Very strict about homework and an extremely difficult grader. Unreasonably high expectations. C in his class = A in other math classes. Take him only if you love mathematics.
Only real complaint about him is the final exam - which is ridiculously hard. The truth is he is an amazing teacher, but he expects you to revolve your entire life around his class. I just wanna pass, not be a mathematician. Too much work for just one class.
Well prepared, caring, knowledgeable. LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of work however.
It's been pretty good so far. Extremely strict attendance policy - will drop you if you miss more than two classes.
Hardest teacher I have ever had. I had to drop three other classes in order to do the work for his class. Mr. V is a very dedicated teacher. I like his class.
The homework assignments take up a lot of my time. I had to quit my job in order to finish the homework. (I need stats to graduate and graduating was more important to me than my job.) If you don't like doing homework, don't sign up for his class. None of his exams are curved since most of the students who sign up for his class really love math.
Tests are extremely difficult - most of the problems are the "out of the box" problems that you will never see in any textbook. He knows his stuff - which is both a good and a bad thing. It's good cuz you get really clear explanations from him. It's bad cuz he can easily tell when you pretend that you understand something that you really don't.
Excellent, fair teacher. Really difficult class - 25 hrs of work each week . Toughest final ever.
Great teacher. Lots of homework.
Great guy, hard teacher. So many math nerds sign up for his class it's not even funny. These kids ruin the curve for the exams. I can't compete with them. Wouldn't have taken his class had I known that he was popular with math nerds.
He's friendly with the student, his homework is not hard at all if you take the time to read through the materials while doing it. But he gives out a lot of it after each class. He has group work to get a lot of extra credits too. Overall, I'd recommend this class if you've already had the foundation of math, otherwise, it could be a struggle
Exams are too challenging, homework assignments are way too long. I don't think that Mr. V realizes that we have a life outside of his class. )
Three words: Hardest teacher ever. If your gpa doesn't matter to you, I would definitely take his class. Otherwise, AVOID.
Tests are nothing like what is discussed in class or the homework. I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I am extremely stressed and anxious since I don't know what's on the test. On the other hand, his tough exams force me to try to understand the material and not just memorize. Lectures aren't stellar, but he'll get better with time.
Teaches well. Would take again.
Excellent teacher!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
His class is great. He gives a lot of extra credit! He is easy to understand, and he is good at explaining things if you have any questions. The tests are very similar to the homework. The homework is tough, in order to succeed in the class you must dedicate a substantial amount of time on it, your grade will reflect the amount of time you spend.
Well-prepared for every class and very knowledgeable. Definitely recommended.
SO MUCH HOMEWORK!!!!!!! I am really mad about the fact that I spent over ten hours on every homework assignment and I never won best homework. I could have used the 30 EC points. The class and teacher are great, it's just a lot of work.
Ended up with 657940 (69.9%) and he still didn't pass me. (658 points (70%) was needed for a C.) Chill class, but he's too strict when it comes to the borders. All that work and I am still going to have to repeat the class.
Hard class
As a person, Mr. V is a great guy. As a teacher, he is demanding - he expects us to do every single hwk problem on every single assignment. Otherwise, you have absolutely no chance of passing the class. Pretty much every single one of my classmates was willing to do every single problem so there was no curve. Love how he returns exams quickly.
Take this class if you can. This guy really loves statistics and he will do everything he can to help you pass.
Great class! I am glad I took calculus with him!
No notes, hints, reviews, or study guides for any of the exams or quizzes. Quiz every day (so four quizzes a week) and homework collected every single class.
Taken his Math 71 and 72. If you plan to take his course and PASS, be advise. Quizzes at the beginning of virtually every classes. Need to be on time to take it. Homework assigned each class. KEY IS TO DO HW. Quizzes' questions are previous HW Q's and about 80% of the exams. Exams are cumulative. He's helpful and gives out extra credit. Good luck!
Mr. V is a fun teacher. He loves his work and it shows. As long as your willing to do the homework and participate in class you''ll most likely breeze through his class.
Take stats with Mr. V!
With his help and 10 hours a day of doing problems, I was finally able to pass statistics!
Writes amazing letters of recommendation. Thanks Mr. V.
Great Teacher for math 72
Favorite math professor ever!
Straightforward class: do the homework and it's an easy A. The catch is you have to do the homework, which takes thirty hours a week to finish.
Mr. V is cool.
Even though I got an F, I am so thankful that I took his class. I learned more in his class than in any of my previous math classes. I am not an immature kid anymore and I now realize that it is better to fail and learn a lot rather than get an A and learn nothing. Knowledge is power!
Mr. V is the best math teacher and the 2nd best overall teacher I have ever had! Really cares about his students.
He teaches well, but you need to spend a lot of time outside of class studying. The only students who passed were the ones who didn't have a job or internship. I talked to some of them & I found that they spent 40 hrs each week studying for his CALCULUS class!!! Because of my demanding job, I could only spend 35 hours a week studying & I got an F.
I enjoyed his stats class until I saw my final grade - I received a D after getting 699 out of 1000 points. He refused to give me the extra point that I needed to pass. I thought he was a nice guy, but I guess I was wrong. I now see why his full name is SITHparran (think Star Wars). UGHHHHHHHH
Just completed Math 63 with him. Learned a lot. He's not as hard as everyone says he is. I simply kept up with the homework (easier said than done) and got a B.
He has a very theoretical teaching style, which is great if you want to learn or understand the material. I don't want to learn or understand the material - I just want to get a good grade! This is community college, not Stanford or Berkeley (the two colleges that Mr. V attended).
I really like having Mr. V as a teacher. He now offers no extra credit whatsoever - this is great as it forces me to actually do the homework and study it carefully so I can do well on the quizzes. Can't afford to lose many points on the homework or the quizzes cuz the exams are real tough. Would take again.
Mr. V is such a great teacher! His print out notes make it so much easier to follow along & not get too distracted. He really wants his students to do well and takes his time to meet with students outside of class to answer any questions or go over past exams! The homework is nothing too extreme. I highly recommend you take him for stats!
Very caring and understandable. By the way, make sure you do your homework on time as he gives quizzes based off the homework every day. Do your HW (quizzes and most of exam based on HW), make sure you understand the material, use the resources he provides you (the videos helped), and you'll pass.
He's great if you don't have a full-time job. He's not great if you do have a full-time job. Simple as that.
The best Math teacher at EVC period. Just do your Homework(understand the material) and you will get an A in his class. Exams are based off homework.
Mr. V goes above and beyond to help each and every one of his students. He inspires me to do my best. I wish that Mr. V was my teacher for all of my math classes.
He's way too nice a guy. A kid in my class made very rude and obnoxious comments while he was teaching and he never got mad at him. He just smiled and kept teaching.
Mr. V has the biggest heart. I am in his algebra class right now and definitely plan on taking statistics with him in the spring. Comes before class even starts to answer hwk questions. What a guy!
Great teacher! Keep up the good work Mr. V!
He is very nice. I would recommend him.
On the first day of class he looks really really mean but he's actually the chillest teacher and I plan on taking him for as long as i can. His tests are based on homework problems so you literally just have to study and do the homework. Gives great feedback and tries to help a lot.
He is a great teacher for statistics.
Extremely strict professor.
A great instructor who does everything he can to get students involved in the class and in the college. He responds quickly via Piazza (sp?) and is very flexible to meet with students. For the most part if you do the homework and practice the other questions in the textbook you will be good.
Mr. V is a solid teacher and his class was very enjoyable. Clear in his grading criteria. You work in groups everyday. Quiz almost everyday at the very beginning of class. Do NOT be late and miss these. There are NO makeup quizzes and they make up a huge portion of your grade so don't be late to class! He's funny but can be moody sometimes lol.
Mr. V is a fantastic instructor. Don't expect to learn material though in one night. Only take his class if you have the proper time to dedicate and are truly committed. Taking this class during intercession was a challenge but it was doable. Don't be afraid to ask questions and ask for help. Lastly, doing the hw does help you learn the material!
Too meticulous in his grading, takes off points for the smallest of the mistakes. Wish that he was an easier grader. Having said that, his lectures are amazing.
Do the homework and study the homework, everything is based on homework in this class it's not even an exaggeration. Amazing teacher and just a really nice guy overall. Looks mean on the first day but he's really nice.
I am so glad I took statistics with Mr. V. He is an expert at probability and is willing to explain a concept in many different ways until you understand it.
Approachable and professional! Professor V.'s teaching style is very "straight-to-the-point." He gives points for all homework assignments including quizzes, so do not fall behind. The homework is EXTREMELY helpful for all the quizzes, lectures and exams. Best Stats teacher ever! If you have the chance, make Professor V your first choice!
Mr.V is a great instructor. Although, this class was easy but the class environment was enthusiastic. Mr.V patiently answers if you have any doubts. He is so nice and kind. He is a man with positiveness in his personality. Homework is mandatory if you want to earn full credit and exam is so easy (all from class and homework assignments).
Mr. V stats god. Knows the material inside out.
Mr. V os the best math professor at EVC. He goes an extra mile teaching Calculus. He's a nice guy who's willing to help you. Don't be afraid. You must do the homework because all the questions will be on the test. If you put enough time and effort , you will get an A. Top notch professor for Calculus.
Tougher than I expected. Strict grader. Difficult exams.
Took Mr. V for Math 71 as well and the structure was the same. He's a good guy and you'll warm up to him after a while. Do ALL the homework and do well on the pop quizzes, if you know the homework then you will do fine on the tests.
Sooooooooooooooo patient. Love him.
This is my second time taking statistics and I am absolutely understanding everything this time around. He knows statistics and probability well.
Excellent
He goes at an extremely fast pace. You should not take his class if you prefer an instructor who goes at a slower pace. He also does not give study guides or allow notes for the exams. Knows the subject matter well.
No extra credit whatsoever and extremely challenging exams
I wouldnt take his class again. He is a nice person in general and does advocate for people to ask questions but he does not explain very well nor does he take the time to fully explain how he did he problems . Too fast paced and gives a lot of homework. I would not recommend
He cares very deeply about student learning, but he doesn't care AT ALL about student success. Take him if learning is your first priority. Don't take him if your grade is your first priority.
Don't like math don't take him. Like math take him. I don't like math so he wasn't the right teacher for me. He's a good teacher though, cares that his students are learning.
He is a really good calculus teacher. He lectures at the speed of light so I certainly wouldn't recommend him for courses like Math 13, Math 111, Math 311, and Math 310.
Out of nowhere, he went from being a cool teacher to the strictest teacher ever: no cheat sheets or notes for exams, no exam reviews, no study guides, no extra credit, no late homework accepted, no partial credit given for the exams, no group quizzes, no curve for hard exams, no calculators for quizzes and exams, no slowing down of lectures.
EASY A!! Strongly recommend him for STATS. Do the homework and you'll pass all his tests. The lectures weren't too heavy and he made everything easy to understand. He drops your lowest test grade. Just a great teacher overall
He loves math, but I don't think he has the personality to teach developmental math classes. I don't know who forced him to teach developmental math classes, but he should only be teaching statistics, calculus, multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations classes.
Took Mr. V for Math 013 and Math 72 (three semesters apart). He seemed happy teaching Math 072 and seemed miserable teaching Math 013. For his sake, I hope that he never teaches Math 013 again. He clearly doesn't want to teach Math 013.
Mixed feelings: incredible teacher, tough grader. As long as at least one person receives a perfect score on an exam, he won't curve the exam at all. 1 perfect score and 40 F's no curve. Wish my grade was better, but I can honestly say I have learned a lot in his class.
I took this class over summer. It was definitely a LOT of homework and studying (at least 4hrs each day for me). Prof. V knows his material really well and is clear in his teaching. I liked how he went over lots of examples for each topic. I felt prepared for quizzes and tests, as long as I spent time to understand the homework.
Best Professor for Calc 2, clear lectures, straightforward, no surprises during the exam, this class helps for future math courses in the series 73, & 78
Great teacher, prepares you for future classes, has a very direct and easy approach to teaching, and has multiple days where you can talk to him on your free time for clarification. If you understand the material you are rewarded, as simple as that.
Mr. V seems very serious at first, but he's pretty friendly. He curves/grades his tests in a positively strange way. He prints out his lecture notes so you just copy what he writes on the board. His hw ranges from 6 to 15 problems with many parts to it (1a, 1b...1e). Quiz on previous lecture/hw every time you meet. Quizzes/tests are hw problems.
He's great as a lecturer and a teacher. I'm actually surprised I am doing good in the course because I thought it would be all textbook but his lectures are actually useful for quizzes and exams and they are all related.
Not that hard as expected. Sometimes he assigns a bit too much homework, but his homework is useful as it is related to test. I would ask he have less homework and focus on important parts instead of repetitive but he's nice that he prints out his lecture notes. Ask for him to curve and behave and he will curve up
Mr. V is the best choice for Math 72!
An incredible educator! Take him!
He goes through lecture really fast and doesn't explain his steps. Expects us to do everything on our own. There are no cheat sheets and calculators on quizzes and exams. Homework is due every class. Attendance matters, if you miss class more than two times he may drop you out of the class.
Great teaching style, loved his class.
He is the best option if math is your favorite subject and if you are naturally good at math. Otherwise, I would take statistics with a different instructor.
Goes through lectures very quickly, homework is due every day, there's a quiz every day at the start of class. Expects students to know how to work the problem and does not allow calculators. Seems to get bothered when the class misses something from Calc 1. You have to spend hours and hours studying for his class to get the grade you want.
Probably the best math teacher I have ever had.
Mr. V is definitely on of the best math teachers Ive ever had. Yes, he assigns a lot of homework. Yes, he can be monotonous during lectures. But he is also very clear and has helpful lectures. He genuinely cares about your grade and curves like crazy on his tests (which, btw, are all questions from hw or lecture). Do the hw, and youll be fine.
Good professor. quizzes and homework are due every other day. He goes fast through lectures. If you keep up with homework will help you pass. Thanks to him I found Calculus 2 easier than Calculus 1. Highly recommend this professor if you put effort to the class.
Mr. V is the hardest Math 73 instructor at EVC! Definitely don't take him unless you received an A in Math 72 or a 5 on the AP Calculus BC test.
I wanted to drop the class in the beginning of the semester because of how fast his lectures were. But Im glad I stuck with it because after some time the class got a lot easier. Teaching style will take time to adjust to, but is VERY effective. Do the homework and attend his lectures. Barely passed Calculus 1, but did so well in his class.
I like Mr. V's teaching style. He may not be your cup of tea. You have to at least have an adequate understanding of math if you are planning to take him. He knows his stuff. If math is not your strong suit, I would advise you to not take him. He might be too fast phased if you're not naturally talented at math.
I actually liked his class. He didn't allow an index card or give a review for the final exam because four students were goofing off after the third exam. Plus, the questions on the final were extremely difficult. My grade dropped from 99.6% to 90.5% due to the final. Still got an A though.
Mr. V is extremely smart and very willing to answer questions. The videos on his website for each lesson were very helpful. He's pretty chill and an avid fan of bay area sports. Because the Summer term is very short, there was an insane amount of HW every day. Our quizzes (often group) and exams were all HW problems, so that was fair & easy.
He definitely knows his probability and teaches it well. There were no troublemakers in my class so he allowed us an index card for the exams.
Tbh- Im currently taking his class and honestly He just goes so fast throughout the lecture doesnt explain his steps- the hw does not rlly corresponds to the lecture. Im not one to complain about a teacher on her but I just think u guys needed a heads up- I say be really open minded the weeks before dropping w/o a W-
Complicated questions from this textbook? NO. You can try many people you think they can help you, but a question from an unknown outside source that is not found in this textbook? Ask yourself: Is it worth talking to your teacher about not figuring out for yourself and others or stick with it and end up with what you want.
Creates his own questions for the homework so you can't use online solutions to complete the homework. Does not allow index card/notes or give a study guide for the exam + the exam questions are unbelievably hard. Only enroll in his class if you LOVE math. LOVE, not like.
Quiz on previous lesson EVERY class. Whats taught in class is sometimes different from the hw. Doesnt use canvas, gives a grade sheet until the end of the semester BUT does give graded work back every class so you can just estimate what your grade is. His textbook is barely used/rarely helps. If youre good at math, youll make it.
He doesn't allow index cards/formula sheets and doesn't allow test corrections for any of the exams. If you struggle with remembering formulas and would like to have test corrections, take the class with a different teacher. He teaches well, it's just that he is really strict.
Took this calc 2 and calc 3 w/ him. There is a lot of homework in this class. The tests and quizzes come from the homework and textbook/lecture examples. His lectures are straightforward and he'll help you if you have any questions. Practice and understand the homework + you'll be fine. Calculators are often not allowed on exams also.
Extremely unpredictable. Had him for Math 72 and Math 73. If the class is honest (no students copy homework solutions), he makes the exams easy. If the class is dishonest (some students copy homework solutions), he makes the exams difficult. Cross your fingers that they are no cheaters in your class.
High on mathematical knowledge and teaching ability, low on compassion. Some of us are working two jobs and have kids to take care of, yet he doesn't care. "20 hours of calculus a week" seems to be his favorite phrase.
Average score on Exam 3 75/100. ONE student then complained about the difficulty of the class --> Average score on Final 26/100. The final was not curved and there were no test corrections. I had a B before the final and a D after the final. Because of that student, I had to retake stats.
Average score on Exam 3 - 75/100. ONE of my classmates then complained about the difficulty of the class -----> Average score on Final - 26/100. The final was not curved and there were no test corrections. I had a B before the final and a D after the final. Because of my self-centered classmate, I had to retake stats.
Pro tip: ACE THE HOMEWORK. The exams are impossible thus you really need all the points you can get in order to pass. No extra credit whatsoever thus perfect homework assignments are the only way to boost your grade. The math nerds in my class loved him and he only listened to feedback from them.
I'll be honest, if you want to truly understand calculus, this professor is best. If you want to just familiar with the concepts and is aiming for an A, this professor is really worst for that. No extra credit, No exam corrections, and is really hard on grading everything. Its not worth taking this class for C. Take a different corse or professor.
Prof Vanniasegaram is a really good but really hard professor. Taking his MATH 073 class with him this summer was quite honestly super stressful, but he gives good feedback and even helps students understand the difficult problems in greater depth. Exams are a good portion of the class grade, but if you do the homework and study, the exams are easy
I appreciated his class more than the mathematics classes I took in high school. The classroom environment was fantastic because none of my classmates were needy. College math is better than high school math!
I took this professor during the pandemic time. Live zoom meeting was optional so there was a lot of HW to do and you lecture yourself by either watching his videos or other youtube videos. He great very fairly and you may feel free to ask any questions. Do your HW well and you'll find the exam very doable! Would recommend this professor.
Had him for Math 63 and Math 72. Take him for Math 72, avoid him for Math 63. Trust me. Reasonable calculus teacher, unreasonable statistiscs teacher.
I took this online, and it felt like he wasn't even my teacher. I learned everything from this girl on YouTube. All he did was assign a useless sheet of info each chapter (don't try to learn from it, you'll get confused), textbook problem numbers, and the tests. His class times were just for us to ask him and each other for help but not mandatory.
Solid Explanations, Solid Choice for Math 73.
Mr. V is amazing in his lectures. His teaching pace is more advanced. For someone who are not good in math, I advice not to take his class. Whenever you have problems with your math, he will very kindly guide you until you understand the problems. The exam problems are very reasonable and suitable with his teaching. A+ for this professor
Organized, clear expectations. I finished every homework problem on time and every Class Exercise just like he told us to do and I got an 'A'. The major downside is he does not allow late homework or give up make-up quizzes or exams, even if you and your entire family are on respirators in the hospital because of covid.
Great teacher, so glad I took his class. Really knowledgeable about math and really cares about his students. Well-structured class.
he made math easy to understand
Made Multivariable Cal feel like a natural extension from High School Calculus BC. He makes concepts clear and makes himself available if anyone needs help. Homework takes forever to finish but its the only way to learn and its important for the quizzes.
Professor V was a skeptical choice at first since I was trying to adapt back to in-person schooling, but after a while, I realized that he was an awesome professor. He cares about the class, is there when you need help, and his exams, he'll go over the materials specifically for the exam. Do be aware that you need to do your homework like usual.
I don't care that he teaches well (probably the best I ever had), I just want to get a good grade. No study guides or index cards/notes for exams. And the exam questions are extremely hard. Enough said. Not taking any more classes from him.
TAKE. HIS. CLASS. Believe me, you won't be disappointed. He's the best thing that happened to me in the time that I took his class. Totally recommend, do not think twice, just TAKE THE CLASS. He's an engaging, understanding, and taxing teacher- all at the same time. You'll find you remember every single part of his curriculum with no issues later.
Mr. V inspired me in the same way that Mr. V inspired Ruby in the great film CODA. Ruby gained admission into Berklee but I hope to attend its homonym (Berkeley) one day. Berkeley is where Mr. V went to college.
I think Professor V was an okay professor. But what I noticed in the entire class is that other students were not getting the help necessary to succeed. You should ask questions when possible, but he always seems to rush for time (MW 6-8:30pm lecture). So your best bet to survive is the online videos he links and a study group. Good luck. -A
Tough grader!!!!!!!!!!
Avoid him unless you're amazing at math. He's not for everyone. Many students pass, but many students also drop or fail. Great math students = pass, Bad math students = drop or fail.
All I have to say is he is the hardest. He explains concepts extremely well but the homework has no connection with what is covered in class. Take him for stats only if you have already passed calculus with an A. If you didn't pass calculus with an A, take another professor instead.
You have NO CLUE what will appear on the exams, you have to memorize every single formula/integral. The exam questions are all "curve balls". Who on earth passes these impossible exams? It's the jobless mathematics majors who have the time, energy, mathematical foundation, and parental support to complete all the hwk assignments without any "help".
The grading is soooooooo harsh. For example: if you forget a minus sign on a ten-point exam question, you get a total of two points! With such little partial credit offered, you have to know everything COLD before the exam. I passed only because I quit my job and ignored my friends/family and all my other classes. Hardest class in the universe!
Two words: inflexible, unreasonable. Won't accommodate emergencies (even if your entire house is on fire) and his homework takes AT LEAST five hours each day to finish (not an exaggeration my friends). No extra credit and no study guides/review sheets/index cards/notes/test corrections/curves for ANY of the exams. Other than that, he's pretty good.
Professor treats the class if it was a high school class. Homework is demanded to be written on paper to be turned in as soon as you walk in the class. Gives out long homework.Has a monotone voice that is not engaging especially if lectures are 4 hours long. Lectures were unnecessary long for something that could be explained in a span of 5 minutes
Great class so far. All the quiz questions are from the homework.
This class was one billion times harder than Math 71. No calculators were allowed for the quizzes/exams. The quizzes were all individual (no group quizzes). As long as you do ALL of the homework problems honestly, you will be fine. I cheated on some of the homework problems and got an F. Spent three hours a day on the class, should have spent five.
Honestly, I think prof V is a solid choice for Calculus. His expectations are crystal clear, and he really makes you work for your grade. His lectures are some of the best at EVC, but you have to do lots of self studying to be able to keep up with his pace (especially if you're considering taking his summer class). Quizzes are from HW. Solid 5/5.
Sure I passed with a C but I completely sacrificed my mental health in the process. Professor V is a great guy but his stats course felt more like an upper division honors course at MIT than an introductory course at a community college. He's utterly incapable of dumbing it down for us newbies. Too challenging. Too time consuming. Try someone else.
Took 3 classes w him and can't stress how good he is! Super caring even though he's intimidating at first. The lectures are short&sweet (M-Th), hw due dates keep me on track, and quizzes/exams are from hw/class/online q's. Although he is very strict about exams (no calculators or extra credit) I learned so much. It is SO hard but well worth it.
Explains concepts remarkably well, the final exam is nightmarish. There were trick questions on the final that took over 20 minutes. Final exam questions were nothing like hwk or classwork. Answers on final were complicated. Much of class time was spent working on classwork. Highly recommend Quizlet+ to supplement Professor V's awesome teaching.
Great at lectures but the homework takes hours. Be prepared to commit a lot of time
Difficult quiz every class = constant stress for those who suck at math. He thinks that people who do well on homework and do poorly on the quizzes are cheating on the hwk. He's a great professor only if you love math and are great at it. Otherwise, you will hate the class with a passion. Fortunately for me, I love math and loved Mr. V's class. =)
He was good and actually helps us a lot through our journey in his class.
I agree with the reviewer below that he was good BUT his teaching style is only suited for mathematical geniuses like him. I mean he expects you to be able to multiply 391 times 409 in less than two seconds WITHOUT A CALCULATOR. Professor V. is an amazing human being, but he's a stringent math professor. Unless you enjoy failing stats, AVOID him!!!
The lectures were dry, yet the course was super organized. His grading scale is definitely NOT student-friendly: 97% is needed for an A, 94% is needed for a B, and 91% is needed for a C. I have never heard of anything like this. (For most professors, 70% is good enough for a C.) On top of that, the questions on the final were all TRICK questions.
Definitely one of the best math professors. I have taken him for 2 semesters so far and plan on doing so again. He teaches the content very well, and is a fair grader. Yes, the class can be hard, there is a good amount of homework and lots of quizzes. With that being said I cannot emphasize this enough how good he was at actually teaching.
THIS PROFESSOR IS AMAZING. Just do the homework and you'll do good in this class. I have learned the most from the class then I ever have from any of my other classes. This class sets you up for success in the future and how to succeed in future classes.
He is an amazing professor that really teaches you the subject. His quizzes and test are old homework and online problems. If you want to succeed in his class, just study beforehand and everything will make sense.
Mr. V is an amazing teacher. While lectures are dry at times, that's not really his fault (math is boring at times). He's very accessible during his office hours, and he's VERY fast at grading exams (I don't know how he does it). He gives quizzes each class, but they are just homework problems. The exams are straight forward too.
No index cards/hints/reviews/curves for exams. There was only one A and two B's in my MATH 073 class (Fall 2023) since there were a couple of idiots in my class who kept pestering him for extra credit. Those two idiots weren't in my MATH 072 class (Spring 2023), where there were eight A's and six B's. He's a solid teacher, just don't irritate him!
Grades on an incredibly strict point system. [639/800 = C, no exceptions even if you BEG him to give you a B.] Pro tip: build up your grade at the start of the semester when the material is not too difficult. Chapters 15 & 16 are tough, your grade will drop with those two chapters. If your goal is an A, make sure you have a "high" A before Ch. 15.
Great professor, but his exams are insanely hard and make up a majority of your grade. You can know everything about the topic but still do awful on the exams because you are punished for making small mistakes. Succeeding in this class is less about knowing math as it is about being a good test taker. Happy with his teaching, unhappy with my grade.
He expects you to have a strong math foundation. Perfect algebra, perfect calculus 1 skills. If you don't have any of these mastered, you will struggle. His tests are absolutely brutal and he gives no pity points. Good luck passing the class. I got an A in Calculus I but still managed to drop out of his class due to his extremely difficult exams.
This was the first Math that I did not get a A but I still loved Prof V's class. He is the most organized math professor that I have ever had. He really cares about each student & do his best to teach. I wish I could have him for 79, cause he made me love math even more. The only problem with his class is his exams that are hard and Time consuming.
Hardest professor I have had for math. He gives really hard exams, & expects you to know all your stuff from past math classes. He is great at teaching advanced topics, but makes basic math extremely tough for non-math majors. Like every stereotypical math prof, acts as if math is the only thing that exists in the world. No extra credit is offered.
Mr.V is pretty straight forward regarding the expectations he has for his students, but he's a very good teacher. Just communicate with him and do you're homework and you're golden.
Based on his website, I was intimidated, but he is much friendlier in person. In class he will go through some example problems with the class, then you'll work on more problems with a partner. There is homework (~2 hrs) due every single session, but it is worth doing as the problems on quizzes and exams usually come from HW.
Here's what makes his class so hard: there are NO study guides or reviews given before the exams. The class before each exam, I was taught new difficult stuff that would appear on the exam. For the final, I ended up spending 10 times as much time studying topics that were NOT on the test than topics that WERE on the test. Difficulty: 100 out of 5.
I took his class based on a friend's recommendation. I later learned that the class is totally designed in such a way that students who dislike math WILL FAIL. I am one of those math dis-likers. Thus I failed the class. My friend (the one who recommended the course) later came clean & tearfully confessed that she loved math. My friend betrayed me.
Professor V is tough! I took MATH 72 & 73 (A- & A) with him, and the classes were hard. ~2-3 hours of HW due twice a week - don't fall behind on it, especially because quiz & exam Qs are directly from HW. Index cards for exams depend on class participation (my 73 class got it, 72 didn't). He's kind & funny - get to know him personally and it helps!
His class was so difficult that I built my entire life around his class, kinda like lindsey in the FM song landslide. Make sure you have a huge buffer going into the final exam. The final was harder than a steel wall in Antarctica. With the final, my grade went from a high C to a low F. The final brought me down. Oh mirror in the sky, what is math?
Exams are tough, but hey calc is tough. Weird how one of my lazy classmates thought that the 1st three exams were unfair. The questions on those three exams were just solving problems. On the final, there were MANY derivations/proofs of formulas. ALL of the problems on the final were NEVER covered in class. Went from 97% to 71%. Thank God I passed!
Challenging but rewarding class. Prof V's teaching style takes some adjustment, but the lectures are engaging if you stay engaged. Use unstuckstudy, the textbook, and office hours to succeed.
It's only been ten weeks, yet I can honestly say that Professor V is the best math teacher I have ever had. I am so honored to be his student. He is well prepared for each class and knows the material well. Super organized course. Amazing explanations. Would recommend him to anyone and everyone. Will also take differential equations with him.
Very hard class but he is very nice. If you attend classes and complete the homework, the quizzes and tests are a walk in the park.
Takes his job way too seriously. I needed an 175/250 on the final to pass the class and got a 174. He totally refused to pass me. His response: "You should have studied harder." I freakin' studied five hours each day for that class!! While Professor V is a good person and means well, he is completely unreasonable when it comes to his expectations.
Took Math 73 with him in Fall 24. There was no review for the final so I had no idea what the questions would be. For my bad luck, I studied hard for areas that were not on the final & studied very little for areas that were on it. My final exam score was 36/250. My exam score would have been at least 184 had the final covered the topics I studied.
I had Prof. V for 3 classes (Math 63, 73, 70) and I swear there are two different people inside of him. The Math 63/73 Mr. V was merciless/unforgiving and only gave passing grades to the select few [loved math, studied 5 hrs/day, answered his questions in class]. The Math 70 Prof. V was kind, fair, gave reasonable exams, & seemed happy teaching us.
A very challenging and fast-paced class, very helpful for further math studies.
I took Math 78 with him in Spring 2024 and got a D. As a result, my admission to UCLA was rescinded. Professor V. will not at all touch his grading scale or final grades to help you even if you face rescindment. I was just three points away from a C: my final point total was 557 (out of 800). What did me in was the enormously difficult final exam.
He was such a good professor for Math072. Very thorough lectures, lots of resources, and super helpful when you need help! I loved his class.
Amazing professor and experience overall. My ONLY two points of contention were that the class routinely ran over time by 20-25 minutes and the final exam was agonizingly painful (dropped my grade by like 17%). There were super difficult proofs and tricky problems on the final. Definitely harder than Exam 3. Other than that, the class was perfect.
Had him for both 71 and 72, and he was such a great teacher. If your class keeps up attendance till the end, he lets you have a notecard for the exams. If you struggle with math then the class can be difficult, but do keep in mind that calc 2 is supposed to be a higher level math class. Very nice guy tho, he bought my class food :)
STRICT ON BORDERLINE GRADES, NO EXCEPTIONS. Seems like a dove, yet he's a hawk (an EVC hawk). He's a lot like Prince's mother, he's never satisfied. Expects perfect work shown on the final exam problems. To pass his class, you must be a mighty duck. The ducks defeated the hawks in the city where Prince was born. You will probably cry a few times.
Completed his Spring 2025 Math 73 class. No index card or topics sheet for the final and the hardest questions on earth. The median score for the final was 62/250. If only all of us had done every hwk problem honestly, came to class on time on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and worked with our partners during class.... I went from a high A to a C. So sad.
This was without question the most challenging course I have taken. The grading for all class work was egregiously hard.  The exams were terrifying. It was so full of trick questions and it really felt like they were designed to fail us. I'm good at math & even I thought the class was tough. Only recommend if you are willing to do mathematics 24/7.
He was a nice guy but very serious if you have trouble with math and are not a math related major DONT take this class theres quizzes every week and LOTS of homework everyday.
He's one of those crazy Math geniuses.  That's exactly the problem; he is a genius, meaning he doesn't think like a normal math student. Knows the material very well, but teaches VERY fast.  I had a 3.98 gpa before his class and I barely passed with a C. Only reason I passed was I spent thirty hours a week studying for the class. Way too difficult.
Terrific Professor: demonstrates knowledge and expertise in his subject; would take again.
Professor V is a very nice person, but watch out for his exams you will be shocked. If you complete and understand all the homework and class exercises, you will probably get an exam score that rounds to an A+. 100% recommend taking the course with him. He knows his stuff, and you can learn a lot if you try.
Great professor. The notes he provided were very helpful and made understanding the material much easier. Always happy to answer questions. The lecture pacing was a bit fast so I did have to go and reread the textbook and watch YouTube videos to keep up. However, the HW is hard and worth a lot of your grade.
Clear explanations & lecture planning 10/10
Very dedicated and helpful!
He cares about your mathematics learning, but does NOT care about you as a person. When I informed him that I broke a nail while trying to evaluate a triple integral, he expressed zero concern about the nail and the hazardous impact to my self-confidence. He was more concerned about whether I completed the triple integral problem. I did by the way.
The median score on the final was 44/250. There was a super quiet U.S.A. Math Olympiad qualifier in my class who received a perfect score (250/250) on the final. Professor V has this disgusting rule that if there is a perfect score on an exam, he won't curve it. Thus, the final was not curved and my dreams of going to Princeton died in the process.
What everyone says about his final (it's hard) is true, and says about his grading speed (it's fast) is false. After completing the final, I was on pins & needles for 19 days until I saw my exam score and my final course grade, which was a D+. Due to my score of 52/250 on the final, my admission to UCSD was rescinded. It was very traumatic for me.
Math is my favorite subject! Math is amazing! Math is so fire! Who doesn't like math!?! When I get up in the morning, the first thing I wanna do is math! Three cheers for math! I love AMATYC! [sarcasm, sarcasm, sarcasm, sarcasm, sarcasm, sarcasm, sarcasm]. Dude, that final was acc f-ing hard! [not sarcasm]. Wtf, my A- became a D. =( [not sarcasm]
I took Math 78, perhaps it was blinded by hubris or folly I disregarded all the previous reviews here. I had an A right up to the final, the final was diabolical, Professor V let us stay 3 hours! to finish the exam. I still couldn't finish, he had very hard proof questions. I don't think MIT will accept me after this. Great lectures I love amatyc.
Great professor, but the first midterm was the ultimate weeding-out exam. No topic sheet, cheat sheet, and a lot of sections covered in the midterm. If you can get past the first midterm class gets 10 times easier.
VERY challenging quiz at the start of each class. BUT, if everyone comes on time, he makes the quiz a partner quiz. 22 out of 23 students on time = individual quiz. Reached the parking lot at 1:59 pm and made a dead sprint to the math building to ensure that my classmates and I got a partner quiz. Epic. Oh yeah, the final sucks. Majorly. So tough.
I took his Differential Equations class. Info: Questions from daily quizzes are pulled from Homework, do your homework throughly, it's how you learn!! For midterms, questions are often similar or exact to the notes, homework, Pauls Online Math Notes, etc. Go to office hours, Professor V is very funny, kind, teaches well. I really liked his class.
