awsome prof. makes things very clear and is very knowledgable.
very engagin, entertaining, knowledgeable
No Comments
he is nice
An excellent professor
lots of info in course, but he's very passionate, animated, intelligent!
he gets really into the lectures. very organized. great prof.
A little too animated some times. Very loud. Very knowledgable
Brilliant, engaging, eccentric.
he knows his stuff
Wicked professor...brilliant and enlightening.
he talks REALLY LOUDLY. bring earplugs if you sit near the front. your ears will hurt otherwise.
Took Crim 230 by Dist. Ed. Very helpful. Willing to spend time on phone. I found him very soft spoken, Down to earth.
took it by distance education, great books!
Amazing professor. He knows so much about everything - it's unbelievable. Follows order of CCW, so lectures are very easy to follow and keep up. Talks really loud - doesn't matter where you sit, you can hear him very clearly!
Prof Verdun-Jones is so into the course material it's scary. Incredible energy and enthusiasm. I would definately take a class with him again. As long as you do all the reading, this class is easy. Very clear on test material.
Great prof, but virtually lost my hearing. Warning: do not sit in first 2 rows as when he gets really excited he tends to spray as he shouts.
took by distance ed - awesome topics, papers, feeback. Readings very helpful. Learned a lot in this class, more than I can say for a lot of the others I took.
Simon, Simon, he's our man, if he can't do it no one can!!!
I dont know what these people are talking about, the course material (written by Simon) is garbage. For instance, the chapter about actus reus only talks about mens rea. He contradicts himself constantly, and runs the crim. department terribly.
Great notes and lectures; but, tough. Study for the final exam.
knows his stuff to the bone. Is interesting, made me more interested in criminal law. Very down to earth.
Excellent, intense, knows his stuff. Take his course and you'll never "actus reus" again!
he's definitely knows his stuff, it was a pleasure to be in his class. He's the reason why we should be proud of the criminology department. he's the type of prof that you would admire because he's so intelligent that he's almost bordline insane.
Verdun-Jones is so passionate about his teaching. His enthusiasm and energy really gets you into the class. Amazing professor and amazing course. Interesting content.
He is an amazing prof. If you don't like criminology, Simon will change that. He is brilliant and very easy to communicate with. Exams are tough but very fair. I would highly recommend any class that he is teaching! 10+++++++++
Great Prof; knows the cirriculum very well and he's interested in the course, so it makes it fun because he knows exact details about every case he talks about. It's an awesome class!
Excellent professor. My advice is to definitely take his classes. Clear and introduces interesting issues.
Dr.Verdun-Jones is not only a caring teacher, but also an exceptional person. He has reignited within me the academic skills and interests which I thought had been extinguished following some unfortunate events at SFU several years ago. He embodies the characters a professor ought to possess.
Great professor! Passionate about his criminal law! There is a lot to learn in his class. It is a shame to take criminlogy at SFU and not take one of his classes.
Wish he taught all the crim law classes! Great prof! Definately take his class if you can. His exams are not that bad- make sure you go to lecture. Whatever he talks about will be on the exam.
Simon is probably one of the most intelligent humans I've ever met, let alone professors. So passionate, so caring and genuinely interested in his students' lives. Don't leave SFU without a class taught by him.
An amazing professor! EXTREMELY intelligent and knows everything about anything. He is a caring and passionate professor, and reminds us what learning is about! Great student-teacher relationship
There is no teacher like him. Treats students with respect, He is always early in class, organizes his material and teaches like no other prof. Glad I had a chance to be in his class.
distance ed. dont know much abt the prof, but the course was interesting, although the book was not lol
V-J is very intelligent, can keep you interested for a three hour seminar, and provides outlines/materials that you will need to study with. He makes all case examples clear and concise, and seems like he loves teaching. Be sure to take one of his classes before you grad!
I H8 Crim Law. HOWEVER he is a fabulous teacher. Wrote his own books, awesome author. HE LOVES teaching, and he musta done it 4 a while. SERIOUSLY DONT GO TO LANGARA GO TO SFU 4 THIS GUY. (took both) he made law tolerable , even intesresting
Thank you Simon! Brings a humanitarian, ethical viewpoint to some difficult issues. Makes you think. Interesting style and most helpful.
this man DEFINATELY knows his stuff... very knowledgable. gets really into his lectures. tends to talk loudly at times, but it keeps you awake. essay and exams are fair. lectures are interesting. good prof!

He is awesome. He is very friendly, enthusiastic and engaging. Gotta love the names he uses in his textbook case examples. Make sure you do your readings. If you do, there shouldn't be any surprises when you write your midterm. Standout guy.
Dr. Simon Verdun-Jones is the BEST criminology professor at SFU! He is an excellent lecturer, and he is so passionate about his teachings. SIMON ROCKS!!!
No doubt the best prof I've ever had. I love you Dr. Verdun-Jones
Took it by distance ed and was a little reluctant due to the course contant. But the texts were easy to understand and apply to the essays. Assignments were straightforward adn the TA were very helpful. Study the last few units for the final and you will be fine. Got an A- and only opened the books when writing the assignments. Learned a lot!
Passionate about his teaching the law. Very assertive voice and easy to listen to in lecture. You can tell that this man was a Crown Prosector. I liked his lectures. but make sure u attend tutorials or u will not do well.
wonderful
AWESOME AWESOME prof. The best prof you will get! Knows his material, exciting lectures, useful.... Just Love this course. I'd take it again and again! =D
So far Simon-Verdun Jones has been my favorite prof at SFU. He is simply phenomenal! A very enthusiastic and brilliant guy to listen to in lectures. I feel bad for the people who took this course Distance Ed - you're missing out!
He is a great prof. He talks fast which can make it hard to follow but if you read the text you should be fine because he wrote them & they relate to lecture. Michelle is an awesome TA. She is a lawyer so she really knows her stuff. The midterm m/c were tricky because if there are two answers you must state both and no half marks are given.
Great prof. he is a genius which makes you intimidated sometimes. he knows the topic and details of every case he talks about! the subject is clear to him, so everything makes sense when he explains it, but sometimes they become confusing again at home! easy to get a good mark if you actually do some work
Amazing teacher and truly loves his work. Don't think this class is a joke. He explains things really well but you do have to put some effort in to get the A. Good course though and recommended. Not an easy GPA booster, but definitely not hard either.
Not easy, but good course
he's one of the best! he is very enthusiatic about what he teaches and it shows in his teaching style. he is so flexible. he may seem a little intimidating but dont be scared to approach him. he's great! definately recommended!!!
This is a tough course. Michelle L. is the TA for the course and marks everything extremely hard and she gives no half marks, so you have to know everything in full, which is stupid. When you go and ask her why you did bad on some questions she just becomes excited and anxious and does not care about why you did not get 2/2 on the short answers.
Simon is a great lecturer, however, his TA Michelle is not. Mid-term is very difficult and we are told to write 2 sentences for the short answer, but once marked, she clearly wants more. Hard to get a good grade in the course as there are no half marks awarded on exams. Michelle is a nervous wreck. Not a GPA booster by any means.
Do not recommend. Verdon-Jones talks very loud during lectures and it is hard to stay awake. If you enjoy getting low marks and endless memorization to a 'T', then take this course. However, if you want an A, this is not a course for you. Exams are hard.
Misleading exam criteria, they say they want one thing before the exam but after the exam they change the criteria and give you a really low mark. TA's unreasonable and does not stick by her word. I wouldn't recommend this class. There is too memorization and the textbook is very wordy. Overall, this course is difficult.
Course material was fair. Lots of memorization but the exams werent too difficult. Just follow the lecture and take good notes and suppliment with text.
I love how the person 2 comments down wrote two bad comments just to make Simon's mark go down. Simon is a great prof that requires you to work for your mark. It's a really neat and fun course otherwise! If you do not put in the effort, you will not do well. Maybe this is why Simon got a bad mark?
Cool, but hard.
This is an extremely useful and interesting class! And I agree with everyone before me that this is a class where you must work hard for your grades. Just make sure you do the readings each week before you attend the class and you'll do fine. Michelle may speak too fast sometimes, but she is willing to clarify it again for you after the tutorial.
Took by distance. Midterm was take home fact pattern, as were assignments. TA Michelle is communicative, helpful and intelligent. You may bring the Criminal Code to your final. Lots of memorization of cases, but overall very interesting, and Verdun-Jones' textbook is amazingly clear. I would definitely take another class with him.
One of the best CRIM profs for sure! Very passionate about teaching..lectures are interesting..exams are fair
Favourite crim prof. He gives you the final exam q's BEFORE THE EXAM! Must take one his courses in your SFU career.
Final exam was hard. Tells you which concepts are important but there is too much to know. He has a passion for the course but expectations for final are somewhat unrealistic.
MUST attend lectures and MUST read ALL the textbooks if you want to do well. Textbooks are lengthy but they are all required readings. Must attend lecture and listen to him as he explains the concepts in more depth. Interesting and very useful course. Exams are fair. Dr. Verdun-Jones talks very clearly and he is nice and friendly.
The class moves at a very fast pace but the materials are clearly covered in class. For most parts, students will find themselves time crunched for multiple choice and short answers questions and he does mark very hard (tell Theresa the TA marks very hard) I would take him again, as he is a very good to teacher.
You will NEVER fall asleep in this class, Dr.Jones is very loud and very fun!! good, fair marker, makes fair exams, but you HAVE to go to the clinic before the exam cuz he covers EXACTLY wuts gonna be on the exam and what the exam is gonna look like. you dont have to attent classes, but do go to all of the TUT since the TA's cover everyhting
You cannot leave SFU with a Crim degree without taking his class. He is one of the best prof and so far, one of my fav. The course is not easy and you really need to work hard for it but it's extremely interesting. The readings aren't so bad either... the exams are fair. (Typical crim exam) The case was a bit hard though (final).
one of the best profs that ive had. makes it really interesting and uses lots of examples to make everyone understand. go to the clinics before the exams! very helpful and attend tutorials the tas go over everything you need to know.
He is a very good teacher, very fair.
I love his class. He is so much fun! He is interesting and entertaining!
I liked his lecture and he is a great prof. I also liked his books as well -- very helpful and comprehensible. Using examples always helped me to understand the concepts.
What a great prof! Really made this class interesting. Fair exams. The only really difficult part of the course was the fact pattern question in the final....brutal! But, on a whole I really enjoyed this class.
Almost 4th year, one of the best profs I have ever had thus far! He is absolutely knowledgeable and highly qualified for the subjects he teaches/talks about. Great examples, very animated and engaged in class discussion/very passionate about topics and course over all. Exams-Very good. Midterm EASY, Final requires higher level of topic understandin
Best prof at Simon Fraser. Even if you are not a crim or poli sci major, you can still get an A in this class by doing the work and keeping up with readings. Not an easy class, but helped me grasp Canadian criminal law.
Best Overall professor i have had so far! Not a super easy class, but it is challenging and you will learn a lot. He is really passionate about the material, and knows it like the back of his hand. HIGHLY recommended. GREAT prof.
Very good. is your planning to be a lawyer or anything related take him. But remember to cite your cases!!. he is a great prof.
GO TO CLASS - He is hilarious and makes Crim super fun! Sit in the back he is pretty loud. Do the reading and go to class and you will understand the material without a doubt, he is great at explaining things.
This course is pretty good in distance ed. format. A small assignment, a term paper and a final exam are the components of this course. Course material are pretty interesting but there are tons of readings. Be prepared to work hard and you can achieve a good grade.
great professor!! keep lectures very interesting and uses a lot of cases to signify his point. the course material is heavy and requires you to remember 12+ cases for the exams, but honestly the exams are not hard. if you go to class and do the textbook readings, you'll do great. an A is doable. highly recommended!!!
Awesome prof, the best there is in criminology. Very clear and makes lectures very interesting!
i was very interested in this topic (mental disorders). i took this class dis-ed. there was a LOT of reading each week (all articles on webct); average of 7 articles, approx 20pgs each. i don't think there was much structure with the assignments. i think the only reason i got a good grade in this class was because my TA (Adam V) was awesome!
Simon is a great prof who is very passionate about the material. While he clearly has his favourites, he is sensitive to students needs and goes out of his way to make sure everyone understands and is involved. He's not very good at facilitating conversation though, and will often talk over you when you try to participate.
I took this class via distance ed. There was a lot of reading, and little direction in terms of the assignments. However, the final exam was pretty straight forward. Nevertheless, I think it would be best to take this course in class with Simon Verdun Jones rather than distance ed.
Amazing prof! Makes class super interesting and the textbook is easy to follow. Loved his class!
Unbelievable prof, he has been at SFU forever and is extremely knowledgeable. He is quite an easy marker if you put the effort in to do a good job on the presentation and paper. Very helpful: e-mail for my paper outline and he responded with half a page of feedback and suggestions, and he spent almost an hour after class one day with my pres group.
Very accomplished, very interesting.
Taken online extremely difficult to do well.
I took Crim 230 with Simon a few years back. He is undoubtedly one of the most knowledgeable profs in the Crim department. While the material is quite dry, he illuminates it well with relevant cases that help you understand the material immensely. Don't sit up front though, he has the tendency to yell unexpectedly haha.
Dr. Verdun-Jones is an amazing prof. His lectures are exciting, his use of power point slides is excellent, and his explanations are both useful and interesting. I would defiantly try to get into one of his classes again.
He's a great speaker that always manages to hook your interest and keep you hooked. With all of the examples he uses, there's almost no way you can get stuck on a certain concept; he's easy to approach if you do get stuck, however. Might not want to sit at the very front though because he's very loud, even without the mic.
Interesting and enjoyable course material if you are interested in criminal law. Many interesting cases. Prof's lecture is informative and helpful but powerpoint slides are a little distracting.. hard to follow.
He is so enthusiastic during the lectures. Gives a lot of appropriate case examples relevant to the topic that makes it more easy to understand the course material. The exams are pretty fair. If you attend his lectures and as long as you read the case readings, you are good to go.!
Simon is an excellent professor. I wish all professors were like him, he truly wants his students to do well. There is no tricks to his exams it is straight forward, if you go to class and read the books you will do great. His lectures are funny and very interesting. Highly recommend taking one of his courses!
The professor genuinely cares about the students. He offered a bundle of examples which really helped with the notes. He invests enthusiasm which makes the class engaging! Overall, he's great!
I took this via distance ed. First off there is reading and more reading and more reading Talking like 200 pages worth a week. The paper is worth 50% of your final grade the final is worth 40% of your grade and there's a 10% for an article critique thats the break down. My TA Joanna was useless for help and input I would not suggest this class
He does not post slides online or have lecture recordings available. However, the CCW is all you need to succeed in this course. I attended lectures and used the CCW exclusively for studying for exams, and did not read the textbook, and managed an A in this course without too much effort. Overall a fun and easy class.
Awesome prof! I did take it online and there is not much work needed. Keep up with the readings in the textbook to help you do well on the final. The TM was awesome for the course, extremely helpful and fair grader. Did not need to memorize prev cases for the online class anyway!
Great prof! Uses lots of memorable and humourous examples to explain concepts. Lectures and readings all complimented one another really well, which made it easier to grasp difficult topics.
One of the most entertaining professors I've had - very animated and engaging during lectures which made going to class fun!
Love this dude. Though he accidentally spits sometimes, its cus he's so passionate when he talks. Knows his material REALLY well. Exams can be tricky, but if you know your material, you're good to go. Go to every class. He should teach more classes.
His final exam was so hard, but that was partially my fault. His class is clear and fair. Honestly, your experience depends on your TA. I interacted with him twice throughout the whole term. You don't need to read the Criminal Law textbook if you pay good attention in lectures - they're basically the same. Custom courseware lifesaver.
There is a lot of reading you need to do for this course... and I mean a lot. The subject material is very interesting nonetheless but expect to be able to tie things together on your own. There was no textbook though so that was a plus! The assignment instructions are also very broad... which was troubling for my class. Tanya was a great TA!
Clear with requirements. Final exam topics were posted ahead so we had time to prepare. Flexible and easy to communicate. Highly recommended.
Loved this class!! Lectures were great and content was interesting. Honestly would take it again if I could.
Simon is an amazing lecturer. His lectures are really explanatory and allows students to really understand the major concepts. Read his textbooks, but the coursebook, and the case book. They are LIFESAVERS!! Lectures will make much more sense if you actually take time to read the textbooks. Also, Open clinic for Finals really helped! Recommend this
Very interesting lectures and overall a fair marker
Interesting professor, great
Amazing lecturer, definitely go to class because he makes it way more specific. Make sure you do the required readings as well. Overall a really great class and professor.
Dr. Verdun-Jones is easily one of the best professors at SFU! His lectures are crystal clear, entertaining, and engaging. I managed an A+ in the course barely reading the textbook because he goes over everything so well. The custom courseware will save your life! Midterm not bad, final was more difficult with the scenario cases. Would recommend!!
Best prof I've ever had in SFU. Super interesting lectures. Encourages you to not take notes and just listen to him. He talks in detail about real-life cases, and then you read on your own about all the theory. Not hard at all if you put in the work!
Simon is the worst professor ever I met in sfu
Simon is an amazing prof! He has so much passion when he lectures, would recommend you don't sit at the very front because he spits a lot! Exams are straightforward study the courseware and read the text you'll be fine if you put in the work Take the tutorial with Marsha-Ann, she the real MVP
Best prof at SFU, lectures are interesting and the tutorials are helpful.
Amazing, funny guy. He uses a cane to walk and its cool to see him walking around while yelling about crime. Hes awesome! Can't wait to have him again!
Low-key failed his course, his lectures are hella tight though
I took an undergrad Crim course with Dr. Verdun-Jones at SFU in 1976. From these reviews, it doesn't look like he's lost his engaging delivery style, intellect, or passion. (Gained a cane, though!)
