
She is a super nice person and always willing to help. Because of the nature of the class, it moves so fast that it is harder to understand, and she wasn't always great at explaining complex ideas in easier ways. One advantage of her class is that she drops your lower grades on quizzes, hw, and webassigns, which helps bring your grade up
Honestly Espinosa is a very reasonable and caring teacher. This class is definitely difficult if you don't have any calculus knowledge because she's not the best at explaining concept wise unless you ask her a clarifying question. Go to the SLGs and OHs if you want to do well. She also gives some of the exam questions during the review sessions.
She was okay. I generally understood the concepts, and I had never taken calculus before, but we may have been a bit underprepared for the final. MFE I is a very hard class overall, and many aspects of the course structure are determined at a higher level, so the difficulty wasn't really Espinosa's fault.
Pretty difficult if you haven't taken calc before. She is nice and wants to see students succeed, however just not good at explaining concepts and gives practice questions unlike what's on the tests. Got a 76 on midterm and 66 on final and ended with B+. MFE 1 is hard in general. Take her over Sanfratello but not Oveys. Not sure about other profs.
You have to teach yourself the concepts in her class no matter how much you try in her class. Does not curve final grade.
