This class is one of the hardest classes I've taken. Her tests are super difficult and the class average for each test was around 60. I recommend reading the textbook and doing the practice problems because the lecture notes are not enough to prepare for tests.
Maric is the absolute WORST. With the transition to online classes with COVID19, her true colors have really shown through. She is not giving partial credit on quizzers OR the final, and is refusing to look at anyone's graded work for mistakes. She is making the class unnecessarily hard for everyone. She clearly doesn't know what she's doing!
so this class was in person until the pandemic... they managed to make the labs, quizzes and final online. I think making us take the tests was unfair, considering it was over bb and we didn't get partial credit. I understand that the system is new to us all, but there must have been some alternative method they could have used to test us or smth.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. And I have taken orgo lab before. I found it really unfair that the final exam still covered material from after spring break, despite NONE of us learning it properly due to the transition to online. The quizzes are hard. The final is hard. Everyone scored poorly.
3 Midterms, 1 final replacing the lowest exam scores. Dr Maric always makes herself available for students out side of class and she gave a lot of extra credit. Would definitely take her again !
Prof Maric explains the materials slow and well. Her exam reflects the stuff we learned in class and the HW. She also talked about topics that exam would cover during lab on Fri. I got an A in Phys 2, but mind you, I got a C in Phys 1. When the classes moved online due to covid-19, she made herself available to her students, just email/text/call!
This lab is ridiculous. The hardest lab i have taken. The quizzes and final are so difficult and worse than lecture exams. To do well practice the practice problems and study the manual and the information given at the beginning of the videos posted. Also, hope you have a caring TA like i did or this class is very tough.
Since moving online due to COVID, she has doubled the length of each quiz and made them twice as hard, without changing the time limit accordingly. Her grammar is terrible so half the questions can't even be understood. There are also many mistakes in the data she sends us, and won't bother to correct it unless directly asked
The lab for General Physics was harder than the lecture. It won't matter how well you do in lab reports or prelabs, the 5 quizzes determine your grade. The quizzes are long and we don't have enough time to complete them, plus studying labs doesn't help because of how she phrases her questions. Good luck. This is the worst lab, worse than OCHEM lab.
Just go onto cougargrades, and you will see that Prof. Maric has decided to curve DOWN since the start of quarantine. I got a 95% raw score, which she said was an A-. An A started at a 97, so don't expect one unless you're perfect. Also bad at replying to emails and frequently sends incorrect data.
Everything you see here is pretty accurate but you have to take it anyways because there's no other option so I'm here to say that my TA for this course, Osakpolor Eki Obakpolor, was the best TA I have ever had in my undergrad career. I would highly highly recommend him if you have the option. Extremely helpful and kind. He made lab bearable.
Professor Maric is by far the harshest professor I've experienced at UH. She does not care about her students during this pandemic. Expects you to have good internet connection, no flexibility, and is rude when her students face different settings since learning remotely. Quizzes and tests lockdown. TA's try their best though.
Doesn't respond to emails. Waits till the last minute to upload the data for lab. When asked for additional practice problems, her response was "read the textbook". Lectures entirely too fast, impossible to keep up. Required students to pay for a subscription to a website that is faulty and she doesn't even use. Worst course I've ever taken.
Doesn't respond to emails. Poor at communication. Not understanding of the students, speaks condescendingly when they bring up concerns. Forced us to buy a subscription only to use it for extra credit. Of all the professors who've made a poor transition to the online format, she's up there. There's a reason why UH's physics dep. is notoriously bad.
I had Dr Maric for physics lab 1101 and it was a nightmare. She is awful and is not helpful at all. Especially during this pandemic, there are so many losses people are going and she does not care, and she is not willing to work with you. She makes the material extremely difficult to understand. Its because of her Im dropping the class.
Honestly, this lab was probably one of the worst ones I've taken at UH. Professor Maric has no regard for ANYONE or ANYTHING. Does not reply to emails ever, is extremely harsh on grading, absolutely no leeway even during a pandemic. I would rate her a 0 if I could, she's that bad. The quizzes are very difficult and they're the majority of the grade
Super un caring. Does not respond to emails AT ALL. Many of my friends also tried to contact her via email and she did not respond to them either. If you contact her on microsoft teams w an issue, she will be of no help. Unfortunately shes the only option for physics lab, but if you ever get the opportunity to take someone else, pls do.
basically what everyone said below. She provided her number but is moody and heartless when she picks up the phone. Treats us as if we are all trying to be engineers . hoe Im just trying to pass. Averages on tests were in 40-50s and she thought those were good. she should quit her job. I usually like my professors but she needs to go
Professor Maric is such a nice person and I really respect her, however, I found it really difficult this semester. Her lectures were pretty confusing and while she was responsive to questions it often made me more confused. I think she would be much better in person than online.
Professor Maric is probably one of the worst professors I have had in college, and I am a Junior. Her lectures are hard to follow and she is not very good at teaching and making the material understandable to all her students. This is the first class that I am probably going to fail, I do not recommend her at all!
This was the worse class I have ever taken. Her quizzes and finals for the lab are absolutely absurd. They do not test your knowledge and they are literally designed and created for the purpose to fail you. She takes forever to respoind. She does curve, but you could get lucky. Some ppl could get a nice curve, while others don't get any. Terrible.
I'm a 4th year STEM major, and this is by far the worst class I've taken by far. This prof shouldnt have received credibility to teach at a univ. She makes so many mistakes during lecture, almost as if shes learning it simultaneously with us. If you have any other option, please consider it. Had it not been for the curve, I would have done terrible
Take this class at community, these labs are designed for students to fail with the purpose of filtering out "undesirable" students.
This professor does not care about her students at all!! For physics lab 1 she decided to give a bunch of people zeros on a quiz for not showing their hands on camera, after showing your environment etc. Since we lost a week we only had 4 quizzes instead of 5 which is 20 percent of our grade. So that zero was a big hit to so many students
Don't take this professor, you're better off taking this lab at community college. She gave everyone who didn't follow the correct "protocols" a zero on a lab quiz. Mind you, this class is 1 credit. Didn't matter if you followed the honor code you were still left with a 0. The lab is already difficult. It isn't worth it.
The one time I ever interacted with this professor was through email and even then she managed to give me a backhanded comment for a simple question, which prompted me to keep my distance. Quizzes and the final are really heavy despite being a "lab". The TA's are kind and understanding but not as helpful as I wish they could've been.
Her online lab has been the hardest lab Ive taken at UH. I had her class as well but had to drop it due to the lack of actual teaching. She read from powerpoints. Her labs are extremely difficult for a one credit class. The quizzes given arent related to the labs at all. Would not recommend.
If you hate physics, take this class and you will hate it more. If you love physics, take this class to realize you are wrong.
absolutely terrible professor and I would give a 0 if I could. Goes back and changes quiz grades if you upset her and gives you a 0 if you dont show your whole body on camera. Beyond terrible especially during a year when classes are online and she should reconsider her job. Takes a whole month to reply to emails, save yourself & take someone else
she gives you a zero if she cant see your hips on camera during quizzes, she should honestly use common sense, which you think would be implied since she is a physics professor. I would rather unalive myself then finish her class
Like the others have said, if there was an option for a 0, I would choose it. The lab for this class is unnecessarily more difficult than it needs to be. The testing rules for LDB were so strict, you have to show your whole upper body on the camera. Hated this class, I'm glad it's over, you're better off taking physics at a community college.
Like everyone has said, if I could give her a 0 rating, I would. This is by far the WORST professor I have taken EVER. The class is very difficult. She takes weeks to respond to emails and when she does respond, she is super rude. Her testing requirements are too much, she requires you to show your whole upper body and if you don't, you'll get a 0.
I have a 3 words about maric.... WORST. PROFESSOR. EVER. It's sad that we can't avoid her because she is the only option for physics lab at UH. If you can, take at a community college.....
First time I'm reviewing a professor because of how awful this professor was. Has NO sympathy for students at all, especially during COVID. This class is literally designed to weed out students. The quizzes/final which make up 50%+ of your grade has no correlation to what you learned in class. This professor makes this feel like a 4+ credit class.
Extremely test heavy, and the TA's grading is harsh.
Never again. Lab reports every week, grading depends on your TA. You can get all As on the reports but the lab quizzes she makes can singlehandedly fail you, plus the final which is formatted just like the quizzes. Unclear questions, has an attitude when emailed, quizzes are hard even studied for.
Dr. Maric is almost impossible to reach. She says to reach her via Teams but does not respond. The quizzes are exceptionally hard and have little relevance to the actual labs. Her final exam reviews were very disorganized and were a mix of the lab and lecture which is not helpful if you're only taking one. Quizzes count for a large portion.
What a ridiculous class. Her lecture before each class is a YouTube video from years ago and doesnt help you at all with the lab. Be prepared for some ridiculous quizzes and final. Majority of the answers for the quizzes werent even listed! Her review for the final was lackluster and didnt help much. Too bad this is the only professor.
This is by far the worst lab class ever. While the labs themselves are not all that difficult, the quizzes and final are unbelievably hard. They dont correlate to the labs at all and most people end up failing because of that. Stay away if you can.
Got all A's on lab assignments, but currently failing the class because she decided to enter zeros for quiz and final.
I usually do not rate professors because some reviews can be misguiding. However, Dr. Maric is by far the worst professor I have had. She has trust issues with her students, for that reason she should not be a teacher. I sincerely hope she changes her style of grading and handing out zeros for future students.
I came into this class hoping Prof Maric would not be as bad as the reviews said. Sadly, I was very wrong. Quizzes and Final does not reflect what is learned in lab, and are ridiculously difficult. Grading is unclear, she changed quiz grades without explanation. Prof is difficult to contact and rarely replies. Stay away from this course if you can.
I heard and saw the reviews of this class and I thought oh how bad can it be? YEAH, IT'S BAD. The lab reports honestly depend on which TA you would get and luckily my TA was pretty nice. However, she made the final so fricking hard the average was a 40. She is also so bad at replying to emails. I want to give her a zero just like how she did to us
She is nearly impossible to reach and seems to show no regard for her students. I emailed her because I was sick and rather than helping get through the course, she just suggested I take it in a different semester. Her average for her quizzes is less than a 50 each time. Something is not right.
I made an account just to leave this review. Worst professor I have EVER had. She has no regard for her students. No compassion, no understanding just cold. The quizzes always average at 50 and the final is impossible. If you care about your GPA DO NOT TAKE HER. I promise taking her course will only leave you frustrated, stressed and angry.
Worst professor I have ever had. If you can, take physics at the community college, you at least might learn something.
Having a good TA is the key here. The course is violently difficult. The quizzes are nearly impossible for any student taking any other courses. No formula sheets on quizzes. Memorize everything you can and how to apply it. The lab manuals required but the info in it isnt enough. Outside help will be needed.
hardest class at UH and its just a lab! harder than orgo and thermodynamics combine. why? because the quizzes are very hard to do well in and they are hard to study for. The Final as well was very difficult. I ended with a horrible grade but still managed to get a B. Idk how the class was brutal but the curve went crazy. good luck folks...
I hoped that I would get into an accident every time I had to drive to this class. Absolutely hated it. I am usually a straight-A student but no matter how much I studied for this class, I did badly in quizzes. NO CURVE. Doesn't respond to emails. TAs all grade differently. Final is awful. Just drop out at this point. She has no sympathy. Just bad.
A nightmare. I would study for the quizzes and just end up guessing. The prelab and experiments are fairly easy. The quizzes will tank your grade, and youd prob end up guessing on the final. Dont even bother emailing her because youd prob end up worse, shes passive aggressive. I hope she finds peace in her life, because she makes ours difficult
This physics lab was the worst class i have ever taken at UH. My TA took points off for the tiniest things. I did well on the experiments and failed just about every quiz. I don't think they care if you actually learned the material as the quizzes intentionally try to trick you. I didn't think this class was going to be as bad as people said it was
Pre-Labs and Experiments were relatively easy although small mistakes can result in large deductions. The Quizzes and Final Exams are generally not reflective of the content or experiments and the quiz average was generally around 30-40%. Class experience is also heavily dependent on a good TA since they can help immensely during the experiments
Horrible. She is the worst professor in the entire history. She has designed this course so the students will fail no matter what we do. The quizzes and final have nothing to do with the lab that we do. The TA doesn't even know what is going on. Take at a community college if you can
Physics lab is one of the most time consuming classes i have ever taken at UH. 5 quizzes, 1 final. The quizzes and final are structured in a way where the answer to the second question relies on the answer to the first, so each question is unsolvable unless you get the first one correct. If you get the first question wrong, you pretty much failed.
actual labs=easy. quizzes= Qs not over the lab, and asking u to derive equations the quizzes were very hard, with very low averages. what is the point of making them so difficult. the phys1302 tests were much easier than this lab. the final ave was a 42%. Why havent they changed this format? why is the school ok with this?
Just don't take physics labs at UH with Dr. Maric. The quizzes and final are over questions that have nothing to do with the actual experiments. Averages on quizzes and finals are consistently below 50% but as long as you score around the average you're guaranteed a B. Please save yourself the headache, take this class elsewhere.
UH HAS TO do something about the physics labs and science department in general. I have no idea how you are supposed to prepare for these quizzes. The fact that most people bomb them should be indication enough that there needs to be a fundamental and structural change in these classes. Label all ur units and focus on doing well on the lab reports
This is quite possibly the worst class I have ever taken in my entire life. The quizzes she makes are borderline impossible and have nothing to do with the actual labs. The tutorial videos are old and unhelpful. She made us switch lab partners every week, which somehow made the class more stressful. Take this class at community college instead.
Dr. Maric is rude and a terrible professor, I hate her. I emailed her several times with no response and when I went in person to discuss a lab with her, she rolled her eyes at me and said "it doesn't matter". All of the TA's that teach the class are terrible too. The quizzes are unrelated to experiments and have average grades of less than 50%.
The labs themselves are alright, but everything else sucks. Quiz averages are very low, and it's difficult to prepare ahead of time. The way she writes instructions/emails comes off as condescending. Funny that her quizzes state to "assume there are no typos" when the workbook and slides are full of them.
Her ratings are taking a dip due to labs that are run by the Ta's. As far as physics 2 lectures go, my grades started skyrocketing when I did her practice tests. I kept having to ask my friends in her class to give me her practice exams because I took another professor and I really regret that.
an absolute nightmare of a lab. the prelabs/labs are fine, quizzes are hard but manageable. final was an absolute monster. i would never take these physics labs at UH again. the most annoying thing is that even if u study, your chances of doing well are low unless u have mastered the content. averages are so low idk how UH is ok w it. good luck!
This lab was horrible. Class average for the final exam was a 30.... And there is no forgiveness if you miss something, even if you are sick. Got a 0 on a lab because I got covid and it lowered my grade 10 points!!! The professor has no empathy. Emailed back and forth fighting her for weeks because she is just SO rude and condescending.
Terrible lab proctor. TA's are fine but the quizzes and final are extremely difficulty. Don't understand how she is still employed by the amount of students who fail lab. DO NOT take lab here at UH, take elsewhere.
Policies that she set seemed like they were made to prevent us from doing well. Quiz questions built off each other and would try to trick you with none of the above answers on 1st few questions so if you weren't 100% sure with yourself and chose a different answer you would get the rest of the questions wrong even if you used the correct technique
The worst class I have ever taken. I took PHYS 1 lab somewhere else and was the most exciting class of all my classes. Lab is where you can actually experience physics. But this class made me hate physics this class is designed to just fail the students. Quizzes and exams are painfully hard. TAKE THE CLASS WITH SOMEONE ELSE.
UH needs to do better when hiring professors, absolutely terrible for lecture and lab
physics labs are horrible here at uh, please take it somewhere else. I stress more about the labs than the lecture itself
Maric is one of the nicest and most caring professors at UH, people should be nicer to her. She also gives a huge curve at the end of the semester and tons of extra credit opportunities. TAKE HER.
It is a difficult class but the grading is reasonable and the colossal curve at the end of term really helps, I had a 67 at the end of the semester and finished with a B
Just see what everyone else says. Its all true. I really don't understand how this prof is still working at UH considering how abysmal the averages are. I really hope the school does something about her but i doubt it. I truly hope I never have to interact with this woman ever again. Literally the worst class i've ever taken at any school.
Professors like this should not be allowed to teach.
I've taken labs for both physics I and II and the TAs have both been wonderful! However Dr. Maric is so snobby, arrogant, and uncaring. I've been taking labs with her for two years now and she doesn't give a crap about what you are going through. All that matters to her are her insanely hard quizzes/tests. Her videos don't really help for tests.
Horrible. She is the worst professor ever. The quizzes and final are insanely difficult for no reason, and there is no way to prepare for them. They have nothing to do with the actual experiments. The TA doesn't even know what's going on half the time. Take at a community college if you can.
Honestly the worst professor I've ever taken. The labs are set up in a confusing way. The TAs are the only thing keeping this class afloat. Obvious that she doesn't know how/have the passion to teach. Her lectures that are online are unprofessional and lack structure. Even if you comprehend physics, this lab will still confuse you. avoid if you can
The lab material is so far removed from the lecture material I got a 100 on the lecture final and half that on the lab final. My class's average was half that. Either there is no communication between the lecturers and the lab coordinator or Maric just does not care how relevant either course is to the other.
Ok this might be an unpopular opinion, but I honestly don't think the lab is that bad. The test and quizzes suck but they're not the worst. Plus the way the grading is set up your almost guaranteed to pass if you show up. Although getting an A is pretty hard. Maybe I just had a really good TA, but the lab did help me understand the concepts better.
I had one interaction with her irl and it left me in tears because of how insanely rude and uncaring she was. I'm a pretty good student so it shocking. I took the class in the summer, had a good TA that helped out with confusing parts, and befriended ppl in the lab so we could work together. Towards the end, lots of her videos were confusing too.
quizzes make 0 sense, not related to lab and nothing to study off. never take this professor
if you can take lab elsewhere, DO IT. her quizzes/exams are hell and she makes up things and just expects students to understand and practically read her mind. newsflash sladjana: not everyone thinks like you. if you must take it...well good luck charlie
just avoid taking physics lab at UH. its a horrible class and the professor is even worse. she comes to class and berates students on how they're doing because the averages are too low. maybe try teaching us or making the quizzes/exams a bit easier? just a thought. AVOID.
horrible lab
Only gave a 3 point curve even though every test average was around a 50. If possible, dont take any physics course at UH. It is terrible.
DO ALL THE ASSIGNMENTS IN THIS CLASS! generous curve as someone who didn't do well on tests, Go to her office hours with your questions, EXAMS: go to her test reviews/review h w/extra probs/recitations, PLQ's, EXTRA CREDIT SAVES STUDENTS. Final exam grade replaces lowest exam grade
Took 180 when she put in the grades. IF YOU GET A 90, THATS A B+. 94, A-. YOU NEEDED LIKE A 97 TO GET AN A. On top of that, the test averages were like 50-60. Her cutoffs are ridiculous, and she gatekeeps them the whole semester. Take another prof if you can or hold it off entirely to avoid her.
Worst professor ever. Super inconsiderate, dont come to her if you have a grad school interview and have to miss the lab, its not even about the fact that she doesn't let you make up the lab, her attitude is the problem. It takes nothing to be kind and nice. I wonder how she would feel if her kids were treated the way she treats her students.
Ridiculous curve. An A was a 97
review is mainly based off of the lab section.Maric treats the lab sections like they are a physics bootcamp. Her emails come off cold & rude. It seems as if she has the expectation that everyone is an expert at physics. The lab quizzes are impossibly hard and now she's banned phones because she suspected people are “copying”. Give us a damn break.
Lab quizzes felt like they had nothing to do with the actual lab. The TA's are helpful to an extent. Please for the love of God, take physics elsewhere!!!!!
Needs to be fired. Rude and uncaring. The lab is set up to FAIL students. Policies are strict and unforgiving.
She rated terribly which is awful but she's a great teacher and physics is a difficult subject. In all UH physics courses, there are going to be 4 exams bc that a school thing. Weekly homework that is doable and 5% added to overall grade extra credit and in class extra credit. You need to put in the effort if you dont understand the lecture.
you think you studied enough for the quizzes? WRONG:( it's quite literally impossible to make an A in this class.
You could score above average on everything, but that lab final will tank your score at least 5 points. The questions and answers on the quizzes and finals aren't even the accurate answers on top of adding in the "none of the answers". Terrible course design and by far this course offered more stress than any other 3 credit hour course.
Grading criteria is by far the worst it could ever be. If you so much as get one sig fig off, miss the title of a graph, or so much as miss units, you can expect your grade for that lab to be at the most an 85. You could have a solid B in the class and your grade will drop to a C from the lab final alone. Take this somewhere else if you can.
If you are forced to take the lab, as many are, all you can do is pray. If you've never prayed before, start doing it because nothing else can save you. I promise you that anyone who gave this woman a good score is sick in the mind. IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE THEN USE THE BRAIN IN YOUR HEAD AND DO NOT TAKE HER!!! Lecture AND lab
I made an A in every lab assignment and had an avg quiz grade of 15/20 for all the quizzes but the final was TERRIBLE. She needs to be kicked out (I know you're reading this). There is no explanation as to how I am doing better in sophomore-level labs than this! If you hate yourself, take her as your professor.
Although Physics is a really difficult subject, Maric does her best to simplify concepts in a way that is easy to understand and she uploads powerpoints. She really cares about her students and offers various extra credit opportunities. Tests were difficult. Prepare to dedicate a lot of time to studying for this course.
This lab is exhausting. Maric has perfected a system that is designed for most students to score poorly on quizzes/final while simultaneously rewarding those who have access to material from previous semesters. The average for each quiz is usually around a 9/20 with one or two perfect scores. Thanks Maric.
Worst professor ever.NEEDS TO BE FIRED Not only is her lab designed to give you a bad grade, also she is very rude. Everyone needs to complain to the dean to get her fired. If you missed an exam, accept that zero because she will try her best that you don't make up that exam.Tell the dean about her so they can find a better replacement for her.
Designed to make it impossible to get an A. Pray that you have a nice TA that grades easy. The quizzes and final exam were created from the pits of you know where. I dreaded coming into lab each week. Thank god I never have to take a physics lab at UH ever again.
The experiments in the class itself were not hard to perform at all, but the post-lab questions and the quizzes were the worst part. Overall, if you get a good TA, watch the experiment videos beforehand, and do well on quizzes and the final exam, then you should be fine.
In this lab, the quizzes and final are everything as 5 quizzes are worth 20% and the final is worth 30%. Also, 12 labs combined are worth only 40%, with prelab at 10%. The labs are easy but time-consuming, the quizzes and final are tricky, and are made for you to get things wrong. Study 2 weeks in advance for any lab quiz.
Brutally disorganized lab. Quizzes averaged low‑60s, the final tanked everyone further, and a convoluted curve dumps most students at a flat C. Feels like busy‑work designed to waste time, not teach physics take this lab elsewhere if you can.
I am in medical school and i studied biomedical engineering. Out of all the classes i ever took her labs are the only ones where I received a C (twice). This is for anyone wondering if its you... it isnt. Maric is by far the worst professor and person I have ever met. I even Had to reschedule my surgery because it was on the day of her final...
Im not sure why not enough people have complained to the president of UH about her. If you're not religious, pick a religion now.
The following is all you should need to know about her character. Because a few students were caught cheating on exam 3 in a section of her 1301 class, for the ENTIRE CLASS (not just those caught cheating) she gave the following punishment: A one letter grade reduction in the overall course, a 0 on the exam, and a note on their academic records :)
Lab and lecture was so all over the place. I just took my final and can assure you I learned nothing in this class. We are provided little to no study material, and if we do, it's given like the day before the exam period. My friends told me to take phys at a CC and I should've listened. Preparing for exams was just a gamble on what you study
Saying the name Sladjana Maric is better when you hear the song Djadja by Aya Nakamura. How Aya says Djadja fits the rhythm of Professor Maric's name. At least this is way more catchy than her hellbent way of catching cheaters and punishing innocent students. Pray as hard as possible if you have to attend her physics labs or lectures!!!
She gave me a zero on the very first semester quiz because I failed to write the letter choice on the margins of my paper even if they were circled. Quizzes are brutal, the exam is worse. Thoughts and prayers for incoming students taking her course.
If I could invent a time machine to be born earlier solely for the purpose of becoming part of the board of individuals that hire professors at the University of Houston, I would, because who in their right mind chose this person to create both the lab and the lecture component. I do not think she knows how teaching works. Please fire her @ UH.
Labs were very disorganized and hard to follow at times. The quizzes and tests are very difficult. I had a 92 average and I still got an A-. Unfortunately, she run all the physics labs at UH, so you can't avoid her. My advice is to find someone who took the lab previously and ask them for help.
This lab was all over the place. The quizzes were rough, and the final was even worse. The practice quizzes weren't helpful at all. Don't take this lab at UH.
