So funny and so british.

I hate philosophy, but he is AWESOME! Stow is one of the happiest men on this campus, and he definitely makes philosophy seem less of a drag. Take the course just to experience him! The course itself is demanding, but he goes over it all in lectures
I also hate philosophy, but I love Stow! He is absolutely the funniest Brittish man EVER and he def keeps you awake. He's a hard grader on papers, but easy on the final. Go to his office hours and he's very helpful. I love this man!!!
Insanely intelligent. Hilariously witty. The only class I've never skipped.
My favorite class I've had at William and Mary. Although, i must say that there might be too many Star Trek references :) I suggest this course to anyone, those who like philosophy and those who hate its guts. Stow makes it fun and you learn about you
I couldn't understand the readings without him- he's amazing. He's the funniest professor I've ever had. Hopefuly INS will get off his back and let him stay.
very cute and british...pretty hard grader on papers, but will help you if you go see him. define your terms! lots of pop culture references...rumor that he used to work as a standup comedian, i laughed a lot in this class.
His brilliance lies in the variety and depth of his knowledge, insatiable curiosity about human interactions and his analytical skill. Witty and not easily impressed, his unique perspective causes one to wonder: "What would Simon think?"
Insanely funny and wildly brilliant and really HOT! In that rumpled British academic kind of way. The only class I never ever skipped. I like philosophy, but that doesn't mean I would have understood the texts without him. HIGHLY recommended.
It's almost disgusting how perfect Simon is. He's funny, ultra-intelligent, and well-informed about such a broad range of things. If I didn't love him so much, I'd hate him. :)
funny professor.
if i could major in stow, i would. i've never had a better prof, and he is definitely hot, whether he thinks he is or not....p.s: he actually reads how he was rated here, which just makes him so much more awesome.
THE MAN- so funny, but the class can be a bit boring, but TAKE HIM
Fascinating class. The jokes are non-stop. Stow realizes that all of us girls in his classes find him attractive, he just doesn't get why. But the fact that he knows it makes him rather pompous (the only man I've ever seen so self-deprecating and arrogant at the same time.) Still hot though.
Many people will tell you he is funny. Many people are right. He is smart too. When you cut through all his crap, he really is insightful.
Take a former stand-up comedian, turn him into a political philosopher, add a british accent and not a small dash of insanity and you've got Simon Stow. The biggest nutcase you will ever have for a teacher, and the class is interesting too--it's great!
best teacher at WM. freakin hilarious yet clear about subject matter. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. if you don't go to office hours, you miss out on even more insight and humor. believe me.

Oh man, this guy's so great--funny and actually nice too. AND he makes political philosophy interesting, which is a very hard thing to do. You have to take this guy before you graduate.
Great guy, great class. Some of the stand-up routine gets tired after a while though, especially if you're from the right side of aisle. It's good natured, but nonstop. Two papers and a final pretty much make up the grade, neither who too hard (or too easy)
This guy is an overrated joke--he's condescinding, vain, and immature. Definitely not as erudite as he thinks he is. Do yourself a favor: take Lestor instead.
Anciet Political Philosophy. Very fun class, always very interesting. Meets with students to help them with papers and guide their ideas. My paper writing actually improved because I enjoyed the class so much and he was so helpful in his comments.
Don't take a Stow class if you're some kind of uptight prude. You definitely won't enjoy it. If you have a typical college sense of humor, you'll love his class! He's probably the only professor in the gov department who could make anicent political philosophy interesting and understandable. He's a fair grader, but the material is rather difficult.

i am genuinely amazed at how much i've liked his class. prof. stow took old texts that i've read a million times and gave me a completely new view of them. his papers are very challenging, but he is extremely willing to discuss the topics with you, so go to his office hours. working hard in his class pays off
This is one of the best classes I've ever taken. Stow is halarious, but he's also a great professor and a really nice guy. The class is managable and all the work (2 papers and a final)are demanding but really interesting. Very helpful outside of class. He'll be back Fall '06 - take him!
Professor Stow is awesome. His class is arguably one of the best offered at this school. His presentation of material is hysterical and interesting, he's extremely helpful outside of class- plus, he's just really cool. If you don't take this class you're missing out. He's challenging but it is well worth it.
He has such a great sense of humor and runs a very interesting class on a subject which can be pretty dull. My only complaint is that he gives HORRIBLE paper assignments and grades tough on them. However, his final exam is easy.
Stow is hilarious and brilliant and it shows in his presentation of the material. He puts himself out there to help you with the challenging papers, and he is a very fair grader. Keep in mind, though, that there's a line between teacher and clown for a reason...sometimes I wish he would just teach and quit telling us how funny he is.
Keeps even ME paying attention. Not necessary to read all of every text. Very deep, very interesting, very worthwhile. This class will stick in your memory, and you will always be glad you took it. Kind to the kids who have no clue what's going on, and veeeeeery helpful. Straightforward. Two papers, one final. Good class, good man, good GER filler.
If these ratings make him sound like a god, it's 'cause he is. Hilarious, adorable, and rumpled British academic who just happens to be a genius on the side. Hard, but fair, grader, and worth taking just for the sheer pleasure of listening to his well-constructed and witty lectures. Don't miss out on a class with Stow.
Kind of like Socrates in that half of the class won't understand what he's talking about, but will enjoy being amused. Paper assignments are almost impossible. The exam questions are impossible to predict. If you go to office hours, know what you're talking about or have questions prepared.
Extremely brilliant professor. His classes are exceedingly enjoyable. Unfortunately, he is a very difficult grader on papers. The way to do well in the class is to take intense notes on what he says in class and essentially regurgitate them.

Prof. Stow's class is like watching a stand up show everyday. So funny, also obviously an expert on what he's talking about, and one of the best professors - actually, the best professor - I've had. I'm so depressed he's leaving!
Hilarious and informative. Uses everything from Plato to Eminem to make his points-and it works. Seriously, just take the class.
HE IS THE BOMB! HE IS THE MAN! HE IS BALLING! HE IS AWESOME! HE IS LEGIT. HE IS EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO LEARN WHEN YOU APPLIED TO COLLEGE.
Absolutely hilarious! I HATED this class, but it had nothing to do with Stow. This guy went to Oxford, and he knows his stuff. Goes way too fast in lecture, so type fast or bring a recorder. You NEED to know what he says to do well on the paper/exam. Plays favorites in participation (likes frat guys). Worked my butt off for a B+, but learned a lot.
Hated the subject, but Stow is incredible. One of the funniest and most intelligent professors you can find. I mean, the dude did standup and went to Oxford, what more do you need?. Tough grader, but explains EXACTLY what he wants on exams/papers in class, so reading all the books cover to cover isn't entirely necessary. A- with minimal effort.
Engaging and funny. You have to do the reading (never more than 30 pages per class), which can be impenetrable (eg Plato's Republic), but he clarifies everything. Participation also important. One essay and one final - neither were easy but he very clearly outlines his expectations. Great intro to the world of philosophy for a newbie!
His dry wit and British accent made getting up every M/W/F at 8am worthwhile! Tough grader and reading material gets really dense when you hit the meat of the syllabus, but overall an enjoyable class. Only one paper and a final, so there's little work but it counts for everything. Attendance and participation important too.
His was my favorite class since I arrived at WM, but it was also the first in which I did all the reading, focused fully, and still fell short of an A. Do all the reading (which is very reasonable in quantity), participate in class, and go to his office hours. I have strong bromantic feelings toward Stow.
The class is very difficult, but Stow is a boss. He is absolutely hilarious, and can make even the most convoluted theories clear. Super helpful outside of class. The only grades are a paper, final, and participation (worth 20%), so read everything and speak up in class
Stow is a good guy. Sarcastic but funny. Class participation is very important to him, so it's not a good class to try and hide in. Sharper than most at realizing when you're BSing answers, but because he gives potential final exam questions out ahead of time, there's no need to. Doing well requires a lot of reading and good argumentative skills.
Extremely sarcastic and funny. Often goes off on entertaining tangents, but you end up learning a ton without even realizing it. Class isn't that much work--just one paper and a final--but he's very particular in his grading. You have to put in the effort, but it's worth it and you can definitely come out of the class without tanking your GPA.
His Contemp Political Theory class was awesome. He is so blunt, if you enjoy sarcasm and humor with lots of references to pop culture this is the guy! He takes things like songs by Dylan and makes actual lessons that make sense out of them. My favorite professor so far at W&M. He is not easy, you have to read, but its worth it!
This class requires that you show up, and probably that you do the readings. Stow makes it easy to do because his class is filled with engaging, intelligent analysis from start to finish. Not to mention that he is hilarious. His class is very enjoyable and the grading is fair and straight-forward. He grades on stuff that's actually been taught.
Stow is the best. He'll make you laugh every single class if you take sarcasm well. He is incredibly well educated on his topic. Hilarious guy. He is obsessed with good writing, so make sure you go to the WC for his papers. Do all the readings well in advance. He's mad hard but excellent teacher. If you're a gov major, take him.
Race, Rhetoric, and Poetry is the best class I've taken at W&M hands down. Every class he integrated different stories, clips from the news, movies, or songs to his lectures to make the more dense theory make sense. His sense of humor is fantastic and definitely adds to the class. Helpful with the paper. Participation is important. Fair grader
Remarkably well-versed in a variety of subjects. Integrates diverse material into lectures. I did not do all readings, but found that going to his lectures was the key! Extremely helpful/straightforward during Office Hours regarding the paper. (Grade is participation, paper, final). Made class extremely interesting and entertaining-very funny.Take!
I wish Simon would come back to W&M, he's a gem and a truly great asset to the school. So much respect for this man. It's an incredibly hard and challenging class, but so worth it in the end. Don't take his classes if you're trying to get an easy A.
He was okay.
one sentence review. Where has this man been all my life???
He's quite good. Seriously, sign up for one of his classes as quickly as possible.
Simon Stow belongs in the college professors Hall of Fame. Pretty much every class we couldn't breathe because we were laughing so hard at his lectures. The man's a legend, former stand-up comic, and one of W&M's greatest assets. His enthusiasm for the content is contagious and you'll be thinking about his lessons long after you've left.
Race, Rhetoric, and Poetry is hands down the best class I've taken at W&M. Stow is hilarious and incredibly insightful. The class material is fascinating and he presents the information in an entertaining way so you cant help but pay attention. 10/10. Take this class
Professor Stow is good, but his style is not for everyone--it wasn't for me. He's an entertainer, but his tangents are frequent and frequently derailing. The readings are engaging, but lectures became thematically repetitive. Clear expectations. I enjoyed aspects of the class, but it was far from a highlight of my W&M experience.
Greatest professor I have ever had during my time at William and Mary! He's so funny and nice, you can't help but like him! Best professor EVER!
He's one of the best. Every one loves him and talks to him a lot. Personally I went to many of his office hours and he's extremely helpful. Truly intelligent and inspirational. Fun lectures but could be a bit tedious. Tough grader. Famous for testing quotes from assigned readings and associated authors so make sure you read throughout the semester!
I loved RRP with Professor Stow so much. He has been my favorite professor at WM so far, and his class is well worth taking. He is absolutely hilarious, and his dry sense of humor never failed to make me laugh. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. He is beyond helpful and will guide you on how to make your paper better. ALSO DID I MENTION HIS ACCENT. It's awesome.
Simon Stow is my favorite. He is brilliant, creative, and hilarious. I have shed tears from laughing so hard in the past. His RRP class has reasonable readings you can absolutely skim and he explains v. well in class participation, and a paper and final. Tests on quotes. GO to his OFFICE HOURS and he will give you everything you need to succeed!!
Sometimes his hilarious rants made the subject matter confusing, and lectures got theoretical so understanding what was up in his head was hard. However, at the end of the day he REALLY wants you to succeed. I took this course as an underclassman and did well because of him. Office hours are great! And he is a genuinely kind guy, has a cute dog!!!
Professor Stow is really quite unique. He gives interesting lectures and cares to learn about each student when visiting office hours. Go to his office hours when writing papers and read as much as you can of the assigned works to help for the final. He does care that you're participating, whether it's in class or through email and office visits.
I loved having class with Professor Stow! He does assign a fair amount of reading, but he explains everything really well in class. There is a midterm and a final exam- and he's super accessible in office hours if you have any questions.
Stow is really funny and crazy smart, he'll open your mind and really challenge you. Take a class with him, any class! Midterm paper and final exam, you grade yourself on your participation and have the option of rewriting the midterm paper for an average. You don't have to do all the readings. Take really good notes when he talks about the paper.
Lots of reading but you don't necessarily need to do all of it. Just pay attention to what he says in class and you will be fine. He gives you everything you need for the paper and final. Very passionate and funny. One of my favorite classes
One of the best profs I've ever had. He is so funny, his lectures and theories are super interesting, and he really cares about his students. I would highly recommend this class (even though the projects and tests are a bit difficult).
He's a very "woke" professor as he likes to say. Some of his lectures can go off on tangents or be slightly confusing, but the course material is clear. Participate in class (doesn't have to be frequent) and seek help with the 8 page paper in his office hours if you want the grade boost. The exam is quotations and an essay portion.
Professor Stow was by far the best professor I had for an online class. He did an incredible job keeping the class engaged the entire 50 minutes, especially during particularly dull moments or when he could tell the class wasn't too energized that day. Was extremely helpful and clear in what was expected on the midterm and final. Great dude.
Professor Stow should seriously be a stand up comedian. He is caring and did Zoom teaching well. His content is unclear as to how it relates to political theory sometimes, but he's still the best professor to take this class with if you're just trying to knock out the gov req. Paper unexpectedly difficult so the rewrite option is great.
Professor Stow is FANTASTIC! The course covers books as opposed to a textbook. He is engaging and hilarious over Zoom. His paper was tough, but he makes sure to be available if you need help and gave a chance to rewrite with great feedback. If you have a chance to, I would HIGHLY recommend that you take his course, he is amazing.
Stow is such a homie. His lectures are super engaging and incredibly well-written. The only downside is that there are only two major grades for the semester, but he allows rewrites on the midterm paper. Definitely would recommend attending office hours when writing your midterm paper because he will basically tell you what to write.
If you want a good grade, you gotta kiss up to him. If you talk to him after class and try to participate, he is more likely to favor you and give you a better grade. He is straightforward about what he wants on the paper but he often diverts from the material. He's a great guy but the first paper basically dictates your entire grade.
You get three grades total (participation, essay, final). If you don't do readings or participation, avoid this class. Delivers every lecture like a stand-up comedy routine, for better or for worse.
The class is hard because there are only 3 grades: participation, one essay, and the final. You are able to rewrite the essay for the average of the two grades, which is a very generous offer. He tells you EXACTLY what to write about, so just listen. I would not take this class if you do not like to participate.
Spends half the time using class as a comedy routine rather than teaching. Is pretty funny until the last month of the semester. Besides participation, class is graded by two papers.
Stow is funny and engaging. He talks pretty quick so you have to pay attention. Students post notes to blackboard (automatic A in participation if you do) so attendance isn't necessary but I would recommend it. Only two assignments: paper and final each worth 40%. Can redo the paper but no extra credit or opportunity to improve the exam.
He cares about you doing well but isn't going to hold your hand all the way through. Attendance isn't mandatory for this class, but it's better if you go. Listen to the lectures and effectively write out the concepts he discusses in class for the papers and the exam. Great professor and hilarious. You can tell that he enjoys his job.
Simon Stow is absolutely fantastic. He an academic and comedic genius. Every Tuesday and Thursday morning I woke up excited to learn and laugh for 75 minutes. Stow is good a combining his informative lectures with a joke, music, or video to keep the class engaged. I would take this course or any theory course with Stow again in a heartbeat.
Hilarious professor, but his lectures can drag at times because he reads right off of his paper at his podium. Wants to engage with the students and makes jokes to relieve any tension in the room. There are 3 grades: participation, the midterm paper, and the final in-class writing prompt that he'll give you ahead of time.
His class was boring, even though I acknowledge that he definitely tried to make the lectures interesting. He is funny and charismatic, but I still found it so hard to pay attention. The content is in itself boring. The readings are also complicated. You really don't need to come to class. There are only 3 grades, making it very hard to do well.
Professor Stow is very funny and his lectures are entertaining. However, they're sometimes difficult to follow because he reads his notes off of a sheet of paper and the PowerPoints aren't incredibly helpful, so you definitely need to pay attention. He tries to help as much as he can on assignments. Graded on participation, a paper, and a final.
I got by without doing all of the readings but ONLY because I went to every single class. The readings are long and difficult to understand but he breaks them down during class in engaging ways. There are very few assignments that can seem intimidating. But you can do great on all of them if you meet with him!
Professor Stow is an amazing teacher and tries to relate to everyone in the class. He makes cringey/funny jokes which makes lecture time pass by. He cares for his students and is unlike most professors at w&m.
Attendance is very important because the big essay grade for this class is essentially based on your understanding of what he said in those lectures, but he's very willing to help if you have questions and he gives good feedback on your essay so that you can rewrite it for credit if you don't like how you did
Great and funny professor and an even better human. I loved taking this 202 with him. I got by without really doing the readings but you need to be there. Talk with him before your paper. Graded on participation a midterm paper and a final essay that he gave you the prompt for before and then you had 90 minutes to write.
At first glance, it might seem intimidating that Professor Stow's class has only three grades. However, the course isn't as difficult as it seems. Content-wise, the class is highly engaging, offering valuable insights into our perception of Black power in American politics. FYI to succeed, make sure to attend his and his TA's office hours!
Stow was likeable and funny, but lectures were boring as he just read off papers he has written. The grade consisted of only a paper, participation, and a final. You have to come to class, because he doesn't post any slides or notes. There were a couple instances of unfair grading policy. Not hard to succeed, but incredibly dry.
Professor Stow is a very funny man, but makes you self-grade on attendance and participation. His exams weren't terrible if you showed up for at least the review days, but his slides have so little information and all content is spoken in class.
Funny guy and nice, just boring lectures. You have to speak up in class every once in a while as it is a major grade of three total grades. He's not a harsh grader but a lot of it is philosophical. Readings are short for most part just make sure to do light studying throughout the course to know them well. Overall, great guy, I like him.
Your grade is comprised of participation, one paper (you can re-write), and the final. Stow is great, I think he's a super personable professor and super easy to get a hold of. He's very helpful, the lectures could've been more organized and participation is super important. loved his class.
Overall loved this class and Professor Stow is hilarious and just a fun guy to spend 2 days a week with! The paper was grader more harshly than I expected and that is the only real grade other than the final exam, so that was a little stressful. Other than that, I would definitely recommend!
I loved this guy. So funny, actually cares, nice, fair grader. You HAVE to go to class tho otherwise you're going to have a really hard time.
