An abrasive personality and an elitist.
Her passion for teacning could only be confused by lazy students. Learned alot.
very engaging lectures, obviously puts a lot of thought in what she presents to
Ignore all bad reamarks. This professor Rules!

Dr. Kluge can bruise your ego. She is deamaning and demands respect when it's undeserving.
The best prof I ever had. I learned a lot, and the class was fun! I would recommend her to anyone for any class... take her even if you don't need th class. Best class experience i ever had
Excellent course. Takes a very unique perspective of thje material as opposed to the other professors. Shows a lot of respect to students and has infinite patience with disruptive students.
Not only is the book a better teacher, it also has a better personality.
The worst prof I ever had. I learned nothing, and the class was dreadful! Most students are stuck with her because of requistites. Most terrible class experience i ever had!!!!!!!!
A bad class taught by a bad professor. Avoid like the plague.

ABSOLUTELY THE WORST PROFESSOR I EVER HAD!
Ok, professor, a bit vauge at times. I learned more in the lab than the lecture.
Awful Prof. Very inconsistent.
Great prof for a serious student. SUPER knowledgable, very respectful and extraordinarily interesting. I'd highly recommend her!
I may quit school, never get a job, and devote my entire life to telling people to avoid this professor.
GREAT prof. Highly recommend!
She is my all time favorite professor ever!! She has one of the most awesome personalities ever! Material is hard, but it is a 400 level class.
The class was hard, but she taught it very well and always kept my interest. Very enthusiastic and made a potentially boring class fun.
Von Kluge is extremely unprofessional in all aspects of the word. She smokes with students, is a poor example for her grad and undergrad students. AVOID ANY COURSE SHE TEACHES.
She is absolutely brilliant. If you as a student can't take the heat, stay out of the kitchen.
Professors should display positive upright behavior. Sylvia Von Kluge does just the opposite. Not being nice to students is uncalled for, and she does this consistently every year, and turns and is nice to her collegues.
I have taken many professors in the EMU psych department and she is by far the most intelligent, scholarly, and accessible. She is also entertainig in class and presents material from different perspectives.
Vivacious. Animated. Enthralling. Interesting. Engaging lectures helped familiarize the vocabulary of psychology in context for everyday use. She presented psychology in a tangible manner. I felt privileged to follow her abstract thinking and expand my abilities to understand the subject.
Uninspired, disagreeable, sullen, unkind professor who makes students uncomfortable and apathetic by the sheer nature of her dreary teaching style. Doesn't keep office hours.
Dr. Von Kluge may smoke with her students and curse during lectures but she is a total sweetheart and is absolutely brilliant. I have taken two classes with her and yes they weren't the easiest but isn't that the point of education, to challenge the student?
History and Systems with Prof. vonKluge is the best course offered at EMU.
Boring. Doesn't explain things well. Condescending if you get confused (like it's OUR fault she can't explain stuff). Hard to recommend any other prof. because most of the psychology profs are the same--disinterested and lousy
She is the "boringest" teacher that you could ever have. Talks in a condescending manner. She is not the best teacher that you would ever want. So if any of you have her, all's i got to say is tough luck. Just hope that the school year is going to go by fast.

Really interested in the subject, really cares about the students. One of the best profs I have ever had.
Awesome, yet quirky prof
Not helpful or accommodating to students. A bad class.
I last had Dr. Von Kluge for behavioral psych back in the late 90's & I now have my master's. She's the only EMU psych professor I still remember because she's funny, concerned with her students and brilliant! A psych students EMU experience isn't complete unless they take her course!
Not concerned about students and generally is hands-off. She has a negative attitude and is part of a bad psychology program.
nothing worthwhile here. remember those ecentric professors they warned you about in high school? wouldn't keep discussion open. just her opinion heard
I think she's a great professor. Strange, but she'll teach you. I think other people have an issue with her because she thinks we're too old to be babied. You want to be babied, go to community college.
People have an issue with her because she is a terrible instuctor with a poor attitude. I should have dropped.
She is very, very interesting to listen to. She is also very enthusiastic. People may think that she is rude, but it is not true. Nobody can say that she is a bad professor. I have learned so much from her (including philosophy and others). Her exams are easy as long as you go to the classes. Exam material is mainly what she lectures in class
"SHE IS A BAD PROFESSOR!"
I love Von Kluge! She's such an awesome professor and makes class so enjoyable! This woman is always making people laugh! I've learned so much from her. I would highly recommend Von Kluge.
I dislked this class and so did anyone who cared. Where do I begin, the elitist attitude of the professor, her poor choice of words, the bad tests. This was my worst college class and I regreted every lecture.
Excellent professor! Graduate level statistics isn't a fun class, but she makes it as good as it can get. That said, she's not easy but I've had much harder professors. The essay's are take home, and are much like the binder assignments. She's a picky grader, but will look over your homework before you turn it in, so there's no reason not to do wel
Anyone who likes this class likes it for the wrong reasons. The instructor does not convey information correctly, but she grades easy. No sense in taking this class if you want to get something out of it.
there are uncountable reasons not to like this class, mostly, the teacher is rude and doesn't prepare students for the test. it's like she doesn't care, and has this suave prima donna nature
Snails along, the profs lethargic style makes every minute seem like an eternity.
I'm not sure what the others' are talking about, Silvia is great! She tells interesting stories that relate to the material presented and always checks to make sure we're understanding the lecture. The exams are hard, but it's a 300 level class not high school. She expects you to pay attention and read the text, which isn't too much to ask.
Even psychology lovers will find themselves rolling their eyes at this one. Each lecture leaves one with a mild headache.
When on task and teaching the material, she is excellent and incorporates various viewpoints in the field. This was one of my favorite psych classes, mostly due to her energy and open worldview. However, it CAN be frustrating as she can get off-topic or be vague about what's important to know. If the class is interested, she's fueled to teach well.
More a waste of time than an educational experience.
Too much time on stories unrelated to the course material and really a bland uninvolved professor. Nothing to write home about.
VonKluge is awesome! Yes, she tells random stories now and again but nothing to interfere, if anything, breaks up idle classroom routine. She's very helpful if you have any questions, tests are hard, but do the reading, study, and you'll be fine! Very fair, very intellectual and enthusiastic. Definitely not a headache!
Bad Instructor. She teaches for herself and leaves students feeling left out. Not available during office hours.
It's enough to make you toss your pencil in the air in disappointment. Nothing here is interesting, involving, or engaging.
SHE ROCKS MY WORLD!! Awesome professor, a TOTAL free spirit. Very innovative in her teaching style, she's a breath of fresh air in the normally stagnant academic environment. Be prepared to do your work, this class isn't a "gimme", but I highly HIGHLY recommend that you take her, it's quite the experience!!
This atrocity is by far my worst classroom experience. Lame and brain-numbing, but does it have to insult my sensibilities with every subject and talking point?
Slightly crazy but I liked her. Tests are tough, study the book and handouts she gives carefully. Go to class! Take notes on her babble if you can keep up or understand.
Inconsistent from day to day. A poor role model for any student. Avoid her courses at any cost.
I loved this class and always looked forward to it! The professor was enthusiastic and passionate. I enjoyed her lectures and learned A LOT! I highly recommend taking this class with her!
One of those experiences which feels like the air is getting thinner and the walls are closing in.
Very helpful. You will learn tons with her if you pay attention and read!
Bad class. The way it tries to toss in gravity to it's barely-an-effort proceedings is just wrong.
This class was much better than I expeted. She is so funny and very enthusiastic. There is a ton of material to learn, but the handouts are helpful. Go to class and read the textbook. You will do well if you work at it.
Boredom sets early in every installment. So utterly broken at every level that it just sputters out into a negative droning void.
I really enjoyed Von Kluge as a teacher. She is very funny and a little quirky, but she keeps lectures interesting and informative. Her tests are kind of hard, but they are fair. Good teacher overall. You won't regret taking her class.
There is a lot of material but Sylvia makes it easy with handouts. Only a few questions on the test from the book. Grade based on exams and one paper that she is very laid back on grading. She also grades on a curve. this is a hard class but i recommend her if your looking for it to a little easier on you!
Even those who enjoy the subject will find this entirely disappointing. Everything is a big waste of time.
most challenging prof so far, but i loved it. she's very knowledgeable and interesting. not many A's in the class, but i got an A because i studied and attended every class.
Really engaging and definitely made this class interesting. If you go to class and pay attention, you can't get lower than a B.
Von Kluge just wants you to show up! She goes off on tangents, but they are actually cool little fun facts that can show up later on a test for extra credit. Curves all tests, and will drop the lowest test grade if the class has good attendance. Never purchased the book and received an A. 20% of test from book 80% from handouts! Loved Her
Great Professor who really cares that you learn, sometimes a little dry but she's a funny old lady who knows and loves what she is talking about. Very organized. Definitely read the book!! 10 ?s at least on every exam. Super fair if you go to class and try.
I loved this class! Von Kluge is a relatable, funny, professor who wants her students to succeed. She loves what she teaches and it shows in every lecture! There is a TON of information, which makes the class challenging, but what you take out of it makes up for it all. I wish I had her for more classes. I highly recommend her!
I have two classes with her and I love them! You learn so much in class (you need to attend to do well). She is passionate about teaching and wants you to do well. Her class is not easy but you will learn a TON. I wish I had taken more courses with her but this is my last semester. I'll have to work for my grade but I'll learn a lot in the end
Very interesting class. Learned a lot. Her tests can be tricky but she curves. If you go to class and pay attention you will get an A.
One of the best instructors I've ever had! She's very intelligent; knows her stuff, but makes everything relate-able. Lectures fly by because Dr. von Kluge is so enthusiastic and funny. She really cares about her students and that they "get it!" Not an "easy A" but you'll learn SO MUCH. Love her and wish I would have had more of her classes.
She's funny and nice but kind of all over the place. Her lectures are fast and you need to take notes on her babble if you can keep up. Tests are hard, no outline to prepare you, so it's difficult to memorize the chapter readings and her lectures with no basis on what she expects. Final Grade depends entirely on 4 exams. Not my kind of professor.
If you plan on skating through the capstone class for psychology then I suggest you find another professor. She is honest and up front with what is expected of you during class. Exams are difficult but so is the material. What else would you expect from a 400 level class. This is not your intro class.
I really like her!!!
Everything that makes a class interesting or informative was missing. Substandard poor quality.
Difficult, confusing. Most everything is worthless. The readings are okay, but this is something to be avoided.
Lectures have no logical sense to them, and extremely hard to take notes on. This makes it hard to study for her difficult exams. She also hands out tons of random sheets with notes on it, that make studying even more confusing. There is no structure at all to this class. Avoid at all cost.
Easy class and very informative. Great teacher! As with any class, if you want to do well (and actually learn something), you should attend class, take notes, and study! I assume that the individuals who rated differently did not do these three...
This class is very interesting. The professor is nice and very passionate about the subject. She has done research in the field and is very knowledgable. That being said this class is very difficult. The tests are tough. I would always attend class and take a lot of notes.
Dr. von Kluge is very passionate about what she teaches. Her lectures are a little tricky to take notes on, so make sure you pay attention. There are four exams that are quite tough, but you should do fine as long as you review your notes and do the assigned reading. She does sometimes curve test scores and she offers extra credit assignments.
Dr von Kluge is extremely passionate about her Philosophy. Come to learn. She gives LOTS of handouts (mostly photo copies of things she finds interesting) but she WILL test you on them. I took this class before studying for the GRE and my advice is to understand she writes exams questions in the "GRE style". She's no slouch.
You have to come to class to learn. If you don't go, you won't get the papers or information because this class doesn't have a book. At this point we have taken two out of four exams, and only 19 out of 67 people have a grade higher than an 80%. If you don't study, you will not do well in the class.
Doesn't give out study guides and expects you to remember everything from lecture. Only has about 10-15 questions from the book in each exam, but you don't know what she will be asking. Very hard class!! She has extra credit, but it's 5-7 page essays from a list of books or a few videos to watch. I would't take this professor again.
Silvia is hilarious. She doesn't use power point and gives out lots of handouts, so you shouldn't skip class. Her lectures are absolutely fabulous because she's very energetic and goodness gracious she knows her stuff. She teaches so you learn, not just so you pass the class.
Be prepared to study and work, but will learn a ton. One of the best prof in the PSY program. Highly recommend !
Silvia is fabulous! Her class is all lecture with no technology allowed in class, but her lectures are wonderful. She explains the history of psych with lots of quotes, pictures, and wild arm gestures. She's loads of fun to listen to, highly recommend!
Sylvia is an amazing professor. Attendance isn't mandatory, but she doesn't use PowerPoint, so it's hard to catch up if you skip. Her tests are a little difficult, but if you show up and pay attention, they aren't too bad. The final paper was intimidating but it was fun. She uses examples from her life, which is fantastic. Trust me and take her!
I love Dr. Von Kluge! She doesn't allow technology, but that isn't a huge deal. She also includes a lot of handouts, so make sure you go to class! The tests are difficult, but she drops the lowest test score and curves a lot; she also offers extra credit. Her lectures are fun and enjoyable, and you actually learn. Always take Sylvia if you can.
Dr. Von Kluge is a nice person, but I personally didn't like her teaching method. She doesn't allow technology & will call you out for using it. 4 exams covering material- 70% from lecture, 30% from book. She won't tell you what to study from the book, but might point out during the lecture what will be on the exam. Has extra credit options though.
Dr. von Kluge has a different teaching style than most professors, which is often difficult to get used to, but I think she's an excellent teacher. If you don't go to class then you'll have a hard time doing well on tests, as all of the material in my class came from handouts and lecture notes.
Take Sylvia if you can! She has fantastic life stories that fit the material that she covers. Her lectures are purely oral, so it's difficult to do well on the exams if you don't come to class. It's not mandatory, but she doesn't use PowerPoint, so come to class if you want to pass. My favorite professor at EMU.
Silvia really knows her stuff, has strong opinions about the topics, and uses great examples from her life. Her lectures are mostly oral and she has a lot of handouts so it is important to go to class. She does not lecture straight from the book but each test contains book material. Grades are based on tests and extra credit so studying is impotant
Silvia has a different teaching approach, but its not terrible. I actually like her teaching method. Her tests are difficult but if you take lecture notes, read the chapters youll do fine. Its not an intro class so you have to study and come to class otherwise you wont do well.
Doesnt use powerpoints, just multiple handouts each class. Lectures are interesting and you need to attend to do well on exams. Only 4 exams and a final paper. Exams are pretty hard
Dr. von Kluge is probably the single most intelligent/invested academic Ive ever met. She absolutely knows what shes talking about and conveys it well. That said, her exams are tricky, the paper is rough, and the handouts/quotes can be overwhelming. Would recommend, but prepare yourself for a solid amount of work with little interpersonal support
I was nervous to take this class but von Kluge made it enjoyable. She really knows the material and is passionate about it. No book for the class. She gives A LOT of handouts and then lectures on top of them, so be in class. Tests are fair if you pay attention. One paper due at the end of semester, she's pretty lenient on how you complete it.
NO BOOK. There is an end paper that has to be 10-25 pages or you can do a project instead. She only gives handouts, and reads quotes that make no sense. Doesn't use power point. Her tests are VERY hard, you'll try to study only to find out there's ?'s on there that you have no idea where they came from. I recommend taking the other professor.
YOU NEED THE BOOK TO PASS THIS CLASS! She puts chapter ?'s at the end of every test that make up at least a quarter of it. She puts good curves on these exams and drops the lowest test score but DOES NOT drop the final. She gives out handouts and doesn't use Power Point.
I had her for Motivation and Emotion and she might be one of my favorite Professors. She is very experienced in the field and her lectures are really interesting. Doesn't use slides or allow computers (or phones) but uses projector. Her exams are a little hard, have to go to class and study to do well. She's hilarious and very real. Great Prof!
She is an intelligent person but not a very affective teacher. There's no book. She only lectures from handouts that don't make sense. Will spend 15 lecturing about something and then will say "you know this won't be on the test right?". Slightly temperamental. Makes it difficult to ask for help. Tests are difficult. I'd recommend other teacher.
I had this Professor for 356 & 453 during the pandemic. She is one of the sweetest professors! Thank you soo much for the awesome semester.
I had this Professor for 356 & 453 during the pandemic. She is one of the sweetest professors! Thank you soo much for the awesome semester. For 453 we used mindtap and it was a flawless program unlike other programs Ive used in the past (launchpad! It sucks!) during the pandemic
This person changed my understanding of humanity with her lectures. I'm writing this 20+ years later. Her enthusiasm for truth and unapologetic dedication to the scientific method for understanding human psychology and the human experience remain. Thank you, Sylvia, for providing such a rich foundation for understanding human life. And my life!
