From an education perspective, she is an AWFUL teacher. She assumes the worst about students and has unrealistic expectations. She isn't clear its her directions and then is very rude and condescending when her students don't understand her. She will literally punish her students because they don't understand.
Chemistry is a hard subject, but Dr. Shay makes it doable. I'm glad I took her course!
I really enjoyed having her as a professor. I think that Chemistry is difficult anywhere but she was very approachable outside of class and willing to help. Exams were tough but there was plenty of extra credit opportunity. Textbook wasn't very helpful unless you didn't understand a topic. She gives good notes in class.
If you love pointless multiple group projects and being judged too critically on everything you turn in, then this professor is for you. It's really too bad she's the only professor who teaches chem1090. Take any other chem class if you can.
such a terrible teacher. honestly i don't know how she has good reviews. she's rude and the tests are bull. I got a decent grade in the class but only because i taught myself everything.
Not very good at explaining the topic she is teaching. You need to study to get the grade you want to get. . everything was self-taught i 100% counted on the curve to get my A. I would get 63% in the test and with the curve it would round up to a 94%. She wants her students to do well and cares about their grades, but not a good teacher.
Dr. Shay is a wonderful lab professor for quantitative analytical chem. She keeps students on track but also creates a very low-stress lab atmosphere, where the class can talk and joke while learning and doing work. She is a tough grader, but always available to answer questions. Very glad to have her as a lab professor this semester.
Dr. Shay is expects a lot from her students. If you're not willing to put in the work, then you won't get the grade you want. Just like every class in college. Chemistry in general is a difficult subject. However, Dr. Shay provides detailed outlines of her notes and is ALWAYS willing to help. Whether it be email, appointments, etc.
Dr. Shay is a very good professor. She explains everything well in class and is very approachable outside of class. Whenever I was confused on something I went to her office hours and she was willing to explain it to me. A lot of online homework but makes it easier to keep your grade up. A couple group projects, nothing too hard though.
Dr. Shay made the introduction to Chemistry content at a university level far more difficult than it needed to be. Although she knew the subject very well, she neglected to properly aid her students to a successful semester. She expects too much from her students; therefore, believing that her course is the only thing that anyone has to do.
A lot of people said they hated her, but she is a really great professor and she challenges you for sure. You can't just memorize equations to pass, you need to make connections because the quizes and tests are difficult. She is great to ask questions one-on-one, but she doesn't like questions in class. Good professor
Probably the hardest person to listen to. Her voice alone wanted to make me bolt for the door. In order to complete all of the homework plan to put aside 6 to 12 hours a week. Do you like to read the board? Hope not because when she erases she just lightly smears the chalk over her writing and you can no longer see anything she writes from then on.
Expect to set aside anywhere from 6-10 hours a week for homework. The amount of homework is ridiculous and the tests are hard. She is very approachable outside of class for questions which helped. I am a straight A student and thought that this was by far the hardest class I have taken. However, she does give lots of extra credit which saved me.
The class has a ton of homework but it all really helps solidify the information. If you don't understand something, all the homework really helps you relearn the material. Most of the homework is extra credit so make sure you do it just for the extra credit. She's really helpful and she is great with communicating her office hours for help.
Took Chem 1090 my first semester and expected to get a B, which I did. Lectures were decent, albeit a little boring. Definitely would reccomend taking notes and showing up to every lecture to get credit.
The structure of her class made learning so much easier. She would lecture and then give practice problems and LAs would make sure we knew how to do them. She offers plenty of EC and is always available if you are struggling. Overall, I really enjoyed her class and although it is lecture heavy, she keeps you engaged.
Shay was an amazing professor who knew what she was talking about. If you want to get a good grade in the class you MUST show up to lectures and do the homework. It isn't an easy class but it isn't hard either if you put in the work needed to pass.
Dr. Shay was a great lecturer and made you want to learn. There was a lot of homework, but it really helped and was all online. She gives note packets that are fill in the blank and make it easy to follow along in lectures. Going to class is important, but it is easy to receive a good grade if you put in effort.
Dr. Shay is extremely approachable and is fun to talk to. Even though the class is very homework heavy, she is very available to answer questions. She teaches the lab that goes with the class and is always very resourceful. She is fun when you get to know her and can seem intimidating at first. Easy A if you come, and do your HW.
Lots of homework, I will say that. Though the homework was so very repetitive and a burden to do, it really did make sure we mastered the concepts. There are assignments after every lecture, huge chapter assignments and study modules. The exams really weren't that bad and the LA's held study sessions during the weeks of her exams.
This class has as much work and information as 3 classes put together. The homework is busy work and will have you doing assignments everyday and even on exam days. She will even put questions on exams and quizes that you would never have seen in lecture or homework. Better hope you remember chemistry from high school...
The class is so hard. It sucks
This class is STUPID hard. The in-class work does not prepare students well for the exams at all. I wish I didn't have to take chemistry, but my major requires it. If you want to do well in this class then you need to be an actual chemist. I hated this class and didn't feel I got the help I needed.
Gen Chem is a difficult class to begin with but be prepared to work A LOT. Most of the time the exam questions are not from previous lectures or homework... usually stuff you've never seen. There is an extreme amount of homework that takes 8+ hours each week. The one good thing was you took the multiple-choice part of exams separate but on lockdown
Get ready for a tough semester. She is really nice, but assigns WAY too much work on PearsonMasteringChemistry. WAYYY too much. One assignment was predicted to take about 18 hours. Good luck!
She was fine, but it was kind of hard to learn from her lectures for some reason. I learned more from my LA in the class than I did from her. There is also A LOT of homework that takes a lot of time. Overall, I would take her again but only because I already know what to expect.
Absolutely tons of homework. Unforgiving during COVID, and annoying assignments. She answers questions when you have them, and will make sure that you understand, but be prepared to spend 4x the amount of time doing homework. There are roughly 10 assignments due weekly.
Shay is a very nice and personable. You can tell she cares about her students. She is also very organized and most things are pretty easy to find on canvas. There are also chances for extra credit on homework and exams. The only negative is she sometimes takes awhile to respond to emails, but most of the time responds fairly quickly.
You cannot take this class and pass if you are lazy. There is lots of homework, projects, reading, and classwork but it makes you learn the material. The tests and homework are hard and lengthy but if you study you'll be fine. Dr. Shay is a great teacher and is always available to answer questions. PARTICIPATE IN CLASS. ASK QUESTIONS. WORK HARD.
Take this class if you want your GPA to drop. She is hands down the WORST "teacher" ever. This class you will teach yourself. Absolutely horrible.
I definitely felt there was a lot of work done outside of class, specifically with the homework with the online textbook and watching pre-lecture videos, but it really helped to grasp the concepts though tedious. Dr. Shay always answered my questions and made sure the class was understanding the material. We did a lot of group work.
Dr. Shay is very helpful in providing feedback if you are confused. The lectures right now are different than normal thanks to COVID, so it's a little difficult and you must work extra hard. But, utilize the LA's help and do the homework. You can earn extra credit through homework, which boosts your grade.
Amazing professor
Honestly, she is one of the WORST professors Ive ever had. Because of covid I had to take this course online, and Ive emailed her 4 times throughout the semester with questions and still havent gotten an email back from any of them. Also, SO MUCH repetitive homework each week, you will spend roughly 8 hours a week doing hw for just her class.
Siobhan is a pretty great prof. Good organization, and plenty of opportunities to get extra help. If you struggle to get work done, consider not taking a full 18 hour courseload- there is a lot of homework. But the homework has bonus points, and helps you master the material. Seriously, just do the homework and you'll do great!
I really enjoyed this class. The first weeks made it seem very difficult, but once you get the hang of it, it's smooth sailing. It is important to do all the homework and read. She is a great professor, and the exams will be easy if you use her provided exam reviews. Only negative is the group projects which were bad for my grade.
She will make it very clear that you usually aren't worth her time. Kind of rude at times, doesn't take feedback well, very unforgiving on grading. The class is doable but be prepared to spend literally every waking moment stressing about it.
Be prepared to either buy Chegg or spend hours of your day spending time doing homework. Lots of resources which is nice but still overwhelming and remote has made it harder. Spend most of your time in lecture in a small group doing work I got lucky and had a good group. Lots of review sessions before test which is nice. Gets harder through semestr
This class was horrible if you have a chance to take it with anybody else DO IT!!! I didn't learn anything the exams were VERY HARD!
A lot of homework and group projects plus the lab which gives you even more homework. The exams arent impossible but she gives a final cumulative exam at 8 am and it was impossible. Too much work for chemistry
Other than the hours and hours of unnecessary work, I enjoyed this class but would never take it again. Chemistry is my favorite science and this class almost made me lose interest in it. And this is no disrespect to Dr. Shay. She is a wonderful professor and person but the work is just too much on top of other classes and work.
I didnt like her. She assigns way to much homework to you that takes 5+ hours some nights. She acts like you dont have a life outside her class which essentially true now. You will have no free time. When not doing homework you are either studying for the tests that are nearly impossible or trying to get ahead on work.
The amount of work needed for this class was a bit ridiculous. There were pre and post lecture assignments for every lecture, on top of in class work. On top of that there were in class projects, out of class projects, and 4+ hour assignments at the end of each week due on Sunday. All of this combined made for a very stressful, unenjoyable class.
if you cannot do all the work on your own, you have no chance at passing.
Professor Shay is smart, and her lectures are informative. But, this class requires to watch almost 7 prelecture videos a week (ranging from 15-30 minutes in length), as well as attend all classes and recitations. She builds her class on the assumption you will spend 10 hours outside class a week (15 total) , and not take any other classes.
Dr. Shay gives out a lot of online homework. There's also a lot of prepwork you need to do before lecture. Be prepared to practically live on your computer if you take this class. She offered extra credit for attending on low attendance days, which was nice. If you study, this class should be a breeze, but be prepared to work.
She gives you opportunities to succeed in the course. Here are some of my tips: 1 SPACE OUT TIME. She has no hesitation in assigning these reviews that can take 3+ hours easily on Sunday. Make sure you do them bit by bit after each lecture on what you learned that day 2 Watch the prelectures. They help so much 3 Go to review sessions, the LAs help
She teaches a tough class but she'll get you to learn. Lots of homework, due every class, and sometimes online homework includes non-necessary topics. Attendance is a must, she has daily Learning Catalytics that add up if you start missing class. Tests are tough but not extreme. A lot of work but if you do it, you're gonna know your stuff.
If you has to choose between her and Blass; fasho choose her. I will warn you attendance is mandatory, the LA's don't know what they are talking about majority of the time and depend solely on the packets so don't waste to much time with them. One thing about Shay is she gone assign some HW so be prepared. Rain sleet or snow. Her exams are cool.
Do homework. That's the secret. Stay engaged and make sure you know what's going on; you will drown otherwise. There are 3 group projects so prepare for those as well. Make sure you go to the review sessions the LAs give; I found them helpful. I got an A for every exam, and from all the extra credit, I only needed 15% to get an A on the final!
Using the slides posted on canvas makes following along in class easier. Be ready to do prepwork before lectures, but in my opinion it's manageable. All homework is online and you don't lose points for getting answers wrong as long as you get it right eventually. Very approachable and kind if you have questions
Dr. Shay always had great lectures which go in great detail about subjects, although I would still reccomend reading and watching her pre-lecture videos before hand, as it gives you an idea of what you're learning before you get in the class and then you can ask question.
I liked Dr. Shay's class because she was good at explaining. For tests, she gives points based on your work, even if you got the problem wrong, and for attendance. The homework was good at boosting my grade, but the Sunday night homework would take me a couple of hours each time, so I would advise not leaving it all for the last minute.
This class is not worth it unless it is mandatory. The homework load is heavy and very time-consuming (2-4 hours to do) and not very helpful when it comes to helping your grade because it is not worth many points. Her exams are very heavily weighted and can make or break your grade. She is smart but doesn't know how to teach well. PICK ANOTHER PROF
The content and class itself was not hard. But as a teacher and a person, awful 0/10 would not recommend. She is condescending, she says she is sarcastic but uses this as an excuse to make her students feel inferior. She clearly knows what she is teaching, but she could use some training on how to be a teacher.
She has no understanding that people actually take other classes. If you take this class, you will spend 12+ hours a week for just her class with all of the homework, group projects, pre and post lab assignments, and pre lecture videos. Very harsh grader on projects and exams are difficult. Save yourself from stressing this much for a 3 hr class.
This class is a good introduction to chemistry and lays groundwork without being difficult. Class was enjoyable and Dr. Shay made chemistry fun.
Be prepared to have homework almost every single night. You cannot miss a single lecture and make sure to do every single learning catalytic. I am not sure if she realizes that most students have other classes too and don't have all night every night to study and most of the learning is done yourself so be prepared!
Dr. Shay seems to have no understanding that students have more than one class. The 12+ hours of homework for this class are insane. Exams tend to be extremely difficult. Three projects with two being group projects. She is somewhat approachable but she is extremely intimidating.
She is a very hard grader and the tests are extremely hard
I took biochem with Dr.Shay in her first time ever teaching the class. I think she did an alright job, The lectures were very boring and during the lectures, she had little assignments to do that counted as "attendance". The class was very group oriented and the final project was a major group project. There were 3 exams but not cumulative.
I thought Dr. Shay was a great professor. She's funny, and cares about seeing her students succeeds.
Dr. Shay (she insists on the title) has no idea how to teach, is very condescending, her TAs arent very helpful, her grading is absurdly nitpicky, and she gives the homework equivalent of a 5 credit hour class, and that's just for the lecture. The labs are done out of order and often are ahead of the lectures so she has to "explain" it in the lab
Lots of homework, not sure if she knows that we have other classes. The pre lecture videos ARE the lecture, but she doesn't want to actually teach so she puts them as pre-lecture videos and expects them to be watched before every class. The homeworks are hours long, and she assigns multiple projects. DO NOT RECCOMEND
Very involved and want you to lean, but the amount of coursework is very demanding for a lower level science class.
Taught things that were not relevant to the course she is picky with grading and not willing to work with you, and ignores many emails, but when asked about them said she received them. She is very condescending and gives a long speech about how she must be called doctor. She is probably the worst professor I have ever had, do not recommend.
Do not choose her to be your professor! She is so picky when she grades and nothing is ever good enough. She thinks that she is the best professor when she doesn't teach us anything and won't answer questions. The TAs are useless so it's on you to figure out what she wants. Straight A student after two years in college, but idk after this class.
If you put the work and read the book you can get a good grade. Her slides and very vague and lectures got boring. Exams were all extended responses. Group project at the end of the semester
By far at BGSU this is the worst professor I have ever had. I don't understand how it is possible to assign someone to teach a subject that they themselves have no idea what's going on. I digress, however. The material used for class was absolutely redundant with her voice adding on to the misery. Makes things difficult and is absolutely useless.
Dr. Shay is an okay professor. Her lectures are very informative, and she is a pretty fair grader. The class is a bit rigorous with weekly assignments that can take multiple hours and three big projects. My best advice for this class is to not take it with anatomy and manage your time wisely. Exams are given biweekly, but they aren't worth much.
I only just started her class this semester and I am already struggling. When I had a question about the homework she seemed annoyed that I didn't understand nor did the ta. She also doesn't clarify if something is graded until it is too late and has affected your grade. I have already spent at least 5 hours working on one assignment with help.
would not recommend taking this class unless you have to. Lower level science class but there's more work in this class than other higher level science classes. She gives ridiculous exams biweekly, 10 times harder than any example problems she does. piles on a huge “Project” that's really a huge research project. I wish they would just fire her!
Dr.Shay is cool & good at lecturing. But there is way too much homework/general work; it's unnecessary. I wouldn't recommend taking it along with another class that u know will also be rigorous. However bc of this there are a lot of resources to help u succeed if u find urself falling behind. You can easily teach urself the stuff u don't understand
Attendance is mandatory, it wasn't a bad class, Dr Shay was very understanding and always willing to help. If you took chem in high school the first month of class was just review but it got harder. Definitely study and try your best to learn the material cause it comes back.
I thought that Dr. Shay's class was easy and manageable as long as you keep up on homework. There is also a group project at the end of the course, but it was relatively quick and graded pretty easily. She also gives a lot of partial credit on exams and lets students have a notecard while taking them.
I thought Dr. Shay was a very reasonable and understanding professor. She was very generous with partial credit on exams. Attendance wasn't necessarily mandatory but being there to complete the in-class assignments only helped your grade. If you put effort into doing the homework and studying, there is no reason why you shouldn't do well.
Siobhan Shay is an interesting teacher. She lectures well and will stop to make sure that the material is understood. She assigns daily homework on top of weekly homework on top of group projects in large lecture hall settings. It's not the worst thing in the world but if I didn't have to take this class, I would never even consider signing up
this is the worst professor that i have ever had. she doesn't teach and if you ask questions she will not give you answers. awful teacher.
Dr Shay shows she is knowledgeable of all things chemistry, but she is not the best TEACHER overall. She is a pretty tough grader. She is super nice one on one and her labs are informative and fun. This class is challenging but you will get out what you put in.
This is by far one of the worst professors I have had. It got to the point where the only way I was learning something was by teaching myself. The power points that are provided are useless. If you ask if she would slow down, she will make you feel stupid and respond with “If you can't keep up, maybe this isn't the class for you.” There's more…
If you can get around taking this course, I would suggest it.
CHEM 1090 is absolutly brutal. the average test score for the entire class is like 50 something, and that's for a large lecture hall class. There have been 6 closed book exams already and it's not even finals yet. Looking at 6+ canvas assignments/week.
this was worst class I have taken of all of my college experience. The class has up to 8-10 weekly assignments with projects and exams every other week. She acts like this is the only class we are taking and should dedicate our lives to this class. She is rude in general. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Super bad grading system, crazy amounts of homework, WHO ON THIS PLANET PUTS A FINAL EXAM AT 8 IN THE MORNING. ESCAPE AT ALL COSTS.
