Stimulates engaging discussion, very lively and funny. Thouroughly enjoyed being in her class!!!
nice lady but a VERY BORING class. didn't learn anything. but all that counts is your GPA.
She rocks!!!! She'e very enthusiastic and passionate about Social Sciences you're awesome Siobhan!!!!!
ok this class was a bore, but she TRIED so hard to make it 'fun'. she is such a nice, lovely person but you just cant make a class like sociology fun. however, i didnt crack open the text more than 3 times and i passed with an A. its basically opinion + the 3 theories. memorize the theories and your'e set for an A~
she is the kindest, most open minded individual...she is extremely helpful and shes just a wonderful person...her class was great, not boring i dont know what the last few peoples comments about, her movies were great and discussions were great as well. her essay ideas exam and presentation projects really kept us all interested and i learned alot.
If there were a category labeled "Hours I Can Never Get Back", this course would fit like a glove. NO format for written assignments, NO structure to class, and most classes after the mid-term had an attendance of less than ten people -- which may be indicative of the uber-dry atmosphere. I rolled the dice with Siobhan and ended up crapping out.
She's very passionate about her subject but she's quite flighty. The class format was structured by the students making it really easy to get a good mark. Class discussions were hard to instigate, so the room was often quiet and the time dragged on.
She's a very sweet and passionate individual. Group presentations take up WAYY too much time, but they spark some pretty good debates sometimes! Get involved and bring up sociology vocab and she'll be impressed. Very helpful, accommodating and down to earth, although sometimes unclear on her assignment expectations. Interesting class though!
Excellent prof! Probably the most lenient, understanding teacher you will ever have at Douglas.
Would not take this class again... It in my opinion had the potential to be very interesting an engaging. Contrary to this though it has been dull and dreary and a complete pain the ass. The assignments have been incredibly vague and I haven't learned a single thing. Lastly, the the teacher is caught up in the 70's and is very naive in my opinion.
I loved Siobhan. If you are a concerned with society or world issues, she is your go to gal. She is so knowledgeable and wise. Very kind and understanding. Lenient when it comes to assignments and due dates. I would to have another class with her if the opportunity arose.
Siobhan is great, treats her students like equals. How refreshing is that? If you take interest and put effort in you'll get a good mark. I agree she can be a bit vague with assingments but she is a great teacher and makes sociology fun!
She is probably the best prof in the world. Her class was really interesting for me because I love sociology (not everyone does). I hope I can have the opportunity to take another class with her. As well her discussions were interesting and thought provoking.(I got an A+).
What started out as an interesting class turned into one in which you felt like a grade 5 student. Colouring name tags, and drawing comic strips are not university level. Siobhan had obvious favourites in the class. She was not good at explaining herself and disliked questions meant to clarify what she wasnt thorough on. Not impressed at all
She is such an amazing person and prof. If you make an effort, you will do good. I took her 3 classes, and I got A, A, A+. She is not organized, but that's her personality :P She has a lot of passion towards sociology and makes the class fun. Such a nice lady!
She is an extreme feminist that consistently berates men for creating patriarchal society. The book is hardly read and she plays favorites. Her hair also gets in the way of reading notes and she flips through notes extremely fast. Also has a tendency to be annoying, avoid at all costs.
very nice prof. she seemed to be very clear about her expectations for presentations and written assignments. pay attention and participate in class and you'll do fine. sociology was fun because of the lack of constraints in the class, people could comment and bring in other perspectives which helped in memorizing concepts. interactive learning!
Siobhan is clear from the beginning of the class to what her expectations are in her class. If you do the readings, her in class lectures (which are fast) will just be review on what you already read. This is an introductory class that is intended to introduce you to sociology and I believe it did just that. I recommend this teacher.
Awesome and really helpful professor. Highly recommended.
Very nice woman who is passionate about what she teaches, very kind to everyone and is very patient while tending to everyones educational needs. Awesome prof, would take again.
Great teacher, clear instructions and outlines. Lectures cover textbook material, discussions are interesting. She is very nice and passionate about sociology. Overall enjoyable class
She is an excellent prof if you are interested in the subject of sociology. I would understand if someone did not enjoy if not interested because it can be dry. She shows excellent films that are very intriguing. She's. very passionate and very understanding. Outlines for assignments are not in her class but they would be helpful = downside.
She's very passionate about sociology and the environment. Tests are straightforward. Uses power-points that are easy to follow, and super interesting.Going to class is a must as she doesn't post notes online. Lots of outside of class assignments, readings and work, but worth it if you're into environmental studies.
This was an awesome class that made me fall in love with sociology. I don't think any other teacher would've had this effect on me. She really knows what she is talking about and is so encouraging in everything you do.classes are very interactive, you get to work and discuss in groups. no final no midterm all fair marking & tests paper is open topic
this class is a sure GPA dropper. She is the toughest marker I have encountered at douglas in almost 2 years. Very subjective marking and she marks your written 10 page research paper as though she was an English lit prof. Avoid this class if you can!I am a straight A student and could barely meet her expectations. She loves her topic and it shows.
It was my first semester at Douglas, she made her classroom really comforting and interesting, plus she doesn't do a final or a midterm. I would really recommend taking her, she really knows what she's doing. :)
A great teacher, had very clear and easy to understand lectures. She is a very charming person and makes even the most boring lectures interesting. Makes participation easy. She gives outlines on each test though I recommend taking notes on key ideas. Very fun and relaxed class, make sure to participate though she makes it easy.
I love Siobhan, she is so helpful and down to earth ( others may disagree but meh ) I would definitely take another class with her again
I am currently taking General Studies for credit for when I choose my major. I chose to take Siobhan's introduction to Sociology, and I must say she is a fantastic prof. She is very friendly and welcoming, she makes her classes fun and engaging and the work she assigns is very clear on how it is to be done and how it will be graded. Awesome prof!
Great prof, lectures are interesting and she is an easy marker
Siobhan is a great professor overall, she is helpful, funny and nice. She didn't really give any homework; you just have to read the textbook and then there's one paper. The tests are SUPER easy, but she is a tough grader for the written answers (in my experience at least). I would definitely take her again.
Siobhan is a good professor. Her exams are easy short essay questions. Would take again
Siobhan makes her classes very enjoyable, she likes to have participation during lectures to generate some discussion rather than talk for 3 hours straight. She is more than willing to give help to those who ask and her exams are easy but you need to know the material. Fantastic prof, would take another course with her again.
Notes aren't posted online. If you miss a class and don't do the readings, too bad. There were way too many assignments: presentation + 5pg follow up paper, dialogue presentation that took 3 weeks to prepare for + 5pg follow up paper, another 5pg paper, plus 3 exams. Also, super tough on her marking. Overall, I had a bad experience in this class.
Amazing prof. She is a very intelligent prof. It is clear she wants her students to succeed. I found that the textbook was a great source of information as the lecture slides correspond with it.
Very unorganized. Many of the dates on the course outline were wrong, does not post slides online. Also she is very unclear on what she is looking for and what the exact assignment even is. However, she is very open and friendly. Environmental sociology was a extremely boring but easy class. Prof is welcoming but her structure is terrible.
This prof is super helpful as she always is very humble. She is a very interesting lecturer and the notes are mainly from the textbook as it was easier to prepare for her exams. She gives you a study guide which helped me do well in this course.
By far the most interesting professor I have taken. If you like listening to stories take her. She is good in the way that her stories are relevant to what you are learning. She is very easy to talk to and very flexible.
I started attending her Social Processes class with no idea what sociology was, it was a mandatory class for me. By the third class I realized how passionate I was about this subject and I plan on taking many more sociology classes in the future because of HER. Siobhan was literally amazing,so inspirational and she knows what she's talking about!
I really enjoyed her class and decided to take another with her this semester. I do wish she would post the slides online in case you miss a class. She has a great sense of humour and really makes the class comfortable. As someone who rarely would input in discussion, I found myself doing so frequently in her class. Great prof.
Siobhan was a great teacher, her lectures were lengthy and took up most of the class but she covers 99% of what will be on your exams! She is hilarious and a really good teacher that I would highly recommend. The only downside is that she doesn't really clarify anything about your papers, the criteria is unclear so make sure you talk to her.
Siobhan Ashe was a good professor. She was very passionate about Sociology and made the class enjoyable. Her tests were easy as you are given an outline for the possible short answer questions on the test. Overall the class was good and in terms of difficulty wasn't that hard. I do recommend that you take one o her classes.
Siobhan has been one of my favourite professors so far. She makes class super comfortable and enjoyable and is clearly passionate about Sociology. She's super understanding and is more then willing to accommodate any reschedules in tests (with proper excuse, of course). Gives full test outline with the short questions you will be asked. Loved her!
Siobhan Ashe is the one of the best professor in Douglas. She is kind, very positive and enthusiastic in class. She's always ready, prepared and organized in her lecture. She's remarkably passionate and willing to help her students all the time. She's a good marker as long as you do your part and complete all the requirements in the course.
Siobhan is one of the best profs ive had so far at Douglas! I didn't think I would enjoy a sociology class as my major is in crim, but she made it so enjoyable and I actually loved it! I learned so much and she is so chill. She doesn't care if you hand in assignments late and she always gives good feedback. Her class is never boring either!
Siobhan was very kind, she always stayed behind after classes and was very helpful with answering questions. The biggest downfall was that she used up every last second of the class, with only a 10 minute break. But great prof overall.
ashe is a teacher that has effected me personally and made me view society a different way. she is very passionate and good marker
She will help you if you go to her and her assignments are fun. You pretty much have to participate in class to get a good mark, and she has to like your contributions when you do. If she is the only prof for the class you want to take, take it, but I don't recommend her if you have a choice.
Really good teacher, she is kind of broad in what she is looking for but I think she just wants her students to be free in their projects. The only think that bothered was that she mentions environmental issues ( such as pipeline) a lot during her classes, which are contradictory subjects that have no place in a classroom.
Siobhan is such a great instructor, gave us a lot of great ideas. Interesting events and projects. Not a tough grader. She wouldn't upload her PPT on the internet, make sure you attend every class.
i have taken two courses with Siobhan and she is truly amazing. She cares about her students success unlike other profs who really don't care, and she is so passionate about what she teaches. As long as you follow her criteria for exams/papers, she will give you the grade you deserve. Just show up to lecture and follow instructions!
I love her class! She is so kind and caring, she loves having a class discussion and tries to get you into the mindset to learn. Also, the textbook is actually enjoyable and engaging!
Siobhan is one of my favorite profs at Douglas College. She really cares about her students and you can tell she has a passion for teaching. Her lectures are powerpoint based but she makes them super enthusiastic! Definitely recommend her classes.
Siobhan really made me love sociology her lectures are interesting and all projects are completely laid out for you so you just have to follow the instructions! had one presentation but it wasn't a bad one. Midterm and Final we received a study guide which really helped
Was unable to do presentation due to heavy snow and was allowed to do it the next week since I showed her proof of completion. Next week comes, she tells me that she does not have time for my presentation so I have to present during the last week and redo it to make it relevant to the material being taught that week. Term paper guidelines unclear.
Siobhan is an overall nice teacher and I enjoyed her class. She doesnt post her slides online so you have to write your own notes during lecture. She makes you a do a few large assignments and a class presentation. Theres a midterm and cumulative final, but she gives review guides for them. I also found her to be a tough marker.
never taken a sociology class and she made it fun! shes clearly very passionate about what she teaches which makes the class easy to follow along, i really loved this class and would tell anyone taking sociology to take THIS COURSE!
Overall, she is a nice prof with good intentions. Her class is easy BUT super UNORGANIZED. She doesn't give clear instructions on what she is looking for in her assignments. Final essay, no one knew what to do. I did the paper entirely wrong and had to reconstructs it the night it was due because of the lack of criteria she provided.
Unable to teach online. Was completely unorganized the entire semester. She wouldn't properly inform if there were new discussion forum postings to be done. She had us do the dumbest project called a "DiaBlog" which makes as much sense as it sounds. Overall, the class was a bad experience, and she marks hard on the exams.
I am not to sure why reviews are so harsh for her, She is gonna be one of your fav prof if you take her. She is sometimes difficult to get responses from, but other then that everything is an easy A. These people complaining obviously weren't paying attention in classes because she is clear with expectations but you decide what to write.
Siobhan's nice but not tech-savvy. She doesn't really know how to use BB, so it's difficult to find instructions, assignments, etc. She's passionate about sociology, but it's difficult for her to convey that online. I had high expectations for this course but was disappointed. This class is probably better in person. She gives extensions, though!
I really love to hear her personal experiences on interviewing people and collecting surveys. At times I also feel lucky to have a professor like her who have had a direct conversation with some people who are very well known for their famous contributions to sociology. I am also happy to see her love for nature.
Simply love her classes! she is at times a little slow to respond to emails, but other than that, I would love to take her classes in the future as well. She is also very experienced. I don't know why some reviews are harsh but there is no way she is tough. I would recommend my friends to take her classes because they are really nice.
She was the worst prof I have ever had at Douglas. I'm a second year student and this was so bad. She never answers email, nothing makes sense in her class. her lectures were long, bad wording used. I don't recommend her at all. She said the work load she gave was fair but unless you want 3-5 assignments to do per week I don't suggest taking her.
I feel she is VERY disorganized with BB and all the assignments. Her assignments could be interesting, but she put so many things around them that we all end up bored. Weekly you have to make 1 discussion board and 1 blog response. Discussion boards were good, but in the end, she starts putting 2 per week and long videos, so it's time-consuming.
she doesn't know how to navigate BB and it shows. very unclear when explaining assignments, as well as having odd due date times. not super tough at grading, but super slow at doing it given how many assignments we had. not responsive at all. extremely heavy for a first-year course.
she makes participation worth 30% of your final grade. not everyone can/are able to participate within every week's 1-2 lengthy discussion posts.
Super nice and chill prof! Really cares about her students and what she's teaching them. Loved her soci1125 class the lectures were interesting and she was great at explaining things. Would definitely recommend and take this class again. The only thing I would change is to give more time on exams. Other then that was a great semester!
She's a great prof who really cares about her students. If you struggle at all she is very helpful and listens to your concerns. Her class is easy yet very engaging as long as you put in the minimum effort you will get a good grade. Highly recommend taking any of her classes!!!
The negative reviews you see are from students who were not paying attention during lectures, and were most likely fresh out of high school. Siobhan is a knowledgeable professor who clearly excels in varying areas of what is taught. Her course is very lecture heavy but covers the main ideas of the textbook thoroughly. Be prepared to put in work.
She is fine but she gives a lot of homework and also she never responds to mails.
Siobhan is a very nice lady, but she just doesn't know how to use BB. You have to do a presentation in this class also, which isn't terrible. some questions on the exams we never learned in class, and there are not enough time soon exams. the workload is fair just a lot of discussion posts. but overall she's okay.
great class/prof, very passionate about sociology, if you don't have the textbooks you should be okay (lots of references tho), tests are online but are hard (expect 100 questions), easy and fun class overall you have 1 major essay and presentation and bunch of small assignments online and in class discussions (every class). great prof tho
Siobhan is very passionate about sociology. She doesnt know how to use BB and will never reply to your emails. She is a very nice and kind. Her exams are online (expect 100 questions) but they are hard. Expect to do a presentation in the class worth 20%.
You can tell Siobhan's passion for her field by the way that she gives her lectures and speaks about certain topics. Except for one presentation, the textbook isn't super important as long as you take notes during her lectures and do the homework. If you're interested in sociology, she gives a really good intro course and is helps you if you ask
Way too much content for an Intro class. Get ready for your life to be consumed by this class. Didn't like her teaching style either, I felt like I had to teach myself every week. Can't use BB well and it's just a mess.
She's a very kind, and caring person. Open-book tests, and weekly discussion threads for marks. All in all, I'd hands-down take her again. She's very approachable and accommodating of disabilities, and creates a safe learning environment for all. Easy marker, with very interesting content, and easy-to-process lectures! I highly recommend her!
Sioban is really caring and extremely knowledgeable . She gives extensions and she is very approachable. i do not find her class super hard. her assignments and exams are clear and fun. the textbook was useful for the exam but you can survive by taking good notes and checking her slides. great prof i wish i have more room for electives with her
Unbearable class and professor would never take her class again
Her expectations are to high for students in a first year class. She has many major written assignments due that are not weighted a lot. Which means you have a lot more work to do that isn't worth much of your grade. She also disorganized and scattered and takes a long time to get back to you if you email her.
Such a sweet lady! Her lectures were pretty heavy but you're good if you read the textbook along with it to further understand her topic of the week. Also the criteria on the papers was very clear as she graded it by sections!
She is a great instructor. She gives out lots of assignemts (3 exams, paper, paper outline, and paper), but it gives lots of chaces to improve grade.
she was okay for me. the tests (3) were all multiple choice but the questions were difficult for me since she gave us a study guide yet it didn't help at all and the questions were so random. she had other things such as a paper, outline/paper, and presentation that helped bring up my grade. she was really nice overall and had fun discussion groups
Boring class. Material wasn't all that hard, but grading rubric on major assignments was very unclear. Discussions were also very opinionated. Not the class or the prof for me, but by all means take it if you'd like. She is a nice lady.
Great professor, class was always kind of boring though. Tests were multiple online which was nice, no final exam, papers were fairly easy as well.
She was incredibly passionate about what she was teaching which was really helpful, and her lectures were similar to the readings. Her exams were all multiple choice and there were no finals! This course was fun, informative, interesting, and I learned a lot. Definitely take this course if you can
Great Professor! Helpful for assignments and allows easy marks by doing a discussion board challenge every week worth 1 mark for just completion. Exams are multiple choice, one presentation is a requirement it is oral 5 minutes, and a research paper. There is a written component for the presentation, which is 2 pages. Lectures were engaging!
Teaches 1-1 from slides that are made up of “required readings” thus making reading them at all moot. Tests are easy. Any other assignments's difficulty will vary on if she likes you or not. Despite her personality, she's a rigid “teacher” if she can even be called that. Class is not hard so long as you can shut your brain off once or twice a week.
