he's the greatest teacher ever, but you could get a much better grade with any other teacher... it's up to you to decide whether you want the grade or the knowledge... both are practically unachievable.
Fun lecture but if our looking for someone to hold your hand, do not take this professor. He'll give you the map but your not gonna get any directions.
The class is o.k. You only have 4 paper grades and he grades pretty tough (or should I say his T.A. does)!! Definetly do not take at night--- you will fall asleep!!!!
this man pends more time criticizing american than actually teaching, the only way to pass his papers is to put what he says in the paper so in other words you have to go to class and take notes but you dont have to read the book
I had him for existentialism. He does criticize America often and he is really unclear about the information that he is trying to convey to the class. A very hard to understand class. Read the books assigned!
Very strict and rude man. Did not help in answering any of my questions. If you made a comment in class you were wrong and he was right. Too opinionative. He failed me and I'm retaking the class now. Do not take him!

Pretty cool guy after you get over the fact that he detests America and thinks we are all stupid. He likes to talk alot but he makes pretty good arguments. No book for the class, you have to make copies of books he lists.

Excellent orator-u must have strong writing skills. Can come off as arrogant, but thats mostly for laughs-a portion of it is justified. He's enthusiastic and likes to be challenged. Take a ton of notes and derive ur papers from them. If ur open minded, he's actually funny. I thought the class was fun- one of my favorite teachers.
He is very well spoken and creates very strong arguments. He may occasionally ask for someone to comment on whats going on in class, but he generally talks for all of class. As long as you take detailed notes and use them to create well written papers that agree with his veiws, you should do fine. Your grade depends on how well you can write.
Very difficult and biased professor. Very demanding and has very high expectations for his students. However, he IS willing to help if you finish the papers BEFORE they are due and talk to him about them. Don't be afraid to CHALLENGE his arguments and DISAGREE with him. He is difficult but tries to be as fair as he can be.
if you cant write a good essay dont even try to take class with him. he's EXTREMELY critical in his grading. hates america and thinks fau students as well as florida people are stupid.
All you have to do is is keep quiet and write what he says in class in your papers.
I am an A-B student and got a D in this class. I think that says it all.
Quite a challenge! A very interesting one if approached ardently and diligently.
Intro to Philosophy. The book helps for like, the first essay - that's it. You have to go to EVERY class and write down EVERYTHING he says and put THAT in your essay. Agree with him all the time in your papers, even though you may think he's a nut in class. If you aren't a good essay writer youll fail. He does make class interesting though.
The prompts given are startling in their breadth. If you regurgitate verbatim the lectures, you will receive a decent grade. However, if you explore the issues through alternate perspectives you will be unable to both qualify your statements and stay under the allotted word limit. Meaning you will not do well. Disagree in class, not on assignments.
Dr. Glynn is a great professor. Often one goes to class to only 2 have a boring lectures, not with Dr. Glynn. He goes at a good pace, cares that one understands & tries to put things as simple as possible. I was able to get an A on the class thanks to the arduous discussions that can happen in the class. TAKE HIM!! :)
This guy is a real trip. Because he knows students are equal to professors, unlike others, he won?t hold your hand and so when arguing he uses all his rhetorical skills which only make one an even better debater. Have taken so far 3 courses with him and got two B?s and an A. Study hard, write well and one can actually enjoy it.
I've said this same thing of only few proffesor at FAU. EXCELLENT. He challenges students to think outside of the box as well as to think for themselves. He is an inspiration to a world that seems hopelessly mundane and self-destructive.
Excellent teacher, clear, direct, and concise.I want to take more of his classes.
UMMMM can not understand a word he says!!
Was very into his own ideas. If one did not agree with his philosophy he or she did not receive a good grade. Tough teacher and seems to play favorites. Knows his stuff, but very hard on students.
he's an honest and fair grader, which to many will mean they won't do well, but that's not his fault- most people just can't write. there were 4 papers, the 1st one you revise and that grade counts as the 2nd paper.if you listen to the extensive notes he writes on ur essays you should be fine(the 1st essay i got an 80-ended up with an A in the class
It is extremely rewarding to take any class with Dr. Glynn so long as you are prepared to actually think. You will get a good grade if you take good notes from his lectures. Dr. Glynn is a witty smart-ass, but he has earned the right to be, and consistently made me laugh with his Glynnisms(you'll see).Everything sounds better with a British accent.
Dr. Glynn is VERY demanding as far as writing goes. There is very little room for interpretation, as it just opens the door for attack. Take notes in his class and write the 4 papers exactly as he had explained them in class. I tried to improvise, and although I really like his teaching style, his grading style kills me.
This course is not only essential, but the insight one receives with the professor is priceless. He speaks truth and is a very well rounded intellectual. Hands down, the best professor at FAU. We are lucky to have him.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! DO NOT TAKE HIM!!! now that thats cleared up don't say u weren't warned. he is the hardest teacher ever it is impossible to please him and he just hands out 50's on papers like its his job...trust me take my advice and find any other teacher if u want to pass!!
He's a hard one to please. He grades shrewdly and us unforgiving. If you're up for a challenge make sure you read EVERY reading and spend A LOT of time writing your papers to make them completely comprehensive. If you're just taking an intro to philosophy class because you have to, find another professor and go with the easy grade.
UNLESS you 1. Have a tape recorder 2. Take good notes 3. Read EVERYTHING 4. Regurgiate EVERYTHING he says in your own words.... You'll probably be unsuccessful in this course. Take heed of this disclaimer, a challenge is great & all but if you honestly don't plan on making the time and doing these things... DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!!!
Professor Glynn was truly an inspiration. I was once a student who never put any effort into my work, but this all changed after I took this course. Take this course as it will be one of the few classes you will remember later in life.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! failed almost everyone on their first papers and does not try to make you a better writer. By far the worst professor I've had at this school. Just don't take him.
He is genuinely interested in the material he is teaching, but has very strong opinions about the topics and has become very good at arguing them. If you are looking for a good grade on the papers, write his opinions and use his examples. Attempting otherwise is not recommended. Got 90+ on the first 3 papers but saw others get grades well under 50
Take someone else!
Professor Glynn was the best professor I've had at FAU. If you have no interest in the material and want to coast through the class, Professor Glynn is not for you. If you like philosophy and want to learn, Professor Glynn is great. Loved this class!!
He is very passion it about philosophy thus, it encourage students to get into it. I really like his class because he has a sense of humor and one can challenge him and ask questions. One has to write a little more than usual between 5-7 pages. Furthermore, he is very organize and clear and shows his perspectives with confidence.
He is okay. He seems to know what he is talking about when it gets to philosophical stuff but when he (often) diverges to politics/economics he becomes very opinionated and misleading. It's best to double check what he is saying and point out the inaccuracies when spotted. How hard your essay is graded is up to the TA. My own was a good grader.
He's a good guy. Overall. Sometimes he begins talking about religion and he can get a bit annoying, but everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. He does go into Political tangents but overall he has very interesting things to say. READ THE BOOKS!! The only grades you get are the papers you turn in: 2 1000word and 2 2000word papers; no tests@all
Although he is passionate about Philosophy, he can be very condescending and arrogant. He would challenge the American education system, whether or not people could even read and people's religious beliefs. I understand that Philosophy and religion, generally, don't mix, but it doesn't give him the right to question morals/ethics based on religion.
very nice and smart man. However, he is highly opinionated and if you do not write your papers based on his beliefs you will fail. Sometimes can come off as a jerk in class but one on one is extremely helpful. Make sure you have a good TA. They grade your paper. 4 essays in total. Might want to consider a different professor though
This man is absolutely one of best professors I've had. He is 100% engaged in the material he professes to the class and encourages discussion. Certainly can be a mind opening experience to those who want to learn philosophy. He also has an English accent which is a plus in my book.
If you are looking to take a course to get you a job, do not take this one. If you are looking to take a course to benefit your life and make changes that could influence your perception of everything you experience, then you want Glynn. His lectures are thought-provoking and make you want to write papers to develop your own opinion. Amazing man.
(4 papers: You might fail the first one) "Do the readings!" -Glynn Honestly as long as you take very good and detailed notes, you will have a lot of information and arguments for your paper. He does a good job detailing what he wants in the papers through his lectures. He will go over exactly the material he is looking for, so pay attention!
This is the only point in your entire college life will you be actually thinking something of your own. professor Glynn is going to be very tough on the grading but can't blame him for being honest. For this class you don't need super extensive note taking skills but you should be keen to listen, for what he says has deeper meaning, PAY ATTENTION!
While Glynn knows what he is talking about. He can be very picky about certain things. He only grades 4 papers, but if you want a decent grade on all of them, put a lot of effort into it and do the readings and do your research. If you're someone that isn't all about writing, I wouldn't recommend this course. Choose wisely.
Miss a lecture you wont have any idea what hes looking for in a paper. Its difficult to figure out whether something is philosophy or his opinion because he often goes on side tangents that are opinion heavy. Basically if you want to pass a paper, just take notes and write what he said, if you try and give your own opinion, you wont do well on it.
He will constantly go off topic in class going about rants complaining on his personal life and is very entitled. He is ridiculously vague about what he wants on the papers. As long as you appeal to his personal views in your essay, you'll do fine. If you can't stand writing or entitled professors, avoid this class.
There are 4 papers, no tests. He grades pretty hard on the papers so you have to make sure to take detailed notes in lecture so you can use them in your paper. I learned some things but he is very arrogant and rude so class was not enjoyable. I would not recommend taking any class from him
If you skip lectures and don't take notes this class will be very hard to pass. I recommend sitting in the front row and writing down everything he says. There are four papers, if you pay attention in class they will be easy to write. The essays are between 1,000-2,000 words. I didn't have to read the textbooks because i took heavy notes.
Overall Glynn is a extremely intelligent and knowledgable man, but can be quite offensive, so keep that in mind. Class is fairly simple, 4 papers and a discussion. Papers based primarily on lectures but you need textbooks for more details for papers. Basically miss class you probably wont get a good grade on the paper. TAs grade them though.
The TAs grade the papers, so look for a good one. All you have to do is repeat everything said in class and give quotations from the book. HOWEVER, Glynn should not be teaching philosophy. He is EXTREMELY biased. He gets defensive when people have other views, and makes up reasons to why they're wrong. Gets annoying about religion, and politics.
One of the best professors at FAU. His lectures are very insightful, and thought provoking. He constantly asks if anyone has any questions, and takes the time to go over topics that students may not fully understand. The papers may not be fun, but the lectures are something to look forward to.
No hand holding in this class. For those of you who grew up getting praise and a plastic trophy for every single mediocre thing you "accomplished" in life - this will be a wake up call. This prof WILL NOT candle you, make you feel warm and fuzzy, nor will they slow things up for you. He will offer further explanation of theories only if you ask.
DO NOT TAKE IF EASILY OFFENDED. Papers are difficult. Class will show you how interesting philosophy can be and make you either angry at the world for being so messed up and uncaring or angry at him for pointing it out.
He's horrible! thinks he is the smartest man alive and knows everything, when in reality, he's just a hot headed english man whose too stupid to teach at any other school besides FAU.
I was an OK writter before this class but i did not expect to do well on my papers after reading the comments below. I got an A in the class but i went to almost every class. The subject can make u uncomfortable and you have to be open minded in his lectures. There are 4 essays and the TA's will tell u what to write so make sure to meet with them.
If you are excellent at writing, this is the class for you. However, if not, do not take it. He is intelligent but extremely biased and rude to students. You don't have to show up to lecture to write the papers (just use the book and go to office hours of your TA) but the grading criteria was unclear. It was a waste of my time, money, and GPA.
He is a very very wise man really makes you think of things you never have though about before and this is why I love him. He does not care about what is easy for the students he challenges and grades hard so you can learn and grow instead of just passing everyone. He may seem intimidating but just go to class with an open mind.
Thursday, 7:10pm - 10:0pm class. Office hours: 10:00pm - 11:00pm. Received our first credited grade in April of our spring semester. Professor Glynn made sure to utilize the mojority of our time in class discussing his political beliefs; often times I wondered if I was in a class dedicated to the history of socialism. I do NOT recommend.
4 papers. If you good writer take it. Just use his slides to write in papers. Dont go to class just take discussion class.
Currently taking Dr. Glynn's intro to philosophy class & it's amazing. 4 papers 1000 words and a rewrite then 2000 words and a rewrite. The topic on the papers really make you think critically & if you're a bad writer you'll suffer unless you utilize the TA's efficiently. His lectures are great but not completely necessary for essay but still help
Not only does his older age make his voice harder to understand but him being British is even worse. I cant understand a single word he says, I even sit in the front row. He confuses every last nerve of the human brain when he explains a concept in class, that nobody understands about because nobody can understand his communications. Strict grader
There are four essays: 1 is 1000 words, 2 is a rewrite of the first one, 3 & 4 are 2000 words each. No tests or final. Professor Glynn is hard to understand so sit in the front. Having a good TA is important. They go over the information with you and grade your papers. Go to class, take good notes and use the Popkin and Stroll book for your papers.
I literally love this man, he is such a gem
If you have a bad feeling of whether you're going to fail or not drop it within the first week. He'd be an amazing professor if you already had some comprehension on philosophy but if you don't, then good luck. Don't recommend if writing a paper isn't your strong suit. Try to bear the pain of getting through his lecture and arguments he has.
Professor Glynn's changed how I communicate in writing and in conversation. The examples he uses were hyperbolic to make his points memorable. I'd recommend taking this course just for the technical clarity and understanding it provides. Go to lectures, TA's office hours, Dr. Glynn himself, and turn your papers in on time.
Your grade in the class is based off of essays. I think it's easier to pass the class if you go to the lecture and take notes. The essays are graded by the TA's with help from Dr Glynn. As for the professor himself, he will literally kick you out of the class for being on your phone and stop the entire lecture over people talking.
Worst teacher I've ever had. This guy game me an F on my first paper and a D on my second after I included all the points discussed from the lecture. He explained to me the things I did wrong but did not tell me how those affected my grade. Goes off on rants in the middle of class. Cuts people off mid-sentence. Very unclear criteria.
Prof. Glynn was simply decided that he is too good for FAU and he makes every effort to make that abundantly clear through his snide remarks in lecture. He will explain some of the material during lectures but will go on political tangents. 4 papers, 1/2 are 1000 words, 3/4 are 2000. Discussion is the only important part of the class.
Rambles a lot without clear guidance of conversation. Funny sometimes but scary to challenge him which is what philosophy is for.
Papers are harshly graded no matter how good of a writer you are, so don't discourage yourself if taking this class.
Your whole grade rests upon 4 papers that can be harshly graded. Attendance is not taken in lecture and only in discussion. I passed with only attending the discussion and never needing to open the book. I got 2 A's, 1 B+ and one C on the papers. Attendance in the lecture counts. Simon is ok, but pretty critical and goes off on tangents a lot.
Every lecture consists of the professor rambling on about useless subjects. Extremely strange and very disorganized. If you want to learn anything just read the books and hope you get an understanding T.A. for the discussion portion.
Dont play around with this class. The lectures are often filled with lots of rants and tangents but read the book & watch YouTube videos to clarify the concepts. Definitely go to the writing center for help and ask for Ruben, hes honestly the best. My TA for discussion was great. Dont get discouraged, just take the criticism and work from there.
By far the worst prof. I've ever had. He has openly made fun of people in class, talks poorly of the school, and is not an effective teacher at all. Going to class was a frustrating experience because he talked so much about his personal life and political opinions. He is extremely biased and will shut down those who oppose his opinion. Do not take
This class made me rethink my entire existence. Not in a philosophical manner, but mentally. Grading is SO SUBJECTIVE. If you don't get an easy TA good luck charlie. Although this is an UNDERGRADUATE PREREQUISITE, the papers are graded like its your masters thesis. In 60 credits in and have had a 4.0 until this class.
Very difficult class, you are assigned 4 papers that make up your grade for the semester. They are graded harshly and theres no set guidelines provided as to what your grade depends on. The prompts are based on content from lecture and we barely used the textbook. Definitely go to your TAs office hours it helps with the papers a lot!!
He is a true professor. He breaks down difficult material and makes in understandable. I'm good with reading comprehension but some of this philosophy I couldn't grasp until he explained it perfectly. I wish all my classes were like this, an hour is not long enough. I could listen to him all day. He is terrible if you expect a kindergarten teacher
Worst professor/ teacher Ive ever had in all my 20 years of living. He hates FAU and makes it known that he hates it here. He constantly makes fun of the students that attend this university calling us dumb. 4 papers and they are graded terribly, my classmate got a 95 on a paper, it was switched to a 50 a week later with no comments on why.
Worst professor I've ever had. Roasts all students that they cannot write. Only the 4 papers you write in class are what make up your grade. Even if you're a good writer, its disregarded towards the professor. I recommend going to every discussion since attendant is graded only through that and not lecture, and may help your grade if you'r failing.
Taking this class with Professor Glynn was a good choice. However, he can be quite opinionated and is not afraid to express his views so definitely don't take if you're easily offended. Makes the class enjoyable with humor. Just take notes, listen to what he has to say and you'll do well.
Take this class if you enjoy getting belittled, spoken down to, and basically trashed. He doesnt care about his students at all. He is nasty, rude, disrespectful and very opinionated. I have tough skin and am not easily bothered but i never been put down by anyone in my life the way this man tears down his students. DISGUSTING. Goodluck if you take
I took this class online during covid, and it was horrendous. The first 10 mins of each class was spent resolving technical issues, and the lectures themselves did not make any sense whatsoever. he takes very simple concepts and makes them confusing as hell and makes you feel stupid for not understanding them. He is rude and bad at teaching
Where do I begin... this is the worst class I've ever taken and I wouldn't wish this class on my worst enemy. Glynn and the tas are super rude to students for no reason. This is meant to be an INTRO class yet is incredibly hard. You will only pass if you write word for word what he says to do on the essays. The tas grade hard
He gives vague instructions, an unprofessional professor, 10/10 would not recommend to another living soul.
I found myself lost without guidance stuck between learning and obtaining enough information to pass. Towards the end it wasnt about learning as it was about passing.
incredibly rude and disrespectful. if you dont speak word for word what he says in your essays, you will fail. he doesnt give clear feedback and doesnt help after youve done poorly on a paper.
You those people who know a little bit about everything? Thats this guy in his lectures. He teaches everything except course material. If your paper isnt word for word like his lectures then you fail. Dont take him. Idk how anyone can consider this man knowledgeable.
he was one of those people that felt like they knew everything & everything they said was right. I'm sure philosophy is a great subject but he made me hate it. His lectures are long & have no PowerPoint. He was very disrespectful sometimes with students & an extremely tough grader. If your paper didn't follow his notes you did bad. Never take him!
Avoid at all costs. Such a tough grader; he only will give you a good grade if you parrot exactly what he says word for word. Him and the TAs get rude and snappy if you ask for guidance/help?? Makes no sense. Lectures are boring and most of the time off topic as well.
