I would label him as condescending yet motivating. His exams are hard, but for some reason, I thought the final was easy. 3 Exams (20 pts ea) 1 final (34 pts) + HW (6 pts). Exams determine your grade. You need practice from the previous exams posted. I made A- with 16/18/15/34/5. Its a lie that final exam score can be used to replace lowest test.
Dr. Bott is great! On the 1st day of class, he tells you exactly what to do to receive an A in his class. Do everything he says! The class requires you to to work hard, and if you work hard enough, you will get an A! Do the old test that he puts online, DO YOUR HW MULTIPLE TIMES, read the book for clarification. Know concepts! Trust me. I got an A.
when he teaches you will understand chemistry, you will LEARN!! but his lectures will not guarantee a pass on his tests! THEY ARE REALLY HARD. don't mix in more hard classes with this one like bio/calc(take one, not both). you will NEED to spend lots of time on this class. IT IS NOT A JOKE.
You have to study for tests, no cramming. Listen to what he says to get an A, and you'll get it.
He is, in my opinion, a really good professor, can piss you off at times, but knows how to teach effectively. His tests are doable if you study in advance and know the concepts well. Not the hardest or impossible class, but expect to devote a lot of time to it to do as well as you want.
Recently, his tests are more linked to concepts compared to the old exams, thus making it harder! however, he is a very generous prof with the grade that you get. if you work hard, and he sees it through the multiple hw attempts as well as coming to class everyday, he will boost your grade. t
He is a very motivating teacher, don't get me wrong. He sets unrealistic extra credit, lies that the final exam will replace the lowest test, lies a lot about all this extra credit. Doesn't prepare you well enough for the course. Youtube and google taught me more. I got a C- after sleepless nights.
He knows his chemistry, but I felt like he just wanted to trick us on tests instead of just giving us chemistry questions that would just test our knowledge. His tests are extremely HARD so I wouldn't take this class unless ur happy with working ur butt off and taking a C in the class. He'll tell u that there is extra credit, THAT's A LIE.
Very difficult professor. If you have have a good concept on CHEM1331, will be relatively OK in his class if you study enough. His tests are extremely difficult. You will need to have memorized all concepts and every exception, because they will be there. He is a wonderful professor and I learned so much chemistry from him during class
He is simply amazing. my favorite teacher at UH by far. Just go to class and pay attention, and you will do great. Guranteed grade. He's hilarious, and kept class interesting. Chemistry sucks, but if you have to take it DEFINITELY TAKE BOTT. (:
He's an excellent teacher, but he's made the new tests extremely hard. You really, really have to know your concepts because his test questions are nothing like the ones on the weekly homeworks. There's a lot of extra credit, but they're more of a class effort. Most of my class always forgot and we never got any. Take really good notes!
Dr. Bott is an awesome teacher, extra credit does not have to be a class effort, you just simply have to put your own effort into going into his office and working out ways to earn it. overall, he is the most interesting professor I have ever had. Hopefully he will be teaching at UH for a long time.
Challenging classes build character, this one with absurdly difficult tests and its cryptic grading scale creates cynical students. Bott does seem to care about his students so hopefully he considers restructuring his class to make it challenging within bounds. As it is now, hard work and firmly grasping the material does not equate to a good grade
Motto of his class was 'if you screwed up one homework or test, then one football ticket equals to one forgiveness'. You can take this class if you are ready to sell football tickets to your friends and relatives in order to buy your grade. I made an A- because I studied hard. Good lectures but I'd never take his class again.
very clear very fair. very thorough. study. pay attention and you will be fine one of the best prof at the university.
The class is not "easy" and a lot of people say his new tests are impossible, but really just READ the book like he TELLS you to, understand DON'T MEMORIZE concepts, and do multiple hw's and an A (or whatever grade you want) is possible.
Bott is your best bet for chemistry classes; he knows his stuff. This class was very challenging and you really have to apply yourself, but A's and B's are definitely possible. Study your concepts and do as many problems as you can and you will do fine. Take his advice for test preparation seriously and go to all the review sessions too.
Very nice kind professor, he loves what he does and his teaching skills reflect that, I advise anyone to take him! You will need to study a lot but making a A is possible !
Probably the hardest freshman course out there, he says so himself. You have to put a lot of effort into this class. GO TO EVERY CLASS EVERYDAY! Practice homework on blackboard 5> times and understand everything to the fullest. You should be fine :)
Awesome professor. Never have I met a professor that deeply cares about his students! But you do have to do your part. I was not too fond of science but I managed to get a B in the class. Do your part and go to class. Take notes. Do homework. Exams are at CASA. Sometimes exams are the homework. And do paper on an element! And wear red ;)
Not a easy class, but he is a really good professor. If you study hard, and do a lot of practice problems, you can get an A.
If you took chem 1 at a community college/ haven't taken chem 1 in a year, then please do not take Mr. Bott. I made 100s on all the homework and read the book and still ended up having to drop his class because his tests are horrible.
Hilarious, easy class. Lots of EC. Tons of school spirit..this teacher is one of a kind
Best chem professor ever to get an A get 100% on all hw there really easy go to class take all the easy quizes and get atleast 85 and above on test and its a guaranteed A. Do the extra credit and u can sleep soundly at night. P.S. no Frenzzys toe rags
Easily the best chemistry professor I've ever had. Very easy to understand, simple tests, and he's utterly hilarious.
I don't wear my seat belt driving to school because I want to die before I can make it to this class.
Be ready to study very hard for this class in order to get a good grade. His tests are horrible !!
Hands down one of the best professors out there. Don't listen to everyone saying he's hard. Just do what he tells you to do, SHOW UP TO CLASS AND TRY. I was never good at chemistry but he made it easier to understand. He gives you the grade you deserve. HE doesn't lie about the extra credit. Try and you'll be fine, trust me.
Attendance and school spirit are very important to him in his class as well as effort. Great teacher overall.
Best professor I've had so far! Yes, his test are extremely tricky but if you actually do what he tells you then you'll be fine. Do LOTS of practice problems cause they really help. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities so take advantage of them. An A is definitely possible cause I ended up getting an A.
Pros: British accent. Great school spirit. Guaranteed grade can be earned and raised. Easily reached by email. Come to class, do your assignments, and you're guaranteed to pass. Final is optional if you meet the predetermined requirements. You'll learn lots of chemistry. Cons: All tests including final are at CASA. In conclusion, GO COOGS!!
4 Words: Best Professor On Campus. Hands down. His lectures are entertaining and really helps explain Chemistry very clear so you know whats going on. He provides review sessions every friday which helps on the Homework. Be prepared to do loads of problems from the book (i did alot from practice) and READ AHEAD OF TIME if you want to keep up. Got A
Awesome teacher, funny, effective, and has more school spirit than the student body!!!
very funny professor.Bott made chemistry worth going to especially on fridays.make sure to wear red and attend school activities to earn extra credit.homework is easy. dont buy the book!!!!! i never used mine and still passed the class.
Prof. Bott teaches really well. But the only thing is, his tests are extremely HARD! really really hard.
Go to class. AWESOME PROFESSOR. teaches you alot about the school, and he's a really funny guy. tests are kinda hard but just go on his website and look at the old tests, they are very similar to his current tests. attendance mandatory
Go to his class and you'll do well. Attendance is mandatory. His tests are tricky bu not impossible. If you go through his old tests, they're pretty similar. The book will benefit you only in the concept questions. Calculation question, he pretty much go over them in class. He has reviews every Friday, Make sure you go, they're very helpful.
Good professor, you have to attend all clases and the tests arent easy but if you do all the work it is possible to get an automatic grade that commonly turns out to be about a be or so. It is a good class. I enjoyed it and learned a lot.
very good professor! he gives lots of extra credit! very funny! class worth taking!don't CHEAT!!!
Dr. Bott is an awesome professor and his class is worth taking. Believe me, I had no interest in Chemistry but I needed another science. But I learned a lot and I can honestly say that I am going to miss his class. Always go to class, at least try, and wear Cougar RED! :)
Bott is a great professor hands down learned alot in this class go to class and just do what he says and you'll pass with a good grade this class is worth taking even if you're not good at chemistry wear red on Fridays and there's always extra credit take Bott.
As long as you keep up with the material and moreover understand what you are learning (not just memorize how to do certain problems) you'll earn the grade you deserve :) Overall Dr. Bott is the best teacher on campus no one can compare.
Dr. Bott is a great professor, and he makes it very easy to do well in his class. There are ample opportunities for extra credit. It's an easy A if you pay attention in class and do all the review questions he provides.
Almost half of grade based on attendance and extra credits. He wants to be rate as good prof, so will try hard to push students participate. Specially, students will have really big credit if willing to buy football tickets when he offer (spring semester). Watch if he sells no ticket at all. Highly reccommend for students not good at chemistry.
Pretty good professor overall. I like British people, so he was rather amusing. My only complaints really were the lack of clarity on the grading scale and the fact that the class seems a bit more geared to pre-med, pre-pharm, and predent students than other majors. His suggested study habit is a bit much if you have other problems working classes!
He has an accent. he's stubborn, and don't know sometimes we can change. Summer school is five weeks, but he treats it same as regular term, as a result, i felt stressed when taking him in summer because there are sooooo.. much work. One more thing, his handwriting is horrible, so it's hard to take notes.
SUPER AWESOME CRAZY BRITISH TEACHER!Dr.Bott is truly the best chem teacher. I hated chem 1, but loved it in his class. He really knows his stuff.Come to class everyday because he does not post his notes, never come late, do as much extra credit, and wear red! Tests can be difficult. In class quizes are more for attendance than anything else.
Pretty strict person. And HANDWRITING, HANDWRITING, HANDWRITING...HORRIBLE!!!
He is good at teaching but you have to study a lot. If you don't like chemistry never ever take this class. So, many things to do. Finally I gave up to study because there are so many things to do. Personally I don't recommend it.
Best teacher in the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is really that great.
I did terrible in chemistry while I was in high school. Came to class and he was VERY clear about EVERYTHING. Very helpful as well to help you understand and remember concepts. 3 test, optional final, and his homework and old tests help a lot for preparation for his tests (close to being exact!). You will not regret choosing his class at all
I wish all professors were like him. Lectures are crystal clear, & he makes sure everyone understands. Class is intellectually stimulating, and you will have to work hard to get that A. The book sucks, but read ahead! Pop quizzes every class. Attendance affects grade. If you can, avoid taking other classes when taking in summer.
Took during the summer and Bott is an amazing professor and is passionate about chemistry. Yes, his handwriting is sloppy at times but he is very open to questions and even gives extra credit if you ask him to clarify his writing so never be afraid to ask. He loves to give out extra credit and is pretty funny which does not hurt. I made an A.
Dr.Bott is surely the best professor for chemistry at UH. Always encouraging and person to look upto. He always makes a point that the students understand the material very well. Always take notes(very helpful), attend every class and follow all his guidelines on how to study. Don't hesitate to take him. Also, makes student participate in UH stuff.
lectures are fun but tests are not. My cousin took him before and have to drop it, I did not believe her and take it and now what i have to drop it too. His test is extremely difficult, tricky, use complicated words in the test. I like Chem, and i always make an A in Intro and Chem 1 but his class destroyed my interest in Chem. :(
What can I say, this is little more than I expected from UH chemistry class, this is more like graduate research class where you must learn concepts and be able to apply them in real solutions. Most of people in his class will fail or drop, so I really don't see why he makes it so difficult on people whose majors are not Chemistry or Premed lol
Ok I'm smart so I can't believe I got a B in his class. I've never been good at chem but still. IDK why everyone likes him he's so obnoxious. I guess I thought it was going to be more of a blowoff like everyone says but it's not. Study for his tests and you'll be fine. I just don't like him, and I prob should've paid more attention. Class is mand.
Hi mr. Bott, I know you are reading this right now...well here's your rating, this is what I would give you sir in return to what you have given me, nothing. Entire chemistry department over there at UH have serious ethical issues. I will not go into these here since there is limit for 350 words per rating, you fail hundreds of people, please stop!
This class stresses me out so much.I study constantly.I do very well on the the hwrks,I have a workshop for the class, and I have never missed a lec,I also form a study group before each test, and we all make C's on his test.He makes them impossible. He wants you to be a Chem major! He enjoys seeing his seats become empty as students drop the class.
Bott is a great teacher. As long as you are ready to study and practice , you will do fine in his class. He offers reviews every friday which helps a lot with the actual test. His explanations are pretty clear and he makes class enjoyable. I would totally recommend him.
Homework online is pretty easy. Great professor. Use the old tests to study from, he reuses questions. One paper about an element. Bott has TONS of school pride, don't be that obnoxious kid wearing an A&M shirt, it won't be pretty.
I LOVE DR BOTT! He is easily the most engaging professor I have ever had - he is a very good lecturer, manages to make all concepts easy to understand. BUT-make sure you attend class (it's mandatory), take good notes, and LISTEN. You won't get an A without trying, but it's possible to get one. And a plus: you actually learn something in this class!
He's the worst professor. His lectures don't even go with his exams.
I love him as a person, but hate him as a professor. I've never felt so prepared for tests, and then end up with 40s and 60s! He is constantly trying to trick you on tests. Reviews and homework's don't compare to the difficulty of his exams. Brilliant exams if you're a rocket scientist. I seriously recommend taking at comm college and transferring.
Best professor I've ever had, his exams are extremely difficult and highly conceptual. Makes you think hard but he covers all the more important things in class. His classes are enjoyable also, he's a funny guy. Not easy but if you want to actually learn something take Dr. Bott.
I'm convinced the guarenteed grade he talks about doesn't even exist. I went to every class, but two and missed two homework assignments out of probably 10 and I received a 10. He's not fair at all.
test are insanely hard! enough said
He makes this class so much harder than it should be for a freshman level class. Its nearly impossible to pass this class if you are working. Exams are super tricky and homework has no relevance to exams. He is understanding but if you are premed there is no mercy. So be prepared!
do not take his class if you are a bio/chem/premed/preopt/pre(anything) he will destroy your gpa
no extra credit, he played psychological games on us :/
I wish i saw all these negative reviews before i decided to take him. Why does he have any good reviews? Any professor who boasts about failing 55% of their class should NOT be teaching.
if he spent as much time teaching chemistry as he did telling aggie/UT jokes, maybe everyone wouldnt fail his exams. his grades reflect his teaching.
Bott is terrible. His grading seems arbitrary and undefined. Told us that he purposely keeps us in the dark on quiz grades and I have yet to see any of my earned "extra credit" and "major extra credit"
Awful professor. Does not care about students and will not hesitate to fail anyone. Trust me, take the class somewhere else, you will not regret it
I really like Dr. Bott. He has a lot of pride in UH and I love that. Our school is awesome! His tests are a little on the difficult side. I got a B in the class without too much trouble. I would take him again if I had the chance. If you're taking him for Chem 1301, here's my advice: give an honest effort, and DO NOT cheat!!
Horrible Professor. Will not tell you where your grades come from and will miscount your quizzes.
rude and disrespectful. literally calls himself the king.... lectures are overrated. you can learn the information better in 1/4 the time because he spends lectures talking about irrelevant things around campus. useless.
Overall, I liked his teaching. He really did help me understand chemistry in a simpler way. His tests are hard i admit, but not impossible to do well in. In reality, for this class you'll just have to devote yourself to do alot of practice problems. I used my own chem txtbook and really reviewed through. He really is part of the UH spirit!
Dr.Bott is a great proffesor! He really does care for his students by trying to make the most difficult concepts in chem look so simple. His tests are difficult but unlike what other ppl might say, it is possible to get a good grade! I mean just look at ppl who were able to get an A for the course! Its not impossible, just requires ALOOOT of work.
This is a very hard class, but Dr. Bott is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He cares WAY more than he let's on. Do EXACTLY what he tells you to and you will succeed. Read ahead of class. Make notes from book and class, rewrite to combine. Go to tutoring. Do homeworks until you get a 100- unlimited tries! Take CHEM I at UH!!!
Dr. Bott is an amazing professor, but truthfully that won't help you a lot in this class. Most of the work is independent, read, reread, take notes, rewrite notes and when exam time comes do as many exams as possible because that'll be the ONLY way you'll make an A or even pass this class. If you can't do what I just said, take it at HCC.
I paid a lot of money to attend UH for a higher education and to learn chemistry. Not to buy a football ticket. This professor will concentrate more on you attending events around campus than learning chemistry. I do not recommend him
Class and material isn't too bad. Really easy once you get the hang of it. Professor makes it much more difficult and is obnoxious, but don't be intimidated, just ignore him.
He's annoying...but that's probably because he's British. He can't help it.
The class sucks and it is boring. Guaranteed grade is true. If you do as he says and you show up to class every day you pass.
Take him! Easiest class ever and when he accuses the class of cheating.... Do not admit to it. It's a prank. But he's awesome!
Definitely not the easiest class you'll take but if you put in enough effort (show up to class, review sessions, read the book), you will get the best grade possible. Make sure you come to class and write down great notes because for me, the textbook wasn't the best studying tool, rather it was what was mentioned in class. Good luck!
He is hard to understand at times but if you go to class and take good notes you can pass
The best professor I've ever had! Don't listen to people who say he's rude. He tries to be funny and engaging in a weird way and I guess people mistake that and think he's mean. If you do what he tells you and work hard you should be fine. If you don't then expect and bad grade because this course isn't supposed to be easy. Study and do problems.
This class is so easy because he wants people to take it so he can fill up massive auditoriums so he can get paid more. Yeah he's pretty funny. A lot of school pride. A lot of my friends thought he was annoying. Take it for the simple fact that it is easy.
Bott is awesome. He's witty and doesn't take bull, which is why some don't like him. He takes his time with the material which enables his students to not feel overwhelmed with information, but this method of teaching is sometimes mistaken with wasting class time. But trust me, he knows what he's doing. If you make an effort you'll be fine.
By far, the best prof I've ever taken in college. Don't listen to the "toerags" that say he's terrible. Go to class, take notes, and study! He likes students that actually put forth effort into his class, that's why you are able to pass. Most memorable prof you will tell your children about. And don't EVER wear other school's clothing to his class.
Honestly, Dr.bott is a good professor however his chem 2 class is EXTREMELY hard. If you have to take it here choose him he's the best out of the other two. But I would highly recommend taking this at a community college this class requires tons of work and chances are it will screw your GPA. Material is not that hard but the test are impossible.
If you actually care about doing well, you will do well. Listen to his advice, go to review sessions, do the homework problems multiple times and most of all, PAY ATTENTION. His tests are not at all impossible, just require thinking. Best chemistry professor I have ever had.
He lives up to the hype! YOU'LL LOVE IT as long as you go to class.Initially, I did not do what to expect but his hilarious way of teaching will keep you entertained and focused. If you need "baby" chem and want to be exposed to a strong sense of cougar pride, Dr.Bott is easily your best bet!
Hated & sucked at chem before this class, now I understand chem well & love it.Attendance is mandatory, but makes sense because textbooks aren't required & tests are derived directly from the notes. Tries to help you succeed as long as you're putting in the effort too. Made an A even though I never made higher than a B+ on all the tests. Amazing.
Dr. Bott is hands down the best professor I have ever had. He's funny and intelligent. Chem 1332 is a hard class. Go into it with the knowledge that you need to study hard to get an A. But he makes the class a lot easier, he explains things in simple terms and he's nice if you need help. DEFINITELY TAKE HIM.
Dr. Bott is a GREAT professor! Best chemistry professor, and professor overall, at UH! TAKE HIM! You will need to work hard to receive a good grade in his class, but it is well worth it. He knows how to teach very well and makes chemistry a lot easier to understand. Tests are hard, but study and you will do well!
A MUST TAKE PROFESSOR ! Don't miss class unless u have some 'nasty personal problem' which he takes into account while assigning final grades. Dont' miss homeworks, make a 100 and study your hardest!I made an A, and I had a HORRIBLE chem background..Bott is the best professor I had in my freshman year! btw, be ready to visit a lotta college events!
Based on the materials of chem 2, this is a hard class for sure. However, he is a great lecturer with easy explanations. But, he makes you go to lots of events for extra credits which you will really need since he offers quiz first 5 mins every class( are y sure y dont miss it?) Test is amazingly hard which will bring y through all emotional levels
Chemistry 2 is not an easy class. Dr Bott is an excellent teacher. You will understand everything you need to know if you attend his class. My advice: Read before class the whole chapter (bc u will get quizzed on it). Do not leave your homework for the last minute. Do practice test and practice problems and then you will be fine.
Dr. Bott is an amazing professor! He explains really difficult concepts in an understandable way. Go to class and do the homework. It may be difficult, but do it until you get a 100 because that will show you care if your test grades aren't stellar. He gave me a letter grade above what I deserved because he saw I tried. Hard, but worth it! (:
BY FAR THE BEST TEACHER I HAVE TAKEN AT UofH HE HAS AMAZING SCHOOL PRIDE! He is a great lecturer you actually do learn alot about Chemistry if you pay attention he makes the material understanding. He certainly sparked my interest in chemistry! I really enjoyed his class! & his cougar pride!
He's by far THE BEST chemistry teacher I've ever had in my life. He explains everything so well. As long as you understand his explanations in class about the concepts, then you should be able to do well on his tests. This class requires a LOT of studying but if you put in the right amount of effort, it is possible to do well.
Dr. Bott is exactly what a professor should be. It was such a joy to go to class everyday, and he was so willing to help! I am a comm major so I have no interest in chemistry but Dr. Bott made me like it! I would definitely recommend him!
There is a reason why people email him to ask to be added to a full class. He is simply one of the best professors at UH. He isnt the easiest nor the hardest but he does his best to prepare you for the exam. It doesn't mean that you can slack though. Study hard because you'll need to retain the info for later classes and MCAT,PCAT,OAT,DAT,etc
Best teacher at UH. Has tons of pride for our school and encourages it with the extra credit attendance to sporting events and such. Really clear, the tests are impossible but curves as long as you do the homework. Wear red on Friday, and don't be the idiot he calls out in class for walking across people to get a seat. Sit on the stairs.
The hardest class I have taken, yet the most interesting and fun to go to. This prof is amazingly easy to understand! I TRUELY enjoyed coming to class!DO EVERYTHING HE SAYS as in rewrite your notes, go to the review sessions.. It's so cheesy to say, but this class was a thrilling experience, lol:) He can be a little rude sometimes. TAKE THIS CLASS
He is an amazing teacher, he is really good at breaking the information down for us to understand, which in Chem i believe its very necessary. Take notes, attendance is mandandatory. he's funny and he has a British accent, and DO NOT wear clothing from any other university, not unless you want to get called out and be boo'd haha.
Took Dr.Bott in the summer session and boy can I say it kicked my butt! There is a lot to study and you have to study it fast, but at the end of the day I'm glad I took his class. He is a phenomenal teacher, dedicated and passionate to his students. Hilarious, made me laugh even when I was down. Take his class he is an amazing person all together!!
Took Dr.Bott for Chem 2 and I can truly say he cares about his students. Just show up to class, listen to his rules, REVIEW SESSIONS, and go do as many extra credits as possible.
Awesome and witty professor, but you will need to put in the extra effort. He tries to inject school spirit into his classes, and his comedy might not be to everyone's taste, but he doesn't go over board like some other professors I've had. Usually its a joke midway through class to relax people before we keep on going.
What you learn in his class will take you far. I'm currently a P-1 in pharmacy school and I am destroying my pharmaceutics class, which is basically just a review of intermolecular forces, acids and bases, mixtures (solutions, suspensions, etc) from a pharmacy perspective. Seriously, invest your time into this class...you won't regret it.
Everything good you hear about Bott is 100% true. Hands down the best professor I have ever had. Don't miss class or walk in late. He WILL embarrass you. TONS of school spirit and a true love for his students and their education. You haven't experienced UH until you have taken Bott!
Dr. Bott is awesome!! I would not say that I am great with science, but Dr. Bott makes it easier and interesting! Do the homework, and you will do great on the exams. I have more respect for Dr. Bott than any other professor at the university.
Dr. Bott is an amazing professor!! There was a 'book' for the class, but it wasn't necessary. At first he might come off hard, but he is really a cool prof. i have learned more about Chemistry in this one semester than i did a whole year in HS. he knows his stuff, and doesn't take BS from anybody! Its an easy fun class, you wont regret taking it.
He is great! His class is so fun and you actually learn a lot. Attendance is mandatory he take is by daily quizzes, he is strict but how else is he going to control 600 students? He is very clear on how his class runs. He wants you to get involved and gives you incentives to do so. Its great if you are new to UH because you get into school spirit.
Best professor ever! TAKE HIM! He explains things well, makes sure everyone understands, and is very very caring. Lectures are entertaining and engaging. Cant wait to take him again!
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR for your natural science yes you may think chem is hard however he has a guaranteed grade as long as you attend class you will have a good grade in this class he is really funny and you will enjoy the course i really had a great semester going to class
Considering we supply his paycheck, you would think he would be more helpful. Refuses to discuss grades. Spends more time talking about school pride than teaching what's on exams. Prepare to learn everything from the book. What you learn in class is a snippet of what is on the exam. VERY disappointed.
Best review ever 4 this class: "I don't wear my seat belt driving to school because I want to die before I can make it to this class." Read ALL reviews before adding class. Has NO idea how to interact with students. Expects students to not have a life outside of this class. Rude and degrading. ZERO empathy for anybody who isnt a chem major.
One of the best professors at UH. Yes, the class is really difficult. But he gives you basically ever resource and tool you could need to pass. And he makes his expectations very clear. You could only fail by being incredibly lazy.
Cares a lot about the school, he's entertaining. However, he's not helpful and his exams are difficult. He expects us only focus on chemistry and nothing else. Nags about random stuff in class, curses in class;makes me very uncomfortable. Do not take him, I received a C when I asked to discuss grades, he would not.
Yes, you can pass easily. Meaning getting a 'd.' Hard to get an a or b when the exams are impossible and u dont have the material to study for them. nothing like homework or lectures. book isnt too helpful. calls people who dont drop his "survivors." Seems too happy most kids dont fare well in his class. Wouldnt recommend
Horrible professor. He cares more about the school than his students. I didn't do bad in the class, but it wasn't cause of him that I did good. I would not recommend him at all. Take chem 2 at another college or university.
Concepts are made super clear and less difficult than how they seem. However, this is a very time consuming class and he expects a lot from students (homeworks, reading, practice problems). Difficult to do it all. You will work your butt off, know concepts well, and will probably end up with half the grade you deserve because exams are so tricky.
I feel like pink floyd's "brick wall" was written for 'teachers' like this. Prime example of a professor who goes into the profession to fail, not teach. Dont waste your time, money, mental health, and gpa. enough said.
Dr. Bott's CHEM 1332 class is very difficult. I was making up an incomplete in this course this past fall and he was very understanding and helpful. He DOES care for his students (the ones that attend class & try their hardest on exams/hw). It is evident at the end of the semester. What other professor is willing to discuss final grades? No one.
I had a few professors in my time @ college who would talk about grades or concerns freely. One professor this semester actually right before the final. Auditorium size classroom as well. I prefer a class where my grade is based more on knowledge earned in class vs flying by on attendance. But that's just me. botts not my cup of tea. cheers
This class was very tough. I would not recommend this professor if you want to keep your gpa high!!!!
He isn't the most available professor, but he sure is a dedicated one. He rants on about UH pride almost every week, which is inspiring. This course is full of math and problem solving so get a trusty calculator. Test are hard at least 5 problems that you never see on homework and practice exams. I don't know why people complain about that.

I am one Simons PhD graduates. As a mentor in Chemistry his philosophy was - make your own mistakes. Also learn from them. I no small part he contributed to my success in life. Hats off Simon and go UH!
I'm not gonna say a lot... Don't take him. Just no.
Bott used to be a great professor. He taught what you needed to know, kids learned without the pressure of failing. Bott was good at one point. Now, it is like Bott wants you to fail. He purposely wants kids to fail, and he finds pleasure in it. He's a great teacher, but nothing will help you prepare for the tests.
All I'm going to say is, out of 600 kids, when 200-300 fail your tests, that truly reflects your ability of teaching.
teacher is to busy talking about school pride and hating on AnM and Rice that he forgets to focus on CHEMISTRY! we gave the school money to learn chemistry not the rivalry between schools. when more then 50% fail your exams, you should really reconsider how you make your exams, it reflects your ability as a teacher.
Exams were exactly like the homework and he made the class pretty easy. Everyone says it's hard and he wants to fail you but they are just stupid; it's not very difficult to make a B or higher in his class, especially since he gives curves and extra credit. I had no trouble making A's on all tests and homework by studying the night before. Easy A.
Something is wrong with person that wrote the comment below. Bott is a funny with (his recycled jokes) and does a nice job promoting school spirit. BUT he is a BAD chem professor. So bad, that he wouldn't even dare to say the class passing ave on the 1st test. Why? Because only 3/500+ got a 100. Easy test?
He teaches the basics in class and even if you read the book, the test questions are 7X harder. How to forget how rude he is? Picking on that girl in class because she simply had to use the restroom or making those unnecessary comments 'with a double meaning' about Dr. Khator? I don't understand why people don't say the truth. BOTT IS OVERRATED!
Horrible Professor! and and Overrated one. He does not teach and expects the students do learn everything on their own. Talks nonsense most of the time and is rude.
Favorite teacher at UH. He has a lot of personality and actually makes the class enjoyable. I never took chemistry prior to his class and was worried, but I am very pleased. He is not the teacher for you if you get offended easily or don't know how to take a joke.
To be honest, I hated Bott at first. Hated Chemistry too. Hated his school pride, haha. But he rubs off on you. He's done this for a long time, so even if you're an idiot with math and science, you can do this class. He comes off gruff, but he sweetens up a bit. I recommend.
Overrated. Wasted 1/4 of the lecture preaching that we should go to sports event and support the School admin. . Although, he failed to mention how the school wasted money on a new football field but left the technology building looking like garbage. He also does a bad job teaching that he has to ask the kids what grades do they want to make.
Best Professor at UH period. I absolutely hate Chemistry but he makes the lectures interesting and very helpful. Offers lots of extra credit. Exams are at stupid Casa and 20 MC which are difficult. I struggled to pass these classes but he worked with me to get a passing grade. I highly recommend him for any Chem Course!! Very funny!
Signed up for this class last semester with extremely high hopes as I heard so many good things and personally struggle in chemistry. However, I was let down. He teaches the most basic concepts and then makes test questions deeply conceptual and overall difficult. Take in class quizzes for attendance but even those are difficult. Do not recommend.
Seriously, DO NOT TAKE HIM. Simple as that.
This class is not easy his exams are tough I took a workshop and studied very hard and still did not do well on exams. He is a good professor he can be very rude he has changed his exams and made them very difficult. I would not recommend him if you are not good at chemistry and do not have a lot of time to dedicate yourself to this class.
First of all, he's a very popular chem professor, and there's reason why he is. Definitely GO TO HIS CLASS and do the hw and practice exams. Even though tests are challenging, if you do practice exams and read book, it's manageable. He makes you learn chemistry. Other than just being a professor, he's like a mentor also. I don't regret taking him.
Dr. Bott is a GREAT professor. Sure he starts off really strict and anal, but he's a really cool guy! He really know his stuff, too. The thing about his class is that the tests are HAAARD! Study you ass off or YOU WILL FAIL! With that, though, he's willing to help everyone who is struggling and tries his best to pass most of the class. Best choice.
Dr. Bott is one of those professors that you have to take at uh. He is the epitome of school spirit. His class is very fun (Im no math and science guy) but made stuff sound easy. Go to class everyday, do the quizzes, do the homeworks (above an 80) and the exams (above a 30) and you will get the guaranteed grade.
If you are a glassy-eyed freshman who is new to the college experience, then take him and get your 'school spirit' and all that junk. But if you want to really learn then you should look elsewhere. Prepare to spend 10x as much time on this class as you would normally have to because of his distracted teaching style. Very overrated as a professor.
Not a class where you can get an easy A. Dr. Bott's lectures are interesting enough and the homework he assigns isn't too bad either. However, the exams can be very difficult and can have questions that do not reflect the material learned in class. If you attend class every week, do the hw, and prepare extensively for exams, you should be fine.
Find and do all the practice tests w/o google or yahoo answer. Rework the hw at least 5 times and read the book (it will help you for the conceptual questions). Dont rewrite the notes,it'll waste ur time.Tests are not impossible, but you must understand all the concepts extremely well. Trust me, it's not hard at all. I got an A w/o the grading curve
really hard exams. you're better off taking the class at a community college. if you are a premed/preph you will have your dreams crushed. guaranteed. take the workshop that is optional.if you had trouble in chem 1 you will def' fail this class. it's that hard. if you have to take chem2 at uh. take it w bott. he makes the chem exams for all profs
Such an amazing professor! Chem II material is definitely tough. But just show him that you’ve tried your best and you’ll do well. Attend class - not only is it “required” but his lectures help so much…He DOES make the exams. And if you can, go to his review sessions. He is so generous and I can tell he wants his hardworking students to succeed.
Dr. Bott will not fail you, because I should have failed. Attendance is mandatory, and do not ever be late. He purposefully makes the tests a lot harder than the homeworks. Do the blackboard homeworks until you get a 100.
All the +s are pointed out in other reviews. I got an A and love Bott, but let me point out -s. Never lets out early, really pushes UH pride, can be rude, material can be tough to get a self-earned A, practice will be needed, listen to what everyone else said and you will be fine! can be strict but it is to maintain a good learning enviroment
Dr. Bott is AWESOME!!! He has a strong sense of UH pride so WEAR RED EVERY FRIDAY and for the love of God DO NOT wear another universities T-Shirt. The guarantee grate starts at a C- but if you make him "happy" he will raise it up. We did not use the book so that's unnecessary, class is mandatory and he assigns a paper.
He does not make chemistry boring but certainly challenges you. I find that some of these challenges are not necessary when learning chemistry. E.g his extra credit activities, giving a 2nd paper option for students who didn't do the 1st paper/or got a really low grade which I dont find that its fair for the others who tried. Weird way to do things
AWFUL Professor. Makes class lessons seem pretty easy to follow, but HW is much harder and tests are insanely HARD. Prepare to study your butt off and still get a grade lower than you deserve.DO NOT TAKE. Also, crushed your dreams if you want to be anywhere in the medical field. Hated going to class, but it's mandatory. Also goes off topic a lot.
Class is not relevant to the EXAMS Learnt more myself studying the book but too late to recover my mistakes Quizzes are DISORGANIZED not timed shows 1 COMPLICATED concept and quiz u right after just by 1 example Quizzes u SUPER FAST Paper w detailed instructions but grades it UNFORGIVING even when u followed it No discussing grading individually
DO NOT TAKE Irrelevant quizzes tt are rushed no timing and graded consist of harder questions he only shows u 1 or 2 examples of a new concept unnecessary extra credit activities tt cld been involved more with chem assign a paper with careful instruct but deducts points 4 almost everything HE SAID DONT EXPECT AN "A" ON A SCIENCE CLASS IN SUMMER
This man puts the red in UH...literally. I deeply enjoyed his stories (Jerry Springer comment, TV appearance on ESPN, and etc.) and his jokes about A&M ("blood Aggies"). Overall, Bott is a great guy. He answers all questions, provides many opportunities for extra credit, and his exams are extremely simple. Take him! You won't regret it.
Bott is quite a character. He can be rude and makes you feel like an idiot if you ask a question. Overall class was decent. 3 test, daily quizzes, and online hw. Unlimited chances for hw. Test can be tricky and are nothing like practice test so don't rely on that. He gives a few extra credit opportunities and attendance is very important to him.
Extremely easy professor. yes, the test are fairly difficult but if you attend class, make at least an 80 on all hw & at least a 30 on all test then he'll give you the guaranteed grade. Bott gives tons of extra credit and he's really nice. Just be in class on time, don't text, and don't leave arly and you should be fine
Just don't do this to yourself. He knows chemistry very well but a 2 hour lecture will consist of an hour of short stories. Watch out for the story about him wanting to play cricket for England. His homework is alright if you study but his tests are near impossible. There are atleast 3 quizzes a day in class that count as attendance. Just don't.
worst prof ever hands down
His tests are ridiculously impossible and hard. Why? Because what he teaches and the hw's/quiz's do NOT reflect what is on his tests. The class average is <50% and he doesn't even care. Not student oriented. unhelpful. His teaching style is flipped classroom meaning he gives you avrg 5 quizes per class and you teach yourself at home to prepare.
This is an amazing Chemistry Professor. By all means not an easy A, but if you want to learn the material then take Bott. Wear red, study hard and learn some Chemistry.
This Professor is amazing! He gives a lot to tips to do good in the class, it's the lazy students that dislike his tests. If you're not going to put in effort then you might as well drop out from university. No teacher will give you an easy A! He is extremely funny and not only that, he tries his best for you to understand and grasp the material!
Professor Bott is very hard, but he is an amazing professor. He really cares about you as a student, and he wants what is best for you. Personally, I love his teaching style. Quizzes are every single day, and attendance is mandatory, but he is entertaining, understanding, and replies very quickly to email. best prof ever
Class is not relevant to the exams which are hard. He rambles about himself. Acts like questions from students are stupid. Not a helpful prof and very rude.
People who say he is not a good lecturer, I'd argue, aren't ready to take difficult STEM courses. His tests are difficult. But, he gives nearly every resource possible from power points over the subject, to MULTIPLE review tests with questions just like those on the tests. Take him if you want to learn how to study and do well in Organic.
Professor Bott is, without a doubt, the hardest professor you will have your freshman year. But if you do everything he tells you to do, watch the powerpoints, do homeworks in advance, etc. You'll be fine. Don't move on to the next chapter until you get 90% or above on the current chapter's homework. Study hard. You'll be fine.
Hands down a great Professor. It is not an easy A, but Chemistry is not an easy subject. If you want to actually learn Chemistry and have a good foundation for future Chem courses take Bott. Study very hard and be ready for a couple tricky test questions.
Professor Bott really cares about his subject and this makes it so he pushes his students hard--instead of other professors who care about students more and mainly their grades. If you try a "good" amount in his class you will succeed because he does try his resolute best to teach, and if you are a good student, and relatively smart you'll pass.
You CANNOT miss a class. You take short quizzes everyday for attendance. He grades hard on the paper so turn it in early to get extra points. He is kind of arrogant but is known for it. Tests are easy, homework is not bad. Its annoying he wants he's students to always attend everything at UH but we all have lives too.
No Joke. Great Teacher, Lecturer, but tests are impossible. No curve. A bunch of quizzes which almost everyone does poorly on. Even if you do the BB hw, practices test, survey, read, perfect attendance they aren't a big percentage of your grade, it is his tests that are. His test are extremely tough. he gives out an avg of 5 quizzes per day.
This class is really tough. The tests are impossible. If you did not take him for chem 1 then you will suffer in this class. I got an A with geanangle and geanangle does not prepare you well for this class. He makes the simple problems with easy concepts sooo hard! you think you understand , but in reality you will cry during the tests. VERY hard.
The best instructor ever! I learned more from one class with him than I've ever learned about chem in High School and college together! Yes, he makes you work for your grade, but he also makes the material ez to understand. Do everything he says, rewrite your notes, do quizzes at least 3-4 times. Don't have to read book if you attend lec. Got A-.
Entered the Chem 2 class, had to drop it, ONLY bc he made it crystal clear that, If you had not taken Chem 1, you will not pass Chem 2, and for me it was a while since I've taken Chem 1. He is and Awesome professor, and like my teacher from High school, he is strict but HE TEACHES YOU! Please don't wear A&M to class, and show your Coog Pride!
Baby chem is easy with him. If you have to take a science course just to take one, this is an easy one and if you go to class and try, you're guaranteed to pass.
Material is easy but tests have random questions about scientists sometimes. He has strict classroom rules. Attendance is required for every class. There's a really pointless essay assignment. He'll most likely make the final optional.
Bott is no joke. If you do not have the concepts down, you will not do well. You can't just memorize how to do problems like you could in Geanangel's 1331. He's a great prof, though. Hes pretty generous with extra credit and some curving on grades if the class is good, but ONLY for students who go to class. If you aren't there, you're screwed.
-Be on time, there is a quiz the moment class starts. -There is a guaranteed grade for your class, so follow rules, it'll go up. - Great instructor. - He's kind of particular. - Gives extra credit. - Recommended
He's very intimidating. He gives you certain scores he expects from you (at least 30% on tests) and if you do everything he tells you, you're guarantee at least a B in the class. BUT you have to work hard. Attendance is mandatory as there are quizzes everyday in class. I learned to respect him. He's great.
hard tests!
Hands down the hardest professor I have ever met. Loves to see students suffer :( No mercy no nothing. I wish there were more chemistry professors who teach 1332.
This class was my favorite of the semester. He spoke to us on orientation and I knew I had to have him as my teacher.
He is an old fashioned man, he teaches really good and easy to understand materials. Do all BB hw, watch powerpoint and take note before you come to class. You have to study hard because his exams are difficult but he will curve. You should not come late or skip his class. You will have a good foundation in chemistry after his class.
I love Professor Bott! I only too this class because of how inspiring he was during freshman orientation. This is a great choice for an Natural Science credit, especially if you're willing to put in just a tad bit of effort. Definitely recommended.
This class was intense. There are multiple quizzes during each class. He uses the flipped method and that means that you watch PPTs at home and then take quizzes during class and then he goes over the material. There are 3 tests and the lowest is dropped. Don't slack off because it is hard to get caught up. He does not allow talking or electronics.
I only passed this class because of the guaranteed grade. Dr. Bott was awesome up until the end of the semester, when he began begging students to purchase season tickets for football games... The class is so huge he can't do one on one, even though he accommodated me due to my visual impairment. I would take him only for baby chem again.
Be prepared to work your butt off
He absolutely HATES it when his students skip; ESPECIALLY if they are late to class. DO NOT GET ON HIS BAD SIDE. If you pay attention, practice the hw he gives multiple times, show up to class, do the extra credit and finish the essay earlier than the time it's due, you will get an easy A. He is a great teacher but also can be very rude.
He will not help you. During the whole semester you will have about 70 quizzes; sometimes 3-4 per class. He will curve, but not much. If you get C-, you get C. Tests are extremely hard. Dont buy the book because he never goes over it. Half of the class he talks about sports and stuff. You must study by yourself. He does not explain anything.
Dr. Bott is the type of professor that will make you laugh with his witty jokes, call out students in class , give multiple daily quizzes for attendance purposes, have a guaranteed grade if you meet certain stipulations, all the while forgetting to actually teach Chemistry. RIP Chem 1332, what could have been
I'd take him twice if I could..
Bott is not an easy professor, but if you do what he tells you to do and go to class.. you will pass his class. He doesn't let people that suck at chemistry fail just because they are bad at chemistry. His primary goal is for you to learn something and enjoy his class.
I wish he taught all my classes
Very helpful, willing to help
Really great professor!
GREAT professor! Really straight-forward with what he wants from you as a student and reminds you every class time. Keeps the lectures interesting by giving us a little break at least once during the lecture to provide some insight mainly for those who are going to medgrad school. Daily quizzes, 3 tests (1 drop) + final and TONS of extra credit!
His classes are really fun
He is a great teacher but his test are BS.
Explains everything in an easy to understand way. Funny lectures that don't make you hate attending class. He requires you to attend class and gives pop quizzes during class (that count towards your grade) to make sure you're there and that you haven't ducked out early. Wish the rest of my Chem classes were taught by him. Do the work, get an A.
He really care about his students but this class is definitely not and easy A. Need to work your butt off. Exams are mediumhard focuses on concept and understanding the material.
The most annoying professor I have ever had. Makes you wear red and go to school functions and holds the grading scale over your head. 92 quizzes total in the semester. Doesn't give enough time on them. Tests are hard. Copies them from other universities. Always to busy to talk to students personally. Would not recommend taking.
Professor Bott is, if not the best, one of the best professors in UH. Tests are tough but to be fair he says this at the beginning; however if you watch powerpoints and do the work its very doable. This plus his incredible charisma , love for the subject, and great teaching MORE than makes up for the difficulty-like FAR more.
Professor Bott is by far one of the best professor when it comes to teaching at UH, but that's it. Otherwise he is a man who disrespects students, makes false promises, and makes empty threats. Again, I think it is great to promote school pride, but the reason why we are coming to chemistry class is to learn chemistry and get the grade.
Dr. Bott is awesome. chem II is a hard class, however he's there to help. used the flip method where you watch videos on your own, then get quizzed over them in class. gives great lectures and is funny too. test are difficult and tend to be half computations and half conceptual, so study concepts. will curve at the end but makes you work for it.
You will learn chemistry with this Professor. It will be hard. You will b e challenged, but you will appreciate taking this man. Do what you need to do, study, practice, and live chemistry for the semester. If you miss class, drop the course. If you cannot do what is needed of you, drop the course. He will be real and straight with you. Doesnt BS.
Professor Bott's class is awesome. He gives out multiple quizzes in one class period, but they are pretty easy. Not many homework assignments. For the tests, review homework and old exams. Tests are not hard if you study. Follow closely to the guidelines for the paper. You will get A if you try.
Weekly homework due Sunday, 3 to 5 quizzes per class, opportunities for extra credit on the quiz grade, 3 tough exams and an optional final. Dr. Bott is an amazing professor, he really teaches the procedure to get the math done and explains the concepts reasonably well. You do have to work hard and watch and understand his videos before class.
Best professor at UH. I wish he could be my professor for every class. I hated chemistry until I had him, it's impossible not to understand. Attendance is mandatory but his lectures are super fun because he's HILARIOUS.
If you are not good in Chemistry and you show up to class and try your hardest you will atleast make a B in the class. He gives really good advice aswell when it comes to your career choice. Definitely the best teacher i've had.
He is one of the best professors I have ever had!
He is one of the best professors I have ever had! Loved his class. Great teacher
Professor Bott is an amazing professor. He will explain thoroughly and ask if the class is understanding. He gives a lot of extra credit opportunities and is a fair grader. He tells you what to expect and how to do things before hand so anything that you encounter, shouldn't be a surprise unless you don't care. Taking him again for Chem 1332.
Bott was an amazing professor! Really helped his students and gave good advice. His class was definitely very hard. You need to study every day and make sure you know how to do all homework problems like the back of your hand. 3 tests and an optional final. lowest test grade gets dropped. If you study hard this class is worth it
I really liked Bott's class. Lots of in class quizzes for attendance. He is interesting one of the best professors I've had. For non-majors Chem you get a guaranteed grade of a C that was raised in my class to a B- . He honestly just wants to see you try in the class.
He is truly an amazing professor. I love his class and I would definitely recommend him. I learned a lot and he has a heart of gold.
Long live Simon Bott. I used to hate chemistry before him. This is not an easy A class at all. You have to do your best to get the best grade you can but he will make you interested in chemistry and actually learn it. He will find million diff ways to explain if you don't get something and make sure that you do. Laid back and hilarious!
not a bad foundation chemistry class for nonmajors. do your work and come to class and you will do fine. complete the homework's until 100 percent though because tests are tough.
Great Professor!!! Best chemistry Professor that the University of Houston has. I wish he taught Chemistry 1 during the school year.
One of the hardest courses you can take during your first year. You will work in this class. If you miss class, your grade suffers. You have to stay on it. Take notes outside and during class. You can succeed, just put the effort in. Tests are conceptual. He repeats that this isn't a math course. Get Ready, and have fun. (not sarcastic)
Excellent professor! I'm not at all a chemistry person, but he is so good at explaining things that I really enjoyed his class. He truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Not an easy class. You'll have to work hard, but you will learn a lot.
If you do not read and do not go to class, you WILL fail.
First exam down. Failed. Lectures and powerpoints cover about 20-25% of the exam. I think if I guessed I would have done better. No way to prepare. How can I make 70, 80, 5 25 on the practice? Shows you it all depends on his mood, as he said. Extra credit is more for him to remember who you are. If you make him happy, he may take off final. Gamble!
Bott is by far one of the best professors I have had to date. If you are a chemistry major, TAKE HIM FOR FUNDAMENTALS OF CHEM. You will not regret it. He is a very difficult professor, but the amount of time he puts into the class to prepare you is incredible. You have to attend class, and you have to watch the powerpoints to pass.
Rude. Eats your quiz if you have fringes left on your quiz papers. Acts too smart. Extremely hard tests, the average was 29% for the first test! Teaches easy stuff in class but gives the most bizarre calculations on the test. Dont take him! SAVE YOUR GPA!!!
Explains everything pretty easy. Quizzes are ok and hw not bad. You think you are prepared but stop and revise it all again. Even if you think you know it all, believe me you dont. His exams are made for PhD graduates. Can be rude at times. All you gonna get is "leave me alone". Do not concentrate on hw, its worth 0.1% and each test quest. wort 1%
OK. it seems as though he is worse this semester (i took him last smstr). definitely not easy A. Tests are from other, harder, schools. The class can be fun to go to at times but tests are too hard for what it's worth. he may or may not make the final optional. Quizzes and homework's are much easier than the actual test so don't let that fool you.
Overall a good teacher. He can get a little off-topic, but doesn't skip out on teaching because of it. Can seem a little harsh but will help you if you ask. The material isn't hard. As long as you do what's expected you're guaranteed to pass, and getting an A is by no means impossible. He is also very fun to be around for his amazing school spirit.
If Chem is not the knowledge you need for your major, dont take him. He explains well in class & also funny. But on the other hand, his tests are extremely hard & tricky, you need to know your material inside and out. The quiz and HW are way easier than the tests. if you do good on HW, dont think the test will be the same
While to class was easy, Bott was often extremely disrespectful toward students.
He makes Chemistry fun, and I NEVER thought I would ever say that about Chemistry. Pop quiz for attendance every day. Don't need text book. Show up to class, do your homework, and make an effort you will pass. There is a guaranteed grade per semester based these rules but if you try you will most likely score higher than it.
If you ever take Chemistry, take it with Bott!
Professor Bott is very knowledgeable in Chemistry. The class isn't an easy A, but if you go to class everyday (attendance matters) and pay attention it shouldn't be hard. There isn't a lot of homework only a few due whenever the test comes. He assigns one essay and there's 4 tests and a final. I would take his class again.
Very easy class for science majors and un-science majors. A lot of pop quizes. Attendance is important, you do not need to buy a book for this class. His notes are more than enough. BTW he hates papers with fringes, if you turn a quiz with fringes, he would eat the paper.
Dr. Bott is an amazing teacher and you can tell he is passionate about what he is teaching and cares for his students. However, this is not to say he is easy. His class is bases heavily on knowing concepts instead of just knowing how to work a problem a specific way. You have to put out alot of work and time for his class, but it isn't impossible.
he's funny and makes things interesting. i liked his class but you should keep in mind he is not an easy professor, and he is a very tough grader. im a straight A student and i worked hard in his class, we had to write a paper where we got no rubric and were harshly graded, luckily I did ok but a bunch of people got a 0.. so if u take him work hard
The whole class is easy. Exams are something else. He never fails, if you want D you get it just go to class. Curves hmm not great at all. Stuff that he gives you in class does not help. No book. Questions from previous tests very rarely repeat. Have I learnt something: Nope. Would take him again: I hope I never have to see him again. I give him D
Has a you get a free grade for showing up to class system that revolves around school spirit and your class participation in school activities. Easy B for a science class if thats what you're looking for, but getting an A seems really difficult for a non-science major. Furthermore you have to use Casa, and hes not much help when they mess with you.
Basically part 2 of chem 1. Put in the work, show up to class, view the lectures online (if he's still doing a reverse classroom) and study. He always tells everyone that he doesn't want you to learn how to do problems. He wants you to actually know the material. That said, his tests are likely to not be like the practice exams. Great Professor.
This man is rude but an amazing teacher. If you really want/need to know chemistry take him. His tests are ridiculously hard but he does curve and give extra credit. Only thing is he does pop quizzes in each class and he grades them for credit not attendance. Fail those and your grade will suck.
This is NOT an easy class. You WILL need to work HARD to get an A. That being said, it is not impossible. He is very reasonable with grades (1 drop test + TONS of E.C) and he wants you to understand the material as opposed to simply memorizing it. Do not expect to pass if you don't plan on attending class or watching lectures.
Great man. Tough to get an A but you just gotta work hard and he rewards that. He's fair and if you show upto class, he will skew the grade in your favor. Get an A on the final and you got yourself an A in the class. Don't' wanna take the final? Do good on tests and show up to class and it's optional. But you gotta work hard and understand concepts
Amazing Professor in terms of cracking jokes and school spirit. He definitely knows what is he talking about and does it well. Big time extra credit and a doable A if you put it in the work, especially if he makes the final optional. Just do NOT annoy him and it will most definitely be your favorite chemistry class of all times.
You have to study his power points before lecture and take notes in class to do well. You have to put in a lot of effort outside of class in order to expect a decent grade (B). If you plan to go to medical/pharmacy/dental/opt take his class!!! It will help a lot. He is VERY fair to all the students. This is not an easy class. Prepare to study!
His class was fairly easy and minimal work. However, the whole semester I just did only what he required in order to get the guaranteed grade. Then come end of the semester I really wanted the A. I tried to take the final (cause if you get an A on the final you get an A in class) however I ended up with a B because I didn't know the material.
He's the best Chemistry professor on campus. As long as you put in effort and do the work, which is not that much, you'll do great. Explains material very well and cares about his students.
His tests are hard, but they're not impossible. He is strict, but not nice. If you ask for help he will give you his time until you understand it. If he sees you work hard, do well on the in-class and online quizzes and practice tests, but then bomb the tests, he WILL bump yo if he knows you. He is probably the best professor you can take at UH!
He's such a sweet professor that cares for his students and is a funny person to be around. I just wish his kindness could be reflected in the difficulty of his tests.
He's a good teacher in the way he teaches but his examples are way easier than the hw problems and way harder and diff on the tests. So just practice all the problems many many times as you can and go to the review sessions if you need help and go to class every time!
Professor Bott is very simple. Do exactly as he says and you'll pass. You don't even have to be good at the subject. If you participate, do all the homeworks and go to class everyday, you get what he calls a "guaranteed grade" of a B. Its also a plus that the class is extremely enjoyable. He's hilarious and eats paper.
Honestly only took him cause i wanted to see him eat paper and he did not disappoint
Tons of quizzes, which is really waste of paper.. Exams are hard, but highly related to the topics. Seems no curves at all, but he said we will get somehow curves on the exams... But I didn't get any curves.... No curves.. No A's... sad face But I do enjoy watching his lecture related videos.. But still no A's...
Bott is an amazing professor but EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. He teaches CONCEPTS and memorization WILL lead to failure. Quizzes are good indicators of conceptual understanding, HW ISN'T! Go over previous exams he provides (he also works through them) and attend the Friday Reviews! Low raters usually don't attend classes and score low as a result.
Hard class. but not impossible. You really need to have your heart in it to pass/get a good grade though.
Dr. Bott is an excellent teacher, I highly recommend taking his class!
Bott is an amazing professor!!! His lectures are hilarious but super informative. Tests are difficult because he expects you to understand the material. If you do the practice tests and study your notes, you should be fine. Attendance is a must if you want to pass his class. Actually made me like chemistry.
Took him spring 16. So easy, just show up take the quiz and you can use your notes, do all the homework there are only a few questions on them, take the test, theres one paper. As long as you meet the average he gives, follow the rules and you will get the guaranteed grade. TAKE HIM!
He is actually a very good professor, and teaches the class very well. The only thing he lacks, is mercy. Do not miss class, do not miss instructions, and do not miss any assignments. That is essentially all you need to do. If, however, you miss assignments, but you know your chemistry, you will probably not get the grade you want.
I would suggest you listen to him and do what he says, including going to campus events because then he will like you as a class and give you the nicer grading scale! You also don't need the book, he tells you to buy it, but his notes are enough the book just gets confusing . And go to class, super important he gives quizzes as attendance.
the tests are very difficult, in saying that, he's the best professors for 1332. get ready for lots of conceptual questions on test. little to no gimme questions on test. you more than likely feel stupid at one point or another after a test/hw.
Outstanding professor! I hated Chemistry but in the end I liked working through his exercises. Bottom line: NEVER miss a class NOR be late. Take notes. Do the best you can do in his quizzes. DO the HW and you'll get an A on tests as well. Behave as a class and you might not get to do the group project, second paper, and have the final be optional.
GUARANTEED GRADE! As long as you don't miss too many quizzes, get the required grades on the tests, and get at least an 80 on all the homeworks, you get the guaranteed grade. My class received a B-. Attendance is mandatory, he takes quizzes at the beginning and during the class period. As long as you're in class, and taking notes, you'll pass!
If you are attending UH as freshman, DO NOT TAKE BOTT YOUR FIRST YEAR!!!!! Despite him being "nice" and "generous", he is very ignorant and self-centered person you will ever meet. He makes you feel like a real stupid idiot. GOOD LUCK!!!
You earn your grade. Make sure you understand the material by watching his videos and writing down everything he says. Inclass quizzes are the attendance (had about 60 this semester). These quizzes really test if you know the material. Make your own study guides. Tests are difficult so you HAVE to know the material inside out. Very realistic prof.
Best Chem professor at UH. He is very helpful. He posts powerpoint videos that basically cover everything you need for the class.. I did not open the book once. So as long as you do the HW assignments and watch the videos as he tells you too, you should be fine.
Great professor! If you're willing to do the work and pay attention, you'll pass his class. Very understand and funny. Talk to him about anything, whether it be the class or you're future, he's always willing to help you. Take his class!
His class is by far one of my favorite ones. He is very clear and thorough when it comes to teaching the material. He answers questions and offers a lot of extra credit. The tests are a not just a test of how well you know the material but how good of a test taker you are. He is one of the best professors you will ever take.
he's the best bet for chem 2. he makes the tests. HIS IN CLASS QUIZZSES MATTER NOT JUST FOR ATTENDANCE. THE GRADE CAN SCREW YOU OVER. he knows what he's talking about very very good professor. after the first test he mentioned what every major should have received on the test, doesn't mean anything. your future doesn't depend on one chem 2 test lol
Professor Bott is amazing. He is a wonderful professor to get to know. He is the best chemistry prof at UH. If you need help, do not hesitate to ask. Class participation is mandatory; as there will be multiple in class quizzes a day. It is crucial that you watch the videos as instructed, and keep up. Practice is key. He gives ample resources.
I don't understand what everyone likes about him so much. most overrated professor. Tests are hard, and the final is even harder. Jokes aren't that funny. Too much school pride.
Bott is the best! Test are the toughest I've seen! But you will learn so much with him. He is super nice and inspirational. I personally understood the material very well and the test werent too bad for me. Made an A on the final and two midterms. Made a B on one midterm but he drops the lowest. Just take him you wont regret it! Fun class
His lectures are amazing! You have to do a lot of outside work, but his lecture videos are very easy to understand. He gives a lot of quizzes, but they help a lot! You definitely have to put in effort to get an A in his class.
Dr. Bott is probably the most competent chem professor at UH. He gives you plenty of resources to be successful in the class, but it's up to you to utilize those resources. That being said, Chem 2 is a very difficult class and he doesn't give out A's like candy. However, the grading scale has a nice curve if you earn it.
im not sure why people like him. he's arrogant and puts people's down. his test are REALLY REALLY HARD and expect you to fully understand everything thats laid in front of you. you have to put 15-20 extra hours for his class if you can't you won't make a good grade. but he's the only good chem prof so i guess you're stuck with him.
Dr. Bott is known for how smooth, cohesive, and transitionally non-turbulent his lectures are. Every student has a FAIR chance of earning an A in his classes provided they do the following -Show up on TIME with a positive attitude, pay attention, refrain from ALL distractions, genuinely attempt quizzes, and put in reasonable effort i.e. (notes) :)
Bott is the best option for chem. He's a good teacher&actually wants you to understand chem, but is very arrogant and pretentious. Also is discouraging&what he says about grades needed to get into professional school is B.S. You HAVE to put in effort&time to get an A. In class quizzes everyday, not just for attendance the grade matters!
He can come off as a little rude/arrogant but I found him to be a pretty good guy that cares about his students. Class was very difficult, got my 1st C. HW is a lot easier than tests. Learn the concepts on his notes and HW VERY well if you want any hope of making a B or higher on tests. Make sure to attend all his classes. Take quizzes seriously.
Even though Bott's class is crazy, if you watch his videos, pay attention in class, and take notes, an A is very much possible. He makes you work for it, but for a good cause. Just keep taking notes and make your time manage all the notes and different classes you're taking. Don't slack off.
Bott can be kind of rude and he has rules that he makes sure students follow! No electronics and no talking. But other than that he is a very good professor and wants us to actually understand concepts not just remember facts. He is the best choice. Chemistry is hard and if you don't dedicate MANY hours outside of class you wont do well.
You need to attend lecture because he gives 'quizzes' everyday, but more importantly he uses quizzes to gage attendance. His tests are hard so be ready to study. At the end of the semester he may give you a higher grade based on your attendance (by the number of quizzes you turned in) which can REALLY help your grade. He bumped me from a B to an A
Simon Bott is truly a horrible professor. He doesnt care about his students and pretty much tells them to change their career path if they dont do well in chemistry. He isnt willing to help in any case and its pretty much my way or the high way. Horrible professor, BE AWARE! Take Teets instead
I am an A student and the only D in my transcript's in baby-chem. He had a grantee grade policy where all students (class was about 300+) get a B+ if test scores were above 10/20. I did fine in my exams and had a B+ in BB so the final was optional. Then my grade changed one week before the final to F so I studied hard but barley made D
Great educational and life experience!
He's awesome.
Dr. Bott is a rare breed of educator. Worked very hard in his summer 1331 but came up short with (probably) a C. You need to have a good foundation in chem (AP or 1301) prior to taking his class. Im an A/B student but high school is a distant memory so this was extremely tough. Its hard but what the hell, so is life. Take him, its an experience.
Professor Bott is THE best chemistry professor at UH. He's relatable, energetic, and positive he has tremendous passion for teaching regarding students success. His lectures are AAAAAMAZZZZING, he's engaging and makes chemistry interesting and fun. Take him if you are good or bad in chemistry. He will educate you and encourage you to be the best
Looking back, he is one of the best professors that I have had at the University of Houston. It is a shame that he's leaving but excited that he gets to make a huge difference elsewhere when he moves back overseas. He truly cares about his students and doesn't sugar coat anything. GO COOGS!! Remember to always wear red of fridays!!
Dr. Bott is the best chemistry professor to take. He sets you up to be successful but he expects a lot. He has online lectures for you to listen to prior to class. Then you have multiple pop quizzes every day. Then he reiterates the material. Pay attention, go to office hours, and he gives you the grade you deserve.
He was the best chem professor at UH!! He was clear in his lectures and cared about you learning!! He also was the biggest Cougar around! Keep Houston Red and Go Coogs!!
pls come back dr. bott we miss u
We miss you Dr. Bott. You inspired me to continue working hard to achieve my dreams. Now I've graduated. Thank you for writing me a letter of rec when no one else wanted to.
Although he doesn't teach here anymore, his chemistry videos circulate around and prevent many students from failing. I don't even need to attend my actual class when I have his thorough, hilarious videos. Even though he stopped teaching at UH when I arrived, I still miss him.
i never actually took this class but his son is my friend so i hung out with him a lot as a kid, i love this man and hes the bomb
