terrible
Dr. Kalia will challenge you and there is a lot of work involved with the class (even more taking it in the summer). But if you study, keep up with her lectures and are motivated you can definately do well in her classes. I would recommend her!
this is how you learn real physics "the india way"
She is a very tough professor and provides a challenging class, but If you actually read the book and do the homework, you'll be suprised at what you learn.
she does not help you outside of class much, but if you go to class, read, and het help from the tutor sessions you will pass.
horrible
Terrible + Horrible = Real Indian Physics
there isnt one positive thing to say about her. you cant understand what she says, doesn't answer question clearly, tests are impossible to pass, labs are insane. overall she sucks dont ever take her
Knows her stuff, but her teaching ability is definitely the worst I've seen. I had a very hard time understanding what she was saying and the material covered was at an extremely fast pace.
She is a good dancer. It may be better if she can teach us dance than physics. I remember her India night dance.
STUPID STUDENTS GET STUPID GRADES. KALIA DOESN'T CATER TO A STUDENT WITH NO POTENTIAL. PAY ATTENTION AND STUDY; IF YOU'RE NOT INTERESTED, YOU WILL MOST LIKELY FAIL. IM NOT A GENIUS, BUT I DID FINE IN HER COURSES AND LEARNED SO MUCH IT SCARES ME. GREAT!

Time = SQRT(2pi/L), you see time depends only on length, but not on weight. It means if you wish to oscillate long time like a pendulum in your life, control your height not weight. Genius Physicist Prof Kalia. Learned a lot in her class.
Yeah, whoever said if you pay attention, you'll pass, you must be extremely smart because i've had physics (in high school) and i'm still totally lost. Her tests and homework doesn't apply to what she teaches or to the examples she uses. =(
Extremely unhelpful. Does NOT know how to teach. Does not finish examples. Does not clearly answer questions. DO NOT TAKE HER.
This is by the far the worst teacher i have ever had. she does not know how to teach. she does not finish problems on the board ever. all she does is confuse everyone. stuff on tests is very hard and sometimes hasen't even gone through any examples. Do not take her if you want to pass physics.
teacher knows her stuff but doesn't know how to teach it to anyone. The worst teacher ever. doesn't work out problems on board just confuses everyone. unhelpful to students. if you want to pass take a different teacher.
this teacher is horrible. doesn't know how to teach. doesn't answer questions. also her test are impossible to pass.
had hart time understanding what she was taking about and writing on the boad. skips many steps fpr her problems and confuses her class.

doesn't help. horrible teacher

Wow the worst prof I have ever had. She knows her stuff but does not know how to help you or even teach you for that matter.
Tests are insane.Knows her stuff. You cannot just pass this class. Must read book before lectures or you might as well not have go. Prepare for 20 hours a week to study, or you will get C or lower.
A student who recieves 90 percent on labs and 85 percent on homeworks ends up with 40 percent on test. Her tests are insane and final even worse. Avoid her if you can and her husbands tests are the same.
horrible proffesor, knows stuff..half of the class end up with F, two B- and no A..difficult part is the test...
THE MOST UNHELPFUL TEACHER EVER. OUT OF ABOUT 70 STUDENTS. TWO 'A'. EIGHTY PERCENT OF THE CLASS HAD GRADES IN 'D's. I WOULD WANT ONLY MY ENEMIES TO TAKE CLASS WITH HER... HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE TEACHER.
The material is difficult, she teaches the material in a way that feels more like a review then introducing new material to students. If you can grasp Physics concepts well, then you will do okay on her tests. The formulas are provided and you only have to understand how to use them. avoid if can
she's a sweet woman, just not a good professor
very hard to understand and isn't very helpful at all
I nearly failed, anlong with the rest of the class. She has a mega curve, so a C is about 50. The tests are so hard, she doesnt give enough equations. Plus, she reviews the material instead of teaching it. Visit the tutors and you should get about a C.
Her tests are incredibly hard with too little time. I study for 20 hours a week and still get F's. The class went from 22 students to 9. Do not take this teacher!!!!!!!
Terrible, but she's tenured so the dept can't get rid of her. Her husband Robby in the math dept is just as bad. We have the whole danm family running around.
If physics isn't hard, you've got a bad professor. Dr. Kalia is probably the hardest physics professor at SCSU, but don't let that scare you away. You will leave her class knowing more than with any any one else.
This classes so so hard, everyone was worried about their grade the whole semester. Most people i think failed!!! Hard to undersand her teaching style too.
Just had her for a lab, but she isn't much help when you don't understand. She'll tell you if you're doing it right, but if you're doing it wrong she won't explain how to do it correctly. Very frustrating.
She barely speaks English so you try so hard to deciphr what she says that you can't pay attention to the actual Physics. She just writes stuff on the board, you copy it, and you teach yourself.
Not a good teacher at all. She's hard to understand due to a lack of ability to project her voice, a lack of outgoing personality, and the fact she acts like the presence of students is an annoyance in her classroom at best. She has called several students names, like 'Moron' and soforth. I highly suggest staying away unless you're GREAT at math.
Physics 231 is an awful class...you will fail once...and if not you will get a C (55%)...unless your a genius with math...Ive never gotten less than a B in ANY class and i failed this class the first time...and comparing yoshianno to her...id take her !!! all the phys prof that teach 231 and 232 suck cuz they save the good ones for the upper phys
It's hard to understand her. She rarely replys to your emails. She is not prompt on grading homework so you know what you got wrong. Her test questions are hard to understand. And her formula sheets for tests are a joke.
This is probably the worst teacher in the world. If you have to take her..Don't you are just going to end up spending more money to take it again. She doesnt teach-so If you can learn from a book you are set. OH and dont ask any questions because you will not get an answer.
She really wasn't as bad as she is made out to be here. Her assignments/labs are easier then Harlander's and Zengqiang's, and she is friendly when you approach her. If you have difficulty with accents, you should avoid her.
She is not as bad as I was told.....So far I have good grades in all her tests....She is OK....but u gotta to study....
I REALLY do not recommend. More than 1/2 our class dropped. Average test grades are around 50% or lower. She is unapproachable and appears uncomfortable with English. She does ok to get through her lectures but if someone asks a question it throws her and she struggles.
She is hard to understand at first. Tests are hard unless you study the homework that she posts on her website and work through everything. Do the homework, NEVER EVER miss class, study HARD for the tests and the class is passable. I learned a lot from her! and who ever said physics would be easy anyway?
she is very nice an approachable but she is extremly hard the tests are very hard and she is hard to understand. the tests are extremly hard, you have to be extremly devoted to the class you atleast need two hours of studying a day to pass the class, if you are not the type of person who catches physics concepts easily i wouldnt recomend her.
took AST 107 online. Class isn't that difficult, but syllabus and directions are easy to follow.
If you can take this class with different teacher I suggest you do so.
Do not take a class with this professor. She doesn't really care about the students...gives more than half of the class F and gives single digit numbers on tests. Her tests are not that hard but she doesn't give partial credit so u always end up getting a bad grade
Very Good Teacher. Sometimes difficult but very approachable. Ask questions.
Took as an online class. You read the entire book, but most of it is interesting. Powerpoint presentations on D2L serve as lectures. You do at-home labs, but they are easy. 4 proctored exams, with the lowest score dropped. Weekly quizzes, but only 10 best count. Very little homework. Some simple Math and Physics is covered. Overall, great class.
Hard to understand and is very unapproachable. Goes through problems and doesn't clarify why steps are used. Labs are awful, she leaves and its gone 80% of the time. pretty useless,, won't care about you or your grade. Get her fired, honestly. Im sure nicer profs are out there begging to teach her class and will actually care. Take someone else.
Terrible, she just writes things on the board and does not explain what she is doing. She has units that don't match and expects you to follow when she erases what she just wrote down. Never in her office for help. Talks quiet and is difficult to understand. Avoid like the plague. No partial credit and little to no help if you are able to meet her.
I took this class and didnt understand any of what she was talking about. It was like she put it in the most confusing way. I retook this course online and did very well though. So if you're going to take it, i would recomend online.
WOW, she is a horrible teacher. She never responds to you, especially your emails so don't even try emailing her. She words things the worst way possible. d2L was not letting my upload two labs and she never responded to my emails or calls.. so I ended up failing because she did not respond back to me.
Dr. Kalia really knows her stuff, she expects u to think outside the box.u need to know how to play with the formulas before u even use them. tests are similar to homework problems, if u get time try to understand everysingle problem in the homework cuz if u don't it will hunt in the exam. labs are hard and confusing, but overall, u'll learn alot.
easy, with alot of reading. she posted powerpoints on d2l, had great syllibus to follow. 4 proctored exams, lowest gets thrown out. same as quizes...14 and 4 get thown out. exams come from quiz questions
also i would like to add is i took it online and she was horrible at responding back to emails. you are pretty much on your own (added to comment below)
Only had her for lab. Infuriating that she uses only excell for calculations. If you don't know how to use microsoft excell you're pretty much screwed. She also always seems really crabby all the time making her very unapproachable.
Extremely unhelpful and impossible to understand. Avoid at all costs. Take this class from a different professor.
Awful class. Professor never replied to even one of my numerous emails to clarify expectations, exams were close to impossible to pass and even hunting her down at her office wasn't helpful. Maybe online was the wrong route but this professor is no good and I had to withdraw to save my GPA. I was one of many to withdraw.
lots of hw and exams are really tough. there are three exams and 1 final. hw once a week. She can explain the problems in class and uderstand the material very well but exams need to be easier. Expect to do alot of studying. PHYSICS IS HARD!!!
I've attended 3 colleges over 7 years + this is the WORST professor I have ever had. She writes too fast, changes or drops notation mid equation. She writes her exams to fail you. I even went to voice my concerns with her multiple times, don't even bother she does not care about you. Take any other teacher and avoid this one at all costs!
She is nice as a person but not as a professor. She is also my advisor and NEVER responds to my emails. I've emailed her three times before I actually went to her office to speak to her personally. She only does problems as her lectures and barely talks about the concepts & is way too fast.
Most difficult online class I have ever had. Huge work load. I am very upset I am paying extra for this class. The book is expensive too. I have emailed 3 times in the past week and have not gotten a response. Tests are impossible. Awful class, AWFUL PROFESSOR! The University should fire her or atleast not allow her to teach this online course
I scored well on all labs, HM, and quizes. Average of an A....the exams are super hard! WOW, getting an A on all work, but overall grade was C- because of exams, what does that tell you?????
She was an ok professor but her grading system helped me to get a B even after getting really bad grades on the first two tests. You only need 70% to get a B-, 85% for an A- and below 45% to get an F.She gives a lot of partial credits on questions. You'll get an A if you understand how to solve all homework problems from the chapters coming on test.
Looking at the negative feedback from others, I've heard that she isn't as engaged in the lower level classes. I love Modern Phys I spend all lecture making arcane symbols with my pen while listening to her talk about the universe I feel like a wizard First exam was painful, but her grading scale is way forgiving.
Homework and tests: If she didn't lecture on it, you won't see it on an assignment or exam. Her tests are 10ish open-endcalculation questions similar to assigned homework. Her lectures are very dense, so take good notes. She is extremely helpful when you have a question, and explains things well. Listen carefully, as she has a strong accent.
She never explained or lectured about a single sentence of Physics. All you expect is her solving some numerical problems on the board. The professor is more or less like a calculator, just plug in numbers and u will get the output. Labs are horrendous as well. Please don't overestimate yourself by taking class with her
Really is a very intelligent and wonderful teacher. Her lectures may get long, but she makes up for it with how much you learn. Hard class but you learn a lot.
Assigns a lot of homework and some of it is due the day before an exam, her lectures are very dense and she isn't very good at explaining things. She teaches something one day and expects you to know how to do it by the next class period. Her tests are very difficult and she is a tough grader. She does not respond to e-mails either.
Was hoping to learn cool stuff about the universe, wound up basically with a physics class. Learned nothing about the stars or the universe. Homework is long and dry and the powerpoints are so long, that you don't even need the book. The class being online made it easier handle. But don't bother to try and contact her, she doesn't respond.
Teacher is like the caption of the ship but she is careless and lazy person, bad at explaining, don't clarify concepts, takes too long to grade homework and exams. She handed back our first lab report on the last day of lab along with many other assignments. Sometimes homework is due just one day prior to test. Don't give feed back. Don't take her.
Sneh is an easy professor once you get on her good side. Go to class, participate while there, hand in things on time, ask questions if you have them. She is a great help in her office hours if you need it. She was hard on a lot of students in the class, but only because she knew they didn't work hard. Put the work in and you will pass.
Difficult professor, but if you get through the class you'll know the content well. Takes a lot of work outside of class. Very tough on grading. Thick accent. Take at your own risk, I won't be again.
Taken as an online class, would not suggest taking it online. Very hard to contact through email or D2L, responded to very few people. Rely on syllabus for all of your answers. Teaching yourself pretty much anything, so a high level of commitment will benefit you. A LOT of work for an introductory astronomy class.
Okay teacher! Lot's of work, do not work more than 30 hours a week while taking this class. Must be prepared to take lots of time on this class.
Reading intense class. Prepare yourself to remember a lot of facts in order to pass the exams. This professor is very HANDS OFF with the online class. She does not offer any sort of feedback and will not remind you of important exams or homework due dates. Over the course of the semester she posted a total of four times on the d2l page.
This was by far the worst and hardest class that I have taken at this university. She is an ok professor. There were a lot of students who took circuits so she assumed that most people already knew the material and would sometimes not show us how to get the answer to a problem. She grades very tough. Good luck!!!!
She uses powerpoints to give the class. I don't think is a good strategy for physics. She is mean with the students because you arrived late. She doesn't care about the students. For some people the accent makes hard to understand the lecture.
I have done well in many past STEM courses but even though Kalia is a nice person, she is not a good teacher and has failed many students. Reading concepts off of power points is not how you learn. She is also hard to contact outside of class. Be prepared for very hard exams and learning on your own. I recommend Schaum's outlines books.
By far the worst "teacher" I've had. Doesn't properly structure lectures and instead uses ppts, doesn't properly explain the setup of problems or sign conventions, and refuses to actually give feedback when grading homework unless you directly ask her and even then she doesn't give a straight answer. The online homework is just as useless.
worst and most difficult teacher. Wouldn't recommend.
As a physics major with 3.5 GPA, I've enjoyed nearly every physics class I've ever taken. After my experience with Dr. Kalia, I've come to absolutely despise quantum mechanics and will go to the greatest of lengths to avoid ever having to learn about it ever again. This professor has destroyed my ability to enjoy this subject.
Starting this with I'm not talented in physics, and the complicated nature of the quantum world makes it even tougher. Dr. Kalia is a very nice person who will help you if you go to her office hours. But i don't think she is a good professor to take physics classes with. She just presents the information and has a tough time answering questions.
I took modern physics with her and it was a total challenge, she goes really fast during the lectures and gives a lot of homework, also que exams are pretty hard and she is a tough grader. Extremely challenging class
Dr. Kalia is very caring and patient, and she knows her stuff. Her accent takes a bit of getting used to, but she knows English better than most students. Typically, there are three weekly things to turn in: a lab report from the previous lab, a written assignment of 3-5 problems, and an online assignment with 15-20 problems. Fair grader.
Dr. Kalia is good at introducing the class material, but I would not rely on the class alone to really learn the material. There are 3 2hr tests and a comp. final. Tests were hard but fair. She is very willing to help, but sometimes her answers to questions aren't very good. I owe my success to the use of external resources like online videos etc.
Dr. Kalia is a very sweet lady, and knows her stuff. It is difficult to follow her lectures sometimes, but she is very lenient on the grading. I thought I was going to end up with a D in this class but I got a B.
She is a good Physics Professor. You just need to do your side of the work like reading the chapters before class and you can easily pass this class.
She didn't respond to 1 email I sent, failed to follow due dates on her syllabus, and doesn't teach the material well. I would recommend taking someone else if you can. She is a nice lady however, just not a good professor. Also, this is a hard class to just so you know.
this professor was very inconsiderate in keeping up with grading for the students sake. very thick language barrier. comes off as rude and unapproachable. she assigns tons of work and to say the least, her grading is inconsistent and tough. I recommend not taking this class with this professor.
Be prepared to be teaching yourself a lot because its very hard to understand what she is saying because she talks to quietly with a heavy accent. She also doesn't post grades online and does almost everything on paper. Do yourself a favor and do not take a class with her.
Minimal communication: quiet, poor english/accent, only announcements were test dates, one-sentence late responses to <1/4th of my emails, no exam/homework feedback, late grading. Abysmal scheduling: multiple assignments due in a day, assigned work over breaks and days after its exam was done, unannounced due date changes after repeated requests.
I took this class in Fall of 2020 during the pandemic. She was always very behind on posting the material. The exams are many times more difficult than any problem found in the textbook, and her labs are completely useless. She had no communication to the class all semester and didn't grade a single lab or hw until the end of finals week.
Really poor experience online. Instead of 4 50 minute lectures a week we maybe get 3 30 minute lectures at most, and even those are of subpar quality. Nothing is being graded and I have no feedback on anything at midterm (how do I learn if I don't know what I'm doing wrong?). Physics 2 is difficult, and she does not seem to care if you learn it.
Took a preparatory phys class hardest class I have ever taken. Never grades things test are 7 question worth 100 points. No lectures, just slide shows and has no office hours. Most frustrating class ever. DO NOT TAKE ANY THING WITH HWR.
Shes a horrible teacher she NEVER responds to emails. When you try to ask for her how she did something she looks at you and goes you tell me and never answers the question. She doesnt teach you she just writes examples on the board. Dont take her unless you absolutely half to. Youll live in the tutoring center if you do.
Does not respond to Emails. If you ask questions in class sometimes youll get figure it out for an answer. Posted office hours halfway through the semester. Doesnt give back grades unless its a test. The tests are very difficult even if you spend lots of time studying. Do not recommend.
Her lectures are never engaging and often confusing. She will answer questions if you ask but you will be so lost that you don't even know what questions to ask. Also, don't expect her to grade any homework or lab reports within a month... or even two. Additionally, she says in class that some topics won't be on the final but include them anyways.
