he's cool.
dr. omar is very nice and helpful, but i found his lectures hard to follow. i felt he tried to cover too many topics in lectures. he tests on the most important topics, so i would have liked for him to focus just on those in lectures. i heard other students saying the same thing.
he was so mean to me. i just didnt like him. he is not clear and expects you to know most of the stuff.
Dr. Omar really cares about the students. Sometimes he is a little hard to understand (at 8 in the morning) but he will help you with anything you ask. He really knows the subject well.
Easy quizzes and hard tests. Wouldn't take again.
Sometimes he is hard to understand through his accent. Although, he is very thorough instructor and knows his stuff! His jokes are really corny. Don't take him unless you have taken 30A or AP chemistry from someone else.
there is alot to learn in a short time in this class, but i thought dr omar did a good job of covering it. he is very helpful during office hrs, and works very hard (he makes a companion notes packet for each chapter). DONT fall behind!
hard to follow (hectic lectures with too much material crammed in), not helpful, and many feel he is purposely trying to confuse/trick/weed out students. quizzes are easy, tests are hard, and no way of knowing what to expect on them. Homework and labs grueling - at least 12 hours/week, not including regular study time. would not recommend!!
Prof Omar is not a great teacher. He grades unfairly and expects everyone to understand him through his thick accent.
When I was in his class, I cursed him for assigning such a huge amount of homework, and for having a somewhat cold demeanor. But in retrospect, I appreciate his throughness, and he was very helpful when I came during office hours. During class he can be cranky and sometimes rude; approx 1/2 of the class dropped by the end.
Dr. Omar is a very knowlegable person, but lectures are very random, and don't seem to cover half of the material that we are supposed know. It seems as if we are teaching ourselves most of the concepts in this very difficult class. The people that can follow are either fresh out of highschool chem, or taking the class for the 2nd time.
a tough ass, but i learned quite a lot and enjoyed the class overall.
After taking his class, you will have learned something. He is fair and extremely helpful.
Siraj has got major attitude problems that make learning torturous. Nice in front of class, but at office hrs he treats you like a moron (guys only). I spent on avg 16-20 hrs per week studying from the book, reading his lectures, and barely missed a B. I thought he'd give it to me after he saw how hard I worked, but you'll get no mercy from him.
he is very knowledgeable, but lacks any communication skills. He is hard to understand, he has been rude to me when i asked for help, and he doesnt cover most of the material. i had to study really hard and even drop out of another class, but he still gave me a B. it seems he has pre-concieved notions about students. BAD. dont ever take him
Dr. Omar is a great teacher. He is always there for his students, and will take as much time as needed to help. His accent is a little daunting at first, but you get used to it. Tests are really well-rounded and you have to work for the A, but it is definitely worth it because you learn a lot.
I read these reviews prior to taking the class and dint have high hopes. But i find he is pretty helpful, even cracks the occasional joke. He can come off as condescending but he is not really a jerk, just expressive. Bottom line - chem requires a lot of effort. You MUST study before class. Really, you need to be motivated. I enjoyed this class.
Really wants you to learn. Fast paced but reasonable. Excellent if you want to learn chemistry. Can show humor as well.
Unfriendly, very difficult to understand. When asked questions he doesn't understand or can't clearly answer, he say to "ask a friend" or "just read your book!" Text is not that helpful. Have had much better chem text books!
Dr.Omar is very professional, No Chem 1A is not an easy class but, if you are willing to put in the work this class is excellent. The ONLY bad thing I could say about Dr.Omar is that he is a tad anal with grading his labs. Other than that I wish I could take Chem 1B with him! Good luck all! You cant go wrong with Dr Omar!
jeesh...
Arrogant, power tripper. Don't like this guy at all. Doesn't want to help students. Not approachable.
It's a 5 unit class so there is lots of work required from the student's part. However, Dr. Omar makes the subject harder than it actually is. Not helpful, and mumbles consistently. Not looking for someone to hold my hand, just guide me in the right direction. Of the original 110 students in auditorium class, only 22 of us survived till the end.
Dont Bother. Too much work for no reward. Many get high scores on the homework, quizzes and labs but bomb on the exams. Really not worth the amount of effort you put in.
you can tell he doesn't like helping his students by the way he answers, and in a class like chem you need all the help you can get. Take the class with a teacher who will help you succeed.
Certainly knows what he's talking about, definitely very intelligent and understands the material. However, he seems abrasive and aloof. I'm not going to call him a jerk, but I'd like to. I feel like he actively tried to purge students from the class; Fewer than a third made it to the end of the semester. Extremely unforgiving.
Dr. Siraj is a fantastic professor. He's hard but thorough, and his lectures make everything very clear. If you are willing to put in the time, I guarantee you will do well- his tests, quizzes, and labs are challenging but fair. If you do the homework and come to class, you will certainly get an A. Great Prof!
highly recommended. If uu do the work for the class u will be definetly fine.
An extremely difficult, unforgiving and narcissistic teacher who has resorted to writing flawless reviews about himself below. Difficult/impossible exams, impatient attitude during labs and although he does try to help, he has a MAJOR anger problem. If you make a slight error during the lab, he will scold you in front of class. Very inappropriate.
I have a hard time imagining that the stellar reviews below are legitimate. The students that endured his horrible teaching only did so because we formed study groups and taught ourselves OUTSIDE OF CLASS. Most people stopped going to lecture because it was useless. His exams are damn near impossible. Avoid if at all possible! Otherwise good luck!
Honestly, he's much better than his ratings suggest. Class is hard at first, but if you put in the effort it's enjoyable. He'll take you seriously if you take the class seriously. Always do the exercise sheets/practice exams and read his chapter synopses (all available on his website). A lot of goof-offs may complain about him?don't worry about it.
tough but fair instructor, learned a lot from him and his class (both on the subject and how to study well). this is the kind of instructor you want to have in order to learn how to handle these classes (e.g., hard science courses). if you can master his class (learn to study), you're set.
He is a very caring professor. The class is not that hard as long as you study. Lots of materials are covered in the class and its normal to study on your own outside of the class. No complain about that! He is a Nice Professor.
Sriraj is very helpful one on one, but very hard to understand during lecture, not so much because of his accent, but because he can whip through problems too quickly and doesn't present things clearly. His tests are usually harder than his problem sets and he does expect you to know every detail from the textbook even if barely covered in lecture.
His lectures are very hard to use on the tests. I felt like I was teaching myself everything from the book. He supplied supplemental readings that were helpful. He was also available for help after class. He tested us on information we didn't go over in class. His tests were very long. I only finished one completely.
Prof. Omar is hard to understand and whips through the material, but he definitely prepares you for the next level. You have to work hard to get a good grade, but if you do, you will not have a problem with future classes. He will give you extra time if you need it. If you put in the effort he will too.
Siraj knows his material very well. His class can be challenging but I feel much more confident about chemistry now that I have taken his classes (1A & 1B). He has many handouts and lecture notes as well as a great TA that offers tutoring on Wednesdays after lab. Be sure to make use of these resources! Will miss having him as an instructor.
Siraj may seem like a difficult prof., but if you ask him questions during his office hours he is receptive and very helpful. The hardest part about the course is keeping up with the courseload. There's a direct correlation between students' homework grades and their overall grades. A tough class but you'll be very well prepared for future classes
I learned so much in this class. though it isnt easy, if you work hard and prepare well, you will be fine.
Dr. Siraj was a great professor in Chem 1A. Very helpful, dedicated to student learning. I learned a ton. He lectures really quickly at times. The course is a ton of work. Do the reading before lectures, otherwise you may be lost. Chem 30A is an easier class--many people should be in that class instead or before taking this one.
This prof has two motives - teaching chemistry and weeding out fresh students. I'm an A student who'd already taken gen chem and still fought hard for my A in this class. If you're not a very self-confident and self-motivated student (or maybe even if you are), steer clear.
Do you want to major in chemistry? Are you looking to actually learn and know how chemistry works? Take this class, Siraj is very intelligent and passionate about the subject and offers help to anyone who is having trouble. Highly recommend taking an intro course prior to this class if your basic chemistry is rusty. It's challenging, but rewarding.
Nice Professor. Chem 1A is hard Chemistry, but the professor is nice. Always available for office hours. Very helpful in explaining one on one. You just have to ask Siraj if you don't understand anything. He will explain. Like any other class, be prepared to put in lots of hours and efforts to do well. You will learn a lot.
Class is extremely hard, make sure you study a lot! Always leave one full day to do the homework and study the materials. The professor is very nice & always available during office. May seem a little scary at first but very caring. Tests are hard, do well on them, the quiz & labs. Don't expect an easy A put time & effort to this class!
It's a college level class. Some students really like to be spoon fed by the professors. You have to do a lot of independent studies on your own. This is a hard class but if you ask for help, Siraj is always there. Good Professor. Highly recommended.
Chem 1A is an extension of Chem 30A at BCC. Take this class only if you have taken some Intro Chemistry course before. Tough subject, you need to apply yourself but the professor is always available for help in his office hours.
Very helpful once you get used to the accent (think malaysian accent.) Class average was a B. Study and you'll get an B. Work harder and you'll get an A.
Got an A, but wouldn't recommend. Merritt has a better chemistry staff, laney comes second and Berkeley third.
This class is beyond difficult. I study so much for this class and yet im npt getting the grade i deserve. Dr omars tests.are very difficult and his way of teaching doesn't make sense he is.very unfair and doesnt seem to care if a student is trying but still struggling his answerer is.."make sure you know when the last day to drop is" !!
Very organized, always on time, knows his chemistry very well, easy grader, detailed updates of grades after every midterm is a bonus, always available for questions, gives out alot of extra credit. An occasional take-home quiz. 9 quizzes, 3 midterms, 1 comprehensive final (exam reviews available). Honestly there isnt a teacher whod make it easier
Lectures are beyond confusing, he does go in depth on topics. He would go over problems in fast rate, giving little to no chance for students understand what he is reviewing. When you address a question, he would make you look dumb by either scolding you or briefly reinstate the answer and glare at you. Dont bother with him!
i took 1A & 1B with him. passed both with A's. I studied all the HW that he assigns (only). Quizzes are easy if you did the HW. Exams are challenging but you should be fine if you have done the HW. He generously hands out Extra Cedit after every exam. Expects more discipline in 1B. Read the chapter before you go to class. Chemistry isnt easy!
I don't recommend his class. The tests were super long and difficult. He tested us on the things that was outside what he had taught in the class.
I don't recommend his class at all. The tests are very long and difficult. Besides, some of the questions on his tests are outside what he had taught us in the class. I studied very hard for the tests but we're never able to to get an A on any of his exams.
Great Professor ! Those complaining about the tests being hard are the ones who don't study everyday. Getting an A in Chemistry is no joke. It needs serious handwork and disciplined efforts. If you cannot study Chemistry regularly, don't take it. Studying a day to two before the test won't help much. It's everyday progress which matters. OK.
Dr. Omar is a good professor. You have to study hard and apply yourself too. Chemistry is no joke. If you don't understand anything, just ask. He gives office hours in which he can explain more. Read the text book and do your homework. Dr. Omar is helpful.
Take this Professor only if you're planning to take his class solo with no other classes in that semester, cause he'll assume that you're doing that. And don't forget to prepare online sources for the material cause trust me that's how you'll study throughout the semester. So yeah go for it I'd say!
Siraj demands a lot and grades hard, but I learned so much. Do the exercises in his handouts, expect to spend a decent amount of time on lab reports and attend class. The textbook was good to have as a reference & clarify gray areas but grading is based mostly on lecture material. Don't spend too much time reading or on homework. Practice problems.
General Chemistry will be a hard course with any teacher but Siraj makes sure that he makes himself available to help his student if you want to pass the class with an A go to office hours, do the problem sets in class, take notes and do the homework this is a class that requires work and dedication.
He's always helping students on textbook HW and handed-out worksheets during office and tutoring hours. It's basically doing pages and pages of worksheet problems as practice for his tests. He's busy, so he might be curt, but he will explain step by step solving method.
Horrible professor. He quickly goes over the material expecting you to understand it right away and then moves right onto the new material. When you ask him to clarify something he either yells at you, "Don't memorize, learn" or just shouts at you in a very belittling way. If you come to him with questions he treats you like you are an idiot.
Dr. Omar has good intentions and tries to teach the class, but his poor comprehension of questions can make the subject and requirements very confusing. His lectures aren't very organized, but he won't test as broadly as his lectures cover. The quizzes are helpful for predicting how much you are expected to know - asking him won't help much.
Chemistry is pretty tough subject. You need to apply yourself a lot. Chem 1A is a 5 unit course. Make sure your schedule is not overloaded with other heavy coursework. This class is not an easy class. Siraj is always there to help in office hours. You just need to ask for help. He is a fair grader.
As a fearful first time chemistry student, I couldnt have asked for a more welcoming, organized and knowledgeable professor. This class is HARD and requires allot of work, time and effort. Dr. Siraj loves what he does and goes above and beyond to help his students, even out of his office hours. He is the true definition of "teacher".
I'm honestly confused that the overall rating isn't much higher. I don't understand. Omar is an incredible professor. He offers so many resources for you to do well and makes himself available to help. For those who don't do well, they're clearly not putting in the necessary time and work. Chemistry is not easy but Omar makes it doable.
Lectures aren't always super helpful (heavy accent and fast pace) but still go to each class! Do all of your reading prior and go to any review sessions he hosts. Wiling to help but do not fall behind! Lab reports are difficult but ask for help. Siraj seems scary but he is actually pretty nice as long as you're not always fooling around in class.
Don't know why his rating is high but he has a very bad accent and his lectures are not really clear. The tests were hard and he grades really tough.
Super nice guy. Lectures are pretty boring but I'm not really that into chemistry. He is a very knowledgeable professor and tests on things he goes over in class. If you work hard you should pass.
He gives you tons of assignments including weekly quizzes, lab assignments, and homeworks. If you don't qualify the grading criteria of the assignments, he takes off your points tremendously. He has a really bad accent so that it is hard for me to underststand the lectures. Would not recommend him at all.
Unless you have a strong background in Chemistry, DO NOT take this professor. He is a great guy, but a less than adequate professor. He has an unintelligible accent, is unwilling to work with you to better your grade, and enjoys giving low grades.
He sets you up for success, very helping and thorough lectures. lots of work required but easy A if you keep up with the hw, tests and labs
Professor Omar is a very smart person, yet lacks the skills to effectively teach the material. His lectures are dense and don't make sense if you don't have a good foundation in Chemistry. While he's open to questions, his answers are often vague and only partially connect back to the question. Be ready for long lectures and LOTS of work.
Professor Omar knows his stuff, but is unable to accurately teach all the content efficiently. Some units are well done, but for others you'll definitely have to teach yourself. Be prepared to put in work! There is required homework and weekly quizzes. Would recommend only if you already have a decent understanding of chemistry.
Most unorganized teacher I have ever had and worst science teacher I have ever had. Does not explain concepts well and when you ask him a question he answers with something that never makes sense. He enjoys giving bad grades. Lectures are not organized at all. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
If you have some background in chemistry, Siraj can be great. I would not reccomend jumping into Chem 1A without having done Chem 30A, though - the material is organized around the textbook, rather than anything sensible, so you're likely to be lost. If you put in the work, he's a fair grader and provides ways to improve, but it's not easy.
He is a very tough grader. Tests are very hard too. You need to study very very hard if you want to get that A. Good thing about him is he is available outside of the class and willing to teach you but it's still tough to get an A on his class.
This class is accepted across almost all of CA University's. If you are not dedicated, you will not pass. That is the point. This is the first and only Chemistry Class I have ever needed. I spent on average 5 hours a day for 4 months in toutoring, class, or working on Homework. I walked away with a B, and a stronger work ethic. Good Luck.
Chem 1A is difficult, be prepared to put in a lot of work. He gives a lot of extra credit and is always accessible outside of class to help you. GO TO FREE GROUP TUTORING, THIS IS THE BEST WAY TO GET AN A. He is a really nice and caring professor. Start of the semester was rough, but I put in a LOT of work, did all extra credit, and went to tutoring
I knew in the first week of class to drop this guy. He does have a very thick accent and also tends to throw in nonsense words in every sentence, making it very difficult to follow. He also seems to expect that we all took him for chem 1A and all left off at the same place, just jumping back in. And he can't seem to comprehensively cover anything.
It is a tough class but he gives you the resources in order to succeed. There is plenty of extra credit available. You have to be ontop with assignments and make sure to give it your all. You will succeed if you put in the effort :) He is a great teacher and I highly recommend his class. The class was challenging but it made me a better student
I took Siraj's courses for both Chem 1A and Chem 1B. The format is similar in both classes: expect to have Sapling HW due every 2 weeks, weekly quizzes, and monthly tests. The workload doesn't seem excessive as long as you make sure to study the chapters weekly as assigned. The professor provides PPTs, review guide, and practice quizzes! Helpful.
Chemistry is difficult so you have to be ready to put in the work for this subject. Siraj gives plenty of material, resources and office hrs! Homework is online and there are (optional) packets for every chapter, practice quizzes and practice exams. You are really set up to learn all the material but you need to put in the time, lots of time!
Very good prof, his class is clear.
I took his class for five weeks, then dropped and took another professor. It was a good decision to drop, I got an A and a good grasp of the material. He's nice and he's trying but his class is a muddled mess. He would get frustrated when we would take notes instead of paying attention to him. "Look at the lecture slides later! I'll post them!"
Graded on 3 midterms, 1 final, weekly quizzes (he uploads practice quiz), and weekly online hw. It's the mindset that matters because he's really caring and wants to help you. I can see that he seems unapproachable, but once you do, he will hold on to you and answer your questions. he may seem nitpicky w grading but overall grade you will be fine.
chem 1b content is hard but Siraj puts up practice exams and quizzes so it will be doable if you work for it. I noticed some people dropping towards to end of class bc they are scared by their quiz grades, etc. but if you hold on, ask him for help, keep doing assigments, and study for your quizzes/exams, you will be fine. He's a nice guy.
His class was challenging but Siraj is more than willing to help. He is invested in his students and makes himself available to them. He is very organized and has a clear grading system.
Siraj is a nice guy, always accessible. His class is not "easy." You have weekly lab reports, quizzes, online homework, and 3 midterms and a final. You have to get into a routine of these weekly work to do or else you will think there is so much every week. But if you do them, you will pass, make sure you ask him q's about the exam. Loved him.
Omar is a solid choice to take Chem1A/B with. He's been teaching at BCC for awhile. 3 midterms, final, weekly lab report/quiz/sapling hw due. it's not little but once you get used to it, gets easier. he always makes himself available outside of class &if u utilize those times, he will give you extra help & hints on the exam. he's a fair grader too!
tell you the truth I had a hard time with Doctor Omar. It is not from the lectures he gives but his accent is hard to understand. And ones you get used to it the semester will be over. But he is really a wonderful teacher with heavy worded tests, he knows the subject but you need to do double the effort. if you can handle his accent he is great!
Do not take his class, take chem1b at other Peralta colleges, tough grader
Doctor Omar is hard to explain his lectures are so boring and his tests are confusing and unclear. His language is awful and will make you hate Chemistry. I had chemistry experience and I believe I got a B because of it and a lecture that I found very late. If I have known the channel I would get A. if I can choose again I would take him.
Dr. Omar's class was a very fun and exciting class. He is to the point and very direct in what he teaches. The homework acts as a study guide for midterms and it can save you if you get lower than B's on exams. He answers questions really well and he gives partial credit on his online exams which can help boost you to a decent grade.
I took Dr Siraj for Chem1A and I'm now taking his Chem1B class. He's really nice, his lectures are organized and it's clear what he expects. There's average amount of homework, his quizzes are easy, exams are hard, but he gives extra points if you got a problem semi-right. He's very patient and always answers questions in a helpful way.
Dr. Siraj was my favorite teacher and he made learning chemistry fun and easy. Chemistry is a really hard subject in general, but he takes time in lectures to answer and make sure everyone is caught up. He will answer any question you have the best he can. He gives extra credit. All he asks for is to attend lectures and do work. 10/10.
I really liked Siraj, but other students in my class complained. He's very organized and his syllabus has all of the important dates as well as a clear grading system. Plus, I found him genuinely funny and enjoyable. It is a hard class but he's a fair grader if you aren't prepared to work for your grade then just don't take chemistry at all.
Dr. Siraj is a very smart guy. He is a pretty lenient grader, however his exams and quizzes are difficult. Studying days in advance was the only way for me to get good grades. His homework is tedious but does help with studying. This class is hard, but Dr. Siraj will work with you and I recommend taking him for CHEM 1B.
Siraj is a good person but I think he believes that we will all just get it. Many people in my class would show up to lectures and then mute and read the textbook all of the class, it was more helpful to learn out of the book than listen to his 3-hour lectures. Quiz/Test are hard. Get one question wrong and your grade will drop a whole letter grade
Dr. Siraj is a very understanding professor. He is very communicable is loves to talk. He has a thick Indian accent that may be hard to understand. His lectures are very important and he gives quizzes almost every week. His Lab Reports are intense, but he is a lenient grader.
Siraj makes his Chem class unnecessarily difficult. He mainly lectures on theory and grades on problem solving which doesn't allow for any meaningful prep in class. He is a tough grader, makes mistakes on answer keys and problems, employs trick questions and uses poor wording when writing problems. You can easily fail by missing 1 q on a quiz.
I dropped the class in the first week. Lecturing was done without checking for class comprehension, so most learning happens outside of the 3-hour long sessions. Because students weren't checked in with, classmates were often lost and uncooperative. The materials were full of trick questions, dropping grades despite understanding the concepts.
Siraj is a knowledgable professor, but it's clear that his curriculum is flawed in the remote learning environment. Aside from the language barrier, he constantly makes errors on his quiz answer keys. Questions in zoom leave you more confused. Textbook is mandatory to understand the material, do all the EC possible. hardest class I've taken tbh
He can be difficult to understand, but watching youtube videos on the material and doing the homework was all I needed to pass the multiple-choice exams. He gave partial credit back on test corrections, and labs were fairly straightforward. While I wouldn't say he is the most amazing prof, his class was very doable and he made chemistry doable.
Pros: You can tell Professor Siraj is a good professor with good intentions. Test corrections helps a lot. Cons: He's not tech-savvy, so it's hard for him to teach in the way he really wants to. His quizzes/test has mistakes so don't be afraid to challenge his answers. He has an indian/singaporean accent so its hard to understand him sometimes.
Disorganized. Struggles to give clear instructions, and then grades based on what he intended to convey, rather than what he actually said. Poor lecturer, heavy on problem sets, but often makes mistakes setting up problems. This is particularly egregious on homework sets, where it is often necessary to go back and forth with him multiple times.
Truly one of the worst experiences I've ever had with a teacher. If you take this class, be prepared to get a private tutor and spend your semester teaching yourself everything you were supposed to learn in class on Youtube.
If you want to teach yourself the whole semester, take this class. You can't understand him most of the time, he gets frustrated when he teaches you something or tries to explain something to you. He just goes through slides for his lectures and doesn't prepare you for what will be on the exams or quizzes. 3 midterms, 8 quizzes,1 final.
This guy only reads off slides, and has a difficult accent to understand. He rushes examples and makes the simplest work impossible to understand. You need to watch YouTube get 3rd party tutoring and rely on classmates and even then it's impossible. If you have anything like work, or get sick your screwed he will not give you an inch. AVOID.
Tough class, but using Unstuck ai and the free textbook helped me stay on top of it. Definitely need to attend lectures and study hard, but can get a good grade if you put in the work.
