he likes his farm animals and boxer shorts! :)
absolutely hilarious, well informed prof! interesting class, highly recommended
This guy is awesome. Very funny, knows his stuff, makes material interesting.
A great, interesting prof. knows his stuff and passes on his enthusiasm.
He's a great prof....class is actually fun with this guy!
JUST AN AWESOME TEACHER
As long as he likes calvin and hobbes, everything is cool...
He is my mentor!
Great prof! Fun class! he's George Clooney gone Rock n' Roll!!!

Great prof. Easy class that is still fun and interesting. Can learn a lot about good music from him. Like the hippie look too
BEST class ever! I already liked music and he just made this class so much fun! He knows exactly what he's talking about and is very down to earth with the students.
This course is the best course ever in UofW! I tripled my music knowledge taking this course.. his lectures were awesome. videos, music, and he even showed off his bass guitar skills :P Take this course! lots of rock though...
such a fun prof! it didnt even feel like class. tests and exam easy, as long as u do the readings. would DEFINITELY take another one of his classes!!
funniest man ever. held my attention for the three hour night class every monday night--nothing short of a miracle
I'd recommend this class to anyone who likes music. Simon is such a nice guy and an awsome teacher. You'll walk away with a much better knowledge of popular music and it's effects on culture and vise versa as well as a great collection of music.
Professor Wood is a very enthusiastic teacher, and generally a fun guy. He teaches the course quite well; provides lots of listening, video and even personal performance examples. Overall, a great prof!
So much reading, good luck remembering all that crap. MC tests can be somewhat difficult. Easy to pass, hard to ace.
An extremely easy class which is very difficult to fail. Prof is easy to understand and keeps the class interesting by showing videos and bringing in his guitars. However, he is not efficient with time and could've covered a lot more in the 3 hr lectures.
Prof.Wood is entousiastic about teaching the course, which is also very good. He is very approachable and does a great job by incorperating music, videos, and playing music himself. This course really made me want to take music even more!!!Thanks
Best night class ever! Simon Wood is one of the most enthusiastic professor's I've ever had. The class is moderately easy but so much fun. You come out of the class a LOT of knowledge about popular music and how it's influenced society. Simon loves kiss & hate Celine Dion,it doesn't get any better.
Everyone must take this class with Simon! This is one of the best classes I have taken and one of the few classes that I made sure to attend every night. If you like music or history you will love this course. He never quite made it to the 1990s lectures though.
This class was amazing b/c he is an incredibly funny guy and knows how to keep the class interesting. There's lots of reading with tons of information you WILL need to know. Although his tests are hard and you need to know exact dates the class altogether is a great experience
Okay, so this class is not as much of a bird as everyone says. This prof is particular with details, as in dates, names, etc. Having said that, this is a great course and he is an amazing prof. The class is very entertaining and you acquire a lot of musical knowledge. Tests and the exam are MC q's.
Good interesting class lots of really neat information I never knew but testing pretty hard. This class is easy to pass but getting a high mark is not as easy as you may think. Definately not a bird course but prof Wood was a good teacher and I liked the stuff we covered.
This guy is amazing! So much fun
awesome prof. very funny and interesting.
AWESOME course, AWESOME prof. go to all the lec and an 80+ is guaranteed. funny guy, down to earth. good bass player. helpfulness?? who'd need help for this course!? very clear and articulate. easy tests. most enjoyable course in my life. you learn stuff you probably won't be able to forget. tests are like rock'n'roll jeopardy...A++++
VERY VERY good course and amazing prof! I highly recommend it to anybody, ever... The textbook however sucks, so the questions on the tests on the textbook I didn't do so good on... but otherwise go to the extremely entertaining lectures and you'll be fine.
AMAZING COURSE!!! the best prof i've ever had!
Casual to the point of catatonia. The slacker hipster greybeard somehow "lost" my final grade and cost me the unit. Like Nietzsche said, "Beware the hand that with kindness - kills." If he sounds too good to be true, he probably is. Kiss this!
Wood is amazing.
Amazing class!
Awesome class!
This class brought music back to life for me. Simon Wood is like a one man show, which is good because with a night class you can get sleepy. I would recomend this class to pretty much anyone.
amazing prof!
The class itself is amazing. Simon is a good prof, and is very good at keeping a night class entertained. Videos played in class are fantastic, listening list is great...I don't know if I can say enough good things about this course. And, of course, Simon is a good prof...he makes it pretty obvious what he wants you to know for tests.
Totally trivial - turns what could be a great class into a series of multiple guess questions. Totally sad...
He's cool
A great guy and he's funny too. Class was fun to go to and he is very fair. Take this class if you want a course that is not to heavy yet you will still learn a fair deal.
Here's the deal. I'm in math. The classes are usually intense and lots of work. But this class was an ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC way to get away from Math/ Cs. It was a good break for 3 hours. Tests aren't bad at all if you show up to class. Simon is the man! Recommended Highly! Take Music 140 with the same prof also. Great class.
hot, hilarious, and helpful...hot in an older way but still hot. This prof has a great personality and cares about the content of his course enough to make it interesting for the students! Be prepared to work for your mark obviously, but otherwise enjoy the ride!
First off, I want to say this class is super interesting and informative and Wood is a great Prof. in that way, saying that, his tests are ridiculous. He seems to forget this is an elective first year course. And he gets some sadistic pleasure out of tricking and confusing students on tests. Proceed with caution!
The class is fairly interesting, but the prof makes it horrid. His tests are difficult, unless you know the material inside and out. He believes that every student should be satisfied with a 70. Agreeing with the person below, if he would cut the crap and only talk about relevant topics in music, we could leave early from class.
He is by far the best prof I've had in UW.He's very funny.I've had some pretty good laughs in his class & have told his stories to my friends. He's an excellent prof who make a 3 hour class so interesting you'll look forward all week to his class. The course is very informative, musically & culturally.Go to class, pay attention, take notes, get an 85!
Amazing Prof. Amazing material. Entertaining class. Just a break from Math and Computer Science. Didn't even buy the book just went to class and studied 2 hours for the tests and got A+. Best prof best course highly recommended! just a blast..a break from painful reality of being a Mathie...
The professor is entertaining and the course is fun and easy. Those of you that thought it was hard should do yourselves a favour and drop out of University. I'm a science student with a solid C average and this was the easiest course I've ever taken. Still worth while though.
Awesome teacher teaching an awesome class!
I personally love this course. It's the only course I've taken since I got to university where I'm actually SAD when it's over!!! That's right! I wish the lectures went on longer! I've learned so much more about not only music but also American history! This course has expanded my mind and I absolutely love it. It's a must take!
Agreeing with the last person. I was actually sad when the class ended... probably the best and most entertaining class I have ever taken. Simon does a hell of a job. Tuesdays will not feel the same.
Best class I've ever taken! SO easy, so interesting! I learned so much about so many things. It is really a history course, and you learn everything you wanted to know. Slavery to copywrite to Elvis to technology to the Beatles to Hip-Hop! And there are plently of sexy girls.
This was easily the best course I have taken in university to date. I must agree with the other posters: I looked forward to this class every week.
Prof Wood brings music history alive and is an amzing prof. He is very passionate and knowledgable. Overall a really easy class, just remember to read through the MC question carefully. There are usually 3-4 trick questions, but the midterm average is usually in the high 70s to low 80s.
One of the best profs I've had in my 4 years at UW. He makes the course really interesting and has a great sense of humour too. The material is easy to learn, easy to study, and easy to answer questions on in exams. A MUST TAKE COURSE (and prof)!
totally kills it! verrry knowledgable, interesting and funny! tests are relatively easy. textbook significantly supplements his lectures. really glad i took the class! and i'm getting a telescope! hahaha
Soundtracks was a great course, and Simon Wood made it even greater!! I learned so much about music in film, and the class was SO much fun! He's a good teacher and very entertaining. The course is easy for people with musical backgrounds, but still requires reading and studying.
This prof is awesome! I can't get over how much fun the lectures are every week. Tests are relatively easy if you go to the lectures and take notes. I look forward to this class every week! Uncle Simon is the man. If you have any interest in music, take this class.
I've had Simon for 2 terms in a row now, and he is honestly the best prof I have had in my four years of university. I look forward to lectures every week because the course content is incredible along with his entertaining teaching style! As a non-UW student, I have so much respect for the university because of his classes.
AMAZING professor. I couldn't wait to come to class because he made the lectures entertaining and fun. One of the best profs I've ever had. I was sad when class ended! If you get the chance, take a class with him. Go to class, listen and read the text book and you'll do fine!
Awesome Teacher! Probably my favourite course at UW so far. Recommended to all. Especially engineers looking for an easy but interesting course
Ok, he's a super nice guy and loves what he's teaching. Good prof. Hard to concentrate as the course is a 3hrs night class. If you're in Eng looking for easy elective and you don't want to put time into your class - i wouldn't recommend it. His mc tests are very tricky and you have to know the fine details. Harder than i thought it would be.
Best prof I have had at UW, and not just because the course material was easy to learn and interesting. He cared about what he was teaching and it showed. Trying to get into MUSIC 246, his other class, for next term. I've recommended this to all my friends here, and my friends at Mac as he teaches there as well.
One of my favourite profs I've ever had. He has an incredible passion for music and it made me so much more interested. I actually enjoyed the 3 hour lectures! Pay attention in class (it's easy) and you'll do fine.
Great prof. He keeps the class interesting and fun.
Really interesting class. Simon loves what he does and is great at it! I would take this course every year for my elective if I could.
Simon Wood made my first year at University of Waterloo amazing. I was always looking forward to his class every week. He is hilarious, easy to listen to, passionate about what he's teaching, and I applied what I learned in this class to every other class and even got a role in a tv show thanks to him. Simon Wood's classes are the best!
Simon Wood is an incredible professor. His courses material is the only stuff that I actually remember. He is by far the best professor I have had yet. He makes 3 hour lectures interesting.
He is the BEST.
GREAT professor! Very passionate about his teaching, great speaker, great at keeping entire class interested for 3 hours. What you learn in this class can be applied to everyday life. Go to class and take good notes and you will do great!
Coming from an engineering student with 80+ average, I was not expecting a 66 in this course. Material is very interesting and Simon does his best to get the message across. The multiple choice exams are tough if you do not know the material 100%. I also did not purchase the textbook. Highly recommend this course for anyone interested
The best prof I have had throughout university! He is funny, knowledgeable, passionate, friendly, helpful and interesting. What a fun class!
Loved the course. Loved the prof. He is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he teaches. Even though I only have a high 60s grade in the course, I really appreciated it. It was very enjoyable.
Class is interesting for a night course. Wood is a very lecturer but seems a little condescending. Content from the textbook will definitely show up on the midterms and final but he'll tell you exactly where to study from. Deliberately tricky multiple choice questions are tough. For a history of pop music course, HIST105 with Hunt is much easier.
He is the best prof. I would recommend that everyone take this class if you're interested in music. He's very funny and really keeps you entertained for the whole 3 hours. The multiple choice exams can be tricky but if you've studied the material you should not have a problem.
Took 140 with him and just finished 246. I found 246 much more interesting, and he's still the same funny, interesting professor! Take courses with this guy!
Good prof. He is a good storyteller. If you read the textbook and go to class you will do well in the course. Funny guy also. He has an engineering background so he understands the technological aspects of music history as well.
Best prof at UW! Took both classes and would've loved to have full-year courses in both. Has great stories about the subject matter, and is incredibly passionate about what he's teaching! Tells you exactly what pages from the text to study. Only downside is that they're night classes, but it's worth it to attend his lectures. A must-take prof!
Awesome prof, awesome lecturer, awesome guy! Really nice, reasonable, fun, and a genuinely good person. And it helps a lot that he likes Beatles. Had fun attending the lectures, and stayed to chat a bit sometimes. Wish I could have him for another class
Don't take this course if you already know a lot about popular music. I was irritated by the many inaccuracies in his lectures, which were often common misconceptions. He seems to like listening to himself talk more than he liked the material. Also, the course wasn't about the MUSIC! Hardly any samples of the music were played. Disappointed
Took this course for a breadth requirement and enjoyed every moment of it. Great professeur very entraining for an evening course and learned a lot about music and pop culture. Definitely would advise taking this course if you want a great prof and great course that is definitely filled with laughter most days :)
Best prof, he is so funny and makes his lectures actually enjoyable. Highly recommend taking this class if you're interested at all in music, requires next to no work.
He's extremely engaging and most classes don't feel as long as they are ! You learn a lot of really cool and interesting things about music and how it has developed. I missed one class and definitely regretted it, so GO TO CLASS! It's definitely worth it!
a good prof, but multiple choice term tests are hard if you dont study. Makes sure to do the readings as most of the material from the textbook will be included on the tests.
This guy is pretty interesting and is quite eccentric. However, his lectures went rather quickly for a 3 hour night class, and is very entertaining. He doesn't post any lectures online so you have to come to class to take notes (or have a friend). I very much enjoyed Music in Film, I've learned a lot and would take it again.
Great professor!
Best professor ever! 140 is the most fun I ever had in class, even though classes were at night and 3 hours long
Simons Music 140 class basically saved my 1A term. His class is one you look forward to every week, regardless of how long the lecture is or the time it's at. The class is easy to follow and you'll do great as long as you show up. P.s. no homework, ever.
Extremely fun class, prof was so cool, wasn't a chore to just pay attention which could be attributed to the course content but the I'd sit through Simon explaining CS 245.
Professors like Simon only come around once in a while. He is an exceptional professor and is very passionate about the subject. Being a 3 hour night class, he was able to keep the entire class fully engaged, especially with his humour. The class was a ton of fun and I would highly recommend it!
Amazing prof, able to keep your attention for the full 3 hours at night. You must attend or have a reliable friend as he doesn't post any course notes. Learned a lot in this class especially given my limited knowledge on the topic, very interesting! Personally had to study very hard and memorize a lot of specific dates to do well on M/C tests.
Lectures were interesting, he was able to keep the classes attention throughout the 3 hours. Just have to make sure you take some kind of notes, as he doesn't post anything online.
Awesome Instruction. Impossible to sleep in his class.
The best prof I've ever had at uwaterloo. Very entertaining, engaging, and relevant.
AMAZING PROF! I loved him so much. Such an amazing prof, effortlessly learn when you attended. Its like he is telling you story and it makes studying super easy and the exams super easy.
Simon is one of the best profs I've ever had. He's hilarious, and he has a lot of knowledge about music. He's always willing to help and give you feedback on your tests if you feel you didn't do as well as you hoped. I don't think I've ever not laughed in his class. Definitely recommend!
Best course of my undergrad.
Dr. Wood is amazing, he was caring even though it was a large class. He conveys the content in an interesting way, and everything he chooses to include is important or fascinating, but usually both. He had everyone laughing every week without fail. This class was over too soon. 10/10 would take again.
Simon is such a great prof, he loved what he taught and made the 3hr night lecture worthwhile. Never a boring class, always worthwhile. Definitely suggest going to class because it's worth it.
Without a doubt, the best prof I've had at UW. He's clear with what he expects. Very funny and keeps you engaged with relevant facts, stories and jokes. Textbook reading is an absolute minimum as he tells you which pages of the book he'll test you on. Super easy multiple choice, easy 90. He doesn't post any notes, so you will have to attend class.
This man is a bro. I wanted to stand up on my desk on the last day of classes and go "O Captain my Captain".
Simon Wood's MUSIC 246 class was amazing! While you do have to show up to class as he doesn't post his lectures, it is so worth it and truly enjoyable! Though he assigns textbook readings, you don't have to actually do them; before each test he'll tell you exactly what sections he's testing on. A great course, would 100% recommend!
He is by far the best professor I've ever had. He is hilarious. He is extremely knowledgeable. His lectures are extremely fun and honestly if he made them public they'd be a hit podcast. Definitely recommend this course and him as a professor to anyone who's doing an undergrad. I'd have taken it even if it weren't counting towards a credit.
Great professor. Very funny and is AMAZING at teaching. His lectures are super entertaining. 150% recommended.
