learn 1980's technology in the 2000's
This is the worst professor I ever had. He is not clear about ANYTHING including (class lecture + project). His grading policy is unfair (50% -70% of people get a C, 1 to 2 people (out of 70 people) get an A. His exams are absolutely impossible to finish.
bad orgniazation, tough and unfriendly. He's even not a man in good manner. Never say hi when you meet him in the hallway.
He helps provide a useful foundation for testing concepts and even gives out past exams to aid students in their studies. These sample exams were very useful in exam preparation.
He expects you to make huge leaps of intuition at exam time, so even if you understood the lecture you might fail the tests, which only have a few questions. If you take his class be prepared to spend a lot of time studying, and be careful, your GPA might suffer.
It is nearly impossible to prepare well for his exams. Neither his practice exam or the assigned homework covered all the terms and ideas in the exam. With such a huge distribution of material, you must diligently read each chapter to succeed. He also has horrible hand-writing, his English lacks logic, and he cannot express complex ideas.
If you have to take this class, and he is the only class open, and the other two classes are full, and you need this class to graduate, and you HAVE to take this man or wait a semester...EVEN THEN do not take this class, do not take this man, wait! I'm serious!
He has an pretty bad accent, does not take attendance but has popquizes that are 20% of your grade. Most of his examinations require you to do something that has never been shown before in the lecture or in the homework
do. not. take. him. he doesn't show interest in the students' grades. his tests are ridiculously hard. he doesn't convey the material well. the only way i got the homework done was by looking at the back of the book. you might as well sleep through his class because you won't gain anything by being attentive.
Worst teacher I have ever had.
Do not take him ever. He is awful, bad accent, smale exams are useless, bad handwriting, hard exams, useless homeworks, the worst you can think of a professor in your nightmare is what this guys is. A shame to ut dallas.
s proff is one of the worst in ut dallas. He does not know how to teach. He is there to fail you. If u would like to ruin ur G.P.A, then go for it. Tke him at your own risk. Speaking from experience.
This man is a useless professor. He cares little for his students grades and less for the material he teaches. His tests are crazy to. On one students exam he took of 20 points because he didn't answer a question to the same level he answered a previous question even though it was more then other students who got full credit had done. Avoid him.
Professor impossible to understand, assigns stuff at random. Forces us to go over accreditation requirements instead of giving us time to work on the project he assigned. Would not want him for a class that was core to my major.
Took him for discrete math 1. I understand accents well, I do fine in 8:30am classes, but he is a terrible teacher. He goes over proofs, one easy example and then the rest are hard. Tests are those where if you haven't figured out tricks from studying the homework like no tomorrow, you are out of luck. Take Farage. Your welcome.
I was maintaining a 4.0 g.p.a until i met this guy. DO NOT TAKE HIM. If you do,then make sure your g.p.a is at high risk.Infact, you are dead! The issue with him is tht his lecture is not consistent with hw and hw is not AT ALL consistent with exams. Exams are damn hard.
DON'T DO IT. GPA killer right here. Unhelpful, gives ridiculous quizzes over stupid things that don't relate to the class at all... just do yourself a favor and stay away.
GPA killer, he does not care about grades, tests are ridiculous and require leaps in logic, hard to understand, not willing to help you out outside of class
He is the worst professor ever, you should never take his class.
His lectures are hard to understand because he has a thick accent and his handwriting is not legible. The homework isn't too bad, but the tests do not follow the homework. The tests are very difficult and do not expect a curve. I think he would be perfectly fine failing every student in the class. He doesn't check attendance, but gives pop quizzes.
I can tell the professor knows what hes talking about but i've never had a professor who made me more confused in lecture before. His Exams are extremely difficult being composed of only 4 free response questions so if you do not understand one question you fail.
HORRENDOUS ORGANIZATION. He hasn't released notes for a whole chapter yet or mislabeled it, I do not know, and his thick accent is UNINTELLIGIBLE even IF you attend his classes. Professor didn't even provide much effort to teach; He reads directly out of the textbook and if it helps, he uses slides from another professor.
the professor's accent is unintelligible. His tests are near impossible even with rigorous studying of the provided material. he alternates due dates on homework (which often takes 6+ hours) and sometimes posts it at the last minute making organization very difficult. His syllabus has almost nothing on it and he seems to make up policy as he goes
I asked him if I can take one extra class cuz I need to graduate one semester earlier. I can tell that he didn't care about my story, and I got denied. I understand that if you are doing poorly academically you will probably get denied, but I am a full-time junior student with 3.93GPA. And He refused to tell me the reason of denial.
He is not a good professor at all. He doesn't explain anything and expects you to know all the material, doesn't explain hw or exams well, and misses classes a lot. I did fine because I studied everything on my own from the textbook, but what pushed me over the edge was when he lowered me from an A- to a B for absolutely no reason at all.
Absolute horrible man. Avoid this man like you would Covid-19 and HIV. He dedicates his life to making his students miserable, maybe he is lashing out because he had an unfulfilling and depressed life and recognizes he's at the end of his road so he's trying to take out as many people with him. He was demoted for a reason. If i can put 0/5 I would.
Exams are 5 questions long, free response worth 60% of your final grade and there is only 2 of them. Class time varies from 20 minutes to 1hr and 30 minutes. He has a thick accent, and goes through material like we understand it, reads straight from powerpoint. All he does is read the screen and give verbal examples. STAY AWAY AT ALL COST!!!
I'm not kidding when I say that it would be better to not take discrete math this semester than to take this guy's class. He doesn't seem to care much about teaching, every semester ends consistently with most of the class getting below a C. Not only do you lose money, but you feel genuinely cheated out of learning anything
If I could give him a 0 I would. He doesn't know how to teach nor does he care. His handwriting is illegible and his accent gets extremely thick at some points where it's hard to comprehend the problem and what he's saying. His 2 Exams are 4 questions that are 30% of your grade each. Don't bother asking questions, he won't have an insightful answer
I WISH SOMEONE COULD WARN ME FIRST! If he's your only option left, just take it next semester! Test grades are 60 % of your grade, but the test he gives out is NOTHING related to any of the homework we did or the materials he covered in class. After the whole semester, I still don't know how to study for his class.
If you get him, drop out, probably better for your mental health. Hated this class, don't know how he is still teaching. Just one advice: run!
Funniest prof I have ever had! If you get him, chill out because you've already failed. No point in trying. Fail and retake or drop out!
I would give him a 0/5 if I could! He's everything you can think of in a bad professor: thick accent, bad lecturer, disorganized class, inaccessible outside class, and rude. Take only if you want to ruin your life! I'm serious!
Very very bad professor. You must ONLY read the textbook if you want to get at least a C. Trying to learn from him is impossible. But for real, take my advice...the TEXTBOOK is gold for this class.
Ik a lot of ppl come on here to talk abt how they didnt like their professors, maybe bc they didn’t like the course or it was too hard for them. But I must say, this guy is really really bad. I don’t know how he still has a job. Yea the rating on here isn’t accurate. He should have a ZERO rating. I’ve never seen someone do their job so bad.
This professor has a heavy accent and poor handwriting, but IMO the real issue is that he is not very great at teaching the material. He reads directly from the textbook, and does a poor job of explaining concepts. His tests are short (4-5 questions + sub-questions) and these tests are a majority of the grade. Trust the rating, avoid if possible.
Avoid at all costs! Especially, if you are a working student. HW is assigned randomly. The syllabus is useless, only useful info is exam dates, which taken in class. The exam also consists of only 4-5 free response conceptual questions (1-4 parts per question). Strong accent, lecture is reading PPT. Not tech savvy. You learn more reading the book.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! Hard to understand, not tech savvy, and HW is assigned spontaneously. The syllabus is like half a page, not helpful. MUST read the textbook to pass. Redeeming quality? He's funny.
Drop the class if you get him. You will learn nothing in the lectures, the tests, which only consist of four questions (some have multiple parts though) will decimate your grade, and everything is disorganized. If you can't drop him because you didn't listen to all the negative reviews, the textbook is your saving grace. Good luck.
Worst professor I ever had. Homework was posted randomly throughout the semester, the syllabus only had the exam dates, and attendance is mandatory for a part of your grade. Tests were extremely difficult and consisted of 4 questions which are all free response and conceptual. My advice if you want to at least get a C: Read The Textbook.
Not the professor to take if you dont want to suffer.
RUN. Take anything else. If he's the last option, wait until another semester or take the course at a community college. You may pass this class with a C because he has to curve his exam grades really hard, but _you will not gain an understanding of discrete math._
Don't take this guy if you want a good grade. Lectures are hard to understand and tests are 4-5 questions and free response.
Very tough professor. There are two exams and each exam is 33% of the grade. Prof doesn't understand what extra credit is. The professor is really hard to talk to and gets angry easily. Gives out a lot of 0's. Very bad experience overall.
I don't think this guy cares if you fail. Attendance is mandatory. If he asks the class a question and no one responds, he'll start yelling. Two exams with 4-5 FAQ questions that you'll probably have no clue about. This is one of the last professors you should ever take in your life. Just check his UTD grades to see yourself.
This professor will not help you gain a basic understanding in this class. He just goes through the slides without explaining in detail leaving students confused, and exams only have 4-5 FRQs. Mandatory attendance. Had to read the textbook in the end to pass this class.
By far the worst professor I have ever had
I was going to give him a 2 out of 5 because he definitely does try to teach and give examples, but he is simply just awful at teaching. Very antique style of teaching, don't even think bro knows how to work a computer. Around 5-6 assignments a week. Hard to follow/understand. Difficult exams with strict grading. Just don't take him, trust ratings.
You are not going to learn anything from him. You will have to taught your selves through the textbook and videos. He did go over the old test, however, it is not going to help you much. Honestly, take any other proffessor or take it in another college rather than taking him.
Get away as fast as you can!
Take his class to turn into diamond cuz pressure turns coal into diamonds :D. He is HARD. Challenging class
Simeon Ntafos may be the greatest educator I have every been given the opportunity of taking. He is very caring and makes sure everyone understands the concepts we learn. Tests are fairly challenging but he makes sure you do well. All in all if I could retake the same course again for the experience I would. The haters are just trolling.
I cannot for the life of me understand his accent. He also assigns ungodly amounts of homework via the online textbook. The "estimated time for completion" is a lie, and I usually take 3 times as long to actually complete the homework assigned, so something that is estimated to take 54 minutes can take up to 3 hours...
His handwriting was absolute chicken scratch--like trying to read a doctor's prescription. I also could not understand what he was saying. Goes so quickly through his slides I can' read or write anything. His lectures are useless because I can't hear, see, or read what he's trying to teach. Tests are worth 33% of your grade EACH. 66% in total.
Amazing professor. Articulates well. Hand-writing is beautiful. Very receptive and welcoming. I wish he taught every class. Cares and is there for you. Excellent and inspirational.
One of the professors of all time. Just read the whole textbook and you'll be good.
This is by far the hardest class I have ever taken. His lectures are so boring, as he just reads off of the textbook slides the ENTIRETY of class, so don't expect to learn anything during them. The few problem sections which are posted on elearning are helpful when studying for the exams. Overall his class is entirely self study and very hard.
TAKE ANY OTHER PROFESSOR PLEASE. this was second time taking the course and it did not get any easier. he reads off the slides and his examples arent very helpful. his hw is long and not useful for the exams which are the majority of the grade. i worked my butt off for my B and i honestly got extremely lucky with the midterm
It really depends on the course you're taking with him, but for CS 2305, he's difficult but not impossible. He assigns ridiculous amounts of homework and is hard to understand during class. He gets cranky often and takes attendance. Overall, he's manageable for an easy class.
Awesome guy. Class was easy and he grades lightly. Take him if you want to learn how to code and advance in the real world. Thank you Professor Ntafos
Steer clear. I worked too hard for my grade, and it was with 0% of the professors help. I have never been in a more dysfunctional class until this one. Quite literally the worst professor/teacher figure I have ever encountered in my entire educational career. If you are in a position where you have to take him the textbook will be your best friend.
Imma be honest, he did curve at the end but still he is a hard teacher.
No PowerPoint, writes on the whiteboard small and hard to read. Hours of homework each week. Tests are short and very specific even though they cover half of a semester's worth of info per test. He changed the grading syllabus halfway through semester with no notification. Hard to understand and doesn't use microphone. Hours of homework each week.
i'm not even done with this class yet, and we had about 200 problems for homework due this week and another 160 due by the beginning of next week. the rest of next week's homework hasn't even been posted yet but i'm sure there will be more. it's as if he thinks people who take his class have NOTHING else to do or accomplish with their time.
Take at Collin if you get this professor. I couldn't understand anything and I just had to read the textbook. I understood nothing from this class, TA or anything. This is *not* a free class but doable if you work hard.
If this prof. is ever your last choice. RUN THE OTHER DIRECTION. Please do yourself a favor for any class with him and take it with a better professor next semester.
Took him for 4384. Grades very, very hard, doesn't even speak in English half the time, and changes the homeworks before they're due, but doesn't change the due date. Incomprehensible too. No curves either.
bad at being a teacher
Such a joke, honestly.
If you take him, just know you're going to be learning all the material on your own time, and finding your own resources. His lectures are incomprehensible. He does not prepare you for the homework questions and exam. His 1 redeeming quality is he doesn't yell at/berate people, which is more than I can say about a few other UTD professors.
Lectures are hard to digest, and he seems to repeat the easiest lectures rather than the difficult content. Exams are difficult and assignments don't prepare you for them. You'll spend a significant portion of time out of class learning the material.
Difficult to understand, disorganized lectures, attendance is worth 10% of the grade, very difficult exams. Do yourself a favor and pick literally any other professor.
I wish I could select even a few of the tags like "respected" "accessible outside class" "clear grading criteria" but this guy is worse than just staring at dry wall. If he talks to you, you wonder if he's asking you a question, saying something to you, or just on something. I think he's probably the worst professor/teacher in my life.
"Glonkt rebuzzle the quarnsplint, but orth f the dravver wun't pre-snergle the floobulated cramjinks." Direct transcription of lecture audio.
There is nothing sadder than having to deal with someone who needs to pack it away. Its totally unfair to the students.
Bro has dementia
Trying to go to office hours is a nightmare, as he often prefers to have 1 on 1 meetings in his office with students where he locks the door and only lets one student in at a time. As a guy, I find this utterly frustrating that I feel like all the girls get special treatment, and that the professor only offers extra credit to them.
If Ntafos has a million haters I'm one of them. If he has 1000 haters I'm one of them. If he has 1 hater it's me. If he has 0 haters it means I have left this world. If the world is against Ntafos I am with the world, if the world is for Ntafos, I am against the world
I have 3 friends that switched majors because of him
The WORST professor you will ever have in your life I PROMISE YOU please stay away for your mental health, you will rethink all of your life with him, you will not understand a single thing from his lectures he barely speaks english and he speaks in a low tone and don't get me started on his chicken scratch handwriting.
I took him cus he was the only one available DON'T take this man under any circumstances, not one positive thing I i took from this class and i attended every single one of his lectures. I have his final tomorrow and the exam review he gave us has answers wrong and the other half where he wants us to solve it no one in the class has a clue. (pt2)
DO NOT TAKE. He is a disservice to students. His memory is nonexistent. Spent 20 min on a notes paper, went to another paper for 2 min, then went back to the 1st paper to cover it again like ir was new. If you notice literal dementia or incoherency, REPORT TO THE DEPARTMENT. There can't be action w/o evidence. Strongly believe he needs to be fired.
I could only wish to make this much money being so awful at something. Anyways, real review: Lectures you really can't get much out of. Messy handwriting, mumbles (accent isn't too too bad imo). Exams weren't bad, just review the (copied?) notes; you're fine if you care enough 30/30/30/10: Exams, HW, Attendance No curve (tentative but unlikely)
Everything said about this Professor is true. This guy has been making a career off of being a bad professor.HES BEEN DOING IT SINCE BEFORE I WAS EVEN BORN!His classes are difficult to understand and he just reads off notes word-for-word.I often found myself being more confused from attending his lectures than if i were to just skip them.DONOT TAKE
Ntafos is one of the most notorious professors for a reason, lectures leave you more confused than certain. Has a serious slur when speaking which leads to him being very hard to understand and shows signs of actual memory problems where he will double review a section of notes as if he has never seen it. Would not recommend experiencing yourself.
The difficulty of this course makes the final DLC boss of Elden Ring look easy.
Grading: 30% Mid term, 30% Final, 10% Attendance, 30% Homework Although his lectures aren't the best, he's honestly not as bad as people make him out to be. He is a reasonable professor and if you're proactive and respectful he's approachable and willing to help. His exams are more difficult than the typical UTD exams, but he grades leniently
Ntafos might be the worst professor I have ever had the displeasure of taking at UTD (and that's difficult to top). His lectures are impossible to understand, yet mandatory to attend. When you ask a question, he does not give you an answer, and instead goes on an incomprehensible tangent ending in "does that answer your question?". Horrific.
Inspired me to see who not to be.
Do not take this professor. Reads hand written slides word for word, the slides are wrong, and the teacher cannot figure out the solution to the basic exercises being taught.
I really don't understand all of the hate this professor gets. He is a nice guy, and knows his stuff well. He does have a strong (greek?) accent that can be tough for some people. A lot of lazy students don't put in any effort and expect to get a good grade in a difficult subject. They complain that his 20% test curve is too low...
ignores emails, would not excuse a hw even if a family member died, talks in a heavy accent, doesn't use a textbook or his own slides, doesn't understand the slides he uses, somehow still has a job here
In a Discord server for the general course, there is a help and coping channel for people who have him as their professor. He hit a student with a rolled-up paper right before our exam started, and we were all in disbelief. Just please avoid it, if you can't, get ready to learn McGraw Hill buddy.
I heard all the things said about this professor, that he is the most hated man on all of campus, etc. I went into this class expecting the professor to be a terrible person, but the only real problem is that he is just ineffective at teaching. HWs/exams are extremely difficult and there is a significant curve to compensate. Read the textbook
Where do I start. Now, Ntafos is not some despicable human being. However, the same cannot be said for his teaching or interactions with students through email/office hours. The structure of the class, his grading and even his TA is as incompetent and confusing as it gets. Sure he curves enough to pass, but the stress you will feel is unmatched...
taking his class is self suicide. if u need to graduate and have no other choice then delay your graduation.
He might have kept forgetting stuff but at least he treated us with respect. Be prepared to self study alot because he doesn't make sense too often in person. To be honest, if you do your due diligence and self-study, exam questions will be fine. Grade gets curved hard cause everyone does so bad. Not saying he's good. But definitely over-hated.
Whatever the guy said on December 11th was a fing lie. Final averages were in the 30s and the curve was 3 more points to the final grade.
This man is simply bad at his job and should really consider doing something else with his time
