I like him.

He's a great prof. Don't know what you all are saying.He teaches at Trinity, look at his ratings there.Those students take the class more seriously, that's all. Community college students tend to slack in classes like this and then get upset if they don't pass a class. I think that's your problem. Mr. V, you're cool!

Hell of a guy!

He was very dedicated to the class. He has tremendous knowledge in the field of chemistry. I would take any class he offers. He is hard but he pushes you to learn the material. It was no cake walk, if you want an easy A, better look elsewhere. He was still trying to adjust his teaching style to establlish his test difficulty. He's a fine man.

Doctor V was a great professor, really spent time to get to know his students and understood that life happens. Will spend every hour of the day helping students understand. There should be no reason for someone to fail his class. You will not be handed a grade for sure, but if you care enough to study, you should do just fine!

Very good instructor

Let's face it, I hate Chem, but Dr. V is super nice and very willing to stay after and help with whatever you need. People who complain about him are the ones that dont ask for help, dont show up and expect to get an A. This is college people and Dr.V is a great teacher. I suck at Chem but I went to him for help all the time and I got an A.

Extremely smart man and so sweet. He has alittle to much on his plate and tends to be a bit unorganized. It was the hardest lab of the 4 science classes I've taken. Final was insanely hard and it was open notes! Just overall very challenging but he is by no means a bad teacher!

Dr Van Dijk is great person. I just had a little trouble understanding him. You might need to see a tutor in addition to his course. Very willing to help and does not get frustrated easily.

He was a reseacher and knows what hes talking about, but makes it hard for us to understand. Be prepared to get or ask for help and attendence does count. He curves grades which helped out a lot. just be prepared to study

He is a very understanding person, he will work with you and answer any questions you might have concerning his lectures. I recommend this guy anytime!

He was a wonderful teacher. The class is difficult just due to the subject matter, but he was very knowledgeable and helpful.

Dr. van Dijk as a great professor. He is very helpful and will do everything he can to ensure you understand the course material. He treats you as a peer rather than a student and as such has high expectations. I would recommend Dr. van Dijk if you want to really learn chemistry.

Great all-around person. He is not a push-over. If you get an A it is because you worked for it. He's not going to spoonfeed you. He treats you like an adult and expects you to show up and do your work. (As college is preparation for a career.) He is VERY knowledgeable Chemist. Has much field knowledge to share. He helps those who help themselves.

He is willing to help students but he at times does not send assignments back to us or provide us with the correct answers before the test so students would make the same mistakes twice. His tests are really hard, I would make A's on all of my HW and quizzes but fail his tests. It is hard to learn during lecture because he goes too fast.

Amazing professor! He's so enthusiastic about chemistry :D His exams are very straightforward - what's in his notes is on the exam, and if you don't understand something, he is more than willing to help you out. I took his gen chem II class over the summer at NVC, and was fully prepared for organic chem and biochem at UTSA!

He's very helpful when you need it. Homework is usually more difficult than test. Review is very broad. Doing hw and quizzes are a MUST. Overall great guy had him for 2 courses. Only complaint is i wish he had done more examples like the hw/tests and that his review wasn't like a summery of each chapter. Not easy but you will definately learn!!

I heard so many horror stories about him and honestly its all nonsense. His class and tests arent hard if you put effort into it. He tends to forget about posting assignments but gives more time when he does. He is also more than willing to help with any problems you have.

Dr. Van Dijk definitely knows his stuff. His pace is quick and furious, but he laces it with humor and examples (could use a few more...) Being in class is a must if you wish to receive high marks. Completion of HW and Quizzes is essential to passing. Always helped when I had questions, just enrolled in his 1312 class + lab. Solid Professor!

LOVE HIM! I took 5 chemistry courses with him because he knows what he's talking about and has a genuine interest in his students. He is always available to offer extra help and will bend over backward for you if he sees you putting forth effort in his class. I would never take chemistry from anyone else.

this class is pretty tough, but if you do your homework, and use your book for the problems and study for those compounds, youd have to be a herp derp, who derps everyday to not obtain a A.

I deff reccomend him for lab. He goes over the experiment and calculations with you completely and he is extremely helpful. Very nice guy and he knows his stuff very well. He seems to be passionate about chemistry which makes it interesting. The only downside is that you are usually there for the whole 3 hours

Gen Chem is meant to be a weed-out class, meaning it's not easy, and requires a lot of time and dedication. And that would be expected of you in Dr. van Dijk's class. So, if you don't mind hard work, and actually enjoy science, you will greatly benefit from any of the classes this professor teaches.

Professor Van Dijk is a very brilliant man. He has a lot of insight on the subject matter and worked for years doing chemistry research. He is very helpful and loves to talk about Chemistry. This is not an easy course, but it is very interesting. Keep up with the homeworks and quizzes and you'll do fine. Study for exams.

Good teacher. Very demanding but fair. Lots to prepare and post lecture work. I LEARNED A LOT FROM ALL THE REPETITION. If you are looking for a walk in the clouds he is NOT your guy. Comes off kind of angry but is a nice guy and wants your success if you are WILLING TO WORK HARD AND ASK questions.

Dr. Van Dijk isan amazing teacher! His classes are not easy, but if you really want to learn, he's the best. I took him for 1311, 1312 and I have registered for 2323 O-Chem with him. I failed gen chem 1 once before, but I have gotten all A's in his classes and labs. He gives extra credit for attendance. Do the homework, it helps a lot.

Van Dijk is great teacher very smart and really knows his stuff. He doesnt assign too much hw and gives you plenty of time to turn it in. The hw is WAY WAY harder than the exams. He is always willing to help you but you have to talk to him. BEWARE: DO NOT EMAIL HIM he takes forever to respond if he even does. Over all this is a tough class.

This class is difficult if you do not study, attend class, or do the assignments. Van Dijk is very approachable and always willing to help. If I had questions I didn't hesitate to ask, and he was more than happy to explain it. I spent most of my time studying and doing homework. Attendance is a must. We also created a study group which helped.

Just finished Van Dijk's Chem II lab. It was a bit challenging since I had taken the lecture Summer 2013, but Prof. van Dijk was always willing to help during his office hours. He is a genuinely caring man who knows chemistry. I recommend him and advise to stay on top of the work, practice hmwk problems often, and study early for final exam.

Took Van Dijk for Che Lab. Van Dijk is a very sweet and helpful professor and always willing to help when asked for it. The only thing is he makes you work for your grade. This is not a cake walk like other chem labs at NVC. Every week you have pre labsmsdsassignments due that is checked at the beginning of class. This class is not for the lazy!

Ochem is hard. But this prof helped by having 5% added to the avg by attending every class. He always helped me when I went to his office. My biggest suggestion: read the book before class and always attend. Go over your mistakes in the homework. In fact, I would sometimes redo homework after it was graded. You have to work hard to master Ochem!

Simply the best chemistry teacher I have ever had. I have taken other high rated professors for chem before and did miserably. Not because of a lack of trying, but because of lackluster teaching. Van Dijk actually teaches you. Went from getting a D to an A. Take him and you'll be thankful.

I took Van Dijk for General Chemistry and this class was the hardest class i've taken at Vista. Is this class impossible? NO. U HAVE to work your butt off in order to maintain an A or B. His homework is tougher than the test and he is a very critical when it comes to grading. He is a wonderful person and truly cares but you have to put in a lot.

Love him so much I took first and the second semester, has always been flexible with office hours if his students needed help really a goofy nerd with a bit of an accent but not hard at all to understand. As a C student with hardly any bias, it really depends on the work you are willing to put in as well as communication with him.

Dr. Van Dijk is the best OCHEM teacher there is! He is so helpful & truly loves what he does. Reading the book & looking at examples on YouTube was so helpful for this course. There will be a quiz for every chapter and they are online. Exams are half MC & written. He teaches the lab portion as well & it is awesome. I would recommend him to anyone.

Nice, helpful, and knowledgeable. Only downside is that he uses slides too much, with not enough in class practice for calculations. Gives HW for each chapter (takes at least 2h each) that makes up a big part of your grade. 3 tests, MEMORIZE HOW TO NAME CHEMICALS AND NAMES OF IONS. Learn calculations. Both come up often. Open source textbook.

This was the most difficult course I had ever taken but I learned so much. Professor van Dijk is a very tough grader and will thoroughly grade every homework and quizzes. The tests are definitely not easy, but study a ton and you should be fine. It's a difficult course but van Dijk does a great job of teaching it.

He's definitely in the top 2 Chem teachers you could take. He's really nice and funny and often lets us turn in hw days late for full credit. As long as you actually study the material it's not bad at all. If you took any Chem in high school then its really a breeze. If not it'll be harder.

This class is not difficult but he does expect you to learn, understand,and apply material. He does give a lot of homework. However, the homework is much harder than the tests. If you understand the homework you will make a good grade on test. He does require a lot of memorization.

Dr. Van Dijk was awesome! I was so scared going into ochem bc of its reputation, but it wasnt as bad i was expecting! The material is definitely hard, But Dr. VD is always available for office hours and will happily spend a lot of time explaining things to you. Definitely recommend!! :-) Oh and make sure you study definitions for his tests!

Professor Van Dijk is a great Professor he can be goofy and does teach from slides a lot some say he can be difficult to understand. but I understand him well. he always asks about any question before class ends. available for after class also available during office hours. there are no dumb questions to him.

Lectures covered everything you need to know, but definitely get the textbook as a supplement. Read the chapters beforehand and do the accompanied practice problems. Most of those practice problems show up on homeworks, quizzes, and/or exams. Dont be intimidated by ochem, practice and go to tutoring/office hours and you should be golden!

He is helpful, and when you actually communicate any concerns or difficulties he will work with you. Posts all the reviews on homepage, every homework assignment he gives you two attempts. His lectures are very clear and helpful, don't understand will explain & give examples. Tests are hard if you do not put in the time to study and take notes.

Dr. Van Dijk is an incredible professor. He cares for the wellbeing of his students first. He's a little unorganized at the moment, but its because he's creating a course plan that is beneficial to everyone. He WILL help if you ask. He treats you with respect and genuinely enjoys the topics he teaches. Participation makes the course MUCH easier.
